Ashburton is to be served by two full high schools following Ashburton Christian School being granted permission to extend to Year 13. The school will join the much larger Ashburton College in meeting the town’s needs for educating high school pupils after the Ministry of Education approved its application for the extension and a roll increase. The school has been granted an increase from 120 to 250 pupils as of 2020, and up to 345 pupils as of 2023. The school is waiting for clarification from the Ministry as to what will be the starting date for the first Year 11 intake. However, it has been informed it will be
no later than 2023, which means its current Year 7 pupils will be able to stay on after completing Year 10. Currently the school takes new entrants to Year 10. Principal Tim Kuipers said the school originally requested a 2021 start, which would have enabled current Year 9 pupils to stay on. “I have had a lot of enquiries and people wondering about when it might start,” Kuipers said. He said with some parents in Year 9 being strong supporters of the school, he would be letting them know as soon as possible when he had an answer from the ministry. The school had the facilities for the school extension with three new class-
rooms put on site earlier this year, and an additional two ready to come on site when needed. In addition, the school was designing a concept plan for a purpose-built facility to be constructed in future next door to the school, where it had just bought some land. Kuipers believed the addition of a second full secondary school to the town of Ashburton would bring the choice that many parents were seeking.
