THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Burglar, 17, sent to jail A violent crime spree has led to a lengthy prison sentence for a 17-yearold Ashburton man. Bronson James Randal Witehira was sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison when he appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Timaru District Court yesterday. Witehira was convicted on charges of aggravated robbery, burglary, receiving cannabis for supply, theft from vehicles, dishonestly entering motor vehicles and possession of cannabis for supply when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court on October 16. The offending, which Judge Maze yesterday said was “significant”, took place between July 1 and August 3 this year. The court was told Witehira and a co-offender accosted a man on July 26, where they assaulted him and stole his wallet, containing bank cards, and a cellphone. The victim became briefly unconscious during the attack, which left him with bruising and damaged teeth. While searching Witehira’s address on a warrant on August 1, police discovered 43 grams of cannabis and a stolen passport. Witehira also forced his way into multiple vehicles in the days following and stole various items and cash. On August 3, he broke into a lo-

cal sports shop, where he stole knives, scooters and cash. Defence lawyer Douglas Brown said tensions at home had led to Witehira becoming intoxicated for “over a week”, which had thrown his self-control “out the window”. Mr Brown said a prison sentence could lead to Witehira leaving prison with criminal contacts he did not currently have. While Judge Maze said Witehira’s age and personal circumstances had to be taken into account, she believed the range of offences committed in such a short time frame presented a “significant risk” to the community, and she said the level of violence used was concerning. Witehira was yesterday sentenced to a prison term of one year and 10 months on the aggravated robbery charge and two months for the burglary charge, although both sentences will be served concurrently. Special release conditions were also imposed, including drug and alcohol assessments and non-violence counselling. Witehira was also ordered to pay a total of $2147.28 in reparations, and was convicted and discharged on the other charges. However, Judge Maze reserved Witehira leave to apply for home detention, if a suitable address could be found.
