It’s been a long time between drinks but the Ashburton rugby club recorded a famous win on Saturday, breaking its decade-long Watters Cup drought.

The senior team’s 25-19 home win over Celtic in its opening competition matchup post-Covid ensured this year’s reduced club rugby season began in momentous circumstances.

It is believed the side has not tasted victory in the Mid Canterbury cup competition since 2010.

The team has come agonisingly close on numerous occasions over the years and proceedings threatened to unravel for Hampstead in the second half of the match on Saturday.

Yet the side hung tough, thwarting a second half onslaught from a desperate Celtic.

Hampstead club president Tracey Henderson said it was an amazing afternoon.

“It’s been far too long between wins,” she said.

“It was a great feeling.

“We had a really good night (Saturday), enjoying it as you can probably imagine.”

Former coach Shaun Bovey said it was a proud day in a comment on the club’s Facebook page.

Hundreds lined the embankment at the Hampstead Rugby and All Sports Club for the match, in which both clubs received rousing support.

Henderson added that it was a delight to just see the return of rugby in general.

“The first day back, to see everyone out on the field having a good game was just outstanding,” she said.

“Then to top it off with the win was even better.”

The Travis Durham Memorial Cup was also up for grabs, assuring the club clinched some silverware, not to mention getting that Watters Cup monkey off its back.

Suspicious approach investigated

A teenage girl remained in Christchurch Hospital last night, fighting for her life, following a car crash in Rakaia yesterday morning.

The girl, who is understood to be 13, was one of eight passengers in a small four-wheel drive vehicle which initially failed to stop for police in Rolleston but was then found crashed, having hit a fence and rolled, on the edge of the Rakaia township.

Police initially had tried to stop the vehicle at 4.22am, where a pursuit was abandoned due to the nature of the driving.

Eighteen minutes later, the accident scene was found in Rakaia.

Seven of the eight people in the vehicle, all teenagers, were injured in the accident. Two were listed as critical, four were serious and one was moderate and all were taken to Christchurch Hospital.

Police confirmed yesterday that inquiries were ongoing into the crash and that the Serious Crash Unit had examined the

In an email alert sent out to parents and caregivers, the school advised of the situation and confirmed that the police had been contacted regarding the incident.

Police confirmed to the Guardian at the weekend that they have received a report of a suspicious approach at a location near Manse Street and inquiries were ongoing to establish the circumstances.

The email from Ashburton Intermediate asked parents to talk with their children about such situations.

“Please take this opportunity speak with your child about dealing with unknown members of the public and how to keep themselves safe,” it said.

The message was also shared across to school to students by teachers on Friday.

A Rakaia resident, who asked not be named, said they woke to the noises of emergency responders on the scene.

“There were lights flashing everywhere, it was pretty daunting to see at that time of the morning,” they said.

“It’s really quite sad, that many kids in a car at that time of night – not stopping for police, it could have been easily avoided.”

Police were unable to confirm yesterday where the group of teenagers came from or where they were headed at the time of the crash.

Neighbour angst halts resthome extension project

Neighbours of the new Lochlea subdivision on Allens Road have forced earthworks to stop on the multi-dwelling project because of concerns over raised ground levels along their boundaries.

The development is stage two of the Lochlea Lifestyle Village and it is designed to include 36 houses developed in a similar style to the original village a few 100 metres away. Resource consents for excavations on the site and stormwater discharge were granted by Environment Canterbury and work began prior to the Covid-19 lockdown in late March.

Engineering and surveying company Davis Ogilvie prepared plans for the site and these were approved by the Ashburton District Council but when neighbours realised

In addition his team has redesigned some elements of the project to ensure water flowed away from the neighbouring properties.

Because the area has been subject to flooding in the past, Hopper said it was necessary to raise land at the eastern and southern ends to ensure all water drained towards Allens Road. The plan was to raise land by 0.8 metres to the south and by 1.2 metres at the north/east corner.

Developer Les Briggs said he was in consultation with both the neighbour group and with council, but that the delays were disappointing because the project was now behind schedule.

Ashburton District Council strategy and compliance manager Jane Donaldson confirmed that Davis Ogilvie was working on amended engineering plans and said they had now proposed a stormwater solution that would benefit the greater area, not just the Lochlea extension project. Lockdown: From the front line With New Zealand settling in to a new normal under Covid-19 alert level one, Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay sits down with some of the leaders in the district to reflect on their organisation’s and their own experiences during lockdown.

M

arking a year in the hotseat of the Ashburton Police could have been a time for reflection on the steps taken to improve local policing resources. Instead, for Ashburton sub-area supervisor Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins, it was spent isolating from his family leading the district’s police response to the pandemic.

“It was definitely an interesting time in the history of policing in this country,” he said.

“It was unusual to see the level of traffic out on the state highways and on local roads and also the drop-off in pedestrian traffic, but that is a credit to the Mid Canterbury citizens for doing their part.”

Jenkins said while their workload did not drop-off during lockdown, their type of work changed.

While they only prosecuted a handful of people with breaching lockdown restrictions, many more warnings were handed out in an effort to get people to comply with the conditions in line with the national approach of trying to educate people first.

Police staffing groups were all split into bubbles to reduce the risk of virus potentially spreading through police staff, while access restrictions were put on the police station with Jenkins and CIB staff making use of the former Work and Income buildings located on site.

Jenkins said he was also appreciative of mayor Neil Brown for giving police access to the neighbouring Balmoral Hall, giving them a location to interact with the public without them having to enter the station itself. Anyone taken in to custody during lockdown was transferred straight to Christchurch to be dealt with.

With many staff across the emergency services opting to isolate from their families during lockdown to reduce the risk of transferring the virus to their families, Jenkins was one of those.

“I self-isolated from my family for the entire period, I don’t know of any other officers that did from here.”

Jenkins said many day-to-day functions of the police stopped over lockdown, which has left some catching up to do now with things such as firearms licensing.

Jenkins officially took over as sub-area supervisor on April 29, 2019, marking his one year anniversary in the days after the country moved to alert level three.

“It doesn’t even feel like it, it feels like it has only been five minutes,” he said.

“I transferred from managing investigations to managing staff, and while I was managing staff (when working from the criminal investigation branch), they were all detectives who were highly experienced and trained police officers.

“I have had to realise again what it is like to be working with new police officers that are starting from the beginning in their policing careers.

“I enjoy working with the young staff and the enthusiasm they show.”

Jenkins said he has made changes to the way the station operates and brought in a whole new way of policing, bringing in additional policies so that staff can have confidence in what they are doing if they are working in an unfamiliar territory, allowing them to have a set of guidelines to refer to.

“I have changed the station

structure and increased the amount of staff, there is now more supervisory oversight 24 hours a day with NCO’s working and more frontline staff,” he said.

“I have also added a new family harm component with two staff dedicated to that role and new resources such as the new prisoner truck.

“We are a better policing unit than a year ago. That was the push that I gave when applying for this role and when I was interviewed and showing that we need more staff and supervisors.

“We now have more supervisory oversite than ever before and have that 24 hours a day which is something that we have never had in the past.”

Jenkins said he had also attempted to shift the focus of policing to ensure that their time and resources were focused on offending that was most in the public interest and guiding staff away from more minor matters that while important, there was less value in.

Moving forward he says he wants to introduce more skillsbased training days for staff across a variety of areas to help staff increase their skills and abilities.

“My aim is to make Ashburton a desirable place to come and work,” he said.

“We have a really wide range and scope of policing work.”

Jenkins said they will always struggle with the draw of working in metro areas and the promotion opportunities that are available there compared to in the Ashburton District, but he hoped the chance to learn new skills and work in a different environment, especially for some North Island officers which Jenkins was himself before his move south,

One of the big messages Jenkins pushed when he took up the role was the importance of the local top cop living in the district, and it is not a view that has changed in the past year.

“I absolutely encourage all my staff to be living locally, unfortunately we have quite a few that don’t but I think it is really important to be living in the community you police.”

With the introduction of online reporting and the introduction of the new 105 number, police were receiving more reports of incidents than ever, including many disputes that were more civil matters than criminal matters, incredibly minor offending.

“I want the focus to be on offending where there is far greater victimisation,” he said. “If there is a sexual assault, or gang violence or a house is burgled, that is a step up in victimisation.”

Jenkins said another area of crime that is taking up a lot of police resources is people reporting thefts through unregulated market places such as Facebook.

“If you are using a site like TradeMe they have systems in place that means they can look back and say that it was (you) that listed that item. That is not the case in unregulated spaces like Facebook.”

Jenkins said being able to prove that one certain person had ripped someone off through Facebook was much more difficult, and urged people to use their common sense and “buyer beware”.

“If you are getting a $1000 iPhone for only $50, there is probably not something right there.

“Since I arrived here in 2011 there has always been a gang presence,” he said.

“While it is not illegal to be part of a gang or an associate of a gang, there is some of their behaviour that can be illegal and we do keen an active interest in their activity and when it is not legal we deal with it.

“It is not just a Mid Canterbury issue, it is a Canterbury wide issue and there are the resources there to help deal with that.”

Giving back to the community

It’s national volunteer week, and Hotel Ashburton owner Johnny Singh and Volunteering Mid Canterbury co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan have teamed up to explain the ways the hotel supports volunteers and service groups.

Part of Molyan’s role is to award the volunteer of the month certificate. Hearing about the monthly accolade and wanting to help, Singh signed the hotel up to sponsor the award.

“The community have supported the hotel over the last 50 years, and this is our way of giving back. Hopefully it goes on for another 250 years,” he said.

Molyan said the gift voucher, which she likes to keep as a surprise, is always well received.

“I gave the award to a young mum last week. She really appreciated the gift and is planning to go out for a lovely, child-free dinner with her partner.”

Since the hotel got involved in February 2019, they have supported the volunteer of the month initiative to the tune of $560.

The total should be nearer to $680, but the Covid-19 lockdown saw the award put on hold for three months.

Extending a helping hand to volunteers and charities doesn’t stop at monthly gift vouchers.

Moylan said she has taken advantage of their expertise on more than one occasion in her co-ordinator role. The walk-in, have your AGM or training day, and then walk-out again system makes it easy from an organisational point of view, she said.

Singh said Covid-19 had certainly had an adverse effect on

his business, but he says the remainder of 2020 is about supporting each other and keeping the business afloat.

Covid-19 has left many isolated and a bit afraid to go out again. To combat that, he wants the hotel to become a social hub.

With strong family ties to India, a country notorious for its social culture, Singh wants to grow the

same philosophy within the Hotel Ashburton walls.

Ideally he said it will be filled with families enjoying meals together, service groups and charities taking advantage of the discounts offered and maximising their fundraising efforts and senior citizens coming out from behind their net curtains for the lunch deal.

And no the recipient of this jab felt stung!

The government has helped get more than 3200 people get home from 40 different countries since the Covid-19 pandemic took hold across the world. Over the past couple of months, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has supported 109 repatriation flights.

Some of those flights have been organised by the government, but in other cases New Zealanders have been able to piggyback on flights arranged by other governments. The government has previously put the cost of repatriating New Zealanders stranded in high-risk countries at - RNZ up to $14 million.

Tourism recovery More than 300 businesses have applied for government funding targeted to protect strategic tourism assets. It is part of the government’s $400 million tourism recovery package. Applications for the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme closed on Thursday. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) tourism programme director, Danielle McKenzie, said work was under way to check they are eligible. “The programme is designed to protect assets in the tourism sector that are nationally or regionally vital to New Zealand’s tourism offerings, are culturally and historically important, and have significant spill-over benefits to the region where it is located.”

Applicants need to be tourism assets, have strategic national or regional significance and be able to show they have exhausted all other support options. The Tourism Minister’s Recovery Group would decide on the appropriate support and amount based on advice from MBIE, McKenzie said.

Two new cases of Covid-19 RNZ

Matthew Hunt RNZ Matthew Hunt has been remembered as an “outstanding police officer” by his district commander, who paid tribute to the slain constable in an emotional media conference this afternoon.

The 28-year-old Waitemata police officer was killed, and another officer was shot in the leg, amid a hail of bullets fired after a car they had tried to pull over crashed on Friday, in the Auckland suburb of Massey.

The injured officer remains in a stable condition in hospital, along with a member of the public who was injured by a vehicle in the incident.

Waitemata District Commander Superintendent Naila Hassan said Constable Hunt had only been in the police for two and a half years, mostly serving in Ore-

Hassan fought back the tears as she said Hunt was highly respected by his peers.

“We’re absolutely devastated by the loss of our colleague and our brother Matt. Matt’s death is the ultimate sacrifice of a police officer working to keep our country safe.

“He is and will continue to be sorely missed by us all.”

Senior police officers visited the injured officer in hospital and he was dealing with mixed emotions, Hassan said.

“He is grateful to be alive, but he is absolutely devastated by the loss of his colleague.”

A karakia was held at the site where Matthew Hunt was shot and the area was blessed by local iwi.

A 24-year-old man has been

charged with murder, attempted murder and dangerous driving.

He was granted interim name suppression at a court appearance via videolink on Saturday, and is scheduled to appear in the Auckland High Court on July 8.

A 30-year-old woman has also been arrested on warrants for driving charges and as an accessory to the murder of Constable Hunt, and is now due to appear in Waitakere District Court this morning.

■■TRAGEDY

Thousands in isolation, with hundreds more expected RNZ Auckland’s Covid-19 isolation facilities have reached capacity, with 4272 New Zealanders in managed isolation and almost 900 more expected to arrive in the country in the next two days.

Minister Megan Woods and Air Commodore Digby Webb have held a media conference updating the latest developments in

New Zealand’s Covid-19 managed isolation and quarantine processes.

Air Commodore Webb said the two new facilities in Rotorua were needed to deal with the increase in the number of travellers returning to New Zealand.

He said 297 were expected to arrive in New Zealand today, and another 590 are expected tomorrow.

The two new managed isolated facilities were opened in Rotorua on Saturday and Webb said returnees got further detailed instructions yesterday and had the opportunity to ask for welfare support.

The government is looking at other regions to see if there were other facilities to accommodate future arrivals, and Webb said those returning to New Zealand

would be required to make personal sacrifices to keep the country safe.

He said the selection of hotels was a detailed process, with 60 looked at in Auckland, of which only a quarter were suitable for further examination.

Woods said the two new cases at the border yesterday show the testing regime is working as it should.

There were two new cases of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand yesterday, both in isolation.

One of the new cases is the child of the couple who tested positive on Saturday, and the other is a 59-year-old woman who travelled from Delhi.

The Ministry of Health said in a statement they would not provide the exact age of the child who arrived with its parents from India, but it was under two years old.

“We are pleased to report that all family members are doing well at the Jet Park Hotel, the quarantine facility in Auckland.”

The second case arrived in Auckland on 15 June on flight AI1316.

“She was tested while at the Grand Millennium managed isolation facility and was travelling with her partner, who has also been tested and whose result is pending. Active follow up is now under way.

“An update will be provided on Monday on this case and the follow up of other cases from last week.”

There are now seven active cases in this country.

The total number of confirmed cases is 1161. The combined total of confirmed and probable cases is 1511.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said on Saturday there were two new confirmed cases of the coronavirus in New Zealand – a couple in the 20s who had returned from India with an infant child.

The couple showed no symptoms and returned a positive result after being tested on day 12 of isolation, and taken to the Jet Park quarantine hotel.

On Tuesday it was revealed that two women who had arrived from the UK had tested positive, after they were released from isolation on compassionate grounds.

Three slain in stabbing AP Three people were killed and three seriously hurt yesterday in a summer-evening stabbing attack in a park in the English town of Reading, police said. They said it was “not currently” being treated as a terrorism and the motive was unclear.

Thames Valley Police force said officers arrested a 25-year-old local man at the scene and they were not looking for anyone else.

“There is no intelligence to suggest that there is any further danger to the public,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Ian Hunter. “This is not currently being treated as a terrorism incident; however, officers are keeping an open mind as to the motivation for the incident,” Hunter added. He said detectives from the counter-terrorism unit were supporting the investigation.

British media had earlier reported that police suspected a terrorist motive and that the man arrested was Libyan. Police did confirm that or release the suspect’s name.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his “thoughts are with all of those affected by the appalling incident in Reading.”

The violence erupted as families and friends were enjoying a warm, sunny evening in the Forbury Gardens park in Reading, a town of about 200,000 residents 64km west of London.

helicopters descended on the park. Within minutes police had blocked off several roads, and two air ambulances landed nearby.

Police said that “a number of people were injured and taken to hospital. Tragically, three of these people died, and another three sustained serious injuries”.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading said it was treating two casualties from the incident.

The incident came hours after a Black Lives Matter demonstration at Forbury Gardens, but police said there was no connection between the attack and the protest.

Trump supporters, protesters face off AP President Donald Trump’s supporters faced off with protesters shouting “Black Lives Matter” yesterday in Tulsa as the president took the stage for his first campaign rally in months amid public health concerns about the coronavirus and fears that the event could lead to violence in the wake of killings of Black people by police.

Hundreds of demonstrators flooded the

city’s downtown streets and blocked traffic at times, but police reported just a handful of arrests. Many of the marchers chanted, and some occasionally got into shouting matches with Trump supporters, who outnumbered them and yelled, “All lives matter.”

Later in the evening, a group of armed men began following the protesters. When the protesters blocked an intersection, man wearing a Trump shirt spattered

them with pepper spray. The Trump faithful gathered inside the 19,000-seat BOK Center for what was believed to be the largest indoor event in the country since restrictions to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus began in March. Many of the president’s supporters weren’t wearing masks, despite the recommendation of public health officials. Some had been camped near the venue since early in the week.

An abandoned bus in the Alaska wilderness where a young man documented his demise over 114 days in 1992 has been removed by officials, frustrated that the bus has become a lure for dangerous, sometimes deadly pilgrimages into treacherous backcountry. Christopher McCandless hiked to the bus located 402km north of Anchorage nearly three decades ago, and the 24-year-old Virginian died from starvation when he couldn’t hike back out because of the swollen Teklanika River. He kept a journal of his plight, discovered when his body was found.

McCandless’ story was first documented in Jon Krakauer’s 1996 book Into the Wild, followed by Sean Penn’s movie of - AP the same name in 2007.

Halloween party cancelled Walt Disney World has cancelled its annual after-hours Halloween party at Magic Kingdom that typically begins in mid-August. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is an extra ticket event that runs a couple of nights per week from August through the beginning of November. It features trick-or-treating, Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade, character meet-and-greets with villains and other popular characters, and holiday-themed fireworks. Disney closed it theme parks in Florida and California in mid-March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The parks will reopen in midJuly with Covid-19 guidelines, a month after Universal Orlando and SeaWorld reopened to the public.

Police officer charged with murder of Brooks AP A fired Atlanta police officer has been charged with felony murder in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant last week.

The death of the 27-year-old Brooks – another in a long line of African-Americans killed by police – further heightened racial concerns in the United States at a time of national soul-searching over racism and police brutality.

Garrett Rolfe, the white officer who shot Brooks on June 12 and was fired the next day after surveillance video showed his actions, faces 11 charges including felony murder and assault with a deadly weapon, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard told a news conference in Atlanta.

Rolfe faces the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty if convicted, Howard added.

Howard said Rolfe kicked Brooks after shooting him and that Brosnan stood on the wounded man’s body as Brooks was

Devin Brosnan, another white officer who was on the scene, will co-operate with prosecutors and was charged with aggravated assault and violations of his oath of office, Howard added. Brosnan has been placed on administrative leave.

Brooks did not pose an immediate threat of death to the officers and acted in a calm

and “almost jovial” manner and cooperated with the police as the incident initially unfolded, Howard said. Howard said he reviewed eight videos of the incident.

Video of the incident, which escalated from a call about a man who appeared intoxicated in his car at the Wendy’s restaurant drive-though lane into a fatal shooting, appeared to show Brooks taking one of the officer’s Taser devices and turning and pointing it at Rolfe before being shot.

The killing of Brooks came amid ongoing protests in US cities prompted by the 25 May death of an African-American man named George Floyd after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes while detaining him.

That officer, Derek Chauvin, was charged with second-degree murder. Three other Minneapolis police officers were charged with aiding and abetting.

An autopsy conducted at the weekend showed that Brooks was shot twice in the back and died from blood loss and organ injuries.

Guitar sells for $6m Grunge became gold at the weekend as the guitar Kurt Cobain played on Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged performance sold for an eye-popping $6 million at auction. The 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain played in the band’s rare acoustic performance and subsequent live album was sold to Australian Peter Freedman, owner of Røde Microphones, at the Music Icons event run by Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California. The bids opened at $1 million for the sale that ended up breaking several world records.

Cobain used it to play tunes including About a Girl and All Apologies at the November 18, 1993, show in New York that came less than five months before the singer and songwriter died at age 27.

Wrap your arms around our police

I

t’s been a tough few days for the boys and girls in blue across New Zealand.

The death of a police officer while on duty is always a really hard-felt moment, not just within the force, but for everyday citizens of this country.

We sit back here in our New Zealand bubble and watch things unfold overseas and often think how lucky we are that we don’t have to deal with that kind of behaviour as frequently as they do in a country like America, but when those rare moments do occur it general shakes the majority of the population to the very core.

Our police force are there to protect us. It can be easy to be swept up in the anger of getting a speeding ticket and blame the police for enforcing the laws upon us, but it’s done in order to make sure we are safe.

And largely, they do an outstanding job.

Each and every police officer in this country will be heading to work today, feeling that little bit more cautious about what might await them. They treat each situation they find with a slightly elevated amount of hesitation.

And it’s sad that they will have to do that.

There should be no reason for the police in this country to have to approach life the way that some of their counterparts across the globe do.

We’ve got this Kiwi mantra about us that means we can have a laugh, or crack a smile during day-to-day life and our police force is not immune from that either. Almost all I’ve ever dealt with have been good, genuine people – just out and about doing their jobs.

And part of that job should not be having to worry about someone trying to take their life.

So, if you see a police officer this week, give them a wave or a smile – better still, thank them for their service to our community and to our country – they’ll appreciate it, I’m sure.

But more importantly, they deserve it.

Facing up to the challenges of recovery N

ow that we are in a position where social distancing and sticking to our bubbles is no longer our focus, we need to urgently turn our attention to the challenges of our economic recovery.

Unfortunately television and radio advertisements telling us to “Unite for Recovery,” while helping those media outlets gain some revenue, are simply not going to be enough to avert the current economic and unemployment crisis.

We already know from Statistics New Zealand’s reports that nearly 40,000 jobs were lost in the month of April.

This was at a time when the wage subsidy was in effect and therefore the forecasts are indicating that many more people will be faced with losing their jobs over the coming months.

We simply cannot stick our heads in the sand and pretend everything is rosy. The Prime Minister getting “angry” at businesses when they have no option but to lay off staff or risk

going out of business altogether is unhelpful and indicative of a Government that has no understanding of the economy.

Adding more and more jobs in the Government sector is not a sustainable approach on its own and neither is continuing with wage subsidies indefinitely.

We are going to need to confront, honestly, the challenge ahead.

As the Leader of the Opposition Todd Muller said in a recent speech: “The practice of the last 20 years of working groups flying around before governments get on with helping you is over. The game’s up, including because Covid-19 has shown us that the

Wellington bureaucracy can in fact move much faster when it needs to.”

Everyone agrees that the Government needs to borrow money to get us through this downturn but we need to make sure this money is not frittered away on failed projects like Kiwibuild and light rail.

We need a serious and urgent discussion about our country’s future over the next three, six and nine years and we need a sound economic plan to ensure that we don’t find ourselves at the end of this crisis with a $140 billion loan and nothing to show for it.

National’s JobStart programme, which will pay businesses $10,000 for each new full-time employee they take on before Christmas, is an essential first step, as is our backing of the devastated tourism industry with our $100 million Tourism Accelerator plan.

But these things are only the beginning.

Recent history suggested it was not meant to go this way.

Yet somehow Hampstead withstood everything Celtic threw at them to register an historic 25-19 victory after a frenetic 80 minutes.

Going down to 13 men early in the second half should have spelled disaster for the home team.

However they endured, only giving up the one Celtic try before Hampstead themselves scored against the run of play.

It was Hampstead’s elusive left wing Taumaoe Touli who snaffled a loose ball with no-one in front of him to scamper 50 metres, in what ultimately proved to be the decisive moment of the game.

It was an entertaining afternoon at Hampstead RFC which marked the long awaited return of senior rugby following Covid.

Celtic began strongly and applied early pressure within Hampstead’s red zone.

However they missed an opportunity to register early points when young fullback Elyh McKibbin missed a penalty chance after three minutes.

It was competitive at scrum time as Hampstead looked to inflict some nudge up front.

After sustained pressure in Celtic’s 22, Hampstead crashed over for a 15th minute try.

Six minutes later, Hampstead extended their lead following a barnstorming run from their No. 8 before an overlap of numbers down the blindside led to a try to their fullback to make it 10-0.

Celtic hit back soon after, following some sharp interplay in midfield which sent centre Ben McColgan direct for the corner.

Hampstead restored the 10 point buffer after they scored on the stroke of halftime.

Down 15-5 at the break, Celtic were charged upon resumption with hulking No. 8 Lote Nasiga in particular proving to be a handful.

Celtic were on the charge as the game descended into a brutal grind.

However Celtic’s lack of execution was again found wanting as Touli, enjoying a silky game in his senior club debut, applied the afterburners to score near the posts.

The crowd could sense a boilover, with Celtic rattled.

It should have been sealed late in the game, however a missed penalty attempt from a relatively comfortable position kept Celtic within striking distance.

Hampstead were not to be denied though, with the young Celtic side lacking in fluency, which is often symptomatic of early season rust.

The same cannot be said about

Hampstead who were heroic in denying Celtic.

It was a tough, low-scoring grind in Rakaia in the other Cup game.

The Watters Cup holders, who are fielding an inexperienced senior team in 2020, went down 13-12 to Southern.

Methven, who had the bye as far as Watters Cup competition goes, clinched a 24-14 pre-season win over Mackenzie in Fairlie.

Two late tries from Richie Mo’unga and replacement David Havili picked up late tries to ensure the champion Crusaders ran away with their Super Rugby Aotearoa match at Sky Stadium in Wellington yesterday.

It had been a see-saw struggle for the majority of the match, but it was the Crusaders who charged home, picking up a bonus point for their troubles.

With 12 minutes left, and the scores level, Richie Mo’unga grabbed a loose Hurricanes ball to score, then David Havili sealed the deal by racing up on to a short ball through a huge gap and dotting down for the Crusaders’ fifth try.

The Hurricanes, while keeping up on the scoreboard, scored only one try to the Crusaders’ five, with Jackson Garden-Bachop booting 20 points.

The Crusaders host the winless Chiefs next Sunday while the Hurricanes have the bye and a long road ahead in this competition.

Sevu Reece had scored first for the Crusaders, after the Hurricanes yet again messed up their own lineout.

Reece was a danger all day for the visiting team, and his try came within the first minute of the game.

All Black Richie Mo’unga directed play well, with clever use of the boot and the break to keep the Hurricanes’ defence guessing.

Penalties did become an issue, giving Garden-Bachop the opportunities to keep the home side in the game, and when Asafo Auamua crashed over, it appeared game on.

But the Crusaders were not to be denied.

Ricky May’s remarkable comeback to the sulky took another step forward yesterday when he drove his first winner since returning to driving.

The Methven horseman became the focus of the racing world in January when he suffered a medical event during a race at Omakau in Central Otago.

His heart officially stopped beating for no apparent reason, with doctors later diagnosing the event as hyperpothic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

Doctors later confirmed that they believed he was dead for up to 10 minutes.

Whether May would ever return to race driving again was, at that point, a moot discussion, but as his health improved and the reports from his specialists got even better, the dream of getting back out on the track became a reality.

Officially, he returned 10 days ago, and has driven now at four meetings at Addington.

But despite some nice chances and some beautiful drives, May just couldn’t see to get one past the post first.

That was until he combined with his good mate, Brendon Hill and maiden pacer Oaxacan Dream and they snared victory in a tight finish early on in the day.

In a typically Ricky May effort, the horse was patiently handled, and took all the shortcuts available to get up in the shadows of the post.

The victory took May to 2950 career New Zealand driving wins and put him back on track to reach the magical 3000 mark a remarkable feat only achieved by two other drivers; Tony Herlihy and Maurice McKendry.

Double on debut It may have been a mid-winter’s day at Pukekohe Park on Saturday, but it will live long in the memory of apprentice jockey Callum Jones.

The 17-year-old hoop got the signoff earlier in the week to begin his raceday career, and employer Nigel Tiley wasted no time in utilising the talents of the young rider and his four kilogram claim.

Tiley gave Jones five rides on Saturday and he rewarded his riding master’s faith with two victories and a runner-up performance.

While Jones was over the moon to have his dreams of becoming a jockey come true on Saturday, he said he didn’t have a lot of expectations heading into the day.

“I got the last three trials done last week and got it (apprenticeship) all signed off,” Jones said.

“I couldn’t ask for a lot, I was just hoping to keep my horse straight, stay safe, and not push anyone out.

“But I couldn’t have asked for a better day to start, it was just a thrill.”

Jones recorded his first riding win aboard Diogenes in the Dunstan Equine-Safe (1300m) and he said the win was made even more special by the fact it was with the four-year-old gelding.

“Diogenes, he is one of my favourite horses at the stables,” Jones said.

“From his other runs I was just hoping to cruise around and see how he handled the ground and save a bit for the end.

“I am really stoked to get my first win on Diogenes.

“People have been getting a bit annoyed with him because he is a bit nippy, but some of them will be quiet now because he has won a race.”

Tactix sound a warning for rivals A controlled third quarter from the Tactix has underpinned an impressive 43-36 win over the Southern Steel as the national netball premiership resumed in Auckland on Saturday.

The Tactix edged ahead to take the first quarter 12-11, courtesy of a faultless shooting performance from Ellie Bird and Te Paea Selby-Rickit in nailing all of their shots on goal.

The Steel fought back to win the second stanza 9-8 and level the scores at 20-20 going into halftime.

The third quarter was dominated by some sterling work from Tactix circle defenders Jane Watson and Temalisi Fakahokotau, the Steel struggling to find shooters Jennifer O’Connell and Trinidad and Tobago import Kalifa McCollin.

Tactix wing defence Charlotte Elley was another to play a key role in keeping Steel and Silver Ferns wing attack Gina Crampton in check.

The Tactix won the quarter 14-7 to lead 34-27 at the final break, and maintained composure over the final spell to shut out the win.

Te Paea Selby-Rickit provided the spark for her new team and the nemesis for her old team-mates, squaring off against sister Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit in a player of the match performance.

On Friday, the Northern Mystics celebrated the return of the national netball premiership with a 47-40 victory over Magic.

The Tactix are back in action when they play the Stars on Monday.
