Quiet start Bringing in the har could lift restrictions By Erin TaskEr

The quietest start to a fire season in Mid Canterbury in recent years could result in an early lifting of fire restrictions. Fire restrictions were put in place across the district just a few days out from Christmas, but regular rain and a lack of typical hot, windy Mid Canterbury days mean the countryside is looking surprisingly lush. Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said rain forecast for next week could result in fire restrictions being lifted, even if just temporarily. “You drive around the district and the roadsides are usually just dried off, but they are green as,” he said. It’s been a remarkable start to 2016 for the district’s firefighters, with not one vegetation fire attended by crews anywhere in the district since December 29. “Even when we had the nor’west gales last week there was nothing, but other than that day we haven’t really had the nor’westers and we’ve been having reasonably regular rainfall, then we got that 50mm earlier this

week,” Mr Geddes said. The need for fire restrictions was currently borderline, so if next week’s forecast rain eventuated, they could well be lifted. “Had we not had the 25 to 30 degree temperatures we’ve had the past three or four days after the wet weather cleared, we probably would have lifted them, but it’s a bit premature with hot days in the forecast,” Mr Geddes said. While fire restrictions were in place a permit was required before lighting a fire, and even the demand for permits had been unusually low, with only 11 processed, Mr Geddes said. Even with a permit, there are rules that must be complied with, including monitoring weather forecasts, having suppression resources on hand, ensuring a fire was completely out, and notifying neighbours. If restrictions are lifted, they could be back in place just as quickly, depending on the weather. Mr Geddes said there was still plenty of summer to come, and harvest was now under way, meaning there was a lot of crop stubble burning to come.

Yesterday’s hot temperatures were just the ticket for Mid Canterbury farmers waiting to get crops were cut before this week’s rain, but had held up well. Two headers started work on the crop as soo with farmers making the most of the fine spell ahead of next week’s forecast rain.

Ashburton might have fallen under the eye of the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) as an area where there are state houses standing empty, but the figures don’t tell the

full story, a Housing New Zealand spokesman says. Communications manager Glen Conway says that while seven of Ashburton’s 186 houses are vacant, only one of those is ready to let and this has already been matched with

a tenant. The other six are not currently tenantable because they are either fire damaged, methamphetamine contaminated or have other significant building issues that make them unsafe for habitation, Mr Conway said.

A property can also remain untenanted if HNZ has decided to put it on the market because it does not meet its current needs. If a property is sold this is done through a first home ownership programme, tenant home ownership programme or

it is put on the general market. Waiting lists for state houses are managed by MSD with applications ranked according to need. The latest available figures to September 30 show 13 people on the waiting list for a home, seven in

‘Lost city’ uncovered at Benmore A piece of Roman Judea has been uncovered in the South Island, with urban explorers releasing new pictures of a spooky, abandoned film site. Urbex Central said its explorers had a fascinating time roaming the “derelict and forgotten film set” built near Lake Benmore for Kingdom Come, a movie that was never made. “The set still stands waiting for its film crew and producers to perhaps one day return,” the explorers wrote on the Urbex website this week. “Exploring this abandoned movie set in the middle of rural New Zealand countryside was quite the experience, as we wandered through the film set which was designed to look more like Je-

rusalem than New Zealand it felt like we were entering some kind of cartoon world.” Urbex said the set was never used because the film was mothballed after running out of funds.

The group said film set designers built the entire complex including walls and floors. Even old props and building materials were left lying around the area, Urbex added. - NZME

Man injured in crash A man aged in his 50s sustained moderate injuries in a car crash at Windwhistle on Thursday. The Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the scene, on High Peak Road, along with an ambulance and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The face of Ashburton Hospital is changing, with work continuing on the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) and theatre building. Work began on the 826sqm site earlier this month when a con-

struction team poured 173 cubic metres of concrete. Originally due to commence late last year, work had to be rescheduled when the arrival of a large piece of reinforcing was delayed. Now that the foundation has

been cured to the point where it can be worked on, framing is being installed. When complete, the new single storey building will house a theatre, a nurses’ station and recovery area. A lift will be installed in the new

Mrs Robinson is currently working at the New England Regional Art Museum in Armidale, New South Wales and has a background of more than 20 years involvement in museum, archives, education and creative industries. She also has experience across arts administration and heritage management, collaborative community events and work with collections and exhibitions. She has worked in Australia for the past

three years but prior to that most of her experience was gained in the Hawke’s Bay where she worked for the Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery. Mrs Robinson will take up her new position on March 21, with Mr Hanrahan likely to retire at the end of that month. council staff A judge has slammed Auckland Council staff after two employees published unprofessional comments on Facebook regarding a prosecution against Miriama Kamo. Building charges against the TV presenter were dropped yesterday at the eleventh hour despite her earlier guilty pleas. She admitted she and her husband were “naive” when making changes to their Waiheke pad between 2009 and 2014. But after speaking with his superiors Auckland Council prosecutor Vernon Tamatea withdrew charges yesterday afternoon. No further explanation was given. But after fining Kamo’s husband 49-year-old Michael Peter John Dreaver $4462, Judge Claire Ryan highlighted an “unfortunate” incident involving the council. She said two staffers posted comments about the court case online. “If you’re in enforcement or inspection you have to know just as public figures can be judged, so too can [council staff],” the judge said. The lack of privacy on social media meant others might question their “objectivity and common sense”. An Auckland Council spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the judge’s comments regarding social media. Council has reminded all staff of its policy to ensure responsible use of social media.” She said the charges against Kamo were dropped because her husband had accepted overall responsibility and provided information to the court which minimised her involvement. Kamo – who hosts TVNZ’s current affairs show Sunday – previously pleaded guilty to three charges under the Building Act in relation to the property where they were married last year. - NZME

Man’s throat cut A man’s throat was cut while he was using a grinder on a Waikato farm yesterday. An ambulance was called to the farm near Arapuni after the 60-year-old man injured himself about 3pm. He was treated at the scene but the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter had to be called in due to the nature of the injury and his location. Ashburton parents keen to prevent their child from contracting chicken pox are opting to vaccinate. The Immunisation Advisory Centre stipulates having the chicken pox vaccine (varicella) will prevent most people from getting chicken pox, and in the small number who do contract the disease symptoms are milder. However, the vaccination is not currently included in the National Immunisation Schedule outlined by the Ministry of Health even though it has been funded for high risk groups since July 2014. For people not in the high risk group, the vaccine can be purchased through GPs for approximately $75 per dose. Ashburton mother Zalie Doyle said she was “very pro immunisation” and always ensured her children received their vaccinations. Mrs Doyle said she knew there was a vaccine available for chicken pox but unfortunately the disease struck before she had a chance to immunise her children. “Not sacrificing some time or

money to get the vaccine meant that in December 2013 all three of my children became infected with chicken pox within days of each other,” she said. “All of them got what would be considered ‘a really good dose’ although I struggled to see anything good about it.” Her three-year-old son Alex had the worst bout of pox, he was confined to the family home for the best part of three weeks dealing with fever, nausea, itching, lack of sleep, secondary skin infections, lethargy and pain. “I regret with all my heart not making those small sacrifices for my children so they could get the vaccine, I would pay one hundred times the cost to take that experience away from them,” she said. Ultimately Mrs Doyle said she would like to see the chicken pox vaccine included in the National Immunisation Schedule so chicken pox could become a thing of the past. Another local parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was absolutely a provaccine mum and vaccinating her children against chicken pox was the best money she had ever

The man for all things medical this year is Dr Mick Tarry, who has taken up the role as GP spokesperson for the third time in his career. Dr Tarry has been a GP in Ashburton for over 20 years, based at the Sealy Street Medical Centre. Prior to his move to Ashburton he was based in the central North Island and before that, Inverness, Scotland. However, he said he likes Ashburton – “it’s a good size, there’s a diverse population [and] good people,” he said. Not to mention the climate, Dr Tarry is a fan of that too. Growing up he always wanted to be a GP and so completed his training at the University of Sheffield Medical School in England. He then worked in Britain for a few years before making the long journey to New Zealand. During his time in Ashburton Dr Tarry has held the title of GP spokesperson a total of three times – back in the late 90s, then again in 2006 and now – 10 years later, after taking over from Dr Charlotte Cox. Doctors in the area take on the role on a rostered basis, holding the post for a year each. While Dr Tarry’s role mostly revolves around dealing with media, he is also tasked with keeping an eye on issues that arise in the area. This year the only issues he sees thus far are around servic-

A 19-year-old Dunedin man has had a charge of manslaughter laid against him for his role in a fatal accident at the intersection of Hope and Stafford streets almost six months ago. Shay Robert Richards, who appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday, faces a total of five charges, the most serious being an allegation he caused the death of Nakita May Strange by an unlawful act, namely the reckless operation of a motor vehicle in Dunedin on July 29 last year. Police did not oppose bail and Judge Kevin Phillips remanded Richards without plea to appear in the High Court on February 9. - NZME

Young boy killed A young boy has died after falling off a bike into the path of a milk tanker at Maungaturoto yesterday. Whangarei police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said the child was cycling on the footpath on Gorge Road, Maungaturoto, about 33km northwest of Wellsford, and fell off the bike into the path of the milk tanker. Initial indications show the boy fell under the wheels of the large truck’s trailer. Police at the scene say the dead boy was 6 years old. While Ashburton’s GP workforce might be aging, the district was lucky it was diverse and had a good balance of male and female doctors. Traditionally, GPs were older males but Ashburton did was doing “a lot better than it was”, he said.

Family rift erupts over Jonah Lomu’s grave A family and cultural rift has emerged over the grave of All Black great Jonah Lomu, with his widow Nadene alleging her mother-in-law had cleared items from his burial site. Nadene Lomu said she went to the grave yesterday, where she met Hepi Lomu, and made the discovery that flowers and other tokens left by the couple’s sons had been removed. Nadene Lomu said the rift cannot get in the way of how Lomu’s sons Brayley and Dhyreille were dealing with losing their dad. “If that’s how she wants Jonah’s grave to be, we can’t even leave anything on there for him.” Asked about a family divide, Nadene Lomu said her and Jonah “kept to ourselves as a family”. “Whatever differences of opinions there are with Jonah’s family ... all differences aside, it is a place of rest. It is a sacred place.” Earlier yesterday, Nadene Lomu posted an anguished social media call for help, in which she asked people to leave Jonah Lomu’s grave alone. Jonah Lomu died two months ago of cardiac arrest after years of chronic kidney illness, just after returning from the Rugby World Cup.

Manslaughter charge

Nadene Lomu said she and their boys had made regular visits to Jonah Lomu’s resting place which the children decorated with flowers and other adornments. But return visits to the grave at the Manukau Memorial Gardens in South Auckland have left the family stunned to find the burial site cleared back to bare earth. Sheep stop fugitives They were on the lamb, and it took a flock of sheep to stop them. Four fugitives who led police on a high-speed chase through Central Otago and Queenstown were arrested after they were brought to a halt by a flock of sheep on the road. Senior Sergeant James Ure, of Dunedin, said police had pursued the car after spotting it driving at speed and without licence plates east of Alexandra just before 8am. Two males, aged 19 and 23, have been charged with reckless driving, failing to stop for flashing lights, three thefts in relation to petrol drive-offs, and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. Tau fly sparks alert A single Tau fly has been found in a trap in the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa. As a result, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has placed controls on the movement of certain fruit and vegetables in a 1.5km radius from where the fly was found. Building pace picks up at Lochlea By Caitlin Porter

Ashburton’s elderly will soon have even more choice when it comes to deciding where to live, with Lochlea Lifestyle Resort’s villas and assisted care apartments being built at a rapid rate. Dubbed a “village of independents” by manager Tony Sands, Lochlea is an aged care facility for people over the age of 60 situated on 6.2 hectares of land adjacent to the Lochlea Estate. When complete, the resort will offer a total of 111 villas of five variations – three two-bedroom plans and two three-bedrooms plans. The first villa was built in 2012 but the total build project is now nearly halfway complete, with only around 60 left to construct. Mr Sands said all were well insulated, fitted with nurse call alarms and an HRV system, and had access to outdoor areas. The cost of the villas ranges between $348,000 and $410,000 for the two bedroom variation and $498,000 to $550,000 for the three bedroom. People who want to live in a villa purchase a licence to occupy which means they can inhabit the villa for the rest of their life, or until they choose to move elsewhere. Currently 36 of the villas are li-

censed to residents. Mr Sands said they are selling so quickly that there is no time to even build a spec villa for people to view. Not only does the village allow independent living, but also an aspect of socialisation. Everyone living at Lochlea has access to the lodge facilities. In its second year, the lodge brings the aspect of community life to the village. It encompasses a lounge/bar, heated pool and spa, activity room, library, gym, hairdressing salon, massage and beauty room, wellbeing room and an area for outside entertainment. Keen sporting types can also play bowls, petanque and croquet or even fine-tune their putting skills. Mr Sands said the lodge helped foster great relationships and also form new relationships between people from all walks of life. However, the villas are not the only thing currently under construction at Lochlea. Work on Mill Stream Hospital is set to be complete by mid-year. Project manager Helen Somers said the complex will contain 40 hospital care beds and 20 dementia care beds. According to data obtained by the Guardian last year, that will bring the total number of hospital

level aged care beds in the district up to 142 and the number of dementia hospital care beds in the district to 32. The district also has 47 demen-

Loan defaulter ‘felt like criminal’ The first person to be arrested in this country over student loan arrears said the experience made it “the worst day of his life”. Ngatokotoru Puna, 40, the nephew of Cook Islands Prime Minister, will be allowed to leave the country again after making a “significant” repayment, a court heard yesterday. Puna ignored requests to repay his student loan and was arrested at the border on Monday while trying to leave the country. He had lived in Rarotonga since 2004. After appearing in Manukau District Court on Monday he was bailed to his in-laws’ house. Yesterday he was given back his passport and is set to return to the Cook Islands today. Before telling him he was free to leave court, Judge Blackie asked him what he had learned from the experience. “I’ve learned I’m the first person to get arrested,” Puna said. “Let’s hope other people know their responsibilities so we don’t see others before the court under similar circumstances,” the judge said. Puna, who works for the country’s education department, had been invited to New Zealand for a conference. He said the IRD’s case was that they had been attempting to call him and send letters but he said that was not the case. He had been given a $40,000 loan while studying a Bachelor of Arts at Auckland University 20 years ago but said interest had seen it balloon to around $130,000. He said that he had had to borrow $5000 from his parents to pay the IRD before it was satisfied he could leave the country. His wife, Diane, told the Herald from the Cook Islands that the IRD sent reminder letters to the wrong address.

Steven Joyce: Loans have obligations She was audibly upset when speaking with the Herald, and said the arrest had come as a huge shock to the family. Puna has lived in the Cook Islands for 13 years, she said. “We never had any contact from IRD about the whole thing,” she said. “They were sending reminders to the wrong address.” He described the day he got arrested as the worst of his life, “if you don’t count deaths”. Puna, who said he came from a family of “high achievers” said he was pulled aside by Customs staff and initially thought it was about his emergency passport, which he had obtained after losing his original passport. “I sat there, ate my three pieces of KFC and the police came and said I was under arrest for my student loan. I looked around; I thought it was some kind of joke.” Puna said he sat in a cold police cell for more than seven hours.

“That’s my first time in a police cell. It was unbelievable,” he said. “I don’t think I’m a criminal.” The father of five daughters said his salary was about $35,000 and his mistake was that he had not contacted IRD when a payrise took him over the repayment threshold five years ago. Though he was committed to making repayments he said he had a $300,000 mortgage to think about. Puna accepted he would owe the IRD money until the day he died. He said outside court the authorities had used him as an example and he did not think his treatment had been fair. “It made me feel like a criminal.” He said his plan was never to rack up a huge debt and then ignore it after graduating but accepted he was in the wrong for not keeping in touch with the IRD. Puna said he wanted to make others aware of their financial responsibilities. “I’m going to try and figure out something so others don’t have to go through what I went through,” he said. A law change in March 2014 means student loan borrowers who are well behind on repayments and ignore requests from Inland Revenue may have an arrest warrant issued, stopping them from leaving New Zealand until they resolve their arrears. Inland Revenue has tracked a small number of overseas-based defaulters but, despite the controversial policy generating headlines, until now no arrest warrant had been issued. Blender dilemma for police How many police officers does it take to undo a Nutri-Bullet blender? That was the dilemma faced by Hawke’s Bay policemen when a woman walked into a station asking for help to undo a stuck blender containing her morning smoothie. In one of the most bizarre jobs encountered this week Hastings police were the first port of call after a woman fastened her small mixer so tightly before blending her drink she couldn’t get it open. But as police operations go, it was far from straightforward. In a detailed post on a Facebook page officers recounted the lengths they went to to get a result. “First one constable, then another, tried to remove the flask from the motor section. Then one held the bottom while another twisted the top, but even this concentration of massed muscle power failed to budge the blender. Eventually one of the duo donned his leather gloves and, with the extra grip, the pair were able to free the smoothie.” They posted it was one of the most unusual jobs they had encountered and were happy the lady could eventually get to enjoy her smoothie. - NZME

Former Ashburtonian Sarah Hart is making waves in the TV industry, currently starring on The Zone’s The Shannara Chronicles. She talks to the Guardian’s Caitlin Porter about life in the fast lane.

Sarah’s new life as stunt double Fighting, being zipped across an invisible wire and tossed from moving vehicles – it’s all just another day in the life of Sarah Hart. The former Ashburtonian is currently working as a stunt double on Sky Channel 009 (The Zone) show, The Shannara Chronicles, airing 8.30pm Wednesdays. A student at NASDA (the National Academy for Singing and Dramatic Art), Sarah packed up and moved to Auckland where she ran an acting agency. A talented actress, the transition into her current rough and ready career was a “right place, right time type moment”. Working on the show as an extras casting assistant, filming had already commenced before she was approached by the stunt department. The show had covered two episodes and the department was having a tricky time finding the perfect double for one of the characters, Etetria, played by Ivana Baquero, Sarah said. After chatting to stunt co-ordinator Paul Shapcott, who is known for his work on Game of Thrones, The Hobbit and Spartacus, she became aware the crew was in need of a female stunt double but had yet to find the perfect fit. “I cheekily joked that I should just probably do it so he gave me a chance to audition. Before you knew it, I was cast as the lead double,” Sarah said. “Becoming a stunt double, let alone

a lead double, is an extremely long and tough road so I really felt like I had won the lotto.” It was a busy time though – not only was she flat out with stunt rehearsals and training but she was also in sole charge of all of the department’s administration work. Sarah said she was fortunate that New Zealand boasted some of the best and most versatile stunt performers in the world which allowed her to receive mentoring from the best in the business. But however cool the stunts might look, safety is always the top priority. “A lot of time is spent preparing and rehearsing the fight choreography, wire gags and other general action,” she said. “Stunt performers really do put their bodies on the line!” A physical job, it certainly doesn’t lack excitement. “How many other people can say they get a huge adrenaline rush every time they do their job?” The hours were tough though, it was six months of 12 to 18-hour days but it meant the cast came to feel like a family, she said. “The show has gained some incredible support so we are very proud and keeping our fingers crossed for a second season.” As for where she would like to see herself in the next five to ten years, Sarah had a simple answer, “The Shannara Chronicles season 10!”

TIME FOR CHANGE Pup Chamberlain has retired from the New Zealand Police after 38 years, but he knows that he’ll be known as Pup the Policeman for a long time to come. Erin Tasker reports.

“W

e’ve got an active shooter. Get in the car.” So Pup Chamberlain and his fellow police education officer Chris Wiltshire did just that, and they were in one of the first cars to arrive on the scene of the shooting tragedy which had unfolded at the Ashburton Work and Income office on September 1, 2014. Pup and Chris had been busy planning their day when the call came in. Their days generally consisted of being the face of the police in schools, but when frontline duty called, they were there. Pup said the scene that greeted them that day was horrific, like many he’d been faced with in his 38-year police career, and it was situations like that which helped him realise it was time to call it a day. So yesterday, he did just that. Yesterday, Pup officially retired from the New Zealand Police. Before joining the police, Pup – whose real name is Paul, but the family nickname Pup he’s had since he was a kid stuck – was a confused country boy from Southland. He left school and got a job in the forestry sector, simply because he didn’t know what he wanted to do, and that’s where the jobs were. It was his dad who suggested he join the police, and 38 years on, Pup does not regret the decision. It hasn’t always been the easiest job; death and harm to kids have always been the hardest to deal with. Even after so long in the job, the 2014 Work and Income shooting which left two people dead, and another injured, was a shock.

“It doesn’t matter how long you are in a job, even when you’re used to drama and bad things, going into a scene like that was still shocking,” Pup said. Pup’s first eight years with the police were spent in Southland, before transferring to Ashburton in 1986. Fifteen minutes before he was due to start his first shift he found himself at a car crash at Chertsey. It was a triple fatality. In fact, in Pup’s first three weeks in Ashburton there were three fatal crashes, resulting in five people dying – two of them died in Pup’s arms. “The boys started calling me Dr Death,” he said. After 14 years in the police, Pup took on the first police education role in Mid Canterbury. He set up the police education programme in the district, and never looked back. “The first year was madness. The schools supported us fully, the community got on board to support us, and it was madness, so much so that after three or four years they allowed Chris to come on board because it had just gotten too big for one person.” Over the years, Pup and Chris have become two of Ashburton’s most recognisable faces, particularly with the younger generation. When they go into schools, they’re like celebrities. The duo reckon their secret to success is longevity. They worked hard to become the trusted brand they are today. “It’s no secret that we have been pretty successful in what we have done and a lot of that is because we chose to share our schools because our opinion was we wanted the kids to identify to more than just one identity.” As a result, anyone who attended school in Mid Canterbury over the past 20 odd years is likely to remember Pup and Chris. “He’s like my brother. We have been workmates successfully for over 20 years and in that time I can’t remember any serious arguments,” Pup said. Chris filled in Pup’s weaknesses and was often a calming influence, and Chris supported Pup in what he wanted to do.

Pup sat a degree, worked at police college training education officers, and became national director of training for DARE To Support Your Kids. Change is inevitable though; some good and some bad. When the police education roles were under threat some years ago, the community rallied and ensured they remained. Later, Pup and Chris’s roles changed and the area they covered widened, with Chris covering as far north as Springfield and Sheffield, and Pup as far south as Twizel. “But that’s just a sign of the times we live in, with budget restraints and things like that. It’s not only frustrating for us, it’s frustrating for our bosses too.” Pup reckons his success has been mainly down to the support he’s had, and he just gets the glory. People like Basil Ivey, who spent countless hours over the years helping at school camps and DARE fun days, were vital to the programme’s

success, he said. “It’s people like that in the community, for want of a better word, that have made me look good,” Pup said. Basil was just one; there were too many to name without forgetting someone, Pup said. He knew yesterday was going to be tough, walking out of the station he’d called home for almost 30 years, and signing off on a 38-year career. But he knew the timing was right. He wanted to finish on a high, and not be the “grumpy old bugger who hung on for too long”. He’s leaving a happy man. “The old ad about better work stories, it’s true, I’ve got hundreds of them. I suspect there will be a book one day,” he said. There’s been countless car chases, he’s hung out of helicopters collecting illegal drugs, but the thing that stands out most in his memory is the 1981 Springboks tour. “For two months I was flown around the country, courtesy of the Air Force. At times I’d be in pitch battles, and other times I’d be dying of boredom. “But that’s probably the biggest event of my career.” Following the Christchurch earthquake, he spent eight 12-hour shifts in the red zone – based in Latimer Sqaure – assisting international rescue crews. “The things that do get you a wee bit as a police officer are definitely death, and harm to children. I get fairly emotional about those things and I’d say that’s one of the reasons why I’m going. Mentally, it’s time for me to move on to other things. But I have no regrets.” He doesn’t have kids of his own, but has met most of the district’s school kids during his career, and his best mate Davey Jones’ family is like his own. He often cooks them tea, and their grandkids are his grandkids. Pup’s a natural with kids, and together with Chris they’ve made learning fun for the district’s kids. Kids often ask them why people call police “pigs”, and why people threaten to kill them. “I tell them ‘we’re the mums and dads’ mums and dads. We are the

ones who tell them off when they are doing something they shouldn’t.’ “There’s very few evil people in society, there are just people who do dumb things.” He’s always been one to focus on the positive, and despite the things he’s been faced with in his job, he’s still able to do that. He’s retiring from the police, but he’ll still be a regular visitor to the station, after taking on a firearms vetting role. “I’ve got a lot of emotions going on. I’m a bit sad – Ashburton station has been my home for 29-and-a-half years, but the good thing is the firearm vetting means I’ll still be in and out, and I’m excited about a new start. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop being Pup the Policeman because so many people in this community met me through schools, and I don’t have a problem with that. I worked hard to get a good reputation and build up trust with my community.” It’s a community he loves, and one he intends to stay in. He’s looking forward to not pulling on the blue uniform every day though, and to more time with a fishing rod in his hands instead of a cellphone.

international kite festival

he International Kite Festival is one of the biggest of more than 2000 festivals celebrated in the state of Gujarat each year and marks the day when winter starts to turn into summer. Kirstin Cook, who is a member of the extended Peter Lynn Kite team, said more than 10,000 spectators came to watch about 40 countries show off their creations on January 10. It was great to be able to bring kites from around the world to the locals of Ahmedabad, she said. “Kite flying is a big part of their culture.” New Zealand invited two representatives, both from Peter Lynn Kites, to participate in the event with a 30-metre red stingray kite. The festival was a great display of culture from the locals in Ahmedabad, with an international flavour, and the only downside was the lack of wind which meant the kites had to be towed along, rather than flown, she said. The annual event started with an opening ceremony with dancing, speeches and a group of 7500 children dressed in white participating in yoga. About 100 representatives from the invited countries also spent time visiting other festivals in the region. With Peter Lynn Kites being a forerunner in the kite world, they were not newcomers to kite festivals, she said. Peter Lynn himself had been to more than 500 since the 1970s and regularly attended the one in Ahmedabad. They also hold a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest kite.

eter Lynn and his wife Elwyn established Peter Lynn Kites in Ashburton in 1973 producing single-line kites for children. In 1984 Mr Lynn started creating large themed display kites for festivals. In 1987 the company started developing power kites and designing boats, buggies, boards and snow sleds to use with them. The popular sport kite buggying developed from a kite sailing craft he created. In 1995 he designed a 635 sq m kite – the Megabite, which was accepted into the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest kite in 1997. This was surpassed by his 1019 sq m Kuwait flag kite in 2005.

Putin ‘probably’ okayed killing of ex-KGB agent Almost a decade after former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko lay dying in a London hospital bed, a British judge has concluded who poisoned him: two Russian men, acting at the behest of Russia’s security services, probably with approval from President Vladimir Putin. That finding prompted sharp exchanges yesterday between London and Moscow, and a diplomatic dilemma for both countries. With Russia and the West inching closer together after years of strain, neither side wants a new feud — even over a state-sanctioned murder on British soil. Judge Robert Owen, who led the public inquiry into the killing, said he was certain that two Russians with links to the security services had given Litvinenko green tea containing a fatal dose of radioactive polonium-210 during a meeting at a London hotel. He said there was a “strong probability” that Russia’s FSB, the successor to the Soviet Union’s KGB spy agency, directed the killing and that the operation was “probably approved” by Putin, then as now the president of Russia. Before he died, Litvinenko accused Putin of ordering his killing, but Owen’s report is the first public official state-

School fears stoked When Islamic militants stormed the university campus in Charsadda, chemistry professor Hamid Hussain was carrying a concealed pistol. Locking his students in his classroom he opened fire on the assailants, buying his pupils enough time to escape before he was gunned down. Hussain was praised as a hero for his quick action. His students managed to get away as he single-handedly took on the militants during the assault that killed 19 students and another professor and wounded 22. Hussain was shot twice, once in the head and once in the chest, just above his heart. His brother, Ashfaq Hussain, noticed a cut on his elder sibling’s right hand – an injury, he suggested, that could have been caused when he tried to reload his 9mm pistol and a sign of his limited training. Sam Smith ridiculed Sam Smith has responded to the criticism he received after witnessing a shocking incident of racial abuse. The singer took to Twitter to share the incident which left him startled, writing, “Just experienced my friend getting verbally abused racially in London. Attack widely condemned A deadly Taliban attack on a bus carrying employees of Afghanistan’s biggest TV station drew widespread condemnation yesterday, with activists denouncing it as an attack on freedom of speech and the country’s young and fragile media sector. A suicide bomber struck the minibus with workers from Tolo TV, owned by the private Moby Group, the country’s biggest media organisation. At least seven people were killed and 25 were wounded in the

explosion. The bus was hit as it was passing near the Russian Embassy, which triggered initial speculation that the mission was the target. But the Taliban quickly claimed responsibility and said they had specifically targeted Tolo TV, calling it a “spy agency” and saying they had made good on earlier threats to attack the station. Statements said the station’s vehicles had been under surveillance for some time. - AP

Animal passes away Tributes flooded in from all across the world following the death of Animal, the legendary drummer with rock outfit Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem. Fans of the supergroup were shocked to learn of the passing of the iconic percussionist, who passed away at just 66 following a short illness. Ashburton Golf Club will host its sixth Property Brokers Shootout Final tomorrow morning.

Nineteen players have qualified for the final following five games played over the Christmas break, and they will now battle it out for a year’s free club membership.

y the time I arrived at 8am yesterday morning, Veronica Wall had already finished her daily training session in the tranquil surroundings of Lake Hood. Wall had been on the water since 5.30am, honing the skills that pushed her to gold medals in the women’s open single sculls and club single sculls at the Canterbury Championships a week earlier. Being among the medals is nothing new for the Ashburton College student, but her performance last weekend sent a clear message to New Zealand’s other young female scullers. In the open single sculls, Wall posted a time of 8.30.79, more than five seconds ahead of three Rowing Performance Centre scullers and current New Zealand age-group representatives, a feat made more impressive by having only turned 16 on January 4. Wall’s approach to a sport that demands so much is wise beyond her years, and is even a little too

modest when asked about her achievements so far. “I was surprised to say the least. “I didn’t really expect to get where I was, I was really happy with the results,” she said. “But there’s still improvements that I can make, getting faster

“And I really like the people around it (rowing), I’ve made lots of friends, so that helps.” The under-16 national single sculls champion has aspirations of one day making Rowing New Zealand’s Summer Squad, but is well aware of the journey and

Justin, who is the president of the Ashburton Rowing Club, was also out of bed at 5am yesterday, to drive his daughter to the lake and assist her tough training schedule. “The feature of rowing is that it’s technically demanding. “It’s a combination of fitness and strength and being able to perfect the rowing motion,” said Justin. “Everyone who rows is always looking for the perfect stroke, and once they’ve found the perfect stroke, you’re looking for 240 of them.” With South Island and Secondary Schools’ Championships on the horizon, followed by the Maadi Cup in April, Veronica has a busy schedule ahead, but the teenager has a relaxed approach to the early rises and upcoming regattas. “I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing,” she said.

Nicholls helps Thunder to final A dashing unbeaten century by Usman Khawaja piloted Sydney Thunder to an emphatic eightwicket victory against Adelaide Strikers in Thursday night’s Big Bash League semi-final. Khawaja cracked 104 from only 59 balls and was ably supported by Black Caps batsman Henry Nicholls’ unbeaten 35 as the Thunder reached their 160-run target with 14 balls to spare at Adelaide Oval. Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum is close to overcoming his back injury and could rejoin the squad by the end of January. Coach Mike Hesson says McCullum’s recovery has been progressing well and expects the batsman to return to camp ahead of New Zealand’s third and final one day international against Pakistan on January 31. Ashburton’s John Snowden has confirmed that he will trial for the 2018 Commonwealth Games team following solid performances in Wellington and at the World Championships last August. Snowden kicked off the week by adding the Wellington Rifle Association Championships title to his honours list on January 10. The 47-year-old did not let the blustery conditions affect his aim to edge out Masterton’s Rick Fincham. Snowden said he made the most of a slight gap in the wind. “All day it was tricky winds, the

first three ranges I had to work quite hard for the scores I got,” he said. “But the last range, there was just a lull in the wind, so I got a lucky break, but you’ve got to take advantage of it.” Next up was the prestigious Masefield Championships, and Snowden was in fine form throughout, before his final two shots allowed Australian Rob Sandlant to take the title at the death. “It was good until the last two shots. “I didn’t handle the conditions very well,” said Snowden. “It was hard to read, maybe if

I’d shot a bit quicker, but I didn’t make a very good job of it.” Following his second placing in the Masefield Championships, Snowden qualified for the final 18 of the Ballinger Belt, which he won in 2013, but could only muster an eighth place finish this year. Snowden said he was pleased with his week’s work, despite some issues with his vision. “I’ve got a bit of work to do to get the technical things right. “There’s a few little tricks I can have a play with, different combinations of lenses and things,” he said. The 2010 Commonwealth

Games gold medallist said his recent performances, along with his 14th place finish at the World Championships held in Ohio last August, have reaffirmed his ambitions of selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games across the Tasman. “I was very consistent right through the week,” he said. “And because the World Championships was all long range shooting, and three days of it, against the best in the world, I came home from there thinking I have still got it,” he said. The Commonwealth Games selection process will begin in September.

Breakers crash to a new low in NBL The New Zealand Breakers’ slump has reached its lowest point. An 89-66 thrashing at the hands of the seventh-placed Townsville Crocodiles has made it five losses on the trot for the defending champions, with their playoff hopes in further strife after an emphatic thumping. The Breakers announced midweek that assistant coach Paul Henare will be handed the coaching reins next season, but head

coach Dean Vickerman’s quest to finish his stint in charge on a high note is in serious trouble after a limp display. The last time the Breakers suffered five straight defeats was the 2008-2009 season, and Thursday night’s loss saw the four-time champions fall to 11-11 on the season, good for only fifth spot on the ladder. The team in fourth place - the 12-9 Adelaide 36ers, are trending

in the opposite direction, having won five in a row and putting pressure on the Breakers to find their form, quickly. While recent losses to the dominant Illawarra Hawks were understandable, the Breakers were never in the contest against a Crocodiles side which came into the game with a lowly 7-15 record. Offence has been the problem for the Breakers over their slide, especially on the road, scoring

only 69 points against Hawks, and just 66 against the Cairns Taipans. The worst free throw shooting team since the Canberra Cannons in 2001, the Breakers also could only manage a 66 per cent success rate from the stripe in a woeful offensive outing. Kevin Durant scored 26 points to help Oklahoma City beat Charlotte 109-95 for their sixth straight NBL win yesterday. Russell Westbrook collected 16 points, 15 assists, eight rebounds and five steals in 27 minutes before sitting out the fourth quarter because the Thunder were in control. Steven Adams had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunder, who have won 21 of their past 25 games. Kevin Love had 17 points and 18 rebounds, and the Cleveland Cavaliers bounced back from their embarrassing performance against Golden State with a 91-78 victory over the Brooklyn Nets yesterday. LeBron James also had 17 points and neither forward played in the fourth quarter, a welcome rest with a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers today. More importantly for the Cavs, it was a welcome performance after they were crushed 132-98 on Monday in the NBA Finals rematch. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Marcus Morris each scored 22 points and Detroit beat Houston 123-114 despite Andre Drummond setting an NBA record by missing 23 free throws. Drummond set a career high and franchise record by attempting 36 free throws on a night he was intentionally fouled 21 times. The previous record for most misses was 22, set by Wilt Chamberlain on December 1, 1967. The Hack-A-Shaq tactic allowed the Rockets to take the lead in the third quarter when they did it 12 straight times, but it didn’t help them close the gap in the fourth when Drummond went out for good with 5 1/2 minutes left after seven hacks in the quarter and Detroit leading 107-94. James Harden had his first triple-double of the season and seventh of his career with 33 points, a career-high 17 rebounds and 14 assists in the loss. Drummond finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Stephen Curry scored 25 points, and Golden State made it look easy again in beating Chicago 125-94. Curry tied a season high with 11 assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Klay Thompson added 20 points. Harrison Barnes scored 19, and the defending champions simply outclassed Chicago after embarrassing LeBron James and the Cavaliers in Cleveland on Monday night. Sharapova dodges a bullet By Jason Phelan Fifth seed Maria Sharapova has progressed to the fourth round of the Australian Open with a hardfought win over American Lauren Davis yesterday. Sharapova dominated the first set but then had to see off a stern challenge from Davis, currently ranked No.103 in the world, before prevailing 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-0 on Rod Laver Arena. The five-time grand slam champion lost just two points on her serve in the first set while breaking Davis twice, but her touch deserted her in the second as the American warmed to her task.

“I was up a break and I just let up,” Sharapova said. “When you’re in a grand slam in a third round against a player you haven’t played before, who is fired up and is not just going to give you the match ... it’s exactly what happened. “I’m quite happy that I was able to step up in that third set - that was very important.” A 27-shot rally was the highlight of the tense tiebreak but that was the end of Davis’ challenge. Sharapova got back into a groove with her service game in the third set and put the pressure back on her opponent’s serve, which was broken three times on

her way to a bagel. The Russian right-hander’s 600th career win set up a meeting with 12th seed Belinda Bencic after the Swiss teen scored a 4-6 6-2 6-4 win over Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko. Appearing in her third Open, Bencic struggled early to find her rhythm on Rod Laver Arena yesterday. But she regrouped to become the first player through to the fourth round in the women’s draw, a career-best for her at Melbourne Park. “Definitely today it was a hard piece of work for me,” Bencic said. “What I did in the first set wasn’t enough, so I knew I had to play

much better in the second and third sets. “I still tried to believe even though it wasn’t perfect in the first set.” It was the first women’s match to go to three sets on Rod Laver Arena at this Open, with Bencic converting her third match point in just under two hours. Retiring great Lleyton Hewitt lost his match and his cool on Thursday night in a straightsets defeat that ended his singles career. His competitive nature got the better of him late in the 6-2 6-4 6-4 loss to Spanish eighth-seed David Ferrer. As the match slipped from his grasp in the third set, Hewitt unleashed a toxic spray towards officials. A series of foot faults left the retiring Australian fuming and seeking to have a linesman withdrawn. Hewitt asked the chair umpire to get rid of the “moron” linesman, after calling him a “f***ing cheat” following a series of foot-fault calls against the former world No.1. In a heated confrontation at a change of ends, Hewitt unloaded on the chair umpire Pascal Maria. “You’re a friggin’ idiot,” he steamed. “That’s why everyone in the locker room thinks you’re so full of yourself.” Maria, a 42-year-old Frenchman, is a long-serving official who has umpired several grand slam finals. Hewitt was more conciliatory when asked about the clash in his post-match press conference. “(It came) obviously at a frustrating time,” he said. “Being able to get myself back in that third set, it wasn’t the best time. “But it wouldn’t have made a lot of difference to the match at all.” Hewitt regained his composure to shake hands with Maria after the match. - AAP

Nishikori through to Aussie Open last 16 By Ben McKay Kei Nishikori and David Goffin are the first men into the last 16 of the Australian Open. The Japanese No.1 triumphed over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and a wrist injury yesterday afternoon to enter the fourth round. His 7-5 2-6 6-3 6-4 win in two hours and 48 minutes was not without drama. After edging a tight first set, Nishikori needed a medical time-out to treat his wrist. Sporting a bandage underneath his bright orange wristband when he returned for a second set, the

popular figure’s play diminished. The 26th-seeded Spaniard was able to overpower Nishikori to claim the set, letting out a big ‘si’ as he levelled the match. Nishikori was rattled by Garcia-Lopez’s power game, giving a thumbs up to his opponent as he unleashed a huge backhand winner early in the third set. But he wasn’t to be outdone. Upping his consistency, Nishikori re-applied himself to the contest to claim the final two sets. He said his wrist responded to treatment, and he didn’t feel the ailment after the first set. “It was tough mentally,” he said.

“He was serving really well and I couldn’t return well. “I started to concentrate again ... lucky I didn’t go five sets, for my body it’s great.” Goffin claimed a 6-1 3-6 7-6 (72) 7-5 win over precociously talented world No.20 Dominic Thiem in two hours and 58 minutes. The Belgian ace was on top of his Austrian opponent early, racing through the opening set. Thiem then claimed the ascendancy, racing to a 3-0 lead in the second set. A key moment then arrived, with Goffin claiming a marathon game after eight deuces.

Thiem fumed but didn’t lose his sportsmanship, conceding a point he was entitled to replay after Goffin correctly challenged a call. The Austrian was off the boil and dumped three games in quick time but regathered his composure to level the set-count. Thiem missed his mark in a third-set tiebreak and had to save a match point at 3-5 in the fourth set. He broke back to raise hopes of a deciding set but was defeated shortly after. Insults cost $32,000 Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri has been suspended for two Italian Cup games and fined 20,000 euros ($NZ32,000) for insulting Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini. The two coaches had a confrontation in the closing minutes of a quarter-final that Inter won 2-0, eliminating Napoli. Sarri will serve the ban next season. Tennis gets a turn under the microscope T he Australian Open welcomed in the new year with all its usual fanfare in 2016; unfortunately it also welcomed the very unwelcome spectre of match fixing, in one of the sports which has always prided itself on the highest of principles. Tennis has joined the usual suspects of boxing, cycling, cricket, football and last year’s big latecomer athletics, and is now right in the spotlight as the finger of suspicion is pointed in all directions. The scale of what we’re talking about is gigantic, much bigger than most folks realise. Novak Djokovic says his team rejected a $310,000 ‘contribution’ to deliberately lose a game a couple of years ago. That means a bookie already had a mark set up for the sting, and the bet was so enormous that they could afford to write off $310,000 as expenses to complete that bet. So many questions arise; how many punters out there are throwing around half a million dollar bets on minor games? How did they explain to this

particular mug that the bet was no longer available, even though the game was right there live on the telly? How many of those mugs with apparently bottomless pockets are still filling the bookies’ coffers placing bets that simply cannot win? How can those bookies openly operate in the public arena without anyone noticing and blowing the whistle? The answer to the last one is unfortunately very obvious; vast numbers of people at all levels of sport know about, and have known about such things for many years, but it’s either in the too hard basket, or worse, the ‘other’ basket. Administrators and competitions in every other sport must breathe at least a small sigh of relief when the next ‘bad’ sport hits the public eye, and takes the brightest illumination off them. People have already forgotten that NRL debacle five years ago when Ryan Tandy did his clumsy best to effect a penalty as the first scoring option, when his mates

had bet heavily on that happening. His efforts came to nought (except court appearances for lots of people) as someone took a quick tap instead of the kick for goal and scored a try. That’s just one of many examples of cases that were exposed - how many more went under the radar? I suspect the number would be in the realms of un-countable. Horse racing is another interesting area. A few nights ago I heard an Aussie commentator frantically telling all and sundry that the TV folks had got it wrong and he wasn’t tipping number four in some obscure race over there; in fact he’d been talking to the

trainer and number four ‘wasn’t up to this lot, he’s just out there for a run’. Isn’t that some information that Joe Punter might have liked to have known a bit earlier? Or is Joe Punter right at the bottom of the food chain, and of no importance in the big scheme of things? I rather thought Joe Punter WAS quite important, but I clearly have that one all wrong. So, does all that sort of stuff count as fixing? And what’s the solution? Well, there actually isn’t one, not as long as there’s people out there who want to make a quick buck by piggybacking on the activities of others - and that’s not going to change, ever. As the TAB motto says, it’s more exciting if you’ve got something on it, and that’s quite true. It just means that some people take it to excess, betting telephone number sums, and suddenly the game is ripe for all and sundry to jump in and scoop off something for themselves, by fair means, or in most cases foul.

He keeps getting painful reminders of the heartbreaking end to his NRL career, but recently retired Justin Hodges has already moved on to the next phase of his rugby league life. Missing: 15,000 real estate operators

Statistics NZ said the spike was primarily due to a dramatic increase – from 5000 to 15,000 – in the number of real estate operators ceasing operations between 2014 and 2015. Statistics NZ manager ‘Ofa Ketuu said the 2015 figures may be the result of lags due to the late filing of annual tax returns. “This can result in fluctuations in the enterprise deaths series for this group, particularly for more recent years,” she said. French equities did not recover as much as others in October, partly due to the terrorist attacks, while Hong Kong was impacted by Chinese concerns. The United Kingdom’s poor performance was largely a reflection of the weak Great British Pound.

Australian and NZ Equity Markets Australian equities performed better than most, but weaker commodities meant the weaker Australian Dollar impacted returns from a NZD perspective. Banks recovered strongly over the quarter with capital requirements now in hand and the banks undertaking ‘out of cycle’ interest rate rises to recover their profitability. Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) keeping core equity capital requirements at 8 per cent of “risk weighted assets” also helped calm fears another round of capital raising could occur. Consumer discretionary companies also performed well. New Zealand equities were the strongest performer over the

quarter. Companies with growth attributes outperformed those with yield attributes. The healthcare and technology sectors provided the best of the returns.

Fixed Interest Market Short-term interest rates were slightly lower over the quarter following another cut in the New Zealand Official Cash Rate. The Reserve Bank commentary suggested that further cuts were unlikely, but with the NZD/USD “unhelpful” prior to the statement (and even more so now), another move lower cannot be ruled out. In contrast, longer-term interest rates moved higher. In addition corporate bond rates were impacted by the interest rate gap between corporate and wholesale bond rates widening. New Zealand spreads had been lagging international trends, but with the recent increase in issuance, investors have been able to be more discerning, influencing the yields on offer. Equity returns in local currencies were positive over the quarter, driven by the recovery in October. Equities had been weak over July and August because of concerns surrounding China, but then recovered all these losses during October. Equities marked time during November and were weaker in December as they responded to further weakness in commodity prices and digested various Central Bank policy decisions. In New Zealand Dollar (NZD) terms, equities delivered strong returns over the year. However, a strengthening NZD in the last quarter meant global equities declined slightly during this period. Reviewing the individual equity markets we monitor, German, Japanese and United States equities were the best of the major international markets and managed small gains over the quarter. Japanese equities benefited from the Bank of Japan Governor announcing a new stock-buying plan. United States equity gains appear more sustainable and were driven by better United States data, with housing starts and personal income increases both surprising positively. The Michigan Sentiment report in December also exceeded expectations. The weakest quarterly performers were the United Kingdom, France and Hong Kong.

he Ashburton District Council has said no, Christchurch City is saying a cautious yes; who’s right? Under debate is the use of the herbicide glyphosate, the most common weedkiller and an essential ingredient in the weed control toolkit of most local authorities. It’s relatively cheap and it’s hyper effective. But cost and effectiveness should not over-ride the need for the chemical to be safe, the Green Party is saying. It’s produced research it says shows glyphosate has the potential to cause cancer and therefore its use should be banned in public places such as parks, playgrounds and sports fields. If there’s any element of risk then it should not be used but the big users say the risk is negligible if at all. They say the sprays in which it is used dissolve immediately they hit the ground and that on a leaf that spray is harmless the moment it dries. Ashburton has made its position clear. It uses sprays containing glyphosate, it puts up signs in areas that have recently been sprayed and until another cost effective option is available it will continue with its current spray programme. Christchurch City, however, is signalling it might look at reducing its use of the chemical in parks and playgrounds. Somewhere between a full-on spray regime and the laborious but cheap method of weed control, hand pulling, there has to be a happy middle ground. Research shows the risk for the user who sprays a home drive is nil, it appears to be more about the accumulative effects for spray operators. Those are the professionals, they know the risks and they use protective clothing and masks. We have a natural expectation that we should not be unwittingly exposed to toxic chemicals – of any kind but somewhere between a ban and wholesale, unregulated use of glyphosate, there has to be an answer. This could be as simple as making it compulsory for a council to close off a public space for a set number of days once a spray has been used. Bowing to Greens and banning the chemical might remove an almost negligible risk and finding an alternative would just add another layer of costs to rates.

o let’s get this straight; in an anonymous survey of 24 (only 24??) NBA players and coaching staff, seven claimed that Steven Adams was a dirty player. Adams is not a dirty player. He’s tough and uncompromising but he’s exactly what the Oklahoma City Thunder want him to be. The NBA has grown as a league and subsequently the tolerance for dirty play or outright violence is considerably less than it was 20 to 30 years ago. Clotheslines, punches, jabs, tackling players – these were common occurrences. What Adams does do as an unheralded starting centre is not compromise for position in the key for rebounding or bodying up on defence and that’s where umbrage is taken. He’s had the Memphis Grizzlies’ Zach Randolph retaliate and Vince Carter too for locking them up on defence. His reputation preceded

The attention he gained from the LA Times story takes away from what he’s become very good at and that’s getting better offensively, very quickly. He was always going to have the size, the athleticism and hands to get to the NBA but his ability to learn and work towards a career is what has given Adams the opportunity to succeed. He told the Oklahoman’s Anthony Slater recently that he wanted to “punch myself in the face” because he was missing easy shots by not going hard enough to the hoop. Now he’s trying to dunk everything and that has opened up opportuni-

ties with point guard Russell Westbrook for alley-oop plays and being a threat where once he was there only for defence while the stars in Westbrook and Kevin Durant did their otherworldly things. If making the lob pass on a roll to the hoop has become a new little wrinkle in the Thunder offence by first year head coach Billy Donovan then it’s Adams’ ability to defend that very play that is his bread and butter. Defensively he’s also a lot better than backup centre Enes Kanter who many thought would be starting the Thunder’s NBA season because of his rebounding rate and ability to score. But his lack of defensive footwork and physicality in that area means he’s much better off the bench, splitting minutes with Adams and providing scoring for

the Thunder second unit. Adams’ numbers won’t jump out at you but he is improving and he’s certainly not dirty. It’s a label that will stick and considering his teammate Serge Ibaka is also on the Times’ list at number five it is not evident that there’s a dirty team in the mid-west of America. Instead it was simply a list from peers who probably held grievances. The best quote about Adams’ play has come from veteran centre, and a player who Adams could easily become, Phoenix Suns’ Tyson Chandler, who ended up tangling with the Kiwi who received a technical foul. “Nah, I love him man. We get into it every time, but I honestly love the way he plays. He’s not necessarily dirty, he just plays hard as s***. You’ve got to respect that.”

adybank Learning School of Music is based in Ashburton. The school has four teachers teaching guitar (rhythm, bass or lead), piano, keyboard, ukulele, singing, drums, and music theory. The director, Barbara Thomas, a qualified Music and Primary School Teacher, has created a unique and successful programme for teaching guitar and keyboard using graded books drawn from her knowledge as a Reading Recovery Teacher and her extensive musical knowledge. These form the basic curriculum of the school. Over the years Ladybank Learning has produced many award-winning singers who have produced CDs and have taken their place as some of the best young singers and performers in the country. In the past many students have formed bands of their own – moved on to the Christchurch Jazz school, studied with NASDA or have gone on to attain degrees in music. Tutors from Ladybank Learning take classes in some of the schools in the area where the children are able to come out of class for their lessons and our after-school sessions are highly sought after. Ladybank Learning is about having fun with music as well as stressing the importance of solid musical foundations and knowledge. Students are able to access computers with song writing and recording

software and to record themselves or have recordings made of their work. We have four different studios – students and tutors all busy working and making music. Visitors are most welcome to come and see the students working and to find out information about enrolling in Ladybank lessons.
