Local trucking companies have taken on the challenge of helping to spread the message around the district that drink driving is a bad choice. Ryal Bush, Hilton Haulage, Philip Wareing and Mainfreight trucks that are locally-owned have all taken on-board signage as part of the Community Alcohol Action Project’s summer campaign. The main target of the programme is to reduce drink driving on Mid Canterbury roads and this was the best platform to get the message out, says Ashburton
Community Drug and Health Services (Acads) health promoter Tania Scott. “Billboards were never going to work as they would only be effective on the main road and they would be mostly viewed by through traffic which isn’t our primary target, our target is the rural drivers,” she said. “We did have a suggestion to put them on milk tankers, but they are owned outside of the district and it didn’t seem right. But the uptake that we got from the trucking companies was wonderful and really positive. “Everyone we approached was keen to
be involved.” For a company like Ryal Bush that is built around the mantra of getting everybody home safely at the end of the day, jumping on board with the campaign made sense, said fertiliser dispatch manager Dean Rattray. “At the end of the day we spend a lot of time out on the roads and the safety of our people and public is very important,” he said.
