Two suspicious fires in Ashburton in May have reached different outcomes, with one resulting in a number of juveniles being spoken to by police, while there is a lack of evidence to prosecute in the other case. The two fires occurred in the middle of May, with the Cambridge Street fire taking place on May 16, and the Peter Street fire on May 21. Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said there where a number of juveniles spoken to and requests for other people to be spoken to in other police districts in regards to the Peter Street fire. “The Cambridge Street investigation uncovered a suspect, but there is insufficient evidence to proceed to prosecu-

tion,” he said. Jenkins said police would always be interested to receive any relevant information on the matters. Later that month a crime spree weaved its way through the Ashburton District, beginning with an attempted burglary at the Z Station in Tinwald by an offender in a stolen vehicle, followed by the ramming of a private security firm vehicle. The vehicle then travelled to Mayfield where another burglary was attempted. It was interrupted by police, resulting in the ramming of a police car. The stolen vehicle was next seen in Mt Somers, where it appears to have been set alight. That fire then set a building on fire. The offender was not sighted again until he was spotted by police in another

stolen vehicle near Christchurch International Airport, where he was able to avoid police road spikes. Police followed the vehicle for a short time, however, they abandoned the chase due to the manner of the driving. The vehicle was later found alight in Bryndwr. A third vehicle was later pulled over by police on Gloucester Street and one man was taken into custody on other matters. He is also assisting police with their enquiries into the Mid Canterbury matters. There were no injuries during any of the incidents. Jenkins said the investigations into these matters were ongoing and no further arrests had been made and that police would always be interested in receiving any relevant information.
