a long-running dispute between itself and trainers Danny Champion and Kezia Murphy was handled.

The trainers’ home and training base is on land leased by the racing club from the Ashburton District Council. The training partnership in turn leases the land and buildings from the racing club for which it pays market rental. The pair also pay to use the track at the Ashburton Raceway for training.

Baby girl for Fraser Kiwi pop star Brooke Fraser has given birth to a baby girl. Fraser used Instagram to announce the birth of her daughter Dylan Wilde Ligertwood with a photograph of two small feet. Dylan, born on Friday, is the singer’s first child. Fraser teamed up with Lorde, Kimbra, the All Blacks and other celebrities uncharacteristically rapping in the charity single Team Ball Player Thing released this month.

The single is raising money for Cure Kids for the battle against Batten disease – a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Fraser released her fourth album Brutal Romance in April and performed a three-date New Zealand tour in June.She had originally planned a 10-date tour in March and April, but cancelled it in December last year citing scheduling conflicts.

Westpac’s coupon scheme As competition heats up among banks, Westpac has introduced a coupon scheme through its ATMs with discount offers from local businesses. It includes things like free coffee and burgers at discount prices. The bank says customers using Westpac ATMs will have the option of choosing four offers and redeem that coupon at local businesses.The concept was trialled for eight weeks at two Westpac ATMs in downtown Auckland. Westpac says some local businesses that participated reported redemption rates of around 20 per cent during the trial, which it says is very high for coupon redemption advertising.

Disgruntled rugby fan A disgruntled South African rugby fan has sold his Springbok jersey on Trade Me after his side’s stunning loss to Japan on Monday.

The seller, arsenalboy, took to the site in a huff with a somewhat foggy photo of an XL jersey he said was bought in the 1990s.

“What a joke,” he wrote. “I could never wear it with any semblance of pride again. Could be used as a door mat – with Argentina and now Japan walking all over us.” Japan’s 34-32 win over the two-time Rugby World Cup champions shocked the rugby world and has been dubbed one of the tournament history’s greatest upsets ever.

The ex-Springbok fan gave full credit to the Japanese team for the win, saying: “They totally deserved it. As for the Springboks, I’m over them. So someone else can have this jersey.” Several traders asked whether he was actually wanting to pay someone to take the jersey off his hands.

Methven’s Janine Peters and Olie Body will this week fulfil a long-held dream at the World of Wearable Arts Awards in Wellington.

The mother-daughter duo will see their entry, Honey Honey Kiss Me, paraded down the international art and fashion event catwalk.

Ms Peters said she and Ms Body, 21, had been aware of the competition for a number of years, and had attended as audience members for the last three.

“It was just something we thought we would love to do,” she said.

The pair are both artists; Ms Peters works as a graphic designer while Ms Body, a former Mount Hutt College pupil, is at Massey University in Wellington, studying communication and expressive arts.

They work well together, having painted the set for the Methven Theatre Company’s Noises Off ! last year, and having jointly created props.

“This is the biggest thing we have ever done together,” Ms Peters said.

“Living in different islands

hasn’t been ideal for the long artistic process.”

However, by having some weeks of intense creativity while in the same place, they had managed to get the bulk of the outfit’s construction done together.

Described as “the hexagon reflecting its architect”, the garment’s materials include Perspex mirror, beeswax, silver wire and paper. One thing they had learned was that beeswax becomes soft when it comes into contact with the warmth of human skin.

“We had quite a few attempts at various things and it sort of morphed. What we ended up with was different to the initial concept, but that’s quite normal in the creation process,” Ms Peters said.

The garment had passed the initial photo submission process, then the next tough stage of being viewed in Nelson alongside other hopeful constructions.

It is now in Wellington awaiting the award ceremony.

“It’s phenomenal; to think that our humble little garment is going to be part of that is very exciting,” Ms Peters said.

About $2000 was raised for CanTeen at Mount Hutt College’s Top the Knot on Friday night.

Organised by head boy Rhys Fitzgerald, the event saw about 50 people attend, many participating in strong bidding. Bidding grew more enthusiastic as the evening went on, peaking at the final auction where deputy head boy Cameron McLeod lost his hair for $300. “All the boys went home fashioning some interesting haircuts, which will be getting tidied up sometime this week,” Rhys said. People were still welcome to donate to the cause on an especially-created Give a Little page.

One person has died in a collision between a car and a truck in the Waimana Gorge in the Bay of Plenty. Fire Service spokesman Scott Osmond said firefighters were called to the scene at 2.14pm yesterday. The incident occurred on State Highway 2 in the gorge, between Whakatane and Opotiki, about 1.5km south of Stanley Rd. The car driver was believed to have died in the crash, Mr Osmond said. “All I know is that it’s a truck versus a car, and I believe the car occupant is deceased,” he said.

Champion and Murphy are the largest thoroughbred training establishment in the Ashburton District and it was touch and go whether they would have stayed or not, he said.

The couple plan to stay in the district.

“But there’s a hell of a lot of work and money involved in setting up again,” Ms Murphy said.

She believes the issues could be sorted out through mediation, but the club refused to be involved in this process.

For two years they had been trying to have work carried out on their stables and grounds and had even offered to pay higher rental to ensure this happened.

“Give them time, that was all I wanted; let them leave with dignity.”

Because the eviction was a done deal, the pair now needed “to get on with the show”, he said.

They were given an eviction notice in early June.

A two-week extension means they must move their 18 horses and 10 years of business by Sunday.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by industry support, but we feel let down by the fact that there is no-one to oversee the club decision, there’s been no mediation.”

Club president David Jones does not believe that there is a role for an intermediary to step in.

“We don’t need a mediator, we’re grown men,” he said.

The club did not want to get into publicly debating the rights and wrongs of the eviction, but said what was done was done legally.

Three written warnings had been followed by three months’ notice.

“Why would you want to kick someone out whose got young horses unless it was serious?”

It was disappointing to have lost three long-serving committee members over the issue, but the three all had horses with the Champion-Murphy stable so were wearing two hats, Mr Jones said.

When the dust had settled over the eviction, Mr Jones said that the racing club would take another look at the property and decide where to from here.

It could be re-let or it could be sold, he said.

A man has been arrested after allegedly making threats with a firearm in the Far North.

Police deployed the Armed Offenders Squad to a Waima address at 3.26pm yesterday after reports that the middle-aged man had made threats. He was arrested soon after without any incident.

Rotorua death Investigations are under way into the death of a man in police custody, shortly after he was picked up by emergency services in the Rotorua CBD. The 52-yearold man, who was believed to be intoxicated, died in the Rotorua police custody hub on Saturday afternoon. Police spokeswoman Kim Perks confirmed the man was from Rotorua and said his name would be released once all next of kin had been informed.

Stabbing 29-year-old Hastings man is in a critical condition after a domestic-related stabbing in Flaxmere early Sunday morning.

Police were called to a Cartier Cres house around 2.30am and found the man bleeding profusely from a stab wound to the chest.

Police believe the incident was domestic-related. The man was taken to Hawke’s Bay Regional Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Still chasing Novopay debts

News that the government may call in debt collectors to retrieve money overpaid by the troubled payroll system Novopay is just part of an ongoing sorry saga, according to a Mid Canterbury principal.

The Ministry of Education is chasing up $2.5 million in debt owed by about 2250 staff who were overpaid due to Novopay errors. It is currently reviewing when debt collection will resume on the remaining overpayments, but Mid Canterbury Principals Association president Chris Murphy says that

won’t help to restore confidence in the controversial system.

“It’s the ongoing sorry saga that is Novopay,” he said.

“I’m glad they finally seem to be catching up with historic difficulties and problems within the system, but it does nothing for the confidence of the sector in our payroll system.”

Mr Murphy, who is the principal at Methven Primary School, said he knew of one teacher who was mistakenly paid $19,000 while on maternity leave - an issue that took 18 months to rectify.

Shannon said there was still a backlog of overpayments to teachers and other staff that needed to be resolved.

“Those overpayments should never have happened, which is why we have given staff plenty of time to repay those amounts,” she said.

“The vast majority of school staff, including teachers, have responded really well to meeting their obligations to repay overpayments.”

Nearly 90 per cent of $16.8m in overpayments have been either fully repaid or are in arrangements for repayment.

However, there is still an out-

standing $2.5m where no repayment arrangement has been entered into. Debt collection was suspended in March 2013, and the ministry are currently reviewing when debt collection will resume on the remaining overpayments.

The education sector would be consulted before any steps to resume debt collection were taken, Ms Shannon said.

“In the past, we have found that only a very small number of people fail to enter into repayment agreements before the matter goes to a debt collection agency.”

“Most do the right thing.”

Ashburton College receives share of $48,000

Ashburton College is now able to better sort its recyclables after being one of a dozen secondary schools to share in a $48,000 eco-friendly prize pool.

The secondary school last week received two purposebuilt stainless steel recycling bins worth $4000 designed to hold beverage containers.

Head of Ashburton College’s Environment Committee Ruby Wills entered the school in the nationwide competition.

“We had to answer questions about how big the school was, how [it] recycles and why we think we should be chosen,” Miss Wills said.

As the largest secondary school in the district, Miss Wills stated on the application that the things children learned at Ashburton College trickled through into the wider community.

“It benefits the whole of Ashburton,” she said.

The bins, funded by a Keep New Zealand Beautiful Bev-

erage Container Community Grants programme are designed to prevent aluminum, glass and plastic bottles being thrown out with general school waste.

Each bin comes with a ten year warranty and a price tag of more than $2000 to manufacture, sign write and deliver.

Miss Wills said the school had to determined where was best to place the bins and so areas near the field and the chessboard were chosen due to high foot traffic.

Prior to receiving the bins last week there was no school-wide recycling initiative in place.

College executive officer Charlie Kelland said Miss Wills did a lot of work with both the application process and determining how the bins would benefit the school.

The programme was organised by the Environmental Education for Resource Sustainability Trust (EERST) and partly funded by a Keep NZ Beautiful community recycling programme grant.

The death of a Methven-area man killed in a head-on crash near Dunsandel on Sunday night has been described as “incredibly sad”.

Police yesterday named Finlay William Dunning, 20, who lived in the Methven area, as the man killed in the crash on SH1 Main South Road at 5pm

Vehicle shot at A Hawke’s Bay man escaped serious injury after his vehicle was shot at on the side of the road on Friday night. The man, who works as a commercial cleaner, had pulled off the road on the HB Expressway near the intersection with Links Rd for a sleep. He was abruptly woken around 11.30pm when two shots were fired at the back of his stationwagon.

The shots went through the back window and a back panel, narrowly missing him, police said in a statement yesterday. - NZME

A man was flown to Southland Hospital with serious head injuries after a car accident near Ohai on Sunday morning. Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said it was unclear what caused the Toyota Land Cruiser to crash at Wairio about 1am. No other vehicles were involved. Emergency Services from Winton and Ohai and a serious crash unit from Invercargill attended the scene.

The age of the man was not available, Mr Brown said. - NZME

A fire on Te Mata Peak that destroyed a hectare of vegetation is being treated as suspicious.

The rural fire force is investigating the blaze which engulfed pine and blue gum trees, with flames reaching about 1.5m. Two fire trucks, a tanker and rural fire vehicles were called to the scene at about 5.27am on Friday, a spokesman for the Heretaunga Rural Fire Force said. It took five hours to put out the blaze. - NZME

An elderly Auckland man who was missing for five days has died in hospital. William “Bill” Davies died on Sunday at North Shore Hospital, two days after he turned 75. Mr Davies went missing earlier this month from after he left a care facility in Albany. He was found on a golf course five days later. During the five days he was missing he did not have food, care or medication. He was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

“Spending five days out in poor weather took a massive toll on Bill’s already fragile health,” says Rebecca Stitt of SUB Football, which Mr Davies founded. “We are thankful that his family were able to spend his last days with him, and we are proud to continue his legacy of SUB Football - the game he loved.”

Elderly man dies

on Sunday.

Sergeant Franco Lovrich said a north-bound Toyota Surf appeared to have collided with the driver’s side of the south-bound Subaru station wagon Mr Dunning was driving.

Mr Dunning was the driver and sole occupant of the Subaru.

The three men in the Toyota were taken to Christchurch

Hospital by ambulance and kept in overnight while their injuries were assessed, Sergeant Lovrich said. Canterbury Police and Victim Support are working with Mr Dunning’s family.

Mr Dunning was believed to have lived in Parnell, and attended Auckland Grammar School before transferring to Takapuna Grammar School at the start of Year 12.

Takapuna Grammar School deputy principal Brian Wynn said it was sad to lose Mr Dunning, who was described as a “nice boy”.

“It’s always sad to lose one of our former pupils,” he said.

“It’s terrible.”

Investigations into the crash are continuing, and Mr Dunning’s death has been referred to the coroner.

A call for New Zealand to toughen up on the international use of the death penalty is being welcomed by at least one politician. Two leading Australian experts are at Parliament today, hoping to persuade the Government to use its influence to try to stop the use of capital punishment.

United Future leader Peter Dunne is meeting them. He said New Zealand should be using its UN Security Council seat to push for the change. Mr Dunne said he saw the practice as reprehensible, and New Zealand should not be scared of asking allies such as the United States and China to stop.

Hoping for good weather

Retailer Bob McDonald says he’s had a word with the weather gods and he reckons when the crowds roll into town for this year’s Boulevard Day, the sun will be shining.

Shopping will go streetside on Monday for Ashburton’s 39th annual bargain hunters’ day out and after icy temperatures and high winds turned crowds away last year, the event is due for a weather bonus, Mr McDonald said.

In spite of last year’s event being marred by bad weather and gaps where stall holders opted to stay home rather than brave the elements, this year’s event has attracted probably its strongest amount of interest, he said.

“We’ve had a good uptake of stalls, we’re just about chocka-block and the late comers are still coming in.”

And it’s not just out-of-towners who are keen to take part, local retailers and craft people are also lining up to secure one of the street-side stall spaces.

More than 50 per cent of stall holders this year are coming from within the Ashburton District.

They’ll be supplemented by a wide range of stall holders from around the South Island.

Fatal house fire One man is dead after trying to rescue children last night in a house fire. The block of flats where a man died is about 100m from the Western Park Village on Swanson St. Residents told the Herald they saw medical staff working on a man for sometime outside the property. “It was sad to see. They were working on him for a while.”

The neighbours said they understood that the man, in his 60s, had been trying to get back into the house to get a number of children out.

Wild weather Wild weather lashing the central North Island created havoc yesterday with torrential rain causing slips, overnight road closures and rapidly-rising rivers.

Gisborne was hardest hit, with 114mm of rain recorded in 24 hours, and floodwaters forcing the closure of State Highway 2 from Opotiki to Gisborne. A second stretch of State Highway 2 was later closed - from Napier and Wairoa - after the highway flooded near the small settlement of Turiroa. It’s going to be a wet week for most of the lower North Island and parts of the South Island - with Wairarapa, Marlborough Sounds and Wellington in the firing line for heavy rain and strong winds.

Teenagers warned about safety Operators of a free shuttle bus in Methven are warning teenagers not to joyride the bus’s back bumper bar after a couple of incidents on Friday night.

Methven Travel operates the Village Cruiser on a non-profit basis each ski season.

The company employs drivers and provides the bus to cruise around Methven from 5pm to 9pm, transporting tourists and residents to town shops and venues.

Office manager Jodie Monk said the bus driver on Friday night had had to

stop the bus upon realising there was a young male on the back bumper bar, who then ran off.

While the bus travelled quite slowly, it was a potentially deadly past time.

“Our drivers would be absolutely devastated if something happened,” Mrs Monk said.

She urged parents to talk to their teenagers about such dangers.

She believed the young man was part of a group, and there had been a couple of incidents in the same night, perhaps by the same male.

Train death A man in a wheelchair was killed when he was struck by a freight train on the Kapiti Coast yesterday.

The incident happened at the Paraparaumu railway station just before 11.30am. “He was in a wheelchair and early indications are he’s fallen off the platform. A freight train was coming through at the time,” police Inspector Mike Coleman said.

Sumatran tiger escapes euthanasia Hamilton Zoo’s male Sumatran tiger Oz will not be euthanised following the death of Zoo Curator Samantha Kudeweh.

Lance Vervoort, Hamilton City Council’s general manager community, said although Samantha’s death was a tragedy for the wider zoo family and international wildlife conservation community, senior zoo staff have ruled out euthanising Oz.

“We’re aware there is a lot of interest and speculation around how we manage Oz now, and I want to assure the public and zoo supporters that he will not be put down,” Mr Vervoort says.

Longbeach celebrates Country Day Longbeach School was taken over by hay, gumboots, and all manner of farm animals as it marked Country Day yesterday.

The annual event sees pupils and their families take part in a range of activities, all aimed at celebrating the school’s rural environment.

A group of keen Dads set up the ever popular Young Farmers competition, while lambs, ponies, calves, and even a baby possum converged on the school for the traditional pet parade.

Principal Neil Simons said the event, which has been running for several years, enjoyed “great” support from the community.

Caesarean births remain relatively steady in Ashburton

Injured schoolboy slowly improving

As the boy who was struck in the head by an electric fence post at his Invercargill school recovers in hospital, another pupil involved in the incident remained at home today.

After the incident at Sacred Heart School on Friday morning, a 10-year-old was taken to Southland Hospital and then transferred to Dunedin, where he underwent surgery.

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old boy has been spoken to by police. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey said that boy hadn’t returned to school yet. He was “pretty upset” and was taking time to recover.

Mr Harvey said police were nearing the end of their investigation into the incident.

“There’s just some inquiries we’re doing today and hopefully by the end of the day we should just about be finished.

While the number of women having caesarean births increases nationally, Ashburton’s numbers remain relatively steady.

The Ministry of Health’s 2012 report on maternity showed caesareans have increased from 22.7 per cent in 2003 to 25.3 per cent in 2012.

During the last financial year 110 Ashburton women had caesareans performed at Christchurch Hospital.

Prior to that there were 112 in the year 2013/14 and 100 in 2012/2013.

So far this financial year there have been 26.

Within all Canterbury District Health Board facilities 5720 women had caesareans during the last financial year, up from 5623 in 2013/14.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology vice president Stephen Robson said the strongest influences to the rate of caesareans were obesity and older women having babies.

“We all know the population of obese women having babies is increasing rapidly, and the great increase in birth rate is now in women aged 40 and over, who have a very high chance of caesarean section,” Mr Robson said.

As well, he said, most women who had a caesarean section for their first baby opt to have a planned caesarean next time.

Caesarean sections are performed when it is safer than attempting a vaginal birth and are broken into two categories – elective and emergency.

Elective caesareans are those that are planned and performed

before labour starts; for example when the baby is in breech, the placenta is low, or if a woman has had an emergency caesarean in the past and it is unsafe to try for a vaginal birth, Mr Robson explained.

Emergency caesareans are those that were not planned, for example when the baby’s head will not fit through the pelvis or if the baby is not tolerating the labour.

Mr Robson said having emergency or planned caesareans both carry risk.

With a planned caesarean there is very little risk to the baby except when the birth occurs earlier than 38 weeks.

However, women who have more than three caesarean sections are more at risk due to the danger of complications with the placenta growing into the uterine muscle.

“What I’d describe it as is an incident that occurred when two boys have been playing as boys do.”

Police were yet to speak to the hospitalised 10-year-old, but were in contact with his family.

“He’s slowly improving. He’s out of the coma.

He’s actually talking to his parents and his family and they are looking at moving him into the children’s ward, out of ICU,” Mr Harvey said.

“We’re just thankful that he’s recovering, but he’s still got a way to go.”

A Ministry of Education specialist trauma team was at Sacred Heart School today, which was open as normal.

Board of trustees chairman Paul Brooks said the team included counsellors, although he was unable to say how long it would be there for.

Thousands left homeless More than 9000 people were left homeless after a powerful earthquake hit northern and central Chile last week, officials say, dramatically increasing previous estimates.

The death toll from the 8.3 magnitude quake that struck on September 16 remained at 13, with four still missing, said Deputy Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy.

But the number of people left homeless jumped drastically from 3500, as officials scour remote towns in the Coquimbo region, more than 260 kilometres north of Santiago, where the quake epicentre was located.

“We hope that by Friday we will have surveyed all of the people who were affected,” Aleuy said.

The offshore earthquake was the sixth strongest in the history of geologically volatile Chile and the most powerful anywhere in the world this year, officials say.

Public Works Minister Alberto Undurraga toured the city yesterday, and said that only 25 per cent of the area’s clean-up work had been completed.

The tsunami crashed ashore just minutes after about one million people were evacuated from the shoreline following the quake.

The human toll was far lower than in February 2010, when an 8.8-magnitude quake and tsunami left 500 people dead.

Chilean authorities have yet to put a financial figure on the damage, but it is not expected to come anywhere near the $US30 billion ($NZ41.77 billion) - 18 per cent of Chile’s GDP - suffered five years ago.

The national emergency service ONEMI reported that 647 homes were destroyed, 1183 families were without power and 2400 were without drinking water.

Euthanasia not always the answer Sue Newman

F

or anyone working with wild animals, there is always an inherent risk.

No matter how stringent the safety precautions, there will inevitably be situations that noone could plan for, situations where a human is exposed, where a wild animal becomes exactly that, where instinct takes over.

The death of a senior zookeeper after she was attacked by a Sumatran tiger was a tragedy.

It’s unclear what happened, but something went wrong and Samantha Kudeweh died.

As well as asking why, the immediate question has been, what happens now?

If a dog bites a human, chances are it will be euthanised, but should that be the case for an animal that is bred to live in the wild but is forced to suffer human intervention?

History shows that similar incidents have automatically signed the death warrant of the animal concerned, but there was a huge public outcry for the zoo to pause and take stock.

Euthanasia should not be automatic, many said.

Internationally vast amounts of money are spent protecting endangered species, establishing breeding programmes and ensuring those increasingly rare animals are able to be seen, even inside an artificial habitat.

There are fewer than 400 of these tigers living in their only natural habitat, Sumatra, and zoos such as Hamilton are doing an outstanding job, helping to build numbers to ensure the big cats are here for the future.

If this tiger had been euthanised, New Zealand’s breeding progamme could have ground to a halt.

Killing the tiger would have achieved nothing.

It was behaving exactly as its natural instincts drove it to behave.

Years of captivity would be nothing against decades of breeding that would have driven the animal to behave exactly as it did, a wild animal.

The zoo is to be commended for its decision to let the tiger live.

Distracted drivers On Facebook, Guardian readers discussed the crackdown on inattentive drivers: When driving, you should be concentrating 100 per cent on driving and watching out for any possible hazards. Other-

wise you are being a potential hazard to all the other drivers.

We have far too high a road toll already.

I don’t drive yet but four of my friends have been killed in four separate car crashes (between 1992 and 2013) and in one of those crashes seven young people were killed at once! Two of those crashes killed mothers of young children.

If you need to eat, apply make-up, text, call, or anything else while driving pull over and take time to do it safely. What is better? A few minutes late or someone dying because you decided to multi-task while driving?! If your phone is a distraction put it on silent. Keeping yourself and others safe should be your only priority.

eremy “Jez” Corbyn (above right) and Bernie Sanders (left) are very much alike, and so are their ambitions.

Corbyn wants to lead Britain’s Labour Party into the next election and become prime minister; Sanders wants to win the Democratic Party nomination and become the next president of the United States. And then each man plans to turn his country sharply to the left.

To the vast surprise of practically everybody, Corbyn has just achieved the first stage of his master plan: on Saturday, he became the leader of the Labour Party. When he entered the leadership contest, the bookmakers were quoting odds of 200-to-one against him, but he ended up winning the leadership by a landslide.

Senator Sanders was also seen as a complete no-hoper when he threw his hat into the ring: 74 years old (Corbyn is 66), no money and no wellhoned political machine behind him (ditto), and far too leftwing to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, let alone the presidency.

But something unexpected is also happening with Sanders’ campaign.

There were no other highprofile candidates for the Democratic nomination: most people assumed that it was Hillary Clinton’s for the asking. But then Sanders began to creep up on her, especially in the two states where the first primaries will be held, New Hampshire and Iowa. The last three polls have shown Sanders

leading Clinton in New Hampshire by an average margin of 7.5 per cent and he is now 1 per cent ahead in Iowa too.

Sanders is not as far left as Corbyn, of course. No elected US politician is as far left as Corbyn, who promises to nationalise the railways and energy companies, scrap university tuition fees, bring back rent controls, raise taxes and introduce a national maximum wage to cap the wages of bankers and other high earners, impose an arms embargo on Israel and get rid of Britain’s nuclear weapons.

When asked if there were any circumstances under which he would deploy British armed forces abroad, Corbyn replied: “I’m sure there are some but I can’t think of them at the moment.”

He’s a republican, although he says that ending the monarchy is “not the fight I’m interested in”. He’s a vegetarian who does not own a car, and he looks a little like Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is, in other words, the Real McCoy. Bernie Sanders, by contrast, lives in the United States, where many people regard “democratic socialism” as akin to devil worship. He favours universal healthcare funded by

taxes (supported by all parties in Britain) and publicly funded elections with strict limits on corporate donations (ditto), and he too advocates free higher education and higher taxes on the rich. That’s already “socialist” in an American political context.

But he’s not planning to nationalise anything, bring in rent controls, end all American military interventions overseas, or ban arms sales to Israel.

Whatever his private opinons may be, he is running for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, and nobody in the Democratic Party has advocated anything that radical within living memory.

Sanders is as far left within the American political spectrum (which doesn’t extend very far in that direction) as Corbyn is within the broader British spectrum. Could he really pull off a Corbyn-style upset and win the Democratic nomination?

It depends on whether Hillary Clinton’s current stumbles end in a big fall in her support. It could happen. Last week’s opinon polls revealed that she had lost her lead over her two likeliest Republican opponents in next year’s presidential election, Jeb Bush or Ben Carson – and even Donald Trump was drawing level with her.

The Democratic National Convention is still 10 months away, but it’s already late for anybody other than vice-president Joe Biden to enter the race with a good chance of winning – and Biden is deeply conflicted

about running. So if Clinton fades, Sanders would have a chance: the odds against him are already a good deal shorter than 200-to-one. Whether he could actually win the presidency is a different question.

British pundits were unanimous in saying that Corbyn has no chance of winning a national election and becoming prime minister. Former Labour leader and prime ministerTony Blair went further: “If Jeremy Corbyn becomes leader it won’t be a defeat like 1983 or 2015 at the next election. It will mean rout, possibly annihilation.”

But Labour just lost the last election, and the next one is five years away. There is still time to change horses if Corbyn isn’t working out. Whereas the US election is next year.

Could Sanders win it? The professional pundits and pollsters in the United States say no, because he’s too far from the mainstream.

Sanders just points to the despair that grips so many middle-class Americans as the rich get ever richer and their own living standards stagnate.

“Don’t let anybody tell you that we’re radical, that we’re outside the mainstream. We are the mainstream.”

He could be right: it’s the same despair with business as usual that has pushed Donald Trump out in front of the Republican nomination race.

And that would be something, wouldn’t it? Bernie Sanders vs. Donald Trump for the presidency. At last Americans get a real choice.

House of Hearing steady and growing

Mid Cantabrians with hearingaids or who suffer from hearing problems now have a full-time audiologist on hand.

A privately owned company, House of Hearing made the move to Ashburton after recognising the need in the district for a full-time audiology clinic.

Audiologist Ron Trounson said there was a great need in Ashburton, particularly for people with hearing aids as well as those suffering from noise exposure.

“We’re steadily busy and growing, we do have people five

days a week coming in,” he said.

“There is a lot of noise exposure in this town with the farmers and the freezing works and various other parts around the place,” Mr Trounson said.

Prior to the business moving to Mid Canterbury Mr Trounson said audiologists were travelling down from Christchurch or up from Timaru to see patients.

While Mr Trounson travels from Halswell where he manages another clinic, he spends five days a week in Ashburton.

However if demand increased here, Mr Trounson said he could look at relocating.

Prime Minister John Key has given a guarded view of New Zealand’s chance of striking the “high quality” deal it has always sought in the 12 nation TransPacific Partnership trade and investment negotiations, saying that “at least it will be the very best we can do.”

International reports suggest a final ministerial meeting will be held from September 26 in Atlanta, Georgia, to try to conclude the TPP talks, ahead of next week’s congregation of global leaders in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, where Key says he will putting pressure to conclude TPP high on his agenda.

Asked at his weekly post-Cabinet press conference yesterday whether New Zealand would walk away from a new Asia- Pacific area trade pact for lack of a strong enough deal on dairy market access, Key said that New Zealand was still “a long way from being in the best place we could on dairy.”

“In the end, we will still hopefully land in the right place.

“At least it will be the very best we can do.”

A leading TPP opponent, Auckland University law professor Jane Kelsey, said in a statement late last week that while there appeared to be progress on the contentious issue of automobile trade protectionism - a key issue between Japan and the US - there was little sign of progress on two other key issues:

patent extensions for so-called biologic drugs and dairy market access.

“In contrast to autos, there has been no noise about dairy at all,” Kelsey said. “This lends support to the view expressed to me by informed people in other countries that autos is the big issue and once that is settled dairy is not expected to delay a final agreement.

“Put another way, (Trade Minister Tim) Groser is expected to swallow the rat, rather than hold up the deal, and wear the flak at home by saying New Zealand couldn’t afford not to be part of the TPPA.” - NZME

43 jobs may be axed at Westland Milk Products

BY LEE SCANLON Westland Milk Products (WMP) may axe 43 jobs as a result of its staffing review, announced last

week, saving the company about $2.5 million a year.

In a letter to shareholders and suppliers, chief executive Rod Quinn said 32 positions

might be disestablished.

Mr Quin said Westland had already deferred recruitment for a further 11 current vacancies.

“The discontinued positions,

if confirmed, are expected to save Westland approximately $2.5 million a year,” the letter said.

“Redundancies are proposed

to occur over a five-month period, with around 13 positions in September/October and the remainder around February.”

MARKET REPORT Dairy After some hot days last week, a weekend of rain in the region was a welcome replenishment for soil reserves, but warm temperatures again are the missing ingredient for maximising spring growth rates.

The signs of spring in pastures, daffodils, and blossoms also returned to last week’s dairy auction as prices rose by a massive 16.5 per cent, led by whole milk powder values of US $2500/tonne.

The ever optimistic ASB dairy analysts lifted the predicted payout to $5/ kg, and suggested production will drop by 5 per cent over last year’s figures on the back of a slow spring and reduced cow numbers.

A small amount of optimism returned to the Fonterra Shareholders Fund with values lifting above $5 for the first time since the autumn, giving farmers some hope for the future.

Westland have followed Fonterra, in restructuring staff numbers to align costs with the reduced milk price as the whole sector adjusts to the downturn and dairy farm values falling by 37 per cent from the highs of last year.

Some negativity has been heard from shareholders associated with the increased foreign control of this deal, but such is the financial strength of this proposal that includes a dividend payout and huge lift in share value, it seems improbable that this will not go ahead.

Wool This week’s North Island auction saw values ease on a lifting currency and buyers reluctant to push prices from last week’s yearly highs.

Coarse wool values are at their highest levels since late in 2011 and with few stocks held and sheep numbers low, prospects look good for the oncoming season.

Merino values are also on the up, and last week’s Melbourne sale continued this momentum after the previous year’s low prices has seen many high country growers changing breeds to crossbreds for lamb production.

Lamb prices are creeping up in value responding to the lower currency and shortage of supply, and Beef and Lamb NZ’s prediction of fewer lambs born this year will make processing competition fierce for the remaining stock.

More lifts in venison schedules as prices move closer to the $9/kg level, helped significantly by the exchange rate that is about 12 to 15 per cent lower now than at a similar stage last year.

With venison production falling and these prices at sustainable levels, some reinvestment in young females is sure to reoccur to tighten supply further, but more experienced deer farmers will be wary of returning to the boom-bust scenario of the past.

Velvet market signals are too early to predict, but the uncertainty caused by the Chinese sharemarket will be compensated somewhat by a more positive currency position.

Cool spring stunts grass

Good conditions in the autumn may have gone some way toward offsetting the impact of a cold spring, but grass growth is still 10 days behind in many parts of Mid Canterbury.

Chris Allen, who farms at Greenstreet, plans the start of his lambing season to coincide with the willow trees coming into leaf.

“We’ve been struggling, we

are still supplement feeding the ewes,” Mr Allen said.

“We are at least 10 days behind where we would like to be. We’ve started lambing at the same time for the past 21 years, because the grass growth generally starts with the willows coming out.

We’ve been lambing for 12 days and the willows are just coming out now.”

Despite the cooler spring soil temperatures, Mr Allen said the

stock had come through the winter well, supplemented by grain.

His biggest concern heading into summer is the low aquifer levels. “It’s been damp and slushy on top, but we haven’t had the rain we need to recharge the aquifers.

If we get nor’westers with the El Nino on the horizon it could spell trouble.

Methven dairy farmer Jeremy Duckmanton has used slightly less supplementary feed than last year,

on the back of a mild autumn, but he knows of some farmers who haven’t been as fortunate. “The lack of grass has been difficult, but we are away now, the southerly coming through over the next day or so might slow things down, but the moisture will be good,” Mr Duckmanton said.

DairyNZ Mid Canterbury consultant Erin Christian said grass growth had been slow across the district.

She said it was important to keep up with fertiliser application and stick to stock rotation.

“A lot of people have had to put in more supplements than they would like to over spring – with the milk price as it is they would prefer to avoid the extra cost,” Mrs Christian said.

“Surprisingly there has been some crop leftover from winter and some people have been harvesting it and bringing it back to

Silver Fern Farms roadshow heading to Ashburton

Silver Fern Farms shareholders and suppliers will have the opportunity to discuss the proposed partnership with Chinese-owned Shanghai Maling with the co-operative’s leaders in Ashburton next week.

The roadshow was flagged

by Silver Fern Farms chairman Rob Hewett when he announced the proposed Shanghai Maling deal last week.

Mr Hewett, board members and the company’s CEO Dean Hamilton kicked off the tour in Balclutha on Thursday, hoping to convince shareholders to tick the yes box in a vote to determine whether the cooperative takes the $260 million dollar offer.

In return Shanghai Maling will assume 50 per cent ownership of Silver Fern. The remaining 50 per cent will be

But Mr Reveley also knew of farmers who were struggling to keep hungry mouths fed as a result of the slow start to spring, in particular those in the back country.

While the current board unanimously recommended the partnership, it needs upward of 50 per cent of the vote to get the proposal across the line.

Mr Hewett said the deal could be done without farmer approval, however the board had decided shareholder buy in was critical to the company’s future growth.

Silver Fern Farms management has already met with wary union delegates in an attempt to satisfy them jobs and conditions will not be sacrificed if the deal goes ahead.

The union’s national secretary Graham Cooke said the fact the company was prepared to include union members in the discussion about their future was encouraging, but the

union’s preference for a New Zealand owned meat industry with a government-led reform process remained.

“We’ve had past experience with overseas ownership in this industry and meat workers are rightly wary of plant closures and any impact on workers’ pay and conditions that such significant change can bring,” the union’s national secretary Graham Cooke said.

“However, foreign investment has been beneficial in some cases – for example Japanese investment in ANZCO, so workers will pay close attention to what happens next in Silver Fern Farms.

The 22-stop roadshow will arrive in Mid Canterbury on September 29. It will be held at the Hotel Ashburton from 4-6pm.

The meeting is only open to shareholders and suppliers.

he Ashburton Museum recently received a collection of glass plate negatives taken by a professional photographer based in Rakaia.

Harry Alexander Palmer came to New Zealand from Cashel, in Tipperary, Ireland, where he had been born in 1876, son of the Reverend H. G. Palmer and his wife Elizabeth.

He worked in the Rakaia area from 1899 to about 1922, but enlisted for military service during World War One. At that stage he was married and had three children.

Work for a photographer was not plentiful at Rakaia. In the early stages he was hampered by lack of transport.

Much of the work was on farms in the area – family portraits, houses, threshing ma-

chines and the like. He had no horse of his own when he first started work and felt a bicycle would be no use because of the amount of equipment he had to carry, as well as the rough state of the roads, so he made sure his work was going to be paid for before he travelled.

He had an early break when in March 1899 two trains collided near his house.

He was just going to bed, but

quickly went to the Rakaia station where he said the sight of so many bodies and wounded were one of the most horrible things he had seen.

Some of the photos he took were published in the Auckland Weekly News.

He turned out again in April 1907 to photograph another train crash, this time a head-on collision at the north end of the Rakaia bridge.

Left, right and below left: There was no information with these photos, but the homes do show evidence of the extensive landscaping that occurred in many areas in the early 20th Century.

Below right – This home (the glass negative was damaged) initially looks like a small cottage but closer inspection reveals a much larger addition to the rear.

Among the photos the museum received were a number of houses.

While a few had brief notes attached giving some details, most did not.

Broncos and Cowboys fans, start booking your flights. Former Test enforcer Greg Dowling has gazed into his crystal ball and is seeing an all-Queensland NRL grand final. So impressed was Dowling by the sheer dominance of North Queensland’s pack in their blowout semifinal win over Cronulla, he reckons a repeat effort against Melbourne Storm will be enough. “In finals football it’s all up to your forwards,” Dowling said. “You have a look over the last six weeks, their forwards have been pretty quiet.”

Two-wheel titles on the line They might be just a team of three but Matt Begg, Will Kelly and Clark Stewart will be flying the Ashburton College flag this weekend when they compete on two wheels for national and South Island titles.

Matt and Will head to Raincliff Forest to compete in the Aoraki mountain bike championships, while Clark will be up

against some of the country’s best at Pleasant Point in the South Island motocross championships.

All three are relative newcomers to the competitive side of their chosen sports, but say they’ll be giving it their best shot on course and will keep their fingers crossed for good results.

Mountain bikers Will (year10) and Matt (year 11) are no strangers to Ashburton’s riverside mountain bike track or to the Mt Hutt trails, with Matt saying he also puts in quite a bit of time on the Port Hills tracks.

Neither has ridden the course for this weekend’s event.

Year 9 student Clark has

plenty of riding under his belt on the family farm, but like his pedal-powered friends, says he has no idea what challenges the Pleasant Point motocross track will present over the weekend.

He’ll be riding a KTM85 two-stroke bike, but is looking forward to the day when he can upgrade to a 125cc model.

Keenan calls for more desire

Mid Canterbury coach Grant Keenan will hold an early video analysis session this evening, which he expects to make awkward viewing for certain senior players following disappointing performances on Saturday.

Video sessions are usually held on Thursdays, but Keenan will sit down with his squad early to analyse the Hammers’ 50-32 win over East Coast, in which he feels some key players lacked intensity.

“I put it down to a poor performance that as a group we’re not happy with,” he said.

“We did not play in the way we have been training.

“We’ve worked on defence and tackle technique, but our one-on-one tackling was poor and we lacked desire.”

Keenan, who refused to name those is question, said he expects answers from the players that performed poorly and insisted improvements must be made ahead of Saturday’s clash with Poverty Bay in Gisborne.

“We’ll have a video session and there will be no hiding, you can’t excuse yourself, everybody’s answerable to their own performance,” he said.

“If you’re not playing well, then it’ll be awkward to be answering some difficult questions, whereas if you are play-

Mid Canterbury rugby clubs donate to Glenmark

Burgess ready to start

building in Omihi, North Canterbury, was destroyed by a suspected electrical fire.

The club has been recovering after losing donated jerseys, team photos and other club memorabilia in the blaze.

Southern, Methven and Rakaia have donated $500 each and Mt Somers gave $200,

while Collegiate plan donate a percentage of the proceeds made from auction at their fundraiser on December 4.

The district’s other clubs will be discussing donations in the near future.

Glenmark Rugby Club committee member Nick Hamilton, who played for Collegiate,

thanked the Mid Canterbury clubs for their donations.

“We’ve been blown away by the generosity of various people and it’s most appreciated that the Mid Canterbury clubs are helping us out,” he said.

Dumb mistake, says McCaw

By Patrick Mckendry All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw has called his trip on Argentine opposite Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe which earned him a yellow card a “dumb mistake”.

McCaw stuck out a leg when lying in a ruck as Lobbe tapped a quick penalty after 30 minutes, an act which led to Lobbe passing the ball forward.

Referee Wayne Barnes had little option but to send McCaw to the bin - to the delight of the large contingent of Argentina supporters among the record crowd of nearly 90,000.

Making matters worse for the defending champions, who eventually pulled away for a hard-fought 26-16 victory, was the fact that Conrad Smith joined McCaw in the bin in the 37th minute.

Asked about the crowd’s response - a loud chorus of booing and jeering - which continued after the match and drowned out his post-game interview, McCaw said: “I was sitting in the sinbin at the time so I didn’t have much of a comeback after that... [it was] a dumb mistake I made.”

He added: “I knew straight away that

it was a reflex thing and it wasn’t the right thing to do.

“It put the team under pressure which you can’t afford to do. It was one of those things that as soon as it happens you wish it hadn’t [done it].”

Smith’s yellow card - for interfering at a ruck in front of his posts - was less clear cut, but coach Steve Hansen said afterwards that both cards were fully justified, adding that they contributed to a difficult afternoon against a well organised and fired-up Pumas defence.

“It took a long time to get on top and the fact that we gave away two yellow cards which were both warranted meant we played 20 minutes with only 14 players,” he said.

“In saying that we haven’t played for five weeks so the game will do us the world of good.”

Asked about the booing of McCaw by the crowd, Hansen said: “It’s normal over here. It’s been happening for years, so we just take it with a grain of salt and take it for what it is - a mark of respect against a great player.

“You don’t get booed unless you’re any good. If you’re no good no one cares.”

Lucky escape for rusty All Blacks

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY This wasn’t so much a bullet dodged by the All Blacks, but a blue-and-white striped missile.

On a day when history was created - the World Cup’s biggest ever crowd of 89,019, the All Blacks prevented two more.

They have never before lost a World Cup pool game or a test to Argentina.

And, with both Richie McCaw and Conrad Smith in the sinbin at the end of the first half and Argentina holding a 13-9 lead, a defeat looked a very real pos-

sibility, rather than the eventual 26-16 victory.

While Smith saw yellow for a ruck infringement - and it was a close run thing - McCaw isn’t likely to be happy with his decision to trip Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe.

It brought jeers from the crowd and contributed to his team playing with 13 men for the rest of the first half.

Not ideal, as coach Steve Hansen might say.

The All Blacks had appeared in control early on with Dan Carter knocking over the penal-

ties, but then lock Guido Petti Pagadizaval scored from a ruck close to the line and the wheels started to wobble.

With Wayne Barnes on the whistle, it all felt a bit Cardiff 2007.

Nehe Milner-Skudder dropped a Sonny Bill Williams’ pass cold within metres of the tryline, and then Sam Cane did the same from an Aaron Smith break.

They were unfamiliar errors, but in Cane’s case it came after Smith eased the pressure with a very important try in the 57th minute which helped his team

regain the lead they relinquished on the half hour mark.

Once Cane scored, the wind went from the Pumas sails.

The breaks, almost non existent in the first half thanks the tigerish defence, started appearing, with Williams and Beauden Barrett creating many of them.

Prop Charlie Faumuina was also outstanding after replacing Owen Franks.

In fact, the All Blacks victory had a lot to do with those three.

They created a real impact after their arrivals, with Williams having one of his best games in
