The Ministry for Primary Industries wants to send a man who “traded in animal suffering” to jail for 14 months.

The man and his wife ran a business selling end-of-life sheep for petfood and the couple have pleaded guilty in the Ashburton District Court to a total of eight charges of wilfully ill-treating sheep and transporting them in an unfit state to be slaughtered.

The couple have interim name sup-

pression until they are sentenced on January 29. Judge Joanna Maze was to have sentenced the couple on Monday, but she adjourned the case so they could be assessed for electronic monitoring that comes with a sentence of home detention or community detention.

Fletcher said the couple had indicated they did not want to do community work, but it was a bad case of its type and a message for the industry was needed.

Prison term for animal suffering?

The Ashburton District Council will attempt to rectify the state of the domain playground as soon as possible.

Domain playground to receive facelift Ashburton’s popular domain playground will receive a facelift in the coming weeks following a complaint laid by a concerned local mother on Monday.

Symone Hart went public with her dismay at the state and condition of both the playground at the domain and the aviary located next to it and yesterday afternoon the Ashburton District Council announced they would begin correcting the concerns as soon as possible.

Council open spaces manager, David Askin, said it was understandable that there had been a complaint.

“We are taking the concerns raised … very seriously and acknowledge that the playground is not looking as it should,” Askin said through a press release yesterday afternoon.

“There are pieces of equipment that need to be fixed to improve their safety and some general maintenance needs to happen to bring the playground back up to standard.”

Speaking to the Guardian on Monday night, Askin said that improvements to the domain playground had been a part of the long-term plan for the domain and that there was a need to be constantly monitoring, as health and safety rules and regulations changed, and altered to ensure it remained up to date.

Ms Hart’s complaint also focused in on the aviary which she felt had become overgrown, making it hard for children to see the birds.

“We’ve been landscaping the area adjacent to the aviary this year,” Askin said.

He said even people in a transitory role had to show care and responsibility for livestock.

The couple’s lawyer Bevan Coombes suggested on Monday a starting point for punishment was a fine between $20,000 and $30,000.

He said the sheep were held at the property between two and five days while transportation and killing space was available.

The operation had since moved to another farm and his clients had moved from the property.

Judge Maze said case law allowed her to adopt jail as a starting point but she remanded the couple to January 29 and asked for new reports looking at home detention, community detention and community work.

The truck driver who took the animals to the works, Tony Shayne McCall of Rangiora, was fined $1300 for permitting unfit animals to transported.

Coombes said he had been a driver for 25 years and carted 150,000 stock annually; it was the first time he had appeared on animal welfare charges.

The judge said she had read McCall’s references and he was held in high regard. “But in this case you allowed to be loaded and transported and then unloaded 105 animals, nearly 50 per cent of which had a body condition score of one. That would have been obvious to you given your length of time in the industry.”

She said the fine was to send a message to McCall and others in the industry.

“This country depends on a good health record for an industry of this kind.”

From P1 The charges arose after a truck driver took 105 ewes from the couple’s property to the Smithfield meatworks in Timaru in June last year, but nearly half were emaciated and just 2 per cent were fit enough to be transported.

Fifty-one had a body condition score that needed urgent remedial action. The ewes were inspected by a veterinarian at the plant and found to be in a “terrible body condition” and in an unsuitable state for transportation.

One sheep fell down in front of her and died and another went to the ground and had to be euthanised because of its emaciated state. She said the sheep were the worst she had ever seen.

Officials then went to the property where the ewes had been picked up and found 112 sheep in a bare holding paddock where they were being kept before being transported for slaughter. A number of the animals were in very poor condition, suffering from lameness, footrot, emaciation, arthritis and some were continuously coughing.

A local veterinarian examined them and immediately euthanised four. Nine had a body score condition that needed urgent action.

Fletcher said the defendant then put down 31 sheep rather than treat them. The business model of the operation did not allow for veterinary costs and one vet visit a week would erode the profit margin.

The operation had been described by an MPI district manager as a business trading in animal suffering, he said.

“However, we’ve had to redirect resources to other projects due to our very busy spring schedule.

We haven’t forgotten the aviary and will be getting the project back under way as soon as possible. Many families frequent the domain and we accept that the playground and aviary areas are not as they should be.

“We will be doing everything we can to ensure they continue to be something the community can enjoy and take pride in, especially as we head into the summer holidays.”

The council has replaced play equipment at a number of playgrounds around the district in recent years, including at Argyle Park, Clark Street and George Glassey Park, where additional equipment was installed this year.

Toot 4 Tucker gears up for big drive

Last year’s drive amassed a record-breaking 320 banana boxes filled with food.

Judith Lilley of the Salvation Army and Jackie Girvan of Presbyterian Support said the best items are non-perishable, unopened and before their use-by dates.

Well-received items in previous years include cereals, tea and coffee, jellies and instant pudding, canned tomatoes, tinned fish and risotto.

“But we’re so grateful for anything we get,” Lilley said.

Special Toot 4 Tucker donation bags will be sent out in the mail, but food items can also be donated inside plastic supermarket bags.

Residents who know they will not be home on Monday night can also leave their donations out the front of their house.

It’s the literal food “drive” that fills Ashburton with a cheerful chorus of car horns once a year and it’s all go next Monday night.

Toot 4 Tucker will be hitting the streets at 6pm, with an army of collectors and volunteers gathering non-perishable food items for locals in need.

If your pantry can spare a can of tomatoes or a box of cereal, then it’s easy to donate – keep an ear out for the horns, then pop outside and give it to a collector.

Led by the County Lions and sponsored by Property Brokers, the initiative is in its 17th year. It now distributes goodies to three foodbanks – the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and Presbyterian Support.

Santa parade bigger and better

Christmas cheer will descend upon Ashburton on December 1, with a new six-metre tree making its debut in an official lighting ceremony.

The Light Up The Night event in Baring Square East will be followed the next day by the town Santa parade, set to be bigger and

better than ever before.

The Ashburton District Council has ordered the Christmas tree from Auckland, and its cost is being covered as part of $150,000 approved in the annual plan for festive lighting. It is to be installed at Baring Square East.

Light Up The Night will be at 7pm, and it will include an outdoor Christmas movie and Christ-

mas carols. There will be food trucks on site, and visitors are also invited to bring along a picnic.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Mid Canterbury Santa Parade will have upwards of 50 floats, as well as dozens of vehicles such as vintage cars, traction engines and trucks joining in.

Ronald McDonald will be there, and for the first time there will be

floats from Christchurch, Rakaia and Methven.

Organiser Carol Johns said the Santa float was getting a big revamp thanks to Ashburton Menz Shed.

“I’m just really excited now that it’s all pulling together,” she said.

She was currently getting together 1000 bags of lollies which would be given out by clowns

Book promotes new theory of Polynesian origin

Mid Cantabrian Sally Kane wore her grandfather’s war medals at a ceremony in Belgium this month to mark 100 years since the Battle of Passchendaele.

Her grandfather was Westerfield farmer John Langdon, who was injured during the battle, which hastened his return from World War One. Kane also wore a medal from Langdon’s younger brother Frank Langdon, who was killed in action in 1918.

Kane, who returned recently to where she lives now in Western Australia after the ceremony on November 10, said it had been an honour to wear the medals and remember the sacrifice both her ancestors and other Anzacs had made.

The whole experience had been a very moving one. She was standing at the front near where proceedings were under way, under Menin Gate, where the Last Post has been played in memory of the occasion since 1928 whether rain, hail or snow.

There were four buglers who played in unison and a large parade was held involving a wide range of nationalities. HRH Princess Anne and her husband laid a wreath, as did the New Zealand ambassador.

Kane said she remembered her grandad as a kind man, who passed away when she was about seven.

His war medals were kept in a chocolate box wrapped in cotton wool in her dad’s wardrobe.

“We used to play with them when we were children,” she said.

Her father is Langdon’s son Russell Langdon, who today farms at Lagmhor with wife Velma. Russell and Velma, both aged 86, have fond memories of their war veteran father and father-in-law. They also recall him sharing some fleeting insights from the war.

Russell said his father told him of having to walk on duck boards in a sea of mud at Passchendaele.

Velma said he showed her the shotgun scar in his upper arm from his Passchendaele injury. He had been conscripted and told her about fellow conscripted soldiers in tears on the troop ship on the way over to the battlefields.

“They were only boys, you might say,” she said. “There were so many killed, he was just fortunate.”

A former Mid Canterbury man has published a book that puts forward a new theory as to the origin of Polynesian people.

Cedric Livingstone argues that the original Polynesian homeland is South Africa, and that the Polynesian people found their way to the Pacific via Madagascar and Egypt more than 3000 years ago.

In the book, The Origin of the Polynesians, Livingstone said a catastrophic event on the South African veldt about 3400 years ago forced the local inhabitants to move away. While some went to north Kenya, the majority – as many as 25,000 to 30,000 – made their way to the coast and then to Madagascar, before travelling up the east coast of Africa, arriving in Egypt between 1354-1337BC. From Egypt the “Afronesians” travelled east, through the Arabian Sea, past Yemen and Oman, then across to what is now Iran and Pakistan, he said.

“By the time they reached the coast of India they could be called Austronesians.”

From there the eastwards migration continued, through Indonesia, Timor, the Solomon Islands – and into the Pacific, he said.

To support his theory, Livingstone points to similarities in language and culture, linking modern-day Polynesians with South Africa and Egypt.

One of the strongest links between Egypt and Maori are similarities between the Hei Tiki and the Egyptian deity Bez, he said.

“The importance of the deity Bes, however, cannot be overestimated with regard to the Polynesian culture, as not only is Bes a 100 per cent match with the Hei Tiki in both features and meaning, Bes can be found in one form or another portrayed in either stone or wood right across the Pacific, marking the progress of the Afronesians/Austronesians as they settled in the various islands.”

Livingstone acknowledges that his theories are controversial and while he has received support from some quarters, others have disregarded them.

He spent many years researching his theories and firmly believes what he has written is true, describing the process as “like doing a giant multi-dimensional jigsaw puzzle with everything out of context”.

Footbridge’s 100th celebrated

When an iconic silhouette in the Ashburton townscape ticks off a big birthday this Friday, it may be the start of a new era for all local heritage buildings.

The Ashburton Railway Footbridge is turning 100 years old, and, to celebrate, Historic Places Mid Canterbury is adorning it with a special commemorative blue plaque.

The addition was inspired by the successful blue plaque scheme in London, which uses small, circular cobalt tiles to pay homage to the city’s greatest heritage spots.

Historic Places Mid Canterbury deputy chairman, Nigel Gilkison, said the idea of also adding blue plaques to Ashburton’s historic hotspots has been in the works for about a year and the centennial of the railway footbridge provided the perfect opportunity to start.

“Everyone’s been really enthusiastic about it,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity to raise the profile of some of these buildings and structures.”

The overhead bridge was built in 1917, and originally accompanied a large railway station. Made from jarrah timber and iron and

using bowstring truss, it was one of the longest footbridges of its time at 25.6 metres in length.

The only surviving example that exceeds this length is the Dunedin pedestrian overbridge, which spans 29.5 metres.

cast down in Dunedin and will be unveiled in a ceremony on Saturday. It will be 500mm in diameter, and describe the historical value of the bridge to passers-by.

“It’s saying it’s an important building and we are proud of it, and it’s part of our history.”

Council had been very excited to get behind the project and donate from the mayor’s discretionary fund and McIntosh Precast had kindly donated a plinth for the first blue plaque to sit in.

“Everyone’s been really enthusiastic about it,” he said.

chairwoman, Julie Luxton, said the committee was hoping the blue plaque project would not only extend throughout Ashburton, but inspire other districts to do likewise.

“We’re really hoping other groups will pick it up and run with it,” she said.

Gilkison said the group was considering possibilities such as a heritage walk around town, or perhaps in the long term, a blue plaque phone app with additional information, like what is used in London.

The unveiling of the plaque on the footbridge will take place at 10am on Friday and all members of the public are invited to attend.

The plaque will be located on the East Street side of the bridge.

Ceramics show set to wow guests

They’ve been hard at work sculpting artworks of all shapes and sizes, and now they’re ready to fling open the doors to their second-ever public show.

Hakatere Ceramics is kicking off its annual exhibition later this week at the Emmily Harmer Photography gallery on West Street.

Mick Hydes of Hakatere Ceramics said the exhibition will showcase pieces from a guest artist and from the group’s 26 active members, ranging from around $8-$400 in price.

This year’s guest artist is multiaward winning Jane McCulla, a Lyttelton-based ceramic artist who incorporates a love of landscapes and seascapes into her work.

Hydes said although members had been hard at work creating pieces for this year’s show, they were all allowed to keep one piece for themselves.

This year’s showing comes off the back of the first inaugural exhibition last year, which lured a large crowd and had successful sales.

An invite-only opening night will be held on Thursday, and the exhibition will be open daily to the public from Friday, from 9am-4pm on weekdays and 10am-4pm on weekends.

The Emmily Harmer Photography studio is located at 179 West Street.

Guests checking out the works on offer at last year’s Hakatere Ceramics Annual Exhibition. Later this week the group will be back with a fresh collection of pieces for show and for sale.

Maths test a level too hard

BY SIMON COLLINS Some top maths students have been reduced to tears by questions in a Level 1 maths exam which teachers say required Level 2 knowledge.

The Herald has been inundated with complaints from students, parents and teachers after reporting yesterday that maths teachers are organising an open letter to the NZ Qualifications Authority complaining about the three maths papers, which students sat on Monday.

One mother said her daughter was a top maths student at a top private girls’ school but now wanted to drop maths because she felt she had failed the exam.

“She is in Year 10 doing NCEA maths this year and said Year 11 girls were crying in the exam,” the mother said.

Evie Yeo, a 15-year-old Year 11 student at Middleton Grange School in Christchurch, sat a Level 2 internal maths exam as well and said it was easier than the Level 1 papers.

“All of my maths internals I have been getting excellence for them,” she said.

“But I felt really discouraged, I felt the work that I’d done this year hadn’t paid off.”

She said students who sat the Level 1 exam were confused.

“As soon as we got out we were just bursting out complaining, it was so hard.”

The exam comprised three papers which students were expected to do in one hour each during the three-hour exam, but Evie said there were far too many questions.

“You have to be doing an average of completing one page in five minutes, and there’s no way this can be achievable,” she said. “We need time to figure out what to do but it felt like the whole time I was rushing.”

A student who said he was “an all excellence student with a 100 per cent grade point average for all subjects” described the exam as “incomprehensible in parts”.

“In some cases calculations were impossible given the lack of information. In others, there were questions not covered in the syllabus,” he wrote.

A Year 11 student at Carmel College in Auckland wrote that none of the work that she had prepared for was in the exam.

“I just wanted to walk out because I had never felt so unprepared for an exam.”

Another Auckland Year 11 student, Lydia Finch, said she had not been taught what was in the graphs paper.

“Most people I have spoken to said they found it really hard and left many questions blank and others handed in an empty booklet.”

Another 15-year-old said the exam was “basically impossible”.

“The amount of stress these exams put on people around me including myself isn’t what young teenagers should be going through at this point in their lives,” she wrote.

Maths teacher Jake Wills, who is collecting comments from other maths teachers in an open letter to NZQA, said some of the questions were at Level 2 level, not Level 1.

“It’s not super-major. It’s not like the issues we had last year where one of the questions was impossible, but for a national exam you would expect better,” he said.

The letter has been signed so far by 22 maths teachers, most of whom Wills said were heads of maths departments. Four others have said they will sign it once a final version is agreed.

Wills has asked teachers for comments

by November 27 and said he would then finalise a letter to go to NZQA on December 1.

“The idea behind this is not to bash NZQA,” he said. “We want good exams.”

However, NZQA deputy chief executive Kristine Kilkelly said the authority was still “confident in the quality of the Level 1 Mathematics examination”.

“All NCEA assessments are aligned to the standard and the NZ Curriculum,” she said.

“The Level 1 Mathematics examination was set by a team of experienced mathematics teachers, for the right curriculum level and is consistent with the specifications for the standard.

“Students may find some questions in examinations more difficult than others, especially those parts of the question aimed at excellence.

“Parts of the examination will be challenging, but students often do better than they expect.”

Young Kiwi dies in UK accident A “young, happy and beautiful” New Zealander who died in a tragic accident in the UK has donated her organs to help save other lives.

Kiwi Toni Kelly was living in London when she was severely injured in an accident. She was put on life support for a week before dying of her injuries.

Toni’s mother, father and sister, from Whangarei, have flown to London.

Hundreds of people have donated to a Givealittle page set up to help bring Toni home, raising more than $24,000 in two days.

Friends described Toni as a young woman with an infectious personality who lived life to the full and touched everyone she met.

One described her as “the most genuine, down-to-earth, free soul, crack-up chick I have ever met! Always had the biggest heart for anyone and everyone and sure knew how to show a good time. Al-

ways had the best life advice and to never take it for granted!”

Sports co-ordinator at Dargaville High School Christine Taylor said Toni – who attended the school from Year 11 or 12 – would be “sorely missed”.

“She was a very outgoing, easy to get along with and happy-go-lucky girl,” Taylor said.

hat a breath of fresh air it was to see the Ashburton District Council on the front foot yesterday.

A big plaudit to their open spaces manager David Askin who, when approached with the concerns of a local parent around the condition of the Ashburton Domain playground, sounded absolutely mortified to hear of its state.

It could have been easy for the council to bury their heads in the sand and wait for the heat to simmer down before coming out with solutions, but Askin seemed very keen to have things corrected and was more than open to talking sensibly about the options available.

Not something I’ve seen a lot lately – so bravo.

Yes, the domain playground has become a disgrace and it’s been depressing to see the improvements being made to other play areas around the district which have received exciting, fresh new features while the old domain playground is getting by with its tried, trusty and true.

Hopefully the complaint, which we detailed in yesterday’s edition of the Guardian, might be the first step to bringing the playground back up to a level where it could be a central stopoff point for many tourists.

We need to create a good impression and unfortunately, for this situation anyway, one of the main reasons for people stopping as they drive through our town, is to stretch their legs and let the kids have a run around – which often leads them to a playground.

If our playground is a mess and falling apart at the seams, that is the impression they will take away with them about the rest of the town – so, as insignificant as they might seem to some, a playground is a key marketing tool.

Symone Hart also needs to be commended for having the decisiveness to go public with her concerns about the state of the playground and the bird aviary adjacent to it.

To put yourself out there in the public arena with such a strong opinion takes a bit of courage.

Symone has handled the entire process very well and we would do well to have more people like her who are willing to speak out about issues that concern them.

Better work stories

P

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern might want to adopt the police slogan “better work stories” for her own international ramblings after the latest tittle tattle to come out of her trip to the East Asia Summit and Apec.

The work story she came back with has created a wee diplomatic incident in the waiting – a self-inflicted one related to US President Donald Trump.

Ardern is clearly as fond of an entertaining anecdote as the next person, and told a couple of people about an incident in which Trump had appeared to mistake her for Trudeau’s wife before being introduced to her.

This was mentioned by one of those people – comedian Tom Sainsbury – when he was on Radio Live on Sunday.

Ardern had told him of this backstage anecdote from a leaders’ summit when she and Sainsbury were backstage at the NZ Music Awards.

Ardern clarified Trump had not said anything to her face but someone else told her they

suspected Trump had come to that conclusion before Ardern was introduced to him.

Ardern has declined to say who overheard the comment she missed, or indeed whether it was another world leader.

But she then said it happened while she was standing in a circle with other world leaders in a holding area waiting to be called onto the stage and she had missed the remark.

There is a photo of Ardern standing in one such circle on her first meeting with Trump.

The other two leaders in that circle are Trudeau and Mexico’s President, Enrique Pena Nieto.

The process of deduction would suggest it was Trudeau who was the recipient of a comment from Trump on the matter, and duly tittered over it with Ardern afterward.

Creating a diplomatic incident and quelling it are two different things.

Ardern got stuck in a spiral of explaining and forensic questioning about who had told her and what they said.

She was stuck between the rock and hard place – she could

not dob in another world leader for narking on Trump, or ridicule Trump or admit they had been giggling away about whatever it was Trump did say.

She fudged it, saying it was not enough to cause a diplomatic incident over.

That is quite true.

She moved to muddy the waters, saying some reports were not correct but refusing to state which reports were not correct.

Ardern had told Sainsbury backstage during the NZ Music Awards because he was a friend of hers.

She had told a longer version of the tale to at least one other person.

Ardern has since said she possibly should have just stayed quiet about it.

Too right.

Ardern has learned the difference between gossiping as Prime Minister – especially when it involves a controversial figure such as Trump – and gossiping as a backbench MP, or even simply a friend.

People like to talk about what the Prime Minister told them.

It makes for great dinner table

conversation.

Her ministers back home were being rapped on the knuckles for over-sharing and she too had fallen into the trap.

Given Ardern had already told media her pointed retort to Trump’s suggestion her election had upset people back in New Zealand (“People didn’t march when I was elected”), it is a bit late to take a vow of silence now.

Ardern is no fan of Trump – she was one of those who marched against him in the Womens’ Rally on the day of his inauguration.

If the reports are correct, he clearly thinks a bit more of her than she of him – it has been reported Trump reportedly said to Trudeau “you’ve done well for yourself”.

Submarine hopes dashed Sounds detected by probes deep in the South Atlantic on Monday did not come from an Argentine submarine that has been lost for five days, the country’s navy said, dashing newfound hope among relatives of the 44 sailors aboard.

Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told reporters that the “noise” was analysed and experts determined it was likely “biological”. He said the sounds did not come from tools being banged against the hull of a submarine as was previously reported.

“We all had hope, but unfortunately this comes from believing sources that are not trustworthy,” Balbi said.

The noise was heard by two Argentine navy ships about 360 kilometres from the Argentine coast and at a depth of about 200 metres.

A US Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft was sent to help in the effort to isolate the source of the sounds.

The ARA San Juan went missing Wednesday as it sailed from the extreme southern port of Ushuaia to the coastal city of Mar del Plata.

The US Navy ordered its Undersea Rescue Command to deploy to Argentina to support the search for the submarine.

Pledges of help also came from Chile, Uruguay, Peru,

Brazil and Britain.

The submarine was originally scheduled to arrive Monday at the navy’s base in Mar del Plata, which is about 400 kilometres southeast of Buenos Aires.

Explosions rock New York factory

Fourth term in doubt as talks fail

Two explosions and a fire at a cosmetics factory north of New York City have left 20 people injured, including five firefighters caught in the second blast.

New Windsor police say the first explosion occurred around 10.15am on Monday at the Verla International cosmetics factory.

Police say firefighters were inside when the second explosion occurred.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s efforts to form a three-way coalition government that would secure herself a fourth term have hit a major setback after a would-be coalition partner unexpectedly pulled out of talks.

Merkel said shortly after the pro-business Free Democrats withdrew from the negotiations that she would inform the German president that she could not form a coalition.

The development leaves Germany with two unprecedented options in the postWWII era: Merkel forms a minority government with the Greens, or the president calls a new election after parties fail to form a government.

The centre-left Social Democrats, Merkel’s current coalition partners, have ruled out a repeat of a coalition with her conservatives.

Della Reese dies

Della Reese, the actress and gospelinfluenced singer who in middle age found her greatest fame as Tess, the wise angel in the long-running television drama Touched by an Angel, has died at age 86. Reese’s co-star on the series, Roma Downey, said in a statement that the actress died peacefully in her home in the Los Angeles area. No further details were included. Before Touched by an Angel debuted in 1994, Reese was mainly known as a singer, although she had co-starred on Chico and the Man, Charlie and Company and The Royal Family and hosted her own talk show, Della. Touched by an Angel was a gamble for CBS but the show’s audience continually grew.

Flooring giant buys Godfrey Hirst

Kathmandu first quarter earnings up Kathmandu Holdings, the outdoor equipment retailer set to hold its annual meeting on Friday, says its first-quarter earnings were up despite sales dipping as it widened margins by selling less sale stock.

In the 16 weeks to November 19, group sales rose 0.6 per cent at constant exchange rates but dropped 1.6 per cent on a same-store basis, the Christchurch-based company said.

In Australia, its largest market, same-store sales grew 2.9 per cent in the quarter while they dropped

10 per cent in New Zealand. Gross margin expanded 240 basis points, or 2.4 percentage points, with the level of clearance stock about 40 per cent lower than a year earlier, it said.

Its share fell after the statement and last traded down 4.6 per cent at $2.48, but are up 33 per cent this year.

“During the first quarter we sold more current season product than last year, but less clearance stock,” chief executive Xavier Simonet said.

In the last financial year, Kath-

mandu Holdings posted first-half profit of $10 million, up 6.4 per cent and just beating earnings guidance.

More recently, the company announced it had lifted annual profit 14 per cent to $38 million as sales grew in New Zealand and Australia, while it cut its debt levels to record lows.

It has continued the recovery from an earnings slump in 2015 when an inventory build-up forced it into aggressive discounting at low margins to clear stock.

Chairman Geoff Ricketts also discussed some of Heartland’s community engagement at the meeting, outlining the activities of the Heartland Trust, which made $280,000 of charitable grants and donations to almost 20 organisations in the financial year.

That was after Ricketts pointed to Heartland’s total shareholder return of 60.9 per cent in 2017, and an annual average 38.3 per cent return over the past five years.

Heartland wants to raise $59 million from shareholders via a discounted rights issue which opens later this week.

Heartland Bank is sticking to existing forecasts for annual profit to rise as much as 13 per cent as credit growth and improving asset quality bolster the lender’s books, but is watchful of increasingly volatile global financial markets.

Chief executive Jeff Greenslade, who’s led the lender since Marac Finance was carved out of Pyne Gould Corp in 2011 and merged with the Canterbury and Southern Cross building societies, told shareholders at yesterday’s annual meeting in Auckland that the bank is still confident net profit will be between $65 million and $68 million in the year ending June 30, 2018.

Global flooring manufacturer Mohawk Industries has agreed to buy Australasian carpetmaker Godfrey Hirst, known domestically for acquiring failed rival Feltex more than a decade ago.

No price was disclosed in the transaction, which is expected to be completed in the first half of next year, although the Australian Financial Review reported the deal was said to be worth $A500 million.

Godfrey Hirst’s New Zealand division more than doubled net profit to $11 million in the year ended June 30, 2016 on a 13 per cent increase in revenue to $174.6 million with about 41 per cent of sales to related parties, according to accounts filed with the Companies Office.

The Australasian carpet maker’s sales were about $US334 million in the year ended June 30, 2017, Mohawk said.

Pie, the ultimate comfort food T

■ Combine well using your hands.

■ Place mixture into pie tin, spreading evenly and smoothing the top.

■ Place pastry over the top.

■ Dampen and press the edges together.

■ Brush top with the egg.

■ Bake for 50 minutes until the pastry is golden and the pie cooked.

■ Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving.

here’s nothing nicer than a pie, but eating a pie needn’t mean eating a healthy dose of pastry.

Pies can be open top with pastry on the bottom only, they can be a pastry top and bottom affair or they can be a pastryless pie, perhaps with mashed potato or kumera on top.

The one thing all pies have in common is a succulent, super tasty filling.

Vege pie

Thai fish pie 800g agria potatoes, peeled and cut into big cubes 20g butter 60ml milk 1 lime, zested 1/2 t white pepper 1t salt Pie: 2T oil 1/2 onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, sliced 1 can coconut milk, 425ml 1/2 stalk lemongrass, white part 200g salmon, cut into cubes 200g firm fish, cut into cubes 20g fresh coriander, chopped 1/2 red chilli, chopped 1t cornflour, mixed with 2t water 1T fish sauce ■ Heat oven to 220°C. ■ Boil potatoes, drain, add butter, milk, lime zest, white pepper and salt.

■ Mash and mix until smooth. Set aside.

■ Place the oil in a medium-sized pot over medium-high heat.

■ Add onion and garlic and saute´ for 1-2 minutes.

■ Add coconut milk, lemongrass and bring to boil.

■ Reduce heat to medium-high and infuse for 4 minutes.

■ Add the seafood, coriander, chilli and cornflour/watermix and

cook for 1-2 minutes.

■ Season with fish sauce and remove from heat.

■ Remove lemongrass and scoop out all the seafood into an ovenproof dish.

■ Pour over enough sauce to cover the seafood, reserving the rest of the sauce for later use.

■ Cover with mashed potato ■ Cook in the oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Sausage pie 400g puff pastry 2T oil 1 onion, chopped finely 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 celery stalks, sliced thinly 1/2 t chopped fresh sage 500g sausage meat

25g butter 1 1/2 C milk 2T flour 2T oil 3/4 C tasty cheese 1/2 pumpkin 3 leeks 1C white wine 250g button mushrooms 300g baby potatoes 1C peas 1T wholegrain mustard Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 egg 350g puff pastry

1T worcestershire sauce 2t salt 1/2 C chutney 2T chopped parsley 1 egg, lightly beaten for glazing

■ Heat oven to 220°C. ■ Melt butter, stir in flour.

■ Gradually add milk and heat, stirring until thick. Add cheese, season and set aside.

■ Heat oil in pan, add pumpkin and fry until golden. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.

■ Add leeks (cut into chunks) and mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes.

■ Add wine and boil off most of the liquid.

■ Stir in potatoes, baby peas, cheese sauce and mustard.

■ Season and heat through, then pour into an ovenproof dish.

■ Stick strips of pastry around edge of dish and put other sheet of pastry on top.

■ Preheat an oven to 180°C. Grease and flour a 20cm x 20cm square tin.

■ Roll three quarters of the pastry on a lightly-floured bench to fit base and sides of your tin.

■ Roll remainder to fit over top of pie tin.

■ Heat oil in a frying pan and add onion, garlic and celery, cooking for 4 or 5 minutes until the celery is soft.

■ Place onion mix in a large bowl.

■ Add herbs, sausage meat, worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, chutney and parsley.

■ Trim and crimp edges. Brush with egg and bake for 25 minutes until golden.

Creamy chicken pie 2T olive oil 400g boneless, skinless chicken, cubed 1 onion, diced 1 1/2 C cubed pumpkin 2C button mushrooms, quartered 2T plain flour 1/2 C chicken stock 1/2 C frozen peas 3T fresh herbs, chopped, or 1t dried herbs 1/3 C cream 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 sheets flaky puff pastry, defrosted ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Heat the oil in a frying pan and sauté the onion for a few minutes.

■ Add the chicken and cook until browned.

■ Add the pumpkin and mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes then sprinkle over the flour and stir through.

■ Cook for a further 2 minutes then stir in the stock.

■ Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring for 5 more minutes.

■ Add the peas, herbs and cream, season with salt and pepper.

■ Pile the chicken filling into a pie dish.

■ Brush one sheet of pastry with a little water and cover with the other sheet.

■ Roll out a little pastry to fit the size of your pie dish.

■ Cover the filling with pastry and trim the edges.

■ Cut a small hole in the centre of the pie and then brush the top with the beaten egg.

■ Bake for 20 minutes until the pastry is golden.

hands to combine, and divide into 4 even portions. Use slightly damp hands to shape each portion into a patty about 10cm in diameter and 2cm thick.

■ Mix mayonnaise, garlic, mustard and lemon juice in a small bowl.

Set aside.

■ Cook bacon in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes each side or until crisp. Drain on a paper towel.

■ Heat oil in the pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken pat-

ties and cook for 5 minutes each side or until cooked through.

■ Meanwhile, preheat grill on high.

Place the bread rolls, cut-side up, on an oven tray and toast for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.

■ To serve, spread the bottom of the rolls with mayonnaise mixture and top with lettuce, chicken patty, avocado, bacon and pepper. Cover with the tops and serve immediately.

In brief Chairman apologises New Zealand Rugby League chairman Reon Edwards has apologised to Kiwi fans after senior players turned on supporters following the World Cup disaster. Edwards issued an apology although he said coach David Kidwell, captain Adam Blair and senior playmaker Shaun Johnson would not be reprimanded. Edwards blamed the heat of the battle for the trio’s bizarre attack on fans and the media following disastrous losses to Tonga and Fiji.

Naiqama as captain Former Wests Tigers captain Aaron Woods believes Kevin Naiqama can succeed him as captain of the merger club next NRL season.

The former team-mates will clash when the Kangaroos meet Fiji in the World Cup semi-final on Friday and Woods is wary of Naiqama’s leadership ability. “He doesn’t look to be a real vocal person but what surprised me was the amount of time he puts into his body and his football,” Woods said. Methven tourney a winner

The Methven Golf Club have once again successfully held their annual two-day sponsored tournament over the weekend.

Club co-ordinator Barry Wackwitz said this year’s edition of the tournament went very well, with 184 participants coming from 32 different clubs to attend.

“We had a group of 12 come

over from the West Coast to play and plenty from all around Canterbury,” he said. “The tournament has been going for about 40 years and is always very well supported by the community.”

Father and son duo Mark and Mason Gazzard took out the men’s section, while Pleasant Point pair Michelle Bower and Sharyn Kake took out the women’s section.

Caddie change to make Day freer on course Jason Day believes the tough decision to replace his great mentor Col Swatton as his caddie may free him up more on the course.

He also says his combination with friend Luke Reardon, who

will be on the bag at this week’s Australian Open, has worked well in their few events since and they’ll likely continue next year.

Day dropped a bombshell

when he took the caddie duties off highly-rated bagman Swatton in September, ending a careerlong combo that yielded 10 titles, including the 2015 PGA Championship, and the world No.1 rank-

Ashes: Mate against mate

BY ROB FORSAITH David Warner has already set the tone for another fierce Ashes series, but a handful of friendships mean key figures from both camps may cross some battle lines this summer.

Cricket’s oldest and most monumental rivalry has often bubbled with bad blood.

Michael Clarke’s infamous “broken f***ing arm” sledge was a clear signal of intent four years ago, while Warner used the words hatred and war last month and suggested the hosts adopt a similarly combative approach.

There will be banter and barbs, tests will inevitably become tense. There will also be clear bonds between Australia and England, a sense of familiarity among some frenemies.

The county circuit continues to break down international borders.

Peter Handscomb is a stronger supporter of Yorkshire teammate Gary Ballance than many members of England’s camp.

Dawid Malan has already caught up with Adam Voges, the

Middlesex captain who helped put him on track to play international cricket.

Similar partnerships have been shared in the past but it’s hard to imagine an Ashes series when there has been so many coaches and players from both sides with strong links to the opposition.

The Indian Premier League has provided another outlet for unlikely allies; Steve Smith provided batting tips to Ben Stokes during their time together at Pune earlier this year.

England coach Trevor Bayliss knew about Smith’s potential before most Australians, having promoted him to first drop at NSW and asked him to lead the Sydney Sixers at age 22.

David Saker will be the hosts’ bowling coach but regards James Anderson and Stuart Broad as lifelong friends, a by-product of their time working together for England.

Saker caught up with Anderson, Broad and Alastair Cook earlier this month, when they were all in Adelaide for a tour game.

“It was good. We just had a few beers and talked about what

batsman is set to be overlooked for this week’s opening clash.

He is a much-maligned figure among English pundits and fans, attracting the sort of scorn that Shaun Marsh does in Australia.

“He started off the county season going hundred, hundred, double-hundred,” Handscomb said, recalling the captain’s knocks from Ballance that led to his most recent test call-up.

“I couldn’t believe how quickly the media – and it seems like the English selectors – get off him.

“He comes in for a couple of tests, might fail, then all of a sudden he’s gone again. You need to give him a chance because he’s a good batter.

“We’ve kept in touch. We’ll obviously catch up for a coffee at some point. He’s a good lad, I’m looking forward to seeing him.”

Handscomb will of course be putting his friendship with Ballance on hold should the two clash during the five-Test series.

“It’s not really awkward ... you might have some mates playing for the opposition but when you’re on the field there are no mates,” he said.

Lyon on front foot Australia’s cricketers want to end the test careers of some Englishmen while winning the Ashes, spinner Nathan Lyon says.

Lyon has fanned the flames ahead of the first test in Brisbane from tomorrow, saying some Poms remain scarred from their last Ashes series in Australia. “Could we end some careers? I hope so,” Lyon has told English journalists.

“There’s a lot of scars for the English guys, especially coming over here, especially when we have two guys bowling 150kmh and not just one now.”

And pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood believes Australia’s formidable Gabba record will be playing on England’s minds ahead of this week’s Ashes opener. Australia have not lost a test at the Brisbane venue since 1988, going 28 matches unbeaten with just seven draws. Hazlewood claimed Australia’s remarkable 29-year run would provide a psychological advantage in their quest to win back the urn. “They haven’t had much success here in recent times so it’s obviously good to have it in the back of their minds,” Hazlewood said.

Eight years at the top

By Cameron mCmillan The All Blacks have been at the top of the world rugby rankings for eight straight years.

The world champions moved to 93.99 rankings points following Sunday’s narrow 22-17 win over the Scotland at Murrayfield.

England, with 90.87, remain second in the rankings and put further distance on third placed Australia after a convincing win against the Wallabies at Twickenham.

The All Blacks were as high as 95.52 ranking points following their 25-24 win over the Springboks in Cape Town last month, but dropped back down after losing to the Wallabies in Brisbane.

The All Blacks moved to number one on November 16, 2009, taking the spot from the Springboks after South Africa beat New Zealand three straight times earlier that season.

All Blacks fullback Ben Smith made his debut against Italy two days after New Zealand re-gained the No1 spot, meaning the side have held the top ranking during all of his 64 test appearances.

Over the eight year reign the All Blacks have claimed two World Cup

titles and played 109 tests, losing just nine with three draws.

During that run the All Blacks have a staggering points differential of +2111 and average 4.4 tries a game.

The rugby ranking system was brought in by World Rugby just before the 2003 World Cup. Since then the All Blacks have held the top spot for more than 12 years.

It didn’t start as it meant to go on because England were the first No 1-ranked team and Australia also started above New Zealand.

Since then, it has been an All Black landslide apart from three brief spells when they were at No 2.

Bounce here to stay The AFL Commission have voted to retain the traditional centre bounce despite umpires wanting it to be scrapped. Wales coach Gatland says Saturday’s test at Cardiff carries the same danger as it always does against his countrymen, with New Zealand boasting a myriad of game-breakers who can instantly change the momentum of a match.

Barbarians coach Robbie Deans and French equivalent Guy Noves both touched on the apparent vulnerability of Steve Hansen’s team on the current

edges of some unstable performances.

Scottish coach Gregor Townsend joined in after his team’s fighting 22-17 loss at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Townsend said his team’s defensive pressure hustled the All Blacks off their game, forcing them to kick more than they planned to.

Stablemate Savvy Coup struck twice during the Riccarton carnival with a pair of runaway wins prompting Pitman to ponder the decision to withdraw her from the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m).

“Whether I made a mistake or not in pulling her out of the Guineas I don’t know,” he said.

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing and maybe we should have progressed to the Guineas, but she hadn’t been going all that flash in the three-year-old races and wasn’t doing things quite right.

“We decided to go to the maiden race to get a bit of confidence

Hasahalo aims high Stephen McKee is eyeing the Karaka Million 3YO Classic with his Riccarton heroine Hasahalo. The Ardmore trainer celebrated Group One success with the Savabeel filly last Saturday when she came from the back of the field to win the NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m). “I was confident she was going well enough and she got a good track to show what she can do,” McKee said.

“She’ll have a race somewhere over Christmas and then work toward the Karaka Mile.”

“She’s possibly going to Trentham as well for a three-year-old race over 1400m and then we’ll make a decision whether we go to Manawatu or go to Auckland.”

The options are the Gr.3 Lawn Master Eulogy Stakes (1550m) at Awapuni on December 16 or the Gr.2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic (1600m) on Boxing Day. “A run at Ellerslie would tell us if we went back for the Karaka Million or if we concentrate on the Levin Classic at Trentham in January,” Pitman said.

A Wellington trip in the New Year is also on the cards for Mr Typhon, who produced a strong performance to win on the final day of the meeting.

He will be nominated for the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m).

Vincent ready to trek north

Tim Williams is yet to have the pleasure of sitting behind the brilliant Vincent on race day, but he certainly liked what he felt in his catch-steer of the New Zealand Derby winner at yesterday’s Ashburton trials.

In his first public appearance for the new season, the Australian-bred pacer wasn’t pushed to the line by Williams, but found it on his own accord and with some purpose to finish second after settling last in the five-horse heat.

With Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen both overseas with their Inter Dominion team in Perth, Williams was handed the duties.

“We didn’t want a hard one first up, it’s just step by step at the moment,” Williams said. “But he felt great and was a pleasure to drive.

“He will improve a tonne with that run too.”

Another return workout or trial performance is likely for next week for the son of Art Major before he heads to the North Island to contest the open class riches on offer up there over the Christmas and New Year period.

“I would say he will need one

more run, but Natalie will be back next week so it’s her decision.”

Williams also got the chance earlier in the day to have a steer on outstanding mare Partyon.

The former Jewels winner, like Vincent, wasn’t pushed to the line and finished second also, but looking big and strong in condition she will improve.

“I was rapt with the way she felt too, and she found the line comfortably. They will look to really step things up next week again and get a good run under their belt.”

After an indifferent season last campaign, Partyon will be keen to get things back on track in her four-year-old year – a task made slightly easier by the retirement of Spanish Armada who had her measure as a three-year-old.

In the same heat as Vincent, another familiar face returned to the track.

Former Southland Oaks winning filly, Nek Time appeared on a track for the first time in 16 months after her career was feared to be over following the discovery of a hole in her hind suspensory.

She was tried as a broodmare, but brought back into work and has had a very slow and deliberate build-up.

Vincent was all tongue in cheek after his trial at the Ashburton Raceway yesterday.

The Terry and Glenys Chmieltrained mare went to the line beside Vincent under a hold and Glenys Chmiel, who handled the driving, was over the moon.

“She felt great and found the

line strong. Touch wood that’s the perfect start for us,” she said.

“She will probably have about four workouts or trials before we think about racing. We never thought we would get back to this

point, so we aren’t rushing her.”

A winner of eight races and close to $160,000 in stakes, Nek Time’s return would be a welcome one to the mares’ ranks for their features in the New Year.

Bright start in EPL Promoted Brighton & Hove Albion’s promising Premier League campaign has continued as they twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at home against Stoke City. The visitors went ahead through Eric Choupo-Moting but Pascal Gross equalised, only for Kurt Zouma to head Stoke back in front. Jose Izquierdo then levelled for Brighton on the hour to earn a deserved point. Culture shock on court

Ashburton’s Neil McCann has returned home with his eyes opened after attending the Senior Tennis World Championships in Florida earlier this month.

McCann represented the New Zealand team and also competed in the singles competition.

“It was a really eye-opening experience, just getting to see the level that some of the countries are at, especially the European ones,” he said.

McCann competed with the New Zealand team for the first part of the tournament, where they were drawn in a challenging group with Italy and Denmark.

“In the first match I played against the world number one for the age grade so that was a bit of a shock to start with,” he said.

“It was a very tough group that we had and we were eventually knocked into the 17 to 25 bracket, in which we won all our games and finished 17th, so the New Zealand team did really well.”

McCann then moved in to the individual tournament, where he progressed to the second round after beating American Harris Lydon 6-3, 6-1.

The luck of the draw was not on his side for the second round however, when he was drawn against third seed and world number nine Claudio Rojas Trivinos of Chile.

“I pushed him in the first set but he won it in the second,” McCann said. “It was really great to be able to play against the top of the top and see some ex-pros still competing.

“To even get the chance to play the world number one and get a good win against the number two player from Estonia was special and I couldn’t be happier.”

McCann said that while many of the European players they were competing against were regularly competing in ITF events, there is only one a year in New Zealand.

“It is a big step up but once we got in to it after a couple of days we were competitive,” he said.

While McCann thought this was going to be a once in a lifetime event, he admitted he has gotten a taste for that level of competition.

“Now that I have got a bit of a taste for it I could very easily see myself entering more tournaments, but then on the other

side, it is a lot of travel, leave from work and effort, but I wouldn’t mind going to play some in Australia and then working others into holidays,” he said.

“It was very interesting to see what is on offer for the 50s age group,” he said.

“It is all very professionally run and is a great chance to meet people and I now have their contacts so if I am ever overseas I will be able to go and visit them.”

McCann entered the tournament ranked 166th in the world and has jumped 44 places in the rankings to sit in 122nd place.

“It does give me a little bit of hope that if I was to try and really give it a go I would be able to get my ranking down to maybe even in the top 50,” he said.

The next step in the Mitchell Pearce merry-go-round is now official, with veteran Manly five-eighth Blake Green officially signing for the Warriors for three years. The move means Manly now have the space in their roster to accommodate Pearce, who was this week released from his contract with the Roosters.
