Local doctors swamped BY CAITLIN PORTER

Newcomers are finding it hard to find a general practitioner in Mid Canterbury as the ratio of patients to doctors grows, observers say. The Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation has confirmed the ratio of patients to equivalent full-time GPs under its umbrella is 2182 to one. It was 1918 to one this time last year which was also higher than the historical national average of 1400 to one.
Methven Medical Centre’s PHO, Pegasus Health Ltd, confirmed the practice had nearly 4000 enrolled patients and five full-time equivalent doctors. The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) confirmed there was now no national standard as to doctor/patient ratios. The ratio depended on the practice. Doctors at Mid Canterbury practices referred the Guardian to Mid Canterbury GPs’ spokeswoman Charlotte Cox, who was unavailable for comment.
However, Rural Women New Zealand national vice-president Kerry Maw, of Dorie, said the growing ratio was a concern and some people found it difficult to register at a practice. Newcomers to Ashburton, particularly, found it very difficult. It was also difficult to get same-day appointments unless it was urgent, she said. Mrs Maw said the pressure on Ashburton doctors could be eased by clinics in smaller areas such as Mayfield or Hinds. Attracting more GPs to Mid
Canterbury was also important, she said. Timaru Plunket clinical leader Raylene Todd agreed the ratio made it hard for some families to enrol with a GP in Mid Canterbury, particularly for those new to the area. It also made it difficult to transfer or change GPs, she said. Ashburton is part of the Voluntary Bonding Scheme, which is supported by Rural Women and the RNZCGP. The scheme encourages medical graduates to enter into com-
munities and specialties that needed their services most. In 2013, five GP trainees joined and in 2014 that increased to 20. It has previously been reported that the creation of zoning has also helped to relieve pressure on practices. The RNZCGP said it too was aware of issues such as enrolment and wait listing surrounding rural and provincial practices in New Zealand.
