$20m Ashburton College rebuild on the horizon

A $20 million-plus rebuild is on the cards for Ashburton College, due to an ageing campus and skyrocketing roll.

The school and Ministry of Education could incorporate the neighbouring former community pool site to form a newly expanded campus.

Four classroom blocks comprise

the majority of the school. They were built in the 1960s and do not meet modern learning environment expectations.

At the same time the school has some leaky buildings.

Its roll is rapidly increasing due to growth in Mid Canterbury, including increasing numbers entering from surrounding primary schools. The roll is now about 1220, and expected to reach 1600

within 10 years. Principal Ross Preece said the ministry had acknowledged the necessity of developing the school site, and now the school was waiting to hear back on how it planned to address it.

“So we are waiting to hear,” he said. “It’s very dependent on funding being available.”

The availability of building funds was dependent on demand from other school sites.

Others taking priority could include the likes of Kaikoura which had lost its gym in last year’s earthquake.

The ministry could demolish and replace one block at a time, and it would be up to the school and the ministry to agree on a design.

The four blocks were state-ofthe-art in their day, but are now ageing with a wide range of issues.

These include protruding skylights which are beginning to leak, low renovation potential due to a solid concrete block structure, no fluidity in terms of combining classroom spaces, and centre concrete courtyards which are impractical due to being too hot in summer and too cold in winter.

The site also comprises prefab buildings, some of which have leaking issues.

Rakaia fishing competition entries gradually declining

A gradual decline in entries for the Rakaia River Salmon Fishing Competition reflects a declining fishery, say organisers.

About 540 anglers had registered as of Tuesday for the 2017 competition which opens tomorrow, and organisers were hoping numbers would reach last year’s figure of 559.

Rakaia River Fishing Promotions treasurer Nicki Kelly said numbers entering the competition had undergone a gradual decline from about eight years ago when they had to be cut off at 750.

Convenor Bruce Kelly said this salmon fishing season in particular had been “a shocker”.

“Not only for fish numbers, but the river’s been dirty a lot as well,” he said.

The promotions group established the annual competition in 1983, and over that time has raised about $200,000 for fish release and river health projects.

Kelly said in the 1980s it had not been uncommon for anglers to get four fish per day, and over one dozen fish per season.

“Those same people are now down in the ones and twos,” he said.

He suspected environmental degradation and climate change was behind the fishery’s demise.

to one by this time last year, and overall he had ended up catching two or three last year.

Like all competition entrants, he is hoping this season will improve, starting this weekend.

Entrants will be out on the river

at daylight tomorrow, if the river is fishable, and begin weighing in their catches by the afternoon.

Fishing will continue over the weekend, with a social function on Saturday night and the main prize giving on Sunday at lunchtime.

Pool air-con in councillors’ hands

The closure of the EA Networks pool complex on Tuesday might have angered users but it could be critical in convincing Ashburton District councillors to fund chiller units in next year’s budget, says Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

When temperatures soared on Tuesday afternoon the council closed the pool area. That move attracted a rash of criticism from the public with people saying building a multi-million dollar complex without cooling units

was short-sighted. Last year complex manager Steve Prescott made a plea for the council to fund cooling units, but councillors kicked that idea for touch, opting to monitor temperatures over another summer, tagging the units as possible inclusions in the 201718 budget.

The community outrage after Tuesday’s closure, however, suggested the units might be high on the priority list when budgets were discussed next week, Favel said. “The closure has helped considerably. My personal view is that

I’d like this be approved, but it’s a council decision. I’m just glad discussions on it are so close.”

When the cooling units were discussed last year, a range of options were suggested ranging in price from $300,000 to $1 million.

“We now need clarity around what’s available and the numbers,” she said.

Initial plans for the pool hall had air-conditioning units included. It is unclear when or why these were deleted, leaving the area with just heat exchangers that pump warm pool air outside and warm outside

air back in. “It was equally a surprise to the rest of council when we found out, we thought there was air conditioning in there,” Favel said.

The stadium build was managed by a committee made up of Stadium Trust members as well as councillors and council staff.

Unless money is invested in air chillers, Tuesday won’t be the last time the pools are closed for business, says council service delivery manager Neil McCann.

The ideal temperature for pool air is 26 degrees, he said but be-

cause the pool hall only has heat exchangers it is impossible to maintain this if the outside air temperature is higher.

“If that’s the case we don’t have the ability to keep the temperature at 26 degrees. To do this we need chillers,” he said.

Council staff would be making the case in next week’s budget discussions for $400,000 to be spent installing chiller units, McCann said. “From there it’s up to councillors to decide. Last year they decided to monitor it before deciding.”

Neighbourly spirit in action

A group of Ashburton neighbours, worried overgrown plants would result in a serious accident, fixed the problem themselves by funding their own garden project.

Orchard Grove residents had complained for some time that the growth of 1.5m high flax bushes, planted as part of a central carpark, were inhibiting drivers’ views in the area.

After contacting the Ashburton District Council, half the plants were removed, but they couldn’t stump up for the replacement of the plants.

Frustrated, the neighbours took matters into their own hands, and embarked on a whip around of the 13 households.

They managed to raise approximately $390, which has been used to purchase rocks and native plants.

Resident Cyril Keen said he had witnessed near-misses and a child was almost hit once on a scooter.

“I went and saw them (council) and they came and whipped out half of it,” he said.

Ron Arthur felt the situation was getting quite dangerous as a lot of cars were coming through the cul-de-sac.

However, Ashburton District Council open spaces manager, David Askin, said he was disappointed the neighbours had taken it upon themselves to remove the flaxes.

“Staff inspected the plants and found they were in good health.

They removed the outer line of flaxes to stop them being in the

way of traffic and also to give the remaining plants room to grow.

“Flaxes are an appropriate species to plant in that area, which is why they were chosen.

“It’s unclear to us why someone

took them out, especially since they were in good health, but we are pleased to hear residents have gotten together to replant the area.”

Arthur said it was a nice neigh-

bourhood and a lot of work had been put into the project.

Keen said the efforts resulted in community spirit and they were pleased to have it completed last week.

Ashburton’s civic centre and library site decided today

The future of Ashburton’s civic centre and library rebuild project will be decided today by Ashburton’s 12 district councillors and the district’s mayor.

And if the elected members follow the recommendation of consultants Opus Architecture and council staff, the new complex

will be built in Baring Square east.

This will require the council to buy two sections from the Methodist Church and another to the rear of the old County Council building.

It would also mean the county building is likely to be demolished but the Methodist Church would not as it sits on a separate lot of land.

To date the council has spent

more than $250,000 on information gathering to identify site options and on an extensive public consultation process.

It has opted to co-locate the civic centre and library, acknowledging this is the most economic option in terms of both build and in operating the two businesses.

Signing off the project today might not be without some op-

position as several newly elected councillors signalled during a workshop earlier this month that they wanted to relook at the option of building two separate complexes on separate sites.

A delegation of central business owners will also speak during the public forum at today’s meeting where they are likely to make a pitch for the new complex to be

built on land in the Eastfield site.

They see this as key to kickstarting the revitalisation of the central business area.

The council is a shareholder in the Eastfield company.

If councillors vote to revisit the two site option or to delay the project either option is likely to attract additional costs in terms of further public consultation.

Menz Shed taking shape

Construction on the new Ashburton Menz Shed is well under way at its new location.

Chairman Stewart Dunlop said things were “a wee way off”, but they hoped to occupy the new space on William Street by the end of April.

“It is great having it so close to the centre of town as it allows members to walk and makes it easy for members with disabilities to get here,” Dunlop said.

For the roughly 70 members of the Menz Shed, they will not only notice a larger shed, but also a shed that is far better laid out.

The about 400 square metre shed will be organised so the engineers, woodworkers, carpenters and painters all have separate areas to work. A meeting room will be part of the building for smoko, members constructing models, and of course for meetings.

Dunlop said the facilities will be highly accessible and perfect for anybody who wishes to take part.

At their current shed on the Methven Highway, small projects are being finished up, but no big projects will be undertaken until everything is moved to its new home.

Charges dismissed An Ashburton District Court judge has dismissed three charges of abusing a child, laid under antismacking legislation, against a Mid Canterbury man. Blake Geoffrey Moore had denied the charges at a trial before Judge Joanna Maze earlier this month and the judge reserved her decision after hearing from police and defence witnesses.

Moore appeared before her again on Monday, the judge dismissing all three counts.

Dairy prices drop Dairy prices have dropped 3.2 per cent at Fonterra’s GlobalDairyTrade auction. The average price was down to $US3474 ($NZ4850) per metric tonne yesterday morning (NZ time). The important whole milk powder price was down 3.7 per cent to $US3189 per tonne.

Trial date set A trial date has been set for a 65-year-old accused of killing a toddler in Manurewa, Auckland, in 2015. Kathleen Elizabeth Cooper appeared in the Auckland High Court yesterday morning. She had earlier pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder after a two-yearold suffered serious head injuries and was admitted to Starship Hospital in December 2015. The toddler died two weeks later.

A three-week trial was set down for the end of July.

Swarm of quakes Nearly 300 small earthquakes have been recorded in the Taupo and Rotorua areas since Monday last week, according to Geonet. Geonet seismometers between Taupo and Tongariro National Park recorded the swarm of earthquakes, which are centred about 10km north-west of Tokaanu, near Turangi. Since the quakes started on February 13 at 6pm, there have been 290 tremors.

The largest was a magnitude 3.8 at 9.35pm Tuesday. Geonet said earthquake swarms were a sequence of many earthquakes striking in a relatively short time in a localised area. They are different from normal earthquakes followed by aftershocks because no single earthquake in the sequence is obviously the main shock.

29 injured in Akaroa highway bus plunge Emergency services rushed to the scene of a tourist bus crash near Akaroa last evening.

Police say the bus and a car collided just after 5pm and the bus careered down a bank near French Farm.

Emergency services workers at the scene told a reporter 33 people were on board when it crashed near the Hilltop Tavern on the Christchurch-Akaroa highway.

At least 29 were injured – two seriously and two moderately, with the others thought to have only minor injuries.

A person in the car was trapped and seriously injured.

A St John spokesman said a helicopter and three ambulances were at the crash site on State Highway 75 and paramedics were assessing the patients’ injuries.

Photos from the scene show the wreckage of the bus lying on its side among the foliage.

People can be seen scrambling to get to the bus to help.

Trees behind the vehicle have been flattened and parts of the vehicle are strewn near the road.

A Westpac rescue chopper had landed at the top of the hill, a photo showed.

Police in high-vis vests were helping to direct the helicopter as it landed.

A staff member at the tavern told the Herald he was taking water to the victims and helicopters were flying overhead. A Fire Service spokesman said multiple fire appliances from Akaroa and Christchurch city had been sent to the scene.

The crash happened near the intersection of Summit Road and the Christchurch-Akaroa Road, police said.

A worker at the Hilltop Tavern told Newshub the crash happened just around the corner from the bar but he couldn’t see the scene from where he was. A customer told him multiple people were injured.

He said the hill was steep and if a bus went down there, it would be of concern.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs is hoping more students apply for NCEA scholarships following a 2016 student being successful in receiving one.

Dux Ben Todd was named as a physics scholarship recipient this month. He started at the University of Canterbury this week, where he is studying engineering. He plans to use the $500 awarded towards his course fees.

Schreurs said Todd’s winning of the scholarship was a credit to his ability, dedication and the support he had from his friends and family.

“I would like to think his results inspire some of the Year 13 students this year

Todd said he enjoyed physics as a subject.

While he enjoyed maths as well, physics was more context based and about the world around us.

He thanked his Mount Hutt physics teacher Bevan Clark for helping him study towards the scholarship.

Six years on, Christchurch quake victims remembered Their names were read out in an order reflecting their arrangement on the Memorial Wall, the central element of the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial.

The memorial along the Avon River was dedicated as part of the service, beginning at noon yesterday.

The wall was unveiled by first responders in recognition of their rescue and recovery efforts during the disaster.

At 12.51pm, the time when the 6.3-magnitude quake struck on February 22, 2011, there was a minute’s silence.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the day was an opportunity for people to come together and quietly reflect.

“The impacts of the quakes went right through the country and around the world for those

who lost loved ones in our city on this day six years ago,” she said.

“It is a time to reflect on our shared sense of loss and also to give thanks for the incredible work that emergency services did in our city after the quakes.”

Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu chief executive Arihia Bennett said the unveiling of the memorial would be a positive step forward after an extended period of upheaval.

“Oi Manawa, The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, will be a place where all people can spend time reflecting and honouring those who lost their lives, or were injured in the earthquakes,” she said.

“It will be somewhere people can contemplate and learn new ways to cope with the trauma they have experienced.”

FRUSTRATION OVER QUAKE CLAIMS Chalk was again a mode of protest for residents upset about their insurance claims as Christchurch marks the sixth anniversary of the devastating 2011 earthquake.

The community group Empowered Christchurch held a silent rally in Cathedral Square yesterday for “unheard and unsettled EQC and insurance claimants”.

The action was set down for 2pm so as not to clash with the dedication of the earthquake memorial.

A year ago, the group also held a protest, which ended with buckets of chalk being handed out for people to express their frustrations by writing a word.

Empowered Christchurch says that, in the intervening period, it has made submissions on relevant legislation and highlighted injustices in the recovery process.

It has also “engaged in endless and, unfortunately, largely fruitless correspondence with the different local and national authorities and politicians from the various parties”.

But it says there has been no substantial progress over the 12 months for claimants, a growing number of whom are heading to the High Court.

The group produced a summary of the status quo 72 months on from the quake, including:

Millions targeted for possible deportation Millions of people living in the United States illegally could be targeted for deportation – including people simply arrested for traffic violations – under a sweeping rewrite of immigration enforcement policies announced yesterday by the Trump administration.

Any immigrant who is in the country illegally and is charged or convicted of any offence, or even suspected of a crime, will now be an enforcement priority, according to Homeland Security Department memos signed by Secretary John Kelly.

That could include people arrested for shoplifting or minor offences – or simply having crossed the border illegally.

The Trump administration memos replace narrower guidance focusing on immigrants who have been convicted of serious crimes, are considered threats to national security or are recent border crossers.

Under the Obama administration guidance, immigrants whose only violation was being in the country illegally were generally left alone.

Those immigrants fall into two categories: those who crossed the border without permission and those who overstayed their visas.

Crossing the border illegally is a criminal offence and the new memos make clear that those who have done so are included in the broad list of enforcement priorities.

Overstaying a visa is a civil, not criminal, offence. Those who do so are not specifically included in the priority list but, under the memos, they are still more likely to face deportation than they had been before.

Netanyahu praises Aust Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday praised Australia for being “courageously willing to puncture UN hypocrisy” on anti-Israel resolutions.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull marked the first visit to Australia by a serving Israeli leader by writing an opinion piece in yesterday’s The Australian newspaper that backed Netanyahu’s criticism in 2015 that the United Nations General Assembly had adopted 20 resolutions critical of Israel in the preceding year and only one in response to the Syrian war.

“My government will not support onesided resolutions criticising Israel of the kind recently adopted by the UN Security Council and we deplore the boycott campaigns designed to delegitimise the Jewish state,” Turnbull wrote, referring to the December 23 resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem as a “flagrant violation” of international law.

The United States abstained from that vote and Australia, while not a member of the security council, was one of the few countries to publicly support Israel’s position.

Pilot radioed in ‘Mayday’ A pilot repeatedly yelled out “Mayday” but did not say what the emergency was before his light plane crashed into the roof of an Australian shopping mall, killing himself and four American tourists, an accident investigator said yesterday.

Police blamed “catastrophic engine failure” when a twin-engine Beechcraft B200 Super King Air crashed into the Direct Factory Outlet mall in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon on Tuesday moments after takeoff from a nearby runway.

But Australian Transport Safety Bureau chief commissioner Greg Hood said modern twin-engine aircraft are designed to continue flying if an engine failed.

Max Quartermain was the 63-yearold owner of the charter company Corporate and Leisure Travel.

Quartermain was investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau after a near mid-air collision that happened in September 2015.

Hood said he would not comment on Quartermain or his flying record.

Model turns hero An Australian model and his friend have been hailed as heroes in New York after they risked their lives to save seven teenagers who fell through ice in Central Park. The children, aged 15 and 16, were playing, dancing and taking selfies on a frozen pond this week but their laughter turned to a fight for survival when the ice fractured and they fell into frigid waters.

Luckily for the teens, Australian model Ethan Turnbull (above), 24, and his friend Bennett Jonas, 23, were skateboarding past just at the right time and saw the ice collapse. Turnbull and Jonas worked as a team as they pulled the kids out of the icy water. All were pulled out safely and treated for hypothermia, with one taken to hospital.

Big calls coming for councillors Sue Newman

T

aking the heat out of the EA Networks pools debate is simple.

It might come with a hefty price tag, but when we’ve already spent more than $30 million on the entire stadium, another $400,000 is not a lot to ensure what we’ve got is useable all day, every day.

While Tuesday was the first occasion on which the pools have closed because of excessive heat, there’ve been plenty of other occasions when it’s been almost unbearable inside the building if you’re not in the water.

Voting on this one will be complex – ratepayers who hate to see money spent on anything other than basic infrastructure won’t be happy if they approve the spending, while the rest won’t be happy if they don’t.

It’s going to be a tough week or so for our councillors.

Today brings the reality check of what it really means to be in the district’s hot seats.

The future of the civic centre and library project goes to the vote late this morning.

Staff and consultants have made their recommendation, but it’s one not everyone likes.

Baring Square east might have plenty of feel-good factor, particularly now there’s an option to build the co-located complex while still retaining the historic Baring Square church, but it’s not every one’s number one choice.

There have already been indications a cluster of new councillors might be out to overturn decisions made by their predecessors or that they might want to see options already discounted pulled back into the mix.

However it pans out, not everyone will be happy.

Our district councillors will have to put their big boy and girl pants on when the votes are cast or when budget debates get heated.

Being a councillor is not about being popular, it’s about doing what’s right for the community, about putting aside what your friends and neighbours might think and taking a bigger look at the bigger picture.

The civic centre and library build is one for future generations; the decisions made will have to stand the test of time.

And likewise next week’s budget discussions, they’re not about pet projects, they’re about spending our money wisely for the future and that means decisions that may not be universally popular today.

Prison sentence in bribery case

was employed by Rodney District Council, and then Auckland Transport.

On the back of council contracts, Borlase’s firm grew rapidly from a small operation that barely broke even, to making annual profits of $3.8m in the year prior to the offending being detected.

The pair had claimed their financial relationship was aboveboard and involved consultancy work that was unrelated to the council contracts Justice Fitzgerald, in delivering her verdict, said this explanation was “implausible”. She said the lack of any documentation supporting seven years – and more than a million dollars – of claimed work by Noone “defies common sense”.

During the course of an eightweek trial, Crown prosecutor Brian Dickey laid out what he considered to be a “culture of corruption” in the roading department at RDC and Auckland Transport centred on the two accused.

Neill threatens Cadbury boycott Actor Sam Neill has threatened to call for a boycott of Cadbury products should the company go ahead with the closure of its Dunedin factory.

In what was a shock for not only the 362 Cadbury’s staff but also the wider Dunedin community, US multinational Mondelez International announced last week the closure of the profitable Dunedin plant, preferring to manufacture in Australia.

The Cadbury owner said it was no longer able to absorb the increasing production costs from manufacturing in Dunedin and would be closing in 2018.

Actor Sam Neill expressed his displeasure with the move on Twitter.

“If #Cadburys really close their factory in Dunedin, I will ask every one here & Australia to NEVER sell or buy anything Cadbury EVER again,” he said. Dunedin dairy Brunch ‘N’ Lunch is one of a growing number of businesses and individuals calling for a boycott of Cadbury products.

“I’ve taken all my Cadbury’s stuff out and that’s it, I’m not going to buy it any more,” said owner Errol White.

He had spoken to other Dunedin business owners who were considering removing Cadbury products from their shelves.

The Boycott Cadbury NZ Facebook page had 1178 members as of yesterday morning.

However, the union representing the majority of 362 Dunedin Cadbury staff set to lose their jobs, E tu, has called for the public not to boycott Cadbury’s chocolate.

E tu industry co-ordinator Chas Muir said the factory closure was

The offending came to light after Noone took a holiday in 2013 and a colleague who took over his work expressed reservations over a number of payments to Projenz awaiting authorisation.

A subsequent investigation resulted in Noone’s deputy, Barrie George, admitting his receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars in undeclared gifts – mostly international travel – from Borlase.

The pair were later fired from their jobs and the matter was referred to the Serious Fraud Office.

George, who pleaded guilty prior to trial and gave evidence as a witness for the prosecution, told the court of the first time he had accepted a bribe from Borlase.

Last month anti-corruption pressure group Transparency International ranked New Zealand as the least-corrupt country on earth.

Two men convicted of corruption in New Zealand’s largest ever bribery case, involving more than $1 million given by a roading contractor to a senior manager at Auckland Transport, have been sent to prison.

Former council manager Murray Noone, and Projenz managing director Stephen Borlase were investigated by the Serious Fraud Office and in December found guilty on six and eight charges, respectively, of taking and giving bribes.

Justice Sally Fitzgerald at the High Court at Auckland yesterday sentenced Borlase to five years, six months and Noone to five years in prison.

She noted the sums involved exceeded any other domestic conviction for bribery or corruption conviction and caused damage to New Zealand’s civic institution and international reputation.

“Offending of this nature has a wider effect, harming New Zealand’s public reputation as a place where corruption is low or nonexistent,” she said.

World shearing record broken in Southland Southland shearer Leon Samuels set a new world solo eight-hours strongwool ewe-shearing record after a tally of 605 in a wool shed north of Gore this week.

Shearing at Argyle Station, Waikaia, Samuels was targeting the

solo record of 603 set by Te Kuiti shearer Stacey Te Huia in December 2010.

He kept the large crew and growing number of supporters on edge until the dying moments, claiming the record only in the

last two minutes of the day which comprised four two-hour runs, the first starting at 7am, and the last ending with sheep number 605 just after 5pm.

Needing an average of 151 a run (or 75.5 an hour) to break the

record, he was two off the pace with 149 in the first two hours, although three ahead of the 146 shorn by Te Huia in his first run.

Samuels was back on track with 153 in the two hours to lunch and 151 in the run immediately after

the one-hour break, coming home with 152 in the charge to the bell.

In his record Te Huia shore runs of 146, 152, 153 and 152, breaking the previous record of 578 shorn in a Hawke’s Bay shed by Northland-raised Matthew Smith.

On-farm heifer competition Organisers of the Methven A&P Association are encouraging farmers from around the district to join them for the judging of their on-farm heifer competition on March 1.

Convenor Trevor Monson said there was a lot to learn on the day as farmers followed judges from farm-to-farm looking at rising one and two-year heifers being prepared to take their place in the herd. He said classes were for stock owners and professional graziers.

The judges will visit 19 farms in Methven next Wednesday and the category

winners will go on to the Canterbury onfarm heifer contest.

Monson and fellow Methven dairy farmers Phil Lowe and Ben McIntosh are running the Canterbury contest this year and want to breathe new life into it. Five A&P associations from around the region will send their winners for further judging this year and the Methven organisers want that to grow next year to include all associations between Waimate and Amuri. Mayfield continues to be part of the fold, but Ashburton has not held a contest since 2014.

The Methven A&P Association’s dairy heifer contest is being held on Wednesday. ■ Heat a dash of oil in medium sized non-stick frying pan. Add the garlic and Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Breast and stir-fry over high heat for 4 to 5 minutes or until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through.

■ Place the drained rice noodles on a serving platter. Top with the chicken, snow peas, carrots,

cucumber, red or yellow pepper, bean sprouts and herbs. Drizzle over the dressing and serve immediately.

■ Dressing: ■ Whisk all the dressing ingredients together. Alternatively put ingredients into a jar. Screw on the lid and shake to combine.

Report from Social Day Tuesday February 14, 2017 Hope McIntosh played a selection of tunes on the piano while members were arriving.

Irene Cooper welcomed 45 members and asked if there were any birthdays and one member enjoyed the playing of “Happy Birthday”. Subs are due and can be paid at Community House (reminder there is no eftpos, cash or cheque only).

There will be no Social afternoon in March as we are instead having a trip for members to Salmon Tales at Rakaia for afternoon tea (at each person’s cost). Names of anyone interested in going need to be into Maxine at Community House (Phone 308 1237) by Friday March 3.

Irene announced she will no longer be baking for the sales table. She has been baking for these for 10 years and the committee and the members all applauded her with thanks.

On show was a National Travelling suitcase of alpaca neckties and scarves.

Contestants had been given three shades of alpaca fleece which could be spun, felted or woven which then were left plain or dyed into a creative work.

The Show and Tell table had in children’s wear a cardigan, a sleeveless hoodie. Mickey Mouse jersey and Angel Pockets for wee prem babies who had died. Patterns were available.

In adult wear were two light weight scarves. In general were various kinds of dyed hanks of wool and some “Raggy Doll” cat fur and some spun.

A lady who has worked in Afghanistan for 15 years came to show us slides of “Feel Good Afghan” yarns and said Cashmere goat wool was better combed off the animal rather that shorn. We handled some of the lovely soft wool which was spun by peasant woman for very low pay only to sell overseas for exorbitant prices. We were able to hear about some of the good things in Afghanisan among poor but happy people.

On Monday February 20, President Peter Thomas welcomed 60 plus members to the first general meeting of 2017 of Grey Power Ashburton. Apologies were received from Sheila Graham and Lorraine Keely, these were accepted.

Peter reported on the recent Grey Power Zone 6 meeting held at the Hotel Ashburton, items of interest were remits sent to the board and the re-election of Denise Fitzgerald as Zone Director.

Peter then welcomed Mayor Donna Favel resplendent in her mayoral chain to the podium. Donna spoke about the learning curve of being the new, and first lady Mayor of Ashburton; also the first graduate of Ashburton College to become mayor; and the youngest mayor of Ashburton.

Having been the only lady on the Council for the last few years it is pleasing to have the company of four more ladies. Donna then spoke of work of volunteers in the community with particular reference to local firefighters and the Trust Power Awards scheme for volunteers. She urged members who were eligible; to apply for rates rebates and also explained the smart phone “snap-send-solve” app to notify Council of problems.

There were several questions from the floor that Donna gave a careful and comprehensive response to each one.

Greer Ricketts passed a vote of thanks and presented Donna with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed. Margaret Twamley entertained on the piano while afternoon tea was served.

Mid Canterbury Men’s Club After concluding business our first meeting for 2017 began with Mini Speaker Gerald Small, who described his years working in the grain industry.

He began his career with Wrightsons in Ashburton as an office junior and worked his way up to Grain Agent covering mainly the Westerfield/Laghmor areas. Mergers in the industry over the years saw him working under various firms, including Farmers, Hodder and Tolley and Canterbury Seed. He was highly regarded by both farmers and agents for his expertise.

Our Main Speaker was Craig Hansen, Managing Director of Computer Solutions. He gave an illustrated talk on his kite buggy trip across the Sahara Desert. Accompanied by two friends plus a support crew, they used Peter Lynn designed kites to power their buggys. They encountered many hardships along their arduous journey including unstable sand dunes, active landmines, and swampy quagmires. By the time they finished their odyssey in Senegal they had covered a record breaking 2,160 kms and become the first to cross the Sahara by kite buggy.

After being thanked by Bill Hetrick, President Doug Anderson closed the meeting.

Goals galore in Champions Manchester City overcame an onslaught from Monaco’s prolific attack to score three late goals in 11 minutes for a 5-3 win in a wild Champions League game.

The highest-scoring first leg in a Champions League knockout match was breathless from start to finish, leaving both coaches to congratulate their teams on producing a Round of 16 game to remember.

“It’s something special for football,” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “When two teams want to attack and at-

tack, the football is marvellous.”

City was on the ropes when Radamel Falcao scored with a glorious chip, his second goal of the game, to put Monaco 3-2 ahead in the 61st minute at Etihad Stadium. At that stage, Monaco – the highest-scoring team in Europe’s top leagues – was threatening to score at will and City looked like it was heading out of the competition.

But in a stunning turnaround, Sergio Aguero volleyed in a 71st-minute equaliser for his second goal of the night, John Stones prodded home from a

corner in the 77th, and Leroy Sane pushed City further ahead with a tap-in in the 82nd.

“I imagine everyone was happy to witness such a spectacle,” said Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim, who was willing to excuse his young team for its late collapse.

Guardiola was keen to stress that the match is far from over.

In a damning indictment of his defence, he said City would have to score in the second leg on March 15 to stand any chance of going through.

“If one team can score a

thousand-million goals, it’s Monaco,” Guardiola said. “It’s a long time since I saw a team attack with such a huge amount of good players.”

The night’s other last-16 first leg was also a goal feast, with Atletico Madrid winning 4-2 at Bayer Leverkusen as French forwards Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro overwhelmed the German side’s defense.

They both scored for Atletico, last season’s losing finalist, along with Saul Niguez and Fernando Torres.

Pie goalie gets some high profile support Support is trickling in for the “roly-poly goalie” who resigned following an FA Cup tie for taking part in a gambling-related stunt.

Media heavyweight Piers Morgan and England football great Gary Lineker have tweeted support for 146kg Wayne Shaw, the pie-eating stopper who came a cropper.

Morgan said reserve goalkeeper Shaw’s resignation was politically correctness gone mad, while Lineker lamented that a wholehearted club man had been hung out to dry.

But the Football association and Gambling Commission are not amused, and nor is Sutton United club chairman Bruce Elliott after the loss to Arsenal.

“He has got himself in the papers again and the fame obviously has gone to his head a little bit, but we will soon bring him back down to earth, don’t worry about that,” Elliott told the Tel-

egraph. Sutton manager Paul Doswell said: “I’m devastated, the chairman is devastated. I have spoken to Wayne and the guy is in tears, crying down the phone. It is a very sad situation.”

Before the match, a bookie offered odds of 8–1 that Shaw would eat a pie on camera. Shaw knew of the promotion, and duly obliged by tucking into a pie late in the game having told mates about the betting chance.

But the fun and the fairytale have turned sour for the nonleague club, with Shaw forced to resign and the story dominating British sports coverage.

Another England legend Alan Shearer, a BBC pundit, recalled Shaw was a Southampton youth team mate.

Shearer said: “I actually followed my dreams to the Premier League, and he followed his to the burger van.”

The Hurricanes have taken a solid 25-man squad to Japan to open the team’s Super Rugby title defence against the Sunwolves in Tokyo on Saturday.

The touring squad includes all five of the Hurricanes’ 2016 All Blacks with captain and hooker Dane Coles, openside Ardie Savea, wing Julian Savea, first five Beauden Barrett and halfback TJ Perenara all on the plane to Japan.

“I’m quite excited to be riding him again,” Hirini said.

“He’s a very classy horse and I think he should be able to beat this field, despite his weight.”

Hirini guided Overtheriver

into second place in last Saturday’s Gr.3 Taranaki Cup and the 23-year-old was refreshingly honest about her performance.

“It wasn’t one of my best rides and we were out three wide for a while before I let him go forward,” she said.

“He’s probably my best ride and I think Milly Moo is a very good one as well.”

She rode the Stuart Manning-trained Milly Moo to a runaway victory on a heavy

track at Poverty Bay and they shouldn’t be troubled in the Vista Motor Lodge Dash by the likelihood of improved footing.

Hirini is apprenticed to Mike Breslin and her book of rides also includes stable representatives Dandeedee (Silver Fern Farms 1900) and Master William (Russell Roads 1900).

Race a unique experience Several hundred dedicated road cyclists will line up in Rakaia on Saturday for the annual Ride the Rakaia.

The 100km race is a unique opportunity to ride across the Rakaia River bridge on State Highway One in the relative safety of a peloton.

The bridge will be closed to vehicles for 15 minutes from 8am to allow the cyclists to cross in neutral formation both the

river bridge and then the overhead rail bridge.

Organiser John Moore said crossing the Rakaia as a single cyclist could be a hair-raising experience and the entrants would move as one big group across the bridges in a controlled start before turning left after the overhead bridge and heading towards Te Pirita.

The ride takes in a steep descent and hard climb up

through the Rakaia Gorge, with king and queen of the gorge cash at stake, then heads back to Rakaia along the other side of the river.

Moore said the gun cyclists would cut out the distance in two and a half hours while those wanting to take in the gorge scenery at a slower speed could take up to five hours.

He expected a lead bunch of about 60 to head into the gorge

with the climb then testing legs; an elite bunch usually regrouped to contest a sprint finish back in Rakaia.

He said a few cyclists were also riding in a shorter recreational ride that finished at the Te Pirita Hall.

Motorists using the highway have been warned to expect delays on Saturday morning while the bridge is closed for 15 minutes.

With Super Rugby returning this weekend, it’s a chance for rugby to return to the public psyche – opinions and all.

We’ve got the British and Irish Lions visiting this year, so there’ll be no shortage of discussions around selections and form as we edge closer towards their arrival on our shores.

I’ve got no doubts that the Aaron Smith who has torn teams apart in the past is still there – hopefully sitting in a changing shed somewhere champing at the bit to get back out on the paddock and make a point.

At his best, there’s nothing

better to watch on a rugby paddock than Smith terrorising his opposition.

He’s got the ability to turn a game on its head and lift a team into a position where they can push for success.

With an outstanding looking backline outside him, Smith won’t have to really put the pressure on himself early on in the season. He’s got the likes of Lima Sopoaga, Malakai Fekitoa and Ben Smith to feed off and gain some motivation – a welcome prospect to anyone looking to return to form.

And let’s face it. If the Highlanders are to continue their great return to form of the past two seasons it’s going to be guys like Smith who carry them there and reliance on his experience

and skill will be well called on.

Long gone now is the tag of being the inconsistent team of New Zealand rugby – the boys from South of the Waitaki have been the model of consistency for the past two seasons and with a similar squad to those two years they should be able to hit the ground running when they step out against the Chiefs tomorrow night.

And it will be Smith who will have to guide them.

And with TJ Perenara hot on his heels, and in some corners in front of him, for the black jersey with the number nine on the back of it, we might just see something special this season from Smith.

He owes that much to his fans and supporters anyway.

Warriors front-rower Ben Matulino’s playing return may be delayed as he fights to overcome an infection following knee surgery early in the new year. Matulino injured his left knee during preseason training and underwent surgery in January which was expected to rule him out for the first six rounds however this latest setback could prolong his absence.

The infection has hindered his rehabilitation over the past month and he has been forced to use an antibiotics drip which he was wearing at the club’s season launch breakfast in Auckland on Tuesday.

Lockey’s back Lying in his hospital bed with five fractured vertebrae, Auckland multi-sportsman Ross Lockey thought his Ironman days were over. In November 2015, Lockey, 55, had been knocked off his bike in a training accident, suffering a fractured neck and back. For four days, he was unable to move or walk. But the Takapuna grandfather is now back in the saddle, putting the finishing touches to preparation for his seventh swim/cycle/run endurance event at Ironman New Zealand in Taupo on March 4. And his perseverance has seen him selected as the 2017 Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Unstoppable Champion, receiving a support and training package. “Mental attitude, my high degree of previous health and fitness, and support from both the whanau and my sporting network all played major roles in getting me back on the Ironman track,” reflects Lockey.

Redress protocol dropped Last season’s controversial redress protocol has been axed by Supercars for the 2017 season and a Kiwi will take over as driving standards officer.

Experienced racer Craig Baird will assist deputy race director Michael Masi with handing down penalties in a new system that sees Masi given the responsibility of investigating incidents.

The redress scenario came to a head at last year’s Bathurst 1000 with leading drivers Jamie Whincup, Scott McLaughlin and Garth Tander involved in an accident while a redress was being undertaken.

A new version of the driver code of conduct has been issued to teams ahead of the new season.

“We identified a need to improve the system we had with a particular focus on increasing transparency and consistency of

College needs big batting performance Ashburton College needs a big second innings batting performance this weekend after they found themselves well behind after a poor first innings batting display on day one of their game against St Thomas College of Canterbury at the Ashburton Domain last Saturday.

was built around captain Will Graham who top scored with 57 in his team’s meagre 131. Tom Ravenscroft (19), Ben Niles (11) and Jarod Hopwood (15) were the only other batsmen to get to double figures.

Graham then got the defence off to a great start getting a wicket first ball of the innings, which was followed by another to Harry

MacMillan in the second. Graham soon had his second to have St Thomas in early trouble at 10/3.

But the visitors dug in, their next partnership put on 60 before it was broken by Gareth Hunt.

St Thomas also had their captain to thank for their first innings lead of 28, top scoring with 78 before being removed by James Forbes. Forbes picked up another

three wickets and Niles chipped in with two.

This left Ashburton 14 overs to bat in the day which didn’t go so well for them – they lost three wickets scoring 57, including that of Graham.

Niles and Angus Jemmett are at the crease and they and the rest of the team need to bat for most of this Saturday.

Foran speaks Warriors five-eighth Kieran Foran has spoken about his initial time at the club and says he was always confident his one-year contract would be registered by the NRL. Foran joined the Warriors on a one-year deal last October but faced a nervous four-month wait before the NRL rubber stamped the deal last Wednesday.

The former Manly and Parramatta playmaker will be available to make his first appearance for the Warriors in the round three clash against the Bulldogs in Dunedin on March 17, pending a second psychological assessment.

“I was always confident that we would get over the line and get registered but it was just going through the process,” Foran said in an on-stage interview at the club’s season launch in Auckland yesterday.

The 26-year-old said the move to New Zealand has been good for him after he struggled with various personal problems over the past 12 months.

Foran has not played since last May with his year cut short by a season-ending shoulder injury.

“It’s been great,” he said. “It’s a breath of fresh air actually. I needed it.

“It’s great to get out of Sydney and come home around extended family and just get back to my roots. Just being around big love and to start fresh at a new club.”

Foran is enjoying his new environment and said he was able to settle in quickly alongside his new teammates.

“It’s been brilliant. The boys have made me feel welcome from the get-go. It’s just one big family at the Warriors.”

Anama The February meeting was held in the Mayfield Church hall with 12 present and six apologies. Concern was expressed for those who had been ill or in hospital, and good wishes extended for a grandson’s engagement.

The branch had sent $500 to the North Canterbury Rural Support Trust, and baking was done by members in the wake of the Kaikoura earthquake. A let-

Celebrations are being planned for the 85th anniversary of Mid Canterbury Rural Women, (originally Women’s Division of Federated Farmers), with costumes, dress, food, and culture through the decades on display.

Speaker for the morning was Pauline Hewson JP. She told of the English origins and development of the Justice of the Peace organisation, then early days in the colony of New Zealand. James Kendall was the first Justice appointed to New Zealand in 1814 by Governor Macquarie. Without any real law enforcement to help, and the isolation from Sydney, he faced many challenges.

The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and made New Zealand a British Colony.

The Royal Charter made provision for more JPs to be appointed.

Members were interested in hearing about the reading of the Riot Act and its origins in Britain.

Today’s Justice of the Peace assists people from all walks of life with services which include signing legal documents, taking statutory declarations, certifying copies, witnessing signatures, visa applications, affidavits and affirmations.

There are 64 active JPs in the Ashburton district, some of whom operate a weekly signing service at Community House on Tuesdays.

Went through all the business that was on hand then carried on to general business.

We planned and decided what we were doing for our Link Meeting which is next month on March 1 in the back hall at St Paul’s.

Then Kerry gave us a report about what was going to be the format of the Provincial 85th Jubilee to be held in November and what our branch was going to do for it.

We then asked if we were agreeable to do a project of knitting for the community by knitting scarves and hats or beanies for Cancer Society. Everyone agreed to this.

We then made up the programme for the next 12 months with only two months that weren’t filled in.

We were then reminded that the next Provincial meeting was on February 24 at 10am at the Sinclair Centre.

We then closed the meeting and got something to eat and drink. Some members then left while the rest of us went and had a look around the fantastic complex we have here in Ashburton. We should be so proud of it.

again a great success with a good number of members and friends of Winchmore District in attendance on a warm evening at our local hall.

What a delightful speaker we had in Kathy Lynch five times winner of the Coast to Coast, Olympian, and competitor in gruelling multi-sport endurance events who now resides with her partner of many years Peter on a small block near Methven.

Kathy once said “It’s better to wear out than rust”. The stories she told of her life as an athlete were most enjoyable.

She was in the Coast to Coast events at the early stage when Health and Safety and all the other regulations we have today were only in the future and it was real Kiwi No 8 Wire seat of the pants type of action.

No funding, no coaches and she was even her own bike mechanic as she could trust her own workmanship.

With no funding Kathy had to work to fund her sport and entry to all these events.

As well as New Zealand events Kathy competed in Americas and Europe for a number of years in our winter and then in New Zealand event in our summer.

Those in attendance were delighted with her style of presentation and some of the stories she told us about her times with adventure sport and also her own experiences learning how to shear and other farming activities.

The catering team from St Andrew’s Church provided us with a lovely two course meal which was enjoyed with wine and juice along with much friendly chatter.

Our next meeting will be the March 15, 7.30pm at the hall, sharing nibbles and recipes. All welcome.

Sport Taylor hits milestone With one final blow off the last ball of the innings, Ross Taylor completed his 17th century for New Zealand, setting a record for ODI cricket at Hagley Oval yesterday. Taylor moved one century ahead of former opener Nathan Astle as his 102 not out off 110 balls. Taylor completed his 33rd 50, going to 6000 ODI runs in the process. Only Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle and Brendon McCullum have made it that far previously. He joins a quality group on 6000 ODI runs, then put himself on top of the century table in ODIs.

Black Caps level series New Zealand are back in business after a thrilling six-run win over South Africa in the second ODI at Hagley Oval yesterday.

South Africa needed 15 to win off the final over from Tim Southee, with their last pair at the crease. Curiously Andile Phehlukwayo blocked the first four balls before getting fours off the last two. He clearly didn’t trust last man Imran Tahir and hoped to get a loose ball early in the over to get New Zealand jittery.

Instead, New Zealand’s 289 for four was enough to hold off South Africa’s 283 for nine.

It was a significant day for New Zealand’s senior batsman Ross Taylor, as he completed his 17th ODI century off the final ball of the innings.

That makes him the country’s most prolific one-day centurymaker, moving one ahead of former opener Nathan Astle.

South Africa’s chase didn’t

start well, Hashim Amla lbw to a lovely ball from Tim Southee and Faf du Plessis beaten and bowled by seamer Colin de Grandhomme.

However Quinton de Kock continued his good form and set about laying the platform with JP Duminy.

When he did arrive, after Duminy was easily stumped off Mitchell Santner, de Villiers took charge. De Kock hoisted a catch to deep mid wicket off Trent Boult but David Miller put on another 68 with de Villiers before being caught behind off legspinner Ish Sodhi.

South Africa needed 96 off the last 13 overs but the loss of de Villiers, hooking fractionally early at a Trent Boult short ball to be caught behind, started a slump.

South Africa lost three for 15 in 20 balls but Dwaine Pretorius, showing why he has a first-class average of 42, and Phehlukwayo gave the tourists

some late hope. They needed 33 off the last three overs, 20 off two before Trent Boult bowled Pretorius for a 27-ball 50.

Boult finished with three wickets, Santner took two and there was one each for Southee, de Grandhomme and Sodhi.

New Zealand’s innings got off to a rocky start with Tom Latham failing again, his trough now lasting six innings – 22, 7, 4, 0, 0, 2 – since his 137 against Bangladesh in Christchurch on Boxing Day. However Dean Brownlie and Kane Williamson put on 40 before Williamson (69 off 75 balls) and Taylor shared a 104run third wicket stand in 17.3 overs, scoring at a deceptively good rate.

When Williamson was caught at long on off legspiner Tahir, Taylor found a reliable ally in Jimmy Neesham.

The pair shared an unbroken 123-run fifth wicket stand, a record against South Africa.

Neesham finished on 71 off 57 balls while Taylor completed his record-setting 17th century, but left it until the absolute last, slapping Wayne Parnell to the boundary, and celebrating with a mighty swing of his bat.

He was brilliantly caught on the long on boundary on the penultimate ball by a diving Miller, who then had to throw the ball infield as his momentum took him to the boundary rope.

Those two runs took Taylor to 98 before he completed the job with a slap to the cover fence. He took 110 balls and hit eight fours.

Taylor and Neesham took 89 off the last 10 overs, 51 off the last five.

Pretorius did a good job with his medium pacers, taking two for 40 off 10 overs, while Parnell was steady.

The series now moves to Wellington for game three on Saturday.
