Day of student unity in the pool

When you’re in a warm pool and there’s a ball to toss around, it doesn’t matter whether you’re able-bodied or not, whether your’e an academic star or finding learning difficult; in the water you’re equals.

And just how much of a leveller water can be was demonstrated on Thursday at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre when students of all ages and abilities played a freestyle form of volleyball.

There were no teams, no winners, the game was a perfect example of students working together.

In an initiative driven by Ashburton College’s student executive and led by sports committee chairwoman, Emily Armstrong, students from the college’s Student Learning Support Unit (SLSU) and senior students and executive members donned their togs and took to the water.

The pool session was a way of uniting students from different parts of the school, Armstrong said.

“It’s about uniting everyone, making everyone feel included.

Uniting everyone and making them feel part of the school, part of the community, is our goal,” she said.

A similar pool day was held two years ago and Armstrong said when she suggested it to the executive there was a real enthusiasm to repeat the event.

It was part of the college’s philosophy that every student should feel included and activities such as this were one way of living up to that, Armstrong said.

Cheryl Harding, teacher in charge of the SLSU, said the pool day was a great way for her students to feel part of the activities that most took for granted.

“No-one treats anyone as any different in the pool, there’s great camaraderie,” she said Some of her students involved in the activity were not able to swim, but they were paired with a senior student and once they were in the water with float aids, it was amazing how quickly they relaxed and enjoyed themselves, she said.

“That they’re able to do this is all down to these students (executive) and when they’re in the water, they just become part of a big group of students having fun.”

The SLSU is the school base for 17 students from Year 9 to 13.

About 14 of those took part in yesterday’s pool day.

Feathered beauties primped, primed and aiming to win

When it comes to beauty contests you can’t beat one of the feathered kind – for looks or noise.

Yesterday it was impossible to hear in the Ashburton Sports Hall with hundreds of ducks, geese, hens, roosters, game birds and small birds lined up on show benches.

They were not only trying to outdo one another in the beauty stakes, but also in the volume of hisses, honks, quacks, clucks and ear-splitting crowing.

Those birds are entrants in the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society South Island show and while to the uninitiated showing birds might appear to involve little more than grabbing a few from the yard and putting them in a cage, the reality is very different.

Ask Ashburton’s bird man and star of the movie Pecking Order, Brian Glassey, or ask any of the judges casting critical eyes over the birds and they’ll tell you that growing and then showing top poultry is time-consuming. The skill’s in the breeding, the feeding and in knowing which ones are the perfect specimen and which are also rans.

Glassey started his run up to the show weeks ago when he eyed up the poultry likely to make the cut.

washed, given a few swishes with the hair drier and had any stray feathers discreetly removed before they hit the show bench.

hands and eyes over each before making decisions that would reward some, disappoint others.

with the birds tolerating the indignity of being tipped upside down while she checked their shape and condition and their size and colour against breed standards.

“When you’re judging you never get the perfect bird but you’re always looking for that perfect bird; finding it is rare,” she said.

Spicer might not often find the perfect bird, but she had plenty of compliments for everyone who entered birds in shows.

“All the breeders put so much time and effort into their birds, they need to be commended. People love their birds and as a judge, you need to respect that.”

Like all judges she gets the odd peck as she handles show poultry but said most birds are pretty easy going and well used to being handled.

She did double duty at the show, judging one section and showing her first love, geese. She’s a breeder of rare varieties and owns Goosehill Stud.

The poultry show is open to the public today from 10am.

Farmers urged to air bovis concerns Ashburton District farmers are being encouraged to share their experiences and concerns about mycoplasma bovis disease and the eradication programme so that more can be done to advocate and address issues.

The Ashburton Regional Advisory Group, chaired by Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel, met yesterday to discuss what is being done in the district to support farmers affected by the disease.

The group is calling on farmers to continue sharing their experiences with them.

The group was joined by guests from the Farmers Assistance

Programme and representatives from financial institutions, who were invited to speak at the meeting.

“We are actively seeking insight from a range of different groups and industry bodies to gather a whole-of-district understanding of the implications of what is happening in our community and what can be done better,” Favel said.

“The feeling out there is that some farmers have a lack of confidence in what is happening and we want to help address those concerns by learning about their experiences and exploring what

we can do to help. That is the purpose of this group.”

Acting regional manager for Ministry for Primary Industries’ eradication programme Sharon Ritchie said having the advisory group meant MPI heard farmers’ concerns at a local level.

“This information enables us to more effectively target our resources.

“Bringing people together also means we can collaborate and develop fresh approaches. For example, some local experienced farmers who went through the M. bovis process have created a group of mentors to help farmers

Representatives from the district’s financial institutions told the group yesterday that farmers should make sure they are as prepared as possible for culled stock reimbursements by keeping accurate, up-to-date herd records.

“Completing your records and having verifiable evidence on hand can make a big difference in the settlement claim process, so it’s imperative these records are kept,” Favel said.

The latest report from the field shows that of 25 confirmed properties for M. bovis in Ashburton,

20 are cleared and five are active.

The number of properties under a Notice of Direction stands at 20, while a further 67 notices have been revoked. Eighty properties are under Active Surveillance.

The Ashburton Regional Advisory Group was set up in April to support members of Ashburton’s rural community affected by mycoplasma bovis.

It includes representatives from the Ashburton District Council, Ministry for Primary Industries, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Federated Farmers, Rural Support Trust and Ashburton Hospital.

Road safety education day creates big impact

A focus on keeping themselves and their friends safe was a big focus for Year 12 Ashburton College students at their annual road safety education day on Friday.

It was the second year the students have been through the RYDA course (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness), which is run by Road Safety Eduction.

The course takes the students through six different sections, including talks and lessons from police and crash survivors.

Programme co-ordinator Naomh Casin said the course takes an evidence-based approach to educating the students about how to be safe on the roads.

“The idea is to show them and to get them thinking ‘these are my life choices’,” she said.

“It is also about teaching them to be good passengers and being confident to speak up when they do not feel safe.”

The students went through the six stations, which are 30 minutes long, covering off a variety of topics.

“We get the police in to talk about the protective role that they have,” she said. “We also have a crash survivor that will come and talk to the students.”

Nationally there may have been a slump in visitor numbers from China, but Experience Mid Canterbury manager Bruce Moffat said he hosted a group of Chinese travel agents recently, who

The rates are an average 10.5 per cent up on last year and will fund freshwater, biodiversity and transport work.

come away with a strategy to keep themselves and their friends safe,” she said.

Chinese visitors give Mid Canterbury big tick

large busloads of tourists to more free and independent travellers and they often wanted to get to more off-the-beaten track destinations, Moffat said.

There was a second win with Chinese visitors with a group that visited recently from Hangzhou’s West Lake District returning in early August because they were so impressed with what the district had to offer.

The Ashburton District Council is hailing its new text message alert service a success, with more than 1337 subscribers coming on board in its first two weeks. Once a resident registers by texting their postal code to 4196 they will receive an alert if there are councilrelated issues in their area such as a road closure or a boil water notice.

McMillan doing her bit and some orry for Mid Canty

If you want something done ask a busy person and Liz McMillan is certainly that.

Over the past seven days the Ashburton District councillor has been involved with National Volunteer Week, Elder Abuse Awareness Week and is participating in the Act for Peace Ration Challenge to raise money and awareness for communities threatened by conflict and disaster.

“I saw a perfect way to combine the We Dare You to Volunteer initiative set down to Ashburton District councillors by Volunteer Mid South Canterbury co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan and the Bake my Day initiative driven by Anna Arrowsmith of Safer Families in Ashburton as part of Elder Abuse Awareness Week,” McMillan said.

“Originally, I was planning to be the drop-off point for baking going to elderly in Ashburton, however, it was suggested that delivering baking to the elderly in Methven was a better idea.

“I changed the collection point to the Methven Museum meeting room and offered a cuppa and a chat for anyone who wanted to call in.”

Over 50 elderly residents received goods and baking as a part of the initiative.

Participating in the Act for Peace Ration Challenge at the same time meant Liz could not eat any of the baking she was surrounded by.

The challenge is about living on

refugee rations for a week, to raise money and awareness for communities threatened by conflict and disaster.

“Since Ashburton was named as a refugee settlement location, there has been a lot of talk around refugees, so I wanted to put myself in their shoes.

“My ration pack contains the same foods and quantities that Act for Peace gives out to Syrian Refugees in Jordan.”

As a part of the challenge, McMillan is only allowed to eat 420g of rice, 170g of lentils, 85g of dried chickpeas, 125g of tinned sardines, 400g of tinned kidney beans and 250ml of vegetable oil over the course of the week.

Other rations, such as milk powder, teabags, salt and sugar, can be added by reaching fundraising targets.

To date McMillan has raised over $500 so she could add 170g

of a vegetable to her diet. “The hardest part of the challenge hasn’t been dealing with cooking meals for my children that I can’t eat or the smelling the baking I have been delivering, but rather keeping myself hydrated.

“Sardine juice and water is a lot different to the numerous cups of tea and homemade soup I am accustomed to. I am also a bit concerned about running out of food toward the end of the week.”

Participating in the challenge has made McMillan realise how much food we waste.

“Now every grain of rice is really important to me, I can’t afford to let any get washed down the sink.

“I also have a greater appreciation of how lucky we are – my children can attend school, I live in a warm house with walls and an inside bathroom and I have a car to drive.”

When the week is up, McMillan is looking forward to Marmite on toast for breakfast and snacking on salt and vinegar chips.

Teen rescues stranger NZME Jack Hodgson was just waiting for his bus to school, now he’s one of the teenagers who rescued a woman from a freezing Christchurch lake.

The woman came into strife after her car, with two dogs also inside, crashed into the water yesterday after one dog stepped on the accelerator.

Hodgson, 15, said the bus was nearly at his stop when he heard a woman screaming for help at the top of her voice.

“I could see the car in the water and I didn’t realise at first, but two dogs were in the front of the car. The woman was behind the car trying to hold it up,” he said.

“When I saw the car flip over her I got some adrenaline and jumped in after her.

“I was just like ‘oh crap’, no one else wanted to jump in and I thought if no one else is going to do it then I should.”

Swimming in the water became incredibly difficult due to his clothing and the temperature of the water, Hodgson said, and another teen came to his

aid. Joseph, from St Thomas of Canterbury College, ventured into the water after him and brought him back to shore before rescuing the woman.

Her two dogs did not survive.

“I tried to go for the dog and the lady but I knew as soon as I got in the water I was only going to get the lady,” Hodgson said.

“The dogs, I feel bad for them, just how it happened. They should just put a fence there.

That wouldn’t have happened if a fence was there.”

Hillmorton High School acting principal Jo Hunnikin said they were incredibly proud of student Jack Hodgson, who was one of the two boys involved, and his actions.

“We are really big on citizenship and social action,” she said, “I don’t think it comes any more clear cut than that.”

A firefighter on the scene described the boys’ efforts as “sterling”.

It appears after the rescue the second boy to arrive at the scene simply picked up his bag and headed to school, as if his heroics were an everyday occurrence.

Shooting victim set to return home NZME A 5-year-old girl and her father who were shot in the March 15 mosque terror attacks, say they are “finally” returning home to Christchurch after four months of hospital and rehab in Auckland.

The father was shot three times in the Al Noor mosque shootings, and his daughter, who was also shot, spent weeks in intensive care at Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital.

The father made the announcement today in a video message on his Facebook page, saying the pair would be back home in Christchurch “hopefully on Saturday the 29th of June”.

“Hi my friends, my family, and everyone.

I’m very sorry I wasn’t able to inform you and update you about our health issues at the moment and how things are progressing very well,” the father says.

“I’m doing well and also my beautiful angel is doing well. She’s doing very good at

the moment, she’s getting so much better.

Finally we are coming back to Christchurch.

Both the father and daughter, who was 4 years old at the time of the attacks, cannot be named due to legal reasons.

At the end of the video message, which has been viewed more than 5000 times, the father pans to show his daughter sitting next to him, and asks her: “What do you say?”

Smiling, the girl says “see you soon”.

Alongside the video message, the father posted a short written message.

“It’s going to take a long time for rehab but at least we are home I would like to thank everyone who have been helping us with anyways and also for who is still helping us,” he wrote.

Following the shooting, the girl, who was shot several times, was in a coma – which she only came out of in late April.

On April 23, it was announced that the girl was conscious and was speaking again in English and Arabic.

These readings help us to read verses of the Bible we might otherwise not choose to read or read less often.

Recently, some of these readings have focused on God’s active creation of the world we live in, the natural environment, the resources we benefit from and the mandate we have as Christians, to care for all creation.

Many of us try to care for creation in whichever way we can, being careful to not cause undue damage, not to be reckless or wasteful and to make life and the world a good place to live in, available for everyone to appreciate.

To support those groups and individuals who campaign for clean waterways, conservation of bushland and wetlands, and the wise use of fisheries and protected areas our oceans.

I have tried to be a caring Christian in many ways, in order to care for all that God created, including all people as well as ecology and the environment.

I try to re-cycle everything I can, as best as possible, given the guidelines from the District Council on what, where and how to recycle. I also try to re-use as best as I can, by putting food scraps through a process that enables them being composted and dug into our vege garden. I

also have a hobby, where I take pre-loved items and re-make them into something that can be of use to someone again.

However, the one area that causes me concern is the use of carbon fuels, as I drive a car that uses petrol. I would dearly love to own an electric car, but at the price of those in today’s market, that is a dream option.

Maybe one day I will buy a second-hand hybrid car, which is at least a nod to my desire to care for creation as a consumer, with a vehicle that is environmentally friendly.

There maybe some ways in which I have not been overly careful of God’s creation, but I seriously hope I have not been harmful.

Which is why I suggest that we be more careful of others – whom we may not have been very careful of. We may have said hurtful words, disregarded their opinion or not spent the time with them, making them feel loved, cared for and valued.

In sharing God’s love with all the people we share our lives with, hopefully we will show that we care for God’s creation in every way we can.

Iran attack ‘big mistake’ AP A US official said the military made preparations for limited strikes on Iran in retaliation for the downing of a US surveillance drone, but approval was abruptly withdrawn before the attacks were launched.

The official, who was not authorised to discuss the operation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the targets would have included radars and missile batteries.

The New York Times reported that President Donald Trump had approved the strikes, but then called them off. The newspaper cited anonymous senior administration officials.

The White House declined requests for information about whether Trump changed his mind.

According to the official, the strikes were recommended by the Pentagon and were among the options presented to senior administration officials.

It was unclear how far the preparations had gone, but no shots were fired or missiles launched.

The military operation was called off after Trump had spent most of the day discussing Iran strategy with top national security advisers and congressional leaders.

Asked earlier in the day about a US response to the attack, he said, “You’ll soon find out.”

Trump declared that “Iran made a very big mistake” by shooting down the US drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

But he also suggested that shooting down the drone was a foolish error rather than an intentional escalation of the tensions that have led to rising

fears of open military conflict.

“I find it hard to believe it was intentional, if you want to know the truth,” Trump said at the White House. “I think that it could have been somebody who was loose and stupid that did it.”

On Capitol Hill, leaders urged caution to avoid escalation, and some lawmakers insisted the White House must consult with Congress before taking any actions.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton have advocated hardline policies against Iran, but Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House intelligence committee, said “the president certainly was listening” when congressional leaders at the meeting urged him to be cautious and not escalate the already tense situation.

losi said no specific options for a US response were presented at the more than hourlong meeting. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, “The administration is engaged in what I would call measured responses.” And later, House Republicans on the Foreign Affairs, intelligence and Armed Services committees issued a statement using the same word, saying, “There must be a measured response to these actions.”

The downing of the huge, unmanned aircraft, which Iran portrayed as a deliberate defense of its territory rather than a mistake, was a stark reminder of the risk of military conflict between US and Iranian forces as the Trump administration combines a “maximum pressure” campaign of economic sanctions with a buildup of American forces in the region.

Johnson, Hunt in run-off for Prime Minister AP Britain’s next prime minister will be a man in his 50s who went to Oxford University – either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt, the two finalists selected in a race to lead the governing Conservative Party.

Johnson, a flamboyant former foreign secretary and ex-mayor of London, topped a ballot of 313 Conservative lawmakers with 160 votes and is runaway favourite to become the party’s next leader.

He has led in all five voting rounds of a contest that began

last week with 10 contenders.

Hunt, Britain’s current foreign secretary, came a distant second with 77 votes and will join Johnson in a run-off decided by 160,000 party members across Britain.

Johnson tweeted that he was honoured to have gotten more than half the votes cast by party lawmakers. He said “I look forward to getting out across the UK and to set out my plan to deliver Brexit, unite our country, and create a brighter future for all of us.”

Hunt said on Twitter that he knew he was the underdog

“but in politics surprises happen”.

The winner of the run-off, due to be announced the week of July 22, will become the new Conservative leader and the country’s next prime minister, replacing Theresa May. Hunt edged out Environment Secretary Michael Gove, who got 75 votes, after Home Secretary Sajid Javid was eliminated earlier.

The result spares Johnson a showdown with Gove, his former ally-turned-archrival. The two men jointly led the “leave” campaign in Britain’s 2016 EU

membership referendum, but Gove scuttled Johnson’s subsequent bid to become prime minister by deciding to run for the job himself, in a race ultimately won by May. Hunt, who has been culture secretary and health secretary, is considered an experienced, competent minister, but unexciting.

Deadline over; protesters out AP Several hundred mainly student protesters gathered outside Hong Kong government offices yesterday, with some blocking traffic on a major thoroughfare, after a deadline passed for meeting their demands related to controversial extradition legislation that many see as eroding the territory’s judicial independence.

While the scene began peacefully, the presence again of protesters on busy Harcourt Road could prompt a renewed police action to clear them – and new potentially violent confrontations.

Protest leaders have said they are determined to keep up the pressure on the administration of territory leader Carrie Lam, potentially renewing demonstrations that have drawn hundreds of thousands into the streets in recent weeks.

“I myself am not the type to get involved in violence,” said student protester Brian Chow. “I’ll just carry on sitting here, sing some Christian hymns, show our resistance, and keep the government paralyzed until it responds to us.”

“I’m going to carry on coming out, and carry on protesting,” she said.

Ashburton tennis coach Andre van Rooyen has been humbled by the support he and his family have received following his lung cancer diagnosis just a few weeks ago.

BATTLE Ashburton tennis coach Andre van Rooyen needs to find $10,000 a month to fund a drug which will give him the best shot at a long life, following a shock cancer diagnosis just a few short weeks ago. The Guardian’s Erin Tasker reports.

H

e’s made a career out of helping others learn to play the sport he loves, but now Andre van Rooyen is the one who needs help.

Just after helping Canterbury Country claim a national tennis title at Easter, Andre discovered that a persistent cough which he first believed to be a chest infection which turned into pneumonia, ended up being stage four lung cancer.

It was a diagnosis which came as a shock to the 53-year-old Mid Canterbury Tennis coach, his wife Debbie, their two young children, Sebastian, 12, and Christine, 9, and the wider Mid Canterbury Tennis community.

A non-smoker who was fit and healthy, Andre said he’d had a cough since January and despite antibiotics, it just hadn’t gone away. He never thought for a moment, though, that the cough that had been keeping him awake at night, would turn out to be what it was.

Blindsided but determined to fight, Andre began treatment. He had one lot of chemotherapy before tests showed that he had what was called the Ros 1 mutation. It was a good thing, because it meant he was eligible for a new drug which would target his cancer, called Crizotinib. But, the bad news was that the drug was not funded, and came with a price tag of $10,000 per month.

It was a huge price tag, but straight away the family knew they’d just have to find the money, so Debbie started a Givealittle page. In the first 10 days it raised more than $20,000 and this week Andre was set to start the new drug, which was simply a pill taken daily.

When you put that into perspective, at $10,000 a month, that works out to be $333 a day for a month with 30 days. It is a costly treatment, but one that is Andre’s best shot.

through Givealittle, to those who brought food, or offers of help in the garden, it all made a difference, Andre said.

He has to be careful because his immune system is depleted and last week it let in a bug which landed him in hospital. That meant he was later starting the new drug than he’d hoped.

Andre said he’d been told that his cancer could have been growing for up to a year or two before it was detected, and it was hoped that the drug he was on would shrink it by up to 70 per cent.

Just what the future holds, no-one knows.

Andre is taking things day by day and relying on both his faith and modern medicine to help him through a challenge he never dreamed he’d face.

“Because I’m Christian, we believe in miracles, so I’m trusting that something like that can still happen, but as I say, I’m very impressed with our health system here,” Andre said.

The van Rooyens came to New Zealand from South Africa 10 years ago and moved to Ashburton from Nelson three years ago.

Ashburton has quickly become their home and Andre loved his job as the Mid Canterbury Tennis coach at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

He’s had a huge and growing number of kids on his coaching books. He loved it and his young charges love him, so giving that up following his diagnosis has been hard. But he had to do it for both himself and his young charges.

He needed to focus on his health and knew that Mid Canterbury’s young players needed to maintain their momentum.

“I’ve just got to focus on my health, and my family, and that’s where I’m at,” Andre said.

The search is on for a new Mid Canterbury Tennis coach and, in the meantime, the young schoolaged coaches Andre mentored over the past couple of years were ensuring things kept ticking over, along with the help of a couple of coaches who were travelling down each week from Christchurch.

He may not be their coach anymore, but Andre is still keeping up with the progress of Mid Canterbury’s youngsters and was proud of the young talent that was

coming through the ranks at the moment.

Andre said the timing of his diagnosis had, in a way, been ironic. He’d just finished a summer that was one of the busiest and the best in all of his years coaching, culminating in a school holiday programme the week before Easter that attracted 20 to 30 kids per day.

From there he headed to the national seniors teams event in Christchurch, where he played for the Canterbury Country team, which took the title out. He played in five or six of the eight fixtures and although he wasn’t well, it was doubles so he had a teammate to help him through, and he still played well and enjoyed it.

Because he’d been a bit under the weather, wife Debbie hadn’t been that keen on him playing in the tournament. But, in an odd sort of way, it ended up being a good thing.

It pushed his health just that little bit further, landing him in hospital, which led to the full extent of his health problems being revealed.

Andre believed that getting the help he needed when he did, saved his life.

The first thing that doctors picked up was actually fluid build-up around his heart. Andre remembered being told by a doctor that it needed to be drained now, or he could die.

“I really believe they saved my life there,” Andre said.

Once that fluid was drained, Andre thought he was out of the woods, but doctors weren’t so sure and continued doing tests.

That’s when they discovered the cancer, which Andre said, due to the heart issue too, was stage four.

“When we went to the oncologist for the first time, that was a big wake-up call, because they can’t tell you how pretty things are, if they aren’t,” Andre said.

It wasn’t Andre’s first brush with cancer.

Last year he had a skin cancer removed from his head, which was not connected to this latest diagnosis.

He was given the all clear from that one, not long before the lung cancer diagnosis, and he keeps telling his kids that he’d beaten that one and he was determined to beat this one, too.

And that is Andre. A man who always has a smile on his face and a positive outlook on life, who is doing all he can to beat this thing.

Social housing – whose responsibility?

I

t might have slipped under the community’s radar, but plans that could see a dramatic change in the way housing for the hard-up elderly is delivered in this district, need more than a passing glance.

For decades the Ashburton District Council has provided a pool of housing units that are let at below market rental to over 65s with little cash and few assets.

They’ve filled a significant gap in the district’s accommodation stocks and while they’re far from palatial, they’ve been much loved homes for many over many years.

That could all be about to change. The council is reviewing the future of those 100 plus properties. Its choices come down to bringing them up to the

required heating and insulation standards, demolish and rebuild some or do nothing and find they cannot let those properties.

All options either cost money or lose money.

There’s another option that’s also on the table – handing over the future management of the housing units to another organisation. It is unclear whether this option would mean selling off the properties or not. Either way, it’s clear a heck of a lot of money needs to be spent to bring them

up to scratch.

So, how did the council reach this point? Surely work has been carried out over the years to meet its obligations as a landlord to provide reasonable standard housing for tenants. Clearly the maintenance that has been done, however, has not been enough.

The problem can be traced back to the way maintenance has been funded. Rentals are supposed to go into a pool that covers maintenance work as and when it’s needed.

Clearly that hasn’t worked as what’s required to bring them up to scratch now far outstrips cash reserves.

Add to that changes to tenancy laws that now set minimum standards for heating, insulation and ventilation and the council

has found itself wanting.

Currently it’s crossing no legal boundaries if existing tenants remain in place. Once those tenants leave, however, the new standards apply and the choice becomes, leave them empty or spend money they do not have.

Whatever the outcome it will have a significant impact on tenants and the council will have to tread carefully as it works its way through the options, particularly given that social housing is part of the newly emphasised four wellbeings that local authorities are obliged to commit to.

The question must then be, is it a council’s responsibility to provide social housing? If so, does that apply to only the over 65s or should it also apply to the families and individuals who fall through the housing cracks?

And if the council doesn’t provide that housing, who does?

Perhaps this is the time for a district-wide look to be taken at social housing across all areas of need.

And thrown into that mix should be the council’s portfolio, the work of the new Ashburton housing trust, any private providers who’re out there and as well the options and opportunities created by the closure of Cameron Courts resthome need to come into the mix.

Low cost accommodation isn’t just needed by the over 65s, it’s needed by people of all ages from individuals struggling on minimum wages through to families who’re trying to stretch one wage many ways to older people for whom life on just their pension isn’t really life at all.

Verbal abuse – it’s not on A

fifteen-year-old snotnosed punk comes up to you in the street and calls you a retarded faggot. A policewoman is standing next to you and you turn to her and say “I find that offensive, can I press charges and have him arrested or fined?”

The policewoman says, no, not under today’s laws.

Do you think that is the New Zealand we should live in? Do you imagine that is the type of New Zealand previous generations have believed in, fought for and worked to create?

Do you think a law that allows abusive and insulting language spoken to your face, with no consequence for the person who delivered it, should be allowed to pass?

Well, right now, a private members bill is being crafted and could be drawn out for debate and possible implementation as you contemplate your belly button fluff and wonder whether you should Google the word ‘faggot’.

Who would want such a law and is there really a politician earning $197,000 a year trying to make such a law possible?

Yes – there is, most definitely, in fact his party predecessor recently called him the “conscience of parliament”.

The person who wants this is David Seymour. Now I have written before about this man and I will make no bones about it – I do not believe this person has a single New Zealander’s interests at heart. He has attempted to revive the stinking, rotten

corpse that is the Act Party back to life. He exists politically because the National Party gifted him the Epsom seat.

Read this quote from David Seymour recently, “It should never be a crime to insult or abuse someone with language because nobody should ever be punished on the basis of subjective opinion.”

Wow! – What an utterly inhumane statement that absolves the abusive speaker of any wrong-doing. David asserts that abusing and insulting people is subjective opinion.

If we were simply single celled organisms without a brain that transmits endorphins when praised, then abusive language would have no effect, but we are human.

Ask an abused spouse what it feels like to be continuously abused, ridiculed, insulted and put down. Do you think she believes it’s okay because it is only subjective opinion?

I cannot tell you the number of times I have praised or encouraged a child, or witnessed a teacher praise or encourage a child. It is possible to physically see the effects of positive language on another human being.

Praise, encouragement,

affirmation, and any form of uplifting language can lift a person’s perception of themselves and create new neurological pathways in the brain.

Imagine what the opposite would do to another human.

Now imagine what it would be like to live in a world where abusive and insulting language is passed off as someone’s opinion. But you don’t have to imagine.

I want you to take a break and Google these four words.

Will you do this, because this is about abusing a plant, not a human.

So stop reading and type in Ikea, Verbal, Abuse, Plant. Right, now pick at least two different articles and quickly browse what was done and what they discovered.

I’m not going to tell you what you will find, but I want you to remember that this was an experiment that involved two plants.

David Seymour wants to make it alright to abuse and insult people. He is one of the rightwing politicians who have started promoting this theory of fear that there is a left-wing agenda to regulate your freedom.

This is exactly the type of dogma iterated by extreme right-wing thinking individuals.

David Seymour is beginning to promote dangerous ideology disguised as protecting your personal freedoms.

The biggest issue I have with what David has said, is the lack of reaction. If people do not react to his statements, if apathy

becomes the default response, then this becomes a case of boiling the frog while it is alive.

We will only want to get out of the pot when it gets too hot, by then it will be too late.

I would urge you all to send the message to such a marginalised, disillusioned man, hate speech is not acceptable, not now or ever.

This is a man who sucks on the public tax teat.

His salary and benefits as party leader would cover more than a quarter of my entire school’s operating annual budget – including teacher salaries. His base salary would employ three experienced teachers for a year that would have a positive impact on seventy-five children in our schools.

His party currently has 0.5 per cent support. A statistician will tell you that there is a margin of error of plus/minus 3 per cent with any statistic you read. So he exists within the margin of error.

Your tax will pay 20 per cent of his salary ($39,400) a year into a super fund for him, and he wants to leave the legacy that hate speech is merely subjective opinion.

I tell you now, there is a dangerously flawed agenda creeping insidiously into our democracy, and it needs to be eradicated.

You may have read in the Press a story of a women’s team In Mali who were beaten by Riwanda when they could only muster 6 runs.

I think I can tell you a tale (True) which puts this effort of Mali women in the shade.

I served two years in Fiji in 1949-51, and played senior cricket for the Imperial Colts team.

The standard of cricket in those days was very good in Fiji, which is evidenced by the performance of a representative team which visited NZ in, I think, 1952 or 1953.

The reason for the high standard they had achieved could be put down to the coaching they received from an Englishman who worked in the High Commissioner’s office.

Phillip Snow had played for one of the Counties sides, and was a very good coach.

However, my story relates to a game we played against the Fiji Police.

The final game against the Police would find the winner of the competition. The game, over two days, reached a stage where we had the police all out in the second innings, and we required to make 120 runs in about four hours.

Three-quarters of an hour later, we were all out for three. Yes THREE. We scored two runs and one bye. I contributed to this score by missing a shot, and the wicketkeeper was so amazed it missed the stumps, that he missed it also, and we ran a bye.

Their leading bowler, Viliame, took nine wickets for one

run! What a performance!

Of course, I can make an excuse for this performance. You will know, that in these tropical countries, when a storm is brewing, the cloud comes down, almost so low you feel you could reach up and touch it, and the atmosphere is so saturated you could almost cut it with a knife.

We should, of course, have appealed against the dark. It is their custom to so appeal, rather than against the light.

Viliame was in his element, and was absolutely unplayable. However, we could not appeal the conditions, as it would not have been ‘cricket’, and so we lost out on collecting the championship shield.

Viliame visited NZ with the team in 52-53, but had to return home. The hot, dry conditions here caused the thick skin on

the soles of his feet to crack and bleed.

Sadly we never found out how he would have performed against the NZers.

The other Fijian cricketer in that team who I vividly remember was Ilikena Bula.

He was a batsman of no mean ability.

When playing against NZ at Carisbrook, he hit a six which cleared the roof of the Rose Pavilion. A terrific shot.

The Fiji team were beaten by NZ, mainly due to the guile of one of NZ’s greatest spinners, Alex Moir, but overall did very well here in NZ. We never seem to hear about cricket in Fiji these days, but they don’t do too badly at rugby do they !

ANZ fiasco a wake-up call NZME ANZ’s parting of the ways with former chief executive David Hisco over an expenses dispute should serve as a wake-up call for employers and employees, say experts in the field.

ANZ announced on Monday that Hisco would be departing his $3 million plus a year job immediately after an investigation which alleged he “mis-characterised” certain personal expenses as business expenses.

Those expenses, which ran into the “tens of thousands of dollars” over Hisco’s nine-year stint as chief executive, included personal use of chauffeur-driven cars and storage of wine in Australia – his country of birth.

Danny Gelb, an employment law advocate, said: “I think this is a wake-up for employers to make sure they have the right policies in place. And for employees to make sure they are clear on those policies.”

“David is adamant he had authority for the expenditure undertaken, if he did have that authority is it oral in nature. It is difficult to establish one way or the other.”

Gelb said oral agreements were difficult.

“It is always dangerous to operate with a verbal agreement.”

While they were binding that was only the case if they could be backed up which required written

documentation, he said.

Gelb said for most employees the rules on expenses were fairly clear.

“When you get to the likes of executives it has got to pass the sniff test. Before you commit the company to any expenses is there some written document that can be referred to?”

He said at the heart of any conflict was whether the expenses were for the benefit of the individual or the company.

Max Whitehead, a human relations consultation, said he had already received a call from one client wanting to go over its policies in the wake of the Hisco fiasco and he believed others would be doing the same.

“From both an employer and employee perspective you want it to be very prescriptive in terms of the parameters that can be utilised.”

The challenge was the higher up the organisation a person was the higher the level of trust, which had to be the case because they had access to company finances, he said.

“The CEO should know better and show by example.”

The lower down the chain the more prescriptive it got although some organisations gave certain staff like sales representatives more freedom.

“If they have got someone going off to China they will say make sure you wine and dine the potential customers.”

Whitehead said what had changed in recent years was the level of monitoring companies now had regarding staff.

“In the past it was a lot of trust and done on a handshake. What is more sophisticated now is the monitoring.”

He said employers could track vehicle use, phone use and even the location of their employees much more easily now.

John McGill, chief executive of Strategic Pay, said the biggest change over the last 10 years was transparency.

“The general nature and scope of executive remuneration hasn’t changed.”

“But there is a lot more transparency expected particularly from listed companies and big corporates.”

Last year the NZX introduced a code of conduct for listed companies, catching up with Australia and other countries, which had already moved on this, McGill said.

“I think it is up to the organisation to get policies right and explain them.”

McGill said it was a reminder for companies to look at the transparency rules in New Zealand.

“This is a clear example of publicity you don’t want.”

A2 Milk welcomes crackdown on counterfeit products

A2 Milk said it welcomed moves from China aimed at cracking down on counterfeit products trading on e-commerce platforms.

An announcement from China’s State Administration of Market Regulation and other ministries and bureaus late yesterday outlined measures to ensure successful implementation of new e-commerce legislation, which came into force in April.

A2, which is responsible for over 5 per cent of the Chinese infant formula market, said it revealed an intention to increase the focus on supervision and enforcement of the e-commerce legislation.

In the process, China would standardise e-commerce business practices, enhance the integrity of the digital market trading environment – includ-

ing advertising and marketing – and maintaining market order.

The announcement sets out China’s intention to ensure that no counterfeit product is sold via all e-commerce platforms, including social e-commerce and cross-border e-commerce channels.

“We welcome measures that protect the rights and safety of consumers and the overall integrity of e-commerce channels and will continue to work closely with our partners through this process,” a2 Milk said in a notice to the NZX. Oyvinn Rimer, senior research analyst at Harbour Asset Management, said the announcement builds on last year’s commerce law and kicks off with a multi-agency research programme to identify illegal activities on e-commerce platforms.

“No specific details but there is broad based e-commerce

scope – with no reference to single products like infant milk,” he said in a note.

China’s announcement contained “very tough” language about the severe penalties involved, he said.

“Personally, it reads well for a2 Milk being a compliant and registered brand with legitimate distribution,” Rimer said in a note.

Shares in a2 Milk were trading down 34c or 2.4 per cent at $13.96 in late afternoon trade yesterday.

One fund manager said it appeared that a2 Milk had been caught up with the trend on the ASX – where a2 Milk is also listed – of profit-taking among the so called “growth” stocks.

He said weakness in the share price did not appear to be connected to the announcement Harbour Asset has a stake in a2 Milk.

500g Waitoa free-range chicken breast 500g medium waxy potatoes 1T oil 1 onion 3T Thai green curry paste 400g tin coconut milk 100g green beans 1T fish sauce 1T brown sugar 1t cornflour 1 lime, juice and zest 1/2 t chilli flakes Large handful of fresh herbs – coriander, thai basil/basil Chopped peanuts or cashews Water (to suit)

7 9 4 6 over medium heat and cook the onion for about a minute. Add the curry paste and saute for 2 minutes to release the aromas.

■■ Pour in the coconut milk and some water and let it come to a simmer for a further 5 minutes.

■■ Stir in the fish sauce and sugar, then add the chicken. Turn down the heat slightly, cover and simmer for about 8 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

■■ Add the potatoes, green beans,

lime zest and juice and finally mix the cornflour with 1 tbsp of the sauce from the dish then stir.

Simmer for a final 5-8 minutes till thickened slightly and heated through.

■■ Garnish with freshly chopped coriander or basil, chilli flakes and peanuts/cashews if using.

College the giant-killers

When the final whistle blew on their latest win in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition on Thursday night, you’d have thought the College A netball girls had won the final.

They hadn’t, but they had done something that no other team had been able to do since 2017 – beat Celtic A. And it wasn’t just a win, it was a big win, with the final margin being 11 goals – 40-29.

College A coach Kaye Kennedy, like her players, was over the moon with the result. She said her side was composed and stuck to their structures.

“And we had really good accurate shooting again.

“All of my girls are shooting at over 80 per cent a game, and you can’t ask for much better than that,” Kennedy said.

When the two sides met in round one the game finished in a draw.

College A led for most of it, only

for the class Celtic side to come back and square things up right on full-time, and that was on the minds of the young College players on Thursday night.

But this time when Celtic came roaring back, they were ready.

After that round one draw, College A went through a bit of a lull and lost to the newly promoted United A early in round two, but in the past couple of weeks they’d finally rediscovered their mojo.

In Christchurch on Wednesday night, in the Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition they pushed competition leaders Christchurch Girls’ High School to the limit, just going down 37-32, and then brought that form back to the local competition.

Celtic A coach Ange Leadley said College A were outstanding and deserved the win.

“You can definitely tell that they have had lots of time on court, their shooters didn’t miss a beat,” Leadley said.

She said her side simply didn’t

connect after a week where they’d been hit hard by sickness and injury.

“The difference was they were well connected and their transition was outstanding, and we were too slow to react,” Leadley said.

It may have been their first loss since 2017, and although Leadley said the fact they hadn’t been beaten for so long hadn’t really been on their minds, the loss had put a slight dent in their pride.

It also meant that the Mid Canterbury premier netball competition had just one unbeaten team remaining, and that was the team that Celtic A were due to line up against next, United A. This time last year United A were in a vastly different position to where they were now.

They were at the bottom of the premier one heap and found themselves in the position of having to fight it out in the promotion/relegation game that followed round two, and they lost it, meaning they finished last season

and started this season down in premier two.

They were determined to get back up, and they did, going through round one unbeaten in premier two to earn promotion, and then continuing that run when they got back into premier one for round two.

They were now the surprise package at the top of the premier one leaderboard with just one match remaining in round two, adding to their unbeaten run with a 27-21 win over Methven A on Thursday night. Methven A started the game strongly, with the unexpected threat of the relegation game hanging over the heads of last year’s premier one runners-up, but United A slowly moved away to take the win. It means Methven A now needs to beat Hampstead A in next week’s final round of round two to stand any chance of avoiding the relegation game.

Hampstead A were the team just one point ahead of Methven A on the points table heading into Thursday night’s games, but they

picked up a 32-20 win over Mt Somers to give themselves a bit of breathing space.

That meant that the dreaded bottom spot on the table at the end of round two would now be occupied by either Methven A or Mt Somers.

A win to either side and a loss by the other next week would see the winning team safe, but if both won or lost it’d be Methven A having to play for the right to stay in the top flight.

Southern A were still shaping up as the team that would be playing for promotion, continuing to lead the way in the premier two competition with a 49-18 win over Methven B on Thursday night.

Ashburton College B had been looking like their toughest opposition, but they lost to the team relegated from premier one at the end of round one – Celtic B – on Thursday night, 30-23, while the battle between Hampstead B and Hampstead C went the way of the Bs 36-22.

Celtic don’t want to be ‘that team’

One thing will be for certain when Celtic host Hampstead in round three of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup competition today, and that’s the fact there’ll be no shortage of passion and drive on both sides.

There’s so much riding on the game for both clubs.

For Celtic to go from winning the Watters Cup last season for the first time in more than a decade, to losing to Hampstead – a team that hasn’t even won a Watters Cup round robin game in a decade – would be a big blow for the proud Celtic club.

And for those exact same reasons, but on the other side of the coin, Hampstead will run out onto the field today a team full of determination and desire to finally break their Watters Cup curse.

Just like the other three Mid Canterbury teams in the competition, Celtic know all to well that Hampstead are the big improvers locally from the past couple of seasons, but none of them want to be that team that loses to them.

“Everyone will rise for Hampstead, but Hampstead will rise as well,” Celtic coach Shane Enright said.

Celtic lost a lot of players from their Watters Cup-winning squad from 2018, and while they’ve struggled with depth at times in the combined competition, they’ve also managed to pull a couple of top performances out of the hat.

Today they’ll need both a top performance, and for some of their less experienced players to step up, with Angus Lindsay away for the weekend and Shepherd Mhembere having been under an injury cloud all week after hurting his ribs in Celtic’s loss to Rakaia last weekend.

Rakaia will be hoping to see a lot more of this – Seta Koroitamana on the charge – when they face Southern at Mayfield today.

Hampstead on the other hand should be fresh after a week off with the bye following their loss to Rakaia in round one.

Rakaia’s wins over both Hampstead and Celtic mean that they are one of just two teams with wins on the board after two games, with the other being Methven.

And while that’s good for them, it also means that today Rakaia find themselves up against a daunting challenge in the form of a wounded Southern side.

Mid Canterbury’s top team

in the combined competition, Southern made the final and drew it with Glenmark-Cheviot before having the first week of the Watters Cup off with the bye.

They returned to the fray last weekend and went down in a last-minute thriller to Methven, something Rakaia certainly won’t be thanking Methven for.

Rakaia coach Terry Murray said it’s clear Southern and Methven – the team with the bye today – are shaping up to be the teams to beat this season.

“Southern this week, they are

a very good side. They have been consistent all year and that’s set them apart, and they have set the benchmark for us really,” Murray said.

The loss to Methven was a hard pill to swallow for Southern coach Andrew Carr, but it’s something he and his players need to put behind them and move on from.

Southern dominated the first half against Methven, but with the Max Gilbert Challenge trophy to defend after taking it off Celtic the week before, Methven

came out strongly in the second half and shut Southern out of the game, not allowing them to get their hands on the ball.

Southern know that against a side like Rakaia, they can’t let that happen again or they could find themselves heading into round four without a win on the board.

Today’s games will kick off at 2.45pm with Celtic at home to Hampstead, and Southern set to play at the Mayfield Domain for the first time this season, having played their home combined competition games at Hinds.

Grassroots questions for New Zealand rugby

By Patrick McKendry Avert your eyes from Super Rugby’s impending playoffs because it’s not all milk and honey in what many Kiwis believe is the true home of rugby.

The New Zealand under-20s team’s defeat to their South African counterparts and then, more shockingly, Wales in Argentina this week is more evidence of the challenge ahead for New Zealand Rugby and Steve Tew’s replacement as its boss.

If you start putting the pieces together and ignore the fact that four of the top eight Super Rugby teams are Kiwi sides, these are increasingly difficult times for the game here.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if the All Blacks are not successful at the World Cup which starts in Tokyo in fewer than 100

days there will be serious questions asked about the direction and health of the game in New Zealand, which will include the alarming state of club rugby, especially in Auckland.

Actually, they should be asked regardless because another All Black win could merely paper over the cracks.

Back to the under-20s; their 2517 defeat to South Africa which knocked them out of the finals when a losing bonus point was all they needed to progress was bad enough, but to follow it up with an 8-7 reverse to Wales ensures this is their worst world championship.

They will play Ireland for seventh place overnight.

The result is by no means a given.

It doesn’t take a genius to suggest the rest of the world has caught up to New Zealand in

terms of its performances at this level.

The Six Nations under-20s sides have a big advantage now as they participate in their own competition, and the likes of France and England pour a huge amount of resources into those teams, and the more modest resources enjoyed by New Zealand means the bigger picture for this team is about getting players ready to slot straight into Super Rugby, and then the All Blacks, always the All Blacks.

And that’s probably the big issue that needs to be addressed.

There’s no doubt the All Blacks are important for their legacy and who they can inspire.

But there is now a growing undercurrent which suggests that New Zealand Rugby have focused on them at the expense of everything else, and particular-

ly the grassroots game.

The pessimists will say that has now become obvious at a high performance level and point to the under-20s, who last won a world championship in 2017, as an obvious example.

They owned the tournament when it started in 2008.

Optimists may say the continued success of the All Blacks and inclusion of the Crusaders, Hurricanes, Chiefs and Highlanders in the Super Rugby playoffs suggest that is not the case.

But the day of reckoning could be coming and Auckland could be its ground zero.

There are player representatives who say talented secondary school kids from south and west Auckland have no interest in playing for the Blues, despite the fact these children may not have left Auckland in their lives.

There are other, more concrete, signs of failure.

The Glenfield club’s premier team in the North Harbour competition have defaulted for the remainder of the season because they can’t attract enough players.

Their premier 2 side arrived at North Shore’s Vauxhall Road ground last Saturday for a match with only 10 players.

Three more arrived just before kick-off and the match went ahead.

The result was a 113-0 final scoreline for North Shore.

A North Shore members’ newsletter said: “There were no winners.”

These are worrying times and New Zealand Rugby will know it.

The question is, what are they going to do about it?

It’s the No.1 question for Tew’s successor.

Home ground advantage a winner After weeks on the road, the AshHutt girls’ rugby first XV finally got to play their first home game of the season on Wednesday night, and they made the most of the opportunity.

They gave their brand new playing strip the perfect debut, coming away with a 20-10 win over Timaru’s Roncalli College, although the Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College combined side didn’t have it all their own way at Celtic.

Roncalli always brought a rough and ready game to the table, and Wednesday was no exception, with the AshHutt girls put off their stride and going down a try early on.

They finally wore the opposition down though, gaining a bit of ascendancy and the tight forwards – particularly the front row of Sophie Adkins, Emma Rollinson and Jess Smith – dominating at set pieces and especially at scrum time, coach Grant Elvines said.

When a sustained period of attack resulted in a penalty five metres out from the Roncalli line, quick thinking by number eight Aidan Elvines saw her crash over from the quick tap for AshHutt’s first try.

From that point on AshHutt had the bulk of territory and possession and Madison Trusler-Clark scored out wide late in the half to send her side to the break 10-5 up.

The second half continued to be a torrid and at times bad tempered affair, but the AshHutt girls kept their composure and could have been well ahead, if it hadn’t

been for some poor option taking and good Roncalli goal-line defence which kept the score in check.

Eventually the pressure did tell though, with tries to Megan Hurley and Manee Mannex-Peter extending their side’s lead, and a late Roncalli consolation try making for a final score of 20-10, which

probably was a bit flattering to Roncalli, coach Elvines said.

He said forwards Grace Bleach, Megan Hurley and Tyla Harraway were into everything boots and all, while wing Tara Mellish was getting better with every game, and Olivia Bishop – who filled in at centre – was the female equivalent of Conrad Smith.

However, fullback Naumai Terekia showed she was more like Buck Shelford, playing the last 10 minutes with a bent and broken finger.

The win was AshHutt’s third of the season and this week they are set to head to Methven to play Craighead at 5pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Mid Canterbury Combined boys’ team in the Crusaders region secondary schools’ rugby competition will be up against it today.

They’re yet to win a game in the UC Championship this season and today they’re in Christchurch to play the team that’s top-of-thetable, St Andrews.

A sense of calm in pre-World Cup New Zealand rugby

I

n the phony rugby wars that break out before World Cups something strange is happening in New Zealand.

True to form there’s a shot being fired from England, with the new CEO of the Rugby Football Union (yes, plebs like me will always find it amusing that they don’t feel the need to put their country’s name in the title) saying that when he worked for adidas in 2004 he found the All Blacks arrogant, and dismissive of England’s Cup victory in Australia the year before.

Call that at the least stale news, possibly fake news.

Sadly what’s not so silly is that we’re already hearing that the owners of French clubs are telling Pasfika players they’ll rip up their contracts if they play for their countries at the Cup in Japan.

But what’s slightly spooky here is that, compared to the shivers running down spines before the 2015 Cup, a sense of calm seems to have developed across the nation.

Let’s look at the comparisons, and also what might be soothing previously furrowed brows.

Old and stale in 2015.

From 2013 onwards, there was a push from some commentators for, yes I know this sounds ridiculous now, but it really did happen, to ditch Dan Carter and Richie McCaw. Time to move Carter to make way for a younger, better player in Aaron Cruden, said one columnist in July, 2013.

“Logic suggests the All Blacks will not win the Cup in 2015 with a 33-year-old at 10.”

Thundered another pundit in May, 2015, about McCaw, “Retire now Richie. Steve Hansen is threatening to defend the Webb Ellis Cup with a bunch of old-timers – a few too many – including well-over-30 veterans McCaw, Dan Carter, Jerome Kaino, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock and Conrad Smith. Shag’s Army will be Dad’s Army.”

In passing five of those old codgers were in the team that whipped Australia 34-17 in the final.

But wise and steady in 2019.

Steve Hansen has always acknowledged that the greatest balancing act in selection is knowing when a player is ready, and when he’s past it.

I’d suggest that he and Ian Foster and Grant Fox got it spot on in 2015. That may explain why not too many calls for a cull of the oldies have been sparked by the fact that if Sonny Bill Williams frees himself from injury he’s likely to be in the 2019 squad, and that Kieran Read will be the captain if he continues his long term recovery from his December, 2017 back operation.

In 2015 it was called disrespecting Super Rugby.

McCaw, and in particular Carter, were very slow starters in Super Rugby that year. It was a real problem for the Crusaders, who suffered the indignity of not even making the playoffs. But if the duo were lacklustre in February, they had wings on their heels at Twickenham in October.

In 2019 we seem to have realised you can’t peak for 10

months.

The All Blacks coaches have made no secret of the fact that, for example, Sam Whitelock, after playing virtually every game for the Crusaders in 2017, was “hollowed out”, in Foster’s words, by the time the All Blacks toured Britain at the end of the year.

Of course it would be great if the rugby season wasn’t the show that never ends, but as irritating as the rest breaks for All Blacks this year can be, which would you rather have?

All guns blazing in Super Rugby? Or the All Blacks in top form in Japan?

Because the reality is you can’t have both.

The injury list doesn’t feel like such a worry any more.

Not wanting to jinx anything, so let’s not carry on too much about this.

But the fact Ben Smith, Owen Franks, Liam Squire, Sam Cane, Brodie Retallick, Codie Taylor, Dane Coles, and Sonny Bill are all back in harness does feel that normal service for the All Blacks is close at hand.

What teams concerned us in 2015?

In August of 2015 I spoke at a number of functions up and down the country promoting In The Cup, a book I’d written on the All Blacks campaigns. At various places I shared a stage with Sir Brian Lochore, Grizz Wyllie, and All Blacks captains Reuben Thorne, Tane Norton, Andy Leslie and Dave Loveridge. The All Blacks greatest threat? An almost unanimous vote for England. They all paid due respect to South Africa and Australia, but England, so big, so tough, so full of expectation, loomed as the bogeyman. They didn’t make the quarter-finals.

What teams should we worry about in 2019?

I’d go for South Africa, who we face in our first game in pool play on September 21, and I know that wiser heads than mine inside the All Blacks believe that Australia, even with all the Folau uproar, and their deeply mediocre Super Rugby teams, could still stitch together a very good squad, many of whom will have the belief that anything is possible.

Busy times on the turf

Wakanui will today try to get back to their winning ways in the South Canterbury senior men’s hockey competition, before many of their crew turn their attention to Mid Canterbury duties tomorrow.

Wakanui are back off to Timaru today – the scene of their 3-2 loss to Northern Hearts last weekend - for their latest match in the South Canterbury senior men’s hockey competition, and tomorrow many of them will exchange Wakanui’s blue, for the green and gold of Mid Canterbury, to host their counterparts from the West Coast in a couple of one-off rep fixtures.

Wakanui’s opposition today, as they look to bounce back from what was just their second loss of the season, is old foes Cambridge – the side currently third on the table, just one point back from Wakanui.

Northern Hearts’ win last weekend put them up to number one, and dropped Wakanui back to second.

In the senior women’s competition, it’s been a different story for Mid Canterbury’s sole team – Hampstead – in recent weeks.

After a not so good start to the season for the traditionally strong side, they’ve been on the up and are now third on their table behind top side Geraldine and second placed Cambridge.

Hampstead had the bye last weekend and will today be in action at the Ashburton hockey turf, searching for their third win of the season against Timaru Girls’ High School, in a game which will get under way at 2.40pm.

Then, tomorrow, it’ll be all go at the Ashburton turf again with the West Coast men – both their A and B sides – making the trip across the Southern Alps to play

Jeremy Moore is among the Wakanui players with a busy weekend ahead, being part of the Mid Canterbury A side to play the West Coast tomorrow, too.

New shooter for Southern Steel; Tactix gain Selby-Rickit An exciting new-look shooting combination will feature for the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel in 2020.

The franchise has secured the services of Trinidad and Tobago shooting star Kalifa McCollin, adding an unpredictability to the team’s attacking ranks.

McCollin, who is 1.80m tall, is likely to partner Steel’s 1.92m Jen O’Connell who has re-committed to the team.

However, long-serving shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit has opted to head north to the Tactix, while South African Lenize Potgieter will ply her trade in Australia next season.

The challenge of developing a new combination was eagerly anticipated by O’Connell.

“I’m super excited to be back for 2020 and can’t wait to build new connections.

Kalifa McCollin will be joining the Southern Steel for the 2020 netball season.

“For me personally, I’m determined to work on being a more consistent player,” she said.

“Getting the chance to experience another style of play will be pretty cool and Kalifa will inject some international flavour into the team.”

Impressing in the UK’s Vitality Superleague for the past three years, McCollin’s superior accuracy earned her a place in the com-

petition’s coveted All Stars team this season.

The 23-year-old sports psychology student was excited to embark on the next chapter in her netball career.

“I was buzzing when the Steel called. I told my dad first because between him and my mom he’s more calm.

“My mom overheard the conversation and before I could say

anything she started crying tears of joy because she knows how hard I work,” she said.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Southern Steel. They’re a top team so it’ll be great to now be a part of such a strong unit.”

Selby-Rickit has been a loyal campaigner since joining the team as a 19-year-old in 2011 and admits it was a difficult decision to leave.

“I’ve called the south home for a number of years now. I’ve had so many people influence me with different coaches and players.

“I have literally grown up here and made some of my closest friends so leaving is very difficult but I feel like the time is right to make a change,” she said.

“I’m going to miss the steel a lot – the franchise has been like family to me and I’ve made so many memories with this club.

“I’ve been really fortunate to be able to play with my sister and my best friend for so many years – not many people get to do that week in and week out and call it a job so I’m really grateful.”

The move was not just netball focused, with Selby-Rickit eager to spread her wings.

“For me it’s about growth and seeking something new to get out of my comfort zone.

“I’ve always loved Christchurch as a city and there’s a lot of new and exciting things happening there so I’m looking forward to moving north.

“Joining the Tactix gives me a chance to play with new people.

“Obviously having Jane as our captain who I’ve played with in the Steel before and know really well, she always speaks highly of the Tactix and the environment they have been creating.”

In brief Tackling the champs Things don’t get any easier for the Ashburton Barbarians in this weekend’s round of the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition. A week after narrowly losing to this season’s top team, Marist Saints, the Barbarians are on the road to Burnham today to take on the defending champion Burnham Chevaliers. The game will kick off at 1pm at Coronation Park in Burnham.

MCUFC still winning The dream run just keeps on going for Mid Canterbury United in the Mainland Football division one competition. Promoted to the grade after an unbeaten 2018 where they claimed the division two title, they’re yet to lose in division one, and will be hoping to keep that going against the FC Twenty 11 Falcons in Christchurch today. Meanwhile, the club’s second team lost their first game after being promoted to division five last weekend, and will be looking to bounce back against Oxford FC today, in Oxford. The Methven FC Seniors are at home against Burwood AFC at 2.30pm at the Methven Domain, while the Methven FC Reserves are away to Ferrymead Bays Speights.

Business as usual at MSA

When East takes on West Preparing to put a shot up during Wednesday night basketball action at the Oxford Street stadium this week was Nick Moore, who usually takes to the court for Team Donkey in the Mid Canterbury A grade men’s competition. But this week things were a little bit different, with the competition taking a break and a couple of ‘East versus West’ games instead taking to the court, which were much more social than the usual competition games.

Adams impresses in a losing cause for College Ashburton College sides came away with mixed results after taking on two of Christchurch’s top teams in Canterbury secondary schools’ basketball competitions this week.

In the Whelan Trophy division one competition for girls, the Ashburton College girls faced top-of-the-table Christchurch Girls’ High School with a full

squad of 12 players to play with.

It was a tough night at the office, with the Christchurch side running away with it 73-45, but there were plenty of positives to come out of it for the Ashburton girls.

Scoring was balanced across the team, but the title of the night’s top scorer went to Sophie Adams with 15, while Eilish

Pierce added seven and Alena Patterson also in the mix and showing off her sweet outside touch.

Further down the court, excellent mid-court defence from Sam Tuck, Mae Patterson and Phinenah Teves led to some great turnover scoring opportunities.

They will now look to take the lessons learnt from that game

into their next game, on Tuesday at the Oxford Street stadium against Middleton Grange, which will tip off at 5.15pm.

Meanwhile, Ashburton College’s boys in the Thomson Trophy division one competition took on Christchurch Boys’ High School and came away with a much better result on Tuesday night, winning 87-50.

Shock exit for All Whites coach The Fritz Schmid tenure as All Whites coach is over.

New Zealand Football confirmed yesteray that the Swiss had resigned from his role.

His resignation is effective immediately.

“After careful reflection of my private and professional situation, I have decided to return to Switzerland. I have therefore re-

signed from NZ Football effective 21 June 2019,” Schmid said in a statement.

“I am extremely grateful for my experience at the helm of the All Whites.

“I have met countless members of the New Zealand football community, who received me with great respect and true open-mindedness.

“I would like to thank all of them for their trust and support during my time at NZF. My special thanks goes to my coaching staff and, most of all, to our players: thank you for granting me the privilege of working with you.

“It’s been an exciting time and a true experience on culture and values. I will always remain a loyal supporter of the All Whites.”

The Herald understands senior staff from the national body have been in extended meetings with the Swiss over the past few days, with negotiations over the remainder of Schmid’s contract.

It’s believed that the working relationship between NZF technical director Andy Boyens and Schmid has been less than ideal in recent months.

Every Tuesday night, a group of about 20 people comes together at the Ashburton Club and MSA to play some table tennis. It’s something they’ve done for years, and it’s something they plan to continue doing for years to come.

While club members will help out at the EA Networks Centre when a have-a-go at table tennis day is held at the stadium next Sunday, any future table tennis competition at the stadium will run as well as that which takes place at the MSA. While part of the MSA is being demolished and rebuilt later this year, the table tennis crew say they have been assured their home is safe.

World focus on NBL In 2019, the eyes of the wider basketball world will fall on the NBL. Tasked with developing two of the top prospects in the United States, the once niche Australasian competition will have interest on a worldwide scale – with the NZ Breakers and Illawarra Hawks at the centre of it. Earlier this month, the Breakers announced the signing of RJ Hampton, who snubbed offers from top collegiate programmes to spend a year playing professional before being eligible of the NBA draft. This week, his path was followed by LaMelo Ball, who will join former NBA guard Aaron Brooks in Hawks colours this season.

‘One of the greats’ Former Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori has lauded Kane Williamson as New Zealand’s greatest one-day player after his match-winning century against South Africa.

And, Vettori believes there is one key attribute that puts him apart from many of the world’s best batsmen.

“What differentiates him from a lot of batsmen in this day and age is his sole focus is winning the game and he tailors his batting towards that,” Vettori wrote in a column for the ICC. “Kane has done so much in such a short period, whether a captain or not, he’s been exceptional and he’s an absolute joy to watch.

He plays all the shots, he knows how to manipulate the strike and he’s always going to run hard.”

Williamson’s unbeaten 106 – his first World Cup century – saw the Black Caps home against South Africa with three balls to spare, and Vettori believes the way he paced his innings is just one of the reasons why he’ll go down as one of the game’s all-time greats.

“The wicket was tricky, the South African bowling was very good and they took the pace off the ball well, it was a tough time to bat.

“But the way he understood that situation and got his team across the line was exceptional, it’s what makes him one of the greatest in the world now and by the end of his career he’ll be up there with some of the greats of all time.”

And, according to Vettori, who some might say also has a claim to this honour with his 305 ODI wickets, Williamson is New Zealand’s best ever ODI player – ahead of the likes of Martin Crowe, Brendon McCullum, Chris Cairns, Stephen Fleming, Richard Hadlee, and Ross Taylor.

“He’s already there now and by the end of his career his record will far exceed anything we’ve had in the past or present, he really is that good.”

Vettori also had praise for Colin de Grandhomme, who took 1-33 in 10 superbly restrictive overs, before hitting a hugely valuable 60 off 47 balls to support Williamson in the chase of 242 for victory.

“He sees ball, hits ball, and that simplicity makes him a good player. He’d have got confidence from the way he bowled and at times he’s been criticised for the way he bats but you take the rough when you get the smooth of these games.”

We are seeking an Estates Manager to manage our busy Estates Department.

This challenging role involves working autonomously with families and trustees of client estates, liaising with the High Court, banks, government departments, insurance companies, and other entities, to manage and disperse estate assets.

Prior estates management experience would be preferred, however, as there will be ongoing training and support available, this role may also suit a legal executive, senior legal secretary, or other suitably experienced senior administrator looking to advance their career.

The ideal person for this role will have: • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy, and precision with mathematical and accounting tasks; • The ability to effectively prioritise tasks, and work autonomously; • Excellent written and spoken English; • The ability to deliver outstanding customer service to clients and thrive on working to deadlines, be conscientious about your own work and have the ability to multi-task; • Flexibility in your approach and a willingness to help other people when needed; • A sense of humour, and the ability to work well in a team environment.
