A stoush that will see an Ashburton horse-training partnership evicted from its home of 10 years has been blown out of all proportion, an Ashburton Racing Club ex-committee member says. a long-running dispute between itself and trainers Danny Champion and Kezia Murphy was handled. The trainers’ home and training base is on land leased by the racing club from the Ashburton District Council. The training partnership in turn leases the land and buildings from the racing club for which it pays market rental. The pair also pay to use the track at the Ashburton Raceway for training.

A row erupted between Mr Champion and club president David Jones earlier this year around maintenance to prevent flooding on the property, but Mr Butterick believed that issue had been sorted out. It obviously continued to rankle and the committee decided to give the trainers two weeks to pack up and move out, he said.
