Dad’s long wait for daughter

In 24 hours Alan Hamilton went to hell and back.

After telling her father she was going to a friend’s house his 11-year-old daughter Mary simply didn’t return home.

By 5pm Alan started to worry. He scoured nearby streets, made phone calls.

Three hours later she was still missing and he called Ashburton Police.

“I knew that she was at a friend’s place but it seems she went off walking, but in the opposite way to home,” he said.

Mary was last seen at about 5pm on Saturday in the Oxford Street and Beach Road area.

That call to police kicked off a search that ran through the night. It was the

longest night of Hamilton’s life.

While they searched he waited at home, waiting for a phone call to say she’d been found. It never came.

By Sunday morning he was fearing the worst, but then came the news he’d been desperately waiting for, Mary had been found.

That was at 9.30am, but it would be some time before father and daughter were reunited. Late Sunday Hamilton said he was “pretty upset” about the delay.

“I can’t believe it really, but it’s in the hands of the police, they’ve told me the inquiry is ongoing; I’m just relieved she’s been found. Right now I’m just happy that she’s fine. Police did a great job,” he said.

the reasons for her disappearance were still a mystery. He knows she was found in a street not far from her home and that she was with someone he did not know.

Hamilton said he lived alone with his daughter; he’s looked after her since she was a baby.

Yesterday he was being supported through the disappearance, the aftermath of finding her and the long wait for her return home, by family from Oamaru and friends from Ashburton.

Police were releasing scant details around where Mary was found or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance other than to say a check on CCTV footage from a “local shop” helped identify a vehicle that had given the girl a lift and that from there she was found at a safe location.

Stage Challenge win for college

After months of hard work, Ashburton College’s Stage Challenge team has been rewarded with a haul of awards and titles.

The school was the Christchurch Stage Challenge winners of the open division for 2017. Along with the main prize, the school collected 10 awards of excellence and the “spirit of stage challenge award”.

The school’s narrative was titled One Small Boy, and explored the idea of the power of social media

to transform worldwide thinking.

Centered around the Syrian refugee crisis, Ashburton College teacher Claire Bubb said the narrative explored how the one image of a young Syrian refugee who had drowned, and washed up on a beach in Turkey, had been a catalyst for worldwide attention on the issue.

Given eight minutes to perform the narrative, and not able to make any sound from on the stage, the students delivered the piece in three major scenes.

“In the first scene it was the lit-

tle boy on the beach, then it went in to full on war with soldiers and explosions before a scene in the lifeboat on a sea of students representing the ocean, before the boy goes overboard and is dragged down and drowned by the ocean,” said Bubb.

“The students then came and took photos which were sent all over the world, and the final scene was of a refugee camp, showing refugees with hope and building a future.

“As they weren’t allowed to make noise on the stage, we used

voiceovers and news reports about the little boy which was very powerful.”

The judges’ comments of the performance described it as “confronting, visually stunning and powerful”, and left one judge crying throughout.

A 90-student strong team made the trip to the Horncastle Arena at 7am on Friday, with the group not returning until 1am on Saturday morning.

“The performance was purely student directed, choreographed and produced,” said Bubb.

“It was amazing and had a huge effect on the audience. I am really proud of the students for having the bravery to delve into something so hard-hitting.”

Bubb said many students described it as the best day ever.

The students had 30 minutes on stage to prepare, before spending the rest of the day in “production meetings”, socialising with 1500 other students.

“It was a fantastic experience, the whole thing, creating it and then seeing it come to life,” she said.

An unexpected resignation from the Ashburton Trust board will see the community organisation forced to hold a byelection to fill the vacancy.

Jim Lischner, in his second term as a board member, handed in his notice last week, citing a desire to focus on other priorities including his family and retirement plans. And that resignation could force the trust to part out about $35,000 in by-election costs.

Board member Fay Watson said over his four years as a member Lischner’s business acumen meant he had played a valuable part in guiding the trust as it changed its business model to that of a landlord rather than a hospitality business owner.

The trust has notified the Electoral Office’s returning officer that a by-election will be needed and the process that follows will be similar to a mini-election, Watson said.

Because of the significant cost involved, she’s keeping her fingers crossed that a single, well qualified candidate comes forward. This would avoid the need for an election.

There have been at least two occasions in the past when the trust has had a board member resign mid-term.

Wheels Week Plus is all wrapped up for another year, and has left the organisers very happy with the how the event went.

Committee president Tony Dawson said as the organising committee, a lot of their work is done before the start of the event, but that it is good to see how things go.

“We have been very lucky with the weather, today was a brilliant example, it was great for the parade and people were out watching,” he said.

“Everything seems to have gone off well with lots of participants and good crowds at the events.”

Dawson said the events which were new to calendar this year, such as the garage visit and the mud plug, had been very popular, with the garage visit selling far more tickets than expected.

“I would say it has been as good, if not better than previous years,” he said.

Dawson believes one of the reasons the event has had such a long life and continues to grow is the strong interest in motor vehicles, from a participant and spectator perspective.

“Events have come and gone, it is now just a matter of looking and seeing what we can do next year.”

One of the organisations which drove the starting of Wheels Week is the Ashburton Car Club.

Crowds lined the streets at the SprayMarks Wheels Week Street Parade yesterday, which was one of the final events of Wheels Week Plus.

President Shayne Adams said the street sprints event was one of the events which Wheels Week evolved around.

The club now hosts five events during Wheels Week. Four events took place, but Adams said unfortunately the Quarter Mile Sprint had to be postponed to September 30.

“We have had our best attendance at all

our events this year, with numbers up on previous years,” he said.

“It is great to see the community get amongst it and participate and enjoy all the different events that these clubs put on.

“We know a lot of people come from out of town to participate in the classic car trials, the street sprints and the stock cars, which can only be good for Ashburton.”

Alcohol policy ready to roll

August 28 will be a red letter day for the small group of people who have spent more than five years developing an alcohol policy for the Ashburton District.

The policy was born from the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 which enabled councils to develop a policy that would set rules around the sale, supply and consumption of alcohol, rules that would meet the needs of the community.

Since the first meetings community groups and Ashburton District Council staff have been involved in endless rounds of consultation, planning, proposals, draft documents, final documents, hearings and appeals and finally a date for the policy’s implementation has been set – August 28.

The policy was approved and adopted by the Alcohol Regulatory and Licencing Authority (ARLA) on April 5, but a threemonth public notification period

was set to allow licence holders time to adjust to the new conditions set out in the policy.

The new alcohol policy introduces a number of changes including a one-way door policy for bars and nightclubs in Ashburton (but not rural bars) from 1am, a 2am closing time for bars and tightens off-license hours to 7am to 9.30pm.

Over the coming weeks, council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said affected licence holders would

receive a letter from the council advising them if there were any changes to their licences.

“The LAP introduces a number of changes to licencing conditions with the goal of improving community safety in Ashburton District.

“We encourage the community to familiarise themselves with the policy,” she said.

As the trust has pared back its business and reshaped itself as a landlord, it has slowly shed staff. When it moved into its level one offices in the Burnett Street building there were 13 on the payroll. When it relocates to level two on Thursday there will be just chief executive Robert Reid and two part-timers.

Prison guard stabbed An Auckland Prison guard has allegedly been stabbed by three inmates. The inmates used “improvised weapons” in an unprovoked attack at the Paremoremo jail on Saturday night that appears to be gang related, Corrections NZ said in a tweet. The prison guard was released from hospital shortly after the incident.

The three inmates were also taken to hospital with two being returned to the jail on Saturday night.

Death suspicious

All through a bit of wacky fun, students at St Joseph’s School will now have even more hot rice to enjoy at lunchtime.

Last Friday, the school had a wacky dress-up day in order to raise funds for another rice cooker.

Teacher Claire Corbett said last year through community consultations, the school had noticed a large increase in the multicultural community at the school.

Through this, the school had discovered that there were different ethnicities of students bringing rice to school for lunch.

However, the students were having to eat the rice cold, which resulted in many of them not eating their lunch.

“So we starting cooking hot rice lunches for the students, and they have proved extremely popular, so much so we have now had to look at purchasing another rice cooker,” she said.

“The student welfare committee organised the day.

“The students have been asked to dress-up in wacky clothes and bring a gold-coin donation and food for a shared lunch.”

After the lunch, Corbett said the students would have the opportunity to parade their wacky costumes to their fellow classmates.

The death of a man in a south Auckland suburb on Saturday night is being treated as a homicide investigation. The man was found dead at a property in Carruth Road in Papatoetoe at 7pm on Saturday, Detective Senior Sergeant Richard O’Connor says.

Operation Mainstay has now been launched to investigate.

Cars rescued A snow plough has rescued cars stuck in snow on the Desert Road through the centre of the North Island. The cars became stuck when a burst of snow on Saturday hit the road from Rangipo to Waiouru, which is part of State Highway 1. Police say many of the cars were able to make their own way out behind a plough that cleared the way for them. - NZME

Mid Canterbury political new The battle to win the hearts and minds of the Mid Canterbury voting public has begun in earnest.

Susan Sandys reports.

Mid Canterbury’s political newcomers are cold-calling and knocking on doors in their hundreds as they ply for votes leading into the 2017 General Election.

While the official regulated campaign period does not begin until June 23, the first-time candidates are wasting no time in getting their names and their messages out to the public.

“To me the campaign started the day I was elected,” said National Party candidate Andrew Falloon. He was voted into the candidacy by electorate party members ahead of two other contenders last month.

Falloon and wife Rose were living in Wellington at the time, but he has not been back to the capital since.

The couple have now moved to Timaru, and Falloon is introducing himself to as many people as possible.

When interviewed on Thursday, in the last seven days alone he had knocked on 800 doors, 300 of those in Ashburton and 500 in Timaru.

He was starting at the north west of the areas, so for Ashburton he was beginning in Allenton, and would be working his way across.

He planned to visit all areas, whether they were likely to have typical National voters or not.

“When you are trying to win an electorate you can’t be selective, you need to try and win everyone’s support,” Falloon said.

He had not done any phone calling as yet, but had been to

Green Party Rangitata candidate and Minister of Parliament Mojo Mathers.

many a community event and meetings of various organisations.

Falloon is standing in place of retiring incumbent Jo Goodhew, who won the last election by a massive 13,152 voter majority.

Labour candidate for Rangitata, Jo Luxton, who Falloon met for the first time this week at a community event, is also planning an assault on the door knocking front.

Luxton has a strong party ranking at 28 and represents high hopes for Labour in Rangitata after the party’s 2014 candidate, Steve Gibson, hit headlines for all the wrong reasons.

At the weekend she was to be door knocking in Timaru, and last week said she was in the process of recruiting volunteers and planning out a door knocking itinerary.

Cold calling has been her speciality to date, and she said she had already made several hundred phone calls.

clined to talk, none had hung up on her.

She said the calls were about introducing herself and having a chat, finding out what was on people’s minds, and not so much about policy.

“It’s about reaching as many people as you can,” she said.

Phone numbers were landlines, found from looking at the electoral roll and the white pages.

Luxton has pulled away from her previously fulltime role at her Hinds early childhood centre to focus on campaigning.

It is a different story for Rangitata Green Party candidate Mojo Mathers, whose campaign efforts are restricted by her already busy schedule as a Member of Parliament.

While new to the Rangitata area, having moved to Peel Forest one year ago, she is an experienced politician.

As well as having to spend much of her time in Wellington, Mathers’ roles as her party’s spokesperson for conservation,

The 50-year-old mum of three said she would be focusing on door knocking, although it would most likely not be to the scale of her fellow Rangitata candidates.

Her campaign team had already started phone calls, but that is one job she can not do herself due to being deaf.

In the Selwyn electorate, encompassing the town of Rakaia and the northern area of Mid Canterbury from Highbank to the coast, there is a new Labour candidate.

Tony Condon is up against Selwyn MP and Minister of Justice Amy Adams in one of the strongest National electorates in the country.

“It’s a pretty hard ask, that doesn’t mean we should make it easy either,” Condon said.

Consequently the 47-year-old dad of two, who is new to politics and ranked at only 71 on his party list, has already been out

door knocking in Rolleston and Diamond Harbour, and expects to be in Rakaia next month.

“We are looking at doing at least 100 per week,” Condon said.

He and fellow campaign team members had been cold calling residents for about two months as well, adding up to hundreds of phone calls.

Condon lives at Lincoln with wife Sheryl. He is aiming to get as many party votes as possible and also reduce Adams’ majority.

Her majority at the last election was 18,665 votes over the next best polling candidate, Peter Hill of the Green Party.

ACT is yet to select candidates for Selwyn and Rangitata The Greens have also not yet appointed a candidate for Selwyn.

All candidates must have their nominations in by late August.

Election day is September 23, and June 23 is the start of the regulated campaign period, where candidate election expense limits apply for advertising.

Registry will benefit MND sufferers Ashburton resident Dr Claire Reilly has been instrumental in the development of a significant national research project for Motor Neurone Disease, which launches tonight.

The New Zealand Motor Neurone Disease Registry has been created in partnership between the Auckland District Health Board’s consultant neurologist and neurogenetic researcher, Dr Richard Roxburgh, and MND New Zealand.

Funding has been provided by MND New Zealand, a not-forprofit organisation that provides crucial support to people living with MND in New Zealand, their families, carers and healthcare professionals.

Dr Claire Reilly, the co-ordinator of the nationwide Walk 2 D’Feet MND events, will be the first person with MND to officially enrol with the New Zealand MND Registry.

“I’m overwhelmed and overjoyed to see a Registry for MND launch in New Zealand,” she said.

“Helping create the registry was high on my bucket list.”

Dr Reilly is a medical doctor and will also sit on the registry’s steering committee.

“I consider myself lucky to have lived with MND for 10 years. Most

people with MND don’t live anywhere near that long.

“That’s why a local MND Registry is crucial, because it will allow researchers to quickly find enough participants to create meaningful studies.”

The launch comes just eight months after 4000 participants in 14 fundraising walks in towns all over New Zealand, raised the funds to establish the Registry.

Following the global Ice Bucket Challenge social media phenomenon in 2014, major progress has been made in the development of new treatments for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as ALS (the most common type of MND) or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Several new treatments are in development to improve life expectancy for those with MND, a rapidly progressing neurological disease. Most people with MND live fewer than three years after diagnosis.

When a trial of these treatments is being planned anywhere in the world, it is important that suitable individuals can be found and contacted quickly in order to participate. The best way of ensuring this can happen is to collect an individual’s details in a registry.

Renowned MND researcher Professor Chris Shaw, a professor

of neurology and neurogenetics at King’s College London, says: “I have seen how registries such as this rapidly increase the flow of information about research and clinical trials to patients and their multi-professional teams.

“With better information, many more patients can actively engage in the rapidly changing field of research.

“The Registry, combined with a new MND Research Hub led by Dr Emma Scotter at the Centre for Brain Research, firmly links Kiwi MND patients to the international effort to discover more effective treatments for this dreadful disease.”

In 2011, one in every 200 deaths in New Zealand was due to MND. The worldwide incidence of MND is predicted to increase 69 per cent by 2040.

The launch will begin with a few words from MND New Zealand president Beth Watson, followed by speakers Professor Sir Richard Faull of the Centre for Brain Research, Paul Talman, Principal Investigator of the Australian MND Registry, and Dr Richard Roxburgh, who will welcome Dr Claire Reilly as the first person to enrol with the registry.

A must-see production Addams Family fever will be sweeping through Ashburton this week as the word spreads about the show staging at Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

The Addams Family is a local production, from Variety Theatre Ashburton, and as such the producers have had Mid Canterbury’s pool of extraordinary talent to draw from.

It is that talent which makes this musical comedy one that you must, absolutely must, go and see.

Just like in his sell-out success of Chicago in 2014, director Regan Jackson has proved himself to have an eye for perfection.

The performers no doubt brought their raw talent and experience, and this has been fine-tuned to create the brilliant characters which make Variety’s Addams Family such a success.

From the hilarious Uncle Fester (Dayle Stoliker) to the striking Morticia (Heather McFarlane), the towering Lurch (Brent Gray) to the sullen Wednesday (Michaela George), all characters in this show are brought to life in immaculate form.

Gomez is played by agricultural contractor Chris Woods, and any wonderings about whether he will match up to the natural stage presence of McFarlane are quickly allayed as his excellent portrayal of the eccentric and loving family patriarch unfolds.

He has several singing solos, and both his and other voices in the show are incredible, even right down to the youngest cast member, Year 5 pupil Liam Stoliker,

He is the son of Dayle and Lesley Stoliker, the latter also on stage, aptly playing the kooky Grandma.

Another fresh talent proving himself is 17-year-old Shannyn Miller, who plays Wednesday’s boyfriend Lucas Beineke.

His parents Alice and Mal are played by Megan Hamilton and Gavin Templeton, and one can’t imagine a better casting arrangement as they portray this disillusioned couple with all the nuanc-

es and comedic timing required.

The Ancestors in this show are an important element, both in the storyline and for stage effect, and the singers and dancers portraying the group are outstanding.

Musical director Ella Thomas and choreographer Jessie Thomson can be proud of what they have contributed in delivering a theatrical experience which is musically and visually entertaining, and very funny.

The stage sets and lighting for The Addams Family are nothing

short of stunning, and costumes and make-up complete the picture.

I grew up watching The Addams Family series on television, so thank you Variety for taking me back to the oddball spookiness of the reclusive aristocrat family. For those who are not already Addams Family fans, you will be after this show!

Save our yellow-eyed penguins Megan Gnad

ith all the major news announcements last week, there was one surprising story that seemed to slip quietly under the radar.

A University of Otago researcher said that unless urgent action is taken, Dunedin’s famed and glorious yellow-eyed penguins face almost certain extinction from our beaches.

This tragic outlook – whereby they could disappear as we know it by 2060 – is being put down to warming ocean temperatures, fishing casualties and human interference.

The little guys may appear on the back of New Zealand’s $5 note, but how much value do we place on the rare and native Hoiho?

From a tourism perspective, it should be a lot.

At the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust 20th Anniversary Conference in 2007, eminent Australian economist Professor Clem Tisdell estimated that nature-based tourism relying primarily on the yellow-eyed penguin returned $100 million annually to the Dunedin economy.

A single breeding pair of yellow-eyed penguins could be worth $60,000.

These are returns not to be sniffed at and yet the outlook seems far from optimistic.

Lead study author Dr Thomas Mattern said for populations on Otago Peninsula and around the rest of the South Island, the “situation is all but lost”.

The population had been falling for some time and the number of breeding pairs on Otago Peninsula had dropped to about 200 from 600 in the 1990s.

But, while experts warn the only way to combat this is to mitigate the impact of fisheries and interference by humans and predators, there is good work going on to realise their survival.

The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust has protected habitats along the Otago and Southland coastlines, by providing fencing, planting trees and shrubs, and purchasing areas for penguin reserves.

And the Penguin Place conservation project is a private nature reserve that works to provide breeding opportunities and conservation work funded through guided tours.

They may feel like they’re facing a losing battle down south, but all the work is in place to help protect these incredible creatures.

Now they just need the rest of the country on board to ensure they are given every chance to remain a national icon.

his week the Finance Minister will deliver the National Government’s ninth Budget.

In the lead up, the Government has been making a series of major announcements.

First-up we announced just over $500 million to fund an extra 1125 police over the next four years to make our communities safer.

That’s been followed by an extra $11 billion for infrastructure, taking total infrastructure investment over the next four budgets to $23 billion.

Government drug-funding agency Pharmac is getting an extra $60 million over the next four years, including $20 million in the coming year, which will provide around 33,000 people with access to new medicines.

Regional tourism gets a big boost with a $178 million for tourism infrastructure. A new Tourism Infrastructure Fund will provide $102 million in partnership with local councils and other community organisations, for projects such as new carparks, toilets and freedom camping facilities. Sitting alongside this is a $76 million funding increase for the Department of Conservation to upgrade and develop tourist facilities and co-fund two new Great Walks.

The Budget will include a $321 million Social Investment Package with 14 initiatives designed

Managed Aquifer Recharge This week the district and Mayor have lamented the loss of 370 jobs with the closure of the Fairton Meatworks, those are jobs directly related to agricultural production.

Repeatedly we hear that the agricultural sector must address its environmental footprint.

The Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Trial is a project designed to address some of those externalities.

bring about those results.

As I understand the expectation was to replicate the trial at other sites as the full 500 litres per second was not able to be utilised at the first site.

The water is surplus to the stock system and consents are already in place permitting such a trial.

The Ashburton District Council currently drops surplus stock water into soak holes in an ad hoc manner all over this district.

The contribution required by the Ashburton District Council was permission to use that water for four years to give continuity to the project, which would allow the project team to commit to other sites and fund the required

earthworks in the confidence that the required water was available for the full four years.

Surely using this water to perfect a trial that is having very good environmental results and will assist in maintaining economic activity and employment in this district would be a wise investment in our future.

This council gained power by telling all that was wrong with the previous.

So far they have demonstrated an inability to commit to any long term decisions and in my view, are lacking vision for our district and their sole intent appears to be to rescind any decision made by the predecessors.

It is time for our district’s resi-

dents to make the connection between economic activity and employment opportunities in Mid Canterbury, Agricultural Production and the effects on both that the decisions, or lack of by our Councillors will have.

It does seem somewhat ironic that the Mayor would turn up at a Federated Farmers meeting on Thursday and appeal to the agricultural community to assist in finding employment for the 370 redundant Fairton employees, which is indeed a very worthy idea, but then in the next breath, inform us that her council had rejected committing to the MAR trial for the full four years.

Pippa ties the knot

Pippa Middleton has married a wealthy financier as two likely future British kings and other members of the royal family, including her sister, looked on.

In what was seen by many as the society wedding of the year, Middleton and hedge fund manager James Matthews said their vows in a ceremony at St Mark’s Church in Englefield, west of London. Before the wedding, a crowd of wellwishers and reporters gathered outside the church grounds, hoping for a glimpse.

The wedding party included Prince George, a three-yearold page boy, and two- year-old Princess Charlotte, a bridesmaid. Both are the children of the Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa’s sister.

Prince William and Prince Harry arrived together wearing formal morning suits. They seemed relaxed as they strolled into the church.

Matthews, 41, smiled broadly and sported elegant formal wear set off by a blue vest.

Middleton, 33, came to the church accompanied by her father Michael in a vintage Jaguar convertible. She wore a custom wedding gown designed

by Giles Deacon, a long veil by

prominent hat-maker Stephen Jones, and a sparkly tiara. “(It was) a privilege to show the craftsmanship that my team produces in London and a real testament to Pippa’s support of British fashion,” Deacon said.

Father and daughter had a quiet moment together before entering the church, and church bells rang out as the couple emerged after saying their vows. They were fortunate in their timing - it rained during the ceremony, but the sun had returned before they stepped out of the church.

Tennis star Roger Federer and his wife Mirka were among the guests.

The bride’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, had an elaborate glass marquee built on the grounds of their estate in nearby Bucklebury for the lavish wedding reception Saturday night. Guests were advised to bring two outfits so they could change after the wedding ceremony.

As they drove away, future king George gave a wave to the small group of photographers and cameramen capturing the social event.

Elvis’ jet to be sold Elvis Presley’s last privately-owned jet will be auctioned on May 27, after sitting for more than 30 years on the tarmac in Roswell, New Mexico. The 1962 red Lockheed JetStarOne, which has been referred to as the “lost” jet, is expected to fetch between $2 million and $3.5 million, according to liveauctioneers.com, which is the site handling the bidding.

The aircraft is one of three jets owned by the King of Rock and Roll throughout his lifetime, and was particularly special to him as he owned it with his father, Vernon Presley, reports Daily Mail. “This aircraft has never been restored and features original external painting and detailing, as well as original interior,” the listing reads.

Viaduct warning British police are warning Harry Potter fans not to put themselves in danger by walking along an active railway line to a landmark from the fantasy films. British Transport police say there has been an increase in the number of people walking down train tracks to the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the Scottish Highlands. The Hogwarts Express is shown steaming across the viaduct in several Harry Potter films. Sergeant Kevin Lawrence said many tourists take the Jacobite steam train across the picturesque Victorian bridge, and some walk back along the line to take photographs.

Schoolgirls back with families The 82 Nigerian schoolgirls recently released after more than three years in Boko Haram captivity are being reunited with their families.

Some of the dozens of families were seen at the weekend in the capital, Abuja, where the girls were taken by Nigerian authorities after their release early this month. It was the largest liberation of hostages since 276 Chibok schoolgirls were abducted from their boarding school in 2014.

Five commanders from the extremist group were exchanged for the girls’ freedom and Nigeria’s government has said it will make further exchanges to bring the 113 remaining schoolgirls home.

Many of the girls were forced to marry extremists and have had children. Some have been radicalised and have refused to return. It is feared that some have been used in suicide bombings.

The mass abduction in April 2014 brought international attention to Boko Haram’s deadly insurgency in northern Nigeria, and it launched a global Bring Back Our Girls campaign that drew the backing of some celebrities, including former US first lady Michelle Obama.

‘Greatest Show on Earth’ over Lions, tigers and clowns, no more. It’s curtains for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The weekend was the final chance for fans to see death-defying acrobats, exotic animals and flashy costumes as the circus ended its 146-year reign as one of the world’s biggest big tops.

Ringling’s parent company, Feld Entertainment, announced in January that it would take its final bow this year. Yesterday, under cloudy skies, fans streamed into the Nassau Coliseum in suburban New York to pay their last respects to the iconic show.

Feld executives say declining attendance combined with high operating costs are

among reasons for closing. Ringling had two touring circuses this season, one ending its run earlier this month in Providence, Rhode Island.

The final shows of what was long promoted as “The Greatest Show on Earth” are being staged at the Nassau Coliseum in suburban New York. There were three scheduled shows over the weekend. For those who can’t make it, the final circus show today will be streamed live on Facebook Live and on the circus’ website.

A spokesman for the circus says homes have been found for the animals that were owned by Ringling, including the tigers, horses and camels.

Melania keeps head bare Ignoring President Donald Trump’s past admonition, US first lady Melania Trump did not cover her head in Saudi Arabia on the opening leg of his first international tour since taking office. Two years ago, Trump criticised then-first lady Michelle Obama’s decision to go bare-headed on a visit with her husband. “Many people are saying it was wonderful that Mrs Obama refused to wear a scarf in Saudi Arabia, but they were insulted. We have enuf enemies,” Trump tweeted at the time, including a short-hand spelling for “enough”. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, also left her head uncovered.

Full steam ahead at Sandstone

O

n the hills above the Caledon River in the eastern Free State nestles a great South African secret.

For almost 12 months of the year, Sandstone Estates is a functioning 6000-hectare maize, wheat and soya bean farm, with its own aluminium silos and herd of rare Afrikander cattle.

During a 10-day window in autumn, however, the farm is opened to the public, miraculously transformed into a mecca for hundreds of narrow-gauge railway enthusiasts and volunteers from across the world.

The fans and sightseers either ride on or drive trains across the farm’s 26 kilometres of track (bought from the nearby Lesotho Highlands Water project) and generally have themselves a ball.

Sandstone possesses the largest collections of narrow gauge locomotives, rolling stock and old steam equipment in the country, and at any given moment the air is thick with the hiss and whistle of a bygone age.

Tiger Moths and Harvard trainers buzz overhead and old Chevy pickups and buses from the African Star Bus Service barrel down the dust roads next to the track.

The countryside in this pocket of the Free State is famous for its clear light and Sandstone bluffs.

Mauve and purple cosmos (imported in cattle feed during the Anglo-Boer War) lines the track, and fields of buttery sunflowers flow past the carriage windows.

A photographer’s dream and trainspotter’s delight, Stars of Sandstone is getting bigger and slicker by the year.

“We’re demand-driven,” says Wilf Mole, Sandstone’s director.

“We have craft beer tents now and have brought in a proper chef rather than cooking everything in a massive potjie (a traditional three-legged steel pot). This time we’re aiming to break even.”

There were several headline acts at this year’s event: a “rescued” 1905 Arn Jung locomotive from a sugar estate in Angola and a rare, narrow-gauge Garratt locomotive from a Platinum mine in Rustenburg, the second-oldest loco of its kind in the world.

The Lake Macquarie Light Rail is far smaller than Sandstone but they suffer from many of the same challenges, including funding issues, a shrinking support base and staggering upkeep and overhead costs.

Still, Swanson wouldn’t replace it for anything in the world.

“We’re open by invitation [at the Macquarie Light Rail] and bring in disabled kids, deaf and blind kids and handicapped adults.

That’s where my soft spot for this place comes from.”

Swanson is more sanguine: “Any custom, skill or religion when it comes to steam is one generation away from extinction in Australia – Let’s face it, steam is the province of old farts.

“I’m encouraged by the younger generation here at Sandstone coming up. That’s good news.”

Historic win for Bennett Kiwi cyclist George Bennett has won the Tour of California.

The Lotto NL-Jumbo rider has held on to his yellow jersey in a blistering final 125 kilometre stage, to become the first New Zealander to win a UCI World Tour title.

Bennett maintained his 35 second buffer at the top of the general classification standings, with a 24th place finish on the final stage, 22 seconds off stage winner Evan Huffman.

“I think no one expected this less than I did,” Bennett said.

“People sort of mentioned maybe I could do it.

“Normally I really back myself but today I didn’t.

“After yesterday I was so disappointed, and then today, I just can’t believe it man. I just went.

“Frans Maassen [Lotto Nl-Jumbo sports director] was in my radio, he doesn’t get excited about much, and then after halfway he just lit up and I knew was on a good time, and then I just started riding.

“At altitude you can never really go over your limit, and you can never go really deep, and I just held it.

“When I crossed the line, all the cameras were coming, and then I thought: ‘maybe I’ve done something good’, and next minute, I’m wearing a yellow jersey.”

Authorities say former boxing champion David ‘Tornado’ Sanchez and his brother have been killed in a car crash in northern Mexico.

The World Boxing Association says Sanchez was 25 years old when he died on Saturday. In an online statement it calls him a “great gladiator who still had a long way ahead”. Mexican newspaper El Universal reports that Sanchez’s brother Jonathan was also killed in the crash in Hermosillo, Sonora state.

Rakaia puts in big finish

Rakaia will host Prebbleton next Saturday in one quarter-final of Combined Country Rugby and fill the role of being the only Mid Canterbury-based side with a shot at the major prize in the coveted competition.

They were one of four Mid Canterbury sides to register victories in the final week of round robin play.

The trip up to Oxford would have been a daunting prospect for Sean Carter and Wayne Foxcroft’s men, a state enhanced even further when they switched sides after 40 minutes leading by just five.

After trading early penalties, Rakaia’s only try in the first stanza came from Maleli Sau, who despite having only been back in the side for around a month has now picked up 10 tries for the season and is proving a real handful for opposition sides.

As predicted by the coaching staff, Oxford were up to the task for 70 minutes of the match, before Rakaia extended themselves to run away with the game and

win 32-3, with three tries inside the final seven to eight minutes.

Jackson Donlan had a particularly productive second 40 minutes, scoring two impressive tries.

In other matches next week for the major prize, Southbridge, who topped Section Two, will take on Waihora while Section One winners, Darfield, will host Oxford.

The other match will be between Lincoln and Glenmark/ Cheviot.

Back in Ashburton, Hampstead left it until the last match of the round to grab their first win of the season but did so in style, turning around a 0-13 deficit at half-time to win 34-20 over the visiting Ohoka.

Unlike previous weeks, in which Regan Broker and Maurice McGoon’s men have been flat in the second half, the Hampstead boys came out jet-propelled and left their rivals gasping as they produced long runs from deep in their own territory, while also using the strong wind to their advantage to push deep into the corners.

Josh Nonu was one of the standouts for the Hampstead side, controlling the ball beautifully with a really strong distribution game which allowed some of his free-running backs to express themselves with a bit of flair.

Hampstead will now do battle in the bottom division of the competition, the plate in which they will take on Rolleston and Ohoka again.

Out at Hinds, Southern knew they couldn’t make the top four of section two, but still produced a sturdy effort to beat Kaiapoi 3224.

Tries to forwards Aaron Chudleigh, Tom Fraser and captain Eric Duff were joined by one from fullback, Nick Gilbert with the remainder of their points coming from the boot of Richard Fridd.

Southern now move into the second tier of the competition to play for the Canterbury Supporters Club Trophy where they will be joined by fellow Mid Canterbury side, Celtic who also recorded a win on Saturday, beating Burnham, Dunsandel and Irwell 32-23.

Shane Enright and Nick McCain’s men have promised plenty this season and will rue a few missed opportunities which will may have cost them a spot in the playoffs, but the positive signs are there for both now, and the future of the side.

Southern and Celtic will be joined in their division by Saracens and Kaiapoi.

Methven were expected to be no match for Southbridge in their clash at Methven on Saturday, but as they have done more than once this season, they put in a strong performance that wellexceeded most expectations.

With an average of 40 points a week through their eight games, Southbridge still produced 33 points on Saturday, but Methven did enough to keep them on their toes before going down 24-33.

Andy Pearce’s men have shown glimpses of their abilities this season and will look to carry that confidence through to the Plaque division where they will face West Melton, Hornby and Burnham, Dunsandel and Irwell in the round-robin style playoff format.

The Brumbies moved a step closer to clinching the Australian conference with a 19-10 Super Rugby comeback win over the Kings in Port Elizabeth. Second-half tries from winger Aidan Toua and fullback Tom Banks ended the Kings’ winning run, with the South African side losing for the first time in four matches. The victory by the Brumbies was the first by an Australian team this season in South Africa. Banks scored the match winner with nine minutes remaining after the visitors trailed 10-5 at halftime.

Highlanders run riot The Highlanders have put the Western Force to the sword with a six-try second half in a 55-6 Super Rugby win in Perth. After losing three of their first four games this season, the Highlanders are on a roll with an eighth-consecutive win, demolishing the Force at nib Stadium.

The Highlanders scored eight tries in all to be averaging 39 points a game over their winning run.

Smith gives Foster the coaching seal of approval Wayne Smith has sworn never to help any of New Zealand’s traditional rugby rivals challenge his beloved team.

The 60-year-old veteran, who on Friday announced he will step down as Steve Hansen’s righthand man after the Rugby Championship in October, also gave a public endorsement for fellow assistant Ian Foster to eventually succeed Hansen as head coach.

Smith’s association with the All Blacks started as a player in 1980, briefly continued as head coach in 2000 and included two stints as an assistant to Hansen and predecessor Graham Henry.

Yesterday Smith admitted he had already turned down approaches to become a consultant with the struggling South African Super Rugby side the Bulls and insisted his loyalty to the black jer-

sey would not allow him to sell his talents to the highest bidder.

“I owe [New Zealand Rugby CEO] Steve Tew a lot. He was ... really the first man to put faith in me to lead the Crusaders [from 1997], and allowed me to take [mental skills coach] Gilbert Enoka as a paid employee, so he and I go back a long way.

“Whatever I do in the future, I’ll always pass by him. So you

can guarantee that there will be no white jersey, green jersey, gold jersey, Springbok jersey ... none of those jerseys will ever be involved in my life,” Smith said.

“But I love sharing stuff and I love being involved, so I’ll do some little things over the next couple of years. I might do a week for a club team in Japan or something like that.

“Those sorts of things will

keep me involved enough.”

When asked if he would like to see Foster as the next All Black coach, Smith responded: “Yes ... can I do that?

Spoilers role for Tana’s men

By Patrick Mckendry The Blues’ playoffs hopes are all but over but Tana Umaga’s men can still play an important role in this competition, starting next Friday against the Chiefs.

A defeat at Eden Park for Dave Rennie’s men after their loss to the Crusaders in Fiji wouldn’t be fatal to their finals chances by any stretch, but it would allow the third-placed Hurricanes to sneak ahead of them on the points table.

Currently, both teams are on 43 competition points, with the Hurricanes on top thanks to their superior points differential despite the fact the Chiefs beat them in Hamilton in March.

Every team in the playoff hunt will be desperate to finish as high as they can in order to push for home advantage, and the difference for the Chiefs could be as significant as a trip to South Africa rather than playing the Brumbies in Canberra, and they would hope for the latter.

Last year the Blues didn’t play consistently well until their final three matches, by which time they were out of the finals race.

The pressure was off and they played accordingly.

They were unlucky to lose to the Stormers in Cape Town.

Their list of complaints against referee Jaco van Heerden will be lengthy, but the other side of the equation is that they twice held leads of nine points.

It goes without saying that a more ruthless team would have put the South Africans away but that is a side of their game that they have struggled with for years.

Coach Tana Umaga has made improvements – his players clearly have a plan and they are responding – but while they have

men with the attacking talents of Charlie Faumuina, Akira Ioane, Rieko Ioane, Augustine Pulu and Sonny Bill Williams, they still do not possess the ability to grind out victories against the odds.

The Crusaders’ victory against the Chiefs at Suva’s ANZ Stadium broke a sequence of four defeats by their old rivals and was a perfect pointer for the Blues in terms of determination.

The see-sawing match lived up to the hype and while Scott Robertson’s men leaked four tries, it

was their defence in the second half, allied to the running game of their No10 Richie Mo’unga, which got them home.

The turnaround, after Aaron Cruden and Damian McKenzie were threatening to rip them open before the break, was remarkable and a testament to the belief, fitness and team spirit that Robertson has overseen in his first year in charge.

It was a night in which their championship credentials were proven once again.

A home match against the Highlanders, and away game against the Hurricanes, are looming as key, but the odds on them winning a first title since 2008 are shortening by the week.

The Blues, after their treatment at the hands of the officials at Newlands, will be relieved to play at home again.

The Chiefs have lost only twice this season, but they have wobbled under pressure and battled to wins against the lowly Rebels, Force and Sunwolves.

It’s a match in which the Blues’ experienced players must show the way, and it is their last opportunity to beat a New Zealand team this season.

They are 5-0 against Kiwi teams in 2017, a record which cost them dearly in the end.

Warriors down on confidence, belief

By Michael Burgess Warriors prop James Gavet admits the last two defeats have been “pretty embarrassing” but insists there is a way out of the current malaise.

Friday night’s 30-14 loss to the Dragons was another step backwards, with the Warriors completely outgunned by a St George team coming off a three-match losing streak.

It was a worse performance than the debacle in Penrith, where the Warriors at least produced a compelling first half.

This team is in a serious hole, with no obvious way out.

Players are down on confidence and belief, and looking for places to hide.

That was shown post-match on Friday, when most of the senior players dodged the media, showing the kind of urgency that was missing during the game as they scampered from the dressing room to the team bus.

But Gavet – who is not a big name but is becoming an unsung hero of this team – fronted, as he had done during the match, as one of the best forwards on the park.

“We all know what we are capable of,” Gavet said. “After quite a few semi-good performances and then tossing in those two games [Penrith and St George], it’s pretty embarrassing for all of us.”

James Gavet has emerged as one of the few Warriors’ stars. insight into what is going wrong with the team, who have won only one of their last five matches.

“It’s not feeling really connected at the moment,” he said.

“It might be a bit of belief.

Everybody is trying to find a solution themselves but if we just calm down and trust in what we have been doing from a month ago and back even further.

“We were making huge strides [but] it feels like everything is a bit frantic at the moment.

“Everyone is trying to do things that are a bit out of character.

“We trained well [last week] so it’s hard to explain tossing up that performance.”

The Dragons were missing two of their most influential players in Gareth Widdop and Josh Dugan, but didn’t miss a beat in

Hamilton. They clicked into gear almost immediately, and rolled up the field all night like a Panzer tank division, with the Warriors seemingly unable to do anything to prevent their progress.

The Dragons have one of the most balanced packs in the NRL – with size, power, pace and ballplaying ability – and there was a considerable gulf on Friday night, though the Warriors constantly put themselves under pressure.

“If you are doing back to back ‘D’ sets, or making errors . . . my seven-year-old son would be able to run through,” said Gavet.

“You can only make so many tackles and afford to give away that much ball and let that many offloads go before it ends up biting you in the butt.”

“It all goes hand in hand.

“If we can knuckle down on those simple small details, things you learn in junior footy like locking up the ball [we can] stay in the contest.”

The absence of Simon Mannering has also been a huge factor, with many in the Warriors team looking like lost children in a supermarket without their tireless former skipper on the field.

“He has been a big loss but more so his leadership than his stats,” Gavet said.

“And he has been the glue of our forward pack.

“It would be good to get him back.”

French driver Sebastien Bourdais will have surgery on a fractured pelvis suffered in a crash during Indianapolis 500 qualifying. Track officials said doctors at Indiana University Methodist Hospital reported that Bourdais has multiple fractures in his pelvis and a fractured right hip. Team owner Dale Coyne said in a statement that Bourdais is “in good hands” at the hospital and that the team must wait for him to recover. - PA

Natalie Rasmussen’s reserved, but powerful, raise of the fist at the end of Friday night’s New Zealand Oaks at Addington was a salute to a filly who she is fast considering to be one of her favourite horses of all time.

Naturally, nothing will ever quite measure up to the legendary Black’s A Fake, but if you asked the 16-time New Zealand Group One winning driver who was next, Spanish Armada’s name would be right up there.

“I’ve just got so much time for this horse,” Rasmussen said.

“She’s everything you could ask for in a horse really, she’s one of my most favourite horses at the moment.”

With brimming confidence and a strong knowledge of what was going on around her, Rasmussen was on a one-way mission in the $150,000 Group One and was never going to back down from the challenge of starting off the second row and having to work her way into the race.

“I just had so much faith in her, and what she is capable of.

“Her work during the week was exceptional I thought and she really felt on top of her game so I knew we were good to go heading into the race.

“The circumstances worked out alright, but she did have to work quite a few times in the race in tricky conditions.

“But her staying ability was always going to be her best asset tonight and it showed with the way she really kept at it the en-

SVG leads Winton Red Bull quinella

By Matt Coughlan Defending Supercars champion Shane Van Gisbergen has snatched victory in yesterday’s 200km race at Winton with Jamie Whincup giving Red Bull Racing a one-two finish.

The Holden duo ended Scott McLaughlin’s three-race winning streak despite the DJR Team Penske Ford star starting from pole position.

McLaughlin’s team-mate Fabian Coulthard retained his grip on the overall lead, but Whincup has shaved his lead to just four points.

Whincup, who started from second on the grid, jumped McLaughlin at the start and led for a majority of the race.

But his team-mate seized his opportunity with 10 laps remaining.

“It’s been tough but we’re on our way back and feeling really good,” Van Gisbergen said.

“Fabian was really quick at the end so when I got through to the lead I had to try to put Jamie between us because I knew Fabian would be pushing.

“It worked out, put Jamie back in second and one-two.”

Prodrive Racing Australia’s Cameron Waters was delighted to finish fourth, while McLaughlin was happy to salvage fifth place.

Nissan’s Michael Caruso’s race ended on the 50th lap when he crashed into the wall on the final turn of the circuit, prompting the safety car to be called.

But when the action restarted, Van Gisbergen sense his chance, stalking Whincup

for three laps before making the decisive move.

McLaughlin had claimed a third-straight win for the first time in his Supercars career with a commanding victory in Saturday’s 120km race.

The flying New Zealander continued the form he showed in Perth, where he scooped back-to-back wins, to take out the weekend’s opening race in northeast Victoria.

“I’ve won two in a row but never three – it’s pretty special,” McLaughlin said.

After starting in pole position, McLaughlin was never headed, maintaining control throughout the race.

“I had confidence that I had the car underneath me to do that, but it still takes a lot to win a race in this championship,” he said.

“We got pole, the start was good and then the stop by the boys was fantastic.”

Holden’s six-time series champion Jamie Whincup finished second after a tense battle with McLaughlin’s DJR Team Penske team-mate Fabian Coulthard who was third.

Whincup said McLaughlin and Coulthard had a speed advantage, but was confident his Red Bull Racing team could turn it around.

“It’s nice to just go hard the whole race; it’s almost like GT racing,” Whincup said.

“Instead of nurturing it and just trying to make the tyres survive, we were just flat stick from start to finish.

“We got the most points we could today but we certainly need more speed to go one better.”

Sport Panthers in comeback Penrith have overcome another horror first half and the loss of half their spine to score an unconvincing 30-20 win over Newcastle and claim back-to-back wins for the first time in 2017. A week after giving up a 28-6 half-time lead before beating the Warriors, a disappointing Panthers again looked dead and buried when they went into the sheds with a 14-0 deficit yesterday. However this time Penrith had to climb off the canvas with just 15 fit men, after five-eighth Bryce Cartwright (leg) joined Peter Wallace (groin) in the sheds minutes after the break.

Late charge not quite enough for seniors

A strong second half wasn’t enough for the Mid Canterbury senior football side to stage a winning comeback in local action on the weekend.

Playing in bone-chilling conditions on the Ashburton Domain with a strong southerly breeze ripping across the field, the Mid Canterbury boys were found wanting in the opening 40 minutes of the match as their opponents, FC Twenty 11 hit the ground running.

They scored two opening stanza goals including one rather fortuitous effort which initially came off the crossbar but sat up perfectly for one of the FC Twenty forwards to casually head into the back of the net.

Things look set to get worse in the second half when FC Twenty scored quickly to make it 0-3 before Mid Canterbury launched their attack.

They scored goals from Edward Kettle and Stanly Pokipoki to bring the score to 2-3, but

were unable to level things up before the final whistle blew.

There was plenty of encouraging signs for the senior side though, especially with a lack of players seeing a number of the 19th grade squad fill positions upon their return from their match in Christchurch.

The 19th grade lads enjoyed their third win of the season and will now face a rise up in grade as a result of their dominant success shifting from Division 3, up to Division 2.

They beat Hornby 9-3 up at

Warren Park on Saturday morning, giving them 46 goals from their three matches.

It was another strong week around the grounds for Mid Canterbury based sides with victories going the way of the 15th Grade side, 12-1 over Coastal Spirit, the 14th Grade side 11-0 against Shirley Boys’ High School, 12th Grade who won 4-2 over Nomads and Methven’s 15th Grade side beat Christchurch Boys’ High School 7-4 and the senior side won 3-2 over Western.

Tactix blow great start A third quarter meltdown has denied the Mainland Tactix their first win in the ANZ Premiership yesterday.

Leading by six at halftime, the Tactix found the rarity of leading too much to handle, losing the third period 19-5 on their way to a 63-51 defeat.

That perhaps understates how poor the Tactix were in the

third quarter, following their impressive start to the contest.

a game-sealing 50-37 advantage.

That horror period consigned the Tactix to a tenth straight loss this season, and wasted their best half of the season.

The Tactix were better in the fourth quarter, losing it 18-14, and the Mainland franchise put up more of a fight than in their last clash with the Mystics, when they were thrashed 71-47.- NZME

Halep into Open final Fourth-ranked Simona Halep advanced to the Italian Open final and extended her clay-court winning streak to 10 matches with a 7-5 6-1 victory over Kiki Bertens yesterday.

After dropping five set points while serving for the opening set at 5-4, Halep started knocking her head with her finger as if saying, ‘Wake up.”

After getting broken in that game she held at love in her next service game to end the set. Halep then cruised past her Dutch opponent amid intermittent rain at the Foro Italico.

Day right in the hunt Jason Day found something to ignite his spluttering golf game and produced his best round of the year to be right in the hunt for a second Byron Nelson tournament title. Day had nine birdies in a seven-under-par 63 third round yesterday that left him two shots behind leader James Hahn.

Back at the Irving, Texas tournament that provided the first of his 10 US PGA Tour titles in 2010, everything seemed to fall into place for world No.4 Day, who has been struggling to find the form made him No.1 last year.
