A climbing wall and an ice rink could be two new recreational options soon on offer in the Ashburton District as the EA Networks Centre looks to expand its business.

Centre manager Steve Prescott believes a climbing wall could easily be built within the complex’s stadium and said these are common place in many sports centres around New Zealand.

“We’ve got the costings and we now need to work out where it can go so it won’t impact on basketball and netball.

This is about utilising the stadium to the

absolute maximum,” he said.

Prescott is making a case for the climbing wall to be included in the council’s long term plan and hopes it is a project that will be well up the spending order.

He believes the wall could be built for around $250,000.

“The figures will stack up,” he said.

A private investor was keen to build an ice rink alongside the stadium and will present a case for the project at next week’s Ashburton District Council meeting. It’s a project that will be getting Prescott’s support.

He’s tagging land alongside the learners’ pool for the covered rink.

Adding new facilities to the complex was part of a drive to boost the centre’s income and to ensure it was well used year-round.

One option on the radar and one that will cut income, rather than boost it, however, could be free swims for mums and preschoolers.

Moore St solution needed

One of Ashburton’s most congested stretches of road – Moore Street between (State Highway 72) between Park Street and State Highway One – are on the watch list for change.

With three access ways into three businesses from Moore Street and high volumes of heavy traffic using the strip of highway, the accident potential is high and that sees the New Zealand Transport Agency currently monitoring the confluence of the two highways.

When issues warrant, further investigations will be undertaken, NZTA transport planning manager Michael Blyleven said.

“The retail developments on Moore Street and the access provided to the Riverside industrial area and the sports centre have increased traffic volumes on Moore Street, with associated safety issues,” he said.

The possibility of re-designating Racecourse Road as State Highway 72 rather than taking the route down Alford Forest Road, River Terrace and Moore Street had been raised, Blyleven said, but that was unlikely to reduce traffic volumes on Moore Street because this route was closer to the centre of Ashburton.

The transport agency worked closely with the Ashburton District Council to identify problems and solutions and when to implement these, he said.

Fauth, said the highway re-designation cropped up from time to time at the council’s roading discussion groups, but relocating the highway was unlikely to take much heavy traffic out of town as vehicles still needed to access the Riverside Industrial area off River Terrace.

“Yes, it’s a bit of a nightmare around Moore Street and as a roading engineer I’m simply looking at this the confusion around the three entrance ways to Harvey Norman, New World and Mitre 10,” he said.

“In one instance it would be good to get as much traffic out of this area as we could but on the other hand we’d have to invest in other feeder roads into Riverside.”

Rather than relocate the highway, a solution could be to limit access and egress from, and onto, the highway to the three businesses, either by consolidating some entranceways or making some entrance or exit only and make better use of secondary entranceways on Kermode and Tancred Streets, he said.

The strip of highway was always on the council’s radar and there was plenty of evidence that it created some headaches for motorists, Fauth said.

He said he was surprised there hadn’t been a higher accident rate and suggested that could be because people were usually on high alert when using that stretch of road.

East Street trees get a tidy-up The stately oak trees on Ashburton’s East Street green have been receiving some special attention this week.

Aborists have been perched in branches high among the tree tops giving the trees their

annual prune, both in the interests of safety and to ensure long limbs do not obscure street lights, said Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin.

In addition to pruning the

trees, arborists are removing cables that once provided power to strings of bud lights.

The cables were having a significant impact on some trees and in some cases were strangling tree growth, Askin said.

Skating rink on stadium’s radar From P1 The Christchurch City Council will start a trial in September that will see preschoolers given free access to council pools between 9am and 3pm on school days.

Ashburton councillors stopped short of offering a similar deal when the option was discussed earlier this year, but council service delivery manager Neil McCann said he will be watching the Christchurch pilot with interest.

“We were aware Christchurch was considering doing this and

we were happy to go with it but because of the financial implications it’s a decision that has to be made by councillors,” McCann said.

Currently the council charges $5 for an adult with one preschooler to access the pools.

While cutting fees was all about boosting numbers, higher numbers also boosted costs when it came to chemicals and heating, he said.

“Financially at the centre we’re trying hard to cut costs; it costs a lot of money to run. No pool

complexes make money that’s why they’re run by councils because they’re an important community facility and councils around the country are prepared to pay.”

The council is also working through options for developing sports fields around the stadium and McCann intends to have proposals built into the council’s next long term plan.

These are likely to include opportunities for rugby and softball and could also include the relocation of the town’s skatepark.

In brief Drumming workshop The date for next month’s West African Drumming Workshop has changed from July 29 to July 30.

Otago-based professional African drumming and dance instructor Koffie Fugah will lead the workshop at Community House.

Fugah said he had reserved some places especially for primary and secondary school pupils, who he hoped would enrol alongside the adults expected to attend.

FAR discusses chemical effects

The increasing risk of herbicide and insecticide resistance was one of the topics discussed at a Foundation of Arable Researchhosted farm visit just out of Tinwald yesterday.

About 20 members of FAR’s Arable Ys young farmers group, along with a number of others involved in the industry, visited Ross Stackhouse’s Frasers Road farm to hear FAR herbage research manager Richard Chynoweth discuss spring management of wheat and ryegrass.

Those who attended began

the afternoon in a paddock planted in ryegrass, where they heard Chynoweth talk about the variety of winter diseases that can affect ryegrass and how to control them.

In a neighbouring paddock planted in clover that showed signs of grass grub, he discussed the products available to deal with the pest, noting that there was no substitute to putting an insect control into the ground at planting.

However, he said that widespread repeated use of insecticides should be avoided to minimise the chance of resistance

developing.

There was also a growing risk of herbicide resistance cropping up on today’s farms, Chynoweth said.

“We need to be careful about herbicide use and to find other methods to control weeds so we can continue to use herbicides,” he said.

It was important that farmers kept good spray records, he said, especially if they were growing ryegrass as a seed crop.

Chynoweth also touched on the danger of contamination from contractors’ equipment going from farm to farm, or pad-

dock to paddock, a subject that was expanded on by the host of the next stop on yesterday’s tour.

After the farm visit the Arable Ys went to Quigley Contracting in Tinwald, where they heard managing director Andrew Quigley discuss the contracting business.

Quigley said the company was well aware of the issues around possible contamination caused by dragging foreign seed from one farm to the next.

He said they did everything they could within reason to ensure this did not happen.

Heavy precipitation over the next couple of days will delight skiers but may cause surface flooding in Ashburton. MetService forecaster Cameron Coutts said potentially around 100 millimetres of rain would fall in Ashburton, and half a metre of snow would fall on Mt Hutt. Snow will fall down to about 600 metres, covering the mountains and foothills, and conditions will be cold and wet on the plains. Rain was to develop overnight last night and set in this morning with winds turning around to the south-east.

Tomorrow rain would continue, and 40 millimetres or more could be received in Ashburton.

Save the Children Save the Children Fund New Zealand will be 70 years old on July 4, and the Ashburton branch will hold a birthday luncheon. Guest speaker will be the organisation’s new chief executive Heidi Coetzee.

SCF was established by Minnie Gregory Havelaar, who emigrated to New Zealand from England after the First World War. She was already 70 years of age when she founded the North Canterbury branch and was its president for 24 years. Ashburton’s branch will celebrate its 60th anniversary as well as the 100th anniversary of the organisation internationally in 2019.

The July 4 luncheon will be held at the Masonic Lodge at midday, with a cost of $25.

Schools’ Music Festival under way Review: The Heartland Bank Schools’ Music Festival - Tuesday June 20, 2017 Participating schools: Wakanui, Allenton, Ashburton Borough Junior Choir, Ashburton Intermediate Choir A, Representative choir and Rasta Monkey from Wayne’s School of Rock/Mt Hutt College.

The opening night to the Heartland Bank Schools’ Music Festival began with the massed choir, conducted by Anna Lischner singing God of Nations and Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora. These were both great, polished performances of these iconic and proud New Zealand songs.

Next, we had the pleasure of Allenton School, conducted by Kerrin Lester. When I Grow Up was a very positive song for these young singers, Safe and Sound was obvi-

ously a favourite with the choir as their enthusiasm grew and their voices were very strong in this song.

Following Allenton were Ashburton Borough Junior Choir, conducted and accompanied by Jo Castelow. Too Hot to Tango was a snappy, very entertaining number with fantastic actions that complemented the children’s singing.

If I Only Had a Brain was very animated with wonderful movement.

The massed choir, conducted by Melanie Sloan then sang Rise, that the children sang with passion and polish. Brave was definitely a favourite of the choir and next we were treated to Colours of the Wind which was a more thoughtful song, and a pleasure to listen to.

Wakanui School was up next,

conducted and accompanied by Cherie Livingstone with firstly The Cup Song, Saltwater followed with great placement of the singers on stage.

Back to the massed choir, conducted this time by Kerrin Lester.

The Sound of Silence saw the choir take on quite a solemn song with a lot of conviction and gusto.

On a lighter note Purple People Eater had fun actions for the children and they performed it with a lot of enthusiasm.

Radio Gaga started with much excitement, the robot dancing and the children showed a lot of enthusiasm singing this rock classic.

The Ashburton Intermediate Choir A entertained us next, conducted and accompanied by Jo Castelow. Anyway was sung with lovely light and shade, by very tal-

ented young singers. Chattanooga Choo Choo was next with fantastic actions that accompanied the singing to perfection.

Rasta Monkey from Wayne’s School of Rock/Mount Hutt College performed at the Music Festival which gave a fresh, different take on the night.

They performed two songs, Siri and Unchartered Waters which included a little bit of audience participation which was fun!

Then it was the Representative Choir’s turn with conductor Elaine Vallender to show the audience and the younger singers from various schools what can be achieved with a few years’ practice.

The Leonard Cohen classic Hallelujah was a fantastic choice and brilliant soloist Esme Heffernan

sang with such heart and presence.

The Circle of Life was then performed with the very talented Henrietta Harford as soloist.

The various choirs once again came together as the massed choir, conducted by Anna Lischner. Better When I’m Dancin was a fabulous upbeat, fun song for the children to sing.

The very last song for this most enjoyable evening was the John Farnham classic You’re The Voice.

The very talented Ruairidh McLean treated us by playing the bagpipes during this song, which was just magic!

Thank you for an entertaining evening. The future of Ashburton’s singing talent looks very promising indeed!

Entries up for art calendar highlight

New Zealand painter Michael Eaton flew in a helicopter around Mt Cook to get inspiration for his latest series.

Up Close Aoraki includes four works which the well-known artist dropped in to the Ashburton Art Gallery yesterday, in the leadup to the Ashburton Society of Arts 53rd annual exhibition.

“It’s really a response to contrast and colour and getting a different view point,” the 79-year-old said.

Usually landscape works showed mountains as viewed from below, so to be close to them was a fresh perspective.

Eaton is among guest artists at this year’s exhibition. He lives at Waipara and has painted and taught art and art teaching his whole life. He went to art school after leaving school, and has exhibited alongside Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere.

It is a career which has also included setting up a vineyard with his second wife after his first wife passed away, and one which has

seen him dedicate more time to painting since the couple sold the vineyard 10 years ago.

“When I first started exhibit-

ing I would sell a painting for five guineas, which is 10 dollars,” he said. Today those same paintings sell for in the thousands.

All works at the society’s exhibition, a highlight of the art calendar in Mid Canterbury, are for sale, and will range from as low as

$30 to more than $5000. The Up Close Aoraki works are priced at $3500 each.

Exhibition secretary Jen Dearborn said she was pleased with the high number of entries, 155, compared to 136 last year. She believed the excellent venue and more people finding out about the competition was responsible. Entries are from as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Invercargill.

This Saturday will be receiving day, where all the artists will drop in their items. Works will be hung over the next week prior to the exhibition opening night on July 3.

Tickets are on sale for the evening.

The exhibition will run fromJuly 4 to 28.

Pannett, Sivier combine talents

Comedian Georgie Sivier and music teacher Wayne Pannett are pooling their talents for a rock musical at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre later this year.

Well-known Mid Canterbury performers Georgie Sivier and Wayne Pannett are pooling their artistic talents to bring a hardhitting rock musical to the stage.

Tomorrow is Too Late will stage at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on November 16, 17 and 18.

The pair are holding auditions next month, and will be forming a performers’ co-operative where everyone involved will receive a share of the profits.

Tomorrow is Too Late will feature rock songs by bands such as The Living End, Queen, Iron Maiden, The Who, Disturbed,

Gwen Stefani and Pink Floyd.

Camera feeds and a light show will complement the singers.

There will be no dialogue, the music and visuals will tell the whole story, which will be themed around becoming motivated to change the world.

“We are well into the lighting plan already, you normally don’t get into that this early, but it’s going to be such a technically mental show,” Sivier said.

Sivier is a Big Little Theatre Company graduate in her early 20s who has established the Christchurch-based PlaySpace Theatre Company, producing and directing shows, and she performs in stand-up comedy.

Pannett is a mentor of music for Methven’s youth through his Wayne’s School of Rock.

He is also a keen actor and musical director, and he and Sivier have worked together at the Methven Theatre Company.

“We have been planning it for three years, every show afterparty we dreamed about doing a rock opera,” Sivier said.

“We are going to make theatre fans out of rock people, and rock fans out of theatre people,” Pannett said.

Aussies and Kiwis – we’re besties again Forget the underarm bowling incident of 1981, forget the transTasman rugby rivalry, Kiwis and Aussies are officially BFFs. That’s according to Australian participants in a newly released Lowy Institute poll, which saw Aussies rate their antipodean sibling as their global “best friend”, toppling the United States from their previously held position.

The upset is evocative of 2015’s viral “friendship ended” meme, where Pakistani man Asif Rasa Rana turfed his best-friend Mudasir, declaring their friendship ended and that his new best friend was Salman.

His poorly photoshopped declaration was all too applicable to the newly released poll result.

The Lowy Institute, a Sydney think tank, released its annual poll testing Australians’ attitudes to international and domestic issues.

Key findings showed most Australians were worried about where the world was headed, but were more confident about their country’s future, with about half

saying they were satisfied with the state of the nation.

However the most striking finding for us Kiwis was New Zealand’s ascension to “best friend” status, overtaking the United States as the preferred answer when Australians were asked who their “best friend” in the world was.

New Zealand comes first, with 53 per cent (up 21 points since 2014) nominating it as Australia’s best friend, beating the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, and Indonesia.

Once named as Australia’s closest buddy, the US now has to contend with sharing the lowly status of second-best friend with the United Kingdom.

The poll did not ask which country Australians would rather crack a cold one open with.

It’s possible Donald Trump’s infamous phone call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull may have played a part.

It was reported in February Trump had abruptly ended the call halfway and described it as the “worst call by far” out of five

that day, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump had reportedly boasted about his election win and objected to Turnbull pushing him to honour an agreement to take 1250 refugees from Nauru and Manus.

Turnbull recently got his own back however, in a leaked recording showing him mocking Trump during the Parliament House’s Mid Winter Ball in Canberra.

Despite tensions the Lowy poll showed so far Trump’s presidency had not affected Australians’ support for the US alliance, which has rebounded six points.

Only 29 per cent said “Australia should distance itself from the United States under President Donald Trump”, 16 points lower than in response to a corresponding question before the US elections in 2016.

However, President Trump remains unpopular. Six in 10 Australians said Donald Trump caused them to have an unfavourable opinion of the United States.

Garden bird survey

Scientists have been alarmed at observed declines among some of New Zealand’s best-known garden birds.

Landcare Research has just published data drawn from its annual New Zealand Garden Bird Survey – kicking off again this Saturday – that showed species counted had declined over the past decade.

Reported numbers of our most common native bird found in our gardens, the silvereye, or waxeye, had declined by 44 per cent nationally, with particular drops observed in Otago and Southland.

This was partly put down to increasing winter temperatures over the 10 years that the citizen science project, covering nearly 29,000 gardens, had taken place.

Six of the most common spe-

cies in our gardens, all introduced from Europe, had also declined, the data suggested.

This included drops of between 25 to 50 per cent among starling, goldfinch and song thrush, and falls of between 10 and 25 per cent among chaffinch, dunnock and blackbirds.

But it wasn’t all bad news: the data also showed tui counts had increased 14 per cent nationally over 10 years.

Bellbird and fantail numbers climbed by 3 and 2 per cent over the same period, but the biggest increases were seen among swallows (55 per cent) greenfinches (26 per cent) tui and myna (11 per cent).

Kereru numbers dropped 7 per cent.

Attack at Brussels station Belgian authorities said they foiled a “terror attack” when soldiers shot and killed a suspect after a small explosion at a busy Brussels train station that continued a week of attacks in the capitals of Europe.

Federal prosecutor Eric Van der Sypt said soldiers “neutralised” a male suspect at the Central Station immediately after the explosion. The man lay still for several hours while a bomb squad checked whether he was armed with more explosives.

Prosecutor’s spokeswoman Ine Van Wymersch confirmed his death and said no other explosives were found on his body.

Belgium’s Crisis Centre, which monitors security threats in the country, said based on initial information it did not see a need to raise the country’s terror threat to the highest level and kept it at the second-highest level.

Van der Sypt said no one else was injured besides the suspect and the damage from the explosion was limited.

The attack came well after the evening rush hour had dissipated.

Nicolas Van Herreweghen, who works for Belgium’s national rail company, said the male suspect was very agitated, yelling about jihadists and then “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” before blowing up something on a baggage trolley.

The government agency that owns Belgium’s railways was warned by a train driver who saw people running across the rail lines inside the station, spokesman Arnaud Reymann told broadcaster RTL. National newspaper La Libre Belgique quoted the prosecutor’s office as saying the suspect was wearing a backpack and an explosive belt.

The Central Station is one of the busiest in the nation and soldiers could be seen patrolling there after the explosion. It was evacuated along with the Belgian capital’s Grand Place, a major tourist site about 200 metres away.

Belgium has been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people on the Brussels subway and at an airport in March 2016. Extra police and soldiers in camouflage gear have become a common sight in crowded areas.

Daniel Day Lewis to retire Daniel Day-Lewis, one of the most widely respected actors of his generation and a three-time Oscar-winner, says he’s retiring from acting. The 60-year-old British actor announced that he has shot his last film and performed in his last play. That makes Paul Thomas Anderson’s already filmed Phantom Thread, due out in December, his final film. “Daniel DayLewis will no longer be working as an actor,” his representative Leslee Dart said in a statement. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and he will make no further comment on this subject.”

Too hot to fly Meteorologists in the US say the temperature has topped out at 48°C in Phoenix as a stifling heat wave blanketing the southwest brought some of the hottest weather in years.

“The objects are irrefutable proof that high-ranking Nazis took refuge in Argentina,” said Ariel Cohen Sabban, president of the Delegacion de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas, an umbrella organisation of Argentina’s Jewish community.

Among the high-ranking Nazis who fled to Argentina after the war were Josef Mengele, a notorious Nazi physician who performed deadly experiments on prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Adolf Eichmann, one of the main organisers of the Holocaust, also lived in Buenos Aires until he was captured in 1960 by Israeli intelligence agents.

Auditor-general resigns from Vatican

The Vatican’s auditor-general has resigned in what is seen as a blow to Australian Cardinal George Pell.

Libero Milone’s exit is the latest twist in the Holy See’s long-running effort to get its financial statements in order.

A Vatican statement said Milone had offered his resignation and Pope Francis had accepted it. A search is underway for a replacement.

No reason was given, but Milone along with Cardinal Pell – prefect of the Vatican’s economy secretariat – have clashed with the Vatican bureaucracy over auditing issues, particularly with the office in charge of the Vatican’s assets and patrimony, APSA.

Philippine officials say Muslim rebels are engaging troops in a gunbattle in a southern village in an attack that may be an attempt to divert the military’s focus away from the militants who have laid siege on southern Marawi city.

Police Chief Inspector Realan Mamon said that an unspecified number of gunmen belonging raided the village of Malagakit and engaged government forces in a firefight. Villagers have fled to safety.

Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla says the gunmen targeted a patrol base of pro-government militiamen and the attack maybe an effort by the militants to divert troop focus on the Marawi offensive. - NZME

In a new interview Malik opened up about his relationship with Hadid, and how they try to stay normal. Malik and Hadid are constantly making headlines, but the singer would prefer they not be referred to as a power couple. “That’s not something I want to be a part of,” he confessed. “I’m with her because I like her and I hope she’s with me because she likes me. We just spend time together as a normal couple.”

Muslim rebels attack village

Rapper dies Rapper Prodigy, a member of the hardcore New York hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, has died. He was 42. The rapper’s publicist said in a statement that Prodigy was hospitalised a few days ago in Las Vegas “for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis”. Prodigy has battled sickle cell since birth and was in Las Vegas for a performance. The exact cause of death was not clear, the representative said. Prodigy was born in New York. He found success in the 90s with fellow rapper Havoc in Mobb Deep.

The duo’s hits included Quiet Storm Shook Ones (Part II) and Hey Luv.

pinions. We’ve all got them, but not everybody likes them.

But that’s the great thing about opinions, they are there to create debate, to generate discussion and not please everyone.

Because if they did, what would be the point of having an opinion?

We deal with opinions daily in the world of newspapers and the media.

They flow in and out of our doors like the Rakaia River does in full flood and they come from both the community and our staff.

And our role, as the independent voice of Mid Canterbury, is to relay those opinions to you, our readers. Whether we agree with them or not.

What we are not keen on doing is getting into the practice of holding someone back from having their voice heard.

If there is someone out there who wants to say something, then it is their right to be given the chance to do exactly that.

Again, whether it be negative or positive.

Obviously, there are exceptions to each and every rule, but in the broadest sense of the term, we will accept almost anything.

Unfortunately, however, sometimes someone else’s opinion can cause quite the commotion.

And yesterday was one of those instances.

Our decision to run ‘Daisy’s Story’ – a letter to the editor, sent to us by one of our readers, drew widespread criticism.

We understand the passion out there for the dairy industry and we applaud each and every person for the work they do in that sector, but purely based on the thought process that some people would be upset by what Daisy had to say – we could not deny the author from having her voice heard.

What we have done today, however, is allow some of those who reacted to Daisy’s piece of prose, to have their chance at a rebuttal. And plenty have been willing to do exactly that and we have welcomed it.

There are always two sides to every story. And both sides need to be told, especially when it comes to one’s opinion.

We will continue to allow people’s voices to be heard.

It is then your choice to decide if you agree, or not, after all, isn’t that what a democracy is all about?

Just make sure you let us know.

Majority of cows cared for

I

t was disappointing to read about “Daisy” and her owner’s plight.

While the few years of lower payouts have put a lot of pressure on farmers, the vast majority have been incredibly proactive in keeping their animal health and welfare practices to high standards.

Like has been mentioned, feeds such as fodderbeet are a high quality feed and is carefully managed by farmers, especially when cows are transitioning on to and off the feed with supplements and the like.

We need to remember Mid Canterbury has large variations in climate throughout the year, and crops such as these are crucial to keep cows fed through months where the cold weather simply prohibits adequate

grass growth. One of the golden rules we, as farmers, live by is feeding our livestock well. The consequences if we don’t are farreaching as have been covered in other comments.

Our farming businesses have huge moral and financial commitments to those such as our staff, banks, our local communities and businesses which largely hinge on our livestock being healthy, well fed and thriving.

Farmers have spent vast sums of money upgrading effluent systems, introducing new technologies and improving their farms in a small part because of environmental and local government pressures, but mainly because we want to see our farms improving, becoming more efficient so that we can farm not

just in the here and now, but for the future generations of Mid Cantabrians that will follow us.

It is important to note that as farmers we live and breathe our farms and businesses 24/7, 365 days a year. It hits a raw nerve that people would negatively judge those farmers that choose to go on holiday. Many farmers are self-employed and run large-scale businesses with sound business and employment practices. Many are not employees with specific holiday entitlements.

Ashburton and Mid Canterbury have a strong agricultural history with many businesses having a direct or indirect influence on, or from the agricultural sector.

As a community we should be proud of where we sit nation-

ally, and internationally, of our industry and the products we produce, as well as the people who work directly or indirectly in the agriculture sector.

Every industry will have a “bad egg”, and how we support these people, rather than publicly shaming them, defines us as people and a community.

Opinions aside, Mid Canterbury farmers are certainly a significant cog in the wheel that turns our region.

From a dairy farmer to ‘Daisy’ Dairy farmer, Paul Vincent, responds to ‘Daisy’ opinion:

which helps deal with cooler temperatures If I was a human I’d be in hospital with anorexia, warm and lots of food, but no, I’m out in the cold, you might get kale, or maybe fodderbeet. Fodderbeet would be the worst thing for a cow to eat. It really mucks up my system.

Paul – Fodderbeet is a great feed which is very palatable and high in sugar (you can eat it, it’s quite nice) there is a transition period where cows are introduced to fodderbeet where they are fed grass then the beets to prevent acidosis and metabolic issues. Cows are watched for any signs of acidosis and this is shown by bubbles in the faeces.

Any signs of trouble the cow is removed from beet and offered grass or silage.

Hi, Just a heads up about empty rates in dairy cows, a story about me, I am Daisy, one of those 20 to 40 per cent cows not in calf.

Paul – The average empty rate for the 2016 mating season was 18 per cent nationwide as commented by our local vet.

I will start at the beginning. I was born, didn’t get a feed from my mother, it was all plugged up with teat seal, Paul – Cattle develop a natural teat seal which cannot always do the job properly. We teat seal cows during the dry period to prevent mastitis during the milking season. The seal is easily removed during the first milking when the cow produces colostrum milk after birth for an average of four days. The milk is free flowing and readily available. We need to ensure the cow is milking fine and the calf is given colostrum milk.

I was picked up, put in a shed, fed nice milk for a couple of days, then things turned nasty. I was fed once a day from then on, Paul – Best practice and most common is fed twice a day with access to water. Even bobby calves are fed twice a day.

Battling with everybody else, Paul – Best practice is one square metre of area in calving pens per calf with dry bedding sheltered from the rain and weather.

I was underweight, hungry most of the time, the hay and pellets gone by the time I got there.

Paul – Calves in sheds are fed more than they need in the paddock if left on the cow, heifers especially will kick calves or abandon them. Hay and pellets are given and are always kept available. Most of the time if the calf is not feeding or running around with the other calves they are

sleeping.

Days turn into weeks. Then you are put in a paddock to eat grass.

Paul – We feed the calves milk with a calf feeder and either meal or a mix of feed as well as grass. This stimulates rumen activation and weight gain.

There is always a fence up and never enough to eat, I did grow into a heifer although a small one, Paul – Fences are up to manage grass usage and stop over feeding. Calves are only sent off to grazing or run off when they have reached target weight and condition, usually 100kg. Dry stock managers are paid based on keeping weight gain and the calves are weighed to ensure proper growth.

Then I had a calf, I didn’t get to feed it.

Paul – As said above ‘Best practice and most common is fed twice a day with access to water. Even bobby calves are fed twice a day’. Calves from heifers are typically bobby calves, but are still fed twice a day for four days minimum.

Now its poor life is starting

in the shed. Then, the season of milking started, my hormones were a bit slow, I was thin and I had the life milked out of me.

Paul – It is important to feed properly. Silage and other feed is utilised and given.

Then A (CIDRS) was in, boy o boy.

Paul – Heat detection is identified by cow behaviour ie: bulling cows or using heat detection strips. We don’t force heat cycles and cows are only inseminated during heat periods.

I did get in calf, but was milked just about to the end of my life.

More food would have been good, Paul – Again feed management is the key here to maintain body condition score and animal health. then dry off, it’s cold, I am thin.

Paul – Dry off is an important time of the year and usually is a minimum of six to eight weeks this allows for weight to be put on and growth of the calf. Cows are fed straw or hay after dry off to ease transition from a milking cow to a dry cow. It is best interest to increase cow condition for winter. Cows also grow their winter coat during this period

... The break from milking is just eight to 10 weeks, if you are lucky. It’s just a different nightmare life-draining exercise, then another calf is born. This is my life year in, year out. My body has had enough. How can it be my fault I am not carrying a calf this year? ... Considering the life I have had, the cull truck is a good way out of the hell I have been through. The nightmare is coming to an end. I did try my best ...

Paul – This use of emotive language is not helping at all. Not all cows are culled if they are not in-calf. Farms do a thing called carry-over cows, where the cow is taken off the dairy platform, usually to drystock or grazing and is given essentially a holiday until the next season. This article or letter is really not the industry standard. I would be embarrassed if the above was happening on my farm.

Buttercup’s sad and surprised at Daisy’s plight H

ey my name’s Buttercup, and I thought I best write something following the letter from Daisy.

I am part of a herd of 1300 and, although my number is 770, I know my name is Buttercup as my farm hand, Sarah, calls me that every morning.

She’s a bit of a chatterbox Sarah, even insisting on singing to me every morning as she potters around on her quad bike ensuring we are all happily grazing and no-one is looking out of sorts.

Sarah and her team look after us every day from 2am through to 6pm, when they come and check on us last thing at night.

Over calving Sarah and her team check up on us every two to three hours during the night to make sure we are calving without difficulties.

I don’t know what it’s like to be hungry, we’re always full of food – extra baleage, grain in the shed given to us regularly, she even had the cheek to say I looked like I was putting on weight!

I know all my girls in the herd feel the same as me, we are cared for and every day we get to hang out and walk to the milking shed and then go back and hang out in the field.

Sometimes we get sore feet, but Sarah puts new shoes on my feet and helps me feel better with a treatment and keeping me nice and close to the shed so I can still let my milk down and be comfortable.

We see the vets whenever there is a problem. Poor old Muriel had quite an episode with mastitis, but she was treated straight away – Sarah had her sorted. Due to her bad udder formation she was prone to getting an infection.

Sarah popped her in a hospital paddock, tending to her and moving her to the shed to recuperate, she was back on track

Fantastic article and totally correct from our years of dairying and still farming, and also from travelling around our district and seeing first-hand, the way cows are treated on a large majority of

after her treatment was finished.

Next mating she’s going to be pregnant to a bull who can make sure her calf doesn’t have the same issues.

Mating is Sarah’s favourite time of the year. It’s been challenging as it’s been wet and cold, and that does not get me in a good mood.

Sarah is always checking we are well nourished, with plenty of minerals to keep our body cycling as best it can. We had an average return rate of 11 per cent empty. Unfortunately there was a lot of beloved grandmas in my herd, so they weren’t getting in calf as easily with their old age.

If anyone so much as talks to us badly then Sarah’s on their

case. We are indeed the queens of the farm and treated royally.

The farm down the road even has some new-fangled technology that can monitor each cow, so cows’ welfare does not get missed. Big herds with thousands of cows are impeccably well looked after.

Poor old Sarah, she doesn’t have holidays much and says she’s saving so we can have some of the new technology as well.

Sometimes I get a little jealous of my calves, they get heat pads when it’s chilly. I think I may ask Sarah for a heat pad as my rump gets a bit chilly as the winter approaches.

Just like any profession, most of the farmers are great, yes there

is the odd bad egg, but they are the rarity.

Most of them are working their rumps off, just like Sarah, to make sure we are well cared for and healthy.

So Daisy, I’m really sorry to hear of your plight. I wish you could come and join my herd, and, in fact, any of the farms around here, as it’s unfair to see any cow go hungry.

We farmed a jersey cow stud for 35 years and we cared for our cows (160 cows) as they were our bread and butter!

We made a really good living and lifestyle with this number of cows, they have set us up for the rest of our lives and if it wasn’t for these cows we would not have the great life we have today.

They all had names, not num-

bers. They were run as two cows per hectare, not like today when they have three or four-plus cows to the hectare. This is not farming, it is more like factory farming, poor cows!

Over-stocked, under-fed and no shelter in the bad weather as they are ripping all the trees and shelterbelts out to make more room to grow grass! $$$ but they forget about the cows that make

them that money! I really feel for the cows lying in mud on fodder crops as there is nowhere else to lie. No dry spots, only the bale of straw they are meant to eat!

But our so-called animal welfare outfits do nothing, so no point complaining.

Te Brake: Scholarship a ‘huge privilege’ NZ Young Farmers chairman Jason Te Brake is the youngest recipient ever to receive the prestigious Emerging Primary Industries Scholarship.

Announced at Fieldays, the scholarship is a partnership between the Ministry for Primary Industries, in conjunction with AGMARDT and the Te Hono Movement and is a prestigious accolade for young leaders.

Jason will now attend the 2017 Te Hono Movement Stanford Bootcamp and said he was honoured to be one of the youngest to receive the scholarship.

“It’s a huge privilege and the collaboration across the food industry at senior levels that it offers is important in terms of adding value and prosperity to the industry. It’s a fantastic opportunity to spend time at a world-renown university.”

A board member of NZ Young Farmers for four years, and the organisation’s current chairman, Jason has displayed outstanding governance leadership in a period of change.

He has also graduated from the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme and has a chartered accounting and finance background.

NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said the scholarship reinforced the significant role the organisation plays in providing tomorrow’s leaders in the primary industry.

Farm values are likely to keep rising in the next few months, predicts one of the rural property market’s leaders.

PGG Wrightson Real Estate general manager, Peter Newbold said recent statistics from REINZ indicating the market is trending steadily up are borne out by what his regional sales teams across the country are seeing face-to-face with farmers.

“REINZ’s analysis of the rural property market for the quarter to May this year, which was released this week, showed the volume and value of sales is up slightly compared to last year, growing by 5.1 per cent and 2 per cent respectively.

“What we know from discussion with farmers and investors is that as the outlook for dairy becomes more optimistic, all rural categories now have a positive mind-set.

“As that occurs, many farmers will look to increase their holdings. In such a confident market, owners invariably become more bullish, while pressure eases in the lending sector.

“That will lead to a shortage of supply, against growing demand for rural property.

“We have seen that for a few months with viticulture and horticulture land and, to a lesser extent, forestry property and sheep and beef farms.

“In the coming months, while those other categories should remain highly sought after, a similar supply-demand imbalance is also likely to occur across all other rural property sectors, in particular for dairy, which tends to dominate the market.

“Per-hectare values will therefore continue edging up and purchasers in all re-

gions will encounter a shortage of supply of the type of properties they are looking for,” he said.

In which case, spring represents a positive opportunity for any vendors looking to sell, Newbold believes.

“Listings are short, though we know several desirable properties will come to market in the next few months. With the upturn in attitude, buyers will need to prepare for these higher profile properties to be especially hotly contested.

Over 60 farms helped after Kaikoura earthquake A Government-funded initiative to supply workers to farmers affected by the Kaikoura earthquake last November has helped more than 60 farms.

Canterbury-based Agstaff has run the initiative and sourced both paid workers and volunteers and says it will continue to supply people to the region when the programme winds down at the end of the month. Farmers will have to pay though.

Agstaff project manager Trina Moore said over 60 farms had been assisted through 435 team days and 12,920 volunteer and skilled hours.

“We have done the urgent work to keep stock in and keep stock out, but there’s a lot of ongoing recovery work to be done yet and there’s a lot of farms still in need of fencing services.

“Even though the initiative is winding down it has contributed

to urgent repairs and Agstaff are continuing with their own project to get the job done.

“Farmers will now have to pay for labour themselves as it will no longer be funded by the Government, but Agstaff have keen volunteers and will continue appealing for more in the effort to provide farmers with an optimum workforce at an affordable price.”

Fencing staff are still needed.

Moore said Agstaff had been

involved in the project since its inception and had been offering continued support to farmers in Marlborough, Hurunui and Kaikoura.

“Agstaff’s involvement from the beginning has allowed us to see step-by-step how much progress has been made on farm repairs and become familiar with what still needs to be done.

“During this time, we have also been fortunate enough to build

relationships and trust among the local community.

“This is mainly due to the calibre of our skilled workers and the number of volunteers we were able to source throughout the fully-funded government initiative,” Moore said.

“Agstaff holds the districts very close to our heart, and did not want to just walk away after the initiative finished when there are still farms which need repairs.”

Rural mental health doco rolled out The launch of the NZ Young Farmers rural mental health documentary for rural youth last week has seen large numbers of young people view the programme that featured stories of depression and suicide among members.

The 40-minute documentary also featured the moving story of Canterbury member Sam Robinson, from Methven, who bravely shared his story around depression and has had interest from Australia among health networks.

CEO Terry Copeland said the documentary emphasised the organisation’s commitment to lowering New Zealand’s appalling suicide statistics in rural youth, and is being made available for Young Farmers’ clubs to show to their members.

the issue. “It’s clearly been shown that past rural mental health strategies in our youth have not been successful in decreasing statistics and we have to engage more with our youth around the issues they

face if we are to change those grim numbers.”

Last November the Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand called for a new suicide prevention policy, specifically tailored to

address suicide risk in rural men of working age following 2013 data that showed that suicide rates in rural men, aged 15-64, were higher than suicide rates in urban men, and higher than the

national male suicide rate.

The data showed it was often young male farm workers that were most at risk – and that was a trend Mr Copeland had seen in his time at the helm of NZ Young Farmers.

“We still have a very real problem around talking about how we are feeling and yet NZ Young Farmers has an excellent network of clubs that are able to offer an outlet from what can be an isolated existence on farm for our young people, as well as a social forum where they can share some of their frustrations.”

As part of that support, NZ Young Farmers have recently begun GoodYarn farmer wellness workshops around New Zealand for members.

The workshops help participants recognise and respond appropriately to friends, family, farming colleagues or customers suffering from stress or mental illness.

FMA to weigh up using robo advisors

delivered the lion’s share of the company’s earnings, increasing profit to $3.7 million from $3 million a year earlier, even as revenue shrank 11 per cent to $9.2 million.

The retail division’s earnings fell to $700,000 from $900,000 a year earlier, while revenue rose 3.1 per cent to $218.2 million.

The retailer is two years into a five-year transformation programme where it wants to drop low margin business and expand its presence in Auckland.

To help broaden its reach in

the North Island it bought Furniture City last year, however, Boyce said sales at the new acquisition had struggled and in the coming months it will be rebranded under the retailer’s new ‘live better’ brand and store formats.

The board declared a final dividend of 2.5 cents per share, payable on August 11 with an August 4 record date, taking the total return to 3.5 cents, unchanged from a year earlier.

Queenstown first to get 4.5G service Queenstown has become the first town in New Zealand to get a 4.5G mobile data network.

Launched by Spark yesterday, it is expected to deliver speeds for new, high-spec phones up to five times faster than those using the existing 4G network.

Spark chief operating officer Mark Beder said the upgrade put the network ahead of most mobile devices.

But most new high-end phones supported many 4.5G features, enabling “fibre-like” speeds.

“There is now a network that is probably ahead of a lot of those devices at the moment.’’

Covering the central business district, Frankton, Arrowtown and

some areas in between, the upgrade would also improve speeds for all Spark mobile users, and allow residents with low to moderate data usage to consider wireless broadband as an alternative to fixed-line services.

Beder said the technology would also give the resort’s businesses, particularly tourist operators, the opportunity to develop new products, such as live streaming of adventure experiences to customers’ friends and families.

Until now, 4.5G had been deployed only from single towers in the Christchurch CBD and Auckland’s Silverdale.

The resort had been chosen as the first town to get a 4.5G network

because of its rapidly growing population and visitor numbers, and its high data use.

A mobile tower on Peninsula Hill was among its top 10 busiest sites in the country, with about half of the data used for video streaming.

The company was dealing with “insatiable” demand for mobile data across the country, he said. “A lot of what we do in the data world is just keeping up.”

The Queenstown launch was a step towards 5G, which was likely to become commercially available in New Zealand in the early 2020s.

Spark would roll out the technology to 10 more towns in the next 12 months.

Smiths City Group’s annual profit more than halved without the one-off gain from the sale of its Colombo Street store in 2016, although underlying earnings jumped from wider margins in its finance division and a smaller restructuring bill.

Net profit fell to $2.4 million, or 4.5 cents per share, in the 12 months ended April 30, from $5.6 million, or 10.6 cents, a year earlier when it benefited from a $1.8 million gain on a property sale and $2.5 million of tax credits, the Christchurch-based company said in a statement.

Underlying earnings climbed 54 per cent to $2 million as the appliance and furniture retailer faced a smaller restructuring bill which helped offset increasingly tight competition. Revenue increased 2.5 per cent to $227.4 million.

“We need to take care that the exemption limits and conditions strike an appropriate balance between protecting consumers and promoting innovation,” the paper said.

The FMA also wants feedback on whether it should impose an investment limit restricting the value of assets a client can use robo-advice for, although it said it doesn’t currently plan to impose such a restriction.

Other conditions it wants feedback on include whether a provider needs to notify the regulator before offering the service, the types of disclosure required, how providers’ conduct align with the Financial Advisers Code of Conduct, the capability of the tools, and investor safeguards such as client filtering and the systems and controls in place.

The Financial Markets Authority is considering using its powers to fast-track automated personalised financial advice ahead of the expected 2019 schedule in the latest overhaul of legislation governing the sector.

The market watchdog is seeking feedback on proposals to exempt personalised robo-advice, which has been adopted internationally as cheap financial advice using digital channels and relying on software algorithms rather than intensive research. The technology was blocked by legislation introduced in 2008 which dictated that personalised advice could only be given by a “natural person”.

The FMA’s refreshed strategic outlook identified rapid technological change as an emerging theme it needed to be prepared for, and has also been disappointed with the level of personalised financial advice, especially for KiwiSaver members.

Janet is a popular choice for us all. I’m pleased she agreed to stand again. She has an able and impressive committee behind her, who all but one agreed to stand again.

Lorraine Boud organised the entertaining for the evening, with Margaret Twamley giving the Kawai organ a workout. I loved “the Nun’s chorus”.

Then a welcome back to our pioneer duo, Bruce and Lanea, who pop in every now and then with a fresh repertoire, this time showing off their NZ gold guitar trophy, which Lanea picked up in the 40+ section.

The pair were highly commended in the duo section, and Bruce in the traditional 60+ section.

The winners must have been good, because our two have become polished and professional over the years and are a joy to listen to. Come back again.

Lorraine pluck belted out some tongue twisters and humorous prose. (She has a book full of them) “Try it the other way round” (the mind boggles) “Nicholas Knox of Nottingham” and the “Kiwi express” Bruce and I went along to Rod Derretts jazz dance band in Domain Terrace in Christchurch in the late ’50s every Saturday night. The place was always packed, and he recited the above there every now and again.

Mid Canterbury Central Friendship Club Two visitors were welcomed to our Tuesday meeting by President Roger Lake. Bus trip convener Don Hopwood outlined our next trip on July 20 which will tour the Christchurch rebuild followed by lunch and a tour of Rolleston.

Treasurer Carl Ruddenklau mentioned the club membership is now 117 and asked that those with email addresses notify him of it to enable better communication with members.

Our mini speaker was Trevor Tindall whose father was a high country musterer and drover and eventually manager of the 9000 acre Government Valetta Block at Westerfield before it was split up.

Trevor was schooled at Lagmhor Primary and Ashburton Tech. He spent 7 years shepherding and fencing before becoming a shearing contractor with a run of 15 farms. In 1977 he changed to working at the Fairton Freezing Works and also purchased a block of land at

Greenstreet.

Our main speaker was Rob Sharkie, CEO of Ashburton Trading Society. He briefly outlined his work history, starting with Wrightsons in Motueka at age 16yrs, and progressing as a stock agent with that firm in the Marlborough region. In 2011 he moved to ATS in Ashburton and became CEO in 2016.

Rob described the rise of ATS which was set up as a farmers’ co-operative in 1963. It began with 40 shareholders and has now grown to over 3000, of whom 92 per cent are within the Ashburton district. The firm is now looking to expand its business throughout New Zealand.

ATS also has a generous community sponsorship scheme which divides it’s funding between sports, Ag industry and community.

After Barry McLaughlan thanked the speaker, the meeting closed with the National Anthem.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Bernie opened the June meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club.

After the National Anthem had been sung, a visitor was welcomed and birthdays and anniversaries celebrated.

Trips Convenor Avis reminded members of the Christchurch trip in September and the Mid-Winter Luncheon in July.

Heather read out some jokes and stories which were appreciated and the raffles were drawn.

After morning tea the speaker was Leonie Rouse who told of her experiences of growing lavender. Leonie and Trevor live on a 40 acre lifestyle block on the banks of the Rangitata River and enjoy tending to 50 sheep, 25 goats, some cattle, chooks, sheep dogs, and of course their beloved lavender.

The long hot summers are perfect for producing the award winning oils. The business was established about five years ago. They now have approximately 2000 plants and produce four different oils for sale, and use in their range of handmade products.

They also have a display garden with 55 different varieties. As the business is small the flowers are distilled off farm.

When conditions are right, JanuaryFebruary, the lavender is hand harvested, cooled and transported to the distillery in Amberley, this happens 2 to 3 times as different varieties mature.

Some of their plants are 15 years old.

Lavender oil is great for acne, cuts and grazes, also in baths and on pillows.

Leonie was thanked by Karen for her fascinating talk, there was also some products on display.

President Bernie closed the meeting with the Thought for the Month: Friends are the most important ingredient in the recipe of life.

Next meeting is on July 12 at the RSA.

Colin also advised that he will be holding a forum at each general meeting for members to advance any ideas or problems for consideration by the committee.

Peter introduced Hon Jo Goodhew local representative for the National Party.

Jo is retiring from politics but will still be active in the volunteer sector. She briefly outlined recent budget increases to Super from changes to tax thresholds; stressed that we should be pushing the use of the Goldcard; increases in aged care wages; and the introduction of the 0800 number to report elder abuse. As there were no questions from the floor, she then introduced her successor Andrew Falloon. Andrew is from Ashburton and spent his youth here.

After outlining some National Party policies Andrew responded to a number of questions on; euthanasia; water resources in Ashburton; seniors working at the expense of youth; re-introduction of CMT; immigration; Government borrowing; and housing.

Trevor Gamblin passed a vote of thanks and presented Jo with a fruit tray, wishing her well in the future.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Margaret Twamley entertained on the piano while afternoon tea was served.

The meeting concluded 2.45pm.

Team New Zealand’s design staff are already being targeted by rival syndicates as the race heats up to secure key talent off the water.

The 35th America’s Cup match is approaching crunch time this weekend, when racing resumes on the Great Sound following a five-day break.

The four teams sidelined since the end of the Louis Vuitton challenger series are already looking ahead to the next campaign, with the key first step being assembling the right talent.

It is understood Emirates Team New Zealand’s technical director Dan Bernasconi has been approached by several syndicates, including British team Ben Ainslie Racing.

Ainslie, who was dispatched from the challenger semifinals

by Team NZ, was full of praise for the “aggressive” design approach of the Kiwi team.

“They’ve really been very ag-

gressive with their design, from the cyclors, through to their daggerboard design, and how they set up the trim of the boat, and hats off to them, they have really gone for it,” he said in his final press conference earlier this month.

Bernasconi, who holds a PhD in mathematical modelling and aerodynamics, backed up with a Masters from Cambridge University, has been credited as the key driving force behind Team NZ’s radical design and is expected to be high on the wishlist of other teams.

He would not be drawn on whether he had been approached by any other syndicates, but said he would like to keep his design team together at Team NZ, if indeed there is another campaign for the Kiwi team.

“We’re totally focused on this Cup at the moment,” Bernasconi said.

In brief SCG curator to quit Long-serving SCG curator Tom Parker will leave the role three months out from the Ashes.

Parker, who has spent 20 years managing the historic Sydney venue’s turf, will step down at the end of September around the conclusion of the AFL season.

Dan Carter back to terrorise Lions fans If Lions fans thought they had seen the last of Dan Carter, they can think again.

The All Black legend is back in New Zealand to reminisce on his masterclass performance against the Lions in 2005. He will be speaking to fans at the Queens Wharf fanzone ahead of Saturday’s test between the tourists and the All Blacks at Eden Park.

Carter scored 33 points in the second test at Wellington as the All Blacks dominated the Lions, winning 48-18.

He will be talking to TV presenter James McOnie before a replay of the game is shown to

the crowd at the fanzone.

Queens Wharf will be Auckland’s entertainment hub while the Lions are in the city.

It will open at 3pm today, with a weekend-long programme of entrainment, activities and live plus classic match screenings.

TV reporter and former Black Fern Melodie Robinson will host Thursday evening’s entertainment, chatting to Provincial Barbarians players Bryn Gatland and Sam Anderson-Heather. Those in attendance will be hoping Bryn might let some secrets slip about the visitors, given his dad Warren

The first test will be screened live at Queens Wharf.

A few All Blacks will visit the Queens Wharf fanzone on Friday to catch a touch rugby tournament involving some of the country’s most talented young rugby players.

Last Friday Mid Canterbury’s best intermediate grade basketballers were acknowledged in the final matches of the season.

In total 24 teams took part, with 15 teams contesting the boys’ grade and nine contesting the

girls’ grade. A strong crowd had gathered to watch the two finals play out at the Oxford Street Basketball Stadium, with the first final being the girls.

Robbie’s Muppets took a comfortable victory against the Mt Hutt Red Team, taking a 14-8 halftime lead and turning it in to a 40-

18 point victory.

In the boys’ final, a much closer game played out, with the Brick Layers beating St Joe’s Flash 5452.

Players from contributing schools around the area included Borough School, Hinds School, Mt Somers/Springburn

School, Mt Hutt College (Year 7 & 8), Longbeach School, Wakanui School, St Joseph’s School, Dorie School, Tinwald School, Ashburton Christian School and Ashburton Intermediate.

The next grade of basketball to start-up will be the Miniball competition for Years 3 to 6 in August.

Now the weather is closing in on embattled America’s Cup defenders Oracle. The news keeps getting worse for Oracle Team USA – the wind forecasts are strongly in Team New Zealand’s favour when racing resumes on Sunday morning. NZME’s America’s Cup sailing professor Mark Orams says that all weather models are predicting winds under 14 knots, with some as low as seven, for Sunday and beyond. McCartney still on course for world champs Top pole vaulter Eliza McCartney remains on course for the world athletics championships after having her troubling Achilles tendon assessed in Germany yesterday.

The Rio Olympic bronze medallist has had soreness in her lower right leg and her last two performances in the Diamond League, in Oslo and Stockholm, have been below par.

But the scan in Cologne diagnosed inflammation but importantly no tear, allaying any fears that the 20-year-old has a major injury setback.

“I had to deal with this for a good chunk of the European season last season as well,” McCartney said yesterday.

“We weren’t sure what was going on but I was able to do rehab, carry on and compete in Rio. The ultra sound today gives us a better idea of what is going on.”

McCartney will lay off the leaping for a few days but still maintain her training routines in other respects, so it’s business as usual.

The AFL Players Association is backing a new phone app that aims to help young people take better care of their mental health.

Carlton onballer Ed Curnow and North Melbourne ruck-forward Majak Daw were at the launch of the MindMax programme in Melbourne. Mental health has become a major issue among elite sportspeople, with Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo having a short break a few weeks ago as he struggled with depression. – AAP

Eliza McCartney “It is a bit inflamed and the tendon will stay pretty grumpy if I don’t stay off it.

“So I need to rest it, and strengthen it again. I managed to get rid of it quite well last year but the intensity has stepped up so it will take a bit of effort to get rid of it again.

“But because we have more of an understanding of it, it will be easier to plan the rehab for the fu-

ture.” McCartney acknowledged that historically she has been “pretty lucky” with injuries.

“I’ve had a few, but fortunately they haven’t kept me out of the sport for too long and haven’t required surgery.

“I do get injured quite often but they’re all things we’re able to deal with.”

Pole vault is a sport with a range of complex individual com-

ponents, so there’s no shortage of work-ons for McCartney and her coach Jeremy McColl.

“You don’t have to be running all the time to be training. There’s certainly other things we can do and it doesn’t mean training falters at all.

“I’m still training really hard – just not doing things that cause any pain. I’m still able to get lots done.”

McCartney’s philosophy is simple: “It could be a lot worse.

At least it’s early in the European season. There’s still a month and a half to the world champs so there’s plenty of time to sort things out.

“I guess if I look at it overall I’m still only 20, hopefully I’ve got a long career ahead of me and it’s not the end of the world whatsoever. It’ll all work out in the end.”

McCartney is planning to compete at the London Diamond League meeting on July 9 and then onto the world championships, also in London in early August.

Saturday’s first Test will played at the Auckland venue where the back-to-back world champions have won 37 successive Tests since 1994. Last Friday’s 78-0 romp against Samoa continued a streak which eclipses the next best run by a nation at a home venue – England’s 22-match run at Twickenham until 2003. The All Blacks have lost just twice in their last 57 Tests at a ground where the Lions must play twice, returning on July 8 for the third Test.

Lions wary about spying threat The British and Irish Lions have asked their security team to sweep their hotel rooms for listening devices in a bid to eradicate the risk of espionage ahead of the first Test against New Zealand on Saturday, The Talk of Rugby can reveal.

The regular searches of the Lions team rooms for any signs of bugging devices are being carried out by a four-man team from the security firm Veritas, who worked with the Lions on the 2009 and 2013 tours of South Africa and Australia.

“We have a security team who are very experienced in this,” said John Feehan, the Lions chief executive.

“They are experts in electronic surveillance to ensure that we are not being looked at or listened to.

“The team room for example is swept regularly and no-one is allowed in there unless they are part of the squad and if there is any suspicion at all they will do another sweep of the room.

“Nothing is perfect in this life and if someone is determined enough they probably will get something but all we can do is try to ensure that that they don’t. We have a (security) team in there

and they are good at doing their job.” There is no suggestion that the All Blacks would be involved in such underhand tactics.

The Lions however are wise not to want to take any chances after the row that erupted between New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions in August last year when a listening device was located in a room at a hotel the All Blacks were staying at in Sydney last year ahead of their Bledisloe Cup match.

Details of the bug emerged on the day of the match, causing anger in the Australian camp that they might have been involved.

A subsequent police investigation led to Adrian Gard, 51, one of the All Blacks’ security guards, being charged with one count of false misrepresentation resulting in a police investigation in February.

Accusations of spying between international teams is as old as the hills.

At the 2015 World Cup England were wrongly accused of spying on pool rivals Australia, while the 2005 Lions squad on their tour of New Zealand were adamant that their line-out codes had been cracked going into the first Test and they changed their

By Gregor Paul It’s perhaps sad, weird, maybe a little demoralising but definitely true that test football – certainly this first Lions test at Eden Park – so often swings on the performance of the referee.

Both the Lions and All Blacks have spent hours of their respective lives preparing for this game and yet their fate rests so heavily it would seem on the performance of one man.

Jaco Peyper is now match referee and keeper of dreams. One mistake from him on Saturday night and careers go on the line for those directly affected.

He’s an experienced referee so he knows all this. It’s not new. But what perhaps is shaping as unusual is the intensity of the scrutiny being placed on him pre game.

Lions coach Warren Gatland has managed to air publicly his concerns about what he sees as illegal blocking. He reckons it has been happening all tour - that every team the Lions have played are guilty of running interference.

He’s got a point. It has happened - New Zealand teams on this tour have tried to protect the catcher taking the high ball, or held their line a little too fiercely when the ball has been put in behind them and Lions players are trying to get after it.

So now of course Peyper and his match officials on Saturday

Jaco Peyper night are going to be looking for it and already they are under pressure to find it. They will be under even more pressure to penalise it especially when the thousands of Lions fans call for it every time an All Black makes a successful catch.

But as much as it was an astute move by Gatland to bring up his concerns about blocking, so too was it a risk. The All Blacks will be wary of giving Peyper any reason to penalise them for blocking and they know they don’t need to do it.

Their aerial game hasn’t relied on it before and shouldn’t need to now.

The bigger concern for Gatland is that he has raised the stakes because if he wants referees to go looking into micro details then it’s best only to do that from a position of absolute purity.

The Lions can’t pretend they are squeaky clean on this front.

They run plenty of interference themselves - look what happened

to Nehe Milner-Skudder after he kicked through for Liam Messam’s try for the Maori in Rotorua.

He’s blocked by the retreating defence. Then there is this whole business of the Lions linesepeed.

Defence coach Andy Farrell says his troops spring into action on the b of the bang. Which is mostly true. But it’s not when they charge that is the issue, it is from where.

He can’t see it because he’s the Lions defence coach, but all tour the Lions have set their defensive line in front of the hind feet.

Maybe by just a quarter metre, sometimes a half but enough to make their defence more effective.

The Lions have also been fortunate to avoid more yellow cards for high tackles. Dan Biggar was lucky to escape one in Hamilton and CJ Stander should have had at least 10 minutes in the bin against the Blues for taking Steven Luatua around the chin.

The All Blacks will possible make these very points to Peyper privately ahead of the game. But maybe they won’t bother because usually it is best to simply trust the referee to do his job and not heap too much pressure on him.

Ask him to look too hard at one thing and he’ll miss plenty of others. And besides teams that worry too much about what their opponents are supposedly getting away with are probably not focusing enough on their own game.

Lions’ pack to face tough test against All Blacks

By Patrick McKendry The Lions’ trip up State Highway 1 would have been a good one on Tuesday night after their win over the Chiefs. There’s nothing like a victory, and a convincing one at that, to bring a team closer.

The celebrations started in the Waikato Stadium changing rooms with a sing-song before the bus was boarded.

The time for words, and predictions, is nearly over, as the Lions prepare to test themselves against the All Blacks, and it is their top team’s pack – dominant against the Crusaders and NZ Maori – which will receive perhaps the biggest examination.

If Warren Gatland’s men can’t dominate here, they have little chance of winning. The road to their victories over the Crusaders, Maori and Chiefs were paved by their forwards’ set piece excellence, although they wobbled in Christchurch at times against what was effectively an All Black front five often bemused by the rulings of French referee Mathieu Raynal.

Scrum coach Graham Rountree yesterday spoke of the lessons learned in that 12-3 win in their third game of the tour, one which effectively turned their trip around after their poor start and which set their game plan template.

He said he has the highest respect for the All Blacks’ set piece, and their scrum coach Mike Cron, but believes his players

have put in the required work and are peaking at the right time.

“Best in the world, consistently – I think they’ve proven that over two World Cups,” former England prop Rountree said of the All Blacks. “They’re very efficient, [with an] excellent lineout defence, particularly with Kieran Read in the mix. And the scrum, my department - they’ve been leading the charge for quite a long time now. They’re exceptionally well coached by Mike Cron; an honest team, an efficient, honest forward pack.

“We’ve got our hands full, but luckily we’ve had some good challenges over the last two weeks. I’m really happy with how the boys have adapted. You saw the challenges we had at scrum time in Otago, on a couple of occasions – against the Crusaders as well, against an All Blacks front five, basically.

“But the guys have learned and they’re adapting well. Those games, those encounters, those challenges are what we need to learn and be able to step up a gear for this pack at the weekend which as I’ve said I think is the best in the world.

“They’re in good nick. We have trained them hard and fast, which you have to do to play the All Blacks. The ball is on the field for a long time, it’s a quick game so we’ve trained them exceptionally hard. We’ve put them under a lot of stress and they’re fit and we’ve done pretty well injurywise so far.”

“This is my first full season as a trainer,” Verlinden said. “The horse was with Steve Tyler and

I was his track rider at the time.

“He seems to like the environment here and we can work him on the farm and at the beach to keep him happy.”

Shantav was successful on his home track last time out and he will attempt consecutive wins when he steps out in the Easy Made Marmalade Handicap at Oamaru today. He will be ridden by Courtney Barnes.

“He’s working and eating well,” Verlinden said. “We can’t race him too often as he goes off his feed so we have to walk a fine line, take it a race at a time.”

A son of Tavistock, he began life with Pukekohe trainer Richard Collett before transferring south to Tyler and now to Verlinden’s stable.

“I’ve been around horses for-

ever and had trekking stables in Queenstown and here,” she said.

“I rode for Paul Richards when he was down here and then as a freelance track rider before getting my licence.

Goldsbury, who can comfortably ride at 50kg, has since added a further 51 winners to her tally.

Balius has claimed a maiden metropolitan win with a strong finish at the mid- week Canterbury meeting. In his second Sydney start, the gelding was patiently ridden in the pack by leading apprentice Andrew Adkins before surging clear of Mutarakem ($4.40) to win Wednesday’s 1550m-handicap by half a length.

Balius came to town off a close third at Hawkesbury, his home track, on June 11. “I knew he’d take some beating,” trainer Garry Neale said.

Back with a win Dwayne Dunn has returned to the saddle with a winner at Bendigo after an enforced winter break.

Dunn steered Takemehomemister to victory in Wednesday’s 2YO Handicap (1100m), his first race ride since May 27. “It’s my first ride for three weeks. I haven’t been on a horse,” Dunn said.

Off to Randwick Albury trainer Graham Hulm is hopeful Lord Von Costa will justify a rare trip to Sydney when he lines up in the Winter Dash at Randwick.

The four-year-old will be having his first start since he finished second to Santa Ana Lane in the Wagga Town Plate on May 4. He will get his preferred wet ground in Saturday’s 1200m-sprint in which he will start from barrier four.

Sport Pulver staying put Bill Pulver will remain as Australian Rugby Union chief but the identity of which Australian franchise will be cut from Super Rugby remains a mystery following an emergency general meeting at ARU headquarters in Sydney. Pulver’s position had been under threat after the Victorian Rugby Union and Rugby Union Players’ Association called for the meeting after three months of uncertainty for players and staff at the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels. ARU chairman Cameron Clyne said Pulver was not challenged at Tuesday’s “orderly” three-hour meeting.

It will be an intense night of netball as sides vie to finish first or earn the chance to fight for promotion in the final week of this round of Mid Canterbury’s premier netball competition.

In the top grade, it will be a tight finish between Ashburton College and Celtic, with only one point separating the two sides.

Ash Coll will be taking on third-placed United in what will

be a tough match for the undefeated side.

Celtic will be hoping to put the pressure on as they face last-placed Southern, who are yet to win a match in this round of the competition and already know they will be playing in the promotion/relegation match next Tuesday.

In the final match of the top grade, fifth-placed defending champions Methven will take on fourth-placed Hampstead in a dead-rubber.

In the grade below, three teams have the potential finish first, and contest next week’s promotion/relegation match against Southern.

All teams have the potential to pick up the full four points, with Rakaia A facing last-placed Southern B, while Hampstead B will play fourth-placed Ash Coll B. The final match will be an inter-club derby, with Celtic B taking on Celtic C. The team that finishes last

place will contest a promotion/ relegation playoff on Tuesday night also, against the winners of the senior grade.

Murray and his managers declined to comment on a planned donation, which could have topped $440,000 had he won the Wimbledon warmup for the sixth straight

year. This is nothing new for Murray, who donated £73,000 in Queen’s winnings in 2013 to the Royal Marsden Centre, where his Davis Cup doubles partner, Ross Hutchins, was treated successfully for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
