An Ashburton man who attacked a woman twice and was later found in possession of a mace has been sent to prison.

Shane Allen Shanahan, 31, appeared for sentencing before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Shanahan, who has been on custodial remand since April, was returned to prison to serve a 14-month sentence on charges of assaulting a woman, assault with intent to injure and possessing an offensive weapon.

In the midst of an argument Shanahan shoved his finger down his victim’s throat. She required hospital treatment for the injuries she sustained in the attack.

Police were called back to the address a couple of weeks later and a safety order was issued against Shanahan directing him to stay off the property for two days.

He returned later that day and attacked the same person involved in the earlier assault.

Swift boycotts new Apple service Pop superstar Taylor Swift says she will not allow her latest album on Apple’s new streaming service to protest its “shocking” lack of artist compensation during a free trial period. The move by Swift, one of the most outspoken critics of streaming leader Spotify, delivers an early blow to Apple’s bid to dominate the booming sector. Swift said that the tech giant, which is launching the new Apple Music on June 30, will not pay for songs streamed during a free three-month trial period for new subscribers.

No nudies The removal of a nude scene from a play performed at Silo Theatre has left the playwright peeved – but the theatre’s leaders are standing firm. Eight Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography, by young Australian playwright Declan Greene, premiered at the theatre on Friday with a change to the ending meaning the two actors – Bronwyn Bradley and Mark Wright – were not on stage naked. The play is a “cringe-comedy” about a man and a woman in their 40s and with destructive addictions who meet online in an attempt to fill a void of loneliness. In a statement handed to theatregoers, Greene said the play’s New Zealand director, Laurel Devenie, told him she would change the ending. Greene said he was disappointed by the decision.

“I would like to see my ending performed here, just as it was in Sydney and Perth. But after three days of negotiation with Silo Theatre I’m sorry to say I lost out.”

Snow hinders repair crews

Power is unlikely to be restored to all properties in the Ashburton District until the end of this week, following Thursday’s heavy snowfall.

While EA Networks lines crews worked solidly over the weekend repairing lines felled by trees and the weight of snow, early yesterday just under 100 consumers were still

without power.

Most of the outages were caused by fallen lines on private properties.

Power was still out in the Rangitata Gorge and the Upper Rakaia Gorge and while crews had been in to inspect the damage, the snow was still too thick to allow repair work to start, said EA Networks chief executive Gordon Guthrie.

“On Sunday we seemed to be

going backwards. People had hunkered down and left it until late yesterday to call us. As one job was completed, it seemed another came in, but a couple of days and we’ll have the bulk of it done.”

Lines crews worked back-toback 12-hour shifts over the weekend with more than 30 staff in the field.

Crews would be halved over the next two days as staff took

a break, he said.

The company’s undergrounding programme and the large number of poles and lines replaced following the 2006 snow storm meant the network was now quite robust and snow had far less impact on supply, Mr Guthrie said.

This snowstorm had prompted several farmers to decide to have lines into their properties undergrounded.

In terms of the Rangitata and Rakaia Gorges, however, because of the small number of consumers involved, it would not be economic to underground lines in these areas, he said.

The Rangitata Gorge had been badly hit because lines in the area were at the end of their life and were on the list for a rebuild over the next three years.

Several schools forced to remain closed

The snow that blanketed Mid Canterbury last week continues to wreak havoc, with schools across the district keeping their doors closed yesterday.

Mount Hutt College was open yesterday but Methven Primary School, Our Lady of the Snows and Lauriston School remained closed due to access and safety on the roads.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said the school would continue to update parents and students if anything was to change, but

the main issue was whether buses could run.

He said around two-thirds of the students were at school yesterday, however car parking in and around the school due to the piled up snow proved to be an issue for students who drove to school.

Mt Somers Springburn principal Brent Gray said while his school remained open yesterday, the buses were a little delayed in getting the students to school.

“All our buses did pretty much their normal routes, if there was anyone that was sort

of an issue we had prearranged for them to meet the bus or get children to school,” he said.

Tinwald School closed its doors yesterday too, not because of snow but because of issues with its power supply.

Principal Peter Livingstone said the school had to close as its main set of fuses continued to trip. “One section of the school only has one phase across to it and once we power everything up it starts tripping things,” he said.

A temporary repair was completed yesterday and Mr Livingstone was confident the

school would be open today.

“We’ve got to make it safe, we’ve got guys in here laying cable and using one of those cherry picker lifts and I can’t have kids around, it’s just not safe.”

Heating the school was also an issue.

“As a school your classrooms have to have a minimum temperature of 18 degrees,” Mr Livingstone said.

“Some of my classrooms take an hour and a half to get up to temperature so you can’t just say ‘oh power’s on, come back in’.”

The offensive weapons charge related to a mace found in Shanahan’s possession. The court was told he had taken it to an address where he understood a man was armed with a rifle on an earlier date.

A mace is essentially a club with sharpened metal barbs sticking out of it.

Most of the offending had occurred while Shanahan was still subject to sentence for a robbery.

Shanahan was also disqualified from driving for 12 months on a driving while suspended charge, an existing community work sentence was cancelled and his fines were remitted. An order was made for the destruction of the mace.

A protection order was also issued in favour of the victim of the assaults.

He will be released under special conditions to include alcohol and drug and anger management counselling.

Big drugs bust Four drug couriers posing as tourists have been caught trying to smuggle 11kg of meth into New Zealand.

Customs stopped the people, two men and two women, on arrival at Auckland International Airport on Sunday, and found a white crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine hidden in their suitcases.

The group, believed to be in their late 20s to late 30s, appeared in Manukau District Court yesterday, charged with importing and possessing methamphetamine.

They have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance in July.

Farmer’s bid to keep animals A district court judge has reserved his decision about whether a Mid Canterbury farmer can continue to keep animals.

Geoffrey Edgar Walter Deal, 62, appeared at a hearing in the Ashburton District Court on Friday.

Deal had received a sentence of community detention and community work on his second conviction for animal welfare charges when he appeared before Judge John Strettell in the Ashburton District Court in December.

At the time Judge Strettell withheld a decision over whether Deal would be allowed

to keep animals, to see what arrangements could be put in place.

On Friday, Ministry of Primary Industries prosecutor Grant Fletcher argued against allowing Deal to continue dairy farming in his own right.

Although reports undertaken by a local vet and MPI animal welfare officer Gary Dixon found dairy cattle on Deal’s farm to be in good condition, Mr Fletcher said it was “too little too late” for the ministry.

Appearing as a witness, Mr Dixon raised concerns over whether there was enough feed to get the cows through the winter without losing condi-

tion, especially in the case of an adverse weather event.

He said there was sufficient feed to maintain the stock for 128 days, before Deal “would be heading down the same track”.

Deal’s lawyer Douglas Brown said plans were in the pipeline to sell 30 hectares of the farm, which would clear the mortgage and enable Deal to re-sow pastures and upgrade the farm.

Deal planned to run 80 cows on the remaining 50ha, building numbers up to 100 as the pastures were improved.

This would give him an income of $40,000 per annum.

Mr Fletcher said, in his opin-

ion, that amount was insufficient for Deal, a single parent, to support his three children.

“It would be setting him up to fail,” Mr Fletcher said.

He was also of the opinion Deal’s age was against him.

In the witness box Deal said his income would be more than the $40,000 calculated, as the mortgage would be paid off when he subdivided the land.

He told Judge Strettell the farm had belonged to his family for more than 100 years, and it was all he knew.

Judge Strettell adjourned the hearing, saying he needed time to think before making a decision.

MP drops in to shout afternoon tea

It was biscuits galore for afternoon tea at the Mid Canterbury SPCA yesterday when Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew surprised Mid Canterbury SPCA volunteers with afternoon tea.

This was Mrs Goodhew’s first time visiting the Mid Canterbury SPCA. “As it is national volunteer week it’s n ideal chance to meet some volunteers and shout some afternoon tea,” she said.

Prior to becoming a member of Parliament, Mrs Goodhew said she had been a volunteer.

“It is fantastic for the soul I recommend finding an organisation that fits your passion, go where your passion is.”

Mid Canterbury SPCA volunteer Debra Harper said volunteering was a way for her to get into the community and make friends.

“When I first moved here I didn’t have any friends. I started over here and it feels just like home again,” she said.

The Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust was ready and waiting, but its assistance wasn’t needed in the aftermath of Thursday’s snowfall.

The trust and its team of volunteer helpers is often the frontline force that provides help to farmers during adverse weather events.

Trust member Peter Reveley said members had been in contact with farmers in outlying areas but everyone they had spoken to appeared to be coping well with the snow conditions. People were well prepared and while the snow was heavy, particularly in the Rangitata Gorge, and there would be some families without power for several days, there had been no calls for assistance, he said.

Chairman stands down EA Networks chairman John Tavendale is standing down after seven years at the head of the Ashburton co-operative company.

Mr Tavendale will be replaced

by Gary Leech who has been a director of the company for 15 years. His deputy will be Phil McKendry. In standing down, Mr Tavendale said he decided to hand over the reins of the company ahead of his pending retirement at this year’s annual meeting. Over the past seven years the company returned $30 million in deferred discounts to its customers.

Production postponed Methven Primary School teachers have decided to postpone the school’s upcoming production A Night At The Methven Museum.

The show will now stage next week instead of this week, due to the recent snow having disrupted rehearsals. The matinee will be on Tuesday at 10am, with main performances on Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm. A whole school practice will be held this Friday morning.

okay. “The main thing is no lives were lost. These things are just material.”

Next door, Mike McDonnell was luckier. The waters didn’t lap as high in his house of 50 years, but there was still plenty of damage.

He’s been flooded before – four times – but now Mr McDonnell has insurance. “After 2004 the bank made me.”

Skiers and snowboarders were ready and raring to go after fresh snow at Mt Hutt, but as many as five had to be airlifted at the weekend. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to Mt Hutt on Saturday three times. The first airlift was for a 27-year-old female with a leg injury, the second for two people, one a 22-year-old female with a head injury and a 30-year-old male suffering an anaphylactic attack. The third was for a 31-year-old male with a hand injury. The helicopter was back on Sunday, airlifting a skier after they had an accident. All airlifts were to Christchurch Hospital.

Man tasered A Greymouth man wielding a tomahawk in Greymouth had to be tasered by police on Saturday night. Senior constable Mike Tinnelly said the man was angered by the noise coming from a party at his neighbours. Mr Tinnelly said the 44-year-old, who had been drinking, headed over to his neighbour’s property and confronted them with a tomahawk.

“When police arrived the offender was belligerent and angry and waving his tomahawk around and had to be tasered.” He was taken into custody but released later in the night when he had calmed down, Mr Tinnelly said.

Peter Mac’s back behind the mic

Back where he belongs, radio announcer Pete McQuarters (Peter Mac), out of retirement an on air from 1pm to 6pm on Ashburton’s airwaves.

Peter McQuarters is living proof that you never say never.

Eighteen months ago he retired from a long career in radio, hosting shows around New Zealand and over the final years of his career, in Christchurch.

During his time as Peter Mac on the Breeze, he made 3000 round trips from Ashburton to Christchurch and reckons he spent close to $100,000 on fuel. But a man can only spend so long on the road and Peter Mac had other things on his mind – a quieter life and establishing a boutique events venue, Aeroview, with his wife Larraine.

He vowed never to return to radio, but 18 months later, he’s behind the microphone at Ashburton’s Hokonui and says it’s a bit like coming home. And he has come full circle after making his first foray in radio in Ashburton about 35 years ago before the town had a radio station, broadcasting during the Ashburton Borough centennial celebrations.

During that first year of retirement he didn’t even listen to radio, didn’t read a newspaper, didn’t listen to the news.

“I went cold turkey and I loved it.

Then I started thinking I’d like to do something local,” he said.

That turned out to be back behind the microphone at Hokonui

hosting an intensely local 1pm to 6pm weekday show. And local is where he believes radio’s future is.

“I’ve watched radio change.

There are now so many platforms you can get entertainment on and suddenly a wee niche has opened up for radio that’s local. I used to say to people that I’d like to get back to doing meaningful stuff, not stuff about the Kardashians, that mindless stuff.

“I’d rather talk about a chook show than that and community stations are where the good stuff is.”

He might have had to eat his words about never returning to radio, but Mr McQuarters is adamant he won’t be going back to breakfast radio – ever.

“My days of doing this have long gone. I’ve done that for the best part of 28 years.”

Turning up to work on Wednesday last week was a bit like starting a new job, he said.

“It’s like getting your new pants on, making sure the zip works and it’s great, I can just park down the road.”

Mr McQuarters might have thought his new slot at Hokonui was about being in the right place at the right time, but station manager Carol Johns says she’d had him in her sights for several months.

“For us it was about having someone local, someone people can relate to.”

Watching and waiting for your children in the EA Networks Centre pools is about to get a whole lot more comfortable after Ashburton District councillors signed off a $15,000 deal that will see seating built alongside the leisure and learn to swim pools..

Group service manager Neil McCann told councillors the seating was urgently needed as during busy times people had to sit on the floor while they were waiting for their children.

“We’ve received numerous complaints on the issue,” he said.

Attempts to address the problem had been made by placing white plastic chairs used in other areas of the complex alongside the pool, but this was not a good long-term option, Mr McCann said.

He recommended the council install one long, plastic seat at a cost of $15,000.

Councillor Peter Reveley asked whether one seat would be sufficient.

“I’m happy to spend a bit more money here, is there a possibility of putting in two tiered seats?” he said.

He was assured by Mr McCann that one seat would be sufficient.

Installing the new seating was just part of the fine tuning that occurred when any new complex opened, councillor Don McLeod said.

“You can’t foresee every individual expense when you set up a new building, you have to wait until people are using it.”

Cr Alasdair Urquhart said the lack of seating showed a planning failure in the building and that adding seating now was just one more cost for council.

“The building initially had no seating whatsoever. This is just another minor muck-up. It’s not a bottomless pit out there.”

The new seating will be installed in time for the July school holidays.

A programme intended to help obese and overweight children all over the South Island is set to be launched next year.

The Triple P Lifestyles intervention programme has now been approved and endorsed by the South Island child health service level alliance.

The New Zealand health survey published last year found one-third of two to 14-year-olds were either obese or overweight, and nationally the country’s obesity rate is the third highest in the OECD. According to the New Zealand Health Survey 2013-2014 10.1 per cent of New Zealand children are obese (or 79,000 children are obese), up from 8.4 per cent in 2007.

Just over 22 per cent of children are classed as overweight in New Zealand, which equates to 176,000 children.

“We are now in the process

of establishing a clinical advisory and project implementation group for this new programme,” Mr Turp said.

“Once in place we will identify people who are going to be trained to deliver the programme across the South Island.”

Mr Turp said the alliance was aiming to initially train 20 tutors, with up to 10 based in Canterbury.

It was too early, however, to know whether there will be tutors in Mid Canterbury.

In the first year the programme is set to target up to 200 families, that number increasing to 900 over a three year period.

Ashburton GP spokeswoman Dr Charlotte Cox said a body mass index (BMI) calculation could identify overweight or obese children.

A healthy weight equates to a BMI of 20 to 25, under 19 is classed as underweight.

A score over 25 means the person is overweight and over 30 is obese, Dr Cox said.

“There was a time when this was considered inaccurate for children but now seems to be acceptable as a guide,” Dr Cox said.

However she said while it was helpful to have precise measures such as BMI or body fat percentage, physical fitness is also important.

Children have a fun time in the snow

Napier house fire Fire crews had to battle a large fire at a vacant house in Napier last night. The Fire Service was called to the blaze on Napier Terrace about 7.45pm. Fire Service spokesman David Meikle said six fire trucks attended. At this stage and it was too early to tell what had caused the fire, he said.

Witness Morgan Conneely said most of the house, which was still under construction, had burnt down. The 21-year-old said the flames could be seen “across the bay” at Eskdale, which was 15 to 20km away. Mr Conneely said fire crews, assisted by locals, had managed to get the blaze under control “pretty quick”.

Hefty fines Aucklanders are being warned they could face fines of up to $10,000 and daily penalties for not keeping their shrubbery away from power lines. The warning was included in a public notice from lines company Vector, which was published in yesterday’s New Zealand Herald. However, the company said yesterday it had never sought to impose the drastic fine and it was able to resolve disputes with consumers before reaching that point. Tree owners who ignored a “cut and trim” notice could face daily fines of $500 and be liable for costs if their tree damaged power lines or equipment.

MacGregor hits back Rachel MacGregor has accused former Conservative Party leader Colin Craig of trying to frame her “as a mistress”. The former press secretary made the claim in a tweet sent out last night. “Colin Craig is trying to frame me as a mistress. There was never a sexual relationship, nor was there consent for his inappropriate actions.”

Meanwhile the Conservative Party’s board may attempt to block Mr Craig from running again for the leadership role.

Board member John Stringer yesterday called for Mr Craig’s party membership to be cancelled.

In a statement, he said Mr Craig had “so prejudiced the interests of the party” that he should lose his membership status.

Lessons to be learned following snow trapping

As five snowed-in trampers were being rescued from the Mt Somers Track last week, another managed to successfully make his way out.

However, once the man, who had been walking in the area on his own, got to the Woolshed Creek carpark, he could not go any further due to his car being buried.

He phoned a roadside assist service, which could not get the car out, so he ended up staying the night in his car.

Mt Somers Walkway Society chairman Lew Shaw said yesterday the man had stayed at the Woolshed Creek hut before walking out to the carpark on the Friday.

It had started snowing on Thursday afternoon and by Friday morning over a metre had fallen, and the five trampers were airlifted about 10.40am.

As the drama unfolded, the man would have had his own problems, trudging through the snow on foot.

Mr Shaw said despite the man being able to walk out, his ad-

venture remained a lesson to all to check the forecast, as inclement weather had the potential to be life-threatening.

Mr Shaw said it was also a lesson to himself and fellow society members. He believed in future they would be checking the Woolshed Creek and Sharplin Falls carparks when there was a forecast for snow. It was a sobering thought to think the man’s car was at the Woolshed Creek carpark, pointing to the fact its owner was in the snowcovered hills, but apparently noone had seen it.

If the man had not been able to make it out for some reason, his car could have been there for up to a week before anyone noticed it.

Mt Somers Station owner David Acland said the man was a New Zealander and estimated to be aged in his 30s. Mr Acland had been in his truck around the area on Saturday when the police informed him of his whereabouts, and he got one of his staff operating a snowplough to make their way to the carpark.

By that time, the man was walking out. The staff member

took him back to the carpark and snowploughed a path for his car.

The man was not cold, tired or hungry, and had been wellprepared.

“He said it was hard going coming out from Woolshed Creek,” Mr Acland said.

Mr Acland said there were lots of people coming to the area over the weekend to play in the snow, and he would like to see the Ashburton District Council put signs up in the Mt Somers village, warning of the roads being only single lanes.

Taliban attack parliament The Taliban launched a complex attack on the Afghan parliament yesterday, with a suicide car bomber striking at the entrance and gunmen battling police as lawmakers were meeting inside to confirm the appointment of a defence minister, police and witnesses said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said the attack began with a car bomb explosion near the entrance.

Gunmen then attempted to storm the compound but were pushed back by security forces and eventually took refuge in a nearby building under construction, he said.

Sediqqi later said all seven attackers were killed by police.

He said no members of parliament were wounded in the incident. “It is over now,” he said.

Health Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ismail Kahousi said 18 civilians were wounded, including two women and two children.

Flying fingers don’t count as exercise Sue Newman

I

t might come as a shock to find that one in four children in New Zealand is considered overweight.

And yet it shouldn’t. Park outside a school, stop off at a swimming pool, walk through a mall and check out the number of children, some pre-schoolers who are carrying extra bulk.

Those youngsters are set up for a lifetime of battling the scales.

They didn’t get that way by accident. Yes, some were genetically predisposed to weight gain, but most got there through just two things – bad diet and a lack of exercise.

For some children, the best exercised part of their bodies is their fingers as they race across keyboards.

Unfortunately for some, sedentary ‘exercise’ is the norm.

They’re growing up in families where technology is just part of their lives – iPhones, iPads, iPpods. The world arrives at their fingertips and eyeballs without users having to leave the couch and it has the benefit of keeping kids quiet – for hours.

If it comes to a choice between technology and sport, sport’s the loser. Too much effort for the kids and for parents to get those kids off the couch and into the outdoors to do what kids do best, playing and burning off energy.

Add to that lack of exercise the imbalance in cost between food that is healthy and food that is not and the perfect storm for the kiddie fat generation is brewing. They’re paying the price in growing girth, growing inertia and ultimately ill health.

The medical profession is quite rightly worried. They’re picking up the pieces, taking the problem seriously and have developed a new intervention programme aimed at reversing the weighty trend through education. That won’t happen overnight unfortunately, it’s taken these kids a lifetime to get to where they are on the scales, but they won’t have a lifetime if they don’t shape up and lose weight.

YOUR VIEW Council spending Having not received a reply to my questions during the recent question time I would appreciate someone getting the answers to these questions.

■ How many staff does the Ashburton Art Gallery have compared with 2012/13?

■ The art gallery budget plan for 2015/16 shows that wages and salaries will be $191,000 compared with $117,419 in 2012/13. This is an increase of 38.5 per cent in three years (my pension has increased by 7.3 per cent over the same period.)

■ As the Ashburton District Council, in their wisdom, no longer charges the gallery for rent, rates, electricity or security why have they increased the grant to them from $175,000 to $300,000

Live sheep export win-win for New Zealand, Mexico

here’s been a great deal of attention given to the export of 50,000 live sheep to Mexico during the past couple of weeks.

Much of the discussion has been an emotional response to occurrences many years ago, with little reflection of the realities of this practice today.

The modern ships used for this transportation have sophisticated ventilation systems, efficient feeding systems and a team of handlers led by veterinarians.

Before shipping, the animals are quarantined at a suitable location where they can be transitioned on to the hard feed they will consume on the voyage. At this time the animals will receive any animal health remedies they may require and their health will be monitored. Any animals not adapting are removed.

ico were required to be shorn before they were shipped so they could handle the climate they would be encountering.

Much attention was given to the high temperatures in parts of Mexico presently, but it should be noted these sheep are destined for the cooler areas of the country.

Some criticism has been made of the possible loss of genetics from the animals on this shipment.

Farmers will always retain as many of their highest ranking genetic animals as they can. In a world where lamb consumption is small com-

pared with many competing proteins, if New Zealand can help improve the quality of product, and hence the eating experience, that must be of benefit to future lamb global consumption. In world lamb markets we do not need to be competing with other lamb producers. Our real competition is with other protein, such as seafood, chicken and pork.

Mexico is coming out of a period of drought and its government deems it important to rebuild the national flock. At the same time many South Island farmers are still in severe drought conditions with winter upon them. This is an opportunity for them to lighten the stocking rate as they approach the feed stress period.

It also needs to be remembered that under present New Zealand regulations sheep can not be exported for slaughter

at the country of destination, without an exemption issued by the Minister for Primary Industries to allow it, which has never been issued.

Any company exporting sheep is going to ensure they are not slaughtered on arrival as with the investment they undertake they will not want to jeopardise this consignment or any possible future consignments.

This consignment of sheep to Mexico is a win-win outcome for farmers severely affected by drought on both ends. The company conducting the transaction has operated within the regulations as laid down by both governments and the process is being monitored to ensure the stock’s welfare.

Migration hits new annual high

BY SUZE METHERELL New Zealand annual migration rose to a fresh record in May as fewer locals left for Australia, while more returned from across the Tasman, and more students from India and China arrived.

The country reported a net gain of 57,800 migrants in the year through May, ahead of a 36,400 gain in the year earlier period, and the 10th consecutive month where migration has broken records, Statistics New Zealand said. Migrant arrivals rose 15 per cent from the year earlier, while departures slipped 10 per cent.

New Zealand’s annual net migration already beat the Treasury’s forecast peak of 56,600, and is closing in on the 60,000 figure used for the basis of the Budget’s economic upside scenario. Under that framework, the Treasury expected faster

Air New Zealand said it wasn’t expecting any job losses as a result of the sale of its Safe Air engineering subsidiary to European aerospace giant Airbus Group.

In a statement, the national carrier said it had signed a conditional agreement to sell the wholly-owned subsidiary to Airbus Group Australia Pacific, which is a major supplier to the Australian defence forces and civil helicopter retailer.

The value of the deal, which is expected to be completed next month, is being kept confidential.

Today’s figures show the smallest annual net outflow to Australia since 1992, with a net loss of 1400 people leaving to Australia in the year ended May 31, down from 9700 last year, and 32,900 in 2013, Statistics NZ said.

On a monthly basis, New Zealand had a net inflow of 533 migrants from Australia in May, extending the gain from April, which was the first time New Zealand reported a monthly gain from across the Tasman since 1991.

Record inbound migration has been bolstered by an increase in international students, led by Indian and Chinese arrivals. Indian arrivals doubled to a net gain of 12,100 on an annual basis, from 6585 arrivals a year

said in a statement.

The shares climbed 23 percent to 70 cents, the highest level since July last year.

The proposal is subject to a number of conditions including due diligence, exclusivity, no material adverse change in the company’s affairs, New Zealand Overseas Investment Office approval, and no change in the number of shares on issue.

“The last condition is particularly relevant as the company was well advanced in planning for an equity raising,” the com-

pany said. A2 Milk’s board is seeking further information in order to evaluate the proposal before updating the market and said no further comment would be made at this time.

The single biggest shareholder in the company is Australian-based Freedom Food Group with 19.14 per cent, which increased its stake this month.

First NZ Capital and Milford Asset Management also both gave notice of substantial shareholdings this month.

MARKET REPORT Dairy Last week’s cold snap was a reminder that plenty of winter is yet to come and a recalculation of feed reserves may be needed as the demand increases with the very cold conditions.

At present feed grains and palm kernel are in good supply and relatively cheap, but with the recent weather demand can change fast, so managers should continually be planning well ahead.

El Nino signs are still being witnessed in the global weather patterns and such an occurrence in the new season may bring more weather challenges to east coast locations desperate for a recharge of groundwater and stored lake levels.

There has now been seven consecutive falls for dairy commodities traded via the auction platform and analysts predict little upward movement until this year’s stocks are consumed and offer little hope trade will resume with Russia.

They are, however, suggesting that powder prices may be near the bottom as European SMP is near the intervention level, and imported milk powders are cheaper than the domestic raw milk price in China.

Grass-fed gaining traction in US

A Superbowl advertisement from Carl’s Jnr for grass-fed burgers shows the demand for pasture-based food is going mainstream in the United States, according to the managing director of Synlait.

Following on from the dairy processor’s announcement of a partnership with a US baby products manufacturer for an infant formula derived from cows exclusively grazed on a

pasture and crop based diet, John Penno said grass-fed beef in the US sells at a three-fold premium to standard beef.

“So it’s really building momentum.”

Mr Penno said the demand was based on science from 20 years ago that showed meat and milk fats from grass-fed ruminants was considerably better than fat from ruminants living in barns on artificial diets.

“For New Zealand that’s just wonderful.”

Wealthy consumers have a huge resource available online and are spending the time finding out what’s important to them, including what they want in their food, he said and that was driving “better thinking” about food.

“You’ve got wealthy people starting to think about what’s natural.”

Californian company Munchkin plans to launch its grass-fed branded retail-ready

infant formula into the US and China.

It will be exclusively manufactured by Synlait and will offer farmers a 25c premium above the $5.50kg/ms forecast for next season.

Synlait supplier, Leeston dairy farmer Michael Woodward, may be one of the first 25 to 40 suppliers Synlait requires to fulfill their con-

tract as his current farming system revolves around pasture feeding.

Mr Woodward said the partnership was great for the industry and in particular for those farmers with smaller herds already on grass-fed systems.

“It’s going to set them (Synlait) apart from everyone else.

“In a low pay-out year it’s money for doing basically nothing and a light at the end of the tunnel.”

ATS ambitions curtailed by Ruralco

ATS’s ambitions to go nationwide has been curtailed by Ravensdown pulling out of Ruralco.

However, it was justified because of the “real and difficult” competition the co-op is facing, according to a director.

Proof that the co-operative faces an uncertain future was highlighted in the overall drop in revenue for ATS group with an almost 50 per cent drop in revenue from 2013-14.

Overall ATS group declined from a $5.3 million profit before taxation in 2013 to a $261,000 loss in 2014. Of that ATS’s 50 per cent share in RuralCo accounted for $44,000 of that loss.

This was reflected in the average spend of members decreasing from $85,000 in 2013 to $42, 000 in 2014.

In comparison Farmlands, which operates nationwide, made a net profit before taxation of $23.4 million with a turnover of $2.5 billion. It increased its profit in a tight agricultural

market by 50 per cent from 2013.

However, ATS board chairman Phil McKendry said the 2013/14 accounts were “not normal” because of the Ruralco integration and that post balance date a substantial dividend was paid from Ruralco to ATS that more than offset the previous deficit.

“It put us back on line and on our normal profitability track.”

ATS and Ruralco director Ian Mackenzie said it was more than just a tight market for ATS.

“It’s (ATS) facing real and difficult competition from companies that deal nationwide.”

As a small regional player the co-op was under pressure to retain its commercial competitiveness.

“It’s absolutely appropriate that we employ strategies to try to retain our position and to be able to put competition into the marketplace.”

Mr Mackenzie said the 50/50 Ruralco venture between ATS and Ravensdown didn’t work “for a variety of reasons” but it

did not mean that there wasn’t still a “very profitable and strong little card business” remaining.

When asked about the financial cost of rolling Ruralco out nationwide Mr Mackenzie said while Ruralco was not as successful as the board would have liked, it did not mean they shouldn’t have attempted it.

“We’ve now pulled back to make sure that we recoup ATS’ overall position.”

Last week Farmlands said the door was always open to a merger with ATS.

Honouring those who served

W

e are being encouraged to remember and commemorate those who fought in World War One and Two. Over the past weeks I have seen advertisements for concerts and even a commemorative walk to take place in Ashburton and I am sure there will be many other events in the months and years to come.

As people today look for ways to honour those who served, others have an interest in how people

commemorated the same people in the past.

The most obvious are the memorials that dot our landscape – from large monuments such as our cenotaph in Baring Square, to memorial gates and halls.

Some groups, such as clubs, areas or schools often commissioned an honours board to hang in a prominent position in their halls or meeting rooms. Some featured the names of all those who served, while others focused solely on those who died.

boards in the collection.

Before arriving in our new museum, the boards were very difficult to access. Space was short enough, but the majority of boards are large and heavy. Many had the names transcribed so we knew who was on the board, but we couldn’t give people the opportunity to view them. Now they are hung in our object store so, on request, they are easily accessed.

The boards come from a variety of sources, including schools, lodges and bands.

While the names of soldiers can be accessed from a number of sources these boards are an important insight into the lives of those listed. They give an insight into who these men were before they enlisted.

The local family history group is undertaking a project to record all the military honours boards in the district.

If you have an honours board that they haven’t viewed yet, let them, or us, know.

Ashburton Dressage Group, autumn series results

Harriet Redmond riding Teodoro in a Level 4 test in the Ashburton Dressage Group’s Winter Series final at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Sunday.

It was fresh start with a chilly -1 degrees when the equestrians readied for action.

The overall winner on the day was Debbie Eddington and Bella but it was Tiffany Ottley and Three Aces that took home the Blue Heaven trophy as the top combination across the three days of the series.

Ottley was also the Horse and Pony Level 2 Series Champion.

Level 3 Series Champion was Nicola Sim and Chocolate, with Sarah Waddelll and River Rock ruling in Level 4.

Horse Level 1 Series Champion was Sarah MacLeod and The Analyst and the pony Level 1 honours went to Harriet Stock and Chesapeake Bay. The group has their annual dressage tournament in September.

Naholo comes of age Standout Highlanders winger Waisake Naholo was a teenager still at school when he was picked for first class rugby honours for Wanganui. The 24-year-old has made another big leap into the first All Black squad for 2015.

Naholo was one of five new faces in the extended squad of 41 named by Steve Hansen to prepare for next month’s test against Samoa in Apia.

Naholo has been in irresistible form for the Highlanders this year, with his two tries in Saturday night’s 24-14 win over the Chiefs in the Super 15 playoff in Dunedin lifting his tally to 11 and surpassing Jeff Wilson’s record number of 10 tries in a season for the franchise.

The likelihood Naholo was getting a call-up was all but confirmed when it was revealed that night the young winger had been released from the two-year contract he signed in February to join French Top 14 club, ASM Clermont Auvergne.

Former Wanganui coach Guy Lennox, who tapped the teenaged Naholo to join his 2009 Heartland team (which went on to win the Meads Cup final against Mid Canterbury that year), was in Dunedin for the game and spoke to his former charge.

“That’s a rag-to-riches story - these kids come to Wanganui and get an opportunity and it all works out for them.”

Born in Sigatoka, Fiji, Naholo’s first experiences of rugby were playing with friends as they used an old plastic bottle as a ball.

Like many young islanders, he came to New Zealand for education and employment prospects, which was where Lennox first met him six years ago.

“I guess, by chance, I was asked to take City College one training, had never heard of the bloke,” Lennox said.

He spotted the strong-looking teenager and asked about

him, before taking the punt and introducing him into the Heartland team.

“You just see something in someone.

“You couldn’t have said back then he was going to be an All Black, but I certainly saw a kid with some raw ability.”

Naholo proved to Lennox the adage that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough, as he scored six tries in 11 appearances for Wanganui before moving to Taranaki to play in the ITM Cup. “It was no surprise he was snapped up by Taranaki,” said former WRFU official and historian JB Phillips.

“He just showed a lot of promise, scored a lot of tries for us that year.”

Naholo would earn his first New Zealand jumpers as part of the 2011 Under 20’s team that defended their world championship in Italy, and the NZ Sevens team for their 2012 IRB World Series tournament in Wellington.

After being in the Hurricanes wider training group for 2012, Naholo was in strong form for Taranaki as they started the year with the Ranfurly Shield, with his five tries in eight appearances earning a 2013 contract with the Auckland Blues.

However, he would make only two appearances for the franchise in 2013, scoring one try in his second match against his future Highlanders teammates.

Lennox said Naholo had been a “young fella who got a bit lost in the big city” while in Auckland.

He returned to Taranaki and was a key member of the team’s march to their first ITM premiership title last year - the first time since Manawatu in 1980 that a province from outside the major centres had won the NPC first division title.

Shirley Boys comfortably beat Ashburton College to the tune of 45-0 in the UC Rugby Championship in Christchurch on Saturday.

With some key experience watching from the injury ward, Dave McCrea’s side also looked to shake off the distraction of the Ashburton College ball the night before.

Instead they were shaken up by a strong Shirley side.

“We broke out early on and almost scored but that was about it,” McCrea said.

“With about 15 to go and down 45-0 we finally decided to have a go at them, but it was too little, too late.”

Sunshine Coast Falcons forward James Ackerman died in a Brisbane hospital yesterday after suffering a critical head injury in a Queensland state league match against the Norths Devils at Bishop Park on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old father of two was felled in a tackle in the fourth minute of the game and suffered a major brain injury. The player involved in the tackle, Francis Molo, is reportedly “not in a good way” and being offered support.

Molo is contracted to the Broncos and made his NRL debut for the club last year.

“He’s a lot more confident in his ability now and that’s shown in his form,” Lennox said.

Phillips agreed. “He’s the main talking point in the competition.

“He’s got everything going for him, he’s a [Jonah] Lomu in a way.

“His defence was suspect at

times, but he’s brushed up on that. Wanganui should be very proud he started his career here.

“He becomes another statistic for Wanganui - a player who became an All Black after he left.

There was about a dozen or so.”

Hansen’s squad of 41 will be trimmed to around 29 ahead of the July 8 test, with the rest preparing for that Samoan game and the Rugby Championship with Australia and South Africa.

en’s eight that has designs on a place in Rio next year; they made a positive start with a fifth place in their first outing.

The eight had lined up alongside the current Olympic and world champions USA, Great Britain and Australia in the heats and finished fourth to move to the repechage.

There they were fifth going

into the final quarter of the race but showed fighting spirit to gain on Germany and show they deserved the A final, finishing fourth for the all-important berth in the A final, where Dyke was changed into the bow seat.

Having been pipped by their trans-Tasman rivals in the previous two races, the New Zea-

land eight got the jump on the Australians early and would finish five seconds clear and they went within a whisker of fourth place - edged on the line by China by 0.050.

New Zealand’s 6:13.120 was 10 seconds off winner USA. The Americans took the win by a comfortable two-second margin on the Canadians with

a further three seconds back to Great Britain.

It still will have been a confidence booster for the new-look eight who will look to improve in Lucerne next month at the third world cup event.

In all, New Zealand had 10 crews feature in the A finals in Varese to finish with four gold, one silver and one bronze.

Mainland mix show form

Mid Canterbury netballers will attend the under 19 national championships in Auckland next month as part of a Mainland Combined team.

The earlier plans of a combined Mid and South team fell through largely due to a clash with the Roncalli ball.

So Mid Canterbury went to Mainland Netball for a solution - the result was that the wider Canterbury region will now

send three competitive teams to the under 19 nationals in Auckland.

Christchurch got first dibs and once they had selected their team, the other centres and other Christchurch players trialled for the other two teams - Selwyn and Mainland.

Mid Canterbury’s Andrea Cousins will take the Mainland team – which has Mid Canterbury defenders Kate Lloyd, a New Zealand secondary school triallist, and Sophie Worsfold,

with the pair set to extend their College A combination to representative level.

Former college shooter Chelsea Corbett, now playing for Halswell in the Christchurch Premier competition, was also selected.

Of the 11-strong Mainland squad, Mid Canterbury supplies three players with five from Christchurch, two from North Canterbury and one from Nelson.

After being selected, the

Mainland team – without training - entered a Queen’s Birthday Tournament in Christchurch recording wins over Southland and Selwyn before being well beaten by top four contender Dunedin and as well as a sevengoal loss to Christchurch.

They had another solid hitout at a tournament in Timaru and have since had two official trainings which - due to the players living so far apart - is a task in itself.

to fly down for trainings, and is picked up by the North Canterbury contingent on the way through to training at the new EA Networks Centre in Ashburton.

Also flying the Mid Canterbury flag will be shooter Caitlyn Adlam who was named in the Selwyn team - which had the makings of a team to begin with but required a couple of players to provide the depth for the nationals.

The nationals start on July 6.
