Challenge to fit financial literacy into curriculum

The drive to introduce financial literacy as a subject in secondary schools could fail at the first hurdle – space in the curriculum and finding appropriate teachers, says Ashburton College principal Ross Preece.

He applauds the move to make students money smart but said plans to introduce Sorted in Schools to Year 9 and 10 students next year will struggle to gain traction in an already overloaded school curriculum.

The online programme is being trialled in several schools next term.

A money management programme run by the BNZ at college had been one of the most popular options in Year 10 and the Sorted in Schools programme would likely be equally as popular, Preece said.

“It’s a great idea and I totally support it, but the question is who is going to teach it and where will we fit it into the curriculum. It’s simplistic to say we’ll get schools to teach it, but we still have to teach everything else as well.”

Preece said he supported the idea of teaching financial literacy and money management at the college because it was part of real life learning, but logistically finding time or a teacher put it off the radar.

The programme, however, could find a place in the college’s new integrated learning curriculum that will be introduced for Year 9 students next year. This will see the learning

Across many subjects secondary schools struggled to fill staff vacancies and money management would be no different, Preece said.

“It would be great if it was a must-do subject, but how do we get the teachers to teach it?

There was a dire shortage of teachers for physics, maths, digital technology, technology and lately for English teachers too, he said.

“It’s now a global market for teachers. If you head off overseas to teach you get an instant 50 per cent increase in salary, so why not?”

The Commission for Financial Capability is launching Sorted in Schools after a survey of school leavers indicated 82 per cent wanted to learn more about money in class time.

Money management and borrowing money/loans were the top two topics they wanted to learn about.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury (TSMC) can boast it has multiple New Zealand representatives within its ranks after returning from the pinnacle event on the national target shooting indoor calendar.

A number of Ashburton shooters spent the weekend in Nelson competing in the annual North versus South match, which was followed by the New Zealand team postal shoot against the British Home Counties.

TSMC was represented by a large group, including Lanelle McArthur, Emma Smith and Shania Harrison-Lee who were in the South Island open, women’s and junior teams, with McArthur the captain of the junior team.

Also taking part were Michaela Smith, Sandy Bennett and Nina McKenzie in the South Island women’s team, which was managed by Ashburton’s Bryan Hunter.

TSMC president McKenzie said it was a tremendous achievement for junior women to gain selection for all three island teams. The Mid Canterbury group filled nearly half of the positions in the South Island women’s team and a quarter of the junior team, at a competition where there were multiple

Olympic and Commonwealth representatives present.

The island team matches ran all day Saturday and despite a few nerves and a couple of upsets, after a full day of shooting TSMC had three members through to New Zealand teams – McArthur in the open, junior and women’s team (of which she was captain), Harrison-Lee in the women’s and junior teams, and Michaela Smith in the women’s team.

McArthur was the top woman from both islands, hence her naming as the New Zealand women’s captain. Her 398.026/400.040 was a remarkable achievement for a junior.

In total she shot for six different teams across the weekend and of the 22 targets she shot her total was 2178/2200, an average of 99/100, which was simply phenomenal, McKenzie said.

Harrison-Lee also had a stellar weekend, making two national teams and being second top score in the New Zealand women’s match (296/300). She was also presented with her silver medal from the national B Grade Championship, which was shot a few weeks ago, over the weekend.

The weekend’s hard luck story

went to Emma Smith, who was one place short of the New Zealand junior team but shot an excellent score in the Sunday Derby match (294), as did Bennett (296). McKenzie also finished her campaign well, after experiencing an unfortunate technical problem early on the Saturday.

In the team matches, South Island won the junior match but lost the women’s match narrowly, along with the veterans and open matches.

Also competing over the weekend from Ashburton were Greg Menzies in the South Island open team, and John Fleming in the South Island veteran team. Fleming’s granddaughter Phillippa Fleming was also in action, shooting for the North Island women’s team. She had represented the South Island for several years but was now studying in the North Island.

The weekend’s event was hosted

by Target Shooting Nelson, at their impressive new Saxton Field facility.

Selection was achieved after qualifying scores were posted at a range of open championships around each island from April to July.

Boosting learn to swim options

Four decades of passion for art and eight decades of rich life experiences have collided in a unique birthday celebration at the Ashburton Art Gallery this month.

Barbara Jaine is approaching her 80th birthday next week and is marking the occasion with her biggest ever solo exhibition, comprising 62 pieces – most completed within the past 18 months.

The nurse, farmer’s wife, antique dealer, grandmother and “lover of the outdoors” said a memory or experience lies behind every piece in Celebrat8ion.

One watercolour painting, captured on spot, illustrates the spectacular view from her son-in-law’s Stewart Island holiday home. Others show the scenes Jaine observed on a trip to Wales three years ago and of Western Australia, where she is a regular visitor.

A watercolour safari to Kaikoura provided inspiration for a waterfront series, while flowers from her own garden have been captured across another wall of the exhibition.

New course to boost driver numbers Ashburton’s transport industry will be the winner when a new Transport & Logistics programme starts in South Canterbury.

Enrolments are open for the New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator) Level 3, which commences at Ara’s Timaru campus in late October.

The popularity of the course was eveident when inquiries were received before the programme had been launched.

The programme aims to fill the need for skilled transport and logistics workers in Mid and South Canterbury and to get more skilled drivers on the road.

The course has been developed through substantial collaboration between local businesses, Ara Institute of Canterbury and key organisations.

Industry partners developed the content of the 30-week programme and an industry panel will continue to ensure the programme delivers the key skills, knowledge and competencies that industry expects.

CEO of the Road Transport Association, Dennis Robertson says the programme said the initiative was great for the region and the industry at large as it would help address the most pressing problem of the driver shortage.

Shopping for a ship The Government will buy a second-hand Norwegian vessel to take over dive and hydrographic functions formerly carried out by two vessels for the New Zealand Navy. The budget for the purchase, modifications and introduction into service of the 85m Edda Fonn is $103 million, to be paid from existing funding, Defence Minister Ron Mark announced. The Edda Fonn, built in 2003, will be outfitted with the dive and hydrographic systems required by the New Zealand Defence Force before being put into service by November 2019.

A Transport and Logistics sector day brought together industry and secondary school students ahead of the launch of the Certificate in Commercial Road Transport.

Fire destroys house

Negotiations ongoing

A young Auckland family have been left with literally the clothes on their back after a fire tore through their home. Six Muriwai fire appliances were at the scene for about six hours on Thursday night after the blaze began at the young woman’s Domain Crescent home about 5.40pm. Northern fire communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson said the two-storey house was well-involved when crews arrived.

Mid Canterbury principals and teachers who went on strike last week are eagerly awaiting to hear news from the next round of negotiations with the Ministry of Education.

Principal representatives from NZEI Te Rui Roa entered negotiations on Monday morning, while teacher representatives will enter talks today.

The national teachers’ union have already clocked up more

than 20 days of negotiations with the ministry since May. At the beginning of June the ministry offered new teachers a 14 per cent pay increase over three years and experienced teachers a six per cent rise.

NZEI responded with disappointment, highlighting that for 85 per cent of teachers the offer is only just over two per cent a year – which is not dissimilar to a cost of living increase.

Principals’ lead negotiator Louise Green said they are hope-

ful of making progress towards a settlement after seeing the “overwhelming” public support for their cause during nationwide rallies and industrial action last Wednesday.

More than 500 strikers and supporters who marched the streets of Ashburton were met with toots, waves and messages of support.

Allenton School principal Bruce Tilby said NZEI had been in contact with members almost daily with updates.

At the Ashburton rally, along with others across the country, members showed strong support for the idea of a two-day strike should it be needed.

However, NZEI president Lynda Stuart advised that it was only indicative of a feeling, not a decision.

As well as the pay jolt, which is hoped to help attract more people to the profession, members are asking for more teachers and more resources to support students with additional needs.

A learner driver clocked by police at 212km/h in an illegal street race will delay his home detention sentence to be with a family member – who has just been hit by a car, in a case of “painful irony”. Tepiwa Michael Peter Keremete Riwai, 32, appeared for sentencing in the Hutt Valley District Court yesterday for the driving, but Judge Arthur Tompkins agreed to postpone home detention until later this week so Riwai could rush to hospital.

Rails changed for safety A new running rail for the Ashburton Racecourse is receiving glowing reports from industry participants.

The rail, which was installed recently by the Ashburton Racing Club, covers the circumference of the grass track and comes as a replacement for an old rail which has stood proud at the course for more than a decade.

With the need to adjust the position of the rail to allow for track preservation and track conditions, the areas where the old rail sections join together no longer aligned smoothly and did not hold as firmly as desirable. In contact they could break apart easily and expose sharp and dangerous edges that could cause serious injury to riders and horses.

The venues inspector from New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing “strongly encouraged” the Ashburton club to seriously consider the purchase of plastic rail for health and safety reasons. The plastic rail is

safer, it is higher than the metal rail giving horses more direction and riders more confidence, it reassembles much more easily if it has been in heavy contact causing it to come apart, and it can be easily moved to cater for the needs of the track manager to provide the best options for all participants.

The rail has been given the thumbs up by Racing Safety Development, local trainers and riders and the course manager, Gary Chamberlain.

Committee volunteers were able to help with the manufacturers and course staff to erect the rail in a reasonable time frame.

Currently the new rail sits three metres out from the existing position and will remain there until the club’s feature meeting, the Ashburton Cup and Barneswood Farm Stakes meeting in October.

The next meeting for the club is next Thursday.

Death ‘will have huge impact’ The death of television journalist Greg Boyed has sent shockwaves through the country as those closest to him and even those who didn’t know him grapple with the devastating news.

Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson warned that Boyed’s death would impact others who suffer depression and said it was a stark reminder to check in with friends and family who were vulnerable to mental health issues.

“Greg’s death really puts a very human face on what is a big issue that our whole community is addressing.

“I look at Greg and he’s a face that I knew, and just talking about it now I get tight in the chest and feel a bit upset because it also makes me remember the times when I’ve been in those really difficult places.”

As someone who lives with bipolar disorder and who previously tried to commit suicide, Robinson said he has periods of depression himself but has

Others may be triggered by Boyed’s death, he said.

“Anybody who is a public figure or a celebrity who is suspected to take their own life, it tends to get a lot of specific media attention so that in itself raises a lot of issues for people.”

Robinson said as a community we need to recognise that Boyed’s death was a loss and people were entitled to feel sad-

ness, and be supported in that.

“Greg Boyed was a very likeable personality in the media and often with any sort of public figure, people who see them in some way as a role model or somebody they felt connected to, even if they’d never met them personally it can feel like a real grief or a real loss.”

He said it would also put a spotlight on mental health and again raise questions around what was helpful for sufferers.

That included paying close attention to vulnerable friends and family by being there or keeping in contact, and listening without judging or trying to provide a solution.

“Keeping up that human contact, letting them know that you care. Really just letting people know they’re not alone.”

Though Boyed’s death was a tragedy, Robinson said it might encourage people worried about someone to have the courage to ask them if they’re okay, or prompt others to seek help.

“It really raises the issue of the community is the first line of support. It’s usually our friends and our family who are the people we reach out to when we’re struggling.”

He said there was no simple way to make sense of such a sudden death other than that times of mental distress are part of life and should be destigmatised.

“We are in the midst of a mental health inquiry and I think the public’s very aware that there’s some real challenges in building an adequate response to mental health problems and building up the resilience and positive mental health of our community.”

Robinson said there was always room for hope around mental health.

“It’s totally possible to have a flourishing and rewarding life regardless of having gone through or continuing to have to manage things like depression.

Recovery is totally possible.”

Teen admits manslaughter A Christchurch teenager has pleaded guilty to manslaughter ahead of a murder trial due to start next month.

Moses Eli Hurrell, 17, was initially charged alongside two others with the March 23, 2017 murder of Pierclaudio Raviola.

Raviola was found in the car park of Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club in Christchurch with serious head injuries on the morning of March 24 last year.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition but died two days later.

Hurrell was 16 when he was first charged with murder.

Yesterday, at a pre-trial hearing at the High Court in Christchurch, he agreed to plead guilty to a charge of manslaughter. He also admitted a burglary charge.

Justice David Gendall remanded Hurrell in custody for sentencing on September 10 – the day the murder trial will begin for two others who have been jointly charged. The summary of facts has been suppressed ahead of the trial.

Speech, poetry to the fore After weeks of preparation and practice, the day finally arrived for Chertsey School’s speech and poetry competition last Tuesday.

Under the eye of expert judges Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel and ANZ Bank’s Fleur Mulligan, senior students competed for their respective age-group speech

and poem competition honours.

The competition was very close, but Anna McFall won the Year 5 and 6 section with Solar Systems, Sari Jones won the Year 3 and 4 section with Adults Should do Their Jobs and Lacie Davis won the Year 0 and 2 poems with Friends.

Students hit the skifield Hampstead School Students enjoyed bluebird conditions on the snow at Mt Hutt earlier this month.

Struck by imaginitus A big bout of ‘imaginitus’ struck Ashbuton Borough School’s Year 3 and 4 classes on Friday, July 27.

Arriving at school, students discovered all their classrooms were taped off because they were toxic and contaminated.

They were sent to the performance centre, where all were checked for imaginitis by doctors (their teachers) and informed their condition was curable with a day of using their imagination.

In and around the performance centre were 20 different stations for the students to explore and create – including playdough, dress-ups, woodwork, readers’ theatre, percussion instruments, sock puppets, craft, writing, maths, art, dance and drama.

During a winter tournament earlier in the term, 87 Year 5-8 students represented Ashburton Borough School in four sports – netball, rugby, hockey and football – against other schools from across Mid Canterbury.

Borough’s teams brought good attitudes to the sports fields, leaving coaches and managers proud.

Don’t just lock your car, empty it too W

hen it comes to burglaries, it takes two to create the perfect event – the willing offender and the security slack property owner.

And that’s never more true than when it comes to what’s almost an everyday crime in the Ashburton District, car thefts and thefts from cars.

We’re averaging three a week and that’s a pretty grim statistic in a district of our size.

While we can’t do a whole lot about the miscreants floating around our streets after dark, we can do a whole lot to ensure our own vehicles are either safely tucked away in the garage or if

they’re parked street-side or up a driveway, there’s nothing visible that’ll test an opportunist thief.

Locking your car is only the first step; locks only deter thieves if there’s nothing behind the glass to tempt them inside. Leave something tempting on the seat and you become a target.

It takes only a few seconds to

collect up your belongings when you leave your car and head indoors or to throw items in your boot, but those few seconds could save your gear and stop your car windows being smashed or the locks picked.

It’s a small price to pay for avoiding the grief that comes with losing something valuable.

Just how high the risk is of becoming a victim of petty thieves is demonstrated by an experience in my own neighbourhood.

Take one street populated by dozens of careful home owners who religiously lock their cars every night.

And then take one moment of

carelessness on the part of two of those and you have an after dark opportunity for residential street sifters.

Two vehicle owners who lived several houses apart, forgot to lock. The next morning both discovered things were missing from their cars.

That two thefts were able to occur on one night in an area where cars are always locked shows very clearly that you never know who’s lurking out there just waiting for the right opportunity.

It’s freakish to think that on any given night there could be low-lifes out there just waiting for a property owner to get care-

less and decide your goods are better off in their hands.

Even with the best will in the world, the small-time thefts from cars are going to rank down the priority list for under resourced and over worked police. They do what they can to check the scene, record what’s missing and try to reunite goods with owner, but most often it’s a lost cause.

Goods gone and the vehicle owner’s file left clogging up the system.

It’s all about making your vehicle unattractive; why break into a vehicle if there’s nothing in sight other than seatbelts and an empty seat.

ne of the government’s most important jobs is making sure New Zealand is safe for everyone who lives here.

Every New Zealander wants, needs, and deserves to be safe – and we know many Kiwis feel they could be safer than they are today.

That’s why the government is committed to increasing Police numbers nationwide. On Monday, the Police Commissioner announced 1280 extra police officers will be deployed around the country, and as part of that we’ll soon be welcoming 121 more police officers into the Canterbury police district, which of course, captures the Rangitata electorate. That’s great news.

We’re also putting 520 more officers nationwide into emergency response, specialised investigations units, preventionfocused teams, and training our future officers.

Overall, within the next five years there’ll be 1800 new police officers and 485 support staff around New Zealand thanks to the coalition Government’s plans. More police means less

crime and safer communities.

Sometimes that happens by catching criminals; other times it happens by preventing crime in the first place.

Family violence, gangs, organised crime, and the illicit drug trade are major issues in New Zealand. More police puts us in the best position to tackle serious and organised crime. We’ll resolve more crimes, quicker.

And we’ll seize more cash and assets of criminals, reducing the power of organised crime groups.

Police will also work alongside our Ashburton community to identify issues relevant to us in particular, and prevent crime from happening.

Community policing isn’t just about patrols; it’s about collaboration between the com-

munity and law enforcement to steer people who could get into trouble towards a life free of crime, where they can support themselves and their families to live their best lives.

Whenever we give everyone a chance to succeed without resorting to crime, everyone wins.

Changes to the justice system during the past few years haven’t worked, as crime victimisations and prison numbers both went up.

The previous government froze police funding for four years, leading to more people being victims of crime, burglary rates rising, and the public having less confidence in its police service.

At the same time, National wanted to invest over a billion dollars in an American-style mega prison at Waikeria, which would have just been an oversized crime school.

What National did wasn’t working to keep New Zealanders safe, which is why this government is doing things differently.

The $298 million funding boost for police in Budget 2018 shows we’re serious about preventing

crime and making communities safe. Some 340 new police recruits are training hard right now, with 80 more starting their career with NZ Police every four weeks.

We’re already receiving record numbers of applications.

And we’re building a leaner, more effective prison at Waikeria – complete with a dedicated mental health unit so we can rehabilitate people better and steer them away from reoffending.

I’m proud of our police service and honoured to be in a position to make sure they have resources and support they need to continue their great work in our community. More police on the beat will help connect those who need help to get help, before they take the path that ends in prison.

No wonder farmers are uneasy T

he sun is shining and all is well in farming land. Or is it?

Certainly the mild winter has given most farmers a jump-start for fastapproaching spring.

Mud is the great downer for farming, but is light on the ground because of the unseasonably dry and warm period. No wonder dairy staff have a lift in their step.

That’s brought calving forward and a good start for milk flows. Yes, if the weather carries on like this without more snow for the tops then there is the real worry for irrigators that rivers won’t have the same recharge volumes.

Crops went into the ground in autumn with less of a hitch than a year earlier. We are also approaching lambing in the hill country soon, so hopefully storm-free conditions await so the newborns get a good landing.

Market prices for lamb are strong, beef is back, but still healthy and venison remains at a high.

Fonterra’s small cut to last season’s payout forecast and no second-half dividend has admittedly pleased few. How long the expected $7/kg payout for this season will stay at this level is anyone’s guess. Another drop by 3.6 per cent in the GlobalDairyTrade auction yesterday will have farmers nervous.

But that’s not the real elephant in the

room – mycoplasma bovis has that honour.

Last week the Government announced law changes which were widely accepted, with the exception powers that allow officials to search farms without a warrant.

Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor explained the changes were to ensure farmers became more compliant about registering animal movements and the warrant-less searches went no further than powers already existing under other legislation.

No doubt this is aimed at the worst offenders, but how widely and how often are warrant-free searches carried out elsewhere?

No wonder this sits uneasily with farmers as the powers are stronger than those available to police for drug and other criminal-related searches.

Sheep wool source of healthier diets for pets In one of the more unusual twists of wool science, AgResearch scientist have found that protein from wool can improve the health of pet cats when added to their diets.

The finding could open up new possibilities for sheep wool to improve the digestive health for other animals and, potentially, human beings.

AgResearch science group leader for food and bio-based products Dr Jolon Dyer said there was a lot of work going on to discover new uses for wool to support New Zealand’s sheep industry.

“The research is telling us that sheep wool has many useful attributes, and one of those now appears to be proteins derived from the wool that could be used as a dietary supplement to improve digestion and nutrition, and therefore overall health.”

Scientists used a method called controlled hydrolysis to extract the wool proteins. Protein hydrolysates taken from

wool were then added as an ingredient in a pet food for cats, and compared with standard cat food.

The findings indicate that the wool protein hydrolysates offer promise as a functional ingredient in pet foods, and also as a new nutritional ingredient in foods generally.

AgResearch senior scientist Dr Santanu Deb-Choudhury, who led the study with fellow scientist Dr Emma Bermingham, said the hydrolysates offered real potential as a supplement for pet diets.

The next step will be to study the effect of the wool hydrolysate on animals other than cats.

“There’s a lot of potential in terms of how it can add to the wellbeing of pets and other animals, and even people, but we do need to see how it stacks up in the further research,” Deb-Choudhury said.

The findings have just been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Food & Function journal.

No record attempt this season

Not even another bottle of champagne is likely to sway Eric and Maxine Watson to do another attempt at the world wheat yield growing record this season.

Heavy rain over the critical sowing phase thwarted thoughts of a repeat bid before it could even get started.

The Wakanui couple are recognised by the Guinness Book of Records after harvesting 16.791 tonnes per hectare on their farm in 2017 to take the previous record from UK farmer Rod Smith.

Curiously, one of the incentives for them to attempt the record was a fridge magnet of a magnum of champagne.

This was given to them by their son, Philip, many years ago on the promise that if they ever achieved the world wheat growing record a full-sized bottle would go to them.

This was duly delivered by Philip, now 38 and living in the United States, when they topped the record on their home soil.

The magnet is still on their kitchen fridge, but it won’t be a motivating force for a repeat record.

Eric Watson said they had almost certainly ruled out another attempt this season.

“This heavier country gets a bit wet at times and the autumn wasn’t that easy as we had a lot of rain and received our annual rainfall of 600mm by June. We did get the crop in and mostly on time, but it was hard drilling grass – I drilled late one night 66ha and it was a good job I did because it rained that night and it took a long time before we could get back on the ground.’’

Attempting a record wheat crop is no mean feat as the entire attempt has to be surveyed by a registered surveyor and the harvest has to be filmed by three video cameras and weighed by a certified weighbridge.

Three justices of peace also have to attend the harvest, as they must only work in two-hour stints, according to the rules, and there must also be at least two independent witnesses.

“You want to sow in early April for a record crop and while we did get our wheat in in April, it had water laying in it and some of it was drowned out and had to be redrilled.’’

Partly under water was also chicory, plantain and a small amount of ryegrass.

Watson met Smith during a visit to his farm and has yet to hear if the Northumberland man will try to wrestle the record off him. It’s been extremely dry in the UK and not ideal conditions for a record bid.

The Watsons’ record feed wheat crop was planted in April, 2016, and harvested in February the following year.

Maxine said the champagne

promise had always been a family joke.

“He did give us a very nice bottle of champagne though.’’

She said the attempt wasn’t hugely disruptive to their cropping operation and the main disruption was having to harvest at a certain time then putting the original day off because of the weather.

Another inspiration for their attempt was the world record for barley set by Warren Darling of Timaru.

No secret treatment was given to their high yielding crop, said Watson, who has been farming on the property for 25 years. The crop’s nitrogen requirements of 258 kilograms a hectare was less than normally used as a result of deep soil testing.

“It’s about doing everything on time and looking after the crop.

We did nothing special. It was a good plant variety and a good growing season with a kind winter and a summer that wasn’t too hot.’’

The wheat crop was grown on an 11.9ha site, which fell well within the 8ha minimum set by Guinness authorities. Fortnightly leaf analysis was taken for monitoring trace elements.

“There was the odd bit doing 20t/ha but when you are going down a spray tram line with an irrigation wheel line you are doing about 13t and that’s all part of the attempt.’’

The Watsons are unsure where the record crop eventually went, possibly to Anzco’s Five Star Beef in Ashburton, for chicken feed or

to dairy farms and nor did they get paid extra money, except for the larger tonnage.

Watson said in hindsight he would have changed nothing about tending the crop, apart from perhaps slowing down the drilling speed to get better plant spacing and less bunching.

After the wheat crop was harvested the paddock went into plantain last year and is reserved for radish and bok choy seed this year. The site is one of their better paddocks with lighter soils than the Beach Road end and less clay, so it is easier to work.

The Watsons’ record is listed on Guinness Book of Records’ website, but was not in its book and nor were any other agricultural records. They still, however, proudly hold their certificate.

Sci-fi fans heading our way The World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is heading to New Zealand for the first time after Wellington won the rights to host the 78th annual event in 2020.

Legendary Game of Thrones author George RR Martin will headline the event as the Toastmaster, which will run from July 29 to August 2.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester said it was great that the city could attract such a high-profile event.

“It’s great the city can attract such a high-profile convention and I’m sure it will be a roaring success that local businesses will benefit from,” Lester said.

“Wellington is home to some of New Zealand’s best creative talent and we will do our best to ensure the delegates find the city a home away from home.”

The event is expected to bring 2000 visitors to the Wellington region and deliver $4 million to the economy.

Meridian Energy has achieved its highest level of earnings, up to $666 million, and net profit rose marginally to $201m for the year ended June 30. The company said it overcame its lowest New Zealand generation since 2013.

Group earnings increased 1.4 per cent to $666m, due to better hydro inflows in the second half of the year, which helped to turn around a half year ebitdaf decline of 7 per cent. Chief executive Neal Barclay said strong cashflows allowed Meridian to declare a 1.5 per cent higher dividend for the year, which includes a continuation of shareholder returns under the company’s exiting capital management programme.

Fletchers in the red, reports $190m loss Fletcher Building has made a $190 million loss, only the second time since listing on the NZX in 2001 that it slipped into the red, shareholders will get no dividends for the full year and no trading update has been provided.

The company with a market capitalisation of $5.8 billion yesterday released its annual result for the year ended June 30.

It declared a loss of $46m in 2009 and said yesterday FY19 earnings guidance would not be provided until the annual shareholders’ meeting later this year.

The $190m loss for the June 2018 year is a big turnaround

from the $94m profit for the June 2017 year.

“In line with the company’s dividend policy to pay dividends in the range of 50-75 per cent of net earnings before significant items, no final dividend was declared in FY18. The company expects, subject to satisfactory trading performance, to be in a position to resume dividends in FY19,” it told the NZX yesterday.

“FY19 earnings guidance will be provided at the 2018 annual shareholders meeting,” it said.

Operating earnings were $710m which Fletcher said was within the company’s earnings guidance of $680m to $720m.

Kiwi Slime Princess could have partners Global entertainment giants Nickelodeon says it is keen to work together with the 12-yearold Kiwi Slime Princess.

The two, Nickelodeon and Katharina Weischede – a Year 7 student at St Mary’s College – are currently embroiled in a trademark battle.

Katharina, who calls herself Slime Princess because she likes making slime and dressing as a princess, turned her slime-making hobby into a home-based business two years ago.

But Nickelodeon’s New Yorkbased parent company, Viacom, filed an opposition to her Slime

Princess trademark, claiming it was in breach of its own marks of “Slime” and “Nickelodeon Slime”.

The entertainment company said yesterday it wanted to see how they could work together.

“We at Nickelodeon are thrilled that so many young fans love slime as much as we do and find creative ways to express themselves with it,” a Nickelodeon spokesman said.

“As such, the Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand team recently connected with Katharina and family to discuss an opportunity to work together.”

Trade Me Group is distributing $100 million via a 22 cents per share special dividend, as the online auction company announced it turned over more than $250 million for the first time to deliver a 3.9 per cent increase in net profit for the year to June 30 of $96.6 million. The chairman of the Wellington-based company, David Kirk, said the board had “determined that the best use of $100 million of capital is to pay a special dividend to shareholders”, having consistently accumulated cash and reduced debt since listing on the NZX nearly seven years ago.

“After the distribution, our gearing becomes similar to our Australian peers and we retain plenty of capacity to invest for growth,” said Kirk, who also announced a final dividend of 10.5 cents per share, on top of the 9.1 cents per share paid as an interim dividend in March. Both the final and special dividends are fully imputed and will be paid on September 20.

A2 milk doubles Alternative milk company A2 Milk said its annual net profit shot up by 116 per cent to $195.7 million for the June 30 year, driven by a big leap in infant formula sales into China and Australia. Revenue came to $922.7m – an increase of 68 per cent over the prior corresponding period. A2 said its infant formula share strengthened to 5.1 per cent in China and 32 per cent in Australia. There was substantial physical distribution growth to about 10,000 stores in China and 6000 stores in the US, it said.

NZ dollar climbs The New Zealand dollar climbed above 67 US cents as stronger than expected consumer spending added to already increased demand for risk-sensitive assets.

The kiwi traded at 67.03 US cents as at 5pm in Wellington from 66.89 cents at 8am and up from 66.66 cents yesterday. The trade-weighted index advanced to 72.36 from 71.97 on Tuesday.

New Zealand June quarter retail spending rose 1.1 per cent from a year earlier on growing demand for hardware and building supplies.

The construction industry already faces capacity constraints and economists said the data reduced the chance for a rate cut from the Reserve Bank, which has placed greater emphasis on growth under new governor Adrian Orr. That improvement added to the already growing demand for stocks.

Chimichurri prawn skewers

Serves 12 1C chopped italian parsley 2T chopped oregano 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1/2 t red chilli flakes 1/2 t ground cumin 2T lemon juice, plus wedges, to serve 1/3 C vegetable or olive oil Salt and pepper 24 prawns, peeled and deveined Cooking oil spray 12 short bamboo skewers ■ Place herbs and spices in a food processor. Process until finely chopped. Add oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper and process until combined.

■ Combine half the parsley mixture and prawns in a large bowl.

Cover with food wrap and marinate in the fridge for 30 minutes. Pour remaining parsley mixture in a jug, cover with food

wrap and chill.

■ Thread 2 marinated prawns on to each skewer.

■ Preheat a chargrill pan or barbecue to a high heat. Spray prawns with oil and cook turning for 6 minutes or until prawns change colour.

■ Transfer to a serving platter,

drizzle with reserved parsley mixture and serve with lemon wedges on the side.

■ Tip: Soak skewers in cold water for 10 minutes before using to prevent from scorching when cooking.

Trump ‘directed’ hush money, says Cohen Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, pleaded guilty yesterday to campaignfinance violations and other charges, saying Trump directed him to arrange the payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and a former Playboy model to fend off damage to his White House bid.

Cohen’s extraordinary account marks the first time that any Trump associate has gone into open court and implicated Trump himself in a crime, though whether – or when – a president can be prosecuted remains a matter of legal dispute.

The guilty plea was part of a double dose of bad news for Trump: It came at almost the same moment his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted in Alexandria, Virginia, of eight financial crimes in the first trial to come out of special counsel Robert Mueller’s sprawling Russia investigation.

In a deal reached with federal prosecutors, Cohen, 51, pleaded guilty to eight counts, including tax evasion. He could get about four to five years in prison at sentencing on December 12.

In entering the plea, Cohen did not name the two women or even Trump, recounting instead that he worked with an “unnamed candidate” to influence the election.

But the amounts and the dates all lined up with the $130,000 paid to Daniels and the $150,000 that went to Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal to buy their silence in the

Boyle quits Bond The next James Bond movie has lost its director. Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, along with star Daniel Craig, announced yesterday that Danny Boyle has exited the project over “creative differences”. Boyle, the director of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, earlier this year confirmed that he would direct the 25th 007 film.

Boyle and his regular collaborator John Hodge were working on the script.

Production on the film, often referred to as “Bond 25,” was to begin in December.

The movie is to be Craig’s fifth outing as James Bond.

As cable networks were showing split-screen coverage of the conviction and plea bargain by two of his former loyalists, Trump himself boarded Air Force One on his way to a rally in West Virginia and ignored shouted questions about the men.

Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, noted in a statement that “there is no allegation of any wrongdoing against the president in the government’s charges against Mr Cohen”.

Daniel Petalas, a former prosecutor in the Justice Department’s public integrity section, said, “This brings

President Trump closer into the criminal conduct”.

“The president has certain protections while a sitting president, but if it were true, and he was aware and tried to influence an election, that could be a federal felony offence,” Petalas said. “This strikes close to home.”

After the court hearing, which ended with Cohen released on $500,000 bail, the lawyer wiped away tears as he gazed out a courthouse window. He left the building and headed straight for a black SUV with tinted windows.

A couple of people outside chanted, “Lock him up!” as they recorded the scene with their phones.

The Eagles out in front The Eagles’ greatest hits album has moonwalked past Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become history’s bestselling album of all-time in the US. The Recording Industry Association of America said that the Eagles’ album – Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 – is now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies. The album was released in 1976 and pushes Jackson’s Thriller, which is 33x platinum, to second place. RIAA also said that the Eagles’ Hotel California, released in 1977, is now 26x platinum and makes it the third bestselling album of all-time.

Turnbull defeated his exhome affairs minister 48 votes to 35 in a snap Liberal leadership ballot on Tuesday, but Peter Dutton is now working the phones ahead of a second tilt.

Standing alongside Finance Minister Mathias Cormann and Treasurer Scott Morrison in Canberra yesterday, Turnbull declared the government would not take its big business tax cuts to the next election because of a lack of support in the Senate.

He also announced the retention of the energy sup-

plement for pensioners and welfare recipients, which the government had wanted to repeal because it was compensation for the now-abolished carbon tax.

“We have to recognise in all of this the iron laws of arithmetic,” Turnbull said.

Asked whether the numbers are going Dutton’s way, the prime minister said he had won a ballot on Tuesday.

“The iron laws of arithmetic confirmed my leadership of the Liberal Party,” he said.

Dutton is doing his own maths, telling Melbourne’s 3AW he was speaking to colleagues.

“You don’t go into a ballot believing you’re going to lose

and if I believe that a majority of colleagues support me, then I would consider my position,” Dutton said.

Asked whether he anticipated another challenge, Turnbull said: “No.” Morrison and Senator Cormann expressed confidence in the prime minister.

“This is my leader and I’m ambitious for him,” Morrison said, giving Turnbull a hug.

“I support the prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull,” added Senator Cormann.

Turnbull said his cabinet ministers who voted against him in the ballot had given him their “unequivocal support”.

Backers of Dutton believe

his support levels are quickly climbing.

“Now that the genie is out of the bottle, I’m not sure we can put it back,” Liberal MP Craig Kelly told the ABC earlier.

Dutton has started a media campaign to reach out to Australian voters, calling for a royal commission on fuel and energy prices, and said he would consider removing the GST on electricity for families and pensioners.

So far Turnbull has only accepted the resignations of Dutton and International Development Minister Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, who wrote a scathing letter criticising the Liberal party for “drifting too far to the left”.

All the results of the winter season should be in by next week. We have had a great turnout to all events and have been treated kindly by the weather.

The new carpet is playing really fantastically and everyone has enjoyed the whole concept and different games that have been played. Congratulations to Faye and Barry who have run these tournaments tirelessly and have given our club their time to create such a good atmosphere to play in. Thank you.

Faye’s soups really went down a treat! Just a reminder that our opening day for the summer season is Saturday September 15. In the words of Mama Mia ’Here we go again’.

Allenton Croquet Club Our first meeting prior to the new season was attended by 14 members and were welcomed by President Ann Sunbeam.

Our Mid-Winter Lunch was a very pleasant day with members enjoying a finger food lunch, this was followed by board games and cards being played. There was much chat and laughter had by all.

Some members attended a combined lunch at the Stables. Was very enjoyable and a good chance to catch up with members from Methven and Waireka before the new season.

Events coming up are as follows: Croquet opening day is September 17, names in by 1.15pm, to start at 1.30pm, plate for afternoon tea. Thereafter club days are Wednesday and Saturday. These days will start at 10.45am and break for lunch at 12.30, restarting at 1.30pm. Members are welcome to pay either code Assn or Golf. Bringing our lunch is a good time to chat and have a catch up.

“Have a go day” will be held on September 22 at 1.30pm and it is hoped that anyone will come along and have a go at playing. It is great for all ages and a good way to meet new people. Mallets are provided.

September 8 at 10am members are asked to assist with a working bee to do a general garden tidy up before our new season starts.

Next meeting will be September 19 at 3.30pm.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club President Errol welcomed Linda Osborne onto the committee. He showed us the new Friendship signs to be placed at the north and south entrances of town and reported on the recent SIAFC meeting he attended as the Ashburton Area Rep. The date of the Christmas lunch is December 11.

Tony explained the all day trip to Waimate and Oamaru now scheduled for October. He is also working on a half day Ashburton trip in September with visits to three local businesses.

Member David Home told us about recent travel. Bev and he flew to Houston, travelled to New Orleans where highlights included wandering the famous streets and the highly rated WW2 museum, on to see the sights of New York before going to Paris where John’s brother lives.

In the UK they spent time with family in both Poole and Guernsey before doing a narrow boat cruise on the historic English canal system. This took them through picturesque countryside and villages. Finally, they spent some time in the Cotswolds.

Our main speaker was Ashburton Guardian editor Matt Markham. Matt hails from Methven and has a background in horse racing. He got into journalism by helping a sports reporter with the racing page which eventually led to Matt himself becoming a sports reporter.

He gained more experience on a city paper, formal journalism study and working at Harness Racing NZ then returning to the Guardian as sports reporter before becoming editor.

Mayfield Golf Club The 2018 club champions were crowned at the Mayfield Golf Club on Saturday. The day’s big winners were Andrew Lake for the senior men and Christine Ross for the senior ladies. The other ladies’ titles went to Judy Webb in the ladies bronze one grade, and Anne-Marie Blair for the ladies bronze two grade. The men’s intermediate title went to Gordon Duthie, while the men’s junior A was won by Charlie Rapsey, and the men’s junior B was won by Alan Sim. For the nine hole players, Jill Ludemann won the ladies’ title, and Eddie Graham won the men’s title.

He told us that at 139 years, the Guardian is not only one of the oldest papers in NZ but also is one of the few that is independent; it has been owned by the one family for 100 years. This independence has allowed it to focus on the local community and sporting news, sections now lacking in many of the larger papers. In recent times it has won national awards and is the only daily in NZ that has increased circulation.

It is continuing to develop by introducing digital subscriptions, the Ashburton and Selwyn Apps and producing supplements such as You, Farming and Dairy which focus on local stories. He explained the production process and how the very small news room staff which includes part time journalists put out the daily paper.

Ashburton Creative Fibre We look forward to a busy interesting September.

Our meeting was full with discussion and organising and ended with an interesting look at the construction of the ‘magic Jacket’. The pattern works with small to large jackets with either kimono or fitted sleeves.

We will have a craft day at the Plains on September 2 starting at 11am.

The next spin-in is on September 3 for all those not attending the annual fibre retreat Staveley that runs from the 3rd till the 7th. You are welcome to visit and participate for the day. The next Area day will be at the Plains on September 15 and the next spinning and knitting outing to Rosebank is on the 18th at 1.30pm. This was a huge success at the last event enjoyed by all present. There is an exhibition at the Christchurch museum on the 20th of all things related to fibre and sounds interesting.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club Bernard played in to a full house, for Peter Thomas’s programme.

What a turn out. Fair go, the evening was worthy of a public concert.

We are indeed fortunate to have such willing members to get up and give it a whirl.

Lanea and Bruce led the way. It’s super that they can get along now and again. Bruce is sporting a salt and pepper beard, and cowhand hat, and Lanea the perfect back up. Whatever they choose is always entertaining, and Lanea’s new song “Lord it must have been you” was lovely.

We had the men’s vocal group (Audrey’s guys) nice selection lads.

Rose played along with her keyboard. The final piece got away from her somewhat. The keyboard was the boss there.

Peter’s jokes got a laugh. The knickers joke was rock bottom though (lol). Our ever popular accordion group played some super brackets.

Feet were tapping all evening actually.

Irene and Cushla played some delightful duets.

Micheal as usual finds something new in the Tyros, and uses it to good effect. And Hallelujah was very moving.

We seldom double up on our song selections, one had me swallowing a second time, as the men sang “bridle hanging on the wall’ and the accordion group also chose to play it, and each version well done. That song always gets to me. The raffles were all won by some of the performers.

This Saturday we have round 3 of the Brandon Cup. Wilson and Hoppy are sitting on the top of the pile after two rounds. Will one of these chaps hold his nerve, or will we see a late surge from the chasing pack.

Date for your diary. Sunday week 2nd September we have the annual Foodstuffs trophy, when we take on our dear friends from over the bridge. This is a mixed day with everyone’s score counting in an averaged out stableford round. A game filled with decent golf, good camaraderie and great banter. This year it is being held at the Brandon and I believe it is 12 noon meet for 12:30 start. Come along and join in the fun.

This Sunday we have two very different pennants teams on show. We have our glorious Holmes team, expertly lead by Hamish taking on the Tinwald boys in a semi-final down at Levels. Then we have the Rag tag Patterson team lead by General Custer taking on new league leaders Fairlie at Tinwald. The boys still sit last in a 9 team league, but a good win could see them jump up to 6th, oh well 9th it is then. Results next week.

Just two last notes. Kenny Clucas comes of age on Saturday and will be receiving his well-earned government wages, so he has promised to shout the bar after golf, so everyone is welcome, and news on the grapevine is that Hoppy’s infamous golf tour, this year going to North Shore, has picked up two ripe and vulnerable tour virgins. Good luck to Pat Turton and Arkright, it could get messy! Good golfing.

Ashburton Toastmasters The Ashburton Toastmasters club’s August 15 meeting’s theme, presented by Adi as Toastmaster, was “this day in history”. Adi presented throughout the evening titbits and facts about things that happened in the past on August 15.

Robin, as the grammarian, presented the word of the day: “Facilitate”, which got used quite a bit.

Without coordinating between themselves, all three speakers chose topics around mental resilience, from Alanna’s talk about work place programme to care for employee’s mental health-being, through Andy’s talk about mental training to Dan’s excellent icebreaker speech about his son perseverance in sports. All three talks were very inspiring.

Rene’s educational talk was about getting people to engage with the speaker and each other during workplace meetings. Thanks, for some very helpful tips, Rene.

Matt, as a Table topics master, took his cue from today’s teachers strike and presented us a challenge of choosing a random profession and explaining why people in this profession should go on strike. Some very creative, although not always logical, arguments followed. Phil wrapped this up with today’s powerful message from the teachers.

After the break Mercedes, Mark and Luis gave their evaluations (positive and helpful feedback) of the three speakers of the evening, and Rene evaluated our Table topics.

This was followed by grammarian’s and timer’s report.

Due to last minute cancellation we didn’t have memory master, so Adi asked the participants to come up with questions regarding tonight’s speeches.

Phil followed up with a comprehensive general evaluation (evaluating all the roles which haven’t been evaluated by someone else).Matt presented next meeting’s agenda/roles, we had some notices and closed the meeting at 9.20pm.

The Ashburton Garden Club held their monthly meeting on August 16 at the Senior Centre with 27 members present.

Following a short meeting, Audrey Leath, the President, welcomed Daphne Rissman who was our Guest Speaker. The topic was of roses.

Given Daphne has about 800 growing in her own garden, who better to share her knowledge with us. With tips on the correct slant on pruning canes, to cuttings, the best time to planting roses according to the phase of the moon, fertilising when the soil is damp and working around the roses lightly. The best time to fertilise is in September.

Too many hints to mention, but one was that roses like calcium, so when rinsing out the milk bottles, pour the contents around the roses. She has recently returned from attending the World Rose Convention in Copenhagen, with a continuation of her journey to UK and Ireland. It had to have been an awesome experience, given it was high summer and very hot in the Northern Hemisphere, the abundance of glorious rose displays would have been awe inspiring and breathtaking to see.

Ashburton Golf Club We had the fifth and final qualifying round for club champs last Saturday, and a good day found lots of players jostling for position and just trying to make the top 16.

With 3 out of the 4 grades oversubscribed it really did turn into a dog fight. At the end of the day everything was sorted and the draw was finalised, some wonderful matches have turned up and some top golfers have missed the cut.

First round is Saturday week so we will look at the draw a bit more in depth next Thursday. A great well done goes out to Blair Franklin, Richard McKernan, Matt Tait and George Brown for topping their grades and picking up number 1 seedings, and a massive hard luck to two local legends who unfortunately didn’t make the grade. CLUB NEWS Grey Power Ashburton On Monday August 20, President Peter Thomas welcomed 50 plus members to the monthly meeting of Grey Power Ashburton. Peter thanked Margaret for entertaining on the piano whilst members arrived.

Apologies were received from; Colin and Isabel Cameron; Elizabeth Davies; Shona Thomas and Una Green; these were accepted.

Peter advised that in the future the white and yellow page directories would no longer be together and a leaflet was available to explain the changes.

The MSA men’s Choir will hold a remembrance concert to honour 100 years since Armistice day at the Event Centre on the 10th and 11th November.

Federation President Mac Welch has sent a message to the Government that Superannuation is too low. Peter then introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Julia Yoo a law student from Canterbury Law. Canterbury Law gives free legal advice to the community, and visits Ashburton every 2 weeks at Presbyterian Support 215 Tancred Street. Appointments can be made through Presbyterian Support.

Julia then gave a presentation about Enduring Power of Attorney or giving the power to another person to act in your interest with regard to property or personal care and welfare.

She stressed the importance of every one over the age of 18 taking out an EPA, and related an instance where a young person had a motor accident and was in a coma. Her mother from a foreign country transferred money into her daughter’s bank account, came to NZ, and was then unable to access the funds in the account because there was no EPA. There were several interesting questions regarding wills; revoking an EPA; court appointed power of attorney, and the length of time lawyers take to act; trustees rights.

Trevor Gamblin passed a vote of thanks and presented Julia with a fruit tray.

The raffle was dawn and prizes distributed.

The meeting closed at 2.45 and afternoon tea was served.

Next meeting September 17; where the speaker will be Andrew Falloon, National Party Member for Rangitata.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club A strong turnout of 73 members plus 3 visitors were welcomed by President Barry Quantock to our August 21st meeting. A moments silence was

observed for Doug Anderson, a former club President who recently passed away. Two new members, Grant Monroe and Don Smyth were inducted into the club. It was reported that a bus trip is still being planned.

Our mini speaker was John Elms. Born in 1947 John was raised in Hinds and attended Hinds Primary school and Ashburton College. He then took up a building apprenticeship with Anderson and Johnson and eventually went out on his own. John was 24 years in the trade before becoming a sales rep for various hardware and timber merchants. John’s other interests included training thoroughbred horses, achieving some wins in the racing field. He retired 5 years ago.

Roger Lake introduced our guest speaker, Ross Preece, Principal of Ashburton College. Roger grew up in Christchurch and was schooled at Boys High.

After 6 years primary teaching he switched to Secondary teaching and taught in schools in both the North and South Island. He has seen many changes in the education system which is currently undergoing another evolution with the use of computers and I-phones. Future training will focus on creativity, resilience, problem solving and collaboration rather than rote learning.

Ross has also also made two recent trips to China, a country he found no longer fits the stereotype of pollution and poverty. Not only is China modernising rapidly, but is also grappling with some of the same future challenges facing our education system. Bruce Welsh thanked our speaker. Netherby WI Having difficulty cutting your toenails? Read on.

Firstly our President Denise Clark welcomed 26 members plus a prospective member to our August 13 meeting.

She then introduced Mary Harrison from the Ashburton Altrusa Club. They have organised a sixweekly toe nail cutting service which will start on Thursday September 20 in the back of the Hall at St Paul’s church in Oxford Street. Mary explained the procedure taken. She also mentioned that it becomes a bit of a social function as there are many older people out there that are lonely and the only form of touching by another person is at this clinic.

There is no charge, but a donation would be appreciated. You can contact Mary at 308-8347.

Our Roll Call for the month was Coins for Friendship. Happy Birthday was sung to several members.

Raffle was won by Cora Petrie.

Competitions and Sales Table were well supported.

The Moyland trophy was won by Catherine Thomas and the Northchurch trophy by Barbara Burst.

There are a few Mid Canterbury Federation activities coming up:Indoor Bowls on August 31.

Half yearly competition to be held at Wakanui Hall

on October 2.

A walk on September 19 to celebrate 125 years of Women’s Suffrage in NZ. This will start at the Cenotaph on Baring Square West and walk to the Gardens where a camellia will be planted.

Women’s Institute Awareness week October 8 to 14.

Netherby will be holding their own Home Industries Show on September 10. We will finish the day with a Bottle Auction.

Afternoon tea completed the meeting.

Run and Walk Ashburton Our Club has enjoyed another busy week and also welcomed along new walkers and runners. Great to see our membership growing.

Light rain on Tuesday night did not deter the four committed runners and our two youngest members coming out to the sprint session. A little bit of tree climbing for the youngest members in between a round of sprints was enjoyed! Well done to all who could attend.

The Wednesday Walkers had two groups this week.

The first group of five leaving at 5.30pm and the second group of seven half an hour later at 6pm.

Both groups chose the tried and true 5.2km town block. A mild evening and the nights just a little bit lighter were appreciated by all.

Saturday morning 12 early birds met at Frontrunner and headed off down the south side river track.

The morning was crisp, but perfect. A mixture of distances was chosen, with a couple of runners heading out and back for 25minutes, one runner after warming up chose a fast 5km run followed by a cool down, while the rest enjoyed 10km out to the tree and back. One new runner and one new walker welcomed along.

The Afternoon Meet headed to Methven for a hosted run from Forest Drive. Members enjoyed the walkway along the RDR then back through Methven Township, with the walkers completing 10km and the runners approximately 13km. A total of 13 walkers and three runners enjoyed a beautiful warm winter’s day and were made most welcome at Brian and Jenny Senior’s home. Thanks to our hosts this week, our Methven weekend is one we all look forward to. The afternoon meet also welcomed one new runner and one new walker.

Mt Somers faces mountain

Mt Somers have a huge mountain to climb tonight if they’re to make the Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier one final in their first year in existence.

A week ago the premier newcomers were well beaten by this season’s frontrunners Celtic A 37-17, and with the same opposition in front of them in tonight’s semi-finals they face a huge ask to turn that 20-goal deficit around and earn themselves a spot in the final.

Celtic A has not been beaten all season and only a couple of teams have really challenged them. But one of those teams was Mt Somers. When the two sides met in round two, back in June, Celtic A won 29-23 – one of the few times Celtic A had been kept below 30 goals at that point in the season.

The two sides didn’t meet in round one, as Mt Somers only made their first appearance in the top flight in round two, after earning promotion from premier two at the end of the first round.

They only won one match in the second round of premier one, but they did enough to stay in the top flight for the season’s third and final round.

In round three they picked up two wins, against Hampstead A and Celtic B, and got a bonus point off Methven A, which ended up being enough to see them to a top four finish.

It is a huge feat for a team which only comes together once a week.

The bulk of the side has played premier netball in the past and had wanted to make a comeback to the top grade, but with many of them also being busy mums, they didn’t want the added pressure of practising.

So the only practise they do is during their warm-ups on a Thursday night, but it is a formula that has worked for them.

Going on form though, Celtic A will be hard to beat tonight. If they win, they’ll play either the side they beat in the 2017 final, Ashburton College A, or Methven A in next week’s final.

Swimmers in action Six Ashburton swimmers are heading to Christchurch with South Island titles in their sights this weekend. The South Island Swimming Championships are being held in Christchurch, starting tomorrow morning and finishing up on Sunday afternoon.

Six members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton swim team – Bree Middleton 15, Bailey Tait 17, Hannah King 12, Blake Farr 14, Alex Chapman 14 and Mitchell Veix, 13 – will be among those competing.

In all there will be 293 swimmers from 28 swim teams from around the South Island competing, with clubs from as far away as Invercargill, Tasman and the West Coast taking part.

Big haka challenge Enjoy watching a combustible haka challenge? Mark down February 15 in your diary. New Zealand test pair Issac Luke and Adam Blair have delivered some of the more memorable haka on the international sporting stage and can be expected to unleash for the newly-formed New Zealand Maori Kiwis. The veteran Warriors forwards are thrilled by the concept unveiled this week, setting up a pre-season clash in Melbourne against the Australian Indigenous All-Stars.

But the young college side has the advantage of going into the game off a good week, while Methven A go into the game off a surprise loss to Celtic B – the second Celtic side’s first win in the top flight after being promoted from premier two for round three.

Methven A coach Maree Firth said it was disappointing to lose last week and it was a feeling her side wasn’t keen to repeat.

“I think you will see a different team that takes to the court,” Firth said.

On the flip side though, Ashburton College A coach Kaye Kennedy was hoping her side would continue on with last week’s form.

College A notched up a 43-32 win over Kaiapoi High School in Canterbury secondary school netball’s SuperNet competition last Wednesday night, before convincingly beating Hampstead A in the final round of the local premier one competition.

The win secured the young college side a spot in the semi-finals, and denied Hampstead A a top four spot.

For Kennedy, the key for her side was scoring off their own centre pass. Over the past cou-

ple of weeks they’d showed that when they did that, they were capable of amassing big totals.

Methven A and College A will be the first on court tonight at the EA Networks Centre, with their semi-final taking place at 6.30pm, with the game between Celtic A and Mt Somers to follow at 7.30pm.

Hampstead A and Celtic B would also play-off for fifth place at 6.30pm.

In tonight’s premier two semifinals United A will play Celtic C in the 6.30pm game, followed by Southern A and Ashburton College B at 7.30pm, while Methven B and Rakaia A will play off for fifth at 7.30pm.

Try-less Franks to reach test milestone In a perfect world, All Blacks prop Owen Franks would crash over for a try in his 100th test.

The chances are he won’t though.

Despite racking up 99 tests with the world’s best attacking team, burly tighthead Franks has failed to trouble the scorers.

The 30-year-old gets another crack against Australia at Eden Park on Saturday to end rugby’s longest career without registering a point.

Warriors back Peta Hiku looks set to be handed a shot at redemption against Penrith in their critical NRL clash in Auckland. Gerard Beale hasn’t shaken off a hamstring niggle and is unlikely to be cleared for Friday’s match, leaving the door open for Hiku to make his first start in six weeks. Experienced Kiwis centre Hiku could be excused for having nightmares about the Panthers, having endured a shocking evening on defence in round 17 as the Warriors were over-run 34-4 in Sydney. Despite missing seven tackles, Hiku started the next match against Brisbane.

Erakovic to return New Zealand tennis number one Marina Erakovic has contemplated retirement, but has committed to trying to return to the sport in 2019. The 30-year-old Aucklander, who has been ranked as high as 39 in the world, hasn’t played since November last year due to a lower back injury with her ranking having plummeted to 526. Erakovic has decided not to try to return to competitive tennis this year, instead focusing on getting her back 100 per cent right without undergoing surgery.

Taurua committed Noeline Taurua has no plans to leave the Sunshine Coast Lightning, but that’s unlikely to stop her from being unveiled as Silver Ferns coach. Speaking to the media this week, Taurua — who is expected to be named as the 11th Ferns coach in the next two weeks — insisted she would remain at the helm of the Australian club after the Suncorp Super Netball grand final on Sunday. Despite Netball New Zealand’s insistence that it has a shortlist of several “strong candidates” for the job, Taurua is understood to have already agreed to replace Janine Southby.

Winning return for Xpression Showcasing filly Xpression made a winning return to the track at Taupo yesterday when taking out the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1100m).

The last-start Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200m) winner was handled patiently by jockey Sam Collett, sitting off the pace at the rear of the field for the majority of the race after jumping away fairly.

Last season’s premiershipwinning jockey pulled Xpression wide on the turn, with the Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen-trained three-year-old letting down strongly over the closing stages to win by a long head over stakes winner Santa Catarina, with a further half-length back to stablemate Mohaka.

“It was a nice win,” Lowry said.

“She’s been off the scene for nine months and she’s been given plenty of time and seems to have got to the line okay.”

Lowry cited maturity issues and poor track conditions as reasons behind Xpression’s absence from the track.

“There were just a few maturity problems and we didn’t push her,” he said. “I wasn’t that keen to go to Ellerslie or Awapuni the way the tracks were at the time.

Group One-placed three-yearold Sir Nate is poised to make a splash when he resumes in Saturday week’s Listed El Roca Sir Colin Meads Trophy (1200m) at Hastings. A winner of three of his six starts at two, including the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m) at Trentham last spring, Nadeem colt Sir Nate went to the paddock after his third placing in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni in late March.

He resumed with a slashing trial win over 850m at Foxton earlier this month. “He’s come up enormous,” trainer Lisa Latta said.

“We’ve got a lovely team of young horses coming through for spring but he’s at the top of the pile.”

A hat-trick of firsts for trainer, jockeys It was a day of firsts at Taupo on yesterday, with Robert Wellwood securing his first win as a trainer, while apprentices Ashvin Goindasamy and Nik Bakar each rode home their first winners.

Wellwood entered into a training partnership with Roger James at the start of the season and he did not have to wait long to attain his maiden victory as a trainer.

Jockey Cameron Lammas was able to kick home four-year-old mare Dream On to a one and a quarter length victory in the opening race on the card, the Telperion Sprint (1300m).

Wellwood was excited with the win and is looking forward to what could be an exciting spring

“I was pretty happy to get the first win under the belt,” Wellwood said.

“We’ve got a nice team of horses and Roger is really good, I’ve certainly learnt a lot and it’s an exciting future ahead.

“I have been there for about two years now and he said to me earlier in the year would you look at going into partnership. I think we both bring a lot to the partnership and hopefully we have an exciting time ahead for team Kingsclere.

“Roger is very willing to pass on the knowledge as well and that is invaluable. This is the ca-

reer I want to pursue and there is no better man to learn from.”

In the following race it was the turn of apprentice jockey Ashvin Goindasamy to record his first victory.

The 20-year-old was ecstatic when saluting the judge for the first time after riding Cutting up Rough to victory in the Haunui Farm Stallions 1300.

He said the victory was made even sweeter because he was wearing the colours of his riding master, Cambridge trainer Ralph Manning.

“I wanted to get my first win for my boss in these colours, so I am really happy with that,” Goindasamy said.

“I just followed the instructions my boss gave me. The horse kicked out in the last 100m and gave me a really good feeling.

“I just started my career here in New Zealand, it is my first season here, so hopefully I can ride more winners and get more rides.”

Meanwhile, to finish the hattrick of firsts, fellow apprentice Nik Bakar secured his first win in the proceeding race, the Per Incanto Proven 1200, aboard the Jamie Richards-trained Don’tblamethemusic.

“He is an older horse that appreciates a claim and he had a nice draw and Nick gave him a good ride,” Richards said.

Group One-winning filly Seabrook pleased trainer Mick Price in her 800m trial at Cranbourne on Tuesday and will be set to kick-off her spring campaign next month in the Gr.3 McNeil Stakes (1200m).

The New Zealand-bred filly won the Gr.1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) in her last start as a two-year-old and will have the ultimate target of the Gr.1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) this spring. “Seabrook was good (in her trial), it was her second trial at Cranbourne,” Price said. “She’ll now go to the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day to run against the boys, then she’ll go to the Exford Plate at Flemington on September 15.

Grunt’s next target Quality four-year-old O’Reilly entire Grunt will tackle the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on September 1 on his way to a tilt at the Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) in October. Trainer Mick Price said the Gr.1 Australian Guineas (1600m) winner has pulled up well after his fifth-placing in the Gr.2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and believes his charge will need the run. “I’m going to run Grunt in the Memsie Stakes,” Price said.

“He’s pulled up very well and he’s a four-year-old entire, he needs another run I think. He’ll have a run at Caulfield.”

Tauherenikau off The Wairarapa Racing Club’s meeting scheduled to be held at Tauherenikau today has been abandoned due to heavy and consistent rain.

Lazarus shines

Jumps double for Zedeedudadeeko Heavy track conditions at Te Rapa could help star Wairarapa hurdler Zedeedudadeeko shoot for two big prizes this weekend.

The Great Northern Hurdles (4190m) and Wellington Hurdles (3400m) winner is a finalist for jumper of the year at Sunday night’s New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards at Ellerslie and could vie for a racetrack win the previous day if conditions are right.

Tauherenikau trainer Jamie Phillips has Zed 10-year-old Zedeedudadeeko entered for the Corzon Maize Open Hurdle (3200m) at Te Rapa but was look-

ing for the jumper’s preferred testing heavy conditions before confirming a start.

“He won’t start unless it reaches a heavy 11 at some stage during the week,” Phillips said.

Zedeedudadeeko won the Wellington Hurdles at Trentham last month in heavy 11 conditions but was outpaced on a slow 9 track for the Grand National Hurdles (4200m) at Riccarton earlier this month.

“He went well and we were happy enough but it was a slow 9 and he doesn’t operate in those conditions,” Phillips said.

“Isaac [Lupton, jockey] felt he

jumped his way into it but then they increased the speed and got him out of his comfort zone. On heavy 11 tracks, he’s never out of his comfort zone. He loves the deep stuff and because of that I wasn’t expecting anything on the better track at Riccarton.”

Phillips is unsure what to expect at Te Rapa, which has seldom played like a true heavy 11 track in recent years, but wants to keep Zedeedudadeeko in prime condition to defend his Great Northern crown should suitable conditions present next month.

“I thought he wouldn’t run in the Northern because the track

would be too good but we’d look silly if it came up a heavy 11 and he wasn’t there,” Phillips said.

“He’s very bright. He looks great and the racing doesn’t worry him. He came back from the South Island well and hasn’t left a feed.”

So what about Zedeedudadeeko’s prospects of winning jumper of the year?

“They normally go for the top steeplechaser but he’s probably got similar credentials to Wise Men Say. He won the Northern by 10 1/2 lengths. He deserves to be there on what he’s achieved and that’s a credit to the horse.”

Lazarus to tackle Canadian Derby The next step for champion racehorse Lazarus has been confirmed with connections of the two-time New Zealand Trotting Cup winner making a US$40,000 payment for him to race in the Canadian Pacing Derby. The Kiwi star will take to the track for an elimination of the Derby at Woodbine this weekend, looking to follow up his remarkable American debut victory with another success for trainer, Jimmy Takter. Woodbine Communications confirmed that the owners of Lazarus, who was purchased out of New Zealand for reportedly more than $4 million, had made the payment by deadline time on Monday and he was all clear to take to the track again.

COUNSELL, Lorna Evelyn – Passed away peacefully at Princes Court Resthome Ashburton on August 21, 2018. Surrounded by family.

Dearly loved wife of the late Colin. Loved mum of Sheryl, Paul and Rose, Sue and the late Tom Martin, Jill and Murray Burrowes, Barbara and Sam, Mick and Dawn, Alli and special friend of Simon Banks. Messages to the Counsell Family, PO Box 472, Ashburton 7740.

Ashburton College’s A boys’ basketball team thrashed Cathedral College on Tuesday night to nail a spot in the final of the Canterbury secondary schools’ Thomson Trophy division two competition.

The team had home court advantage for their semi-final at the EA Networks Centre and came away with a resounding victory 102-56, with the result never really looking in doubt after a strong start saw them out to a considerable lead early on.

Ashburton College coach Brian Kerr said his side applied their full court zone press this week, and got it right.

“The pressure they created

caused numerous turnovers and they raced out to an early 9-2 lead before a time out was called by Cathedral,” Kerr said.

But that did nothing to stop the onslaught as the defensive intensity was relentless, and by the end of the first quarter College led 29–7.

The second quarter continued in the same vein and while finishing let the home side down at times, they were still dominant and went to halftime 51–20 ahead.

The speed of the game increased in the third and it became more open as Cathedral attempted to get back into the game, but College was able to match that challenge and extended its lead further to 77-38.

At the end of a helter-skelter fourth quarter, where both teams enjoyed the open style of play, College had well and truly sealed it, 102–56.

Kerr said his players were a lot more clinical in their approach this week.

“We’d talked about the need to get our zone press right and put on that early pressure, which we did.

“I think we’d almost taken the game away after the first quarter, however we needed to maintain that intensity with our defence, which the boys did for most of the game.”

Kerr said his side’s fast break was again good, and was allowed to function as a result of their de-

fence.

“Our offensive structure worked pretty well when the break wasn’t on. It allowed good options whether it was shooting from the perimeter, forcing the ball inside or driving to the basket,” Kerr said.

“The whole team deserve a pat on the back. Some of the guys did a lot of grunt work defensively which allowed us to ignite our fast break.”

The guard lineup of Marc Juntilla (26 points), Quinn Ritchie (22 points) and Sam Pearce (16 points) were relentless in their defensive work and created many turnovers.

Fotu Hala (12 points) played well, especially on the defensive end where he was able to pick off a lot of loose passes as a result of the pressure exerted up front by the guards.

Phoenix Andrew (9 points) was another to shine. Coming off the bench he took his opportunity and was particularly strong on the drive to the basket and was defensively sound.

Kerr said the game was a good confidence booster heading into next week’s final against Papanui High School, who upset the favoured St Thomas’ at home on Tuesday night, 81-78.

The final will be played in Christchurch, at Cowles Stadium, next Tuesday at 4pm.
