Ashburton police are dealing with more than one family violence incident every day of the year but Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield believes this could just be the tip of the iceberg. Speaking yesterday to Ashburton District councillors, Banfield spelled out a range of crime statistics and said that across family violence and child abuse there was a significant workload for his staff. “Family harm could be anything from a loud argument to the risk of someone

being hurt. A lot still goes unreported,” he said. systems in place that ensured many organisations could have an impact in this area, he said. “Often it’s not just a case of police getting the bad guy and locking them up, there’s a lot of work done in the background.” When it came to suicide, police were not provided with the numbers, Banfield said.
