Prison for man with disability A young man cited as having an intellectual disability is waiting out his court remand in prison, because of a lack of custodial options.

Brett Allan King, 23, of Tinwald, admitted two charges of burglary, driving while forbidden and two of dishonestly taking a motor vehicle in the Ashburton District Court last month. The offending occurred in March.

He was remanded on bail on a 24hour curfew to his caregiver’s address, on the condition he refrained from possessing or using drugs or alcohol.

He was due back in court for sentencing on Monday, where reports had been prepared for communitybased sentencing options However, his caregiver had found the arrangement too stressful to continue with. “(Caregiver) can’t house him anymore – she’s done her best but she is finding him increasingly diffi-

cult,” King’s lawyer Michelle Barrell said.

“It seems there is no option other than to remand him in custody.”

Ms Barrell said she had found an available hospital bed, but Judge Joanna Maze said her hands were tied.

“I can’t remand anyone to a hospital – last time I tried that the hospital rebelled,” she said.

Ms Barrell said the nature of King’s disability fell outside the criteria for mental health support.

Judge Maze ordered an intellectual disability report to be prepared before King appears for sentencing.

In the meantime he was remanded in custody.

“I have no choice – I have nowhere else to send you to until I get this report,” Judge Maze told him.

King’s next appearance will be by video link from prison to the Christchurch District Court next week.

Teenager Anja Nissen may have just won The Voice, but she still clearly remembers the day nine years ago when Kyle Sandilands judged her on Australian Junior Idol. The 18-yearold beat Victorian’s Jackson Thomas and Johnny Rollins in Monday night’s grand final, the pair finishing second and third respectively. She’s now $100,000 richer and has been offered a record deal by her coach and The Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am. But despite all the sudden success, Nissen, who’s been singing since she was six, just wanted to remind Sandilands that Tuesday morning wasn’t the first time they’d met. “Do you remember judging me on Junior Idol at Westfield when I was nine,” she asked him during an interview on the Kiis FM breakfast show. “I got to meet you.”

Sandilands admitted he couldn’t recall, but was intrigued. “How were you, were you good?”

Sandilands asked. “You didn’t think I was nine,” Nissen responded. “You thought I was like 12 and so you didn’t believe me.” Nine years later and Nissen said she’s over the moon at the amount of support she’s received on The Voice, which was voted entirely by the public for the first time.

Franklin arrested A former member of the R&B group Destiny’s Child has been arrested near Myrtle Beach in the US. Online records show 33-year-old Farrah Franklin was booked into the Horry County jail in South Carolina on Monday (NZ time) on a charge of disorderly conduct. Franklin was released several hours later after posting $NZ322 ($A302.95) bond.

Court records listed no attorney for her and no details of her arrest were immediately available.

Extra enrolments stretch schools

Some Mid Canterbury schools are experiencing unexpected pupil increases with term three enrolments.

As schools were preparing to find solutions for their schools continued growth, the new term has brought additional pupils into the fold.

Tinwald School principal Peter Livingston said earlier this month the primary school would no longer accept pupils from outside the Tinwald zone. It was the same at Meth-

ven Primary School. However, Mr Livingston said three extra enrolments from inside the zone had been taken and meant the school had started its 10th classroom for new entrants.

“At the moment there are five new entrants but we are expecting another 15 during the year.”

“Currently we have 240 pupils and should finish at 255256.”

Tinwald School already had its resources stretched and was currently building two new classrooms.

“We now have every available

teaching space being used and still have a class in the library,” he said.

Within hours of talking to the Guardian, Mr Livingston had taken an additional two enrolments.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said their 349 pupils was “up for us” and Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis said the rural primary school had just enrolled its 200th pupil.

The pupil got a special hat for the honour.

Mr Ellis said there had been

“four new enrolments from out of the blue” and the roll was expected to be 207 at the beginning of August.

The highest roll at Rakaia School was 210 pupils back in 1890 but he predicted the roll would break that level at some stage this year.

Secondary school level had also been affected with Ashburton College principal Grant McMillian taking on six new enrolments for term three.

He expected a couple more in the coming days.

“Ashburton College doesn’t

have a zone, so virtually any student has the right to attend here,” he said.

The Ministry of Education had tasked the 23 schools in the wider Ashburton district to find solutions as they faced challenges dealing with future school rolls.

The ministry had no fixed view about possible solutions but said they would work with schools to get solutions to meet their needs.

There were 13 schools that had imposed enrolment zones to manage roll growth.

Call to establish a kohanga reo By susan sandys

Ashburton preschoolers would benefit from the establishment of a kohanga reo in the town, says an early childhood centre manager.

Phoenix Preschool’s Jo MacAskill said a kohanga reo would help take pressure off booming preschool rolls, as well as provide valuable tuition in Te Reo. Other Ashburton preschools could “create a reciprocal relationship” with such a facility, and mutual visits could help children “experience that culture first-hand in an environment they are comfortable with and used to”.

The waiting list at Phoenix was up to 18 months, down from two years as of earlier this year when the centre expanded by adding an infant room.

“You do feel for families, especially if they have come from out of town, to actually

get into a preschool is really difficult,” Mrs MacAskill said.

The waiting list had remained despite about seven new Mid Canterbury preschools being established in the past five years, part of as many as over 20 facilities in the whole of the district, including playcentres and kindergartens.

Mrs MacAskill said she would like to see Government and local government initiatives encouraging the introduction of such facilities in communities like Ashburton.

Hakatere Marae Komiti member Janet Benfell agreed it would be good to see Government support for establishing such facilities.

However, she did not see a huge need in Mid Canterbury, especially considering a kohanga reo was potentially complicated and difficult to establish.

A kohanga reo at the

marae about 20 years ago had closed down.

There had been a qualification barrier for teachers due to growing teaching requirements. Another facility established a couple of years ago in Ashburton had also folded.

“It’s funding, finding a central place, finding the teachers, it’s not easy,” Mrs Benfell said.

She felt Mid Canterbury preschools and primary schools were doing a good job meeting the demand for teaching Te Reo in the district.

“There’s a kapa haka at Mayfield of all places,” Mrs Benfell said.

Ashburton campaign grows

When Jeff Bradley said ‘no’ to Telecom’s $1.50 charge for a paper print out of his phone bill, he unwittingly became the champion of thousands of angry Kiwis.

Annoyed that people who received their Telecom bill through the mail were being charged a $1.50 handling fee, Mr Bradley took his fight to the top. He contacted MPs Tony Ryall and Amy Adams and Labour leader David Cunliffe. He’s been fobbed off by

the politicians, but he says he won’t give up.

On Monday he spoke at a Grey Power meeting and now has the backing of the organisation’s Ashburton members and he’s working with Aged Concern in Christchurch to mount a fight in the city too.

“The ball’s rolling and it’s gaining momentum. This has to be done because it’s not just Telecom. The other telecommunication companies are doing it or are talking about it and the power companies will be next,” he said.

If no one fights the handling fee for paper bills, $1.50 would soon become $5 when other utilities followed suit, Mr Bradley said.

“Pensions don’t go up but everything else is going up.

I need volunteers to help me fight this because I’m not giving up. I’m taking this all the way to Parliament.”

He’s since discovered that the bill fee rort is worse than he thought.

“I’ve now discovered that not only are we being charged $1.50 for paper bills but we’re

also charged another $1.50 by NZ Post to handle the bill payment. That’s $3 just because we choose not to pay online.”

If your bill is emailed and you choose to print it out and pay it at NZ Post, then that means you’re still stung with a $1.50 handling fee, he said.

Mr Bradley fears he’s opened a can of worms but said he’s committed to ensuring that every Kiwi who does not receive and pay bills online, understands just how much they’re being charged for doing business the traditional way.

Jen Branje is on a mission, a mission to bring bees back into the urban environment.

Bee populations world wide are dwindling and she sees her feed the bee project as a way to ensure bees are encouraged back into Ashburton gardens.

“Bees are imperative to the survival of not only plant species but for human beings and I want to educate and raise awareness in the community about the plight of bee populations,” she said.

That awareness, however, has a practical aspect to it. Mrs Branje is growing bee friendly plants she will be offering to people – free of charge.

She’s potted cuttings from her own garden and is hoping keen gardeners will allow her into their gardens to take more cuttings of pollen rich, bee friendly plants.

The cuttings will be stored at Wastebusters and gardeners can simply pick them up and take them home.

“It’s a simple scheme, it’s self funding and there’s very little effort involved.

It’s not only sustaining the bees its encouraging a nicer environment. A lot of people can’t afford to buy plants and these are free,” she said.

The bee friendly plant scheme is cost neutral apart from the need for potting mix and Mrs Branje has another simple scheme to fund that.

“I’m encouraging a community seed drive, where people pop a packet of vegetable seeds into their grocery basket, leave them at Wastebusters and we’ll grow seedlings from these that we’ll then sell through Wastebusters,” she said.

Mrs Branje already has dozens of pots of cuttings wintering over in her backyard, ready to be given away.

She’s a keen gardener and for three years of campervan life lugged plants from temporary stop to temporary stop.

That roaming is over and the Branjes and their plants now have a permanent home in Fairton.

The project has the support of both Wastebusters and staff at the Ashburton Domain. It is also being promoted through Facebook and public support has been huge, she said.

Tired? Take a nap Methven Police are reminding motorists to pull over and have a catnap if they are tired, following a driver crashing at Mayfield on Monday. The 20-year-old farm worker is believed to have fallen asleep before veering off the road and hitting a power pole. Methven constable Aaron Tapp said the man suffered a cut to his leg and sore ribs caused by his seat belt. He was taken to Ashburton Hospital for observation. A passing motorist alerted emergency services. “He was lucky that his injuries weren’t more severe,” Mr Tapp said. The car was extensively damaged and the power pole required repairs.

Moore St burglary Police are investigating a burglary at a Moore Street address overnight Monday.

Domestic incident Police attended a domestic in Ashburton at 5.30pm on Monday.

Scottish concert All things Scottish will be celebrated on Sunday when the Ashburton County Scottish Society holds a ceilidh. The concert will feature a range of entertainment including the Southern Celtic Fiddle orchestra, bagpipe music and Scottish dancing and singing.

The event starts at 2pm and will be held in the Balmoral Hall.

Afternoon tea is provided.

Ambulance calls Ashburton’s St John ambulance service travelled 3102 kilometres last week attending 79 calls.

Nineteen of those were urgent callouts, 66 were medical and 13 were to accidents.

Outside farmers send in feed Northland farmers struggling to feed their stock after recent floods will get some relief from today when the first of five truckloads of feed arrive.

Northland Rural Support Trust (NRST) spokeswoman Julie Jonkers said farmers were struggling after three bad storms in the past two months, but the generosity of the farming community in Taranaki and Bay of Plenty means five truckloads of feed are on their way.

“It’s just a drop in the bucket of what we need up here, but it’s an amazing response and shows the farming community sticks together in times of adversity like this,” Ms Jonkers said.

Meanwhile, NRST and Dairy NZ have organised free lunches and dinners this week for Northland farmers affected by the storms and associated flooding.

Ms Jonkers said the events were an opportunity for farmers to get off the land, talk about their situation with others and enjoy a free meal.

Pukekura couple Peter and Justine Salter have cooked their last possum pie. The Bushman’s Centre owners had been prosecuted by the Ministry of Primary Industries with preparing possum meat for consumption in a way that was not in line with a proper risk management programme. Mr Salter said yesterday he had not been selling the meat ever since the charges were first brought by MPI, and would not be doing so again. MPI had hinted that if the Salters stuck to certain guidelines laid down by the ministry, they would drop the court charges. Mr Salter said the new food safety regime included no more possum meat being caught and sold by him, and the couple completing a food handling course.

Hauiti withdraws National list MP Claudette Hauiti has decided to withdraw from the election and politics altogether.

She has already been selected as National’s candidate in the Kelston electorate, which is thought to be a safe Labour seat. She told National MPs at their caucus meeting yesterday. Her decision comes a few days before National releases its list ranking and Ms Hauiti may have been warned she would get a low list ranking. She recently returned her parliamentary credit card after using it for personal spending.

Support services stretched

Some of Ashburton’s social services are experiencing an influx of people drawing on services and it’s expected to worsen.

Salvation Army Family Store was short on warm supplies as reported in the Guardian yesterday.

But Presbyterian Support had also had an increase in demand with people who wanted curtains through Community Energy Action curtain bank.

Manager Jackie Girvan said more people had ordered curtains but they had been slow to return.

“We have certainly had an increase in curtain bank referrals

but struggling to get any back,” Mrs Girvan said.

Whether it was due to a surge in demand, or a lack of staff in Christchurch it was unsure but the curtain bank offered a range of free quality, recycled lined curtains for anyone who needed them.

It covered Ashburton, Christchurch and North Canterbury.

Mrs Girvan said a number of people about town had trouble getting dry firewood and would likely resort to heaters.

There were also a number of rental houses with fireplaces that tenants were unable to use.

“Getting dry fire wood this year is an issue. Lots of trees

came down last September but much of this wood won’t be dry enough until next year,” she said.

While there had not been an increase with people looking for help with excessive power bills, Mrs Girvan thought it might just be a matter of time.

Ashburton Budget Advisory Services acting co-ordinator Joan Lawn agreed.

“We have had one or two but haven’t had a big influx just yet,” she said.

She expected it to get worse.

“People come in with power bills but they come in too late when it’s just about to be cut off.”

“We would rather they came

in earlier than later,” she said.

Mrs Lawn recommended once people expected a large bill to make an appointment straight away. There were systems like ‘smooth pay’ where people paid a set weekly power amount throughout the year.

But ideally people should put aside money for the winter and gather firewood supplies in the summer so it was dried in time, she said.

Salvation Army community food bank manager Judith Lilley said numbers accessing the food bank were up on last year with more wage earners accessing the service.

Living reminder of our heritage

Mid Canterbury schools have been offered a touch of history with a living donation from the District Council as part of the Ashburton Domain’s 150th celebrations.

All 23 schools were offered an English beech tree. The same species as planted in the Ashburton Domain in memory of pioneer nurse Florence Nightingale, likely the most prominent tree in the domain.

They had until August 20 to take up the offer.

The memorial tree in the domain (opposite the waterwheel) was planted in 1910 by Ashburton mayoress Mrs Henry Davis. At the celebration children from various schools laid wreaths and sprays of flowers around the tree.

An essay competition was also established for pupils to write about the life of Miss Nightingale’s life, work and character. It was intended to be an annual event.

The inaugural winner was Mayfield School’s Daisy Brannon.

Ashburton District Council horticultural co-ordinator Rhonda Gallagher said most

Mid Canterbury children had been to the domain, the playground or the paddling pool or sporting events on site.

“It really has been a part of people’s lives for a long time and for years to come,” she said.

“We’re hoping that these trees will be around in the next 150 years, plus the domain will be around in 150 years.

“The schools and their grounds are like little mini domains, some schools have got huge big notable trees and great areas and hopefully they will be here in another 150 years too.”

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said the gift was a great opportunity to get a significant reminder of Ashburton’s heritage.

“It’s a really positive initiative on behalf of the council,” he said.

The tree was likely to grow up to 40 metres tall and 10 metres wide.

Greymouth fountain freezes in the cold Frosts were the order of the day as the mercury struggled to get over -1°C anywhere on the West Coast at daybreak.

Greymouth’s exposed aerodrome weather station cracked its first frost of the year, at -1°C, while the grass minimum temperature got down

to -5.6°C. Temperatures were cold enough to freeze the top of the Grey District Council fountain.

Hokitika was not spared the cold weather. West Weather observer Mark Crompton said the air temperature at the airport fell to -3.6°C just before

A Guinness World Record A tattoo sleeve six years in the making has given Auckland man Lee Weir a Guinness World Record.

The 27-year-old abstained from drinking booze last year and spent the money he otherwise would have spent on beer on 41 tattoos of TV’s biggest beer drinker – Homer Simpson.

Mr Weir approached Guinness World Records, who said a record for the most Homer Simpson tattoos was “too niche”.

After much to-ing and fro-ing a new record was created, for the most tattoos of a single cartoon character.

Mr Weir got his first tattoo of Homer in 2007, and knew he wanted to create a sleeve on his left arm in tribute to his favourite TV show.

His initial idea was to get a bunch of different characters from The Simpsons, but he discovered there were too many to choose from.

“I couldn’t decide who to put on and who to leave off. How do you include Lenny and not Carl? How do you include Moe but not Sideshow Bob?” Mr Weir decided upon the idea of Homer in different guises and last year, with tattoo artist Ben Jenkins, designed the sleeve featuring his favourite Homers.

An episode index from season one to season 20 served as the inspiration for finding all instances where Homer was not Homer.

Baby Homer inside the womb, Homer as a donut and Homer dressed up as Krusty when he went to clown college are all featured.

After 25 hours under the needle and more than $2000 spent, the work was complete.

Villages change buying plans

The arrival of retirement villages in Ashburton is changing the house buying patterns of Ashburton retirees.

Complexes, complete with community centres, have been built at Rosebank, Lochlea and Terrace View and real estate agent Jenny Gray said the new living option for older people was having a small, but noticeable effect on the townhouse market.

“People in their late 70s are now thinking twice about what they’re buying, they’re looking at setting themselves up for when they are old and deciding to move once rather than twice,” she said.

The retirement village concept was relatively new to Ashburton, but it was a concept that was generating interest among older people who were selling larger family homes and looking for a smaller house and section, Mrs Gray said.

“For some of them, making that move is attractive because they’re going where they’ll have back up later somewhere they can lock their house up and go away without worrying about gardens.”

She believes the trend towards retirement village living will grow as a new generation of retirees takes a different approach to housing options in their ‘younger’ retirement years.

Lochlea Lifestyle resort manager Tony Sands says is seeing a steady stream of people who definitely do not fit the traditional aged care model, moving into villas in his village.

“Most of ours are in their 70s and 80s and are still very fit,” he said.

Because the retirement village concept was still new to Ashburton, many people still thought they were for ‘old people’ rather than a place that offered a good lifestyle option for anyone over 60, Mr Sands said.

He’s fielding one or two inquiries a week from potential buyers and said eight new houses were under construction. “I’ve written 20 agreements since January and we’re

so busy we’ve had to employ extra builders,” he said.

For people opting to buy a licence to occupy property in a retirement village, one of the big attractions was of the community centre that provided a social hub for the complex, Mr Sands said.

Terrace View’s lifestyle villas and apartments have all sold, with resource consent granted for the next stage of independent living accommodation in that village.

And demand for villas in the Rosebank Retirement complex is steady, said co-ordinator Kathleen Thompson.

She is looking at almost a full house, with 25 units built and more planned.

Memories, rubble only things left of shop

Once it kept staff and patients at Ashburton Hospital well fed with lunch treats and lollies, but today, the business that was known as The Hospital Shop has disappeared on the back of a truck.

It’s early life may be lost in time, but there are still Ashburtonians who remember the day of the Elizabeth Street shop as a Four Square store and later as a convenience store that did most of its trade with visitors to Ashburton Hospital.

Tony Read is one of those for whom the old shop has fond memories. It was his home and his family’s place of business from 1968 to 1979. It provided a solid income for mum and dad Trevor and Elaine and it was a source of casual work for the three Read children.

Greymouth 150 With a cup of tea and not a hint of a lynching, Greymouth quietly marked its 150th anniversary yesterday. Some of the town’s wisest residents from the three rest homes gathered at Caf DP1 on Mawhera Quay, where it all began on July 22, 1864 when Collingwood storekeeper Reuben Waite sailed across the Grey River bar in a chartered paddle steamer the SS Nelson, along with 70 gold prospectors, landed his supplies on the riverbank and ran up the first store in the future town. That site, carved out of the Maori potato gardens for the Mawhera village, was to become the corner of Mawhera Quay and Waite Street, a site now occupied by Cafe DP1 (DP1 refers to the first deposit plan for the town).

at 9pm. For the Read youngsters there were big benefits to living behind a grocery store.

“You’d have tea at night and someone would say – ‘who wants an icecream?’. Then someone would go out and get a box.”

And then there was ready access to an endless smorgasbord of sweets.

The Read family’s tenure of the store was before the days of the hospital’s cafeteria and Mr Read recalls his father making dozens of sandwiches and filling countless cream buns for nurses to buy during their breaks.

It was also a time when hospitals were well stocked with flowers – usually those grown in the shop’s back yard.

“I remember there were big glass houses out the back and we grew a lot of carnations for the hospital.

“Those glasshouses got smashed during the 1972 snow storm.”

He’s lost track of the store’s history once it was sold to Jim and Pam Hooper but he recalls the shop as a great place to grow up.

The old shop has been closed for several years and yesterday it was demolished.

The site and that of an elderly house next door are owned by a developer and are likely to have a future in residential housing.

A Katikati man accused of molesting a woman in the township has freed on bail on strict terms and warned any breach would see him held in custody. Neh Prashar, 28, who faced a charge of indecent assault of a female aged over 16 when he appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday, is yet to enter a plea to the charge.

Police allege the assault against a woman known to Prashar was committed at a Katikati address about 8am on Monday, after he allegedly tried to force himself on the complainant. Prashar was remanded on bail subject to him reporting to Tauranga South police three days a week, a ban on going to Katikati township and having any contact with the complainant.

Judge Peter Rollo remanded Prashar to next appear in court on August 8.

Discharged A Whangarei woman who assaulted a woman who was pregnant by her husband has been discharged without conviction, with the sentencing judge saying a conviction would far outweigh the gravity of the offending and would rob the community and the education system of a good teacher. Terynne Whitney MillsBarber Dunn, 28, was sentenced in the Whangarei District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to a charge of assault on a woman.

Dunn kicked a pregnant woman twice in the face. The violence erupted when Dunn was talking to Mr Dunn, and the pair was joined by the woman Mr Dunn had made pregnant. Yesterday Judge Duncan Harvey said the violence inflicted on the woman was serious, and while it was a “close thing”, he decided to discharge Dunn without conviction.

Cancer’s cold hard cash

Mid Canterbury teenagers are shivering and shrieking their way through the latest fundraising social media craze, the ice challenge.

The Canterbury West Coast area of the New Zealand Cancer Society estimates about $20,000 has been raised in the region via the challenge, while a range of other charities have also benefited.

Those who participate have usually been nominated by someone else who has just completed the challenge.

It generally involves the nominee standing or sitting in icy water before large quantities of more icy water is tipped over their head.

Those who take part donate $10, while those who decline have to pay $100. The challenge is usually filmed and posted onto the participant’s Facebook page.

Among those who have taken part is 14-year-old Aimee Elliott of Methven, who donated her $10 to Child Cancer. She and her parents scraped the ice off water in the family farm cow trough, before Aimee stood in it while her father Craig

tipped a front end loader bucket full of water over her last Thursday.

Aimee raced home to a hot shower, but not before nominating three others. One of them was Amelia Holmes, 14, who decided to undertake her challenge by leaping into the Rangitata Diversion Race on Friday.

“It was very cold, it was a bit of an adrenaline rush,” Amelia said yesterday.

Cancer Society health promotion and IT services for the region, Martin Witt, said the ice challenge was

“exactly the new kind of fundraising initiative that would appeal to the youngest generation”. He had not been nominated, but would do it if he was.

The society is advising those taking part to dry off quickly, act responsibly and not to drink alcohol.

Some health experts have warned about the risks of sudden exposure of the head and face to cold water, and a Northland man died from a heart attack hours after the challenge and drinking a large quantity of bourbon.

Appalling upbringing blamed The lawyer of a 52-year-old man who appeared in court for sentencing on a myriad of fraud charges, said his offending was linked to his appalling upbringing.

Peter Raymond Everett Jones admitted more than 30 charges predominately relating to credit card fraud, for which he must make reparations of $2900.

Jones was living with at the time. His debt to society will be taken care of by way of 150 hours community work, to be undertaken at the Salvation Army.

Defence lawyer Paul Bradford acknowledged Jones’ history of dishonesty, but said recent events had resulted in him reverting to old addictions.

“He had an appalling background and his offending was

linked to his personal circumstances,” Mr Bradford said.

Given the criminal circumstances he grew up in, Judge Joanna Maze pointed to a comment in the sentencing report, which pondered why Jones’ offending had not started sooner, or been more prolific.

She said prison would likely stir up old behaviours in Jones’ case. “Imprisonment will not change anything for the better,

you have a strong cohort of support for a community-based sentence – the proposal is very sensible,” she said.

In addition to the community work sentence, Jones will be subject to 12 months of intensive supervision, which will include judicial monitoring.

“Every three months I will get a report, you need to know that in a sense I will be there watching,” Judge Maze said.

Prison offer rejected The following people appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court on Monday.

Wati James Te Rehu was offered a 14-day stint in prison to “clean the slate” when he appeared before Judge Joanna Maze last month.He turned down the offer. Ironically, he ended up behind bars in any case; after adding a pile of new charges to the list.

Te Rehu was remanded on bail to a Taumarunui address on charges of threatening behaviour, wilful damage and breaching a community work sentence last month when he appeared on June 10.

He never made it to the North Island, because he was arrested and held in custody following his latest crime spree. On Monday prison officers delivered him back to the Ashburton District Court.

He offered no plea to charges of threatening to kill, unlawfully entering a motor vehicle, burglary, possessing burglary tools, receiving stolen property, possessing cannabis seeds and drug paraphernalia and driving while forbidden.

He was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on August 25.

Nathan Peter Neil Chesmar, 21, of Tinwald, admitted drink driving (EBA 928mcg/l) and careless use of a motor vehicle.

Driver disqualified Samuel David McKenzie, 24, admitted charges of aggravated drink driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 720 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (750mcg/l) and aggravated disqualified driving. The offending occurred in Christchurch on June 24. He was convicted and will be sentenced on September 15.

Drink-driving charge Oliver Rys Luxton, 22, a chef, of Staveley, appeared on charges of drink driving (178 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood).

He was fined $550 and disqualified from driving for six months, and convicted and discharged on a careless use of a motor vehicle charge.

Firearms charges Leroy Lester Grant, 39, was remanded in custody without plea on charges of discharging a firearm in a dwelling house, possessing a firearm, entering a building with a weapon, cultivating cannabis and receiving stolen property. Grant was arrested on Sunday and held in custody pending Monday’s court appearance. He will reappear on August 25.

He was convicted and discharged on the careless use charge but fined $1200, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered not to acquire an interest in a motor vehicle for 12 months on the drink driving matter.

Amy Kate Bright, 37, of Rakaia, was convicted and discharged on an assault charge.

Her husband, Graeme Alan Bright, 38, of Rakaia, also appeared on an assault charge. He was convicted and ordered to make an emotional harm payment of $400 at $40 per week.

The court was told Mrs Bright took offence to a disparaging comment made by the victim and pushed her, causing her to fall over.

Mr Bright then punched the victim’s husband for suggesting Mr Bright should hit Mrs Bright.

Judge Maze acknowledged the efforts both Mr and Mrs Bright had made to “put things right”, attempting to apologise through a restorative justice conference on several occasions but the victims refused to participate.

As a result of the altercations, the Brights lost a fledgling business in Methven and were forced to relocate.

“What began as a relatively low level charge has already cost you dearly,” Judge Maze said.

Court briefs

Tourist causes crash Thaddeus Joseph Baum, a student, of Nebraska, turned into the path of an oncoming motorcyclist, who smashed his collarbone costing him $6000 in lost wages and expenses. Baum, who is booked to return to the US next week, was ordered to pay $300 in reparations immediately, and the remaining $200 within a month.

Careless use Erina Uden, 19, of Netherby, was convicted and disqualified from driving for six months on a charge of careless use of a vehicle causing injury. She must also pay $2230 to EA Networks for the power pole she collided with.

There was mouthwatering pavlova, trifle, fresh fruit salad, jelly sponge and banoffi tarts on the menu.

Forbidden driver Hayden Wayne Luff. 23, of Tinwald, admitted a charge of driving while forbidden. Luff was initially convicted in November last year.

He was convicted and sentenced to 50 hours’ community work, disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Licence suspended Kurt Andrew Strachen, 23, of Hampstead, was convicted on a charge of driving while his licence was suspended. He was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Kylee Marie Holcroft, 38, of Allenton, admitted a charge of assault, and was sentenced to six months’ supervision with special conditions.

An Ashburton teenager is back before the court on a raft of charges relating to vehicle thefts and driving offences.

Tyrone Jayhan Chapman, 19, of Allenton, offered guilty pleas to charges of dishonestly taking a motor vehicle, three of driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police signals, dangerous driving, and breach-

Chapman was disqualified from driving on June 10 and the latest wave of driving offences occurred earlier this month.

The court was told on July 6 he was clocked by police driving a stolen vehicle at speeds up to 140km/h in Christchurch.

He was apprehended after he

lost control of the vehicle and spun out in the Port Hills area.

He told police he wanted to see his ex-partner, and failed to stop “because he didn’t want to be caught”.

On July 12, Chapman and two co-offenders were in Brucefield Avenue when they happened upon an unlocked vehicle. One of the offenders started the ve-

hicle using his own key, drove off and parked it nearby.

They returned to pick it up later, before stealing another vehicle and heading off to Christchurch, where both vehicles were eventually dumped.

Chapman was remanded on bail with a 7pm to 7am curfew, until he returns to court for sentencing on September 15.

James Robert Grant, 31, of Hampstead, admitted assaulting a woman – he was convicted and ordered to pay reparations of $400 within 28 days.

Maori language ‘needs to be used every day’

It’s important to use Maori Language in every day conversations says a Mt Hutt College Maori Language facilitator.

Mt Hutt College’s Jan Pearce was one of many Maori language facilitators at the secondary school.

Her comments to use the language in everyday conversation comes as New Zealand immerses itself into Maori Language Week - the annual celebration of one of New Zealand’s three official languages.

However, Ms Pearce said language should be part of our everyday conversation.

We do not just limit its use to Maori Language Week, Ms Pearce said, of the college.

At Mt Hutt College signage and displays in English and Maori were in many common rooms and walkways year round to promote the “normalisation” of its

use. There were even teachers who promoted the language in their own class space as a way to promote the use of Te Reo among the students.

It also gave them a chance to develop an understanding of the Maori vocabulary.

Ms Pearce said the language was not taught on the school curriculum but a group of students at the college met weekly as part of an informal group.

They met in their own time, at lunchtime, because they wanted to learn the language.

While the nationwide programme runs, the college will continue to run competitions and quizzes.

Ms Pearce said Te kupu o te ra (The word of the day) and phrase of the week in the newsletters would continue.

This week it just happened to be Korero Maori (speak Maori).

Maori Language Week runs from July 21 to July 27.

Key takes aim at Labour candidate

Labour’s Napier candidate Stuart Nash denies being behind an anonymous tirade against Labour leader David Cunliffe for going on a holiday, after Prime Minister John Key pointed the finger at Nash for it in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Cunliffe took a break to go skiing in Queenstown last week and an anonymous Labour source was quoted in the Sunday Star Times criticising him in strong language given the gap in the polls.

Mr Nash has not gone on the party’s list and must win the marginal Napier seat from National to get into Parliament. That is a harder ask when Labour is polling badly and Mr Nash said it would be his last tilt at politics.

Mr Cunliffe said yesterday he believed he knew who it was and was certain it was not a current MP, despite the person being quoted as if they were in caucus.

Asked if the criticism was justified he said that had he known how bad the polls were at the time he would not have gone on holiday, or at least would have taken a shorter break.

Rangitata Labour Electorate Committee (LEC) chairman Glen Cameron said he was “dumbfounded” at criticism levelled at party leader David Cunliffe.

Mr Cameron said party members had

been inspired by both Mr Cunliffe and the policy he released at this month’s Labour Party conference, “and I thought we were getting away from nit-picking”.

“We just want to get on with the real issues and fight for the people of New Zealand, and get away from this petty politics,” Mr Cameron said.

And despite recent polls suggesting Labour is in for a thrashing at the election, Mr Cameron remains confident, mainly due to feedback from Labour’s campaign to talk to potential constituents on their door steps.

The door-knocking campaign hit Mid Canterbury in earnest at the weekend.

“We see door-knocking as a critical part of the campaign,” Mr Cameron said.

“We believe by door knocking and talking to the people, that it’s not as clear-cut as people are saying,” he said.

Rangitata Labour candidate Steve Gibson was similarly supportive of Mr Cunliffe for taking a holiday.

Mr Gibson, based in Timaru, had a beer with Mr Cunliffe as he was on his way back from Queenstown on Friday.

“New Zealanders treasure their time with their children.

“We are spending more and more time at work and less and less quality time with our families, I thought well good on you David,” Mr Gibson said.

I

f you want to measure community potential you should look to the prospects of its youth. Plenty of districts in New Zealand are wringing their hands over youth unemployment.

In Dunedin, manufacturing is shrinking and salvation is a university degree. In Christchurch, the rebuild brings boundless opportunities to gain new skills.

And on the Coast, mining’s decline means people look for opportunity over the hill.

Nationally, youth unemployment is patchy but Mid Canterbury appears to be on a much surer footing. In the quarter to June, 81 per cent of the 18to 24-year-olds in Ashburton District were either in jobs or training. Last year, that proportion was just 70 per cent.

Opportunities have improved.

Despite a wet harvest and the prospect of lower dairy prices, the agricultural engine that drives our economy continues to run well.

When we talk about a slowdown, it’s in growth rather than loss and retrenchment. This is good news for young people focused on the future.

Grow Mid Canterbury reports employers continue to hire young people to help their businesses grow.

Meanwhile, employmentfocused college and tertiary courses continue to attract local students keen to keep working in their province.

The challenge is to maintain the momentum. Before the election, prospective MPs must consider what they want for our youth. Regional variations suggest the best way to improve prospects is to provide subregional solutions.

The primary sector and much of what services it is at the mercy of the fortunes of the New Zealand dollar. Monetary policy could affect youth prospects.

Educators and businesses could make Mid Canterbury the capital of agribusiness training.

Targeted assistance could help this happen.

Youth employment will be middle-aged employment in 20 years’ time. Considered policy will unlock decades of potential.

The lion’s share of funding is provided to organisations to provide services on council’s behalf – what we often refer to as council-funded agencies.

This includes operational expenditure grants to Grow Mid Canterbury ($245,630 to provide economic development services), Experience Mid Canterbury ($386,632 to market our district as a visitor destination), Ashburton Performing Arts Theatre Trust ($263,743 to run the Ashburton Trust Event Centre), Safer Ashburton District ($146,000 to provide a range of social and community services), Ashburton Community Pool ($288,300), Ashburton Art Gallery ($233,341) and the Ashburton Museum ($195,913).

These grants come with performance requirements.

Organisations must report to the council every six months on their activities and achievement of performance measures.

A couple of years ago the council undertook a review of these organisations to ensure the community got the best value for money in terms of the services provided and the way they were structured.

This review led to Experience Mid Canterbury becoming a council-controlled organisation with a council-appointed board and statutory planning and reporting requirements put

in place.

Over the years this council has seen advantages in having services provided by community organisations to ensure a level of wider community input and encourage community ownership of issues.

This is a model that has worked well for the community in the past, but it can’t be assumed it will continue this way forever.

In some cases, it may be that the council is better placed to provide the services itself.

The current debate around the provision of museum services is a good example of this. The museum’s operations may grow in scale and complexity with the new Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre.

The museum board has confirmed it would like to merge and become a department of the council.

This would enable a range of skills and resources within council to be used to ensure the museum continues to deliver quality services to our district.

The council will make a decision on this matter at its meeting on August 7. This type of re-evaluation is aimed at

getting the best possible value for residents.

In addition to council-funded agency grants, the council provides funding assistance to a range of organisations in the district to help them provide services to the community.

These grants are smaller in value and are made as donations, with no reporting requirements.

Included here are grants to Sport Mid Canterbury ($52,000), Methven Pool ($14,350), Tinwald Pool ($15,000), Methven and Rakaia libraries ($11,000), Base Youth Café ($13,000), Hype Youth Health Centre ($7560), and Community House Mid Canterbury ($30,000).

This year, as a result of submissions made to the draft annual plan, the council decided to include new grants to the Ashburton Budget Advisory Service ($4500) and Hakatere Marae Komiti ($7300).

Council also has contestable grant schemes where organisations can apply for one-off grant funding for particular projects.

These are for community projects ($50,000 available),

school holiday programmes ($5000), biodiversity projects ($15,000) and heritage projects.

The council’s approach to grant funding has evolved over many years with many additions and alterations along the way.

The council considers its grant funding each time it prepares a long-term plan, looking at what should be provided and who should provide it.

Over the next six months a new long-term plan will be prepared covering the years 2015-25.

This will be an opportunity for council to again critically evaluate the funding it provides and to test the reasons for providing that funding.

At a time when the Government is calling for councils to focus on core business, but where the Government doesn’t necessarily provide the funding communities believe they need to maintain all the services they want, this will make for an interesting debate and some tough decisions for councillors.

First book delivery day a real eye-opener Today (Monday) was our first day delivering early readers and, it has been an eye-opener.

Our plan today was to visit 10 primary schools. School opening and closing times vary from around 7 to 8am to 1 to 2pm so to ensure we could reach all 10 schools we split into two groups.

The purpose of the week is to deliver all the donated early readers, meet the principal, view

Each school’s facilities varied along with their teacher to student ratio, school programmes etc.

The schools we visited today were incredibly welcoming and grateful of our visit.

Many principals showed us their libraries with pride and we are sure the new books will add to that.

One school had implemented a peace corp volunteer who was full of enthusiasm.

Today has been incredible, being able to experience another culture and see how they operate in schools. I often found myself

making comparisons to home, but in reality you can’t compare as there are so many variables such as climate, cultures and different resource base.

The young Rotarians and myself got such a buzz seeing all the children happy to see us with our donated books.

I have to admit Samoans are up there with the friendliest nationalities I’ve ever meet.

I can’t wait for day two!

■ With wet hands, take a large tablespoonful of mixture and form a meatball, either in the traditional oval shape or in a ball.

Place on tray and repeat until all mixture is used.

■ Brush with a little olive oil then cook for 15–20 minutes until meatballs are golden brown.

■ In a dipping bowl, simply combine all dipping sauce ingredi-

ents until well blended. Season with pepper to taste. Before serving, drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil over the dipping sauce.

More crash probe delays

By Paul OsBOrne Fighting in Ukraine has delayed the transfer of bodies to investigators seeking answers to the MH17 crash and the repatriation of almost 300 dead.

A refrigerated train carrying the remains of Australian and other victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight left a rebel-controlled town in eastern Ukraine bound for the country’s secondbiggest city, Kharkiv, where it will be met by Australian officials.

However, Dutch forensic experts in Kharkiv told AAP the operation would take longer than expected because of fighting.

The BBC reported that proRussian militants were firing mortars and rockets in Donestk and at least one civilian had died in the past six hours.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says when the train arrives in Kharkiv it will allow Operation Bring Them Home to start in earnest.

The bodies will be flown almost immediately to the Netherlands where an international team, including forensic experts from Australia, will identify the dead.

Malaysian investigators also have two black boxes from the flight, which will shed light on cockpit conversations and flight data in the doomed MH17’s final moments.

Up to 39 Australian citizens and residents were among the 298 people killed when MH17 was downed, likely by a missile fired by Russia-backed separatists.

The delay comes despite assurances from Russia of full co-operation and its support for an Australia-authored UN Security Council resolution.

Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre inmates began printing “Correctional Centre Issue” on the outfits in November, a month after the idea was first floated in the media, right-to-information documents obtained by AAP show. Convicted bikies will no longer be required to wear pink overalls or serve time in solitary confinement following a backflip by Premier Campbell Newman this week.

Branson calls for new way Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson has used his address at the international AIDS conference in Melbourne to once again call for an alternative approach to prohibitionist drug laws. Sir Richard, a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, which in a 2011 report concluded that drug prohibition has been an abject failure, said that while some countries have virtually eliminated drug-related HIV transmissions, drug war policies in the US, Russia and certain South East Asian countries are still causing needless infections and AIDS deaths. - AAP

While the UN resolution was a good step forward, there was still a “long, long way to go” before the crash site was properly secured and justice was done.

“After the crime comes the cover-up,” Mr Abbott said.

The prime minister noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had declared in the past 24 hours that everything possible must be done to provide security for international experts at the crash site.

Australian police have been

gathering DNA from the families of victims to help with the identification of bodies when officers arrive in the Netherlands.

Mr Abbott promised that the Australian government would be “erring on the side of generosity” when it came to compensating the families, some of whom he has telephoned personally.

The prime minister was among many dignitaries to sign a condolence book at Parliament House yesterday.

“Twenty-three million Australians share the sad-

ness of those who mourn,” he wrote.

The UN resolution also condemned the attack and extended the international community’s deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who has received credit for the success of the UN resolution, said the families were owed answers.

Australian and Dutch aircraft will be involved in flying the bodies to the Netherlands, which lost almost 200 people on MH17.

Malaysia slammed over Syria fly over

Typhoon Matmo is churning towards Taiwan, picking up strength with thousands of tourists evacuated from outlying islands as weather forecasters warned of possible flash floods and landslides. Matmo, packing gusts of up to 173km/h, is the first tropical storm to hit the island this year and is expected to make landfall on the northeast coast early today, the Central Weather Bureau said. “Over the past three hours its strength has increased and its radius ex-panded,” an official at the bureau said. “From now on until tomorrow, mountainous areas in the north and east are forecast to receive severe rainfall” of up to one metre, he said.

Rebel attack kills 18 An escalation of fighting between the Philippine army and a breakaway Muslim rebel group in the country’s south has killed 18 people in a single day. Seventeen members of the rebel Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and one soldier were slain in the day-long violence on Monday in the strifetorn southern island of Mindanao, Brigadier General Eduardo Pangilinan, the area’s military commander, said on Tuesday. “One of our soldiers was killed during the (initial) attack. The 17 enemies were killed when our troops fired back and during the subsequent encounters.”

One life used up Embattled Malaysia Airlines faced fresh outrage as it confirmed one of its planes flew over war-torn Syria, just days after the MH17 disaster laid bare the risks civilian aircraft face in flying over war zones.

The Malaysian flag carrier confirmed that flight MH4, bound from London for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, re-routed over Syria following the closure of the flight’s usual route

over Ukraine in the wake of the MH17 tragedy three days earlier.

In a statement issued late on Monday, the crisis-hit airline said the Syrian flight path was among routes approved by the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

“As per the notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, the Syrian airspace was not sub-

ject to restrictions. At all times, MH004 was in airspace approved by ICAO,” it said.

But the move drew disbelief and scorn on social media.

“What is wrong with these guys?! Malaysians are now flying over Syria,” said one of many Twitter postings on the issue. “Wanna lose another plane?” asked another.

The International Air Transport Association chief, Tony Ty-

ler, issued a statement yesterday condemning the MH17 attack and defending Malaysia Airlines.

“Governments and air navigation service providers inform airlines about the routes that they can fly and with what restrictions. Airlines comply with that guidance. That was the case with MH17,” Tyler said.

Syria has been convulsed by a bloody civil war since 2011.

Cats are famous for being rescued from trees but a Sydney kitten has been saved after having the ride of its life in the wheel arch of a car.

Firefighters were called to a car park in Sydney’s west on Monday afternoon to rescue a frightened kitten after the driver had heard a strange noise coming from the footwell in his car, Fire & Rescue NSW reports. The man had left work in Rhodes and driven for 25 minutes when he decided to stop and investigate the sound. - AAP

World pushes for Gaza truce UN chief Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry are in Cairo trying to broker a truce between Israel and Hamas after two weeks of fighting which has left more than 570 Palestinians dead.

Many of those killed in the relentless Israeli campaign of shelling and airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, which entered its 15th day, were women and children. On the Israeli side 27 soldiers and two civilians have died.

World powers have urged Hamas to accept an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire and stop raining rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip, demands it has so far resisted.

“Only Hamas now needs to make the decision to spare innocent civilians from this violence,” Kerry said, and UN chief Ban Ki-moon appealed for the violence to “stop now”.

Kerry, who arrived in Cairo to try and intensify truce efforts, pledged $US47 million in humanitarian aid for the battered Gaza Strip.

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi too urged Hamas to accept an Egyptian proposal to end the fighting it had turned down last week. However, US

officials acknowledge that the truce efforts could prove trickier than in the past as Egypt had little leverage with Hamas after the army overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year.

The top US diplomat defended ally Israel’s right to strike against Hamas militants, but voiced concern over the massive civilian violence.

“We are deeply concerned about the consequences of Israel’s appropriate and legitimate effort to defend itself,” he told reporters as he met with the UN chief, urging Hamas to accept the Egyptian-proposed ceasefire.

Ban said Hamas “should immediately stop firing rockets”, adding that while he understood Israel’s military response, “there is a proportionality and ... most of the death toll (has been) Palestinian people”.

Fresh Israeli strikes continued yesterday and Gaza emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra reported the Palestinian death toll since Israel launched its operation on July 8 was now 576.

Stonethrower killed An Israeli has shot dead a Palestinian who was throwing stones at his car north of Jerusalem in the West Bank.

A Palestinian security source named the fatality as Mahmud Shawamreh, 21. He said the incident took place between ArRam and the Hizma checkpoint, and the body was taken to Israel. Asked for comment, a spokeswoman for the Israeli army said: “The incident in which the Palestinian was killed during a violent riot near Ramallah is being investigated by the military police.”

Childcare worker facing sex charges

BY MICHAEL RAMSEY Premier Jay Weatherill says the horrific sex crimes allegedly committed by an Adelaide carer against seven preschool children may be unprecedented in the nation’s history.

A 32-year-old Adelaide man, who was employed by Families SA, has been charged with seven counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with young children under his watch at a residential care facility.

The man, whose name has been suppressed, was also charged with the production, possession and dissemination of child exploitation material after police found more than 100,000 still images and 600 video files.

The premier will order a royal commission into the alleged offences, which he described as “unspeakable acts of evil”.

“The truth is that South Australians should be prepared to learn of horrific details as these matters progress through the courts,” he told reporters yesterday.

“They should also be prepared for the possibility that there will be further victims.”

It is alleged that all seven victims were in the man’s care at the residential facility but the man also cared for children outside school hours.

Mr Weatherill said he was angry and sickened by the alleged offences.

“These were some of our most vulnerable children - children who were taken away from their parents to keep them safe, and yet the people that we entrusted to care for them betrayed that trust,” he said.

“I expect that it will be necessary for there to be a royal commission to investigate this matter.”

The residents of a western Sydney home targeted in a drive-by shooting are “extremely shaken” but unhurt, police say. It’s believed eight people were inside the Guildford home on Station Street when about five shots were fired into a bedroom just before midnight on Monday. Police are searching for a black Mazda hatchback seen leaving the street.

The residents are not known to police and investigators are trying to work out a motive. “As you can imagine they are extremely shaken and it’s very lucky that no one was injured,” Inspector Ian Casher said yesterday.

Monastery seized Jihadist militants have taken over a monastery in northern Iraq, one of the country’s best-known Christian landmarks, and expelled its resident monks, a cleric and residents say. Islamic State (IS) fighters stormed Mar (Saint) Behnam, a 4th century monastery run by the Syriac Catholic church near the predominantly Christian town of Qaraqosh, on Sunday, the sources said. “You have no place here anymore, you have to leave immediately,” a member of the Syriac clergy quoted the Sunni militants as telling the monastery’s residents. He said the monks pleaded to be allowed to save some of the monastery’s relics but the fighters refused and ordered them to leave on foot with nothing but their clothes.

Jail for Twitter user Kuwait’s top court has upheld a 10year jail sentence for a Shiite Twitter user for insulting the Prophet Mohammed, his wife and companions. Hamad al-Naqi, 24, was also charged with insulting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and spreading false news that undermined Kuwait’s image abroad, the verdict said. The court’s ruling is final and can only be commuted by the ruler. He has been in prison since his arrest in March 2012 for posting tweets deemed offensive to the Prophet Mohammed, his companions and Gulf leaders. Naqi, a member of Kuwait’s Shiite minority, denied the accusations, saying his Twitter account was hacked. He was first handed the jail term by the lower court in June 2012. During the past two years, Kuwaiti courts have given jail sentences to several online activists for various charges, mostly insulting the ruler through social networks.

by Mr Anderson.

The explanation given was that other staff did the same thing, and the stain was simply replacement stain Mr Anderson had brought to work from home, which had disappeared.

After two meetings Mr Anderson was summarily dismissed, and he subsequently raised a personal grievance.

The basic facts were not disputed, so the issue for the ERA to determine was whether in these circumstances the employer was justified in dismissing Mr Anderson.

The ERA concluded the argument that the stain was a replacement was not sufficient,

irrespective of the truth of the explanation.

Very clear instructions had been given that permission must be sought before removing any property and Mr Anderson understood those instructions.

He simply chose to ignore them. As such the ERA concluded the dismissal was justified.

In raising this grievance and not being successful, Mr Anderson will now face a costs claim from the employer, as well as being liable for his own costs of being represented for the ERA hearing.

An expensive exercise for the employee, and a factor that needs to be taken into account when considering raising a personal grievance.

Telecom and Chorus are in their first big squabble since they split up, with the phone and internet company complaining to regulators over its former network-arm’s proposed changes to wholesale broadband services.

The Commerce Commission said it is investigating a Telecom complaint that Chorus’ proposed changes could breach the Telecommunications Act. The complaint was contained in a submission from Telecom on Chorus’ proposed new broadband services. These new services – called Boost HD and Boost VDSL – are designed to compete with a regulated unbundled bitstream access service (UBA) which Chorus provides.

UBA is a service allowing internet retailers to provide broadband to customers over Chorus’ copper network without needing to have their own equipment in a telephone exchange. The commission sets the terms of this service and its price.

Cuts to the price, due to come into effect in December, caused a raging brouhaha in the telecommunications industry last year.

Company directors are ultimately responsible for health and safety in the workplaces of the companies they govern.

And on July 30, Ashburton directors will have an opportunity to hear Brent Esler, chief executive of Farmlands Co-operative Society speak on managing and controlling those risks in the workplace.

Good food made easier The latest cookbook offering from Simon Holst and his Kiwi icon mum Dame Alison has been released at a perfect time.

The Searchers coming to town

Mid Cantabrians will be transported back to the 1960s when The Searchers come to town on Friday night.

Billed as one of the most influential Merseybeat groups from Liverpool, second only to the Beatles in terms of fame and popularity, the band will perform at the Ashburton Trust

Event Centre.

Event centre manager Roger Farr said as of yesterday morning about 80 per cent of tickets had sold.

“It may not sell out, but it will go close,” Mr Farr said.

“They normally are quite popular that era, the 60s, the music and the songs … and it’s not a tribute band, it’s the real thing,” he said.

The Searchers will perform some of their greatest hits, including Sweets For My Sweet, Needles And Pins, When You Walk In The Room and Don’t Throw Your Love Away.

The performance will follow another overseas act at the event centre, that of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, all the way from America, on Thursday night.

Mr Farr said ticket sales for the orchestra had been “a bit disappointing”, with “well over half ” the venue sold as of yesterday morning.

“I would have thought it would have sold out,” Mr Farr said.

The $91.90 ticket price was “getting to the top”, but similar to Russian ballets which visited and usually always sold out, he said.

Tainui Kuru victorious in Ashvegas The lights were dimmed and for just a portion of time, as the grand piano was played, I was mentally transported to the Atrium at Christchurch’s Park Royal Hotel.

Last Friday evening, 19-yearold university student Matt Everingham opened the Boy from Vegas concert and enthralled the audience at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre with his superb keyboard skills.

Wine, cheese or a hot chocolate … any of these and a soft armchair almost seemed necessary as a soothing, yet very

expressive rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow drifted towards our ears.

Having completed his introductory item, Matt played the opening bars of You Raise Me Up and, to a hearty welcome home round of applause, our own Tainui Kuru entered the stage and melted our hearts with his charisma and humility.

Tainui had obviously given his programme a great deal of thought, desiring to both impress and please his audience.

This he did, with apparent ease as he sang his way through

different genres. An audition for Nasda in 2009 didn’t go exactly as Tainui had planned … the sudden appearance of an unexpected falsetto as he was singing Empty Chairs and Empty Tables from the musical Les Miserables caused him to believe he would be totally out of contention.

All praise to the person who saw beyond the glitch and made the decision to give this young man a spot in the Nasda team.

Tainui gave us a powerfully emotional rendition of this same song and followed it with the popular Hallelujah and The

Impossible Dream.

It was pure delight to listen to Tainui and Stef Chang (another talented rising star) sing together, with voices that blended well. I particularly enjoyed their duet called Fine. With Matt’s splendidly controlled accompaniment, Tainui and Stef gave a flawless vocal display during this song, taken from the musical Ordinary Days.

Timing and diction was perfect and all three performers deserved credit.

A bracket of songs from Bon Jovi, Michael Buble and Josh

Groban enabled him to demonstrate that he is very capable of singing a wide variety of works spanning many years.

Audience response indicated that The Boy from Vegas had indeed been warmly welcomed home and he wasn’t going to be let away again without giving us just one more song.

Time to Say Goodbye was fitting, but Tainui, please don’t stay away too long before you return to sing for us again and make sure you bring Matt and Stef with you.

In brief Storm wary of Broncos Melbourne don’t know if Brisbane will come out firing or flat after the surprise announcement their NRL coach Anthony Griffin will be replaced next season by former mentor Wayne Bennett.

The Storm take on the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night with both teams looking to secure an NRL finals berth. Storm coach Craig Bellamy admitted he was taken aback by the timing of the announcement, with the Broncos running sixth and Bennett at the helm of Newcastle. “That is probably the most surprising part of it, the timing of the announcement,” Bellamy said.

“You have got to feel for Anthony Griffin, he has done a pretty good job this year.”

I’m still with the Raiders this year and I’m still trying to do a job here,” Milford said yesterday. Sharma repays faith Much-ridiculed paceman Ishant Sharma was the toast of India yesterday after a devastating spell of bowling demolished England at Lord’s, securing his team’s first overseas victory for three years.

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar described Sharma’s career best performance as “exceptional” while newspapers said the 25-year-old had earned the right to be regarded as the spearhead of India’s attack.

The long-haired and lanky Sharma, who has been compared by the English media to an Afghan hound, took 7-for-74 on the final day of the second Test in London as India won their first Test away from home since 2011.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the congratulations for “the wonderful victory” India’s first at the headquarters of cricket in 28 years.

“We are very delighted and proud of the great performance,” Modi said on Twitter.

Speaking to the Indian Express, Tendulkar called it a “remarkable win and a precious day for the entire country” while reserving special praise for Sharma, who was recently dropped from the one-day and Twenty20 sides.

In brief Folau raising his game He’s already at another level, but superstar fullback Israel Folau is hoping to raise his game to impossible new heights in the NSW Waratahs’ do-or-die Super Rugby semi-final against the Brumbies on Saturday night. Folau is the competition’s leading tryscorer and most marked man, but says he’s saving his best for the business end of the season. The code-hopping freak last tasted finals football with the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL back in 2009 and is jumping out of his skin ahead of his return to the sudden-death pressure cooker at Allianz Stadium. “As a player, when I was a young kid, you always wanted to play in those big games,” Folau said yesterday. “You want to give 150 per cent on big games and that’s what I enjoy.”

Sharks’ coach feels the heat

By Wynne Gray This is the time when Super Rugby coaches and their men earn their money.

They have to bring their troops to the required pitch for the playoffs, making sure they have covered all the tactics and preparation needed for a sudden-death playoff without getting the players too hyped.

It is a delicate balance which will gnaw at inexperienced coaches and players if they are not totally convinced about their ideas.

The Crusaders have been through this sudden-death scenario many times, they know the drill, they have a fully fit squad and will reintroduce Richie McCaw on the blindside for Jordan Taufua in the solitary starting change.

That history should get them through any concerns about sitting out last weekend’s matches.

If anything they will convince each other that strong training sessions without a game will give them a cushion of freshness for Saturday’s match.

They are in their home city, going through their normal routines and playing on their home track.

All the changes have come for the Sharks - leaving home, flying halfway around the globe, then trying to get their bodies and mental rhythms into shape by kickoff.

It seems there may be more, too.

Coach Jake White is tempted to alter the side which held on against the Highlanders to win

their quarter-final 31-27 last week in Durban.

He is focusing on his best halfback and five-eighth combination.

It is the 9-10 pairing which has White in a selection whirl.

Does he go against convention and change a winning side, or does he deliver a pragmatic selection that suits the huge challenge of the Crusaders?

The strongest clue that White will reintroduce Patrick Lambie at five-eighth came when he spoke about his final quarter against the Highlanders after being out of rugby for four months with a torn bicep.

“I thought in the last 20 minutes we played really well,” White said.

“It was some of our best rugby of the season during that period, and some of our best

rugby in terms of linking our forwards and backs.

“As a whole, the bench definitely helped us. There’s no doubt that when we get Charl [McLeod] and Pat [Lambie], two senior players, on to the field that their experience tells under pressure.”

White has to work out if he will need that calmness late in the game if the Sharks are trying to close out, whether he swaps players and risks upsetting that balance or will get more impact if he uses Lambie and others from kickoff.

If White does that he needs to know there will still be enough impact when he wants it from the bench.

Andrea Hewitt will start among the leading contenders in the women’s triathlon which kicks off the 20th Games.

But what of the hosts? Their hopes on a memorable start to

their Games rest on the broad shoulders of a son of the city, who also happens to be the fastest 200m breaststroke swimmer on the planet.

Michael Jamieson will have the expectations of his nation weighing on him when he steps onto the blocks at the Tollcross complex, the pool in which he learned to swim.

He is a 25-year-old with a history of seconds: at New Delhi four years ago; at the London Olympics in 2012; and both the world and European short course finals. This is his time and it seems circumstances have conspired to put him in the spotlight.

Is it a coincidence that his premier event’s final is posi-

tioned on the opening night of Games competition?

Then there’s the photo of the man on the cover of the official Games guide, who also happens to be a Glasgow 2014 ambassador.

Indeed, not only is Jamieson aiming to bring the nation to its feet, he wants to do it in world record time.

Fifty years after the Beatles launched a British musical “invasion” of America, English football clubs are playing preseason matches in the US hoping to spark growth for the sport.

Premier League sides Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City will combine to play 16 matches on US soil in a follow on to strong American interest in the World Cup. “Football is growing here, particularly after the World Cup, and every time you come over you see it’s getting bigger,” Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney told the team’s website. “It’s incredible to see the number of fans who turn up to cheer us on. The crowds will be really good.”

Valverde still has hope Veteran Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde has vowed not to give up hope of winning the Tour de France despite Vincenzo Nibali’s commanding lead. Italian Nibali’s dominance, particularly in uphill finishes, has left Valverde second overall at a distant 4min 37sec but locked in a five-way battle for a podium place. Yet Movistar’s Valverde, 34, denied he’s focused purely on maintaining second place.

“Until now he’s shown he’s the best rider in the Tour,” said Valverde. “Now, though, we’re going into the Pyrenees and the third week of the Tour so tiredness can be a factor. He’s a human being and anybody can get tired and have problems. It’s always possible to have a bad day and if he does, we’ll try to capitalise.”

Breakers sign Wesley The Breakers have followed up last week’s news that Cedric Jackson has signed a two year contract to once again play for the club with another player signing, announcing Guam international Tai Wesley to the playing roster for the 2014/15 campaign. Wesley has an interesting background that includes his recent stint with Paul Henare’s Southland Sharks in the Bartercard NBL, during which the power forward impressed with his scoring and rebounding ability, helping the Sharks into the Final Four weekend with 16 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Wesley has a Fijian father and while he comes out of the American system at Utah State, he is not regarded as an import in the ANBL. - NZH

In brief Filly impresses Iffraaj filly Red Robyn earned a favourable comparison to her ill-fated half-brother following her runaway trial win over 850 metres at Te Awamutu yesterday. “We’ve got a lot time for her and she’s got similar qualities to Lion Tamer – she’s quite tough and a very nice type,” said Andrew Forsman, who prepares Red Robyn with Murray Baker. “She’s ready to go straight to the races and we’ll just wait and see how she comes through the trial.” Lion Tamer was prepared by Baker to win the Gr.1 VRC Derby and the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes before he tragically broke a leg during the 2011 Gr.1 Cox Plate and had to be put down.

Innes back at Avondale Leith Innes (right) will make a quiet return to business today at Avondale where both his mounts offer him genuine chances of a winning comeback.

“I was going to wait until Ruakaka on Saturday, but these two came up so I’ve taken a couple of rides to get my eye back in and I’m looking forward to it,” Innes said.

“I know both horses pretty well and they are heavier rides and over the next three weeks I’ll be back riding at 54.5kg.”

Caulfield Cup targeted

Talented three-year-old filly Lucia Valentina will target Melbourne spring features, including the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate.

Now in the care of Newcastle trainer Kris Lees, having started her career in New Zealand with Stephen Marsh, the Savabeel filly will look to open her season in either the Gr.2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm or the Gr.3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Randwick on August 23. “I think I’ll take a similar path as what Chris Waller did with Royal Descent last year through the Turnbull Stakes (2000m),” Lees said. “That will then tell us whether she’s up to that grade.”

Before anyone else gets the chance to correct me, yes I am aware that Ricky May has won seven New Zealand Trotting Cups.

And to those who were quick enough to spot the error in last week’s column and pull me up on it – well done.

How I got to the point of talking myself into believing Ricky had only won six editions, I’ll never know.

I’d estimate that in eight years of being a journalist that I would have written more than 100,000 words on the champion

horseman, and could almost reel off every one of his major wins in the past 10 years.

But for some reason, Mainland Banner slipped through the cracks.

As I counted through the list of winners in my head, I forgot the mare that I had a small association with before she was famous.

It’s good to know though that there is still the odd set of eyes out there scrutinising every word written.

These days it’s too easy to glance through a story on a computer or your phone.

The reason for the column on

M2 Avondale gallops

Ricky May last week though was in regard to his quest to reach 100 winners in a season for the third consecutive year.

And in true May style, he waited until the last minute to unleash his run.

A fruitless night at Forbury Park might have left him feeling a little despondent, but four winners at Addington quickly countered that.

It’s an incredible effort for a horseman to rein home more than 100 winners for three years in a row.

And before Dexter Dunn rocketed onto the scene, such a feat would be praised from

the rooftops.

Now it’s more a simple acknowledgement and a job well done, but the significance of it should be in no way lost.

Joining May in reach milestones this weekend was his good friend, Robert Dunn, who of course was the trainer of Mainland Banner.

Dunn hadn’t trained 100 winners in a season before, but can tick it off the bucket list after a fantastic 12 months.

Also on Friday, another of the major contributors to May’s career – Greg and Nina Hope ticked off their 300th training success.

For almost nine months Ashburton racing trainer Lenny Faber has been living and working under a cloud.

In September a syringe containing the banned substance synthetic Erythropoietin NeoRecormon (EPO) was handed over to members of the Racing Integrity Unit (RIU) during a visit to Faber’s Ashburton stable.

The vial of liquid was unopened and still in its packaging.

Tests revealed it contained the banned substance EPO. Since then an extensive investigation has been carried out, with the source of the banned substance uncovered, and the parties involved in its transfer to Ashburton found.

Judicial Control Authority committee chair Murray McKechnie recently heard the case against three men alleged to have been involved in the EPO scandal and found all three guilty.

While they are now awaiting sentencing, Faber says “the issue is still not over yet…”

He maintains he was not aware the vial contained EPO. He still holds a trainers’ licence and continued training in the months after the EPO find.

“I never really worried because I never used it and never thought about using it; my horses were tested and they all came up clean,” he said.

The inquiry found that the substance had come from retired harness racing trainer Donny McRae who had used EPO to boost his own red blood cell count.

He gave a vial to owner Calvin Fisher who in turn gave it to Faber, believing it might boost the health of a horse the pair raced.

Because he was unsure what the vial contained, Faber said he put it aside and subsequently forgot about it.

Several weeks

later he found it and asked his vet John Beeman what it was.

Beeman alerted the RIU who then called at the Faber stable, swabbing four horses.

Faber was ordered to scratch horses he had racing over the next few days while the RIU investigated.

The four horses all returned negative samples and Faber was cleared to race again.

At the time the EPO find sent alarm bells ringing through the racing industry.

Mike Godber was concerned that investigations would show the EPO find would prove the Ashburton incident was not an isolated case.

It was the first time the banned substance had been found in New Zealand.

If used it would boost red cell production in a horse, enabling it to perform at a higher level.

If administered it would only show in a horse’s blood and urine samples for a few days, but its effects would be much longer lasting.

The investigation allayed fears of wider use, Mr Godber said.

“We’re now very clear that this was opportunistic rather than them going out and looking for the stuff,” he said.

Several years ago EPO abuse was identified in Australia with a trainer losing his licence for three years and the three men involved in the New Zealand incident will face harsh penalties, Mr Godber said.

“Murray McKechnie has said he doesn’t believe it was administered, but the fact that they had it, is about intent.”

It is likely to be several weeks before the penalties are decided.

The racing industry across all three codes, took a hard line on drug use with a high testing regime.

Each year about 14,000 tests were carried out compared to about 1500 on athletes across all sporting codes, he said.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT - RE-REGISTER YOUR DOGS It’s that time of year again when dogs need to be registered and to help make this easier and quicker for dog owners, Council is encouraging re-registrations using its pay it online service.

All dogs over 3 months of age are required to be registered with the Council, including all farm dogs.

Alternatively, you can register your dogs by filling in and returning the registration form mailed to you at the beginning of July or by going into the Council offices.

Please note that if there are changes to your dog’s registration this year e.g. a change of address, you can only pay it in person at the Council offices.

Some plumbing fittings have potential for minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that has been in the fitting for several hours.

A Meeting of the Ashburton Water Management Zone Committee will be held as follows:

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you run a mugful of water through your drinking water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from plumbing fittings.

We recommend this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Centre stage with sporting greats It was a weekend for Bailie Perriton to brush up on his public relation skills at the annual Speedshow in Auckland’s ASB Arena.

After being chosen by public vote to be one of the 20 “Kiwi Young Guns” who would represent the future of NZ motorsport Perriton was on show as the riders and drivers, and their

machinery, took centre stage at the event.

All of the youngsters were interviewed twice over the weekend in front of the big crowds, which included industry representatives, celebrities and the general public.

The New Zealand 250cc production champion spent a lot of time ‘talking shop’ with fans

and potential sponsors One New Zealand icon from another sport was former All Black Josh Kronfeld who was very keen to meet Bailie, and they spent quite some time swapping stories and plenty of laughs.

“I heard someone say I would like to meet Bailie.

“When I turned around and

saw Josh Kronfeld was the voice I couldn’t believe it,” Perriton said.

“He is an avid bike rider and knew all about my racing over in Australia, I was blown away.”

Perriton also had the chance to talk with many of the other young stars of New Zealand motorsport, and hear about

their experiences around the world.

The Ashburton teenager has his own stories from competing across the Tasman in the Australian Superbike FX300 Ninja Cup. He is currently third after three rounds and is back on the bike again next weekend in Victoria.

The Football United tour opened with a bit of a stroll for English Premier League club Newcastle, which beat A-League club Sydney FC 4-0.

tralians a lesson. The extra pace, the silkier touch and the calmer defending were all on show as the English club did its part to create some buzz around the tour.

This was always going to be more about the occasion than the action on the pitch, but

Newcastle started a strong XI and produced some wonderful attacking play.

There was a feeling that it all rather fizzled out, as both sides made multiple changes in the second half and Newcastle sat on an imposing lead.

But the goals - and the goodwill - were in the bank well before halftime. In the space of 14 first-half minutes, Newcastle produced a withering attacking period that shattered Sydney’s confidence and put the result well beyond doubt.
