Ashburton College ball and after-ball attendees are being commended by police, ball organisers and supervisors for their good behaviour at the weekend.

The chilly temperatures failed to deter students from dressing to the nines and partying the night away on Friday.

Hundreds of students descended on the Hotel Ashburton, which was decked out with Greek decorations to fit this year’s theme, A Night in Olympus.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis of Ashbur-

ton, said everything went off without a hitch and police were not called to any ball-related incidents.

“There was no involvement from us at all,” he said. “That’s got to be good.”

Head of the student ball committee Caitlin Johnstone was delighted with the event and pleased with how both the ball and after-ball went.

“It was awesome, I had such a good time,” she said.

Just over 400 tickets were sold to the ball and 250 to the after-ball but Miss Johnstone said she was aware of a few people who couldn’t get in due to the snow.

That was as much impact as the chilly weather had though and the snow didn’t hamper the festivities, she said.

“It was a bit of a time-push in the end but other than that, it was good.”

Ashburton Community and Alcohol Drug Service general manager Chris Clark helped to oversee the after-ball function and agreed that the behavior of attendees was good.

“It all went to plan and the young people enjoyed themselves and everybody got home safely.

“We had lots of parents’ support and it was really good.”

Italy dishes up record longest pizza Italy has beaten the world record for the longest ever pizza, serving up a sizzling margherita over one and a half kilometres long at Milan’s 2015 Expo.

Guinness World Records judge Lorenzo Veltri at the weekend handed Italy the crown for a 1595.45 metre long masterpiece made with 1500 kilos of tomatoes, over one and a half tonnes of mozzarella and a river of extra virgin olive oil. The 80 chefs from all over Italy who took part in the creation snatched the title from Spain, which had held the record with a pizza 1141.5 metres long.

Packer snapped with Carey Billionaire James Packer is dating US singer Mariah Carey, according to a celebrity gossip website. TMZ has posted a photo of a smiling Packer and Carey holding hands and says the picture was taken in Capri, Italy, on Friday. The website says the couple are staying on the gambling mogul’s yacht and are enjoying an “extended vacation”.

Dalai Lama turning 80 The Dalai Lama will mark his official 80th birthday with prayers and celebrations in his hometown-in-exile. The Nobel laureate, who has spent decades lobbying for greater Tibetan autonomy will be in the United States when he turns 80 on July 6. However today is his official birthday according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, and he will celebrate with fans and followers in Dharamsala. The Dalai Lama will address Tibetan exiles and Indian dignitaries in the north Indian hill town where he has lived since fleeing Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule. The event will include traditional dancing and a special long life prayer for the Buddhist spiritual leader, who shows no sign of slowing down. Although he has officially given up his political role, the Dalai Lama maintains a hectic schedule of foreign travel and is due to visit Britain this month before travelling on to the United States. But his retirement from politics in 2011 was a reminder to exiled Tibetans that the man who remains the universally recognised face of the movement will not be around forever. “The two big questions are what will happen after he’s gone and whether Tibetans inside and outside China will look to his replacement in the same way,” said Jayadeva Ranade, president of the Centre for China Analysis and Strategy in New Delhi.

Today’s ceremony in Dharamsala - home to thousands of Tibetan refugees - will be a time for celebration, but also for reflection on the Dalai Lama’s push for greater autonomy for Tibet under Chinese rule. The elderly monk’s promotion of nonviolence along with his ready laugh have made him a global peace icon.

Hitler artworks sell in Germany Pictures presumed to have been the work of a young Adolf Hitler have been sold at auction in Nuremberg for a total of 391,000 euros ($NZ643,000). Fourteen watercolour paintings and drawings were put up for sale - the highest price was paid for a watercolour of Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, which went to a buyer from China for 100,000 euros. A still life picture of a bouquet of carnations changed hands for 73,000 euros. All the offered works were sold in the auction - among them views of Vienna and Prague, and a female nude. The works were dated between 1904 and 1922 - long before Adolf Hitler and the Nazis took power in Germany. Hitler’s artistic endeavours are widely considered to be of limited merit, but their sale - though controversial - continues to fetch thousands of euros at auction houses each year.

In 2014, a Hitler watercolour depicting the town hall of Munich allegedly fetched 130,000 euros after the same auction house sold it to an anonymous buyer from the Middle East.

Bond ensemble movie?

Film bosses have approached five former James Bond stars in attempt to bring them together for an ensemble action movie.

Former 007 actor Sir Roger Moore has revealed that movie chiefs are trying to line him up alongside 84-year-old Sir Sean Connery, George Lazenby, 75, Timothy Dalton, 71 and 62-year-old Pierce Brosnan.

Moore insists he is keen to sign up, but Connery is proving more difficult to get on board. “I’d be up for (the movie). But Sean balked at the idea as I don’t think he wants to be associated with Bond any more. But I’d need about 10 stunt doubles,” Moore said. The proposed movie is believed to boast a similar format to action film franchise The Expendables, which has featured a host of veteran Hollywood hardmen including Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fun run raises $4500

Hundreds of people took off in the Run for the Hills fun run/walk yesterday morning.

Over 300 people braved frosty conditions and flocked to the Ashburton Domain yesterday, in an effort to raise money for injured Ashburton woman Carol Hill.

Mrs Hill was badly injured while holidaying on the Greek island of Santorini with hus-

band Barrie earlier this month.

She was struck by a motorbike and airlifted to Athens where she remains in hospital.

A family friend of the couple, Kevin Opele, organised a fundraising event which took place yesterday, as a way to help out with the significant bills that have come about as a result of Mrs Hill’s injuries.

Last week Mr Opele told the Guardian that while the Hills had medical insurance, he knew there would be further costs to be covered.

Insurance would eventually cover many of the costs around Mrs Hill’s treatment and Mr Hill’s support, Mr Opele said, but their sons Shane and Lance have to bear the cost of flying

Altogether 309 people turned out to the Run for the Hills fun run/walk, raising a whopping $4500.

Mr Opele said not only did the amount of people exceed his expectations, the money raised blew him away.

“Many people paid more than

the $5 entry fee,” he said.

“There was even a couple of $100 bills thrown in there.”

The event had to delay its start time due to the number of people who came along and wanted to sign up.

Mr Opele has also set up an ANZ account and donations can be made to 01-0834-016440746.

Disgruntled farmers leaving ATS

A number of disgruntled farmers have left ATS in favour of opposition Farmlands in the past year because of better discounts and frustration at the co-op’s emphasis on the dairy market.

A source within Farmlands, who did not want to be named, confirmed to the Guardian that they had seen a “significant increase” in ATS shareholders buying from the opposition.

ATS shareholders the Guardian contacted, who also did not want to be named, said they had reluctantly moved their spend to Farmlands or PGG Wrightson because they believed ATS had moved away from its core faming base and was not offering as much discount as other rural supply stores.

A fifth generation farmer said ATS was “too busy chasing the dairy farmers” and he was “sick of it”.

“The dairy farmer was more important than the fella that had been here for five generations. You only have to look at the ATS brochures in the mail and three-quarters of it will be about dairy farming. And who is doing the spending right now? It’s your rank and file general

farmer.” He alleged ATS was not following the co-operative ethic.

“The word co-op means the wee guy helps the big guy and the big guy helps the wee farmer and they all get the same prices, but that’s not happening.”

The farmer said ATS should merge with Farmlands.

“People like to be loyal but what’s the point of being loyal if someone is shafting you. Farmlands is the best of a bad bunch. ATS has lost its base.”

He had spoken to ATS about his concerns over several years, including his frustration at lower fuel discounts offered than the opposition, but felt they weren’t listening.

However ATS chairman Phil McKendry said farmers should check back with ATS regularly as currently they had the second best fuel price in the country.

Earlier this week Mr McKendry did not rule out merging with Farmlands but said farmers should voice their concerns at the November AGM. ATS deputy chairman Ian Mackenzie said he had received no complaints from shareholders. He also advised farmers to bring any issues to the AGM.

Mt Hutt Ski Area’s 2015 ski season is off to a great start, with ski area manager James McKenzie dubbing the past weekend “super”.

While the mountain opening was pushed back due to strong winds last weekend, this weekend was a different story.

“Last weekend was quite a limited opening, we only had the quad open on Saturday and Sunday was pretty limited off the summit,” Mr McKenzie said.

“This weekend has seen a

massive surge in business and visitors and guests and all that stuff, so that’s cool.”

Mr McKenzie said even with the huge dumping of snow, there had been no major issues and somewhat surprisingly there was no trouble with the access road.

“The biggest downer from the 1.2 metres of snow was that it rained,” he said.

“We lost a lot of snow through wind and rain but we got so much snow that it was like a 60cm snow storm in the end, in terms of what it left us with.”

The ski area is claiming a

current maximum depth of 1.6m but that could increase if the snow that is forecast comes to fruition.

The “super weekend” is not just great for Mt Hutt, Mr McKenzie said, but also for the Methven community. He said history dictates a strong start can make for a great season, and that’s something the ski area desperately needs.

“We want a reasonably good positive year for Mt Hutt and we do need one because it’s been a tough few years for us.

I think really the last great year we had was 2010, so it’s a long time ago.”

Deal struck over water

When it asked the Ashburton District Council for $190,000, the Lake Hood Extension Trust was essentially asking for some of its own money back, says trust chairman Graeme Kennedy.

Last year the council and the trust signed a deal that would see all properties at the lake and those built in the future in the lake extension, connected to the Ashburton town water supply.

Originally the lake settlement had its own bore, but with more than 300 houses likely to come on stream as part of the lake extension, an enhanced supply was needed. The trust had two choices – commission its own

supply or hook into the town supply.

The town supply option was the best deal but came with a price tag for the trust that was significantly higher than doing the job itself.

It was a win for both parties as residents would gain a good quality, reliable water supply, while the council would not have another small water supply added to its portfolio. The council will save $50,000 a year through not having to maintain the lake’s water supply.

As part of that deal, however, the trust wanted the council to pay $190,000 as compensation for taking the more expensive deal. The $190,000 it asked for was well below the differ-

ence between the two schemes, Mr Kennedy said, but the trust was looking for a fair deal not a cheap deal.

“We’re happy to pay our way but $135,000 of this we’ve already paid, it’s been the residents’ contributions to the initial system.”

Effectively, the trust was asking for only an extra $55,000, he said.

For the council, it was a better deal to have the lake settlement as part of the town supply rather than to have another small water supply on its books, council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said.

“We’ve told them the current supply is not sufficient to meet their needs. There was some

discussion around providing an upgraded supply for the existing and the new area but the other option was to hook up to the Tinwald supply. That reduces the liability and it reduces the risk.”

The $135,000 had accumulated over several years, paid

by Lake Hood residents as part of their rates. It was paid into a reserve account as depreciation on their water asset, Mr Guthrie said.

The committee voted to give the trust $135,000 from the Lake Hood water supply reserve account and to pay the remaining $50,000 in $10,000 instalments over 10 years. The deal goes to next week’s council meeting for sign-off.

The Methven fire brigade attended two call outs on Saturday, one to fallen power lines and the other to a burning power pole. The brigade then attended another burning power pole on Sunday lunchtime on Rakaia Barhill Methven Road.

Pedestrian hit by bus A pedestrian was taken to hospital in a serious condition after he was hit by a bus in Auckland yesterday. Inspector Chris Tate said a 53-year-old man was hit by a bus on Franklin Road, in Ponsonby, just after 8am yesterday. A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the man was transported to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries. Mr Tate said no further details were available at this time.

Dead man named Police have named the man who was found dead in his Mt Roskill flat on Saturday. He was 38-yearold David Fotu. Police said they were satisfied the circumstances of Mr Fotu’s death were not suspicious. The matter has now been referred to the Coroner.

$1m richer

Govt open to outsourcing social services Private companies like the prison-operator Serco could be used to deliver social services.

Social Development Minister Anne Tolley said she would be open to private operators being contracted to provide more social services.

“It would have to be better ... but, yes, I would be open to that.

We would want to trial it and make sure it works,” Ms Tolley told TVNZ’s Q+A programme.

British prison operator Serco has been awarded a contract to run the new $270 million jail for 960 men at Wiri in South Auckland. It also operates Mt Eden Prison in Auckland.

“I was very involved in the development of the Wiri contract ... that is not just running a facility, that is delivering 10 per cent better than the public service in rehabilitation.

“That’s going to make an enormous difference to the families of prisoners. If private enterprise can deliver those sorts of results, I wouldn’t hesitate to use them.”

Labour has attacked the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) for paying large salaries and a big increase in spending on management courses.

Ms Tolley said a greater problem for the Government - and why it was changing the way social services are delivered - is that there was a problem in measuring results from investment.

Top snow conditions The Snow Farm near Cardrona opened on Saturday with the best snow conditions in at least five years, general manager Andy Pohl said. “I think it’s one for the record books actually. We can’t get over how good the skiing is.”

All of the Snow Farm’s 55km of cross-country skiing trails were open, with a base of at least 20cm to 30cm of snow, Mr Pohl said. “It’s like mid-season skiing conditions.”

Anjalee settling in at Auckland Zoo

Bay of Plenty Maori say they have been offered thousands of dollars to withdraw their opposition to leaving the Rena on Astrolabe Reef. Hapu Patuwai rejected an offer of $750,000 from the owners of the shipwreck Rena, Daina Shipping Company. Ngai Te Rangi iwi, Te Runanga o Ngati Awa and Nga Potiki a Tamapahore also said they have turned down offers but Rotorua-based Te Arawa confirmed it had come to an agreement with the shipping company.

Auckland Zoo’s newest and heaviest addition has arrived at last - the nearly 9-year-old elephant Anjalee has flown in from the tropics and is settling in to a slightly colder climate.

The 1.7 tonne female Asian elephant was brought from Sri Lanka to New Zealand, via Niue for a three-month quarantine, to keep the zoo’s 32-year-old female elephant Burma company.

Burma had been lonely since her friend Kashin died in 2009.

It wasn’t a straightforward trip for the young orphan, who stands 2m tall - she was flown from Colombo to Auckland

in March on a freight plane, before being transferred to a New Zealand Defence Force C-130 Hercules and flown to Niue, a 30-plus hour flight, for quarantine and testing to confirm she was disease-free.

In Niue, she spent a lot of time chasing chickens around her enclosure.

She arrived at her new home last night, but will be quarantined there for another week.

Once she’s settled in to her restricted barn and paddock area (zoo staff are unable to give a timeframe for this as it’ll depend on how fast she takes a liking to her new home), zoo

visitors will be able to see her in all her glory - but Anjalee will have to wait 21 days before she and Burma can take a stroll outside of their enclosure for a meet and greet with the rest of the zoo’s occupants.

Anjalee was born on August 23, 2009 at Sri Lanka’s Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and her name means ‘gracious gift’.

The project to bring her to New Zealand was approved in 2011 by Auckland Council, which has put $3.2 million towards it, at no extra cost to ratepayers.

Holidays ‘frustrating’

As Mid Canterbury families head for warmer climates, school principals are warning about the effects of mid-term holidays on children’s education.

With winter kicking into full swing, many families look to sunnier shores in Australia or the Pacific for some rest and relaxation.

However, local principals say taking children out of class during the school term can mean a lot of pressure to catch up when they return.

Mount Somers Springburn school principal Brent Gray said it was a “frustrating” issue at the school every year.

“There’s expectations around attendance from the ministry, and we often put it in our newsletter and we often reiterate it with parents, but when it comes down to it they’re taking them anyway,” he said.

Mr Gray said such absences were recorded in the school’s attendance system as ‘explained but unjustified’.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said he could understand why parents chose

to go on holiday outside of the school holidays as it was cheaper, but it did mean students had to work harder to catch up on school work.

The Ministry of Education has also weighed in, saying family holidays were not a good reason for missing school.

Head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said schools and parents were legally responsible for ensuring students attend school regularly.

“Each school will have their own attendance management plan which outlines how the school will monitor and man-

age attendance,” she said.

Any penny pinching due to the dairy downturn has not extended to family holidays, according to an Ashburton travel agent.

Ashburton Flight Centre team leader Jaime Deavoll said farmers were still booking holidays, but they were being more careful with how they spent their money.

“It’s certainly affected what they’re spending,” she said.

“Everyone’s very aware of it but it’s not stopping them from going anywhere.”

Weather fails to dampen hunters’ spirits

While snow and rain enveloped Mid Canterbury and most of the South Island at the weekend, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the competitors entered in the Mid Canterbury Hunting Competition.

Over 260 people took part in the annual event, up from 225 last year.

Dwayne Young claimed the much sought-after crown for heaviest boar, his sizable pig weighing in at 90.2kg.

His kill was tracked down in Millers Flat, down in inland Otago.

“We had a red stag lined up but we couldn’t get to it [because] of the snow,” nephew Quentin Young said.

Another keen hunter, Justin Campbell, said he had a good weekend away but the snow made things difficult.

“The snow buggered things up a bit,” he said.

“We couldn’t access our 4WD tracks… so we walked and put chains on.”

The competition, in its eighth year, has grown in size with hunters trekking all over the South Island to bring their game back to the Hotel Ashburton carpark by yesterday’s 2.30pm deadline.

Red stag, tahr, wallabies and boar were among the wild animals hunters were given three days to kill and bring back to Ashburton.

One of the organisers, Richard Clucas, said considering the weather, there were a good number of animals weighed in yesterday.

“We got a lot more than we expected,” he said.

In the women’s section Annie Hunt-Cain took out the heaviest stag (97.4kg) and the heaviest tahr (35.4kg) while Sally Coster had the heaviest boar (62kg).

Aside from the weigh-in and the coveted prizes that were handed out, there was also food on hand and running races for children and adults.

The children raced around a track in the hotel carpark while carrying a hare, and the adults had to lug a pig around their course.

Flooding causes havoc Hundreds of Whanganui residents are facing a third anxious night away from their homes after the worst flooding the region has ever seen.

More than 400 people were evacuated from flood-hit homes in lower North Island towns across Taranaki, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Rangitikei and Whanganui at the weekend.

Flooding caused road and bridge closures, cut power to homes and forced people across the regions to spend the night in emergency accommodation or with friends and family.

Nearly 250 Whanganui residents were officially evacuated and it was believed at least 150 more had self-evacuated following rising floodwaters on Saturday.

Civil Defence said it was possible some Whanganui homes would remain inaccessible until tomorrow.

The flooding, described as a one in 85-year event, is the worst ever recorded in Whanganui - worse even than the lower North Island flooding of 2004, which led to more than $140 million in insurance claim payouts.

Insurance Council chief executive Tim Grafton said it was too early to tell if the weekend’s flooding would top that, but the cost would run to the millions of dollars.

“We don’t have all the claims in yet but it will be significant, no doubt about that.”

The heartbreak for many residents began after the Whanganui River breached its banks about midnight on Saturday, spilling floodwaters into central Whanganui.

The river then continued to rise to record-breaking levels, with the regional council recording a massive flow of 4740cu m per second at the town bridge at 3am yesterday higher than the previous record of 4680cu m in 1904.

The river level peaked at 9.1m, significantly higher than the 7m peak the river usually reaches, even at very high spring tides.

Gene Toyne, her husband Chris and their two dogs, who live in a low-lying area near Whanganui Airport, left their property on Saturday afternoon.

Mrs Toyne said they woke early that morning to find floodwaters lapping around their house, and did all they could to safeguard their property.

Warmer homes, happier homes

Kim Hamilton’s tenants won’t have to worry about their home being cold and draughty this winter.

Mrs Hamilton’s Rakaia property – which houses four tenants – is one of 16 rentals to be insulated by a Canterbury based community trust.

The Community Energy Action Charitable Trust has spent the last year insulating 300 homes all over Canterbury, in an effort to provide a warmer, healthier home for tenants.

Mrs Hamilton said her tenants had mentioned that they felt their home was cold, and so she decided to take action. “[They] had complained it was cold and I knew the insulation in the roof had condensed and there wasn’t any underfloor insulation and it’s a 1950s house,” she said.

As there were two children in the house it really bothered her that it wasn’t warm enough.

While the home had a heat-pump and thick carpet with underlay, the lack of insulation meant the house was hard to heat.

So after hearing the trust were insulating homes in the district, she reached out to them.

The trust said they could help out if the tenants had a community services card, and they did. “That worked out great, it wasn’t at any cost to us except for a donation,” Mrs Hamilton said.

Ensuring rentals had adequate insulation is something Mrs Hamilton said she would suggest to other landlords around the district, and the help provided by the trust made it that much more feasible.

“I don’t know what most other landlords’ situation is, but having a rental property you’re not making big bucks – it’s quite a lot of work.

“If the community trust isn’t available it is quite difficult for a landlord to say, ‘oh I will put out $5000 in one hit for insulation’.”

Having a warmer, drier home was not only beneficial for the tenants but for landlords too, she said.

“If you have a warmer house and a good healthy home for your tenants they are going to stay there longer and be happier and respect the place.”

Transforming local healthcare services

Ashburton will soon have its own integrated health alliance.

Healthcare providers, leaders and professionals from within the district are getting together next month to take part in a workshop aiming to progress the establishment of a local Service Level Alliance (SLA).

The SLA will be a part of the Canterbury Clinical Network, a collective alliance of healthcare leaders, professionals, providers and consumers helping to guide the transformation of healthcare services.

Invitations have already been sent out to key groups across Ashburton’s health and social services to establish a group who have local influence and can lead local design.

This includes general prac-

tice teams, community services providers, Ashburton Hospital personnel, primary and secondary health professionals, council, consumer groups and Maori provider groups.

Canterbury Clinical Network programme director Kim Sinclair-Morris said the establishment of an SLA in Ashburton is an important step for the better integration of primary, secondary and community health services.

“This alliance will provide a platform for local healthcare providers and community leaders to lead the redesign of Ashburton’s health system,” she said.

Mrs Sinclair-Morris said the new model would ensure the best outcomes for the community. A similar model was successfully established in Kaikou-

ra, a region that she said faces a number of similar opportunities and challenges as the Ashburton region.

Canterbury District Health Board planning and funding service transition team leader Greg Hamilton said the aim of the Ashburton SLA was to provide better, more timely care for the people of Ashburton – regardless of who is providing the care.

“The Ashburton SLA will ultimately recommend the prioritisation and development of co-ordinated and integrated primary health, social and hospital services,” Dr Hamilton said.

Workshops will also be held at the meeting next month, and an inaugural Ashburton SLA meeting is scheduled for August.

Raising the refugee quota in NZ Stu Oldham

ew Zealand is not the good international citizen that we want it

to be.

We accept just 750 people on the refugee quota each year, making us 90th on the per capita measure of countries that accept refugees worldwide.

Australia accepts three times more refugees per head than we do. Next time you tut-tut its hard line on boat people, remember it accepts 13,500 refugees a year.

Our desire to be seen as a global good guy was a strong part of our pitch for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, even as we did little to prove it.

Our commitment to the refugee quota programme has been as it is for 28 years, resisting international crises and now, the worst refugee crisis since World War Two. We deplored the violence in Syria and sent troops to Iraq, but we failed to offer safe refuge for too many of the people - children, families - caught in the middle.

This says more about politics at home than the realities overseas.

After all, politicians are usually quick to act when enough voters ask them to.

But on refugees, we have been silent. Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse might double the quota, but he knows he will have to box clever.

Many New Zealanders say the government should help our own before throwing the doors open to migrants, and they worry about the expense of taking more in.

But refugees do not deserve to be caught up in the wider immigration debate - they barely register in a country where net migration is near 40,000 a year.

They are heavily scrutinised and they are only accepted if they are fleeing persecution, violence or death. They’re not here for our jobs - they’re here for the safety we afford them.

Despite the low numbers, we have one of the best refugee resettlement programmes in the world.

It is more than capable of growing to help show the world we really are prepared to punch above our weight.

I

am a huge sports fan. I have participated in the odd triathlon and cycling event in the past, although my life as a local MP combined with my responsibilities as a Minister do sometimes make it difficult to maintain a good fitness regime.

At the moment though, I am a member of the Parliamentary netball team, which definitely involves dedication since our practice sessions are held at 7am.

Sport is a key part of our identity as New Zealanders.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the quarter-final of the Fifa Under-20 World Cup between Germany and Mali at Christchurch Stadium on June 14.

It has been great for New Zealanders to have had the opportunity to see the rising stars of football playing here over the past three weeks and to get to know teams from countries we may never have had contact with before, such as Senegal and Uzbekistan.

While we may still consider rugby our national game, it is great to see New Zealanders getting involved in other sports and succeeding on the world stage.

Recent examples include Kiwi drivers Earl Bamber and Brendon Hartley achieving first and second respectively in the Le Mans 24 hour race in France, and New Zealander Haydon Paddon securing second place in the World Rally Championship in Italy.

Here in Canterbury we are very fortunate to have some fantastic new sporting facilities including the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton.

I was very impressed by this large state-of-the-art sporting hub when I attended the

by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English back in early May. I am sure that such a great facility will be well-received by the local community and help encourage people to take up a new sport or improve their general fitness levels.

More recently Prime Minister John Key opened the Christchurch Football Centre which is at the eastern end of the Selwyn electorate in Yaldhurst. This brand new facility includes two new full-size artificial pitches with floodlights as well as natural turf pitches

for younger players.

The Football centre is the first stage of an International Sports Centre, which its creator, Christchurch businessman and philanthropist Slava Meyn, wants to encourage greater sporting participation and provide a high-performance environment for young people from the Canterbury region.

It is great to see such excellent new sporting facilities opening in our region.

With our high obesity rates, it is important that people of all ages have the opportunity to be active as this can help

prevent or alleviate long-term health conditions.

It is especially important that as parents we are good role models to our children and encourage them to embrace an active lifestyle through participating in sport.

This includes teaching them to be gracious whether they win or lose the game, rather than promoting an aggressive, unsportsman-like attitude.

As actor Rene Naufahu commented when drawing attention to this issue recently, “we’re not fighting world wars, we’re developing kids”.

by Dylann Roof has emerged in which the accused Charleston church shooter rails against African Americans and appears in photographs with guns and burning the US flag.

It came to light as a mournful vigil at the weekend for nine black worshippers killed at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church gave way to anger and scheduled protests in Charleston and the state capital Columbia.

A rambling 2500-word manifesto on the website, laced with racist lingo and spelling errors, does not bear the 21-year-old’s name.

But its first-person style, its title - “Last Rhodesian” - and references to Charleston and apartheid South Africa suggested he was its author.

“I have no choice. I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight,” the manifesto stated.

“I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country.

“We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the Internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to

be me.” Downloadable files on the website contain photos of Roof, who hails from a small village outside Columbia.

In one, he is seen in a garden, holding a Confederate flag and handgun, wearing aviator-style sunglasses and oddly surrounded by potted flowers.

Two others depict Roof in a bedroom - one with a Confederate flag, the other pointing a handgun at the camera.

Roof was arrested over the state line in North Carolina the day after the terror during an evening Bible study at the Emanuel church, one of the nation’s

most historic African American places of worship.

Some photos show him wearing garments with the flags of Rhodesia, as Zimbabwe was called under white rule, and apartheid-era South Africa.

On Friday, Roof appeared via videolink in court and heard devout relatives of the dead - which included Emanuel’s chief pastor and state senator Clementa Pinckney - express forgiveness.

Later, thousands - both white and black - gathered for a twilight vigil at a college basketball arena, singing the civil

rights anthem “We Shall Overcome” and vowing not to let the bloodbath divide Charleston, the one-time American capital of the transatlantic slave trade.

But the mood shifted to anger on Saturday, with a rally called for 6pm at the state legislature in Columbia, where the Confederate flag has been a focal point for controversy for years.

Unlike US and state flags, it was not lowered to half-mast after the killings - because, officials say, doing so by South Carolina law requires approval from the state legislature.

While some whites consider the Civil War-era flag an emblem of Southern regional pride and heritage, others see it as a sinister symbol of white supremacy and racism.

Roof is being held in solitary confinement at a Charleston area jail as police follow up on their investigation. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

He has reportedly said that he “wanted to start a race war,” in what authorities are treating as a hate crime and investigating as possible “domestic terrorism.”

His arrest warrant revealed how he allegedly shot the six women and three men, aged 26 through 87, multiple times with a high-calibre handgun and then stood over a survivor to make a “racially inflammatory” statement.

Three dead as 4WD hits crowd

Al Jazeera journalist detained

A four-year-old boy is one of three people who were killed when a “mentally unbalanced” man ploughed his four-wheel drive into a crowd in the Austrian city of Graz, police say.

Witnesses said the green 4WD was travelling at over 100km/h when it slammed into a crowd of people on one of the main shopping streets in the city.

The 26-year-old Austrian driver has been detained and described as a “mentally unbalanced” man, according to governor Hermann Schuetzenhoefer.

A 24-year-old woman and a man, 28, were also killed while 34 others were injured, six remaining in a critical condition, officials said.

Regional police chief Josef Klamminger ruled out a terrorist motive.

Police have arrested Al-Jazeera’s Ahmed Mansour at a Berlin airport, the journalist has said via Twitter, after Germany acted on an international arrest warrant issued by his native country Egypt.

“I am still under arrest at Berlin airport, waiting to be taken before an investigating judge,” Mansour wrote on his Twitter account at the weekend.

German federal police confirmed a 52-year-old journalist travelling to Doha had been arrested at Berlin Tegel airport.

A police spokesman said the arrest took place at around 3.20pm, adding that while Mansour was born in Egypt, he also has British nationality.

Five hours later, the journalist was still in police detention, and was set to be taken before a judge, who would determine whether an extradition process would be launched, the spokesman added.

The Egyptian-issued arrest warrant accused Mansour of committing “several crimes”, German police said, without giving further details.

Doha-based Al-Jazeera confirmed the arrest on its website, adding that an Egyptian court had sentenced Mansour in absentia in 2014 to 15 years in prison, for “torturing a lawyer in 2011 on Tahrir Square” in Cairo, epicentre of an antiregime uprising that brought down former president Hosni Mubarak.

tweeted: “The question now is how have the German government and Interpol become tools in the hands of a bloodthirsty regime in Egypt that came to power through a coup, and is led by the terrorist (President) Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.”

Mansour recently interviewed Abu Mohamed alJolani, the chief of al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate, Al-Nusra Front.

Ties between Doha and Cairo have been extremely strained over Qatar’s backing for the former, short-lived Egyptian government under the Muslim Brotherhood.

Three Al-Jazeera journalists in Egypt, including Canadian Mohamed Fahmy and Australian Peter Greste, were arrested in 2013 and then sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on charges of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

Greste has since been deported while the other two were facing retrial.

Bodies on way home The bodies of five Irish students killed in a balcony collapse in California are being returned home while a sixth Irish-American victim has been buried in the US. The six students, all aged 21 and 22, died last week when a fourth-floor apartment balcony collapsed during a birthday party at the complex in Berkeley, two blocks from the University of California campus. The parents of the five Irish students killed in the accident thanked the community for its support and applauded the victims’ friends for the response after the balcony crashed to the ground.

Arrest over dog attack A three-week-old baby boy has died after being bitten by a dog at a home in England’s northeast.

Police have arrested and are questioning a 30-year-old man who was inside the Sunderland property when the attack took place at the weekend. The baby boy was rushed to hospital but died a short time later, police said.

A relative told local media that although the baby’s mother was out, the youngster had not been left alone. The man, who did not want to be named, said the dog was usually kept outside and was never left alone with the children despite it being a good natured animal.

Mid-air rescue A British Army parachutist who was saved in a mid-air rescue when his chute did not open properly on a display jump says he owes his team-mate a pint of beer. Fast-thinking Corporal Wayne Shorthouse, 32, claimed that he was no hero after grabbing Corporal Mike French, 34, amid the tangled canopy and bringing the pair down to land safely in water.

15 killed in bus plunge At least 15 people have been killed after a bus plunged down a mountain gorge in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. The bus was travelling from New Delhi to the town of Pithoragarh when it skidded off the road and into the 500m gorge, a police official said.

At least 20 people were injured and were being treated at a local hospital.

Toll rises to 90 The death toll from India’s latest incident of mass alcohol poisoning following the consumption of toxic homemade liquor has risen to 90, Mumbai police say.

Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy police commissioner in the western Indian city, said yesterday it was possible that the number of dead from drinking the illicit moonshine could reach three figures. “Ninety people have now died,” he said.

“More than 40 are being treated in hospital and the death toll may reach 100,” the commissioner added.

Dazzled by Cat Ba Island

T

ravellers I met in Vietnam who had already visited Halong Bay all echoed the same refrain: “It’s beautiful, but ...”

They regaled me with horror stories of what should have been dreamy trips on Chinese junks floating through those stunning Unesco World Heritage-listed karst formations.

There were accounts of food poisoning, falls requiring hospital visits, aggressive touts, rip-offs, and an overcrowded bay filled with tourists being shepherded to the same sites at the same time.

Don’t even bother going, an Israeli woman said, showing me the scar on her knee inflicted by a fall while rushing to the bathroom to throw up after a less-than-fresh seafood meal.

But how could I not? When Unesco uses words like majestic, spectacular and outstanding, it would be crazy not to see what all the fuss is about.

With a bit of research, I decided to dodge the touts and package tours, and instead headed for Cat Ba Island to the south of Halong Bay. About six hours from Hanoi, a trip requiring two buses, a boat and a minivan, Cat Ba turned out to be the best way

With a fair amount of trepidation after many negative reports, Neda Vanovac headed for Cat Ba Island in Vietnam and was mesmerised with the tropical paradise. to see the bay. Or not quite: it sits on Lan Ha Bay, the southern part of Halong, and is a ruggedly beautiful island in its own right.

Almost half of Cat Ba is a biosphere reserve, along with 90km2 of its waters.

The main town has the dilapidated feel of a 1970s pastel beach resort gone to seed, but is still entirely appealing; a string of strangely narrow, disco-look high-rise hotels with mirrored walls of windows jut up in front of Cat Ba’s main peak, overlooking a wide promenade and a beautiful bay filled with bobbing fishing boats.

A cliffside path winds its way out of the small town along the coast, past karst island outcrops. The pathway leads to three small coves with clean white sand and clear water for swimming.

It is very inviting, despite the morbid legend: Cat Ba means Women’s Island, allegedly named for three Tran Dynasty women whose bodies washed up one by one on the three

beaches. You can luxuriate on the sand, but the best way to see the beautiful bay is from the water, and so bright and early the next morning I join a daytrip to sail out into the bay before hopping into twin kayaks.

A gentle rain is falling, lending the bay a misty, otherworldly air out of which loom floating fishing villages. Dogs teeter at the edges of pontoons to bark as we pass, their owners untangling nets and presiding over breakfast fires.

Paddling out towards open water against the current is arduous, before our guide leads us straight at a karst wall.

At the last moment, I lay back in my kayak and drift through a tiny gap, my nose almost scraping the rocks due to the high tide.

And then we were inside a completely circular karst island, lush vegetation cascading down the sheer walls.

It is perfectly quiet in the soft morning rain, a far cry from the loud, relentless Halong Bay

tales I’d been so scared by.

We spend the rest of the day circumnavigating the formations. Some give way to deep U-shaped lagoons, with squirrels leaping along stunted trees that cling improbably to the rock walls.

On another island, we pull our kayaks up onto a small beach to pay our respects at a tiny temple, before plunging into the water to soothe our aching muscles.

By the afternoon, the clouds have cleared, and we are blinded by the sun, a glowing orange ball as it silhouettes the floating villages before vanishing, leaving a streak of amber along the horizon.

But Cat Ba offers as much on land as it does from the water, I learn, as a local guide pops me on the back of his motorcycle the following day and whizzes me through drowsy villages up towards the national park, where we hike past houses abandoned by locals during the American War of the 1970s.

calmly in a clearing, picking our way up steep mossy stone pathways, the walkway intertwined with vines and tree roots. A sweaty clamber to the top rewards us with spectacular views of the island’s rugged interior, layers upon layers of jutting green peaks swathed in the remaining trails of morning mist.

There is no sign of any golden-maned langur; the island natives are one of the most endangered primates in the world and the subject of a concerted conservation effort.

On our way back down, we stop at the hospital cave, used

by Vietnamese troops to hide from the Americans.

The enormous complex is made up of vast caverns, a far cry from some of the other, cramped hideouts dotted throughout Vietnam.

How many of them housed a swimming pool and a cinema?

Home to about 200 people at a time, the extraordinary hideout has stone-hewn wards, a surgery and pharmacy, bathrooms and kitchen, and was never discovered by US troops.

As my bus-boat-bus heads back towards the smoggy skyline of Hanoi, I wish I could say the same about Cat Ba. - AAP

Young first-fives channel Carter

BY GREGOR PAUL As much as it’s a challenge playing first-five, it’s just as tough trying to identify young men who have the right skills to make it far in the game.

Of all the positions, first fiveeighths is the one most open to interpretation about what skills are important.

That much is evident in the professional game, too, where there is constant debate over whether the running game of Beauden Barrett is a better fit for the All Blacks than the game management portfolio of Daniel Carter.

Most votes go in favour of Carter and certainly those who have a role to play in identifying and nurturing young talent have the Crusader in mind as the near-perfect player to replicate.

Carter is the total package and perhaps the only No 10 in world rugby who has been totally equipped to handle the professional game.

Richie Harris, the former Tamaki College First XV, Blues Schools and Grammar Carlton coach, who has recently been appointed head coach of Northland, says he’s uncertain whether enough attention is paid to a player’s basic skills in the earliest stage of identification.

“There are what I would call hard skills and soft skills,” says

Harris. “The hard skills are effectively catch, pass, kicking and tackling. These are the core components of any first-five.

“These skills have to be good and they have to be second nature so that, when players come under more and more pressure as they rise through the ranks, their hard skills hold up. What we often see is that the softer skills – being able to direct the game – can crumble if the core skills aren’t good enough.

I wonder if we pay enough attention to those basic things.”

Carter is held up as the perfect role model as his game is built on pass, catch, tackle and kick. From his first season with the Crusaders in 2003, it was apparent he had an already highly defined basic set of skills that were the foundation of his excellence.

One skill of his in particular that is often overlooked is his defence. Almost every team at every level is looking to send big forwards down the first-

five’s channel and those No10s who struggle with that side of the game can quickly be exposed as frail and vulnerable.

Former All Blacks halfback Ant Strachan, now Auckland’s high performance manager, also feels the simplicity of many first XV and age-grade game plans can restrict the development of first-fives.

“I guess here in Auckland we don’t, for some reason, find a lot of 10s who are naturally good decision-makers,” says Strachan. “It’s relatively easy to operate successfully when the pack is winning good ball and on the front foot, but what about when they are not and there is pressure to contend with? Can guys handle the pressure and still make good decisions?”

The first-fives coming through Auckland are Simon Hickey – a player Strachan remains confident has much to offer – and Mitchell Hunt, the Tasman recruit with the New Zealand under-20 side.

McCullum ponders future in ODIs New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum may have played his 254th and last one-day international.

The 33-year-old, who puts his fragile back through an arduous regime to prepare for each game, said he was yet to decide his coloured-clothing future after the three-wicket loss to England which tipped the series 3-2 in the hosts’ favour.

“I don’t know. We’ll wait and see. We’ll let the dust settle on this. It’s been a great year, an incredible summer for us.

“We’ve scaled some heights that hadn’t been done before by our country and we’re starting to build a soul to how we play.

“I’m lucky enough to be in a position of leadership to give guys the freedom to play that brand. I’ve enjoyed the last two years. The body’s a bit sore but we’ll see what happens.”

It’s logical to consider McCullum could miss the limited oversonly tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa in August in favour of getting heir apparent Kane Williamson more experience.

McCullum has been largely on the go since October. He played the majority of the New Zealand programme (with a small gap for the ODIs against Pakistan in the UAE), the World Cup, the Indian Premier League and will shortly embark on a seven-game stint with England T20 defending champions, the Birmingham Bears, which extends to July 22.

A special milestone also looms if he plays the three tests against Australia and two tests against Sri Lanka. Barring injury, the opening home test of what may be reduced to a twomatch series against Australia would be his 100th in succession since his March 2004 debut.

Of the 2791 test cricketers, South Africa’s AB de Villiers on 98 looks set to reach the mark first against Bangladesh in Mirpur on July 30. McCullum would be next. Only four players - Allan Border 153, Alastair Cook 112 not out, Mark Waugh 107 and Sunil Gavaskar 106 have played more than 100 consecutive tests.

Celtic deals to champion Methven

Celtic and Southern struck first blood in Mid Canterbury rugby’s Watters Cup round-robin on Saturday.

Celtic took down the combined champions Methven 12-6 to collect some silverware of their own while Southern picked up a bonus point beating Hampstead 32-17.

Celtic got their hands on the Bill Walsh Cup for the first time and also collected the White Cup - played for between the top two teams from the previous year’s round-robin - as they kicked their way past a fumbling Methven side.

Methven made more of the play but came up with more errors than points as Celtic executed the basics better.

Celtic made their share of mistakes but they were making them safely outside their danger zone.

Methven’s phase play lacked the fluidity and finishing they would have liked - instead it was riddled with mistakes and bad ball security.

The hosts simply put the ball down the right end and waited on the mistake - which more often than not came - however, they were also unable to break the defence.

Enter the boot of wing Dave Morrison, who kicked four penalties for Celtic.

Morrison had two penalties in each half and Methven could only reply with one in each half from first-five Davey Maw. Methven had several scoring opportunities only for Celtic to keep coming up with an answer.

Celtic’s best chance came in the second half when first-five Nathan McCloy went close after he scooped up a dropped ball and bee-lined for the corner but put a foot in touch just shy of the try line.

Southern wears Hampstead down Southern banked a crucial bonus point in their 32-17 win over hosts Hampstead.

Southern set the tone upfront with a structured, simple approach – playing almost 10man rugby - to wear Hampstead down.

“We wanted to take it to them upfront and play a pretty forward oriented game, setting a platform before going wide,” Southern assistant coach Mike Spence said.

Southern first five James Miller directed traffic with an accurate display of tactical kicking to put his forwards in prime position - and they did the rest.

A poor kick-chase gifted Southern’s wing Micky Collins an easy run in for the opening try which Miller converted and added a penalty for a 10-0 lead.

Hampstead missed two penalties from kickable positions before Tevita Tupou put one over prior to halftime.

Hampstead were right in the hunt when Peter Milo prop scored his first senior try and Tupou converted to narrow the gap to seven but “silly errors” continued to thwart their efforts.

“We played pretty well and looked good with the ball in hand going forward,” Hampstead’s Regan Broker said.

In brief Southern unbeaten Southern maintained the status quo in Senior B rugby’s Centennial Mug with a 26-15 win over Hampstead. The win kept them unbeaten after five rounds as they look to add the mug to the Michael Duff memorial they won in the first round. Celtic collected a 36-10 win over Methven to keep the pressure on Southern as they too are yet to taste defeat. Elsewhere Rakaia collected a win without breaking a sweat as Allenton defaulted – their second of the season and a worrying sign after the team’s recent run of heavy losses. The Tinwald-Mt Somers was deferred as the latter’s players were unable to get to the game due to the snow, and Collegiate had the bye.

Young guns upset leaders

Hampstead-Collegians delivered a huge upset in the MidSouth Canterbury hockey competition on Saturday.

The young side came back from conceding a goal in the opening minute to record a 2-1 win over Cambridge.

Cambridge scored almost immediately but instead of the highly favoured hosts kicking on, Hampstead-Collegians came to the fore.

“The game continued to seesaw throughout with tight marking from both sides making it difficult to hold on to possession,” Hampstead-Collegians coach Donna Mealings said.

By halftime Cambridge still held the one-goal lead but midway through the second half Emma Mealings scored from a penalty corner to level the score.

The game intensified as both sides desperately searched for a winner while also trying to deny their opponents.

Hampstead-Collegians earned another penalty corner late in the piece and Mealings hammered home a direct hit for the shock 2-1 win.

They now have three wins and two draws from the past five weeks – equalling the number of wins from their maiden season last year.

With their compatriots doing them a favour tipping up their title rivals, Hampstead had to work hard for a 2-1 win over Timaru Girls in Ashburton to remain unbeaten on top of the

Warriors improve The Warriors set a new performance bench mark with improved ball security and composure providing the cornerstones for Saturday night’s 36-14 victory over the Gold Coast Titans. Despite trailing 10-6 at the break the Warriors controlled the second-half by completing 18 of 20 sets and committing just two errors as they ran in five tries to overwhelm the home team.

Coach Andrew McFadden said his side were focused on controlling the football and knew they could finish the match strongly if they could limit the opposition’s time in possession. “We’ve put a lot of focus on that [set completions] in the last few weeks,” said McFadden.

New faces battle for spots inTall Blacks Tall Blacks head coach Paul Henare has named a list of 22 players to either trial or be considered for selection for the vital Oceania Series against Australia in August, with the winner booking a place at the Rio Olympics next year.

The bulk of those on the list will attend a camp in Auckland in early July before Henare and his coaching team name an initial roster of 14 players to travel to London, Croatia and Slovenia to prepare for the games in Melbourne and Wellington against the Aussie Boomers – a team that is set to be stacked with NBA talent including Cleveland Cavalier Mathew Delavadova and NBA champion Andrew Bogut from the Golden State Warriors.

Tai Wynyard who last year became the youngest ever player to suit up for the Tall Blacks.

“This is a huge opportunity for these players and a chance to show us who they are off court as well as on,” Henare said.

“The Tall Black culture is something this team and all who have played or been involved with in the past is very proud of.

“We will be looking for their character and personality to come through as well as competing on court over the three days.”

The opportunity for this team is to qualify for the Olympic Games via the direct route as champions of Oceania, something that poses a huge challenge but is nonetheless something Henare said was within their capabilities.

The Wellington Phoenix’s lengthy pre-season campaign will continue next week with a trip to Fiji. The tour will see the Phoenix take on the Fiji national team twice, while the Phoenix Premiers will face the Fiji Under-23 team in curtainraisers in Suva on Saturday, June 27 and in Ba on Tuesday, June 30.

The Wellington Phoenix squad includes 14 contracted players but excludes striker Roy Krishna who will play for the Fijian national team. Sixteen players have been selected for the Premiers squad, which includes eight academy players, and has an average age of just 17.4 years. Contracted Phoenix players Louis Fenton, Alex Rufer and Oliver Sail weren’t selected to travel as they are expected to be named in the New Zealand Under-23 squad for the OFC Championship in Papua New Guinea in early July.

Busy commentator Fifa television commentator John Helm has two passports. It’s not because of dual nationality. That’s two separate British passports, necessary because Helm travels so much. The 72-year-old, who voiced the final of the Under-20 World Cup between Brazil and Serbia, will be in Portugal for the Beach Soccer World Cup in July.

Before the end of the year, he also has assignments in China, Russia and Japan. “At any one time, one passport is usually at an embassy somewhere,” he says. “Meanwhile, I’m on the other side of the world.”

Stoic Serbs beat flamboyant Brazil

BY MICHAEL BURGESS In many ways, the final of the Fifa U-20 world cup was a classic football tragedy.

One team played with adventure and skill, the other was defending for much of the 120 minutes, but won 2-1. But that’s football, that’s the sport. And sure, Serbia were limited but also incredibly courageous.

This was their fourth consecutive extra time match in 11 days and they simply wanted it more.

You had to admire their resolve yesterday. After barely seeing the ball in extra time, they took advantage of some naive Brazilian defending (definitely not the first time that sentence has been written) to score a late breakaway winner.

Serbia’s defence was outstand-

ing. The twin towers in the centre (1.93m Milos Veljkovic and 1.95m Srdan Babuc) repelled everything, and in front of them was a defensive shield of Death Star proportions.

And Serbia’s goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic, who took the Golden Glove award, was the difference. He was momentous.

“Yes, of course we were lucky but luck is the battle in this game and you have to deserve to be lucky,” said coach Velijko Paunovic. “Brazil is an amazing team. They had a lot of chances but so did we. We are a team, we play as one.”

The stadium experience was again a bit of a shambles. The concourse often resembled a Tokyo subway station, with a heaving mass of people and nowhere to go. And it’s never fun

instructed by a burly security guard to “please return to your [uncovered] seat” when it’s raining and between matches.

But there could be no complaints about the game. Often finals are an anti-climax but this was a beauty – some wonderful football, a stunning goal and plenty of drama, not to mention a spectacular dumping of rain in extra time.

Brazil honoured the legacy of the famous yellow shirts – both good and bad. They produced some sumptuous football with ‘nutmegs’ and a move that looked like the football version of basketball’s alley-oop. But there were also typically-shaky defensive moments, which contributed to both Serbian goals.

One nearby spectator was heard comparing this Serbian

team to the dour Greece side of 2004.

That’s a bit harsh – this team has more imagination – but there are similarities. Serbia have the same fighting spirit, organisation and set piece threat. They pack their defence and counter attack rapidly. It isn’t pretty but maybe it’s the face of modern football.

That’s not to say they don’t have class, particularly midfielder Andrija Zivkovic.

Brazil started the second half with a surge, but still couldn’t beat Rajkovic, whose value must have been multiplying by the minute for watching scouts.

Serbia hardly had the ball – with 37 per cent possession – but it was enough.

After going close through Milan Gajic, who forced a great re-

flex save from Brazil goalkeeper Jean, they took the lead in the 70th minute. The Europeans broke down the right and unmarked striker Stansia Mandic converted at the far post.

The lead lasted only three minutes, as substitute Andreas Pereira scored the goal of the tournament. The Manchester United midfielder beat four players before finishing from a tight angle.

Brazil had a number of great chances in extra time before Nemanja Maksimovic’s heroics, the midfielder coolly slotting the most important goal of his life after being played onside by Brazil’s defence.

Mali claimed third place with an entertaining 3-1 over Senegal, with Golden Ball winner Adama Traore scoring a brace.

Goals hard to come by Mid Canterbury United’s Brad Blundell carries possession out of his own half against St Andrew’s in a Mainland Football 13th grade division three match at the Ashburton Domain.

MCU 13s lost the match 1-0 on what was a day to forget for the majority of the Mid Canterbury sides.

MCU Masters went down to top of the table FC Twenty11 0-1 while Burwood put eight unanswered goal past Methven in division five.

MCU 18s lost 1-6 away to Shirley Boys 2nd XI in 18th grade division two while the MCU 16s had a big 5-0 win over Christ’s College in 16th grade division one.

Yesterday, Methven A went down 0-4 away to Waimak in women’s division one while Methven B won 3-2 over Christchurch United in division three.

Ellis makes instant impact for Kiwis New Zealand cyclists have continued their strong early season form in USA this week.

The women’s endurance track team made an immediate impact in their first outing, with Lauren Ellis winning the criterium on the second stage of the Tour of America’s Dairylands near Wisconsin.

Ellis launched a solo attack two laps from the finish of the one hour race, and remained clear to win by six seconds.

The New Zealand women’s squad had only arrived during the week for a block of training and racing to prepare for the summer track season, highlighted by the UCI World Cup in Cambridge in December.

Meanwhile the sprinters have continued to shine in their campaign in Pennsylvania, where Eddie Dawkins broke the track record on his win to victory in the UCI Festival of Speed event at Trexlertown.

Dawkins lost his existing track record early in the day when it was lowered to 10.269m for the 200m flying lap qualifying, but the big Southlander grabbed it back when he topped the times with 10.237s on the outdoor track.

He then beat teammate Ethan Mitchell in the quarterfinal before accounting for Canadian champion

Hugo Barrette in the semifinal. Meanwhile fellow Kiwi and Commonwealth Games champion Sam Webster had beaten Pan American medallist Njisane Phillip in the quarters and in-form Suriname rider Tjon En Fa Jair in the semi. The Suriname rider had been responsible for clipping Dawkins’ old track record earlier in the day.

Dawkins prevailed in two straight rides in the final over Webster to claim the honours.

London Olympian Natasha Hansen continued her impressive return to the sport, finishing second in the women’s sprint. She beat off the challenge from Canada’s Kate O’Brien in the semi-final with an excellent ride but lost in two straight rides to world silver medallist Elis Ligtee (NED) in the final.

The battle began for Mid Canterbury rugby supremacy with the opening round of the Watters Cup on Saturday.

Tough decisions ahead Making the All Blacks’ first squad of the year may turn out to be the relatively easy part of 2015 for a handful of out of form regulars and the five new caps.

The hard part is going to be surviving the cull from 41 to 31 when it comes at the end of August and as All Black head coach Steve Hansen revealed yesterday, the next 10 weeks are effectively an extended audition for World Cup spots.

The squeeze points are the loose forwards, back three and midfield. Cory Jane, Israel Dagg and Charles Piutau face intense competition from Waisake Naholo and Nehe Milner-Skudder.

Victor Vito and Liam Messam may be playing for one place and

it’s unlikely that all of Sonny Bill Williams, Malakai Fekitoa, Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Ryan Crotty, Colin Slade and Lima Sopoaga can fit into the World Cup squad.

A nerve-jangling, charactertesting, career-defining period looms for those players and also the likes of Jeremy Thrush, Luke Romano and James Broadhurst to see if they can persuade the selection panel that they are the right men to take to England and defend the World Cup. Starting with the test in Samoa - which players in the Super Rugby final won’t be available for - there are five tests for everyone to stake their claim.

“I don’t think it would be fair if we didn’t give them all

an opportunity,” said Hansen.

“There’s some pretty tough decisions to be made. There is a group of about five players who have been injured and haven’t played a lot.

“I asked myself some time ago, ‘how are we going to manage this Samoan game and how are we going to make sure that when we come to select the Rugby World Cup team, we have got the right people?’

“As a trio [selectors] we decided that 41 was the number and what that has allowed us to do, is make sure that come the end of the Rugby Championship, everyone that we think has the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the World Cup has been given an opportunity

in an environment where they will be tested to see whether they can do the job or not.”

The back three equation is the one that sits as the hardest to call. Naholo has been a near unstoppable force with the Highlanders - the best finisher in the competition and a man, at Super Rugby level at least, whose running has appeared to be as deadly as Julian Savea’s.

The unknown with Naholo, however, is his ability to cope with the high ball; chase kicks and read defensive lines - skills that are all high priority in test football.

Blacks know they will face an aerial assault and that their back three will need to be able to deal with it.

Jane, Dagg and Piutau have proven themselves both at test level and have excellent aerial skills. But none has much in the way of form or fitness behind them.

“The back three is probably the most contested area of the team at the moment,” said Hansen.

“We have got Israel, Charles and Cory Jane - all three of them haven’t played a lot of football and they are being challenged

by Milner-Skudder and Waisake both. So that will be interesting to see a bit of competition.”
