Life for Mid Cantabrians on benefits is about to get a whole lot tougher, says a local social services manager. Yesterday’s budget was a sweet and sour package for beneficiaries on one hand solo parents on a benefit and partners of beneficiaries will now have to look for work when their youngest child turns three, but their benefit will increase by $25 per week. These measures are part of a $790 million package which was designed to reduce hardship among children in New Zealand’s most impoverished families. Part of the announcement included a change in the hours for
beneficiaries with part-time work obligations - they will now be expected to find work for 20 hours a week rather than 15. Ashburton Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan said the issue in Mid Canterbury was a lack of public transport. “There isn’t public transport and nor will the jobs be in the right places at the right times to work the 20 hours a week,” Mrs Girvan said yesterday. “And it’s tighter for families with their obligations to go out to work two years earlier and to increase from 15 hours a week to 20 hours a week.” However, Mrs Girvan said on the upside, the increase in benefit rates for
families with children being raised by $25 a week was most certainly a positive. Although it is the first increase to core benefit rates in over 40 years, she said the extra $25 or $1300 per year would be a great help. “It gives you a little bit extra money which is good.” Overall Mrs Girvan said while she was happy to see the monetary increase for families with children, the tagged increased hours and availability of work for solo parents and partners may mean life just got a bit tougher.
