If the petition is successful, Casey said, the end goal is to have a national register of cigarette sales outlets with a licence required to become a seller.

“It’ll be interesting to see where the general public thinks it is appropriate to sell cigarettes. Currently there is no registration of who sells cigarettes and we’d like to see one.”

Local House of Travel voted top retail store

Ashburton could have one of the top travel shops in the country on our own East Street – that’s judging from their latest haul of awards.

House of Travel Ashburton winged their way to Wellington to collect six different trophies at their company’s annual awards evening last weekend.

The store was selected as the Qantas Top Retail Store and took home a Store Customer Champions Award, plus three sales consultants were recognised with Sales Awards and two with Customer Champion Awards.

Collecting the haul in front of around 750 people at the TSB arena felt “pretty cool”, store owner Maxine Whiting said.

“It’s great to be recognised, and feels like all the hard work is worth it – not that we do it for the awards, of course!”

She said they were particularly thrilled with the Qantas award and the Customer Champions Award, the latter of which was judged on genuine feedback provided by Ashburton customers.

Fee hike could see volleyball canned

If the proposed fee increase in Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre is signed off, it could be the end of the sport of volleyball in Ashburton.

Club president Dave Young said that the proposed fee hike of 15 per cent each year for three years would put the sport out of the stadium. If that happened there were no other suitable venues available and it was likely the club would fold, he said.

Before making the stadium its headquarters, the club had used

the Ashburton College gym, but pressure of use from student sport meant this was no longer available, Young said.

“We just don’t have any other options unless we could get back into the college.”

There were a number of families involved in the sport and if stadium fees rose and these were passed on in subs, it was likely some of those would no longer be able to afford to play, he said.

The club has between 90 and 100 members While councillors had backed down on their original proposal

per cent user and 50 per cent ratepayer funded basis.

Complex manager Steve Prescott said he had not received any cancellations yet from sports clubs who were regular stadium users, but he said people were asking questions with many saying they were taking a wait and see approach, wanting to find out if councillors were listening to what people were saying through the long term plan consultation process.

Prescott said his hands were tied when it came to the increases, all he could do was make recommen-

dations; councillors made the decisions.

“But if they want this place to work they have to run it in a realistic manner.”

An alternative to upping fees would be to generate more use of the stadium, but the only downtime was during school hours.

From 3pm it became a juggling act to accommodate user groups.

“We do have to look at ways to try and lift use and those are the hours we have to try and market; we need to get the schools in and using the facility during school hours.”

Will our CBD be smoke-free?

The more readily available tobacco products, the easier it was for people to start smoking and the more difficult it was for smokers to give up, she said.

“Health aside, there’s a huge cost to tobacco and cigarettes and many smokers struggle to make ends meet.”

With tobacco costing $98 for a 50gram pack and cigarettes $27 for a packet of 20, many smokers were looking at a habit that cost in excess of $100 a week.

The New Zealand average cigarette consumption among smokers is 11.5 cigarettes per day. This translates to an annual cost of $4617.

For a person earning the median wage, $959 a week, it would take 34 working days to pay for a year of cigarettes; for someone on the minimum wage, $630, it would take 51 working days.

Ashburton has been a leader in making parks and sports fields smoke free and the health promoters believe there will be strong support for creating a smokefree CBD. An initiative by two Hampstead School students saw Friedlander Park declared a smoke-free area in 2007 starting a process that now sees all council owned playgrounds and sports fields smokefree.

While statistics showed that the number of smokers among Year 10 students was low, there were still

age groups that were heavy smokers, particularly 20 to 30 year old males, Casey said.

A district health board smoking matrix for Ashburton showed that while the town was listed as a

smoking hot-spot, there were areas within where data showed there was a higher proportion of smokers – Netherby, Hampstead and pockets in Allenton and Tinwald, McDowell said.

“Some people are telling us they’ll go without food to buy cigarettes or tobacco and statistics tell us that the average person takes 14 quit efforts before they finally give up,” she said.

Adaptability best solution to relief teacher shortages

Staying adaptable is the best immediate solution to significant relief teacher shortages, local primary school staff said.

In the midst of nationwide education short-staffing, Ashburton teachers are having to teach multiple classes or forfeit their classroom release time (CRT) to cope with a lack of day relievers – but

flexibility is now just part of the job, they say.

One local teacher, who preferred not to be named, said she felt guilty when she had to take time off sick, knowing that relievers are short, and wanting the best for her students.

Budding authors from Fairton School stepped out of their school grounds to share their published books with both young and old audiences yesterday.

Room One have recently been working to produce a printed, illustrated book featuring their own original twist on Little Red Riding Hood, and yesterday groups at Stepping Stones Preschool and Park Street Day Care lent their ears to the tales.

Room One teacher Andrea Small said it was great to be out in the community and to see the children having good chats with their hosts.

Park Street Day Care visit her school to watch their annual show, so it was special to be able to come into town and return the favour, she said.

Ring owner wanted Ashburton Police are on the hunt for the owner of a gold men’s ring. The ring was found and handed into the police station last Saturday, March 17.

Housing Ashburton families

By GreG Groufsky New Zealand needs more state housing. Not just in Auckland and not just in the main cities, but in smaller cities and towns like Ashburton.

There’s a pretty simple reason for this – there are more people needing a home.

In the two years to December 2017, nationally the housing register has increased by 77 per cent from nearly 3500 people and families needing a home to 6182.

The numbers illustrate the increasing demand for state housing, but behind the figures are families and vulnerable people who need a place to call home.

If we don’t build more housing then we’re failing those families who are, in many cases, living in

unacceptable living conditions.

At Housing New Zealand we’re meeting this challenge of getting more people into more homes. We’re building in the cities, but now we’re concentrating on meeting demand in regional New Zealand.

We haven’t had such an ambitious build programme since the 1930s and 40s when the Government built more than 30,000 homes in less than 15 years.

Many of these homes, with their typical tiled roofs and wooden cladding, have served as homes for generations of Kiwis and still do so today.

We are set to build more state houses in regions such as yours, but they aren’t just houses, they’re places for people in real need of a warm, dry and safe

place to raise their families and a place to call home.

We know from experience that having a healthy home gives people a solid platform from which to build lives and communities.

In Ashburton, we’re looking to build 10 new homes, which add to the 186 that we currently own in the area. These modern homes are quite different from your typical state house built last century.

A fourth Mid Canterbury property has been confirmed by the Ministry for Primary Industries as having tested positive for mycoplasma bovis. It is a dairy farm near Ashburton with links to previously confirmed infected properties. The farm is already under movement restrictions. MPI is due to announce within the next couple of weeks whether it will continue to try to eradicate the disease or whether a management programme would be more effective. There are 33 infected properties nationwide, all but one in the South Island.

Funding grants Six groups and organisations in the Ashburton District received more than $30,000 worth of funding in the Community Trust Mid South Canterbury’s first grants round for 2018. The largest share of the funding pool went to Ashburton’s Mckenzie community group. This grant saw $10,000 given to help cover co-ordinator costs. Other recipients were Ashburton Youth Café trust and Ashburton Parents Centre, $5000 each to cover operational costs and childbirth education classes. Ashburton Cadet Corps, $2137 towards the purchase of a gun safe, $5000 towards a squash junior development officer for Mid Canterbury and $3000 to Riverbridge Native Species Trust.

Drug suppliers face tougher sentences Suppliers of synthetic drugs would face eight years’ jail under a bill that has passed its first reading with the support of National and NZ First, the first time this term that the parties have joined forces.

Lewis Jones, who lost his 22-year-old son Calum to synthetic cannabis addiction last year, was on hand to see National MP Simeon Brown’s bill pass its first reading and referred to select committee.

The bill passed yesterday afternoon with National and NZ First in support, while Labour, the Greens and Act opposed it.

Speaking on the bill, Brown paid tribute to Jones and called suppliers of illegal psychoactive substances “despicable merchants of death”.

“Because of how easy it is to get these drugs, within days of leaving rehab, [Calum Jones] was dead.”

The toxicity of illegal psychoactive substances varied, he said.

“When you light up, will it be experiencing a high, or will it be the last thing you ever do?”

Police Minister Stuart Nash said in response that it was a needless tragedy to lose someone to drug addiction.

“I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose a son or a daughter to a drug overdose.”

But he said 91 per cent of prisoners will have a mental health or addiction issue in their lifetime, and the issue was much bigger than simply increasing penalties.

He said it was a political move to use the term “soft on crime”.

“Please don’t say the only way to stop this is to lock people up. That is the language of a community and a society that has lost its compassion.”

Earlier Jones delivered a 1200-strong petition to Brown in front of Parliament, flanked by National MPs Maggie Barry, Simon O’Connor, Tim van de Molen and Matt King.

Jones said he represented those “who haven’t got a voice, the ones who have

passed away, and the ones still being neglected and looking for help”.

“My son actually died from his internal organs disintegrating [from drug abuse], and I didn’t see it from the outside. It puts a lot on me because I didn’t actually know what was going on.”

Jones said tougher penalties was one part of the solution, along with increasing health services, which failed his son.

“I fought like hell to get him into a drug detox centre ... I had to lie through my back teeth to get him into it.

“They let us down. I thought he was in a safe place, but a week before he died ... he was thrown out for a person who needed assistance who was an alcoholic. In that week, he passed away.”

There have been 25 deaths believed to be linked to psychoactive substances.

Brown also called for select committee inquiry into how the system deals with those suffering with addiction to synthetic drugs.

The bill would also bring the maximum penalty for supply in line with the penalty for supplying Class C drugs, such as cannabis.

Labour and the Greens opposed the bill because they don’t believe it will reduce drug harm.

“All it does is imprison people and add to the already ridiculously overpopulated prisons,” Green’s justice spokeswoman Golriz Ghahraman said.

“It’s just a very expensive, useless policy.”

Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell said the bill would have “zero impact” as there was no evidence tougher penalties affected drug harm.

But New Zealand First leader Winston Peters said the bill would see far fewer people die on the streets.

“These [suppliers] are merchants of death and the number of people who’ve died is clear evidence of that.”

The CCS funding had supported two terms of free music lessons, and now 193 Youth was on the lookout for new funding so the lessons could continue.

Jones also played down suggestions he had “bullied” Carter, calling him a “powerful man”.

The government owns 51 per cent of the airline and Robertson, as the finance minister, is the minister responsible.

In a strongly worded letter to Robertson on Tuesday, Carter said Air NZ would act independently of

the Crown and any appearance of a lack of commercial independence was potentially damaging to shareholders.

Robertson yesterday reiterated the government had no role in the company’s business decisions and backed the board.

“From time-to-time politicians of all stripes may disagree with individual decisions made by Air New Zealand, but my belief is the board chair and chief executive are doing a good job,” he said.

As a majority shareholder, the government does wield some power in picking the company’s board – a third of which must stand for re-election in September.

Robertson said nothing had changed about that process.

National’s regional development spokesman Paul Goldsmith said while it was up to the airline to defend its record, Jones had gone too far.

Government minister Shane Jones has been brought down to earth over his attack on Air New Zealand’s management with a talking-to by the prime minister.

Jones, the minister in charge of regional revitalisation, last week criticised the airline – majority owned by the government – saying it was “irresponsible” for cutting flights to some provinces.

While Air NZ warned government interference was “potentially damaging”, the minister refused to back down, saying the company was trading the welfare of the provinces for shareholders’ profits.

Yesterday, he launched a blistering attack on the airline’s board, saying its bosses should stay out of politics or resign, and that chair Tony Carter needed to step down.

That assessment didn’t go down well with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“Calling for the sacking of any board member is a step too far and I’ve told Shane Jones that,” she told reporters yesterday afternoon.

“The Humanity Star was a very unique project,” he said.

“The satellite is very light and its carbon fibre and many reflective surfaces, made its orbit hard to model from Earth.

“Things often perform differently in a space environment, which is what we discovered with the Humanity Star.”

Beck said his hope was for people to look for it in the night sky and ponder humanity’s place in the universe.

“Thousands of people told us they went outside with friends and loved ones to experience it together, and that’s hugely encouraging to me.

“While the Humanity Star was a brief moment in human history, I hope the conversations and ideas it sparked around the world will continue to be explored.

“These are the conversations that will play a part in shaping how we collectively manage our planet and work together to solve the challenges facing us all.”

Rocket Lab’s Humanity Star is expected to reach a fiery doom much earlier than originally thought.

The 8kg carbon fibre geodesic sphere with 65 reflective panels, which resembled a disco ball, was shot into orbit from the Mahia Peninsula on January 21 on board Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket.

The launch also carried small satellites into the Earth’s orbit for US companies Planet Labs and Spire Global.

It was expected the Humanity Star would be one of the brightest objects in the night sky for nine months, but satellitetracking website Satview reported yesterday that it will re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrate at 3am on Friday.

Rocket Lab chief executive Peter Beck told NZ Newswire the Humanity Star was meant to have a brief orbital lifespan and its small size meant it experienced significant atmospheric drag, being pulled back towards Earth much quicker than anticipated.

Serial bomber strikes again Investigators pursuing a suspected serial bomber in the Texas capital faced new threats along with the promise of valuable new leads as their attention shifted to a FedEx shipping centre near San Antonio where a package exploded and the discovery of another, unexploded bomb near Austin’s airport.

Even as they pored through surveillance video footage and collected evidence hoping to get closer to tracking down whoever is behind the series of blasts that have killed two people and seriously wounded four others, a late night scare caused them to respond to a Goodwill store in southern Austin. It turned out to be an unrelated explosion with someone dropping a device sometimes used in military training and it went off, injuring a worker.

Police said they don’t believe it was the work of the bomber, or a copycat. They said such military items are occasionally donated to Goodwill instead of being properly disposed of.

Even before the Goodwill scare, it had been a busy day.

Authorities believe a package bomb that exploded in this Fed-Ex building is linked to the recent string of Austin bombings.

Local and federal authorities confirmed that blast was related to four others since March 2.

port to check on a suspicious package. Federal agencies and police later said that package had indeed contained an explosive that was successfully intercepted and that it, too, was tied to the other bombings.

Authorities also closed off an Austin-area FedEx store where they believe the bomb that exploded in Schertz was shipped.

They roped off a large area around the shopping centre in the enclave of Sunset Valley

and were collecting evidence.

In a statement, FedEx officials said the same person responsible for sending the package also shipped a second parcel that has been secured and turned over to law enforcement. A company spokeswoman refused to say if that second package might have been linked to the one reported at the distribution centre near the airport.

The Schertz blast came two days after a bombing wounded two men in a quiet Austin neighbourhood about 5 kilometres from the FedEx store.

It was triggered by a nearly invisible tripwire, suggesting a “higher level of sophistication” than agents saw in three package bombs previously left on doorsteps.

A criminologist at the University of Alabama said if a single perpetrator is behind the blasts, changing the means of delivery increases the bomber’s chance of getting caught.

Investigators have repeated prior warnings about not touching unexpected packages.

Arise Sir Ringo Call him Sir Ringo now, or Sir Richard to be more precise. Either way, it’s a fitting honour for the former Beatles drummer, who has waited decades for the recognition. The 77-year-old Ringo Starr has received his long-awaited knighthood from Prince William. He used his real name Richard Starkey for the big event.

He said the honour “means a lot”. It comes more than half a century after the youthful Beatles first went to Buckingham Palace to receive MBE awards. The other surviving Beatle, Paul McCartney, was knighted in 1997. “I had dinner with him last week and we were both actually laughing about where we came from, and we’ve ended up in the palace and it’s now Sir Paul and Sir Richard,” said Starr.

Expelled Russian diplomats return home Nearly two dozen Russian diplomats expelled by Britain over the poisoning of an ex-spy arrived home yesterday, while a scientist involved in the creation of the nerve agent said it could be manufactured by other countries.

Former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter are in critical condition in the English city of Salisbury after being poisoned on March 4. Britain said they were poisoned with a class of nerve agent known as Novichok and blamed Russia for the attack.

Russian scientist Leonid Rink said that Britain and others could easily synthesise Novichok after chemical expert Vil Mirzayanov emigrated

to the US and revealed its formula.

“It’s easily available to professionals, and there is no problem for Britain, the US and other developed nations to create such weapon,” he said.

Britain has dismissed claims the nerve agent could come from the UK. On March 14, British Prime Minister Theresa May gave the 23 diplomats a week to leave Britain. Russia responded by expelling the same number of British diplomats, who are expected to leave in the coming days.

carriers. Some hugged before boarding vehicles to Stansted Airport near London for a flight to Moscow.

Russia has fiercely denied any involvement, saying that it had no motive to kill Skripal, who was convicted of spying for Britain but released in a 2010 spy swap. It said that it had completed the destruction of its chemical arsenals last year under international oversight.

Rink said Britain has refused to provide a sample of the agent it said was used in the poisoning because tests would reveal that it hadn’t come from Russia. He said each lab has its own chemical “signature,” allowing experts to trace its ori-

gin. “It would be immediately clear that it wasn’t ‘cooked’ in Russia,” he said.

Britain says experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are taking samples of the nerve agent, which will be tested in international laboratories.

Britain’s National Security Council was meeting to consider possible further measures against Russia. May and other European Union leaders are due to discuss the poisoning at a summit later this week.

The EU has condemned the poisoning and called on Russia to “address urgently” British questions about the Novichok nerve agent programme.

Zellweger plays Garland Renee Zellweger has transformed her looks and is working on her singing skills as she starts a new film about Judy Garland. Principal photography for Judy is under way in London, and the producers have released a photo of the Academy Award winner playing the troubled star. The movie is set in the late 1960s near the end of Garland’s career and will feature the behind-the-scenes drama before Garland died in the city at age 47 in 1969. Zellweger is expected to sing in the film, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow from Garland’s 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. Zellweger sang in the 2002 film Chicago.

Bring on smoke-free public places I

s turning Ashburton’s central business district into a smokefree zone an aspirational dream or is it achievable?

Certainly it’s on the radar for Ashburton’s health promoters and they’ve mounted a public campaign to help drive that dream forward. It’s a bold move, but it’s one that many will give the thumbs up.

Getting support, however, may just be the easy part, ironing out the kinks and coming up with a way of going smoke-free without penalising anyone but the smokers won’t be easy.

While a smoke-free CBD has been likened to an alcohol-free (except for licensed premises) CBD, clearly it won’t be quite that simple. As a licensed product, it’s easy to restrict consumption of alcohol to specific parts of town,

those covered by a liquor licence.

Not so easy when it comes to an unlicensed activity such as smoking.

One could assume that smoking will be permitted in outdoor bar areas, but that will do nothing to stop the annoying issue of smoke drift. And it will continue to make outdoor bar areas offlimits to anyone not wanting to inhale second-hand smoke.

And it’s smoke drift and second-hand smoke that are the most annoying issues around

people puffing away in public.

Fine if they want to fill their bodies with nicotine, but not fine for the rest of us who’re within their orbit. Walk past a smoker on the street and you have two choices – hold your breath or get a lungful of smoke.

You have to applaud the local health promoters and the local council. Together they’ve already achieved smoke-free parks and sports fields. Those promoters have worked with café owners to achieve smoke-free outdoor dining areas and they’ve been part of the national drive that’s achieved smoke-free workplaces.

It’s the next step that will be the hardest.

Calling time on smoking will take a two-pronged approach, both requiring government intervention.

Currently there’s a postcard petition circulating calling on the Prime Minister to take action by creating fewer opportunities for people to buy cigarettes. And that makes sense.

We regulate the opportunities to buy alcohol and require those selling it to have a licence.

We regulate the sale of cigarettes by age but there is no licence required to be a seller.

It’s a simple solution. Limit the outlets able to sell, require each to apply for a licence that mirrors a liquor licence in that it must be renewed annually and comes with tight conditions and a high cost. Add that to controlling more areas where smokers are unable to smoke and that clearly sends the message that smoking is not a socially acceptable activity.

Pushing the price of tobacco products up each year works – to a degree – but committed smokers will go without other essentials to buy a buzz.

If you’re not a smoker it’s easy to slam smoking as a recreational pursuit without merit. But what else is it?

It’s hard to find anything redeeming about smoking – it’s bad for your health, it can kill you, it makes you smell bad, it pollutes the air and it costs a fortune.

Not a lot of reasons to go there and yet every year young people are pulled into smoking’s web.

As long as tobacco products are readily available and it’s acceptable to puff away in public, there’ll be new smokers stepping out on a journey that has just two clear outcomes – ill health and poverty.

Census helps the Govt make better decisions A

s a new Government we’ve made a big deal out of our commitment to do our job differently – to be fairer and more inclusive in the way we spend public money, and how we make the big decisions that affect the people, and the landscape of New Zealand. And that doesn’t just mean those living in the big cities, but us in the regions too.

Recently, thousands of Mid Cantabrians did their bit to help us make better decisions about healthcare, schooling, housing, and the other core roles of government, by telling us about yourselves in the census.

We know that Mid Canterbury has low unemployment rates and relies on migrant workers to fill the many positions available.

The proposed implementation of a regional skills shortage list will enable us to get, and importantly, keep these workers in our region.

But with the information from the census we can target our plans and our decisions more finely, to make the changes New Zealand needs.

Housing is a real priority for the Government. We’ve already seen progress begin, with new state houses being built in Ashburton currently. These homes will be dry, warm and safe places for our people to call home.

In health, we’ve pledged to invest an additional $8 billion over four years. Census information will help us target new resources to DHBs in areas hardest hit by nine years of neglect and underfunding.

This means better access to the top quality of care, support and treatment.

Everyone should have affordable access to great health care, whether you’re living in a big city or living here in Ashburton.

In education, census information will help the Government deliver on its plan to modernise New Zealand’s schools.

We’ll build schools and ko-

hanga reo where they’re needed most and ensure that outdated and worn-out school buildings are a thing of the past.

Thank you again for supporting the census. By taking part, you’ve helped make New Zealand and the Rangitata electorate a better place.

Plunket needs to apologise

’m so gutted by this Plunket story. Mainly because, like lots of new mums, I used and loved Plunket when I had my babies.

Measurements of milestones, tips, connecting you to other new mums in and around your community. But the service now finds itself in a bit of a pickle.

It’s been revealed that 11 senior managers last year were paid salaries of more than $180,000 – and almost $2 million was paid out to consultants.

The organisation’s consultancy payments were up by $600,000 from the previous year.

All of that before we get to the community of Pirongia, which is at war with Plunket, saying the $25,000 they raised to build a new playground has gone missing. Oh dear. Not a good look.

And charities can ill–afford bad publicity.

What charities need is donations, support, and community backing – not scandals. Just ask Oxfam.

The worst criticism came from a mum who said that Plunket had “morphed into a marketing

company trading off a 100-yearold brand that New Zealanders know and love”. She called it “appalling”.

When your support base starts calling you appalling, you have a problem. But it’s not just the mums.

Hard-working volunteers aren’t happy either. They’ve been asking for their money. And Pirongia wants its playground. There’s talk of getting lawyers involved.

Plunket’s not accepting the criticism though and here’s the rub.

Is Plunket a victim of trying to modernise itself? A 100-year-old

institution trying to stay current, adding layers of bureaucracy and zhooshing itself up with consultants – is this best practice in terms of branding?

Do we expect flashy brochures and fancy booklets from Plunket?

No. Do we want informed dedicated nurses? Yes. That’s the heart of it, the people at the coal face, not the marketing and the external consultants. In defending the moves, I heard Plunket’s CEO saying they brought in project managers.

Project managers?

Anyone who’s hired one of

those know that you’re paying someone to oversee stuff that everyone else was getting on with anyway.

It’s Plunket, not an overhaul of a glitzy department store.

It’s a grass roots Kiwi charity serving families, so has it lost its way?

Plunket says it won’t apologise for trying to bring in the best people. But it should apologise – to the disgruntled nurses, to Pirongia and the parents who’ve lost faith.

When people give you their hard-earned cash to support you, they expect you to be beyond reproach.

Plunket’s total income last year was $85m – three-quarters of which was taxpayer-funded.

They need the taxpayer.

They also need to maintain a good reputation, keep communities on board and spend less on consultants and project managers.

I can’t help but think Plunket has cocked this up.

Constructive dialogue is vital

t was pleasing to read in this newspaper on Tuesday that farming industry groups have opted for a softly-softly approach to dealing with the Labour-led Government.

In a syndicated column, Fed’s meat and wool chairman Miles Anderson wrote of the need to keep things constructive in those dealings and base any arguments around experience, science, what is practical and what is affordable.

who said failure to engage constructively with the new government meant running the risk of being shut out.

And there-in lies a key point.

While there are always going to be differences of opinion, even straight out disagreements, it does not mean dialogue can’t continue. In fact it must.

On the face of it there were a few election campaign ideas put forward by the current government that, not surprisingly, got many farmers’ backs up.

However, now that the people who put forward those ideas are in power, it’s more important than ever to maintain a presence in the consultation process.

Those campaign policies are not yet reality, so farming groups need to show how reasonable and willing to work with others they are, even if they don’t like some of the ideas involved.

That’s all part of living in a democracy, sometimes you’ve got to take the bad with the good, and by staying constructively

engaged with the other parties involved you have a much better chance of having some sort of influence in the final outcome.

Failure to do that more often than not results in having rules and regulations forced down your throat that take none of your concerns into account.

And that can be hard to swallow.

Mt Somers farmer Kate Acland has been appointed as an associate director on the Beef + Lamb NZ board.

Acland, who replaces Marton farmer Andrew Stewart in the one-year role, runs a highly diversified group of businesses employing 25 staff with her husband David.

She developed her own vineyard, winery, processing and export business in Marlborough before moving to her husband’s family farm, Mt Somers Station; a large-scale foothills property in Mid Canterbury running 30,000 stock units in a mixture of sheep, beef, deer, an 850-cow dairy unit and a honey operation.

Bachelor’s degree in viticulture and oenology and a Master’s Degree in applied science, majoring in farm management consultancy from Lincoln University.

Acland will be joined on the board by King Country sheep and beef farmer Martin Coup who has been elected to represent the Northern North Island region as a farmer director, replacing former chair-

man James Parsons who will stand down at the organisation’s annual meeting on March 22. Martin won 5392 votes.

The position was contested by Murray Jagger from Whangarei (2210 votes) and Ross Wallis from Raglan (1128 votes).

The voting return percentage was 16.91 per cent, which represents 19 per cent of sheep, 18 per cent of cattle and 12 per cent of dairy livestock numbers in the region.

Coup and his wife Wendy farm a 700ha sheep and beef farm at Aria. He is a farmer representative on the Red Meat Profit Partnership Advisory Group and MidNorthern Farmer Council. He was national chairman of the B+LNZ Farmer Council for three years, chaired the organisation’s Innovation Farm Advisory Group and also served a three-year term as a director on the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand.

Young gun takes honours

BY DOUG LAING Up-and-coming South Island open-class shearer Paul Hodges stuck another feather in his cap when he won the Methven Lamb Shears Open final on Saturday by just eight-hundredths of a point from veteran former New Zealand representative Grant Smith.

With defending champion Ant Frew and veteran 2012-2016 winner Tony Coster both missing from the line-up, it was up to Hodges to throw out the challenge, which he did first by heading the field of 11 in the heats.

Smith, the winner in 1997 and 2005 and having on March 3 finished runner-up in the PGG Wrightson Wool National Circuit final in Masterton, was topqualifier for the three-man final, in which Pleasant Point veteran Kevin Hessell was first to finish, taking 15min 40.53sec for the 15 lambs, carrying about five months’ first wool.

Hodges was second off five seconds later, with the best board points, but Smith, having finished in just under 16min 11sec almost stole the event with the best points in the pens.

nal win around the smaller South Island shows in his two seasons since graduating after five senior shearing wins in 2015-2016.

Having won at Reefton on February 3, it was his second open win on lambs, and a win which pleased competition organiser

Bruce Lilley who has been involved in running the event for about 34 years, one of the longest running competitions in New Zealand.

“It is good to see the younger ones coming through,” Lilley said.

The presence of such competitors as Golden Shears winner Brandon Maguire Ratima and fellow Southland shearer Brayden Clifford in the lower grades helped boost the entries, which were up 12 across the grades on last year’s entries.

On a day of mainly close finals, Smith’s son, Alex, won the senior final by 0.8pts from Geraldinebased Chilean shearer Luis Pincol, and Maguire Ratima beat Cheviot shearer -Liam Norrie by just 0.16pts in the intermediate final.

Clifford won the junior final by almost 3pts from runner-up Mitchell Menzies, of Ranfurly.

Three competitions remain in the South Island this season, the Flaxbourn A&P Show next Sunday and the Oxford and the Mackenzie Shears’ national lambshearing championships at Fairlie on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday respectively.

$8.3m man gives up Fonterra leadership Fonterra chief executive Theo Spierings (right) has resigned and will step down later this year.

The co-operative’s chairman John Wilson made the announcement at the Fonterra results yesterday morning.

Speaking at the end of a presentation on its first-half results, Wilson said the board had started a global search for a new chief executive late last year, and the board had decided to bring forward the announcement of Spierings’s departure after some seven years in the role.

“We are in the process of the CEO succession plan and we’re committed to the smooth transition to the next chief executive,” Fonterra said. “We do envisage that even with the new CEO, Theo remains in an advisory role.”

Spierings said he was approaching the seven-year mark and it had been “quite a ride” but when he came in he could see Fonterra was the envy of the dairy world and that was still the case.

“Fonterra remains close to my heart,” he said.

Five to seven years was a normal period of tenure, he said, adding of the future that he would like to focus on a better world rather than

a bigger job.

Wilson said Spierings had made an extraordinary contribution to Fonterra. He said the company was well positioned to find a leader for the next phase of its strategy.

“It is all about timing, we need the right leadership at the right time – and now we’re in the position to determine the next step.”

Spierings said the role would require someone who was able to adapt, with China a major focus.

“We are a strong co-op and now we’re starting to grow our sustainability and innovation,” Spierings said.

“We need someone dedicated to that in the next five to seven years.

Other industries are being heavily disrupted by technology, and if we’re not on a disruptive journey every day – we’re going to be affected later on.”

Dutchman Spierings took over the role as Fonterra chief execu-

tive in 2011, replacing Andrew Ferrier and beating out other internal candidates for the job.

Prior to this, he led Dutch dairy co-operative Royal Friesland Foods in its 2008 merger with Campina and has more than 30 years’ experience in the dairy industry.

Spierings caused controversy last year when it was revealed he was the highest paid executive of a publicly-listed company, pulling in $8.32m last year.

In an interview with the Herald last year, he said he wasn’t looking to move on just yet, saying, “I have seen many CEOs who have been in companies like Fonterra for a very long time.”

Over his career, Spierings has had extensive experience across the dairy industry, particularly in Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

His roles have included general management, operations and supply chain, and sales and marketing positions and he has a Bachelor of Arts in Food Technology/Biotechnology and a Master of Business Administration.

Wilson said the decision was not a reaction to the co-operative’s performance, saying “Theo has

delivered extraordinary value”.

Spierings would continue in the role until a new chief executive was appointed and was likely to continue in a consulting role during the handover process. This comes off the back of Fonterra’s result, which showed an after-tax loss of $348 million in the first half to January 31, down 36 per cent.

However, board chairman John Wilson said the loss included a one-off Danone settlement and a write-down of the value of its Beingmate investment and its normalised profit is $248 million.

“While our reported net profit after tax shows a loss of $348 million, it includes the payment to Danone and the Beingmate impairment,” Wilson said.

“As these are one-off events, our normalised net profit after tax of $248 million is a better reflection of our underlying operating performance for the half year.”

The company said it had written down the value of its investment in Beingmate by $405 million to $244m. Beingmate, which develops and sells children’s food and infant milk formula in China, in January downgraded its earnings for 2017 to a loss of $171 to $214m.

By Tamsyn Parker New Zealand’s stormy start to the year is likely to result in more than $80 million worth of claims to insurers in just three months.

Figures from the Insurance Council of New Zealand show more than $65m of claims have already been made, but that doesn’t include Cyclone Gita.

Three major storms have hit the country so far this year.

The January storm that caused flooding and slips in and around the Coromandel, Kaiaua on the western side of the Firth of Thames and the Bay of Plenty cost $26.7 million.

Cyclone Fehi hit on February 1, causing widespread wind damage and flooding in coastal towns and states of emergency were declared

in Dunedin and Buller.

So far insurers have had $38.5 million in claims relating to Fehi.

Data from Cyclone Gita, which hit New Zealand on February 20, has yet to be finalised.

But a spokeswoman for the Insurance Council said she expected claims relating to Gita to be similar to the other two storms – around $20m to $30m.

Tim Grafton, chief executive of the Insurance Council, said the costs were not insignificant.

“We’ve had $65.2 million in insured losses from extreme weather already this year, off the back of two storms in the first quarter, and we’re yet to receive the data for Cyclone Gita.”

The stormy start to 2018 follows the most expensive year on record in New Zealand for weather-relat-

ed losses at $242 million.

The most expensive storm of 2017 was Cyclone Debbie, which struck in early April and resulted in $91.5 million worth of claims.

Grafton warned that climate change meant New Zealand was likely to see more frequent, severe storms.

“It’s important that we don’t lose sight of the impact cumulative extreme weather can have.

“And this is the sort of thing we can expect to see with ongoing climate change – more frequent, more severe storms.”

Bolognese is a dish that can be incredibly delicious if it’s done well. The crumb adds a delicious texture and if you make it, there won’t be any left at the end, that’s a promise. Serves 4-6

1/2 C oregano, chopped fresh Ciabatta crumb 1T oil 1/3 loaf ciabatta (or any toast bread), processed to a very coarse crumb 1T chopped fresh rosemary Pinch of salt for seasoning To serve Hot cooked spaghetti Grated parmesan Chopped parsley ■ Ciabatta crumb: Heat the oil in a frying pan over a mediumhigh heat. Add the crumbs and rosemary and cook, stirring, for about 5-10 minutes until the crumbs are crunchy and golden on the outside. Season and set aside.

■ Bolognese: Heat the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a high heat. Add the mince in batches and brown. Drain the mince and set aside in a bowl.

■ Heat another tablespoon of oil in the same pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft. Increase the heat, add the tomato paste and stir for 3 minutes until it changes to a darker red colour. If using, add the red wine and let it bubble up for 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes, sugar, mushrooms, oregano (try rubbing it in your hands first to release the oils), stock and the mince. Simmer for about 30 minutes or until the sauce has reduced to your liking.

■ Add the spinach, courgette and fresh oregano and simmer for a few minutes until the excess liquid has evaporated. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

Serve over al dente spaghetti and sprinkle with parmesan, the ciabatta crumb and parsley.

Age Concern Ashburton Age Concern were delighted with the response to their Positive Ageing Expo held at the Racecourse on Thursday March 8, from both the site holders and the number of public who attended. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Robin gave a very interesting presentation with many excellent photographs of the amazing flora and fauna on these distant islands.

Landings on the islands they were allowed to visit were by Zodiac inflatable craft; the weather was not always pleasant and sometimes the seas were very rough, causing some people to succumb to sea sickness, but the month spent on this excursion will make a lifelong memory.

Trevor passed a vote of thanks and presented Robin with a fruit tray The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Peter closed the meeting at 3pm and afternoon tea was served.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, April 16 where the speaker will be Tina Mitchell the Deputy Banking Ombudsman.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club

And in Picton for the Crowe Tournament, Benny, Geo Crack and Neil A. had 5 out 6 to qualify and but lost in the semi-final.

Ashburton Creative Fibre On March 26 we will meet at 8.45 at the Racecourse Hotel car park for the bus trip to Coopers Creek Mohairs and Heavenly Wools.

April 7 a friendly spin in the Bradford room Event Centre at 1.30pm spinners plus people to have a go. Display of articles etc.

May 5 we will set up in the Plains Museum room for Wheels Week. An invitation to anyone to come and have a go at spinning. Sheryl Stivens will be guest speaker and bag competition judge at Aeas day in September.

Prizes for best embellished bags will be 1st $50.00 2nd $30.00 and $20.00 for 3rd.

At the AMP show we have Bare Bears using home spun wool. Dressed bears and any made from other fibres can be entered in knitting, crochet or teddy bear classes.

The evening muster (learn to spin) will be at the Plains Museum May 9. The next meeting will be April 16 the theme, Autumn Tints.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club Congratulations to all members who made the afternoon concert at the Tinwald Hall such a success.

It was a great afternoon. Lorraine Boud welcomed us with a variety of lovely music this evening.

Janet Smith reminded us of the trip to Timaru on Monday March 26. First up this evening was Iris Taylor on keyboard with some lovely old numbers Oklahoma. Next was Elizabeth McCormick who played Yellow Bird, The Wonder of You among others. Well done.

Bev French on piano gave us The Place Where I Worship and Remember You’re Mine among others. Great to hear the piano.

Colin Crone playing the keyboard gave us music from the movies which we had to guess the name of the movie and artist: Hogwarts Inn from Harry Potter, Hogie Carmichael playing Georgia on My Mind, great fun trying to identify some of the tunes.

Irene Williams on piano accordion played Elizabeth Morrisons 2 Step. Iris and Irene on keyboard – piano accordion and banjo – played When the Curtains of Night.

What a lovely combination. Really enjoyed it and would love to hear more.

Alan Andrews gave the piano a “rattle” along with Gloaming, Wayside Chapel, love the piano.

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club held their monthly meeting on March 15 at the Seniors Centre at 2pm.

Our Vice-President, Audrey Leath welcomed 27 members to the meeting. We had a minutes silence for Amy Chiltern who passed away recently.

Our normal meeting followed, then we grouped into smaller groups for a Quiz afternoon. With sets of questions pertaining to gardening, generally a mix of easy to a little more obscure, it proved to be a fun afternoon, with rewards of chocolate snacks after each set.

Ashburton Writers’ Group President Julie welcomed members to the March meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group held recently.

Julie gave an instant exercise, testing our knowledge of verbs, adjectives and nouns.

After another word exercise, the meeting concluded at 2.45pm with the serving of afternoon tea.

The April assignment is “Dear Diary”.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday, March 19 President Peter Thomas welcomed 50 plus members to the monthly meeting of Grey Power Ashburton.

The club had a good turnout for its AGM with one visitor. Retiring President Roger Lake inducted one new member, Ross Todd, and congratulations were passed for two members celebrating their 90th birthday. Moving on to our AGM, treasurer Carl Ruddenklau briefly reviewed our current balance sheet and Roger Lake gave his president’s report before handing over to new president, Barry Quantock. Barry then introduced his incoming committee.

Our guest speaker, Danny Lysaght, was introduced by Bill Doak. Danny gave us a talk on his jet boating experiences which began seriously about 40 years ago when he teamed up with Mark Cromie of Rakaia.

In 1979 he was trailer crew for Norman Bagrie competing in the NZ River racing marathon.

In 1980 Mark invited Danny to crew with him in the NZ marathon. They were young and inexperienced without sponsors but they performed well and in 1983 and 1986 came first in the NZ event.

In 2005 he teamed up with Andrew Stewart racing a tunnel boat and won the NZ marathon in a record time.

He has also held numerous administration roles for jet boating but today is a recreational jet boater fishing on the Rakaia River and each year goes boating on rivers in the Haast. Danny is also an accomplished pianist so he finished his talk with a selection of tunes on his electronic organ.

Bob Jones thanked the speaker and president Barry closed the meeting.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club The Annual General Meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club was held recently.

After the National Anthem, President Bernie Tutty welcomed members and celebrated birthdays and anniversaries.

Julie Begg read some sayings which members could relate to, especially from Over the Teacups. The raffles were drawn.

After morning tea, President Bernie read a full Annual Report, thanking members who had given mini talks and said the Club was about Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. The Financial Report was presented.

The Election of Officers were taken by Karen McIntyre and the results were President – Val Johnson, Vice President –Colleen Keenan, Secretary – Marg Watson, Treasurer – Ruth Clucas and Committee – Heather Mowat, Julie Begg, Lorraine Pringle and Avis Kingsland.

Members can also be co-opted if the need arises. The Chain of Office was presented to the new President.

The retiring committee members – Bernie Tutty, Margaret Haskett and Olive Munro were thanked for the time they have given to the club. Barbara was also thanked for playing the piano for the national anthem, and Rae for writing the reports for the newspapers.

The Thought for the Month – There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is Attitude. The big difference is whether it is Positive or Negative.

Run and Walk Ashburton Saturday March 17 eight walkers and four runners met at the domain oval pavilion at 1.30pm.

An overcast and cool day.

The walkers went out as far as Racecourse Road up to Farm Road and back down Alford Forest Road, some returning by a shorter route.

The runners went down the south side river track up to Allenton club rooms and back.

The early morning group (7.30am) had four runners who went down the river track.

“It was a really tight selection in the mix of the group,” coach Clark Laidlaw said. “We’re more than happy with the way he is going but for this one tournament we went with a bit more experience and guys who could play across the line in the backs.

“For an 18-year-old straight out of school we’re massively excited about his contribution for the rest of the year heading towards the World Cup. “It’s never nice speaking to players not selected but it’s something we’ve worked really hard on. It’s not about the individual.

We want to build a group that has a bigger picture to it.

“As you’d expect he was disappointed but the way he has trained this week is a credit to him.”

Fellow teenager Caleb Clarke, named player of the tournament for the Blues at the Brisbane Tens, also missed out but will travel as injury cover.

Bay of Plenty 21-year-old Ngarohi McGarvey-Black forced his way in on the back of maiden appearances in Las Vegas and Vancouver.

Joe Ravouvou, a sevens regular, wasn’t included as he does not hold a New Zealand passport.

“We think the balance between power, pace and our creative playmakers is really strong so hopefully we can execute the

game plan that suits us.”

It has been an inconsistent season from Laidlaw’s side who sit third on the World Series standings behind South Africa and Fiji after seven tournaments. The absence of USA and Argentina help their quest for gold in the Gold Coast but living up to the rich history at these Games – four gold and one silver medal – will not be easy.

Laidlaw has attempted to tap into the knowledge of Tim Mikkelson and assistant coach Tomasi Cama, both of whom won gold in 2010.

“Those experienced guys have some really good insights about where we need to focus our attention.”

Albatross a one in a million shot Mackenzie Gibson has just tasted perfection – and it was pretty sweet.

Gibson, 19, hit a rare albatross – a hole in one on a par four – on the ninth hole at the Chisholm Links course on Monday night.

One of the most picturesque in New Zealand, the hole, known as Lawyers Head, is 335m from the white tees to the green.

Gibson admitted he hit his driver wood well.

“I gave it a great rip. I had a bit of a down wind but nothing out of the ordinary for Chisholm,’’ he said.

“I saw it land and it was probably going to be on the green.

“There was a group on the green and they went a bit mental so I thought it was pretty close.’’

The All Blacks are the 17th most dominant team in the past 20 years according to a list compiled by ESPN The Magazine. The sports publication compiled the list as part of their 20th anniversary issue, where it looked at the best teams across all sports to decide which teams were the most dominant over the past 20 years. Topping the list were the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors who last year went 16-1 in the NBA postseason, the best ever showing in a single NBA post-season. Surprisingly for the American-centric publication, second place went to the Australian men’s national cricket team of 2002-03, during which they extended their win streak to 16 test victories and won all matches at the Cricket World Cup. The 2015 All Blacks, who became the first team to win back-to-back Rugby World Cups, only managed 17th on the list.

They were eclipsed by a range of American and international teams including the New York Yankees, the Chicago Cubs and the Brazilian national football team.

Omission ‘lack of experience’ Etene Nanai-Seturo’s surprising omission from the men’s Commonwealth Games sevens team has been attributed to a lack of experience.

Earlier this year New Zealand Rugby and the Warriors needed mediation to settle the battle for the highly-rated teenager.

As a 15-year-old, Nanai-Seturo signed a five-year deal with the Warriors, only to then decide his future was in rugby union.

Under the agreement to release Nanai-Seturo, the Warriors received what is thought to be a sixfigure compensation payment.

Ashburton College softball teams competing in the South Island Secondary Schools’ Division 2 tournament on Argyle Park this week had a day of mixed fortunes yesterday but will be hoping to end on a high when they take to the diamonds in today’s final day.

It’s been a busy week at the usually sleepy Argyle Park with teams from across the South Island in town for the tournament which has returned to Ashbur-

ton after a 30-year absence and Mid Canterbury Softball’s Carl O’Neill said that they couldn’t be happier with how things have gone.

“It’s been a great week so far,” he said.

“Apart from the weather of course, but you can’t do much about that.”

The boys’ side started their day on the right foot, putting on a comprehensive performance to beat Burnside College 18-3 yesterday morning which saw them do enough to qualify for a

lower play-off spot.

They first faced Dunstan College in the afternoon but despite some strong play were beaten 0-10.

They then played Dunstan again later in the afternoon for a play-off berth but were beaten again 0-13.

They will be back on the diamond at 11am this morning however in a play-off for fourth and fifth against Timaru Boys’ High School.

It was an opposite sort of day for the Girls’ side who opened

their day with a tough loss against a slick Southland Girls High School side who got the better of them, winning 18-3 – it was an improvement however on the 1-18 score line when the two sides met at the start of the competition.

They then played Buller High School in the afternoon and recorded a 7-0 victory to assure them a spot in the playoff for third and fourth tomorrow morning. Prior to that they will play their final pool match against Burnside College at 9am.

Tributes flow for former All Black Dylan Mika Tributes and heartfelt condolences have been flowing for former All Blacks flanker Dylan Mika who passed away on Tuesday.

Mika, who was a popular figure in Auckland and Samoan rugby, died from a suspected heart attack.

The 45-year-old was vicepresident of the New Zealand Barbarians club and was an active member of the rugby community.

Blues coach Tana Umaga, who played with Mika in the All Blacks and became good friends with his fellow Samoan, said it was a sad loss for rugby.

“Dylan was a good man and a very good teammate and friend,” Umaga said in a tribute on the Blues’ website.

“He was always making sure you were ok and he would organise things to keep everyone’s spirits up. He was such a caring man.

“This is a very sad loss for the rugby fraternity and for our

Sir Bryan Williams coached Mika at Manu Samoa before he played for the All Blacks and has worked alongside him as patron of the New Zealand Barbarians club.

“He was very highly regarded. He was doing some great

work certainly for the club but particularly in the secondary school area. Dylan’s been very active in that area.

“He was just a great guy. A gentle big man who will be sadly missed for sure.”

“He was well liked. Very well regarded. He just had a way with

people.” Other friends, team mates and members of the public have taken to social media to mourn Mika’s passing.

Mika played two tests for Samoa and, after serving a threeyear stand-down period, seven for the All Blacks, including two against Italy and South Africa at the 1999 World Cup. “It is with great sadness that the family of Dylan announce that he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Auckland,” his family said in a statement published on the All Blacks website.

“Dylan was a very much loved husband to Tracy, father to their daughter Marley, and dearly loved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

“He was a hugely talented athlete, well respected in the Samoan community and abroad but just as importantly to his friends and family a warm wonderful caring man. Gone far too soon at the age of just 45.”

Dame Valerie Adams has labelled a Tongan government edict that bans girls from playing rugby in public schools as “sexist”.

The letter from Tongan Education Minister Penisimani Fifita to Tonga High School bans girls in all public schools from taking part in sports such as rugby or boxing because it goes against Tongan culture and traditions.

Fifita claims these sports damage the sacredness of femininity and Tongan cultural values.

Adams, whose mother is Tongan, called the decision “sexist” and says it isn’t a cultural issue.

“I grew up in the Tongan community and I’ve lived in Tonga and this is just a whole lot of crap in my opinion,” Adams said.

“If it was a culture issue, why did they even have the sevens team. Last year I was in Tonga as a sports ambassador talking to the women’s Tongan sevens team ... If this was a cultural issue, that should have been stopped a long time ago when they started the team up.

“I just think it’s wrong on every level. Why would you wanna kill someone’s dreams of doing something good for their country.

“The women should have equal rights as men to do whatever they want [and] how they want especially when it comes to sport.

We’re not just made for the kitchen, we’re not just made for cleaning up after husbands and dads and stuff.”

Chair of the Tongan Advisory Council Melino Maka described the decision as “ridiculous” and said it undermined the progress made by women in society.

“It is a backwards step. The way the letter was constructed undermined the intelligence of women,” Maka told Kate Hawkesby.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought someone was giving me a practical joke.

“We are in 2018 and some of the movements that promote women and Me Too, I think it undermines all of that progress. I never thought they would bring in this ridiculous policy and direction.”

The letter – which was posted on the So Tongan Facebook page – has caused significant backlash, with many echoing Adams and Maka’s comments on social media.

Kiwi Ferns head coach Tony Benson says around five of his players are of Tongan descent and sport has been life changing for them.

“What I do know of the girls that are playing here is that they get a lot out of it for their lives and enhancing their lives,” Benson told Newstalk ZB. Benson says the ban will mean players from the Tongan area would be less developed and less likely to get involved in rugby later in life.

“I’ve witnessed what it means for young ladies to play the game and play it at a high level and it really does change their lives and gives them a really good start in life. To see somebody miss that would be pretty sad.”

Only two changes to side New Zealand have gone on the front foot ahead of today’s daynight test against England, naming their XI ahead of their opponents.

It implies confidence rather than diffidence in the challenge that lies ahead and belief in the players.

Legspinning allrounder Todd Astle is in for his third test over the last six years, and will bat No 8. Wicketkeeper BJ Watling will bat No 6. They are the only changes from the last test team which beat the West Indies in Hamilton in December. They replace the injured Mitchell Santner and Tom Blundell respectively.

“In recent days there have been a number of occasions we’ve been able to get out and practice with the pink ball,” captain Kane Williamson said. “Yesterday we were training in the evening. It is slightly unique, but an exciting opportunity and a great occasion.”

New Zealand’s first home pink ball test will be their second overall, and the ninth day-night test since the trans-Tasman match which kicked off the concept in

England captain Joe Root during the recent Ashes series.

Williamson isn’t about to get caught up in all the hype around the match and forget the threat the English pose.

“There is probably a danger of overcomplicating some fo the finer parts of the pink ball game.

“They have shown different characteristics within those (eight) tests and at different stages with different conditions of the ball. It’s hard to look into too much but you do want to adapt

and think on your feet.”

Williamson is delighted senior batsman Ross Taylor will be in the dressing room today. He provides a reassuring presence.

He has passed fit for the test, now over the quad injury which has troubled him for the last fortnight, although battling a spot of illness.

“Ross has been playing beautifully well every time he’s walked to the crease. Just the calmness, the confidence and its reflected

in how much success he’s had this year, but probably every other year as well. He’s batting amazingly well, he’s a great guy to have in the group and is excited with his body intact to play tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, cricket great Geoffrey Boycott has called for England to drop the sledging during the test series in New Zealand.

Sledging and the abuse of opponents has been a big issue in the sport in recent weeks follow ugly scenes in the current series between Australia and South Africa.

Australian opener David Warner went as far as confronting South Africa’s Quinton de Kock in a stairwell after a day’s play in reaction to a sledge on the field.

Boycott said the on-field abuse is getting so bad that players are nearly coming to blows, which is not a good look for the sport.

“It is time Joe Root, as captain, stamped his authority on the team and that should start by our England cricketers cutting out sledging. Sledging is crude and ugly and sets a bad example to youngsters,” writes Boycott for the Telegraph.

Ban lifted, Rabada free to play in tests South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada had his two-test ban overturned on appeal yesterday, meaning the world’s No. 1 bowler will be available for the remainder of the series against Australia.

Rabada was banned by the International Cricket Council for the third and fourth tests after being found guilty of two charges of misconduct for inappropriate wicket celebrations in South Africa’s series-levelling victory in the second test in Port Elizabeth.

The first charge, of deliberately bumping into Australia captain Steve Smith after getting him out in the first innings in Port Elizabeth, earned Rabada three disciplinary demerit points, took him over a threshold, and resulted in a two-test ban.

The 22-year-old Rabada and Cricket South Africa appealed that finding by arguing that he didn’t deliberately bump into Smith. The appeal was upheld after an independent judicial hearing in Cape Town.

“The key issue is whether Mr Rabada made ‘inappropriate and deliberate physical contact’ with Mr. Smith,” said Kiwi judicial officer Mike Heron, who heard the appeal. “I am not ‘comfortably satisfied’ that Mr Rabada intended to make contact and I therefore find him not guilty.”

It was a rare case of a successful appeal against an ICC ruling, and the first time South Africa has succeeded with a legal challenge against cricket’s governing body.

Cricket South Africa said it welcomed the decision.

Inquiry widens The NRL is investigating allegations a match official was also the victim of a homophobic slur as part of its inquiry into the racial abuse levelled at Greg Inglis at Penrith on Saturday. Inglis spoke for the first time about the matter yesterday, labelling any racism in society as “appalling” as the NRL continues to try and hunt down the offender.

It can also be revealed the NRL’s investigation has extended into looking at alleged homophobic remarks directed at match officials after the game. “The integrity unit has already begun looking at those allegations as part of the current investigation,” a spokesman said.

James McLeod will again be at the helm of the Methven rugby side who begin their Combined Rugby Competition season tonight against Darfield.

The official start date of this year’s Combined Rugby Competition might not be until Saturday, but those hanging out for a bit of club rugby action will be treated to an entrée tonight when Methven and Darfield do battle under lights in Darfield.

The match has been shifted to tonight to allow for a wedding which would impact on the Darfield side if they were to play Saturday afternoon, so Methven

accepted an early foray into the competition.

There will be plenty of eyes on the Methven side to see how well they’ve progressed after a couple of seasons where they sat in a transitional holding period following their win in the competition.

Coach Andy Pearce believes that his side will surprise more than a few too.

“We’ve got a really good squad this year, it’s exciting,” he said.

“There’s been some very good

recruitment work done and we’ve picked up some new players.

“I think we made a lot of progress last season and some of our guys really stepped up and grew as the season progressed and this season they should be able to carry that through.”

Two pre-season games in the past two weeks against Linwood and Prebbleton gave Pearce all he needed to know that his men were ready for the competition opener, but the challenge in

front of them isn’t lost on him either.

“Darfield are tough, really tough. They’ve consistently been in the top half of the teams for the past few years and we are expecting things to be no different.

“It should be a great game, but it will definitely also be a physical one.”

James McLeod will captain the Methven side again with Tyler Blackburn, who made huge strides last season through club rugby and then as a part of the

Lochore Cup winning Mid Canterbury side, will be his deputy.

The experienced shoulders of those two, plus the likes of Davey Maw, will be key parts of the side’s chances this season but Pearce thinks the mix is just right.

“Our strength this year will be our squad and our depth I think, things are looking really good there.”
