If you haven’t put it in the mail, it’s nearly too late. Voting in the second flag referendum officially closes at 7pm on Thursday, March 24, and along with the rest of the country, Ashburtonians had until yesterday to post their papers to ensure they were counted in the preliminary results. Yesterday was also the last day replacement voting papers could be issued. Preliminary results are set to be released at 8.30pm on Thursday and will detail total votes for each option, informal and invalid votes and results by electorate. known can post their votes by close of business on Thursday, March 24, to ensure they are received in time for the official count, next week. referendum more than 1.1 million votes had been received and the Electoral Commission confirmed that as of yesterday that number had jumped to 1,784,000. The latest UMR research poll showed that the majority of Kiwis want to keep the current flag with 59 per cent voting to retain it and 32 per cent voting in favour of change. Nine per cent said they were unsure. The poll also shows that younger New Zealanders were the keenest to retain the flag and, as was to be expected, political polarisation was very evident. A narrow majority of National voters intended to vote for change and a large contingent of other voters were also voting for retention.
