Man returns and throttles woman
An Ashburton man who attacked a woman twice and was later found in possession of a mace has been sent to prison. Shane Allen Shanahan, 31, appeared for sentencing before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. Shanahan, who has been on custodial remand since April, was returned to prison to serve a 14-month sentence on charges of assaulting a woman, assault with intent to injure and possessing an offensive weapon.

In the midst of an argument Shanahan shoved his finger down his victim’s throat. She required hospital treatment for the injuries she sustained in the attack. Police were called back to the address a couple of weeks later and a safety order was issued against Shanahan directing him to stay off the property for two days. He returned later that day and attacked the same person involved in the earlier assault. The victim was grabbed from behind
