CRASH CLAIMS LIFE By Jaime Pitt MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

An early morning crash on a rural Mid Canterbury road yesterday left a 50-year-old man dead and emergency services personnel having to deal with low-hanging power lines which initially hindered their ability to reach the vehicle safely. The accident, on Lismore Mayfield Road at around 7.15am, claimed the life of the man, who Police are yet to identify, after the car in which he was the

sole occupant left the relatively straight piece of road, crashing into a power pole. Three Fire and Emergency New Zealand units attended the crash, two from Ashburton and one from Mayfield. Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Chris Price said due to the positioning of the car next to the power pole and the proximity of the power lines, the car had to be towed back on to the road before the man could be extracted from the vehicle.

The serious crash unit was notified and is investigating. EA Networks commercial manager Jeremy Adamson said 206 customers were affected by power having to be cut to the area to allow emergency services to work at the scene. Power was restored to 183 of those customers approximately 30 minutes later, leaving 23 without power. Adamson said the site will be handed back to them once the serious crash unit had complet-

ed their investigation. A cross arm on the power pole was broken due to the impact from the vehicle causing the power line to sag, but it did not come into contact with the ground, and the pole was moved. Eight people have now died in five motor vehicle accidents in the Ashburton District this year. All five have occurred in rural areas, with a failure to give way being recognised as the cause of three of them.

“From there it was a simple extraction and we began first aid and CPR,” he said. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said a rescue helicopter had been called to the scene, but was stood down before arriving, and other St John staff were also in attendance. The crash occurred on a section of Lismore Mayfield Road, near the intersection with Hackthorne Road. The road was closed for some time as a result of the crash.
