McKenzie said the attraction to Mt Hutt was the “friendly, locals vibe”, where returning guests and staff were on familiar terms.

“It helps that it’s a big wide mountain with all-lift access and top to bottom terrain parks,” he added.

This could be on Christmas Eve or earlier.

“It’s all about having a bit of fun to celebrate the win,” Urquhart said.

Currently there was enough snow on the mountain for skiing from the quad chairlift after post-season snowfalls.

Huge relief project scales back

School, Lions link mutually beneficial

Over the past week Ashburton pilots have made 18 return flights to Kaikoura ferrying donated goods in and passengers out of the earthquake hit area.

The relief mission was the brainchild of pilot Terry Hewitt and Trevor Hurley who rebirthed his project Trev’s Barbecue, created in the wake of the 2011 Canterbury earthquake.

This saw donated goods and food taken to Christchurch daily and barbecues cooked for hundreds of people over many weeks.

Since the Ashburton to Kaikoura service started, $4500 worth of fuel has been consumed by aircraft and around 5500kg of donated food and goods have been transported north.

Now with the official operations and logistic systems in Kaikoura such as the Army, Navy, Red Cross, Civil Defence and Kaikoura District Council cranking up, Trev’s Barbecue had served its purpose as an early rapid re-

sponse service, Hurley said.

In the first week after Monday’s earthquake 8000 meals were served at the official relief centre, Takahunga Marae and 500 food parcels were distributed.

“Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all those that have helped donate the goods that have been extremely well received in Kaikoura, especially during the initial early period.

“Without the community’s help we could not have achieved what we did, when other larger nationwide organisations could not help due to their size or were restricted from access by land or sea,” he said.

The Ashburton group has now decided to scale back flights to one each day for special request donations.

People are still able to contribute to the appeal, however, through the charity’s Westpac account – Trev’s Barbeque Kaikoura Earthquake Relief 03 0835 0023227 000. This charitable account is administered by Croys Accounting.

Chertsey School showed off its new equipment last Friday after they seized an opportunity presented to them by the Rakaia Lions Club.

The school bought a 3-D printer, GoPros, iPads and have upgraded their laptops after the Rakaia Lions asked the school to organise the Rakaia Golf Tournament, earlier this year.

Chertsey fundraised through sausage sizzles, raffles and

sponsorship for the golf tournament which amassed just shy of $10,000.

Chertsey School principal Sean Wansbrough is pleased with the $9500 raised, and thankful to the Rakaia Lions who topped the money up to a tidy $10,000 mark.

The students spent their time last week strapping GoPros to their heads, creating classrooms in Tinkercad (a creating program designed for 3-D printers) and trying out their

new laptops. Wansbrough is delighted with the new gear and the students love using it, he said.

He said it was important for Chertsey School to finally get the tools other primary schools in Ashburton already had.

The school has $5000 remaining.

A Rakaia Lions Club member Philip Vanderweg was at the school to see the technology used by the students.

“I think it’s brilliant,” he said.

Two trampers have been found dead in the Wairarapa.

Two men, aged 32 and 39 have been found dead on a track in the Tararua Forest Park.

The men were reported missing on Sunday night about 7pm by family.

While weather conditions in the Tararuas were generally good over the weekend, temperatures did fall overnight and police are working to establish

what experience the pair had.

A police spokesperson said “early indications were hypothermia”, but that had not been confirmed.

Police will be investigating what happened on behalf of the Coroner.

At 5.30pm the company was reporting 3G/4G mobile customers to be possibly experiencing a loss of voice, data and SMS services. The outage started at 10.33am.

Two Ashburton neighbours are at loggerheads; at stake is the rights of a community organisation to run a riding school against the rights of a resident to run a dog boarding kennel and day care.

The business, The Dog House is fully consented and open for business and Mid Canterbury Riding for the Disabled (RDA) members are not happy. They’re concerned the canine guests will frighten their horses, potentially putting young, vulnerable riders at risk.

The debate is now raging on social media and yesterday The Dog House owner Kirsten Diack held an open day she hoped would answer questions and result in the two parties being able to peacefully co-exist.

The business has been several years in the making and thou-

sands of dollars in the planning, Diack said.

Before applying for a land use consent they surveyed neighbours, talked to the Ashburton District Council to find the conditions they would need to meet and commissioned a $6000 acoustics report to ensure they constructed perimeter fencing that would minimise dog noise.

“We spent six months of work on this in terms of planning and we submitted a huge volume of information – over 230 pages with our application,” she said.

RDA was one of two neighbours the council consulted with over possible noise issues but were satisfied the effects would be negligible.

Diack has a noise management plan in place and has met every condition the council put up.

She’s asked RDA to notify her when they are using the riding

ring and during that time she will relocate her dogs to another part of the property. The property is surrounded by a two metre high double fence with polystyrene baffling.

Her licence is for up to 10 dogs overnight and 20 dogs for day care.

As much as they’re not happy about the dog daycare as a neighbour, RDA chief instructor Maxine Whiting said RDA was more upset about the lack of communication from the council.

“We had to find out their consent had been granted on Facebook; council said they’d keep us informed and they haven’t,” she said.

Critical to the success of the programme has been knowing that the riding ring in Leeston Street was in a quiet environment, free from unexpected noise that could spook horses,

she said. “It’s become a situation where the thousands of volunteer hours to run our programmes, establish and fund our facilities, purchase and sponsor our horses – has not been considered above this commercial operation.”

“We feel, along with our neighbours, that we have been poorly served by our council.”

The crux of the issue was that dogs and horses ridden by vulnerable children were not a good mix, Hooper said.

RDA was also used by community groups and by the elderly, she said.

“It seems there’s nothing we can do about this but we’re not backing off. We haven’t done our best if we back off and don’t do something.”

Diack hoped the open day had gone someway towards allaying the RDA’s concerns.

Mid Canterbury will receive $383,000 from Government for wilding conifer control.

Around $16 million has been allocated nationally for a four-year programme to deal to the pest plant and Environment Canterbury is handling the region’s $3m share, which is more than twice the amount spent on wilding control last year.

Wilding pines kill off native ecosystems, impact historic and tourism landscapes, and cause wild-fire problems.

Chief executive Bill Bayfield said the allocation level illustrated the extent of the problem in the region.

“There is much to be done to protect farmland, water yield and iconic landscapes from this invasive pest,” he said. “With another dry summer in prospect, reduced water yield caused by wildings becomes an issue, as does increased risk of fire.”

The Mid Canterbury money will be spent on wilding control in the Hakatere hill country area.

Graham Sullivan, regional biosecurity leader, said around 180,260ha would be covered in Mid Canterbury. The Hakatere area was one of six priority areas, involving nearly 900,000ha.

He said more money had been needed to contain the spread of Canterbury’s worst pest plant.

Wildings are currently spreading at about 90,000ha a year, the equivalent to nine average-sized high country farms.

“The current initiative is the first phase of a programme that will hopefully lead to a sustainable long-term management plan,” Sullivan said.

“First we are looking for increased prevention and control; reducing the area currently invaded; co-ordinated, more cost effective control and prevention; information gathering, and early control action and support.

“Early action to prevent seeding is crucial if we are to get on top of the problem.”

Food safety standards high in district

Ashburton’s food businesses have been given a giant tick for their compliance with new national food safety regulations.

Over the past 18 months the Ashburton District Council has worked closely with food businesses to ensure a smooth transition to the new regulatory environment and that meant standards in the district were now uniformly high, says regulatory manager Rick Catchpowle.

Ashburton contracts its food audits out to a Christchurch based company, he said.

“They’ve been very pleased with the standard they are seeing in both shops and with the mobile stalls too.”

Well ahead of the introduction of the new Food Control Plan regulations, the council had been working with food business owners to ensure they were well informed about the new standards, Catchpowle said.

“Our approach over the past 18 months or so has been to work with the businesses on this, not against them. Any advice they are given is all about keeping their business in business.”

Food control plans set out the steps a business needs to take to ensure its food is safe. It details possible risks and how these are being managed.

Under the previous regime of inspections and food gradings there was a temptation for businesses to hide any failings, fearing they could be closed down. The new environment was much more co-operative, he said.

Ashburton’s successful safe food environment is not matched around New Zealand, however.

In Wellington, more than 20 eateries were given notice that they failed on basic cleanliness with at least two forced to close while a cleanup job was undertaken.

Ashburton was ahead of the game in meeting the new regulations, Catchpowle said.

Images released following robbery Police have released images following an armed robbery at Alford Forest Road Dairy on Sunday morning.

Ashburton Police detective sergeant Leigh Jenkins said the images are of the suspect responsible for the robbery and a pair of gloves used.

The robbery occurred at around 10.40am on Sunday and the man is believed to have been carrying a sword.

The man, described as large and with a solid build, demanded money and cigarettes.

After he was given money and cigarettes he fled north along

Clark Street in a blue station wagon.

Jenkins said police would like to speak with anyone who may have information relating to either image. The information can be given directly to Ashburton Police on 03 307 8400 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Missing markings lead to crash A lack of road markings is being blamed for a collision between two vehicles on the corner of William and Burnett streets yesterday.

Just after 1pm a car travelling north on William Street failed to give way and hit another car travelling east down Burnett Street.

Individuals involved in the crash were treated at the scene by St John Ambulance staff.

Senior Constable Herb Inwood said the crash was possibly due to a lack of give way markings on William Street however, there are still signs on the side of the road.

He said the council said work on resurfacing the section of William Street was completed on Sunday, and contractors would be repainting the markings today.

If you’re finding it tough paying your rates bill, the Ashburton District Council has a scheme that could help you balance your budget.

Its rates rebate scheme has been running for a number of years and is available to property owners with an income of less than $33,000. To be eligible you must live at the address you pay rates for and it must be your name on the council’s rating information.

With the next instalment of rates due in December, council community relations manager Vincie Billante is reminding people to check whether they are eligible for a rebate.

“Council understands that some families and individuals on a lower income struggle to pay their rates.

An eligible ratepayer for the scheme could save up to $610, and that can make a lot of difference to households,” she said.

Shooting the moon US President-elect Donald Trump is set to slash Nasa’s budget for monitoring climate change and instead set a goal of sending humans to the edge of the solar system by the end of the century, and possibly back to the moon.

Mr Trump, who has called climate change a “Chinese hoax”, is believed to want to focus the agency on far-reaching, big banner goals in deep space rather than “Earth-centric climate change spending”.

According to Bob Walker, who has advised Mr Trump on space policy, Nasa has been reduced to “a logistics agency concentrating on space station resupply and politically correct environmental monitoring”.

Mr Walker, a former congressman who chaired President George W. Bush’s Commission on the Future of the US Aerospace Industry, told The Telegraph: “We would start by having a stretch goal of exploring the entire solar system by the end of the century.

“You stretch your technology experts and create technologies that wouldn’t otherwise be needed.

“I think aspirational goals are a good thing.

This year Nasa’s Earth Science Division received $1.92 billion in funding, up nearly 30 per cent from the previous year.

Its funding has gone up 50 per cent under President Barack Obama.

At the same time Obama proposed cutting support for deep space exploration by $840 million next year.

The money for earth sciences goes to projects like the

Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System, a constellation of eight satellites intended to monitor surface wind speed on the oceans.

Speaking hours after Mr Trump’s election win Thomas Zurbuchen, Nasa’s science administrator, defended the work.

He said: “Nasa’s work on Earth science is making a difference in people’s lives all around the world every day.

Earth science helps save lives.”

But Republicans have complained the agency that sent men to the moon should not be spending billions of dollars on “predicting the weather”.

Will Trump send men back to the moon?

A man has not set foot on the moon since 1972 but there is a good chance a Trump presidency will lead to a return.

Under President George W. Bush’s Constellation programme a trip back was planned in the 2020s, but Obama cancelled it.

However, much of the Constellation equipment will be available and Mr Trump is receiving advice from several figures who are keen to launch a new lunar mission as a stepping stone to Mars.

Walker favours a moon mission. So does Newt Gingrich, a close Trump ally and space fanatic.

Gingrich had proposed putting a human colony on the moon within eight years, and even suggested when there were 13,000 people there they could apply for statehood.

There are political reasons too.

Russia has a plan to put 12 cosmonauts in a base on the lunar surface.

Second strong quake strikes in Argentina A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Argentina, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck 5.57pm local time on Sunday (yesterday 9.57am) and was felt as far away as Chile’s capital Santiago.

There is no word yet on casualties or damage.

It is the second quake to strike the region in eight days, according to the Independent.

The centre of the quake was 25 kilometres southwest of San Juan, the north western region of the country and close to Chile.

Chile’s seismological agency put the pre-

liminary magnitude of the earthquake at 6.5, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 6.4.

The USGS said there was a low likelihood of damage or casualties.

It was measured as fairly deep below ground, striking more than 115 kilometres below the Earth’s surface, which lessens the effects.

On November 13 a 6.2 magnitude quake struck northwestern Argentina around 8am local time, at a depth of about 99 kilometres, and no serious injuries were reported.- NZME

Justin Bieber was thrilled when he got his customised neon blue Ferrari 458 Italia in August last year. But alas, familiarity breeds contempt and the Canadian pop star apparently managed to lose the vehicle, after a night out on the town.

The young star apparently parked the luxury sports car at a fancy Beverly Hills hotel before heading out for a night on the town - but forgot where he left it.

It took three weeks for an assistant to finally track the supercar down to the parking garage of the upscale Montage Hotel where The Biebs had left it. The Ferrari 458 Italia starts at a pricey $240,000. But that’s just small change for the 22-year-old who’s worth $200 million.

Mt Hutt is pretty savvy in the social media world, and made a pledge this year that if it won the awards it would open the ski area on Christmas Eve if it had snow.

With the ski area broadcasting news of the award win yesterday, among the first incoming congratulatory comments from skiers was one asking about opening on Christmas Eve. The ski area was quick off the mark, responding to the request almost immediately.

“Yep we are going to be working on a plan to open either on Xmas Eve or a weekend between now and Christmas. We will let you all know on FB,” was the response.

Mt Hutt’s effective use of social media reflects the ski area’s good communication skills.

Comments posted by skiers are not always complimentary and the ski area received some criticism recently when it launched its early bird pass for 2017. The majority were supportive, but some believed the deal would make the ski area too crowded.

This was after some criticism during a busy day last year, about congestion. On this day the ski area was generally once again quick off the mark, responding to comments in the public social media forum individually, letting people know the traffic and crowd situation.

In this age of information, good communication is essential, and there is no excuse for organisations not to communicate transparently, quickly and effectively with guests and customers.

The ski area is a fantastic facility, and it would be a shame if poor communication with the odd frustrated customer let it down.

Its good communication skills are instead a tribute to the company’s managers, and no doubt helped the ski area win its latest accolade.

One-sided ‘greenwash’ ad unfair to dairy farmers Andrew Hoggard FROM THE FARM

M

y thoughts are definitely with people in North Canterbury and Marlborough as they recover from the quake damage. For many, getting back to where they were will take months, if not longer.

It’s no easy task to rebuild things, especially farms.

However, while I was watching the earthquakes coverage, for the first time I noticed an ad from Greenpeace, which effectively pinned the blame for all water pollution in New Zealand on the dairy industry. Or as they like to call it, “Industrial Dairy”.

I have made mention in the past about this absurd Industrial Dairy term, so I won’t cover old ground. What frustrates me about this television advertisement and the attitude from Greenpeace NZ is that they seem to view only dairy as the problem when it comes to our waterways.

Yes, dairy farming has an impact without a doubt. But so do other sectors of New Zealand society.

The ad shows footage of some very red looking water. I’m scratching my head trying to work out what the hell that actually is, because last time I looked cowshit is green not red. So it’s not dairy effluent. To me that looks more like tannin extract, and I wonder if perhaps we are seeing discharge from a sawmill, or something similar.

As for the shot of the dirty river mixing with the other river, that looks like the confluence of the Waipa and Waikato Rivers at Ngaruawahia.

According to locals there are accounts from early missionaries in the 1800s who stated that the Waipa was one of the dirtiest rivers they’d seen.

Sediment in waterways principally isn’t an issue created by dairy farming. Certainly the fencing off of 96 per cent of waterways on NZ dairy farms that has already been done will have reduced a large amount of what sediment there was coming from dairy.

Not all the pollution in New Zealand’s waterways comes from dairying, industry plays its part too. in the past and continues now to come from hill country erosion.

But even there, if you look at my region, which is home to the greatest amount of hill country farming in the nation, the Sustainable Land Use Initiative is having good results in reducing sediment loss from hill country farms. So both dairy and drystock are doing their bit to reduce their impacts.

Greenpeace also point the finger at irrigation as a cause of all this so-called “industrial dairy pollution”. They seem fixated on the concept irrigation is only used for dairy. On my farm I have some of the best soils you can get; I could grow a huge range of products. In fact during last year’s cauliflower shortage I was calculating how much I could have made by taking a paddock or two out of dairy.

reliable moisture. Many times I have had fodder crops fail for lack of rain. With irrigation I would have options.

The thing that annoys farmers like me the most about this Greenpeace campaign is that they give zero credit to farmers for the work they have already done, which is a hell of a lot.

Greenpeace might want it to be more. That’s fine, but at least give the industry some credit for the fact our people have made huge

strides already, and that we are serious about doing more. That 25,000km of fencing isn’t imaginary, it’s real.

Times have been very tough over the past two seasons, and with this TV ad coming on top of the candid camera vegans, my worry is that it creates a siege mentality for farmers. That nothing they do will be good enough for these people, so why bother.

That is not the attitude we want.

Secondly, I would say to anyone who feels the need to support people getting stuck into the dairy industry about water quality, give your money to Forest & Bird. They participate in forums and planning, and are actually involved. Greenpeace just seem to dress up gullible idiots in onesies to make noise on street corners, and send a truck load of money back to the corporate HQ offshore.

Or if you really want to make a difference, you might just ask a farmer if they want some help planting more trees.

Managing staff performance Mid Canterbury employers and managers could increase business productivity by having better relationships with their staff, says Business Mid Canterbury (BMC) member Mike Johnson.

The human resources specialist will lead the BMC Masterclass, Minimising Poor Staff Performance, in Ashburton on Thursday.

There were ways of managing staff which could help minimise the risk of laziness or poor attitudes affecting a business, Johnson said.

One of the most common reasons staff resigned was because they had not been managed well, he added.

“It’s getting managers to understand the way they act and talk, things they say and don’t say, can have a huge impact on how staff feel and how they perform.”

He will be introducing a range of actions managers could take.

Group member and BMC chairman Neil Pluck said the visit had resulted in SBDG members learning about the challenges faced by Mid Canterbury’s small businesses, and subsequently a report with recommendations had been drafted for Mr Foss.

“BMC have had an outstanding year,” Pluck said.

Kiwis spend close to $100 each when they shop at airport duty free shops, according to research from Cheapflights.co.nz.

In total New Zealanders spend a quarter of a billion dollars a year at duty free and are bigger spenders than Australians.

Findings from the Cheapflights #AirportLife survey showed that four in five people normally make a duty free purchase at the airport, with the national average spend coming in at $94 per visit.

North Islanders are far more inclined to make a purchase than South Islanders (84 per cent compared to 67 per cent), and will shell out approximately $20 more per visit.

This spending is in addition to the over $43 million devoted to pre-flight alcohol at airports, and on top of the money spent on preflight priorities and activities.

For example, once Kiwis are past check-in, women are most likely to prioritise getting a bite to eat and stocking up on supplies (30 per cent), while men prefer to find somewhere to simply sit back and relax (35 per cent).

Only about five per cent of travellers get in to a premium airport lounge where they can enjoy free food and drink.

Nathan Graham, regional sales manager at Cheapflights Australia-NZ, said just five per cent of people surveyed said they had ever been late for a flight, meaning the majority are arriving at the airport with time to kill.

“Shopping is a natural way to pass this time, and with more terminals being revamped across the world, retailers are set to benefit.’’

Leaky buildings Ray and Marilyn Richards say their Mt Manganui leaky home recently sold for $350,000 below market value because of problems with the plaster cladding, now the subject of an estimated $250 million class action against James Hardie. The couple made the trip to Auckland yesterday to be among several leaky home owners involved in the suit, and sat in the gallery for the start of interlocutory applications at the High Court. The action involves more than 1000 owners of 365 buildings that are taking a litigation funding-backed case against the James Hardie group of companies for failure of fibre cement cladding products. - NZME

Glass repairer happy The chief executive of Metro Performance Glass says it is too early to tell how much business it might get out of the recent earthquakes but it hopes to be called up to repair some of Wellington’s commercial buildings.

The glass-manufacturer announced a first half profit up 5 per cent yesterday on the back of the strong local construction market and a gain from its Australian acquisition. CEO Nigel Rigby said fortunately its Wellington manufacturing plant had been left unscathed in the wake of the major earthquakes last week.

Log prices on way up New Zealand export log prices rose for a third straight month in November, aided by low shipping rates and demand from China, the country’s largest export market. The average wharf gate price for New Zealand A-grade logs advanced to $117 a tonne in November, from $113 a tonne in October, and ahead of the $92 a tonne recorded in November last year, according to AgriHQ’s monthly survey of exporters, forest owners and saw millers. Forest products are New Zealand’s thirdlargest export group behind dairy and meat products.

‘Buy Now Pick Up Later’ services are also making it easier to spend up big, with fliers able to make purchases prior to departure and miss the queues.

The survey also found that while shopping keeps many Kiwis happy and almost half (47 per cent) of respondents said they are already in “holidaymode” by the time they check-in, the research showed that tensions can still flare very easily at the airport.

Here, four in 10 people identified queue jumping as the most annoying behaviour of fellow travellers, while a third (33 per cent) said they were irritated by those who are loud and hold public phone conversations.

Other top pet peeves include people waiting until they’re at the check-in counter to repack overweight luggage (28 per cent), letting small children run around or being generally unprepared (both 27 per cent).

Canterbury Television is waving goodbye to TV. Chief executive Steve McCaughan confirmed rumours CTV will now move to a digital platform – in the hope of becoming more profitable.

McCaughan wouldn’t confirm how many people will be made redundant. The regional television station broadcasts more than 20 hours of locally based programming. Sixteen staff members were killed when its building was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake.

Retail sales rising New Zealand retail sales rose in the third quarter, led by increased spending on vehicles and fuel. The volume of retail sales increased a seasonally adjusted 0.9 per cent in the three months ended September 30, slowing from a 2.2 per cent rise in the June quarter, Statistics New Zealand said yesterday. Sales volumes increased in motor vehicle and parts retailing, up 3.4 per cent, with fuel retailing increasing 2.2 per cent. Ten of the 15 industries surveyed had higher sales volumes this quarter, with the largest increase in accommodation, up 4.7 per cent.

NZ set for largest ever apple crop New Zealand is set to grow its largest ever export apple crop of 21.5 million cartons worth a record $800 million, the industry’s leader has announced.

Pipfruit New Zealand chief executive Alan Pollard said the success of New Zealand’s apple industry was breaking all records.

“We are the first of New Zealand’s larger primary sectors to meet the Government’s challenge of doubling exports by 2025, and are well ahead of our own target of becoming a billion dollar industry by 2022.

“New Zealand grows the best and safest apples in the world and we have been ranked No 1 for international competitiveness against all our global market competitors two years running.”

The 2017 season was an ‘on year’ crop, which along with the first of another million new fruit trees coming into production would produce the largest tonnage of fruit ever harvested in New Zealand, Pollard said.

“In just four years New Zealand’s apple industry went from producing 16 million cartons in 2012 to 19.5 million cartons in 2016 and an expected 21.5 million cartons

Niwa shows that in the last 15 days, regular rainfall has improved the soil moisture levels considerably. Managers are now looking for more sunshine to stimulate grass growth and replenish supplementary feed reserves.

Feed supplies look good in all areas of the province and sown winter feed crops have struck well, improving the chances of achieving a productive yield.

The latest DCANZ production figures indicate September milk flows are slightly ahead of last year, but reports out of the Waikato suggest that province could be 10 per cent down due to the big spring wet.

More positive news at the global dairytrade auction as the index lifts by 4.5 per cent and whole milk powder sells at levels not seen since 2014.

Fonterra responded to this positive market news by lifting the forecast to $6/kg ms, and reported that their revenue in the first quarter was up by 6 per cent.

Most North Canterbury farmers are now achieving milk collection after the earthquake, but those dairy farming in the Kaikoura region remain cut off.

The Government has organised an aid package for all businesses affected by this disaster, but it will be many years of hard work before things return to normal, as many rural people have offered assistance to those of need.

This week’s South Island auction saw prices again fall with only 75 per cent of the offering meeting vendors’ expectations, and the fine crossbred indicator dropped below its coarse counterpart.

With the bulk of the summer shear about to start, this lack of interest in crossbred wools by Chinese buyers is a serious concern for all those with woolly sheep.

The easing currency failed to stimulate the market, and it was only the merino offering that achieved respectable prices at this sale.

Lamb Lamb schedules are still easing as the market adjusts to a bigger percentage of product exported frozen, but only at levels unsustainable to many.

More farms are now growing specialist lamb finishing crops and these herb and clover forages have enabled heavier weights to be achieved in shorter times.

Neil and Lyn Campbell of Fairlie have won the SI Farmer of the Year title with a mixed livestock and cropping venture returning strong profits in a challenging environment. The saleyard prime lamb market is now filling with spring lambs as the numbers and prices ease for hoggets, but few store lambs have been seen yet due to plentiful feed.

Beef Some more small easing of beef schedules this week as supply starts to increase and the number of finished animals starts to build.

More downside in prime prices is expected, but with many areas of abundant feed and few other profitable livestock alternatives, procurement pressure could ensure values hold for a few weeks yet.

The velvet selling season has got off to a very slow start with early buyers quiet and some reports overseas stocks are slower to move through the market.

The whole of industry audit by Chinese regulators and the currency have been influential in this cautious start, but industry officials are confident about the sector and initiatives to stimulate consumption via the healthy food sector.

Fairlie couple win 2016

Omega lamb dishes wowed judges at the international Culinary Olympics in Germany recently.

Omega lamb billed as healthier and tastier Mid Canterbury farmers are producing lambs with naturally higher levels of omega-3 as part of a worldwide campaign to win over meat-eaters.

The Omega Lamb Project is about breeding, raising, processing and marketing New Zealand lamb as a healthier red meat.

Lambs are bred in the hill and high country then brought down to fatten on chicory and chicory/red clover pastures.

The end result is a lamb with naturally higher polyunsaturated fatty acids, intramuscular fat and omega-3.

The lamb was billed as the world’s tastiest and healthiest after wowing judges at the international Culinary Olympics in Germany recently. Mid Canterbury farmers who are part of the programme were treated to their own product in Methven this week, cooked

by Chillingworth Road restaurant chef Darren Wright, who was also a member of the New Zealand Culinary Olympics team.

The team competed against top chefs from 40 other countries and used the lamb as the centerpiece of its main dish. Judges at the contest were impressed; they awarded it a silver medal in the coveted live hot kitchen competition.

Omega Lamb Project general manager Mike Tate said the programme was about bringing healthy fat back onto the world’s menu. “We are focusing on identifying the sweet spot where fat levels give the best possible taste and mouth feel, as well as health benefits.”

The project is a collaboration between Alliance Group, Headwaters Group and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

It has developed a complete farming system that builds on a decade-long scientific programme and breakthrough research that’s found that the right combination of genetics, management and feeding can alter the fat profile of lamb and produce animals that are themselves healthier and

healthier for the consumer.

Tate said the sheep industry had been focused on selecting animals for lower fat levels over the past 20 years. “However, a level of fat is needed by ewes to survive winter and raise lambs. Fat is also needed for red meat to process well, cook well and be tender and succulent – much of the flavour is contained within the fat.”

Last season, more than 15,000 lambs reached the programme’s criteria for omega-3, intramuscular and polyunsaturated fats.

The lambs are bred in the hill and high country in spring and then are brought down in the summer to graze selected chicory and chicory-red clover pastures that help to achieve an average of 3 per cent intramuscular fat (in loin) against a 1-2 per cent average for New Zealand lamb at the same age.

The meat is currently undergoing trials in restaurants in Auckland and Hong Kong. A market launch is anticipated in 2017.

A husband-and-wife “super team” won the title of the Lincoln University Foundation’s South Island Farmer of the Year at the 2016 event.

Chief judge Nicky Hyslop said Neil and Lyn Campbell won the judges’ praise with the “efficient, incredibly flexible and adaptive” approach to the way they had developed their dryland property.

Their focus has been on systems that allow them to pursue activities that generate the most profit at the most effective point of time, with land stewardship always the foundation of their decisions.

The Campbells farm 769ha of rolling hills and flats in Middle Valley near Fairlie in South Canterbury, producing sheep, deer breeding and finishing, and a variety of crops.

“We can’t compete on the basis of volume and, likewise, we aren’t big enough to compete by going straight to the market. Therefore our best option is to deliver each product at the time when it is most profitable,” Neil Campbell said.

Hyslop said that when Neil and Lyn moved to their property their aim from the start was to be in the top 10 per cent of producers. They not only changed how the property was run, they instigated detailed analysis systems so every aspect of the farm operations could be measured and compared against key performance indicators.

“Neil and Lyn use accurate data to validate their decisions,” Hyslop said.

“There’s no reliance on hunches or assumptions. Hard data is analysed to compare and choose between the different enterprises on the farm.”

Hyslop said the farm’s small paddock sizes also allowed for specialist crops to be grown – such as oat and grass seed, and rape seed for oil – for maximum return.

South Island Farmer of the Year

Put your questions to Fonterra candidates Mid Canterbury dairy farmers will have a chance to meet and ask questions of Fonterra director candidates at a meeting at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on November 25.

The meeting is one of seven being held around the country starting on Tuesday.

The Ashburton meeting starts at 10.30am.

Stuart Nattrass joins Michael Spaans and Donna Smith as the third candidate standing for two places on the Fonterra board this year.

Spaans and Smith were nominated by the Fonterra board after being recommended by an independent selection panel; Nattrass has been confirmed as a

self-nominated candidate.

The self-nomination process allows any Fonterra shareholder, (with the support of 35 different shareholders) to put themselves forward as a director candidate.

For those unable to make the meetings, candidate information is available on the elections and annual meeting page on FarmSource. In the coming days this will also include videos of each director candidate answering a number of key governance related questions.

There will also be shareholder elections in six of the 13 wards as part of the annual voting process.

Voting packs were to be distributed from yesterday.

Voting closes December 6.

The Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Amendment Bill increases the protection of research and commercial data required to register crop protection and animal health products in New Zealand.

Increasing this protection will incentivise manufacturers of crop protection products and veterinary medicines to bring their technology and invest in solutions specifically for New Zealand.

This means farmers and grow-

ers will soon be able to access more products to farm productively. It will bring much-needed products to farmers of minor species such as deer and dairy goats.

Growers of minor crops such as citrus, sweetcorn and kumara will also benefit by accessing products already available overseas.

Manufacturers will now have the incentive to develop products specifically for these types of situations. These products undergo extensive testing and research to prove to our regulators that they are suitable for crops and animals and are sustainable.

The increase will allow 10 years’ protection for innovative products and five years for new uses, new formulations and reassessments.

facing down, press each slice firmly into muffin cups (large, 12 muffin cup size). Bake at 160°C for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine eggs, milk, Dijon mustard and cayenne pepper in a medium-sized bowl.

Set aside. Sauté bacon until almost crisp. Add spring onions and continue to cook until onions have softened. Drain fat. Divide bacon and onion mixture evenly into the 12 bread cups.

Pour some of the egg mixture into each cup, allowing mixture to be partially absorbed. Continue to add more egg mixture, filling to about 3/4 of each bread cup. Sprinkle each cup with grated cheese.

Bake at 160°C for 15-18 minutes or until golden and puffed.

The roughometer readings of 1936

936 was not only the year that Jesse Owens won his four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics, it was also the year that King Edward VII abdicated so that he could marry Wallis Simpson and that England beat the All Blacks for the first time at Twickenham (13-0).

My maternal grandfather was 53 years old and about to see the beginning of yet another world war, after surviving four years in the trenches of Belgium from 1914-18.

While these events are the background of international and personal stories, roading must have figured in all these people’s lives. We know, for example, that some considered that Ashburton’s roads were excellent in comparison with neighbouring counties of the time, yet for others, road conditions were more concerning.

An anonymous letter of complaint to the Ashburton Guardian editor, published on November 2, 1898, and modestly titled “Bad Roads”, described the extra pain received by a patient as a result of the state of an (unspecified) road when being transported by “cab” to the Ashburton Hospital.

First motorcars In 1898, two Benz vehicles were the first motorcars imported into New Zealand, brought from Paris by William McLean MP. Rules specified that this new technology was to be lit at night and was not allowed to go faster than 19km/h, so the anonymous letter writer presumably refers to a horse-drawn cab rather than to these new motorised monsters. It is likely, however, that complaints about ‘roading’ have been around ever since people unwittingly followed the first animal tracks over the edge of a cliff, or similar.

One of the many treasures held in Ashburton Museum’s archive map collection are a couple of graphs or charts showing the roughness of the road from Picton to Bluff in 1936 – something of an irony given our recent earthquakes.

Until I saw this graph, I had never heard of a roughometer.

Today’s roughometers are sophisticated technology designed for measuring various sorts of pavement, such as the surface condition of a road. This is often measured in the amount of movement of a vehicle’s axle in mm/km but in the 1930s

it was measured in inches per mile travelled.

An article published in the Evening Post of October 8, 1931, explains in detail how two newlypurchased roughometers worked.

These may well have been used to produce the graphs shown.

In essence, a vertical rod was attached to the front axle of a “standardised” vehicle, the rod of which moved up and down every time a road bump was encountered. Then the number of bumps were counted and recorded.

Road roughness is clearly related to comfort and all the as-

sociated costs of vehicle maintenance, road repairs and so forth.

Today, the “fifth wheel bump integrator”, that uses sensitive accelerometers, is the name of just one of the sophisticated devices that does this measuring. Clearly, measuring road bumps is not as simple as it was in 1898 or even 1936.

The museum’s roughometer graphs show, that in 1936, at a speed of 20mp/h in a Vauxhall Six, the Rakaia River Bridge was not for the faint-hearted – it was (disputably) the bumpiest part of the road between Picton and

Bluff. Interestingly, all the bridges were bumpy. But at least the use of the latest motor vehicle of the day would have ensured that the vehicle springs were greased before measurements were taken and that tyre pressures were standardised.

How rough is rough?

So, how rough is rough? No doubt, this will always be a subjective measure for many people.

While the needs for transporting a patient to hospital on a bumpy journey are different to those for a keen mountainbiker riding

for a thrill, I wonder whether today’s road roughness travelling at 100km/h, is the same as the bumps travelled at 20mp/h in a 1936 Vauxhall Six, or at 5km/h in an 1898 horse-drawn cab?

It also gives pause for thought that our near neighbours heading north would be glad to have any road, rather than the destruction they currently face due to earthquake. We wish them all the best for their future roading plans and hope that any roughometer will soon skim over the surface with hardly a bumpy spot of note.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the Museum.

Bennett joins 200 club

Saturday proved a day to remember for Coldstream’s Andrew Bennett as the 36-year-old took his 200th career wicket.

It was Coldstream’s first 45-over outing of the season following the washout of round two, and Bennett certainly made the most of it with a six-wicket haul in a dominant display with the ball.

Coldstream won the toss and sent the hosts into bat.

Lauriston could only muster a meagre 65 as Bennett played the role of chief destroyer and moved past the 200 wicket milestone.

Bennett and Matt Hart then got the visitors over the line after a faltering innings.

Bennett, who has played for Coldstream for 10 years and amassed 156 appearances, said the victory was the most important thing, but was pleased to surpass the 200 mark and credited Jay Houston for his fine catch.

“It’s always nice to reach a number like that,” he said.

“He tried to whip it away, but didn’t quite get enough elevation and Jay took it above his head.”

Coldstream will now turn their attention to Methven next Saturday, but Bennett is expecting stiff competition throughout the 2016 Pritchard Shield campaign.

“It’ll be consistency that gets us home or close,” he said.

“Allenton are looking good, you can’t write Tech off and you never know what you’re going to get from Lauriston or Methven, so it’s anyone’s really.”

Irish media ‘hysterical’ Steve Hansen is frustrated.

The All Blacks coach is angry at his team being portrayed as the Big Bad Wolf of international rugby following the 21-9 win over a spirited Ireland team – with the dual citings yesterday of Sam Cane and Malakai Fekitoa adding grist to the mill.

But Hansen is angry about the hysterical reaction from sections of the Irish media and rugby public.

He took offence at television sideline interviewer Clare MacNamara’s probing questions about yellow cards and a high penalty count against the All Blacks.

The same line of questioning surfaced at the post-match press conference and resulted in an equally grumpy response from Hansen.

Hansen has passionately defended his men, saying the high speed tempo of the modern game and player fallibility often contribute to unfortunate collisions.

But he then more pointedly directed the conversation towards refereeing consistency.

“All I want to say is that I would like to see some consistency in the same game,” he said afterwards.

“Because I saw the same thing happen to us but no one was penalised or yellow carded.”

Photographic evidence seems to support Hansen’s claim.

New Zealand Herald photographer Brett Phibbs snapped Brodie Retallick copping what looks like a no-arms tackle from his Irish opponent ..... and with the first point of contact looking like it is flush on the big All Black’s jaw.

That, of course, is what Cane will be facing the judiciary over,

The All Blacks didn’t just beat Ireland. They took Sir Clive Woodward’s breath away. Woodward said the 21-9 victory was a “reality check” for England who “have a long way to go before they can match the All Blacks”. In what could be the most gushing three minutes of reading about three minutes of rugby, Woodward piled the praise on thick and fast.

“Stung into action after their shock defeat in Chicago, New Zealand responded with the most intense, aggressive and ruthless passage of rugby I have ever seen. An irresistible burst of excellence and controlled fury that, currently, only they can produce.”

Peyper under pressure They say refereeing is the toughest job in sport, and Jaco Peyper knows that better than most after overseeing the All Blacks’ 21-9 victory over Ireland. The South African came in for stick from all angles for his performance, in which he dished out two yellow cards and perhaps could have issued more.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen admitted the cards were justified but said he was unsure if the penalty count, which favoured Ireland 14 to four, accurately reflected the match. On the other side of the ledger, Kiwi-born Irish coach Joe Schmidt was reportedly livid with many of the calls against his side, including two contentious tries.

- NZME Ireland’s Johnnie Sexton is very clearly attacking Beauden Barrett’s neck as he tries to prevent Barrett scoring, but referee Jaco Peyper didn’t seem to see anything wrong.

Then there is the Beauden Barrett try which infuriated the Irish players, media and fans.

The claim Barrett failed to ground the ball conveniently disregards Jonny Sexton’s tackling technique.

Pictures clearly show Sexton’s first point of contact in tackling Barrett from behind is a swinging right arm which illegally collects the All Black first five around the neck.

In fact, Sexton’s arm stays wrapped right around Barrett’s neck for the entire movement as the pair hit the ground and the Irishman tries to wrestle the ball from him with his left arm.

The high tackle means that even if Barrett did fail to ground the ball, South African referee Jaco Peyper could have awarded a penalty try for an illegal high tackle.

He could have even sent Sexton to the sin bin.

It is the northern media’s failure to highlight those incidents in the match that has got Hansen’s goat up.

Ford can be better than Barrett, says Jones Eddie Jones may have made his biggest call yet since taking over as England’s rugby coach – he says he has a playmaker who can be better than Beauden Barrett.

Jones is entitled to crow.

Since he took over as England’s national rugby coach after a disastrous World Cup last year, they have won 11 test matches straight and are even eyeing the All Blacks’ world record of 18 successive wins.

But maybe there’s something in the English tea that the former Wallaby mentor is drinking.

After reviewing a 58-15 shellacking of Fiji at Twickenham on Sunday, Jones had told English media that George Ford is the new star of international rugby.

“I think George can be better than Beauden Barrett,” said Jones, purring with admiration for the way Ford played against Fiji before then making the almost sacrilegious observation.

“People rave about Beauden Barrett but I don’t.”

Woodward impressed

Jones is in a minority there.

The judges at World Rugby’s annual awards had no hesitation in naming the mercurial All Blacks first five as the International Player of the Year last week.

And Barrett’s contribution in New Zealand’s 21-9 win in Dublin on Sunday was so immense that former All Black halfback Justin Marshall opined that Steve Hansen’s team wouldn’t have won without him.

But even though Ford is locked in a battle with Owen Farrell for the starting No. 10 jersey for England, Jones is effusive in his praise of the Bath player.

“I just think George has got a great feel for the game. He sees opportunities.

“He needs to work on his running game a bit, needs to be more of a threat himself.

“He’s actually too selfless. He needs to be a bit more selfish with the ball at times. But his alignment on some of the phase ball was absolutely outstanding,

George Ford the best I have seen for a long time.”

By Jones’ measure, that would suggest Ford is the key contender to be the first choice No. 10 for the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand next year.

Farrell, Ireland’s Johnnie Sexton and even out-of-form Welshman Dan Biggar may have something to say about that, although the ultimate say will rest with Lions coach Warren Gatland.

Sexton was a standout performer when the Lions tri-

umphed under Gatland in Australia in 2013.

Farrell, the son of former English league great and current Irish defence coach Andy, was one of the finalists up against Barrett for the Player of the Year award.

But Jones’ comments suggest Ford is winning the battle for the England No. 10 jersey.

Jones recently hired ex-Wallaby star Glen Ella to sharpen his backline.

Meanwhile, former Lions and Scotland coach Sir Ian McGeechan says Gatland will be pleased with what he is seeing from the Home Unions in their autumn internationals so far.

“Ireland will rue their luck, some of the refereeing decisions and their inability to score the tries their performance merited,” McGeechan wrote in the London Telegraph.

“Warren Gatland would have enjoyed what he saw in Dublin, that is for certain.”

Drop Smith, says Hart The All Blacks were right to pick Aaron Smith for the Dublin test, but the time has come for the star halfback to be dropped. That’s the call from former All Black coach John Hart, who has also warned that poor individual discipline could bring down Steve Hansen’s side.

Hart raved about the All Blacks’ defensive effort and Beauden Barrett’s all round game. “But I don’t think the All Blacks were as smart as they have been in previous games and the form of Aaron Smith has to be a concern.” - NZME

French another hurdle Life doesn’t get any easier for the All Blacks this week in Paris. They are sore and bruised after a hugely physical encounter with Ireland; they have lost Sam Cane and Ben Smith to injury and they have to face a French side that, as everyone knows, will defy their recent mediocre form and play with a scarcely recognisable passion and intensity. To compound matters, there is this smouldering business of the All Blacks being the bad boys of world rugby. One of either Ardie Savea or Matt Todd will start in the No 7 jersey, while Ryan Crotty is expected to return to the No 12 jersey this week.

Making the most of time off Champion jockey Lisa Allpress is taking a glass half full attitude along her lengthy road back to full fitness.

Her husband Karl and their children Josh and Angus will have her undivided attention during the recovery process following a serious leg injury that cut short her riding stint in Japan.

“It’s lovely to be able to spend much more time with them,” she said.

Allpress, who was named the Wanganui Sportswoman of the Year on Friday night, recently returned home to Wanganui to continue her rehabilitation following surgery in Japan.

“I broke the top of my tibia and the piece of bone that came off broke into quite a few pieces,” she said.

“They wired it all together so it was pretty major surgery.”

Allpress was in her second riding spell in Japan when she parted company with a twoyear-old on their way to the barrier.

“For the first month my leg was completely straight and last week the physiotherapist changed it a bit so I’m more mobile,” she said.

“I’ll have the brace on for a while yet, but it’s going pretty well really.”

The 41-year-old hasn’t an exact date yet on her return to race riding.

“They are saying four to six months so we’ll just have to wait and see,” she said.

Allpress is the current New Zealand jockeys’ premiership champion after an outstanding 2015-16 season.

Kiwis’ efforts condemned

By DaviD Skipwith Former test captain Richie Barnett has slammed the Kiwis in the wake of their humiliating defeat to Australia in the Four Nations final, voicing numerous concerns over the direction the side has taken under new coach David Kidwell.

The Kiwis 34-8 loss to the Kangaroos at Anfield capped what Barnett described as the worst performance from a New Zealand side in a Four Nations campaign while he also questioned the side’s tactics and playing style throughout Kidwell’s first campaign in charge.

“This is quite staggering, the direction that we’re heading in,” Barnett said.

“Unfortunately, this is probably, I’ve got to say, the worst performance from a Kiwis side in a Four Nations series.

“It was really disappointing because the players on paper just look so good and I got my hopes so high.

“It just looked like pretty average football all round. It was really disappointing and disheartening.”

The former Kiwis fullback and ex-test selector called for the New Zealand Rugby League to launch an urgent and wideranging review of a miserable campaign, that also saw the Kiwis draw with Scotland between two defeats to Australia, with a first-up one-point win over England the only positive result of the six-week tour.

Worrying signs were evident before the Kiwis even arrived in the UK. The lacklustre 26-6 defeat to Australia in Perth saw Kidwell criticised for giving limited game time to Dally M medal winner Jason Taumalolo and the Kiwis barely fired a shot and looked disorganised on attack playing an unfamiliar and conservative style.

“They’ll review how this looks and it’s not pretty what’s going to come out of it from the New Zealand Rugby League,” he said.

“What’s really clear is that the game plan just didn’t adjust to how we should have played.

“Key fundamental mistakes were made,

if we go back to the Jason Taumalolo episode (in Perth), when he didn’t come on until late in the second-half.”

Lessons were not heeded once the Four Nations got under way.

Barnett believes they played into Australia’s hands by deviating from the Kiwis’ traditional game plan of utilising their big forwards on the fringes of the ruck.

“Why were we playing so direct through the middle instead of spreading the ball a little bit wider to the edges?

“Which is how we used to play and we found joy that way.

“Why isn’t that guy (Taumalolo) running out on the edges at guys like (Johnathan) Thurston or (Cooper) Cronk?

“The most damaging footballer in the game and he was used far too much in the middle.”

Barnett went on to complain about the lack of adequate playmaking support for halfback Shaun Johnson and Kidwell’s decision to play back-rower Tohu Harris at five-eighth following an injury to Thomas Leuluai.

That stop-gap solution had failed in the past and did so again in the tournament decider against Australia.

However, rather than laying all the blame at Kidwell’s feet, Barnett believes that the rookie league test coach was not helped by the appointments of his inexperienced assistants, Willie Poching and Justin Morgan, and hopes he is provided with more support before next year’s World Cup. “We needed some real experience around David Kidwell and I think we just let him down considerably.

“When you look at our support staff in Poching and Morgan from the Warriors, I don’t think that would get you excited and they needed a bit more than having those two blokes.

“We just need to really start thinking about what the World Cup will look like next year because we just can’t go backwards like this.

“The brand has been damaged considerably.”

Top status confirmed Andy Murray earned the year-end No. 1 ranking and his first title at the ATP finals yesterday, beating Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 in the last match of the tennis season. The Wimbledon champion, who took over from Djokovic as the top-ranked player two weeks ago, needed to win to ensure he finished the season as the No. 1-ranked player in the world for the first time. Murray started with a pair of double-faults in the opening game, but it was soon Djokovic struggling with his serve, and the unforced errors began to pile up.

Collegiate players Devin Young and Logan Ford do battle on the Rakaia courts last year. Both clubs are considering re-affiliation to the national squash body.

Squash at the crossroads

Ten squash clubs in Mid Canterbury are being asked to return to the sport’s national fold after more than 20 years running their own successful splinter organisation.

The clubs disaffiliated from Squash New Zealand in the mid 1990s, running their own club leagues as well as interclub competitions and tournaments under the auspices of Mid Canterbury Squash.

They also devised their own grading system, similar to the national grading list.

Now they are being invited to return, with a promise of zero fees for the first two years.

Mid Canterbury Squash president Phil Lees said the clubs

broke away from the national scene because they were disillusioned with the disproportionate amount of time and money spent on elite athletes; there was little return for the “average” club player.

But he said Squash New Zealand now had a different approach to the game and was asking the clubs to return.

They would pay no national affiliation fees for two years, though they would have to pay a district affiliation fee to Midlands.

Squash New Zealand CEO Jim O’Grady visited Mid Canterbury last week to address three meetings and put his case for affiliation. Around 100 players attended presentations at Methven, Collegiate and Geraldine.

Lees said each club was now debating whether it would return to the national fold and the immediate future of Mid Canterbury Squash would be discussed at the organisation’s AGM on December 5.

He said if clubs decided to rejoin, Mid Canterbury Squash would continue to exist until at least the end of the two-year honeymoon period.

As part of the national body the clubs would be contributing to the development of all players, including those at the top level, and their combined 650 members would be able to be on the national grading list, take part in tournaments outside Mid Canterbury and attend regional and national individual and team competitions.

The clubs involved are Rakaia, Methven, Celtic, Collegiate, Hinds, Mayfield, Geraldine, Pleasant Point, Temuka and Mackenzie.

The Ashburton Squash Club belongs to both Mid Canterbury Squash and Squash New Zealand.

Lees said breaking away from the national body had been the right decisions for clubs at the time and many had saved enough money to improve their club’s facilities, but they had to think about the future and the greater good of the game that they all played and enjoyed.

The Celtic Squash Club has already voted to re-affiliate and other clubs will be making their decisions in the next few weeks.
