Another farm near Ashburton has been confirmed as having mycoplasma bovis, bringing the total number in Mid Canterbury to seven.

The Ministry for Primary Industries made the announcement late on Friday, at the same time confirming another Canterbury property was also infected.

Both are dairy farms and both are connected through animal movements to other known infected properties, the ministry said.

It brings the total number of infected

properties since the outbreak was first discovered last year to 37, although five of those have since been cleared after herds were culled and the farms disinfected.

The ministry said maintaining the option of eradication remains its primary objective, with extensive operations taking place to trace historic animal movements and identify the potential presence of the bacterium.

Initial culling of infected herds was put on hold in December, although last month MPI announced it was resuming.

It has since begun on properties in Can-

terbury, Southland and Otago and by the end of last week more than 5000 cattle had been culled from five properties as part of the process.

This week three more properties will be added to that.

Before the announcement of the latest infected property near Ashburton, MPI had said the number of cows to be culled in Mid Canterbury was more than 5000.

Brawl ends rugby match

Farmers’ market wraps up for the season

Mid Canterbury Rugby officials are investigating a brawl involving players and spectators at a senior B rugby game at Hampstead on Saturday.

The match, between Hampstead and Collegiate, was called off 15 minutes early after players

from both teams and spectators began fighting.

Collegiate, which was ahead on the scoreboard, had just scored a try before the brawl began.

Both teams were eventually separated and the match called off.

Mid Canterbury Rugby chief executive officer Ian Patterson said the behaviour was unacceptable and an investigation was under way. Information was being gathered from the referee’s match report and from others at the game.

Patterson said the union had 48 hours to gather reports and the incident would be dealt with by the sport’s judicial disciplinary process.

“We certainly take a very dim view of things like this and are investigating.”

As well as those properties identified as infected, there are another 19 under restricted place notices. These farms, if not already confirmed as infected, are strongly suspected of being so. The notice prohibits all unauthorised movements of farm stock and other risk goods onto and off the property, which minimises the chance of the disease

spreading from the property.

Since testing began, there have been 2431 properties traced, 120,945 samples received and 122,532 tests done.

A new, commercial diagnostic tool to enable farmers to commission tests for M bovis is currently being developed in partnership with commercial laboratories and the industry.

The tool will be released once sampling guidelines, a testing strategy, and possibly an accreditation programme have been developed – to ensure the test can be accurately applied and interpreted.

MPI response director Geoff Gwyn said since the discovery of mycoplasma bovis in New Zealand last year, the partnership had been working hard to provide practitioners and farmers with better diagnostic tests to assist in detecting the cattle disease on their farms.

“However, while testing options and solutions are becoming available, we have identified that interpreting a one-off test result, even at the herd level, in isolation to other factors, is challenging and carries an inherent risk for farmers when in isolation to other factors. The tests cur-

rently available will lead to a significant number of farms being falsely identified as positive and farms that may be real positives being missed.

“That’s why we are developing robust processes, including a testing strategy and sampling guidelines, which may form part of an accreditation programme,” he said.

The ministry is still confident that culling across the country would still be completed in time for Gypsy Day but that was dependent on a number of factors, some of which are out of its control.

The Ashburton Farmers’ Market held its last market for the season on Saturday, with stallholders now having a rest until it kicks off again in late September.

Market secretary Judith Crozier said the weekly event, held at the north end of the West Street carpark, was busy around Christmas but had tapered off in recent weeks, so it was decided to wrap things up one week earlier than initially planned.

Overall however, the season was a lot of fun, with a good variety of produce on offer.

This season was the market’s 11th and Crozier said one of the highlights was the involvement of Patricia McLaren, who produced 175 varieties of pickles, jams and preserves.

That translated into thousands of jars, proceeds from which went to Ronald McDonald House.

“She’s just an inspiration,” Crozier said.

Market organisers were on the lookout for more stallholders to join them next season, she said, particularly sellers of honey and cheese.

However, anyone with plant or vegetable related products would be more than welcomed, she said.

Labour demands in spotlight Ashburton District Council is investing in the development of a labour force plan for Mid Canterbury to maximise the district’s potential for future economic growth.

According to mayor Donna Favel, the plan will also help to identify industries where labour shortages are most likely in the future and help them to plan ahead.

The New Zealand Institute of

Economic Research (NZIER) will first analyse the local labour force and then develop the plan for the council and other stakeholders to implement.

Among the issues that NZIER will consider are the educational needs or gaps in the Ashburton workforce; the number of people commuting between Ashburton and Christchurch; the more than 30,000 rebuild workers transition-

ing out of construction-related employment by 2020; and any upcoming issues related to migration.

Farming conversions, more intensive tourism, export growth and population growth have all been identified as driving future demand for labour in the Ashburton District.

NZIER will consider the demand for labour in the district,

the gap between it and supply, and how workers are attracted to Ashburton and retained here. The analysis will also involve reviewing existing literature, as well as interviews and workshops with local employers and other stakeholders.

“Council is anticipating and planning for a strong population growth in Ashburton over the coming decades but that is reliant

on expanding the local economy,” the mayor said.

“It is a real chicken and egg situation with us needing people to come here to work now, so that more will come in the future and help us realise the district’s potential.”

The labour force analysis is now under way and it is anticipated a labour force plan will be completed before the end of the year.

Local poultry auction attracts plenty of bidders

The Ashburton Fanciers’ Society annual poultry auction in Ashburton yesterday was a great success, president John Taylor says.

It was one of the bigger auctions the society has held, he said, with more than 260 lots on offer at the Sports Hall in Tancred Street.

“More and more people are getting into backyard chooks,” he said. “The whole backyard poultry thing has really gone crazy in the past few years.

“A lot of people who had birds in this time around we’d never seen before.”

Prices paid were solid across the board, Taylor said, but it was the bigger birds in particular, known to be better layers, which attracted the strongest interest.

The auction, in its 27th year, is easily the biggest in the South Island, and this year drew people from Invercargill to Wellington, with others from the West Coast.

Organising it was a mammoth task, Taylor said and he thanked the small team of volunteers who made it all possible.

The society’s next event is its annual show in June.

District council backs local roads funding Ashburton District Council has lodged its opposition to KiwiRail becoming an approved public organisation under the Land Transport Management Act, if it is to be funded from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF).

The council made its views known in a submission late last week on a proposal within the draft Government Policy Statement 2018 on Land Transport.

It follows mayor Donna Favel, deputy mayor Neil Brown, and chairman of the council’s service delivery committee, Stuart Wilson, attending a Government Policy

Transport Summit on April 9. In the mayor’s submission, it said that Ashburton District’s agriculture-based economy meant producers relied heavily on road transport and that local transport companies contributed significantly to the overall funding of the National Land Transport Fund through Road User Charges (RUCs).

“As a result we would be reluctant for the RUCs paid in this region to be used to fund passenger rail in urban areas, where our residents would not gain any direct benefit,” the mayor said. “We believe the NLTF should be

used to continue to maintain and more importantly upgrade our existing roading infrastructure to continue our district’s financial contribution to the country’s economy. Any funding should be provided through taxes and other sources, leaving the NLTF for roading infrastructure use only,” she said.

Councils had until last Friday to make a submission on the KiwiRail proposal and have until May 2 to make their views known on the overarching policy statement.

Ashburton District Council is also preparing a submission on the policy statement.

Young tennis players hone their skills Potential tennis stars of the future spent three days at the Ashburton Tennis Centre last week getting to grips with finer points of the racket game.

The youngsters were under the eye of head tennis coach Andre van Rooyen and already successful juniors who have taken part in the camp.

Van Rooyen said the camp was about helping players improve their game to the point they could take part in the district’s interclub tennis competitions.

The youngsters, aged 7-10 years, could also work on their skills during the winter so they were confident about taking the court when the new season began in October.

The camp was a chance to consolidate their learning and have fun, he said. “They had a blast.”

Some of the district’s promising youngsters also spent time in Christchurch last week playing in the Canterbury junior open against players from all over the country.

Van Rooyen said it was a chance to show the youngsters what was required to play at higher levels and for them to play some of the best age-group players in the country.

They seized the opportunity to learn and even succeeded in taking a few game off higher-ranked players, he said.

Power outage A small explosion has caused a power outage to 100 homes in an Auckland suburb. Fire and Emergency say it was called to a power transformer explosion on the corner of Taikata Road and Te Atatu Road about 10am yesterday. The explosion did not create a fire and Auckland line’s company Vector were notified of the incident. A spokeswoman for Vector says the cause of the explosion was a fault in a switch unit termination.

First sod turned Forestry Minister Shane Jones has planted the first tree in the One Billion Trees planting programme at a primary school in the Gisborne region. Mr Jones, Associate Minister of Agriculture Meka Whaitiri and Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon each planted a native tree at Manutuke School yesterday.

“I’m making good on my word to plant the first tree in Tairawhiti – the first place to see the sun,” Mr Jones said. Five symbolic natives were planted – a Kowhai, Totara, Kahikatea and Puriri and Matai.

The government has set a target of planting a billion trees over a 10-year period.

Sky wraps up tour coverage

Quake claimant won’t give up

By GreGor Paul Sharks may be circling and the Rugby World Cup has been lost, but Sky has moved quickly to ensure no more cracks appear in its broadcast empire by locking in the rights for the All Blacks’ endof-year tour.

The beleaguered broadcaster has endured a tough few months where it has been forced to slash prices in the face of mounting speculation a number of major players are preparing to bid for the long-term rights to show All Blacks tests when the existing deal owned by Sky finishes at the end of 2020.

The first signs that the market pressure is real came last week when a joint bid by Spark and TVNZ won the rights to broadcast next year’s Rugby World Cup. That victory for Spark/TVNZ led to some murmuring that the former state telecoms company may also try to buy the rights to show the All Blacks’ end-of-year

tour as those games are not covered in the five-year agreement Sky signed with NZ Rugby in 2016.

Sky and NZR have historically negotiated year-to-year around the November tests and in some cases have left discussions until just weeks before.

But with the 2018 schedule having taken on epic propor-

tions with games to be played in Japan as well as London, Dublin and Rome, Sky have already confirmed they have the rights.

“We have a great line-up of All Blacks end-of-year rugby, and given the form of some of the northern hemisphere teams it should be a great spectacle for Kiwi fans,” said Sky chief executive John Fellet.

“We have Eddie Jones’ England hosting the All Blacks on November 10 at Twickenham. We have the Six Nations champions Ireland versus All Blacks the following weekend. And to wrap up the year, All Blacks versus Italy on November 24. We also have the special Japan-based Bledisloe match on October 27.”

By tying up the last five matches of the year, Sky have ensured Spark and TVNZ won’t be able to gain any production experience ahead of the World Cup next year.

Neither have a recent track record of producing rugby coverage and the latter has come in for heavy criticism for its packaging and presentation of the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Viewers were left outraged at times at some of the editorial choices made by the directors and the heavy commercial intrusion which constantly interrupted events at key times.

Bank inquiry ‘not needed’ in New Zealand

An inquiry into New Zealand banks is not needed, Reserve Bank of New Zealand governor Adrian Orr says.

In Australia, AMP chief executive Craig Meller quit on Friday after executives admitted to the royal commission there that clients had been charged for advice they never received and lies had been told to a corporate watchdog.

Former Australian deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce admitted he was wrong in standing against a royal commission.

In New Zealand there have been calls for a similar investigation given the main players in the financial system are the same.

Claire Matthews from Massey University’s business school

told Radio NZ she doesn’t believe banks in New Zealand are involved in the sort of misconduct exposed in the royal commission in Australia.

But Dr Matthews said there was no harm in taking a closer look at what was happening in this country.

Mr Orr told TVNZ’s Q+A programme yesterday an inquiry was not needed.

“I would say no, because the financial markets authority are all day, every day, thinking harder around the consumer-investor behaviour,” he said.

“We’ve got ourselves around the prudential regulatory behaviours.”

“I don’t see any lack of confidence in banks in New Zealand,” Mr Orr said.

He said banking was the second-oldest business in the world, and “it’s made very, very high rates of return on capital forever” but it faced challenges like other industries.

The Christchurch man who is starving himself until he gets a resolution from the governmentowned insurer regarding his quake-damaged house has lost 1kg a day since starting almost six days ago.

Peter Glasson started his hunger strike outside Southern Response’s Christchurch offices last Tuesday after being unable to reach a settlement for his house which was badly damaged in the 2010 and 2011 quakes.

Negotiations between himself and his wife Anne and Southern Response were ongoing last week.

Glasson said he was “feeling pretty weak”, but his resolve was just as strong.

“As the middle of day six of my hunger strike approaches, I feel no less resolve than when I started. Anne and I are continuing our negotiations with Southern Response and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment about that.”

He had received strong public support but had also been saddened by the number of stories he had heard that were similar to theirs. “... but it is your encouragement and kind words that are helping me to keep going,” Glasson said.

Glasson took the drastic measure of going on a hunger strike after claiming Southern Response had threatened them, spied on them and was manipulating the court process to slow things down.

A court hearing initially scheduled for November last year could now be delayed by another year.

Southern Response had also requested to visit the Glassons’ house for the 17th time to carry out further investigations.

A fresh look at water

The Water Project invited 13 notable Kiwi artists to have their say on water, and now school holiday-makers can do the same.

School holiday entertainment awaits amid the Ashburton Art Gallery’s newest exhibition.

Children of all ages are invited to take part in a free, unique school holiday programme based on the gallery’s Water Project exhibition which opened earlier this month, to indulge in its fun, educational aspects.

Ashburton Art Gallery’s Nicole Bourke said the programme explores water from a scientific, creative and historical perspective.

Participants can follow the path of water from the mountains to the sea with a new tablet game, create artwork from water at the art station, or design an irrigation system and learn about filtering water.

The exhibition is organised in conjunction with the Ashburton Museum, and will run until April 29.

They’re the Aussie contemporary music group that truly boast strength in numbers.

Two thousand performances across 30 countries, 14 albums and 90 million global listeners – and all due to culminate on stage in Ashburton in June.

The Ten Tenors are en route to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre during their New Zealand tour, and are promising an evening full of their “vast repertoire, breathtaking arrangements and powerful live performances”.

Covering Buckley to Bocelli, the group say they “tip their hat” to both the classical tenors and composers and contemporary music’s most popular artists.

We can’t ignore the state of our land A

n environmental report released late last week contained some sobering information about the loss of soil and productive land – but even more concerning was its lack of up-to-date detail.

Our Land 2018, the latest report in an environmental reporting series published by the Ministry for the Environment and Statistics New Zealand, aims to provide a clearer picture of the state of the land environment, which will hopefully provide a better understanding of it, so positive and negative impacts of human activities can be tracked, and key challenges identified.

Some of the key findings of the latest report included 192 million tonnes of soil are lost every year from erosion – 44 per cent of that is from pasture; while there has been an increasing reduction in

the amount of land used for agriculture, with lifestyle blocks and urban subdivisions taking up fertile land.

However, behind the statistics is a glaring hole in the significant amount of up-to-date data available on which to base future decisions and policy, something the report and those behind it admitted numerous times.

On the release of the report, government statistician Liz MacPherson said important parts of the land story are missing.

“There are significant gaps in

our knowledge and the available data, especially integrated data at a national scale.”

To expand on that, while there has been a significant change in land use – a 10 per cent increase in the total size of our towns and cities; a 7 per cent decrease in total area of land in agricultural production; and a net loss of 71,000 hectares of native land cover – those figures are all based on data collected up until 2012.

A lot can change in six years and I guarantee you that it has.

I don’t think anyone is going to argue that in general, land across the country is under increasing pressure, but if we are to find a way forward to help alleviate that, up-to-date information is critical.

Without it, policy makers will be relying on speculation and guess work, and that’s just not

good enough.

As Penny Nelson, deputy secretary at the Ministry for the Environment points out, we need to pay more attention to what’s happening with our soil, as after all, it underpins much of what our economy is based on.

What we do on the land also affects our waterways, along with the volume of our greenhouse gas emissions.

There’s been a lot said about the state of our waterways in recent years and monitoring projects mean much of that can at least be traced back to recent data.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the state of the land.

No reason is given for this, although Federated Farmers environment spokesman Chris Allen, who farms at Ashburton Forks, believes part of the problem is

that scientists are struggling to get successful bids for this type research funding over the line because agricultural science is just not sexy enough.

I’d hope that’s not the case but I’ve got a horrible feeling he may be right.

Hopefully, the release of the report will highlight that this can’t go on.

If we’re serious about the state of the environment we have to look at it as a whole.

This latest report was the first of its kind on focus on the land and now the glaring holes in upto-date information are there for all to see, there’s no excuse for it to continue.

It would be unacceptable for research to continue to ignore the state of the land. To do so will costs us a hefty price in the future.

The meaning of Anzac M

ore years ago than I wish to count I was a kea, a cub and a scout here in Ashburton.

Every year we’d be called on to take part in Anzac services, joining others from across the district to recognise our fallen.

Since then wherever I’ve been, London, Sao Paulo, Sydney, I’ve taken part in Anzac Day commemorations.

What’s been heartening to see over that time is the growing number of people going to services, particularly families and young people.

There’s been a lot of effort by parents and schools to educate kids about the sacrifice our country made, and family members who were affected.

I saw some wonderful examples of that on Friday when I was selling poppies at the entrance of the new Countdown.

Mum or dad handing a coin or two to their son or daughter to buy a poppy. Most understood the significance of what it represented, but where they didn’t,

they asked.

The number of times a family walked out of the supermarket, still talking about it, still questions being asked, 10 or 20 minutes later, it was actually quite uplifting.

Many of the stories I heard centred around a family member who served.

Most of us have those stories.

When the Great War began, New Zealand’s population was small, only around one million people.

We had little national identity, we were a far flung outpost of mother Britain.

More than 10 per cent of our population, over 100,000 New Zealanders, would leave our shores to serve our country in

the Great War. They did not know when they would return, or the scale of the sacrifice they would make at places like Gallipoli, or the Somme, or Passchendaele.

The conflict impacted on all New Zealanders, whether that was the men and women who went overseas, or those who stayed behind.

Many families across New Zealand would suffer tragedy, or know someone who did.

My own family were relatively lucky.

My great grandfather fought at Gallipoli, and then in the Battle of the Somme.

Shot in the upper body, the bullet was judged too close to his heart to ever be removed.

He lived to 67, passing away in the relative peace of a bowling green in South Canterbury.

The war brought out in New Zealanders the qualities of endurance, courage, friendship and commitment, and has had a significant impact on our society.

Our country’s identity and values became more distinct

at home and abroad, and the experiences of New Zealanders from this time are still relevant to us today.

Since that Great War, New Zealanders have fought on many other battlegrounds, with the same courage and tenacity as those that went before them.

In honouring their sacrifice and service in conflict, it is also a time to reflect on what they stood for and why.

We owe a debt of gratitude to those veterans who contributed towards the peace, freedom, and security our country enjoys today.

We wouldn’t be the New Zealand we are today without their sacrifice.

We will remember them.

YOUR VIEW Mycoplasma bovis It is with disbelief I read Damien O’Connor’s response to Andrew Falloon’s comments regarding farmers needing certainty and information regarding the MPI decision to cull infected mycoplasma bovis herds.

Andrew Falloon is absolutely correct that affected farmers need immediate information in relation to the culling decision when the cull will occur and what compensation they will receive, and when.

Farming requires timely decisions in terms of feed requirements, stocking rates and anticipated climatic decisions.

By not giving these farmers the key information they require – when their cows will be culled and what compensation they will receive – these farmers are unable to plan ahead, which will cause a

tremendous amount of stress, both financially and emotionally.

Stress in addition to the strain they have been feeling by being identified as an infected herd.

For O’Connor to reply to Falloon’s comments with criticism of the NAIT system, finger pointing and recommendations to “read the report” on NAIT performance rather than addressing the immediate issue for farmers – when will this cull occur and what compensation they will receive – shows a complete lack of leadership and also a lack of understanding of and empathy for just what farmers are going through.

Damien O’Connor and MPI need to get out in to these regions, meet with farmers and give them some answers rather than simply blaming past failures in the NAIT system.

One Man, Two Guvnors I attended the opening might of the Big Little Theatre Company’s production of One Man, Two Guvnors, on Friday evening to an almost packed theatre.

From start to finish it was an absolute hoot.

The plot, with so many twists, the young, enthusiastic members, to the seniors, were a delight.

The large audience were in fits.

From the lovelorn Alan Dangle, played by Ben Harris and his love, Pauline, played by Elise Heffernan, the love-sick Stanley Stubbers, ably played by William Wallis, and his girlfriend Rachel, portrayed by Kate McIlroy masquerading as her identical twin, murdered brother, to the crazy,

stupid, clever, mad, athletic, talented acting of Francis Henshall.

This part was played by a young actor I have had the pleasure of watching as a young lad starting his acting career, to the gifted roles he is portraying now, Mitchell Farr.

His superb acting plus his ability to involve the audience was inspirational.

My apologies in not mentioning all the acting cast, you are all a credit.

Special mention must be made to all the members of the band, ably led by Wayne Pannett, and to Greta Casey-Solly, it was a pleasure to see a new look on choreography and to you, Jackie Heffernan, in once again for giving the opportunity to these young actors to realise their ambitions We applaud you all.

Inspectors collect samples in Douma Chemical weapons inspectors have collected samples from Syria’s Douma, two weeks after a suspected gas attack there followed by retaliatory strikes by Western powers on the Syrian government’s chemical facilities.

The site visit at the weekend confirmed by the Organisation of the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, would allow the agency to proceed with an independent investigation to determine what chemicals, if any, were used in the April 7 attack that medical workers said killed more than 40 people.

Douma was the final target of the government’s sweeping campaign to seize back control of the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus from rebels after seven years of revolt. Militants gave up the town days after the alleged attack.

The US, France, and Britain blamed President Bashar al-Assad’s government for the attack, and struck suspected Syrian chemical weapons facilities one week later.

The Syrian government and its ally Russia denied responsibility for the attack.

OPCW inspectors arrived in Damascus just hours before the April 15 strikes but were delayed from visiting the site until Saturday, leading Western officials and Syrian activists to accuse Russia and the Syrian government of staging a cover-up.

“I won’t find any hope in my heart until the Assad regime is held accountable and eradicated from government in Syria,” said Bilal Abou Salah, a Douma media activist who left the town after the government takeover.

He said he feared Russian and Syrian government personnel destroyed potential evidence in the two weeks since the alleged attack.

The OPCW said in a statement that it visited “one of the sites” in Douma to collect samples for analysis at agency-designated laboratories, adding it would “consider future steps including another possible visit to Douma”.

It said the mission will draft a report

based on the findings, “as well other information and materials collected by the team”.

A UN security team had scouted Douma on Tuesday to see if it was safe for weapons inspectors to visit. The team came under small arms and explosives fire, leading the agency to delay its mission.

Journalists visiting Douma the previous day, escorted by government minders, experienced no security issues.

Russian ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the delays to the OPCW team were “unacceptable”, in a statement on Saturday.

Douma is just minutes away from Damascus, where the OPCW team is based.

Raed Saleh, the head of the Syrian Civil Defence search-and-rescue group, also known as the White Helmets, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his organisation had shared the co-ordinates of the graves of April 7 victims with the OPCW, so that inspectors could take biological samples.

Farewell to Verne Troyer Austin Powers star Verne Troyer has died aged 49, his official social media accounts have confirmed. The diminutive US actor, best known for playing Mini-Me in the spy comedy films, had openly struggled with alcoholism. Earlier this month the Hollywood star had been admitted to hospital in Los Angeles. A statement posted on his social media pages read: “It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today. “Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh.”

Dragonboats capsize, 17 die in China At least 17 people have died and several more are missing after two dragonboats capsized in the city of Guilin in southern China, according to state media reports.

The accident happened on Saturday during training for the city’s annual dragon boat festival, the reports say.

About 60 paddlers were reported to have fallen into the water.

Two were taken to hospital and were said to be in stable condition, with a further six still missing.

A smartphone video shown on Chinese television showed the boats capsizing as they navigated artificial rapids. The video showed some people desperately trying to reach the shore, and others trying to revive victims lying on the bank.

Villagers had organised the training without informing the police, state news agency Xinhua reported. Two people have been arrested, the agency said.

The dragonboat festival, which features races of ornate boats and drummers, is a popular annual event in China. Along with new year and the Moon Festival, it is one of the country’s most important public holidays. Several thousand people are involved in preparations for the races for weeks beforehand.

This year’s races will take place on June 18.

Nabi Tajima

World’s oldest person dies The world’s oldest person has died in southern Japan at the age of 117. An official in the town of Kikai says Nabi Tajima died in a hospital at the weekend.

She had been in hospital since January.

Tajima was born on August 4, 1900, and reportedly had more than 160 descendants, including great-great-great grandchildren.

Star-studded show for Queen Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has attended a star-studded special concert as the world’s oldest and longest-reigning living monarch celebrated her 92nd birthday.

Welsh singer Tom Jones kicked off the show with his hit It’s Not Unusual before the Queen appeared in the royal box of London’s Albert Hall, flanked by her family.

Kylie Minogue, Sting, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Shaggy were among those on the bill, along with stars of the stage and

screen. The event is a break in tradition for the Queen who usually spends her birthday privately with little public celebration, although there were nationwide events to mark her 90th.

The concert comes at the end of a week in which leaders and dignitaries from 53 countries came to London for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and featured performers from the network of mostly former British colonies.

Titanic menu auctioned A menu for the first meal served on the Titanic has sold for £100,000 ($NZ195,000) at auction in the UK. The lunch – including sweetbreads, spring lamb and pastries – was served during the liner’s sea trials on April 2 in 1912.

Second Officer Charles Lightoller, the highest ranking surviving officer from the Titanic, had given the menu to his wife as a souvenir before he left from Southampton on April 10 in 1912. More than 1500 passengers and crew died when the Titanic struck an iceberg four days later.

Foraging behaviour revealed The previously unknown diving and long-distance swimming abilities of emperor penguins outside the breeding season, has been documented by NIWA marine ecologist Dr Kim Goetz.

Emperor penguins, found only in Antarctica, are the tallest and heaviest of the penguin species, growing up to 122cm high, and weighing between 22 and 45kg.

As a species they gained national and international prominence when one washed up on the Kapiti Coast in 2011. It was named Happy Feet and nursed back to health by Wellington Zoo before being released back into the Southern Ocean from NIWA’s research vessel Tangaroa.

Dr Goetz’s project involved tagging 20 emperor penguins in 2013 and analysing the data on their movements transmitted via satellite. She discovered the penguins travelled between 273km and nearly 9000km and completed dives that ranged between 1 and 32.2 mins, exceeding the previous recorded dive record of 27.6 minutes.

As autumn takes hold, enjoy the season of mellow fruitfulness amongst the vines of Marlborough, writes Mike Yardley. to resurrect the highway.

After departing from Christchurch, in just over four hours, the Awatere Valley was reaching out to greet me as I arrived into Seddon, the gateway to New Zealand’s flagship wine region.

With over 30 cellar doors studding the Marlborough Wine Trail,

my first stop was at Yealands Estate, the world’s first carboNZero winery, established nearly 10 years ago.

Inspired by his deep love of the land, Peter Yealands, a towering wine eco-warrior, has passionately harnessed the sustainability ethos. Nestled on the

Vintage aircraft from the two world wars are showcased at Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, located on the site of Blenheim’s historic aerodrome.

Seaview Peninsula, the roof of the winery is taken up by the nation’s largest solar panel installation (over 1300 of them), while wind turbines, native plantings and free-range animals, from the over-friendly chickens (who rush you, en masse, like a group of muggers) to miniature Babydoll sheep, are all part of the mix.

I savoured many of his signature vineyard features by taking a self-guided drive on the 7kmlong White Route Tour.

The expansive vistas across the undulating folds of the vineyard, and the rolling Aratere landscape, are a visual symphony of nature in harmony. Lookout Point is a celestial vantage point to gaze across Cook Strait, while the South Island’s tallest mountain outside of the Alps, Mt. Tapaue-o-uenuku, looms to the west.

I also encountered another Peter Yealands trademark, Music in the Vines. Just as Prince Charles swears by talking to plants, Peter lavishes his impeccably maintained vine rows with lashings of classical music. He’s adamant that it boosts their fruit production.

Onwards to Blenheim, I did more winery-hopping along the Golden Mile in Renwick and Rapaura.

As the sun bathed the Wairau Plains in golden warmth, I chuckled at the sight of numerous middle-aged visitors cycling

their way from one cellar door to the next, in alarmingly wobbly fashion.

Could there be a better pairing?

I had my fill at Cloudy Bay’s Raw Bar, a very swish seasonal affair, swathed in well-groomed lawns and gardens, adorned in hanging egg chairs and oversized couches.

‘Rocketship’ all weekend Kiwi Scott McLaughlin extended his Supercars championship lead by clean sweeping the weekend’s races at Phillip Island Raceway in a dominant weekend for last season’s title runner-up.

The Shell V-Power Ford racer opened up a margin of 60 points over David Reynolds after powering to victory in yesterday’s race.

It backs up pole positions in both races and a victory on Saturday.

Reynolds finished second yesterday in the Erebus Racing Holden in a massive boost to his championship chances, while Rick Kelly completed a second consecutive podium in a good weekend for Nissan Motorsport.

McLaughlin came out of his final pit stop behind Reynolds and had to fight for the front spot for a few laps before making the pass.

“We had an awesome rocketship all weekend,” the 24-yearold said.

“I had to fight there a little bit.

“It has been a great weekend. I need to be consistent all year to get it [the championship] done – it is something I didn’t do last year so today was a good start.”

McLaughlin got a major boost after narrowly edging Red Bull Holden Racing’s Jamie Whincup in Saturday’s race when the defending series champ was hit with a post-race penalty that saw him tumble down the order and lose ground in the championship fight.

Team-mate Josef Newgarden has denied Will Power a record fifth pole position for today’s Indycar race in Birmingham, Alabama.

American Newgarden, who used a win at Barber Motorsports Park a year ago as a catapult to the 2017 IndyCar championship title, edged out Power by just 0.0128s to start from pole in Sunday’s Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

Hampstead give it a shot Celtic keeps its top-four place in the combined senior rugby competition standings despite a 27-5 loss to Saracens on Saturday.

Rakaia and Southern are also top four contenders in their section after wins over Hornby and Hurunui.

On the points table, Waihora leads section A with four wins and 21 points over Celtic on 20 points, Southbridge on 18 and Lincoln on 17.

Unbeaten Darfield leads section B with five wins and 22 points, from Rakaia on 20, Prebbleton on 19 and Southern on 16.

Rakaia is the only one of the four to have had the bye round.

Hampstead made a good effort attempting to record its first win of the season, losing 46-25 to BDI in a game featuring 12 tries.

The blue-and-golds conced-

ed two quick tries before they warmed up and were down 14-3 before 10 minutes had elapsed.

But then first-five Malo Talafua broke through the BDI line and drew the last defender before handing off to Mariota Samoa to dot down for the first of Hampstead’s four tries.

It was not converted.

BDI struck back a few minutes later to lead 19-8 but then another offload by Talafua put centre Ben Faasavala over for a try and Romeo Touli made no mistake with the conversion.

Hampstead went into half-time down 19-15 but emerged from the changing sheds re-energised, scoring two quick tries.

Talafua dotted down on his own for the first then started the second with a superb kick and chase, eventually passing out wide to Samoa for the try.

That put Hampstead ahead 2519.

BDI muscled over from forward play for a try five minutes later to trail 24-25, but Hampstead then seemed to run out of steam and the visitors ran in four more in the last 20 minutes for a scoreline that flattered them.

Celtic finally met some stiff opposition in Saracens and came out on the losing side 27-5, while in Section B Rakaia was too good for winless Hornby 64-5 and Southern did enough to keep ahead of Hurunui 36-31.

Methven lost to Kaiapoi 31-24.

The combined competition teams are in action again on Wednesday.

Celtic hosts Southbridge in another tough encounter while Hampstead travel to Ohoka.

Sloppy Crusaders overcome Sunwolves in awful conditions It’s unlikely that the Crusaders imagined beating the Sunwolves would be such hard work.

And it really was hard work – to such an extent that for quite a long period it wasn’t certain they would even win at all.

It certainly wasn’t their best night. They gave plenty of their fringe players a run and introduced Israel Dagg and Owen Franks after their long injury breaks.

And they played like they were

a side hastily thrown together and with little cohesion or knowledge of one another.

It would be remiss, however, not to acknowledge the quality of the Sunwolves and their desire to stay in the game.

They ended up taking a reasonable beating in the end but the thing to be conscious of is that they are getting better.

They appear to be a side that is learning week to week and there

really is no doubt they play with incredible heart and commitment.

For 60 minutes they were genuinely a chance of winning until Ryan Crotty, easily the best player on the park, decided he’d had enough of seeing the Crusaders attack laterally and picked up a loose ball, crashed through the middle and put the Crusaders far enough ahead there was no chance they were going to be caught.

It was a long time coming,

which had plenty to do with the Crusaders lineout being strangely out of sorts. And that’s being kind – it was actually a bit of a disaster and without being able to secure their ball, they couldn’t get their attack game going.

The Sunwolves defended pretty well, too which was also a reason why the Crusaders took so long to find any kind of rhythm.

They lack size but they don’t lack presence and their speed at

the breakdown was a feature of their performance.

And the final mitigating factor was the weather. At one point there was hail literally bouncing off players’ heads and it looked next to impossible to keep a hold of the ball.

It made for a fast, loose, irregular sort of affair that was probably a million miles away from the one-sided romp most people were expecting.

In brief Fittler calls for change Rugby league legends Brad Fittler and Peter Sterling have called for the NRL to change the drop-kick rule which allowed for Billy Slater’s controversial try on Friday night.

Slater was awarded a kick-andchase try in Melbourne’s win over Brisbane, after he was ruled to have drop-kicked the ball close to the line as he attempted to grubber it before he regathered it and scored.

The rule from the bunker caused confusion after Slater himself admitted he dropped the ball and didn’t believe it was a try.

Hastings ‘determined’ Banished Manly rugby league player Jackson Hastings says being outcast by the club has brought him to tears, but he’s determined to learn how to fit in. Hastings has been dropped to the Sea Eagles’ feeder team, with coach Trent Barrett saying the utility is unlikely to be considered for selection this year. It’s due to issues the club says relate to team balance and culture, and Hastings’ inability to get along with his team-mates.

Baabaas three from three The Ashburton Barbarian Rugby League Club made it three wins from three outings in their Canterbury division one competition game against Marist Saints at Robilliard Park on Saturday afternoon.

In what was described as

a game of two halves, Marist looked they had the game in the bag after building a 12-point lead going into halftime.

But the Barbarians dug deep and with 15 minutes left on the clock, finally took the lead.

Some slick moves saw them ex-

tend the scoreline to take the win 36-28.

Spectators said it was a hard fought battle.

The Ashburton side has a bye this Saturday but the club is riding high after a stellar start to the season and a complete overhaul

of the club and its operations.

Manager Matt Milne said last week the group had been focused on getting things right off the paddock and the results had been winning rugby league for the players and their loyal supporters.

South Sydney enforcer Sam Burgess faces another stint on the NRL sidelines as his discipline again comes into question. In what was his first game back from a twoweek suspension, Burgess was lucky not to be sin-binned for a high shot on Aidan Sezer in Saturday’s 42-22 rout of Canberra. Burgess was put on report after collecting the Raiders playmaker around the chin, setting off an all-in melee at Central Coast Stadium.

Brennan slams errors Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan has slammed his side’s “schoolboy errors” against North Queensland and called for a big improvement going forward. Mason Lino – a man whose time has definitely come

T

here’s probably more chance of Donald Trump promoting guacamole as America’s national dish.

But it’s time for Steve Kearney to make the biggest call of his career and promote Mason Lino into the Warriors starters ahead of over rated superstar Shaun Johnson.

Lino has, quite staggeringly, proved he is the future of this club, and the future is now.

To use a cricket analogy, Johnson is like a big fancy outswinger which misses the edge. Lino is the less obvious but better calculated delivery, which sends the batsman on his way.

Friday night’s victory over the Dragons was a very special one in the history of the Warriors.

Like it or not, the Warriors must accept they are in the title winning conversation.

Kearney had every right to be celebrating maybe the best win of his coaching career and let’s face it, when it comes to Kearney’s NRL record there isn’t much to beat.

It was a sensational effort – particularly following the early departure of Tohu Harris – based on defensive fury.

There is the slide defence and the up-and-in defence and then there is the “let’s all go crazy” system, which is what the Warriors used as they responded to a big crowd going berserk.

The straight-aim Lino has now figured in the two best wins of the season, helping drive the surprise smashing of the Roosters in Sydney and ending the Dragons unbeaten record. That is more than coincidence.

There wasn’t a lot of finesse to the Warriors victory this time. But there is terrific heart in that team, and they wore that heart on their

sleeve. The Dragons didn’t know what to do at times. And when a chance fell his way, thanks to some Adam Blair opportunism, little Lino struck to find the tryline like an experienced half in his prime.

I have spent years trying to fall in love with Johnson’s game but came to see him as central to the club’s problems rather than – as was perhaps the initial case – a victim of being too good in New Zealand’s inferior junior football systems.

It is still hard to trust his game, despite the obvious and extreme gifts which include extraordinary stepping ability. He must be a nightmare to defend against, and yet he will always give teams another chance. Now the 27-yearold is injury prone, in and out.

To be fair to Johnson, he has really upped his defence. But Lino has a fantastic attitude – when the Dragons bombed a try down

the left flank early on you couldn’t help but notice it was the little halfback who was flying across in cover.

And I’ve got to confess, Johnson’s petulant “yous got your way” barb at critics after the Kiwis World Cup disaster hasn’t helped.

Apart from turning me against him on an emotional level, it suggests a lack of perspective in Johnson which might be why he has struggled to turn all that incredible promise into something extraordinary. Lino has not only been doing a fantastic job on limited, late-notice opportunity, but he is a player you want to barrack for. Maybe he also helps draw the best out of team-mates.

And the Warriors already have one maverick on the field – middle forward Adam Blair.

Blair’s workrate-per-dollar wouldn’t make for great reading, but the Kiwi captain has the

knack for great plays with and without the ball.

He has, no doubt, had a great effect on the club in general along with others such as a new fitness trainer.

The Warriors have undergone a staggering personality transplant under their phlegmatic coach Kearney.

Blokes like Bunty Afoa are unrecognisable from players who looked shackled and intimidated last year.

Success goes in short cycles in the NRL – the great Melbourne dynasty apart – and so this is, unexpectedly, a season in which the Warriors should aim to make hay while the sun shines.

Kearney can go with the flow and take the transformation one giant step further.

Poster boy Johnson would make a great interchange player. It’s not going to happen of course. - NZME

Win ‘pleasant surprise’ Lisa Allpress was both surprised and full of praise for Saint Emilion after the Cambridge warhorse fought back to score in a thrilling finish to the Gr.3 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

After leading from the outset, the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Saint Emilion was headed early in the run home

by Who Dares Wins and looked set to settle for second placing.

But then inside the final 50 metres he came back determinedly at Who Dares Wins and the pair went to the finish of the $100,000 feature locked in a titanic battle.

Sam Wynne, aboard Who Dares Wins, felt she had won when raising her whip in triumph after the post, but then doubt crept in as she looked across at Allpress and asked who she thought had won.

“Sam was going off and I sat there,” Allpress said.

“I didn’t think I’d got there.

“I knew he was coming back, but the other horse had a neck on me and I didn’t think we’d got up in time.”

But the photo-finish went the way of Saint Emilion by a nose, giving the six-year-old win number 14 in his career, which includes Group One success two starts earlier in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie.

“He’s very tough and he wasn’t going to give in,” Allpress said.

“It was a hard ride and at first I would have been happy for a deadheat, but a win is better.”

Upset win for Kitaya Ghostly grey gelding Kitaya relished the testing underfoot conditions as he sprang a minor upset in the feature sprint at Pukekohe on the weekend. Allowed to freshen up while the hard tracks of summer prevailed, the eight-year-old resumed with a promising showing at Matamata before tackling Saturday’s Haunui Farm 1200.

Ethan outsprints wheelers Thirty riders made the most of a sunny afternoon to take part in the Mid Canterbury Social Wheelers’ first race of its winter series on Saturday.

The handicap race is run on Fords Road, on a 16km out and back course.

Points accumulate over the series with trophies over various grades to be handed out at the end of the series.

Young Ethan Titheridge was the winner of the first race in the 2018 series.

The teen started off the 4.15m mark and got in with a fast group, outsprinting them at the end.

The handicappers were bang on, with all but three riders finishing in close proximity; 13 riders were in the leading group.

The wheelers run both a summer and winter series, encouraging riders of all ages and abilities to take part.

Titheridge was a regular rider in the summer Wednesday night races and a leading

junior in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s Saturday series.

He crossed the line first on Saturday in 29 minutes 57 seconds (actual ride time 25.42).

In the massive sprint for second, Richard Kirwan crossed next in 29.58 and also recorded the fastest ride time of 23.43, followed in turn by Michael Gallagher, Ross Templeton, Rob Hooper and Paul Summerfield.

The rest of the field, in finishing order, comprised Matt Marshall, Kristine Marriott, Shona Proctor, Andrew Shepherd, Matthew Clough, Bruce McClelland, Don Morrison, Pam Harcourt, Kerry Clough, Shane Gerken, Dave Shurrock, Doug Coley, Brian Ellis, Nigel Chatterton, Michael Templeton, Tony Ward, Paul Houston, Liz Wylie, Janette Hooper, Ross Proctor, Lucy Kirwan, Colin Teahen, Don Sutton and Brent Hudson.
