Five GPs offer free visits

Five Mid Canterbury general practices have opted to offer free doctors’ visits to children under the age of 13, with the other two likely to make a decision within the next week.

The move to extend the age range of free doctors’ visits and prescriptions from children aged under six to children

aged under 13 was confirmed by Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and ACC Minister Nikki Kaye in February.

Originally the Government pledged to make doctors’ visits free for all children under the age of 13, but the Green Party has obtained documents stating that only 90 per cent of visits would be funded.

As a result, Dr Coleman is

now advising parents to “shop around” for a GP until they find one that does not charge.

Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation (RCPHO) chief executive Bill Eschenbach yesterday confirmed that the PHO was working with its Mid Canterbury practices, to see where they stood on offering the free visits.

“We’ve got a survey out to the

practices at the moment just to see who is going to opt in and we are trying to summarise it at the moment,” he said.

As far as the PHO was concerned, it would like all practices to opt in but it was an individual practice decision, he said.

Mr Eschenbach said four practices so far had responded from within the district, confirming they will opt in and the

PHO was now working with the other two practices to see where they stood.

The partners of those two practices were currently on leave, Mr Eschenbach said, but he expected to have their responses within the next week.

Invercargill teacher Alysha, one of the stars vying for the heart of a man on the TV3 reality show, last night admitted to The Bachelor Art Green that she was still legally married to her ex. She told Woman’s Day the admission was “a huge weight” off her shoulders.

Auckland lawyer Danielle Beston, another contestant on the show, was also revealed to have been married. She is embroiled in a High Court civil case with her estranged husband.

Alysha, 26, told Woman’s Day she was waiting for the right moment to tell Green.

“The big question for me was ‘When do I tell him?’” she said.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery – in full dress uniform – rode their horses past Buckingham Palace in the sunshine en route to Hyde Park to stage a 41-gun royal salute using six World War One-era 13-pounder Field Guns at midday. Before the King’s Troop arrived in Hyde Park, the Band of the Royal Artillery played a selection of celebratory music close to the firing position, as crowds gathered to watch the annual display.

The Queen, who is waiting to see if her fifth great-grandchild makes an appearance on her birthday, is spending the day privately at Windsor Castle.

Rare moth rediscovered A rare species of native moth – unseen in New Zealand for almost 20 years – has been found in Katikati. Landcare Research scientist Robert Hoare was “sweeping” a butterfly net through bush when he discovered the elusive Thambotricha vates moth, which was last caught by his predecessor, John Dugdale, in Taranaki in 1996. “I was quite excited,” said Mr Hoare, an Auckland-based arthropod scientist. “I looked in the net to see what was there and I saw this sort of, bright, bright brownish moth at the bottom of the net, and because of it’s unusual shape I was able to recognise it pretty much immediately.” There is no common name for the Thambotricha vates moth yet, but Mr Hoare has named the rare species wonder-haired prophet, which is a translation from the moth’s latin name.

The “wonder-haired” name stems from the unusually long hairs at the end of the moth’s feelers. The moth was small, measuring about 1.5cm across the wings, he said. Although the native moth had not been spotted for 20 years, it did not mean the species was close to extinction. “We never thought it was extinct, it’s just one of those things that’s just really, really elusive and hard to come across.” he said. Only about 15 Thambotricha vates moths have been caught since it was discovered in 1922.

100-carat diamond sells for $28.57m A “perfect” 100-carat diamond originally mined in South Africa has sold for $US22.1 million ($NZ28.57 million) in New York in just three minutes of bidding.

Sotheby’s had valued the jewel, which weighs 100.20 carats, at $US19 to $US25 million, calling it “the largest perfect diamond with a classic emerald cut ever to be offered at auction”. Discovered in the De Beers mines of South Africa then cut, polished and perfected for more than a year, it was the highlight in 370 lots at a Sotheby’s jewellery auction. The winning bidder took part by telephone but wanted to remain anonymous, Sotheby’s said. The auction house had showcased the jewel twice in the Middle East – in Doha and Dubai – as well as Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London and New York to attract interest ahead of the sale.

Sotheby’s says only five comparable quality diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have been sold at auction, the most expensive of which fetched $US30.6 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in 2013.

Facebook habits revealed Two and a half million Kiwis use Facebook every month, it has been revealed for the first time. The first statistical breakdown of how New Zealanders use the social media service was revealed in Auckland yesterday.

Called Kiwis on Facebook, the presentation showed 1.9 million Kiwis used Facebook each day, on an average of 14 times per day.

Head of Facebook New Zealand, Spencer Bailey, said it was the first piece of inmarket research revealed here. A Facebook spokeswoman said insights were typically only given in larger markets, but the business was expanding its investment here.

In the past, New Zealand was usually included with Australian statistics so the information was a unique snapshot of Kiwis online activity. About a dozen representatives from digital media organisations attended the event in central Auckland. Globally, 1.4 billion people were on Facebook.

Air plan sparks concern

While the proposed Environment Canterbury air plan might be strong on intent, red flags should be raised over some of its content, says Ashburton District councillor and farmer Alan Totty.

He is part of a local working party that has taken a long, hard look at the plan and found several areas where what is proposed could significantly impact on both farmers and people living in urban areas.

The rules around stubble burning are about to get a whole lot tighter, with a new limit placed on where burning can occur. A five kilometre buffer zone has been imposed around all towns and villages in the district and any farmer wanting to burn crop residue within that would have to apply for a resource consent.

“One of the concerns with this is how much it will cost and the time involved,” he said.

Currently farmers are required to have a smoke management plan in place and there are rules in place around weather conditions when stubble burning occurs. Adding a resource consent to the mix will be quite punitive for the large number of farmers who have property within five kilometres of an urban area, Mr Totty said.

The working party also raised concerns over a new rule that bans the burning of vegetation within 200 metres of a ‘sensitive’ area.

“That’s pretty subjective, it could just be the house next door,” he said.

The flames and smoke generated by a stubble burn are a common sight around the Ashburton District during autumn, but burning stubble in some parts of the district could be more difficult under Environment Canterbury’s proposed air plan.

When it began replacing logburners older than 15 years, Mr Totty said there were issues around the additional requirement for all burners installed after 2019 to be ultra-low emission.

“These are currently very expensive. We’re saying to ECan, that this is okay but we don’t want people having to pay three times the amount for one of these. It could be quite punitive.”

The proposed air plan con-

tains the objectives, policies and rules relating to discharges from a wide range of activities, including: outdoor burning; industrial, trade and large scale discharges; rural discharges; and space heating (including home heating).

“We have a lot of concerns about the details, how these will be interpreted,” Mr Totty said.

Environment Canterbury has a statutory responsibility to manage air quality and meet national health-based targets

to ensure people have cleaner, healthier air to breathe.

Ashburton has been identified as an area where discharge from home fires is the major contributor to air pollution.

This has meant over the past few years many home owners in urban Ashburton and Tinwald have been required to install new, low emission logburners.

The council is preparing a submission on the plan in which it will raise several areas of concern.

NZ citizen killed in Iraq rocket attack

By ISaac DavISoN aND HarrISoN cHrIStIaN A New Zealand citizen has been killed in an Isis (Islamic State) rocket attack after he returned to Iraq to fight for the country’s civilian army.

The Hawke’s Bay family of Kadhem Chilab Abbas, 42, a refugee who settled in Napier in 2003, say he was killed instantly after a rocket attack on his car on Friday in the Iraqi city of Tikrit. The attack reportedly killed three others.

Mr Abbas’ daughter Hanan Kadhem Chilab, 24, said her father had returned to Iraq in June last year to volunteer for a civilian army in the fight against the extremist Islamist group.

“He was our hero,” Ms Hanan

Chilab said. “He went there to save the families who were in the battlefield, women and children.

“He was just a normal New Zealander. He was our father.

He had an injured leg [from a gunshot wound]. But because the president gave a call to all of the Iraqi people ... he signed up and said he wanted to go and fight against the Isis,” she said.

Mr Abbas leaves behind 24 children – 12 in Iraq, 12 in New Zealand – including a five-month-old daughter he has never met.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mfat) was unable to confirm any details about the incident, saying it had not been approached by family members.

A spokeswoman said: “Given there is no New Zealand diplo-

matic presence in Syria or Iraq, the ability of the Government to assist New Zealand citizens requiring consular assistance there is severely limited.”

MFAT was advising against all travel to both countries.

On Tuesday, in the family’s bustling Napier home, a portrait of Mr Abbas stood in the living room, surrounded by burning incense. His 14 family members cried as they watched video footage of his funeral in Iraq.

Daughters Hanan Khadem Chilab and Wjdan Khadem Chilab said he was due to return to New Zealand to visit his family just two days before his death. A relative called them early on Saturday morning to say he had been killed. It was Wjdan’s 23rd birthday.

“They said to me, ‘your dad’s dead’. I didn’t believe him,” said Wjdan. “We opened the army’s Facebook page and there were messages saying peace be upon him, he is martyred.”

The family’s loss comes after New Zealand-born Karolina Dam, now living in Denmark, revealed this week her son Lukas had been killed after travelling to Syria to fight for the Islamic State.

The Government has urged New Zealanders not to join either side of the conflict in Iraq and Syria. But while it has spoken of sanctions for “foreign fighters” when they returned to New Zealand, it is not clear whether these penalties would apply to New Zealanders who fought against Isis.

Prime Minister John Key has apologised to an Auckland waitress who accused him of harassment and bullying after he pulled on her pony-tail on repeated occasions.

In an anonymous article on the left-wing website The Daily Blog, the waitress said Mr Key behaved like a “schoolyard bully” when visiting her unnamed cafe in the past six months. She said he later apologised by giving her two bottles of wine.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister confirmed that Mr Key had apologised to the woman.

“It’s a familiar cafe which he regularly visits with Bronagh and both have a good relationship with those who work there,” the spokeswoman said.

“His actions were intended to be light-hearted. It was never his intention to make her feel uncomfortable and he has apologised to her.”

The waitress kept the wine because she wanted evidence of his apology.

“John seemed to think that his job demanded less professionalism than that of a waitress, yet he’s the one that’s running our entire country. I’m telling this story because I’m the only one who can and it seems he needs reminding that he’s not a god, he’s just a man.”

GPs offer free visits From P1

Methven Medical Centre GP Dr John McGettigan confirmed yesterday that Methven, which operates within the Pegasus Health PHO, would also be adopting the change and would offer free doctors’ visits to children under the age of 13.

Currently, doctors’ visits are free for children under the age of six at around 98 per cent of the practices in New Zealand.

Dr Coleman confirmed that when the policy was introduced the uptake was not immediate.

“Initial uptake was 70 per cent in January 2008, and it has steadily increased to current levels. There are only around 12 general practices in New Zealand that are not offering free under sixes doctor visits,” he said.

ACC Minister Nikki Kaye said she expected the uptake of GPs providing free injury related visits to under 13s to steadily increase over time in a similar fashion.

The service will be phased out over the next 12 to 18 months.

could be eligible for assistance through Work and Income New Zealand, said its regional community liaison Amanda Cook.

Plunket’s car seat service was launched in 1981, when research showed that only around 20 per cent of children were properly restrained when travelling in cars. The success of the service can be measured in Ministry of Transport data that showed last year, 93 per cent of children under five travelled in car seats.

Difficult battle ahead for Rudd Embattled AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd will face a difficult battle to escape conviction on charges he on Tuesday pleaded guilty to, legal experts say.

What had been set down as a judgealone trial in the Tauranga District Court took a surprise turn when the veteran rocker admitted to threatening to kill a former employee, as well as possession of cannabis and methamphetamine.

A second charge of threatening to kill was also dropped by police, who last year dramatically withdrew a charge of attempting to procure a murder the day after it was laid against the 60-year-old.

Judge Robert Wolff remanded Rudd on bail to re-appear for sentencing on June 26, when an application for discharge without conviction – to be opposed by the Crown – will be heard.

It will not be the first time the highprofile Tauranga resident has attempted to avoid conviction.

In 2007, he escaped a conviction after pleading guilty to common assault following an incident on his luxury launch, on the grounds it would hurt his career.

Five years later, he succeeded in avoiding a cannabis conviction, which he argued would have stopped him from continuing to tour with AC/DC. - NZME

Police notebook A Havelock Street business was broken into in the early hours of yesterday morning. Police inquiries are under way.

- A jewellery box and perfume were stolen from a car parked on East Street overnight on Monday.

The Ashburton District Council has come under fire for allegedly dragging its feet over replacing a flagpole at the Rakaia Cemetery.

However council staff say while it will be in place in time for Anzac Day, the council had no obligation to provide a flagpole for the cemetery. About 10 years ago a flagpole was installed at the cemetery by the RSA. Three years later it became apparent the flagpole was broken, and it was removed by the council.

A temporary replacement was erected by a member of the community in the interim while a new flagpole was sought.

A Rakaia woman, who does not wish to be

named, says council staff have promised to have the flagpole up in time for Anzac Day each year since it was first taken down.

However, each year the commemorations have come and gone and no flagpole has arrived.

The woman was angry over what she considered a lack of respect by the council.

“To me that’s part of history, it’s part of respect, these RSA people were extremely proud and they worked hard,” she said.

However, council open spaces manager David Askin said the council had no responsibility to provide a new flagpole for the cemetery.

Despite that, the council had decided to replace it and he believed it would be in place in time for Anzac Day on Saturday.

The son of Christchurch’s infamous Black Widow has narrowly avoided jail for possessing a gun he claimed was to protect him from his mother. Adam Kearns, the son of convicted murderer Helen Milner, appeared in Christchurch District Court yesterday. He earlier pleaded guilty to a representative charge of selling the class A drug cannabis, possession of cannabis, and unlawful possession of a gun.

Judge David Saunders accepted his disturbing upbringing had led him into a life of crime, but that was no longer a licence to flout the law. He sentenced him to eight months of home detention, 150 hours of community work, and ordered him to undertake psychological assistance.

Kearns, 23, was arrested in an armed raid in the east of Christchurch in November after police suspected he was dealing drugs.

Changes have been made to Dunedin policing after the deaths of Bradley and Ellen Livingstone.

Dunedin police failed Katharine Webb and her children Bradley, 9, and Ellen, 6, the Southern district’s top policeman acknowledged yesterday during the second day of the inquest into the deaths of the children and their father, Edward Livingstone.

Southern District commander Superintendent Andrew Coster said changes had been made after the deaths to the way Southern police handled cases of family violence and adult sexual assault.

Livingstone shot Bradley and Ellen in their beds on January 15, 2014, in the St Leonards home the children shared with their mother. In the months before the death, Livingstone had twice breached a

court-ordered protection order preventing him from contacting Ms Webb.

Police granted Livingstone diversion for the first of those offences, against national policy. Following that mistake, a national audit was conducted and uncovered six occasions when diversion was granted for protection order breaches.

Supt Coster had overseen changes as a result of the audit.

Preparations in full swing in Gallipoli

By AnnA LeAsk in GALLipoLi With just three days until the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings, preparations for commemorative ceremonies at the Gallipoli Peninsula are in full swing.

The New Zealand Herald spent most of the day on the peninsula on Tuesday and as the hours passed, the mammoth Anzac Day makeover advanced further.

Sites which are usually bare but for memorials were swarming with teams of construction and technical workers who have been tasked with preparing the areas for the 10,500 attendees and VIPs. Thousands of red plastic seats have been erected in stands where the dawn service will be held – the Anzac Commemorative Site.

Seating is also in place at Lone Pine for the official Australian service and Chunuk Bair for the New Zealand commemoration.

Centre stages are also in place, surrounded by sound and lighting equipment, and big screens were positioned yesterday to ensure all attendees get a clear view of proceedings on Saturday.

Thousands of metres of temporary fencing and portable toilets have been trucked to the peninsula and were being moved into place during the day.

The peninsula will be closed down on Friday morning for a security sweep and the roads will not be open to anyone after that. But on Tuesday tour buses and heavy machinery including diggers and forklifts were nose to tail as a mixture of visitors

and workers flocked to the area.

It is likely those visiting on Tuesday will not be at Saturday’s commemorations, which are for ballot pass holders, VIPs and dignitaries only.

Construction was not the only thing increasing – the presence of police and camouflage-clad troops intensified and by late afternoon there were hundreds of gendarmerie, the local police, milling around the commemorations sites.

Officials are also working hard to ensure the day goes off without a hitch.

It is understood an alternative weather plan was also being put in place. The services will all go ahead rain or shine, however if inclement weather hits the peninsula it is understood a number of shelters will be put in place in some areas.

An Ashburton artist has donated one of her works to the Ashburton RSA, just in time for Anzac Day. The piece, entitled Lest We Forget, was painted by Robin Arnst who said it began as a protest piece to try and save the Ashburton Railway Station, however, it seemed appropriate now with Anzac Day and the Gallipoli centenary to gift the painting to the RSA. At the time the artwork was created Mrs Arnst had found out one of her neighbours departed for war from the Ashburton Railway Station and went on to find out more information about the other soldiers who had also left from there.

“This painting evolved on its own, taking idea after idea and forming the story, thus creating a picture,” she said.

The painting depicts two soldiers walking in front of a steam train, and on the left, their returning spirits are visible.

In the right hand corner an eye shedding a tear is visible. The eye reflects the image of a soldier leaving his sweetheart behind as she waves to him with love, Mrs Arnst said.

The carriage is set to depart with the young men on board, and at the centre of the painting is a band playing, while a woman walks away with her head and shoulders down, realising her son may not be coming home. The poppy and the words ‘lest we forget’ continue the message, Mrs Arnst said.

When the sun rises on Ashburton’s Baring Square cenotaph on Anzac Day it will rise on a sea of white crosses, each cross representing a man from the Ashburton District who fought and died in World War One. More than 500 crosses were assembled, painted and inscribed with each soldier’s name, rank and serial number and these have been placed alongside war memorials around the district, a sombre reminder of an event that took place 100 years ago, costing thousands of young New Zealanders their lives.

The white cross project was created to give descendants of those soldiers an opportunity to ‘buy’ their cross. Others have been sold to individuals and businesses wanting to have personal involvement in marking the Gallipoli campaign centennial.

As New Zealand marks the centenary of the Allied landings on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula, Ashburton RSA president Maurice Baker said Ashburton’s Anzac observances have been tailored to recognise the significance of this year’s event.

probing the early morning darkness.

The 9am service at the Ashburton Cemetery will feature the Ashburton MSA men’s choir leading hymn singing but the most significant changes have been kept for the 11am civic service, Mr Baker said.

“We’re anticipating our parade will be quite a bit bigger this year and we’re having a display of tanks and army machinery over on the green, but probably the most significant thing will be the three-gun salute,” he said.

This year’s parade will also be boosted by the addition of several horses, representing the role mounted troops played in the war.

The parade from St Andrew’s Church into Baring Square will be completed by 11am and on the first strike of the town clock counting the hour, a big gun will fire.

The white crosses were planted in Baring Square by members of the Compulsory Military Training association. They will be removed in the days after Anzac Day but will be placed back by the square’s cenotaph each Anzac Day until the centenary of the war’s end on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, is marked.

Tidying up the Methven Cemetery has become a long-term job for Methven Community Board members.

There has been only slow progress since board members earlier this year expressed their frustration with the Ashburton District Council not cleaning

At their six-weekly meeting this week, board members decided they would put in a submission to the Ashburton District Council’s long-term plan for funding of the work.

cil open spaces manager David Askin had reported to members that there was no budget available at this time to fully tidy the area as requested.

Members wanted some of the weedy undergrowth and fallen trees from the area cleaned out, and a town businessman had offered to pay for replanting with rhododendrons and other

shrubs. Members also sought information from Mr Askin on how cleaning of the cemetery gates was going.

“It’s probably a half-hour job to be honest,” member Dan McLaughlin said.

Mr Askin said he would follow it up to see how community workers were going with the job.

■ WHEELS WEEK

Investigation into death Police have confirmed an investigation is under way into the death of teenager Matthew Gunter at Grey Base hospital.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday the investigation had begun but declined to comment further.

Matthew “Matt” Gunter died in November 2012 from a brain injury caused by a lack of blood flow and oxygen while he was recovering from emergency surgery.

The teenager from Greymouth had had his appendix removed at his home-town hospital. After surgery, he had a “laryngospasm”, in which the vocal cord muscles tighten, closing the airway. The lungs keep sucking and the negative pressure pulls fluid into them.

Matt was on supplemental oxygen overnight in Grey Base Hospital’s children’s ward. The sole nurse turned off his oxygen saturation level monitoring machine at 5am – as she had to attend to another patient – and did not assess him again until 6.30am, when she found him in respiratory arrest. He died three days later.

She is also a past president of the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers. Leader Winston Peters held a press conference in Invercargill yesterday and confirmed Ms Bond would enter Parliament.

Finetuning Wheels Week festivities The people behind Ashburton’s Wheels Week met this week to finetune this year’s programme of events.

This year is the event’s 25th anniversary and to mark the occasion, the organising team has invited speedway racer and legendary golf caddy Steve Williams to town. Mr Williams will speak at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on May 6.

Originally the wheels festival ran over just one week but now it extends over two weeks, from May 1–17, with events scheduled every day.

In advance of the event’s launch with the traditional Ashburton Vintage Car Club swap meet on May 2, a church service with a wheeled theme will be held at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday at 10am.

President of the organising committee, Ross Butterick, said Wheels Week had become a signature event for the Ashburton District, but ensuring its year-on-year success relied not just on the groups who took part but also on the willingness of sponsors to be involved.

Malaysia Airlines has apologised to its passengers after one of its flights was delayed for 24 hours.

This comes after passengers boarded Malaysia Airlines Flight 130, from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur, about 1pm on Tuesday.

The flight was due to leave Auckland at 1.15pm, but due to an engineering requirement, it was delayed, and passengers were trapped on the plane, on the tarmac, for three hours until they were eventually off-loaded.

Town like ‘war zone’ Grave fears are held for two people missing after their car was swept away in rising floodwaters in the Hunter region of NSW, caused by days of torrential rain. The downpour has come with buffeting winds that have lashed Sydney and surrounding regions.

A severe weather warning also remained in place for the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, while residents in some parts of Milperra in the southwestern suburbs were ordered to evacuate after the Georges River broke its banks.

As authorities yesterday advised that the worst was over, stories from some of the worsthit areas continued to emerge, with the town of Dungog where three people were killed and homes washed away described as a “war zone”.

confirmed the town, north of Newcastle, would be declared a natural disaster zone.

In Maitland, there were grave fears for two people, including an elderly woman, who were in a car that was swept into Wallis Creek along Cessnock Road at about 9am as witnesses watched on in horror.

“We’ve got a general idea where that vehicle is but we are unable to get it due to the rising water,” NSW Police’s Inspector Brian Tracey said.

Police divers had been sent to the scene.

Three people from a second car were rescued at the same location, while a mother and her baby were also saved from rising floodwaters in Maitland.

There were also unconfirmed reports of people missing at Schofields in Sydney’s west, with an SES boat deployed near

the corner of Grange Avenue and Carnarvon Road.

Mr Baird yesterday urged people in the worst-hit areas to “hang tough”, confirming Dungog, bucketed with 300 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, along with Maitland and parts of the Central Coast, would be declared natural disaster zones.

Helicopters had been dispatched to assess the damage.

“Clearly at the moment, with the storm easing, we’re beyond that and what’s going to be the key focus is getting our communities back on their feet,” Mr Baird said.

“To give you a sense of the size and scope - in Dungog there’s more rain that has come down in the last 24 hours than they have seen in a 24-hour period for the past century.”

The comments came as the three people killed in Dungog,

trapped in their residences after a flash flood swept through the town on Tuesday morning, were named as Colin Webb, 79, Brian Wilson, 72 and Robin MacDonald, 68.

Superintendent Greg Rankin, from Fire and Rescue NSW, said there were now just “pillars where houses used to stand”.

As of last night, more than 225,000 homes were without power. Almost 100 people had been rescued from floodwaters, while emergency services had responded to more than 10,000 calls for help since Monday.

So far there have been more than 19,500 insurance claims across the state. The damage bill is already estimated to be $129 million.

In Sydney, easing conditions meant ferries were able to resume service between Circular Quay and Manly.

Ferry to be raised The South Korean government will raise the wreck of the Sewol ferry, one year after it sank with the loss of more than 300 lives, most of them school children. The Ministry of Public Safety and Security said the salvage operation would likely begin in September, off the southwestern island of Jindo, where the Sewol sank on April 16 last year. The 6825-tonne vessel lies 40 metres down on the sea bed and bringing it to the surface will be technically challenging.

The ministry estimated the cost at somewhere between $US90 million ($NZ117m) and $US140 million and said the operation could take as long as one-and-ahalf years.

Air campaign ends The military coalition led by Saudi Arabia has ended its campaign of airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi rebels, claiming it as a success.

Coalition spokesman Ahmed Asiri said yesterday that Operation Decisive Storm had eliminated the heavy weapons and ballistic missiles held by the mainly Shi’ite Houthis and allied military units.

It would be replaced from today by a new operation codenamed Restore Hope, Asiri said. The new operation would focus on preventing the movement of Houthi militias, protecting civilians, and supporting aid and relief efforts, he said.

Jail term for Morsi The United States has expressed its concern after an Egyptian court sentenced Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi and 14 of his supporters to hefty jail terms. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Washington would “review the basis” for the court’s decision to imprison Morsi for 20 years and was “concerned by these sentences”. “All Egyptians are entitled to equal and fair treatment before the law,” she added. Morsi was convicted of ordering the arrest and torture of demonstrators involved in clashes in 2012 when he was still Egypt’s elected president.

Italy boat disaster captain to be charged The Tunisian captain of the migrant boat in which 800 people are feared to have drowned is set to be charged with mass murder over the disaster.

Prosecutors in the Sicilian city of Catania said yesterday they believed Mohammed Ali Malek, 27, was responsible for steering mistakes and the reckless overcrowding which led to the horrifying shipwreck off Libya.

He will appear before a judge tomorrow along with crew member and Syrian national Mahmud Bikhit, 25, who was also arrested in a probe into

a catastrophe that has evoked chilling comparisons with the slave trade and allegations of callous disregard on the part of European governments.

The captain was questioned by investigators yesterday after being arrested on suspicion of multiple homicide, causing a shipwreck and aiding illegal immigration. Bikhit faces potential charges on the latter count.

Hundreds of the victims, including an unknown number of children, will have died in hellish circumstances having been locked in the hold or the middle deck of the 20-metre

boat which keeled over in pitch darkness after colliding with a Portuguese container ship answering its distress call.

The Catania prosecutors said the collision had been caused by steering mistakes by the captain and the panicked movements of the hundreds of passengers.

“On the basis of what has emerged, no blame can be accorded to the crew of the merchant ship which came to rescue and in no way contributed to the fatal event,” they said in a statement.

Prosecutors said the survivors had told them how they

had been held for up to a month in disused factories in Libya before being packed onto the boat.

One man was beaten severely with sticks as punishment from moving away from the group to answer a call of nature, according to survivor’s statement.

The UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said the horror at sea had been produced by a “monumental failure of compassion” on the part of European governments who are now under intense pressure to address the humanitarian crisis on their southern shores.

If the timing is right he could even meet his new baby nephew or niece. Harry’s older brother, Prince William, and his wife Kate are expecting their second child any day now. Prince Harry will head home to present medals at the London marathon on Sunday after attending multiple World War One anniversary services on the Gallipoli peninsula tomorrow and Saturday. At Gallipoli he’ll join his father, Prince Charles, at international and Commonwealth services on April 24, as well as the Australian and New Zealand commemorations on April 25. After Saturday’s centenary services Prince Harry will return to the UK with the Prince of Wales.

id Canterbury parents and general practitioners deserve better from an election promise that they would reasonably have expected to benefit many local children.

They deserve to know the government was not electioneering when it promised free GP visits for children under the age of 13 and that the policy will be evenly applied.

Because by yesterday, it seemed clear that the electiontime slogan that supported online advertising campaigns should have taken the time to explain some visits might not be free. It emerged ACC Minister Nikki Kaye did not sign away enough of a subsidy to ensure ACC injury-related visits were as free as other categories of visits.

Officials advised a $24 topup would provide coverage for 90 per cent of injured children under 13 but that the rest would still have to pay something themselves.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says he is still advising parents that under 13s are free but that they should shop around if they are worried about any additional payments.

This has been manna from heaven for opposition parties, which – rightly – say the government did not campaign on a “90 per cent free” promise during the election. They say the government is pinching pennies and that harried parents will be forced to take their injured children from practice to practice, away from their family doctor, to find a free consultation.

This possibly unrealistic scenario might be avoided where parents follow Mr Coleman’s advice and their local district health board which practices have signed up to the Cost of Treatment Regulations scheme.

ACC advice was that some GPs might offer free visits to retain clients but that, before the subsidy was confirmed, there was no evidence this would happen.

Mid Canterbury GPs are in businesses – albeit a selfless and caring business – and they need to derive an income that makes their business work. It is unreasonable to expect them to subsidise a government promise, just as it is unreasonable to expect parents to shop around when trying to help their injured child.

One article with the title Chasing the greatest story.

Let me tell you my story of 100 per cent. My story is 100 per cent because my well is DRY. Along with many other

friends and colleagues of mine in the district.

All I hear is how amazing our district is with our farming community, water usage and how everybody is working together to create opportunities.

If this is the case then why are so many of our private wells going dry?

How come our waterways have no water in them?

Why has Forest and Bird and DOC been running around all summer saving various aquatic species? Why do we have water restrictions every year because of water shortage in council wells?

And why does nobody care about us?

As a species our main necessities are water and air to survive so the questions seem pretty simple to me.

Maybe our managers and government advisors should be changing the questions we are asking to ‘How can we ensure clean water and air to all species?’, not just to a select few.

Here is a suggestion for Mr [Ashburton Museum director Michael] Hanrahan, spend some time researching homes and properties who have no water because of dry wells.

That will give you a true perspective on our irrigation fascination.

s we acknowledge the centenary of Gallipoli, the arguments as to its ultimate influence over New Zealand rage on. Was it really the occasion when “we came of age as a nation”?

Were the hideous sacrifices involved made for a genuinely “noble cause” or were our soldiers simply being used by the British to do some of their very dirtiest work for them in attempting to shore up the crumbling foundations of the Empire?

Was it therefore more of a battle between the British and French Empires on the one hand against the would-be German and the erratic Russians on the other in which we and the Australians – and a number of other lowly lights – were the bit – and readily expendable – players?

Where Britain went, we followed, to our enormous, disproportional cost. There was never any doubt we would do anything else.

Were we then also at the behest of potty, over-indulged – and overweight – generals who sat in their well-appointed messes far behind the lines dispatching thousands of men to certain death before ordering another gin and tonic from the uniformed mess waiter, and then turning-in to their luxurious sleeping quarters?

And so on ... there’s a lot more to be found in that cynical vein, most of it entirely untrue, however much it may still be believed.

C-in-C at Gallipoli, for example, General Sir Ian Hamilton, was one of the proven bravest and most experienced officers of the British army at that and any other time.

I know I shall be wearing with pride my father’s First World War medals at the Anzac Day service on Saturday.

As a controversial after thought, the Prime Minister seems hell-bent on changing our flag to which the stock objection is that our present flag is the one we went to war under and should therefore be left well alone.

True as that may be, the fact surely is too that we are a rather different country from the one represented by that flag in 1915.

So perhaps Mr Key is right; it could, indeed, be time for a change.

Buy up Auckland, Asian advert says An Asian radio advert is boasting that property investors can get New Zealanders to “go to work for you and give you hundreds of dollars a week” in rent in Auckland’s overheated property market.

The advert, aired amid ‘60s classic hits on Singaporean radio station 90.5 Gold, sells Auckland as “an investors’ dream” with no land tax, stamp duty or capital gains tax.

And with the added bonus of Kiwis paying half their week’s wages into an investor’s pocket.

It starts by asking listeners: “How would you like people in New Zealand to give you around half their weekly wages?”

“Now if you happen to own an apartment in Auckland, New Zealand, the high rent returns, other people’s money – around half a week’s pay for most people – could be paid to you as rent every week,” the Kiwi man’s voice continues.

“Now many people invest in

Auckland because of the high demand for rents. There’s no stamp duty, no land tax, and within New Zealand, generally no capital gains tax either. It’s an investor’s dream, and very affordable.

“New apartments in the centre of Auckland can be purchased for as little as $390,000 – that’s right $390,000. And with as little as $2000 initial deposit you can secure one today for yourself as an investment.”

It ends by asking interested investors to call a number “if the idea of having people in New Zealand going to work for you, giving you hundreds of dollars a week, paying for your apartment appeals to you – and I’m sure it does”.

A user on SoundCloud, who posted the audio of the advert, said it “encourages investment in to NZ – for bargain basement rates that others cannot access”.

A secretive religious community in New Zealand owns assets worth $36.6 million prompting a charity expert to challenge their status as an income-tax exempt charity.

Gloriavale Christian Community, on the West Coast of the South Island, runs a dairy farm, a deer farm, an airplane repair company, among other smaller companies.

The Christian Church Community trust is run by four leaders of the church and overseen

by Hopeful Christian, who is referred to in documents as the “Overseeing Shepherd”, The trust’s annual returns for August 2013 through July 2014 show it is worth more than $36.6 million and made a net profit of more than $1.86 million in that year.

Former members Elijah Overcomer and Mordecai Courage told Campbell Live the trust owns everything in the community, and when members leave they take nothing with them.

Mr Courage said he had spent his whole life in the community and worked for the benefit of the community, but was entitled to nothing after he left.

The 30 hectare farm in the Haupiri Valley where the community live and work is worth

$10,200,719, and none of the community members are paid for their work in the community’s eight companies.

The number of donations made to the trust in the year totalled $1,502,286.48,while the total amount of contributions the charitable trust made to the community was less than 10 per cent of that, at $108,635.00.

Michael Gousmett, a former charity director and critic of tax-exemption, said the organisation was required to provide public benefit.

“What exactly are they doing that provides a public benefit?

“They’re a highly commercial operation, and by all accounts very successful, but pay no income tax.”

Dr Gousmett said the contributions to the community on the annual returns didn’t provide a clear enough picture of their charity to the community.

“What exactly are those community grants? We don’t know where they go in the community, and do they mean their own community or the wider community?”

Dr Glousmett said he had met a group of Gloriavale members at a charity tax seminar and thought the men, some young, some old, “knew what they

were doing.” He described them as “very pleasant” and “pretty smart”.

The annual returns show the trust carried out total repair and maintenance of $422,838.51 and bought more than $86,000 woodwork and building supplies.

The majority of the supplies and repairs were likely carried out in Greymouth, but Dr Gousmett said any company would do the same in the area, and a charitable trust should go further.

Grey District mayor Tony Kokshoorn said the Gloriavale community have assisted with clean up after storms and tornadoes, and every year supply buns and music to an annual Waitangi Day picnic.

Over 5000 people attend the Gloriavale public concert, which the trust spent $197,575.96 on, Mr Kokshoorn said.

“They’re definitely always helping our community when it’s needed,” he said.

“I’ve never had any problems with them, for any reason... the relationship works well.”

Mr Kokshoorn would not be drawn on whether The Christian Church Community trust should be subsidised by taxpayers.

2C green peas, frozen Lamb: ■ Trim most of the fat from the lamb cutlets. Rub cutlets with a little oil.

■ Press a basil leaf on to the meat on both sides of cutlets.

■ Mix the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese together and place on a large plate and the flour on another.

■ Place egg mixture in a shallow bowl. Dip the cutlets in the flour dusting off any excess, then the egg and finally in the breadcrumbs, pressing them down so the cutlets are well coated.

■ Place on a tray and cover. Refrigerate lamb cutlets if you are not cooking them within 20 minutes.

Herb vinaigrette: ■ Place all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine.

Green vegetables: ■ Steam or boil green vegetables

until just tender, drain and place in a serving bowl. Pour over the herb vinaigrette while still warm and toss gently.

To serve: ■ If refrigerated, bring lamb cutlets back to room temperature.

Pour enough oil into the base of a large frying pan so it comes up the sides by about 2cm. When hot, place in half of the lamb cutlets and pan-fry for 4 minutes, turning once. (This will depend upon thickness of cutlets).

Remove from the frying pan and place on paper towels to drain.

Sprinkle with a little salt. Repeat with the remaining cutlets. Place lamb cutlets on a warm serving platter and serve with the warm green vegetables.

Banned chemicals pick up under way

A nationwide programme to collect banned pesticides from farms has the full support of one of Mid Canterbury’s most outspoken environmental watchdogs.

Mastagard recycling specialist and independent environmentalist Sheryl Stivens welcomed news the project, dubbed the Great DDT Muster, was under way.

Persistant organic pollutants (POPs), including DDT and Dieldrin were commonly used in insecticides and sheep dip products between the 1940s and the 1970s.

Traditional sheep and cropping districts like Mid Canterbury were high users of the toxic products.

The chemicals, which have since been linked with cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and developmental defects in children, have been banned for more than a decade.

However, the 3D Group, the company responsible for the Great DDT Muster, estimates up to five tonnes of products containing the chemicals may still be sitting in farm sheds.

equipped to cope with industrial quantities. “A lot of it is sitting around in unmarked containers, and we need to deal with it before it finds its way into the environment,” she said.

Contamination of land or waterways could spell disaster for export markets as well as exposing humans and animals to serious health risks, Mrs Stivens said.

“These chemicals accumulate in the environment – they don’t break down, and they can be very dangerous.”

As there is no disposal facility in New Zealand, the banned products will be shipped overseas for destruction in highly specialised facilities.

National project manager Jason Richards said many people were unaware of the hazardous materials abandoned on the country’s farms.

Farmers can register to have the chemicals collected without charge for a limited time by visiting the Great DDT Muster website or by calling 0800 247 326.

Damp day fails to depress prices A wet day didn’t dampen prices at this week’s stock sale at Tinwald, with prime sheep fetching $5 a head more than at the previous sale.

Heavy, woolly lambs made $120-$134, medium weights $105-$115, and lighter lambs $80-$100. Top weight woolly ewes fetched $100-$112, mediums $85-$95, and lighter sheep $65-$70.

Store lamb prices were on a par with last

week, with good crossbred lambs realising up to $73. Medium weight stores made $59-$65, and smaller lambs $47-$55.

The 190 prime cattle in the yards were in strong demand, with heavy cows topping $1400.

Prime cows at 600kg made $1.86 kg, medium weight cows weighing 450kg to 550kg made $1.40 kg to$1.60 kg, and lighter types $1.30 kg to $1.40kg.

All will be revealed at a series of seminars in Mid Canterbury next week.

Certified cow signals master Marloes Levelink, of Cows101, will teach farmers to interpret bovine body language, courtesy of Mid Canterbury hoof care specialists Veehof Dairy Services.

She is frequently surprised by the amount of information cows are giving away, and of the failure of farmers to recognise the signs.

“It’s all about being aware and observant,” she said.

As the signals differ between housed and pasture-run cows, separate seminars will be held to cover each situation.

Veehof ’s Fred Hoekstra will also address different factors at play in the lameness cycle.

“Why is it so important to understand all these things? This is what makes the difference between a good and an excellent farmer,” Mr Hoekstra said.

“Being in tune with a cow’s body language will help you to make effective changes in your farming style and become more profitable.”

Four seminars will be held in the conference room at Veehof ’s offices, 154 Coplands Road on April 30, and May 1.

From day one they focused on relatively conservative looks, quality and luxury while delivering a tranquil, rather than an engaging driving experience.

Now, while quality and luxury still prevail, looks, performance and handling are very much part of the bundle, and certainly widens their market appeal.

And that is shown with the distinctive, even edgy, RC Coupe.

And also with the transformation of the NX mid-size, sports SUV by substituting the hybrid power pack with their keen 2-litre, 175kW/350Nm turbo petrol unit (this will very likely soon appear in other Lexus models).

Maybe this change of image is partly driven by some media comment!

That would include one of Jeremy Clarkson’s on Lexus - “Well made, quiet, sensible. But then so is my bank manager, and I don’t want to drive around in him!”

In answering that, the RC Coupes come with either a 3.5-litre V6 with 233kW and/378Nm of torque in the

RC350, while the RC F gets a 5.0-litre V8 with 330kW and 500Nm. Both deliver power through an 8-speed auto to the rear wheels.

Lexus says the 350 can sprint from rest to 100kmh in 6.1 seconds, and the V8 in 4.5.

Then lurking in the background is the halo performance model, the $174,900 RCF Carbon.

It naturally has lots of carbon fibre, while its V8 is ramped up to 351kW/530Nm, and there’s lots of additional performance gear.

After my drive time with the RC 350 Limited, I decided that its dual-injected V6 delivers more than enough grunt.

It’s certainly quick enough, and in concert with the slick auto is reassuringly responsive in all situations, and thrives in the role as a very comfortable, long-distance cruiser.

During the latter, my Canadian visitor once again marvelled at our quickly changing scenery.

And how well the RC 350 coped, with our also, ever changing, open road driving conditions.

easily slotted into around town duties, where the variable ratio steering shines, making it easy to manouevre.

Plus there’s pretty good vision all round.

As well as delivering whatever was asked, in an expectedly, very smooth and responsive manner, its day-to-day driving is very quiet.

But to solicit its very best, the V6 needs to be revved.

Do this and it emits a suitably impressive sound as well.

And the stated overall fuel economy is 9.4L/100km dependent of course on your driving style!

The RCs have the current, unmistakably Lexus signature grille.

They’ve lots of angles, a long bonnet, neatly curving waist, tidy nether regions and 19-inch alloys.

The sum total of which is a nicely balanced, subtly aggressive look.

We enjoyed luxuriating in the very well laid out cabin,

which definitely focuses on, and provides space for, the driver and front passenger.

It oozes quality and of course comes with high levels of gear - sat-nav, touch climate controls, 7 inch monitor, console touch pad and more.

Refreshing facelift for Toyota’s GT86

WHEELS WEEK Wheels Week Plus 2015 which kicks off on Saturday May 2 is being preceded with a special church service at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church this Sunday, April 26 at 10am. The “Back to the Future” service will be a special celebration of the wheel and a great way to usher in Wheels Week.

BUS TRIP Historic Places Mid Canterbury is running a Heritage Bus Trip on Sunday May 3, visiting Christchurch heritage buildings. Bourdais makes V8 return Experienced French open-wheel driver Sebastien Bourdais will partner with Holden’s Lee Holdsworth for this year’s Bathurst 1000.

The four-time Champ Car World Series title-winner will be Holdsworth’s co-driver for the 1000km V8 Supercars endurance classic as well as the Sandown 500 and Gold Coast 600 events.

It’s the first time Bourdais has driven in Australia since partnering with six-time V8s champion Jamie Whincup for the 2011 and 2012 Gold Coast events as an international co-driver.

Bourdais won two races alongside Whincup and says he’s relishing the chance to tackle the championship’s marquee race at Mount Panorama.

Walkinshaw Racing managing director Adrian Burgess was the team manager at Triple Eight Race Engineering when Bourdais drove with Whincup and the Frenchman said he was looking forward to reigniting that partnership.

“After the great successes I enjoyed with Holden and Adrian in 2011 and 2012, it is great to come back to V8 Supercars,” Bourdais said. “I will check off my bucket list races I have been wanting to compete in for a while.

“I am really excited and looking forward to discover Sandown and Bathurst, and to return to Surfers in Lee’s car. I met him a few years back, he is a great guy, a terrific driver.”

Holdsworth, who has only joined Walkinshaw Racing this season after a switch from the Mercedespowered Erebus team, said he was confident Bourdais’ prior experience in a V8 Supercar would make him a good co-driver for this year’s endurance races.

Ashburton Hearing Assn Our AGM was held April 17. President Russell Anstiss welcomed Mayor Angus McKay and 40 members. Apologies were received and Minutes of the 2014 AGM were read and confirmed.

Russell presented his Annual Report.

Membership is slightly down but compared to many other Hearing Associations in New Zealand is probably the most stable. The three lunches and two bus trips held during the year have continued to be popular.

Muriel Lay (Treasurer) and Elizabeth Imrie (Secretary) were thanked for their work. Committee members were commended for their willingness to undertake any task asked of them.

Also thanked Mr Angus McKay, Mayor and Patron, Kathleen Vessey hospital and member visiting, Margaret Bennett Website updating, Maree Chambers Canterbury Ear Health and Hearing Technology Support person, Jim Lischner, Reviewer, Gary Maxey, hearing aid repairs, Dianna Leonard, Centre Manager. The volunteers at the Centre were thanked for their contribution to the smooth running of the office.

Speaker, Tony Sands presented a very interesting and frank address, covering his childhood, work experiences, including the freezing works, traffic police, police force, private investigator, restaurant part-ownership, real estate and presently as Manager of Lochlea Estate which includes overseeing the sale of private land, the development of 107 villas in the Lifestyle Resort. Building has just commenced on an 80 bed hospital.

The meeting concluded with afternoon tea.

Ashburton Indoor Bowls It’s been a busy opening week on the indoor bowling mats in Ashburton.

Things kicked off with the Town v Country fixture last week and its pleasing (from my perspective anyway) to be able to say that it is the country side who will hold bragging rights over their town counterparts after walking away victorious.

Most pleasing for the night was the chance to get to meet some new faces to the stadium – more of this please!

Our first champion for the year, the Triples, has been run and won.

Congratulations to the victors; Mike Lawson Matt Markham and Alex Crawford who defended their title over a gallant Ellis trio of Russell, Cameron and David in a great final.

Disappointing though was the number of entries – especially for so early in the season.

Entries for the National Championships, which will this year be held in Timaru close today with Ashburton secretary, Darryn Turner.

All four disciplines of the game are up for grabs and this year will see the introduction of an Over 60’s category.

So if you fancy heading down to Timaru for a day or two, even if it is to play in just the one event make sure you get in contact with someone at your local club.

Good luck to those representing Ashburton this weekend against North Canterbury.

Lions Club of Hinds and Districts On Tuesday evening 70 members and guests from Methven and County Lions attended the club’s Ladies Night.

Ashburton Rose Group The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Rose Group was held on Wednesday April 8 at 7pm in the Catholic Community Rooms.

Pauline welcomed 9 members and we received apologies from Pam Harcourt, Daphne Rissman and Joan Lawrence.

Unfortunately because of the dry weather we experienced during the summer our trip to Marg Verall’s garden at Winchmore had to be cancelled. Her garden is better in the spring to visit.

Our next meeting May 14 will be held at Kathy Collie’s home for our AGM where we will watch a DVD of the Melbourne Flower Show after our AGM. When we had finished our meeting Pauline spoke to us about Showing Roses, cut the stem of the rose under warm water and then fill bucket with cold water for them to stand in. Leave quite a few leaves on.

She also gave us some tips on planting rose cuttings, put stagnant moss in bottom of pot dip cutting in Manuka honey or rooting hormone then fill pot with potting mix and sand. Keep them damp.

The meeting concluded with supper.

Ashburton Savage Club The 2015 season is now under way with the first Chorus Group practice being held on Monday evening the April 13 and our annual dinner on Tuesday evening the April 14, at the M.S.A. restaurant.

The wintery blast was probably the reason for the poor turnout of members to the Chorus Group practice and who could blame anyone for choosing to stay home on such a cold, stormy night.

A total of 41 attended our Annual Dinner; 30 of our own members & wives plus 11 visitors from South Canterbury & Christchurch Savage Clubs.

Great Chief John welcomed all present with a special welcome to the Dominion

She spoke of her travels to overseas countries, visiting their farming communities and the experience and knowledge she had gained from dealing with their governments and regulatory bodies. She closed by reminding all of the many services provided by FF’s particularly in the area of health and welfare support in difficult times, such as we presently have.

A good turnout of Chorus Group members on Monday evening April 20 ensured a good practice for our first korero (concert) to be held on Tuesday April 28.

On Tuesday evening April 21, Past Chief Wahine Sue Power, demonstrated the new defibrillator unit, which is to be permanently housed in the Savage Club Hall, to members of the Savage Club, Wahine Club and family members. Sue has had many years’ experience as a paramedic ambulance driver with the St.John Ambulance Association and her very knowledgeable demonstration was greatly appreciated by those attending.

Grey Power Ashburton On Monday April 20 Grey Power Ashburton welcomed approximately 60 members to their monthly general meeting at the Seniors Centre. President Ruth Thomas welcomed those present and visitors from Temuka & Timaru Associations and accepted apologies from Greer Ricketts, Sheila Graham, Dick & Jean MacDonald and Ken & Mary Smith.

Ruth announced that as the next meeting will be AGM, any members interested in serving on the committee should obtain a nomination form from Natalie or Shirley.

Ruth then introduced the speaker for the afternoon; Les Howard QSM, Life Member and Past President of Grey Power Federation. Les spoke about the implications and lack of information available regarding the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement which is currently being negotiated between 12 Pacific Rim countries. From what is known about it, this agreement will give vast powers to large corporations particularly pharmaceutical companies. It will also affect parallel importing and possibly undermine our sovereignty.

There are some benefits with the possible reduction in tariffs and compliance costs. Les advised that letters to members of parliament were the best method of protest. Trevor Gamblin thanked Les and presented him with a fruit basket.

The raffles were drawn and prizes distributed. Bernard, Rose and Irene entertained while afternoon tea was prepared and served.

Next meeting will be on Monday May 18; the speaker will be Gabrielle and Paul Sparrow from the NZ Sock Company.

Methven Bowls Our ladies and men’s triples teams went to Christchurch to compete in the champion of champions.

Our ladies Maureen Sullivan, Raiona Isherwood and Mary Stone won their first two games and were only just pipped out of a placing for the semifinals. Well done girls.

Our guys David Isherwood, Simon Fleetwood and Jeff Nowell went on to win 3 games. They were only just ousted by the eventual winners Hornby. Congratulations.

What a fantastic weekend Rob had. Not only did he win the open junior singles he also went on to win the Sub Centre C/C junior men’s singles winning against Larry Neal. Congratulations.

Aaron Allred also made the final in the Colts C/C. He played really well but only just lost to Rod Jenner.

A very emotional Shirley Pagey came out the victor of the Ladies C/C ladies singles. What a game!!! Shirley played Wendy Herriot who fought with every bowl. It was an exciting game to watch and both ladies need congratulated.

Craig Carter was another Methven Bowler that had a winning weekend. He played in the Redcliff’s Mt Pleasant invitation triples and the team he played with won.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club President Avis Kingland welcomed members to the April meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club held recently. New member Marion was introduced to the meeting.

The mini speaker was Gwen Clucas who spoke of her childhood spent in a remote isolated area near Fielding. Gwen’s parents had a small dairy farm so she helped with the milking, also enjoyed sports and Girl Guides.

The main speakers were Annie Bonifant, who is the Manager of the Mid and South Canterbury Branch of the Cancer Society and also Kate. Cancer is the biggest killer in New Zealand, one in three people are affected by it.

The Society is a non-profit charitable organisation, and receives no Government funding.

They have five main areas – research, information, health care promotion, supportive care and fund raising. Recent events have included the very successful Relay for Life, there is also Daffodil Day. They support people and families, give practical and emotional care but not medical advice. They have a driving service and many other support systems. There are 140 people on the books, with 90 volunteers.

The Thought for the Day is “Everyone is ignorant, only on different subjects” by Will Rogers.

MSA Outdoor Bowls Contrary to the weather forecast for rain M.S.A. bowls experienced two beautiful days, Saturday closing day, and Sunday Champions of Champions singles. The green was in top class order for the playing on both days and it was pleasing to see players and spectators enjoying the sunshine and bowls. Closing day was the playing of the Hec. Harper Trophy and was won by Ray Mitchell and team.

Congratulations, well done. Thank-you to all who provided a sumptuous afternoon tea which was enjoyed after the

presentation of the seasons trophies.

Rakaia Garden Club A group of enthusiastic gardeners met together for the Rakaia Garden Club monthly meeting on Monday 13th April.

Joyce Read from Ashburton gave us an insight into the art of growing of competition quality Dahlias. Joyce and her husband farmed around Ashburton and when they moved into town Joyce brought with her 60 varieties of Dahlia.

Now their garden shows 400 varieties.

We were fortunate enough that the season has been kind and late to Dahlias so Joyce was able to bring along a selection of these flowers still in prime condition.

From these Joyce described at least 9 different types. All the stems were very strong due to the good dosing of potash Joyce gives the plants; this potash increases the colour intensity as well.

We were so impressed with the “science” of Dahlias, and did appreciate Joyce sharing her specialized knowledge with us.

Plains Ladies Probus Club Joan Prendergast our new President opened our April meeting and welcomed members and wished those having birthdays and anniversaries best wishes.

Apologies and correspondence were read. It was announced that Ross Gurney had been elected as Chairman of Northern and South Island Council.

Treasures report was given and reminded members that subs were due. The Movie “Boy Choir” is on at 11am on May 6. Our Mini speaker was Nancy Costin who told us about her time she spent travelling to Ireland, Paris and England back in 2005 where she went to train at “Oxford Aunts” in Oxford to care for elderly folk. Caring for several different men and ladies at different places she had interesting stories to tell.

The raffle was drawn before morning tea was served. Adair Pethig from Age Concern, our speaker who works as Activity organiser at Rosebank Rest Home came to speak to us and explain just what the benefits of Age Concern are.

The group was first formed back in 1986 and has grown since then. They are situated at the Ashburton Senior Centre Building in Cameron Street. Services run

by Age Concern are Confident Driving Courses, Total Mobility, Falls Prevention, 206 Club, Courtesy Driving, gardening and home maintenance for members and others.

Qualifying contest for Jewels hots up

Spots at the Harness Jewels meeting in Ashburton at the end of next month are really starting to heat up.

With just a few more weeks of qualifying remaining for the $1.2 million race day, there is

some serious jostling going on amongst the leaderboards as horses try and earn maximum dollars to ensure they are at harness racing’s richest race day.

Two particular horses have massive mountains in front of them – and they incidentally come from the same stable.

Ideal Belle, who finished sec-

ond behind Venus Serena at Cambridge last year and her stable mate Sky Major, who has the chance to be one of the first horses to win three Jewels, are both at risk of missing out.

They would need to win on Friday at Auckland to get a chance and even then that might not be enough.

Sky Major will take on a starstudded cast in the Group One New Zealand Messenger while Ideal Belle has a slightly easier job in a lower grade race.

Incredibly there isn’t one Mid Canterbury-trained horse in the top 12 in any of the nine Jewels categories – meaning the local representatives on the day

might be left to owners and drivers.

Gerard O’Reilly’s two-yearold pacer, Sparkling Delight, who was an impressive winner at Addington last week looks the most likely at this stage, but would still need to win another race to secure himself a spot in the two-year-old Emerald.

Gough turns to road Two-time Olympic track cycling medallist Westley Gough is heading for the road. Gough has retired from track riding and is turning his attention to road racing, having been a part of the national track squad for a decade.

The 27-year-old from Waipukurau has joined the Australian-based Budget Forklifts team which competes in the national series across the Tasman. “I believe now is the right time for me to step aside and focus on some new goals, both on and off the bike.”

Shock move to improve Warriors coach Andrew McFadden hopes his decision to drop Konrad Hurrell will have a marked effect on his side as they look to reduce their error rate in their Anzac Day clash against the Titans.

McFadden’s decision to replace Hurrell with David Fusitu’a was not made lightly but four error-riddled performances from his side over the past month meant something had to change.

“Errors are a part of our game but the types of errors we’re making are really hurting us at the moment, in our own end, fundamental, and under no pressure,” McFadden explained.

“We’ve addressed it again but it’s really up to the individuals now and I’ve had to make some people accountable and, hopefully, that shocks them into some form this week.”

McFadden admits he was tempted to leave his right edge untouched for a fourth straight week, with the potential that Hurrell would find his best form in his fourth game back from a knee injury which has hindered his start to the year.

But after conceding that Hurrell was brought back too soon for the round-five clash

with Melbourne, and two mixed performances from the burly centre against the Tigers and Cowboys, McFadden opted to wield the axe.

“I certainly thought long and hard about it but there are some things Konrad needs to improve on that I’ve made him aware of,” he said.

“He understands that and it wasn’t just about the errors.

There are some circumstances around Konrad and his knee and his lack of preparation, because of that knee, which probably impacted on his form a little. Even though he’s doing some good things, there are some things he needs to work on.

“I know he’ll bounce back and there was a temptation to make other changes but I feel that some guys need that second chance.”

Fusitu’a will make his first appearance of the season after recovering from shoulder surgery over the offseason and impressing with three tries in his first two games back in NSW Cup over the last fortnight.

After playing 12 games on the right wing last season, McFadden says Fusitu’a’s size, speed and skill-set make him well suited to the midfield.

Plan to light up Dunedin cricket Lighting up cricket in Dunedin will enhance Otago Cricket’s ambitions to host more international matches.

Plans are afoot to erect light towers at University Oval in time to be used next summer. The cost is about $2 million, of which the Dunedin City Council is being asked to stump up half, with OC confident it can cover the balance.

The DCC rejected the proposal when it was tabled before Christmas. However there is optimism a change of mind is in the offing at budget meetings next month and in June.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull wouldn’t comment.

Raising the capacity to 6000 is also part of the plan, although unconnected to the lighting project.

At present no day-night cricket can be played in the South Island with none of the other three southern venues, Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Saxton Oval in Nelson and Queenstown’s Events Centre, having lights.

The only grounds with lighting in the country are Eden Park, Seddon Park in Hamilton, Napier’s McLean Park and Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

Given the amount of cricket New Zealand play involving the sub-continent, and the size of the financial benefits to New Zealand Cricket of beaming matches into, chiefly, India, in good viewing timeslots for them – ie, day-night fixtures in New Zealand – the idea has merit.

Luatua’s chance to shine Steven Luatua’s frustratingly stop-start season is about to get back on track.

With Blues coach John Kirwan about to rest All Black and Blues captain Jerome Kaino, Luatua will be named at No8 to take on the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday.

A chance to test himself against the likes of Kieran Read and Richie McCaw – providing they are playing and aren’t under All Blacks’ resting orders like Kaino – should be grabbed with both hands by 23-year-old Luatua who hasn’t quite been able to get going in 2015.

His reward for re-committing to the Blues and New Zealand Rugby was to be

named on the bench for the win against the Brumbies at Eden Park, and he played no part at all in last weekend’s defeat to the Highlanders in Dunedin, Kirwan stating that Luatua’s bruises were finally catching up with him.

He has been knocked around – a stinger injury suffered when he threw himself in front of Hurricanes wing Julian Savea in Palmerston North caused Sanzar to ask the Blues if the big loosie had been concussed, but now he should be rested and ready to throw off the shackles which for whatever reason have been holding him back since his debut season in 2013.

New-look netball starts

Methven start the new netball season as inaugural holders of the Premier Challenge Trophy when the premier competition begins tonight.

Drawn from the hat, Methven were the lucky side to have first hold with two-time defending premiers Celtic stepping up as the first challenger.

The two sides have developed

quite the rivalry in recent years after clashing in three straight finals.

Last year it looked as though the rivalry was over as Celtic collected two comfortable wins in the first two rounds only for Methven to shock the defending premiers in round three. Methven couldn’t repeat the feat in the semi-finals as Celtic marched towards back-to-back titles.

Both teams have seen some

major roster changes but will be intent to start the season on a winning note - especially with the new challenge shield also up for grabs.

Methven A coach Maree McPhail said the team were looking forward to the game tonight, but the challenge trophy would not add too much weight to the competition initially.

“We had a really good training and we are looking forward to it,

I think it will be a really good game against Celtic because they are reigning champs.”

Celtic A coach Angela Leadley said her team was looking forward to facing off against Methven. “[Methven] are a nice team to play and they’re a very skilled team, we always have a good run against them.”
