Teams of professional shoplifters are targeting Ashburton but retailers are banding together to stop them. Police say the shoplifters are stealing to order, including televisions, electrical appliances and clothing and retailers need to report every incident or theft. Community constable Mark Dryland said about 65 people, including many retailers, attended a meeting in Ashburton on Monday to talk about how to stop or limit shoplifting and disorderly be-
haviour in shops. Retailers and shop assistants who suspected theft should ring 111 if the offenders were still in store; if the theft was discovered on security film later, it should still be reported. Dryland said shoplifting cost the country $1 billion a year and police had units dedicated to stopping it. Earlier this month police executed two search warrants at addresses in Aranui, Christchurch, as part of an investigation into an organised shoplifting crime group operating in wider Canterbury, in-
cluding Ashburton. Four people were arrested and a large number of stolen items were located, as well as an illegal firearm, ammunition and methamphetamine. Three women and a 15-year-old boy are facing shoplifting and aggravated robbery charges. This will take the number of charges the group is facing to more than 130 between them.
