Deluge causes district-wide chaos

Roads were closed and properties inundated by flood waters as the Ashburton District battened down the hatches yesterday to ride out what is likely to be one of its most significant ever rain events.

Roading contractors were out at first light, struggling to clear clogged drains but their efforts were quickly stymied by unrelenting rain that soon saw many streets covered in water several millimetres deep.

Early in the day Ashburton District Council roading manager Brian Fauth issued a warning to motorists to stay off the roads unless travel was essential.

“We’ve got flooding all over the show. There are a lot of manholes popping their lids. If a road is flooded you need to be careful because you won’t see these. And if you’re driving through flooded streets you need to be aware of the bow wave effect that pushes water up into properties,” he said.

Travel information was a moving feast, with roads around the district progressively closed throughout the day.

By 6pm last night State Highway One was closed from Dunsandel. The NZ Transport Agency advised people not to travel south on either the highway or Thompsons Track.

In addition the following roads were closed yesterday: Mitcham Road, from Winchmore Road to Thompsons Track, Thompsons Track, from Winchmore Lauriston Road to Somerton Road, Tarbottons Road, Whiteoak Grove, Catherwood Avenue, Russell Avenue, Wilkins Road, from Grove Farm Road to the end, State Highway 77 to Methven, Bridge Street, Kitchener Street, Trevors Road, Cracroft Maronan Road, from ARG to Maronan Road, Maronan Road, through to Thews Road, Dromore Methven Road, from State Highway One to Thompsons Track, Seafield Road from Singletree to Christys Road, Barkers Road from Back Track to Methven.

Across the district there were countless stories of residents battling rising waters.

Flood waters were lapping the foundations of Nick Jackson’s Mitchell Place home. The street was bank to bank water mid-af-

ternoon and that’s the first time in his nine years living there Jackson had seen this.

“It’s about three inches deep in the centre and lapping at a couple of garages,” he said.

Diane Favel has been washed out of her home on the corner of Queens Drive and Pages Road by

flood waters in the past but since the last deluge changes had been made to drains and she’s keeping her fingers crossed her home stays dry this time round.

Other Pages Road properties were not so lucky with Mill Creek breaching its banks in several places and flowing across lawns.

Residential streets at Lake Hood were also covered with water but that was a sign the slow release drainage system was working, said Lake Hood extension project chairman Graham Kennedy.

The rain storm set the district on track to break its all-time 24 hour rainfall record of 63.2mm recorded on July 31, 2008.

By mid-morning 45 millimetres had fallen and by 2pm the record was shattered when 80.9mm of rain was shown at Graham’s

Weather Station as having fallen over the past 24 hours. By 4pm this had reached 86.1mm.

Electricity Ashburton staff were also out in the deluge after heavy rain and high winds forced lines to arc and spark, cutting power supplies to around 1000 customers.

The issue was quickly resolved, lines manager Shaneel Singh said, with reconnections completed by 2.45pm.

Throughout the day Civil Defence staff were monitoring the rising flood waters and assessing how close the call would be on calling a Civil Defence emergency. Several meetings were held during the afternoon.

The MetService has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the South Island for the weekend.

Rain, snow dumped on the district

The large complex low pressure system which brought misery to Mid Canterbury yesterday resulted in huge rain and snow levels for the district.

Ashburton received more than a month’s rainfall in one day, and Mt Hutt was on its way to getting a metre of fresh snow.

About 78 millimetres of rain fell in Ashburton in the 12 hours to 3.30pm, which compares to the long-term average for the whole month of July of 64 millimetres. Methven was completely swamped, receiving 91.2 millimetres in the same time frame.

Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade members responded to two callouts during the day. The first was to flooding in the lower loungeroom of a home, the second to flooding around a house at Staveley.

“You have got past the worst of it,” said MetService forecaster Tuporo Marsters about 3.30pm.

However, rain would continue falling and there would be showers today, with strong southerly winds.

Mt Hutt Ski Area general manger operations James Urquhart said it was a “full-on storm” which had brought about 50 centimetres of snow. Light sleet fell briefly in the afternoon, but as temperatures dropped more snow was forecast and altogether there could be one to 1.2 metres.

“We have every piece of artillery we can find to make it happen,” he said with respect to getting the mountain open on Sunday.

About 20 “storm trooper” staff were on the mountain, out running lifts and clearing snow whenever the weather allowed them to.

A helicopter was on standby for avalanche bombing on Sunday morning and a bulldozer and grader were at the bottom of the access road.

“They have a lot of work ahead of them,” Urquhart said.

Mill Creek turns into ‘a raging torrent’

On Thursday, Mill Creek was a gentle stream meandering past Jill and Graham Barker’s home; yesterday it was a raging torrent, running bank to bank and flowing across their backyard.

The Ascot Place residents watched as flood water rose and dozens of plants were washed away, along with pots, tubs and garden ornaments. They’ve been flooded before, but this time the water levels were much higher.

They’re philosophical about the loss of their garden, saying they can plant again. They’re more concerned about the danger the raging creek could pose to children along its unfenced lengths.

“We’ve all got water in our yards along here but we’re all fenced, so at least we’re safe in terms of anyone falling in the creek,” Jill said.

She’s more concerned about the risk to children in the camping ground on the opposite side of the creek. There is no fence

between the camp land and the creek bank and with it raging at more than two metres deep, she says it poses a risk to children.

“The creek is raging, absolutely raging. If anyone fell in they’d be drowned,” she said.

The Barkers have no concerns about the flood waters flowing through their home; it’s on higher ground but say the flood should be an alert that the Ashburton District Council needs to ensure all properties bordering the creek are fenced.

Sandbags the ultimate protection

Ashburton Contracting Ltd staff spent most of yesterday shovelling sand, struggling to meet demand for sandbags to protect properties from water.

For some home owners yesterday, sandbags were the only thing that stood between them and flood waters flowing through their homes.

Several Ashburton Contracting staff spent most of the day filling bags with sand to meet a steady demand from fire services and businesses and home owners.

It was an unprecedented event, quarry and transport manager Maurice Wotton said and one that saw the company heading to

Christchurch mid afternoon for extra bags.

Well over 1000 bags were filled, he said, with local seed companies helping top up the back supplies.

And while other rain events had involved a small number of requests for sandbags, yesterday the demand was never-ending, Wotton said.

Most of the bags were going to private homes with ACL staff running steady deliveries all over town.

“People just needed a bit of help,” he said.

Many of the homes where bags were delivered were looking at deep water across lawns and in some cases it was flowing through garages. The flooded properties were in pockets all over town, Wotton said.

He called in extra staff from other ACL departments and said a local landscaping company had also pitched in to help.

Late yesterday staff were still filling bags although demand had dropped, to create a backlog in case of another deluge.

Emergency services flat out

The wailing of the fire station siren became a regular fixture in the Ashburton streets yesterday as emergency services responded to a steady stream of call-outs.

By 5pm there had been 22 fire brigade call-outs from the Burnett Street station, two from Rakaia, two from Methven and one from Hinds.

Volunteer Support Officer Murray Cairns said the majority of the call-outs within town had been to assist with flooding and “fortunately nothing really big or serious”.

At the flooding call-outs they attended, Cairns said the work had largely consisted of sandbagging and helping to lift objects away from the water.

He said that any attempts to pump water out of flooded sites would have been hampered by surface water and the persistence of the rain.

Many of the flooded sites had been garages.

After receiving a number of calls about flooding yesterday, Ashburton Police were urging motorists to avoid travelling.

Police received “a number of reports” regarding cars stuck in flooding on Thompsons Track near Lauriston, which were attended to by volunteers from Rakaia fire station.

Police said the Rakaia Highway, Waimate Highway and Hinds Highway had also been problematic, with multiple reports of heavy flooding.

By 5pm, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) had closed several of Canterbury’s major roads, including SH79 between Fairlie and Geraldine and SH 77 between Ashburton and Methven.

In a statement, police said they “strongly advised motorists to avoid any unnecessary travel.”

If travelling, police warned drivers to be particularly aware.

“Take extra care on the roads, increase your following distance and slow down.”

Despite the heavy rain across Mid Canterbury yesterday, farmers in general escaped the worst of it.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Michael Salvesen said as far as he was aware it was business as usual.

“I’ve not heard of anything dramatic, although we’ve still got tomorrow (Saturday) to go.

“There wasn’t as much as was initially suggested and it seemed to go through quicker than was originally thought,” he said.

Thanks to warnings given days before the rain hit, farmers

were prepared for the onslaught.

“Some people were calving so it (the rain) probably wasn’t what they wanted.

“The main thing is to keep stock fed. If they’re well fed, they’re generally pretty happy, even if they might look a bit cold.”

Other than farmers near the coast, not too many have begun lambing yet and those who have started would be well prepared, he said.

“They’re used to storms at this time of year so, it wouldn’t have been anything out of the ordinary.”

“It’s a good thing it’s not cold.

We didn’t get the freezing temperatures. It’s when you get the gale force winds and it’s snowing, that’s when it gets difficult.”

He said those who had begun calving early – mainly those nearer the coast – would have brought their calves into shelter to keep them out of the worst of the rain.

“But that’s farming, you’ve got to deal with all of the conditions.”

Buckets out at library

Buckets on standby, Ashburton Public Library staff listened with dread as heavy rain began to fall yesterday morning.

By 11am five buckets had been placed around the interior, balanced on shelves, strategically positioned to capture water dripping from the ceiling.

Library manager Jill Watson said it was the standard outcome of heavy rain, and the main concern was when leaks sprung

over shelving as it threatened to dampen books. “It was a design fault in the original building that the roof is too flat,” Watson said.

“Overnight we might put some tarps over the areas we think might be affected during the night.”

And it was unlikely staff would have a reprieve from the situation in the short term, as it could be another four years before they moved into a new library which is being planned by the Ashburton District Council.

Watters Cup postponed, relocated

The showcase of Mid Canterbury rugby, the Watters Cup, is on hold – for a day at least.

The rain bomb that fell on the region yesterday left almost every rugby field in the district under water and with a Ranfurly Shield match in two weeks at the Showgrounds, the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union were understandably hesitant to do any damage to the pitch.

They announced yesterday afternoon that the decision had been made to cancel all rugby from Under 18 down and to make some adjustments to the finals in both the Senior B competition between Mt Somers and Southern and also the Watters Cup final between Rakaia and Southern.

Rakaia and Southern are set down to battle it out on Sunday afternoon while Mt Somers and Southern will lock horns next weekend, with a venue still to be confirmed.

Mid Canterbury Rugby boss, Ian Patterson, said the decision was quite easy in the end.

“There were two big factors in it,” Patterson said.

“Obviously the conditions were one, but also player safety – it can be pretty dangerous out there with surface water about.”

The wet weather yesterday has seen the Watters Cup final set down for today, shifted to tomorrow and relocated to Mayfield.

Union representatives travelled around the region yesterday to check out the suitability of some of the fields and settled that Mayfield was the only place they could hold some confidence of getting a match in over the weekend.

“There’s a field out there with no flooding on which is encour-

aging.” A final decision will be made tomorrow morning as to whether the match plays out or not with more bad weather predicted but Patterson felt confident that rugby would be played.

While the Ranfurly Shield match played a role in the decision over venue, it also had some say in when the Watters Cup final

would be played.

Monitoring players was a key factor with a match against Southland ahead for the representative players before the Ranfurly Shield.

“Probably more important though, was the fact we needed to be aware of the rural factor to our rugby makeup.

“A lot of these guys work on farms who are going to be pretty busy in this weather.

Bag a bargain for a good cause

Outside the weather raged, but inside the welcome was warm yesterday, when Hospice Mid Canterbury opened its new Tancred Street shop.

For the hospice team the shop was one more milestone in their establishment journey and it was a crucial milestone in that it would provide the organisation with a steady flow of funds, said trustee Jane Wright.

Some people might ask, ‘why a shop’, but when we talk to established hospices they all say time and again they wish they’d set up a hospice shop sooner,” she said.

Hospice Mid Canterbury was established in May 2015 and is now providing an increasing range of services for its clients.

Trustees identified the Tancred Street shop late last year as the ideal site for its opportunity shop and watched it transformed by Bradford Building.

“A lot of hours have gone into the preparation of the shop and thanks to our incredibly generous community we’ve received support in so many ways from so many individuals,” Wright said.

Ashburton mayor Donna Favel described the opening of the shop as an incredible achieve-

ment for a small team of people over a short space of time.

“It’s through the work and dedication of the hospice team we’re able to provide this service to people at the end of their lives.

In what could be one of her last official engagements in her political career, Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew cut the official ribbon, saying the hospice movement was a perfect example of a social enterprise.

Over the coming years statistics indicated that demand for its service would grow by 50 per cent, she said.

“People want to have choice at the end of their life and they can have this through expert palliative care and support. What you have is a social enterprise that provides an opportunity for people who have money to spend or have things to give, to support a social outcome.”

Goodhew admitted she was an ‘op shopper’ and said she enjoyed knowing the money she spent would help others.

Prior to yesterday’s opening she spent time browsing the racks and had spotted a coat that was likely to leave in her handbag.

“This shop will go gangbusters, it’s so classy,” she said.

Hospice Mid Canterbury’s op shop is now open after Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew cut the official ribbon yesterday. She was assisted by shop committee chairman Philip Kerr, shop manager Tracey Fuller and shop committee member Barbara Redmond.

No shortage of writing The Ashburton Writers’ Group received a record 129 entries for its annual competition for children. Reporter and photographer Susan Sandys was at the prizegiving this week.

A

shburton Writers’ Group annual competition judge Janet Benfell said she had had a “lovely time” reading the wide range of stories and poems entered.

She was addressing the competition prizegiving ceremony at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum this week. “It’s made me feel young again and I hope you young writers will continue to be writers for ever and ever,” she said.

However, she did take the young writers to task for their poor use of the apostrophe. She held up a card with an apostrophe on it and asked if anyone knew what it was.

“It’s not an emoji,” she said.

Someone was able to answer

the question and Benfell gave a quick lesson with examples on how it should be used.

President Julie Fechney thanked participants for their wide range of story submissions.

Topics for the record 129 entries had varied and winning entries even included one on a murderess mayor.

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel presented the awards and joked she did not think the story was an instructional manual.

She said councils were given the task of looking after important things such as water and roads, but it was really important also to hear from the community through this sort of competition, about its thoughts and what was in people’s hearts.

ife is harsh in the forest with the extreme weather and rushing rivers, but for little creatures it’s their least concern for there is a much greater, brutal, shady animal roaming the dark forests and that is the WOLF. Crunch! Crunch go the padded paws of the wolves as they wade through the knee high snow looking for a meal. Suddenly they come to a stop…the ears of the alpha male swerve around like radar dishes. The alpha gives a few yips and runs off into the dense forest. The betas, following through the snowflakes that are softly falling to earth and dodging the bare trees, soon see what the alpha saw, a large caribou munching peacefully on some moss growing on a large, round boulder. Suddenly the betas bound over to the caribou, the caribou’s reflexes are quick and it started sprinting off to the rocky mountains hoping to lose the vicious savages.

Mayor’s Ultimate Plan

ig Ben rang for the twelfth time that night. The church was silent as the mayor’s black car pulled up against the church’s wet sidewalk, the mayor climbed out of his car. He wore a black coat and a bowler hat of the same colour, his scarf was grey and his hair worn out. There was a suspicious bulge in his pocket. The mayor banged the heavy metal knocker on the church door, there was no answer and he knocked a second time, still no answer. He barged through the unlocked giant wooden door and stormed up the stairs to the choir loft. Behind the elaborate giant organ he noticed the hunched dark figure of the bishop who then leapt into action and threw his heavy bible with great force at the mayor.

The mayor felt slight pain in his right arm, he put his good hand in his pocket and pulled out a razor sharp boning knife. As the moon shone through the window, the bishop noticed its glistening blade. The uninvited guest, filled with rage, leapt onto the bishop and forced the knife into his stomach. The bishop screamed in agony as he felt his life coming to an end, his warm blood leaving a pool on the floor of the choir loft.

The mayor heaved the body down the creaky staircase and loaded it into the boot of his car. He strained and struggled to shove the dead body in the nearby river, then sped back to the church. The mayor felt strangely calm as he lumbered back up the stairs and scrambled through the church’s old cabinets.

As an afterthought he cast his eyes over the old sheets of music on the organ and found what he was looking for, hidden in plain sight. The mayor grabbed the blueprints, concealed them in his coat pocket and sped off into the darkness.

The sun shone bright the next morning and the world knew nothing of the ugliness that had occurred the night before. Only time would tell if the bishop’s body was ever to be discovered. The mayor had slept little that night but was excited as he arrived at the council buildings just after 9am. He submitted the blueprints to a shrivelled up lady behind a plastic screen, and took himself out for breakfast to celebrate. His multimillion dollar casino to be built next door to the church would make him a very wealthy man.

The mayor never noticed the woman robed in black enter the police station across the road.

The woman approached the front desk, her hands shaking. “Sister, are you alright?” asked a young officer. “Not at all,” she replied. “I witnessed the most horrific thing last night, I’d like to report a murder.”

Waiting for the Unknown

The alpha wolf looking for a great vantage point runs over to a steep, cliff face and spots the other wolves running like the wind. As soon as the caribou makes its way into the clearing the alpha races to the caribou’s right and drives it into a corner of the Alaskan mountain. Soon the betas arrive panting, with their rough tongues hanging over the side of their sharp teeth. Once they caught their breath they snarl at the terrified caribou, it steps back slamming into the rocky mountain.

My Father left us for an army uniform, With empty words of reassurance tumbling from him.

He could make no promises; He could be dead.

My Parent, My role-model, My life-long friend, Lying lifeless in a place far from home.

As soon as the alpha yips, it bounds over to the massive mammal and pounces, with its teeth digging into the neck. The caribou shakes and shakes trying to knock the creature off its back but the wolf gives one more terrifying bite, the caribou’s legs wobble like jelly, then collapse.

Taken by the enemy, As a lowly prisoner, ‘Twas the last we heard of him.

They don’t give a damn about prettified families.

Now for the hard stage, getting the corpse to the waiting young ones in the den. Two betas are called to help tug it across the desolate forest floor. They drag the limp body of the unfortunate caribou through a deep hole in a clearing to the waiting cubs. Without warning an opposing group of wolves appears in the clearing. Two betas throw themselves against the dusty den, suddenly the watching alpha spots them and claws at the eyes of the enemy, they run away growling. The alpha gives a small yap as if he’s saying, “Who’s ready for a feast?”

Though the second great combat is over, We cannot rejoice, nor sense peace, For the war will not be for us, Until we know what happened to him.

I must quell these hateful thoughts, I hate to remember his voice: “I love you, my son.”

Oh, Dad, where are you now.

Scientist won’t use this product An antibacterial product found in Colgate Total toothpaste should not be sold over the counter in New Zealand, says an environmental chemist.

Canterbury University senior lecturer Sally Gaw says she does not use triclosan, which is found in Colgate Total toothpaste, baby wipes, soaps, sports clothes and toys.

She said the chemical potentially had important uses but should not be used in homes, as a study had shown the benefits are no better than washing your hands with soap and water.

Gaw said triclosan should not be sold over the counter in New Zealand.

Popular scientist Michelle Dickinson, who goes under the guise of Nanogirl, has also tweeted on the issue.

dence. She said there was no scientific evidence that triclosan in soap was more effective at preventing the spread of germs as plain soap and water, but there is disease prevention benefit from using triclosan in toothpaste.

She said some of the research papers on the US Food and Drug Administration website showed the science only seems to have been tested on rats and mice.

“The studies that show negative affects have been very short-term experiments using high doses of triclosan.

“I don’t believe enough research has been car-

ried out yet to make wide sweeping statements about dangers to human health,” Dickinson said.

She said the doses used in toothpaste are very low compared with the rat studies and also shown to prevent gingivitis (a form of gum disease).

Enthusiastic toothbrushers are being warned to stay away from Colgate Total toothpaste, or at least to use it sparingly.

The toothpaste is one of the few toiletries in New Zealand that still uses triclosan, an antibacterial commonly found in soaps, tooth-

pastes and body washes until September last year, when the US Food and Drug Administration banned it from soap because of possible health risks.

Triclosan has been linked to changes in hormone function, liver and kidney damage, and is a suspected carcinogen.

Consumer NZ researcher Jessica Wilson said the FDA ruling had seen it quickly disappear from many toiletry products, but not all.

“The publicity on triclosan has prompted manufacturers to start removing it from their products, so we have seen it disappearing from handwashes. However, it’s still used in everything from hand soaps to toothpaste, and it’s permitted in our cosmetics at a concentration of 0.3 per cent.”

One of the most commonly available products containing it is Colgate Total toothpaste.

The antibacterial agent can be useful for fighting diseases such as gingivitis, but Wilson said it wasn’t needed for everyday use.

Synthetic cannabis warning after deaths Seven people are dead after using synthetic cannabis this month in Auckland, with ambulance staff saying they also see 20 users a day suffering “life-threatening effects” from the illegal drug.

The deaths have prompted the Chief Coroner and police to issue a public warning about synthetic cannabis.

Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall said the seven dead are believed to have used synthetic cannabis recently or were found with it on them.

“I’ve also been advised by St John that there have been a significant number of non-fatal cases where people have been hospitalised after using the drug, which is known to cause potentially fatal seizures,” Marshall said. “While the police and

coronial investigations are still at an early stage, and the final causes of death have yet to be established, the number of cases where synthetic cannabis appear to have been a contributing factor has prompted me to issue this public warning,” she said.

Police are releasing CCTV footage that shows a man in the Auckland CBD last year unable to stand after smoking synthetic cannabis.

Detective Inspector Gary Lendrum said police are releasing the footage to highlight the effects of synthetic cannabis.

“We have grave concerns as users don’t know what poisonous chemicals they are potentially putting into their bodies when they’re smoking this drug,” he said.

Lendrum said police have searched multiple properties and arrested numerous people across Auckland as they crack down on the drug. One synthetic cannabis operation in Avondale has resulted in 12 arrests over the past few months.

“It is a dangerous, illegal substance and we will arrest those who are selling this harmful drug and place them before the courts,” he said.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne said he was “desperately concerned” that illegal, synthetic drugs were leading to deaths.

He also said that he warned of the consequences of having an unregulated market when synthetic drugs were banned in 2014 until they could pass a rig-

Cop attack ‘horrific’ The police officers’ union has condemned as “horrific and cowardly” the attack on a Rotorua policeman which put him in hospital. The officer was hit in the head with some sort of weapon as he tried to make an arrest in the suburb of Owhata on Thursday night. The officer was knocked unconscious and is now in Waikato Hospital in a sedated and stable condition. “This is the second serious assault on a police officer this week, after a constable was bashed up to 15 times over the head in the main street of Morrinsville on Monday.

‘Justine didn’t have to die’

BY LIZ BURKE The head of the Minneapolis Police Department has made a surprising admission about the effect of the police shooting of Australian woman Justine Damond on the city.

In her first public appearance since the Saturday night incident, Police Chief Janee Harteau admitted Ms Damond’s death at the hands of a policeman had now made people scared to call 911 for help.

Police records have revealed officer Mohamed Noor shot and killed bride-to-be Ms Damond only two minutes after police arrived at the alleyway behind her house, after she rang to report a suspected sexual assault.

Ms Harteau acknowledged there was fear in the community around calling police.

“Although disheartening I understand the fear and why it exists,” she said.

“This has had a negative impact on the community trust we’ve built.”

However, Ms Harteau said the shooting was “one individual’s actions” and didn’t repre-

sent the attitude and culture of the city’s law enforcement.

Addressing media in Minnaepolis, Ms Harteau said Ms Damond’s death “should not have happened”.

“Justine did not have to die,” she said.

An ongoing investigation has not yet revealed what compelled the inexperienced officer to draw his weapon, reach

over his partner and shoot Ms Damond through the police car’s window.

Ms Harteau condemned Officer Noor’s actions and distanced herself and her police department from him.

He has so far refused to be interviewed over the shooting.

“Having all the information that is available, while recognising there is an open investi-

gation, I believe the actions in question go against who we are as a department, how we train, and the expectations we are as a department.

“These were the actions of one individual.”

The city’s most senior police officer would not guarantee Officer Noor would be stripped of his badge, but said she had assured Ms Damond’s family that justice would be served.

The damning comments from Noor’s boss come as a neighbour has shed light on the officer’s character and reputation in the townhouse complex where he lived with his large family.

Forklift driver Chris Miller, 49, told News Corp Australia he knew Noor as a nervous individual with a misogynistic attitude.

“He is extremely nervous ... he is a little jumpy ... he doesn’t really respect women, the least thing you say to him can set him off,” he said.

DuckTales returning Disney’s most famous duck family is preparing for a highly anticipated comeback. Massive drug bust

By Mark Morri Three Australian men face the prospect of life in prison if convicted over an alleged A$255 million ($274m) drug scheme using a small plane to take a bumper payload of the killer drug ice 13,000km from California to Melbourne.

Sydney man Jim Soukoulis is allegedly at the centre of the foiled plan to buy a light aircraft in the US and strip the seats out of it before it was to be flown solo by a 72-year-old pilot halfway around the world stuffed with more than 250kg of ice.

A tip-off in January this year led to a six-month joint investigation by the Australian Federal Police and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency, which resulted in the arrests of the Australian trio and the seizure of the plane, 255kg of crystal methamphetamine and more than A$2 million in cash.

Soukoulis, 52, from Zetland, appeared in Central Local Court yesterday charged with money laundering and was extradited to Victoria to appear in a Melbourne court yesterday.

Police will allege the “ice” seized in California was destined for Australian addicts, with an estimated street value of about $A255 million.

Soukoulis was arrested at Sydney International Airport and charged in relation to the seizure of S$2.4 million cash in Mildura hidden in a prime mover driven by a drug addict truck driver in April this year. He was granted bail but was rearrested yesterday.

It follows the arrest earlier this month of Hugh Gorman, 72, at Melbourne Airport with police alleging he was planning to travel to America.

The last of the trio, 58-yearold Melbourne accountant Peter Caluzzi was arrested yesterday at his Sunshine firm PC Accounting Services.

Witnesses reported seeing plain-clothed police leading the man away.

The small plane nearly clipped at least one car on the highway after being forced to land due to a mechanical failure soon after take-off from Brookhaven Airport. Jailed for consensual sex A British woman and a Pakistani man have been sentenced to one year in prison for having an affair while on a trip to Dubai. The pair met on Facebook and been in contact for three years before she flew to stay with him for a week in Dubai in 2016, when they had consensual sex, the Daily Mail reported. Having sex outside of marriage is strictly prohibited in the UAE, and those who take part in extramarital relationships risk prison sentences and deportation.

Quake kills two At least two people have been killed and a number have been injured in a powerful earthquake that rattled Greek islands and Turkey’s Aegean coast. An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 6.7 has struck off the Turkish coast, triggering a tsunami in the Mediterranean. Beachfront hotels full of holidaymakers were flooded in the coastal city of Marmaris, Turkey, while the effects were also felt on islands such as Crete. The tremor struck at 1.31am local time approximately 10km south of Bodrum, Turkey and 16km east of the party island of Kos, Greece.

Just part of the massive crystal methamphetamine haul nabbed by Australian police.

It is alleged Gorman, a qualified pilot, was to pose as a holiday-maker and “island hop” 13,000km across the Pacific Ocean in the six-seater plane from California to a rural Victorian airport.

“Now I’m not a good flyer at the best of times but that’s certainly not a plane I would have liked to have been on,” AFP Superintendent Krissy Barrett said.

“We’ll allege that there was a sophisticated concealment plan for the drugs ... that would have

involved the removal of the passenger seats.

“We think that the drugs were destined to be distributed along the east coast of Australia.”

Who was to collect the drugs when they touched down in Australia is still under investigation.

All three have been charged with conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs, namely methamphetamine, and money laundering offences.

The joint investigation began

after the DEA received intelligence relating to a conspiracy to export drugs to Australia.

On June 15, agents from the DEA Santa Rosa Resident Office conducted a search warrant on a storage facility in northern California.

About 255kg of a white crystalline substance was found and tested positive for methamphetamine. The substance was seized, and investigations continued in Australia to locate the intended destination for the drugs. - AAP

H

ow lucky are we to live in such a place that when the chips are down everyone downs tools and gets ready to do their bit to help?

When the rain came yesterday, and boy did it come, Ashburton copped a hammering.

We were stretched to our limits.

Our incredible fire brigade boys gave up everything else in their day and joined into a continuous circle of volunteer rescue and assistance.

These are everyday guys and gals. People you pass walking down the street who, at the sound of a siren or a beep of their pager, drop everything and race to our rescue.

Yesterday will have tested their resolve. No sooner had they returned from one job it felt like the alarm was off again and back out they went. But each time they jumped in their gear and went and did their job.

Our police officers were the same. They too got stretched to their absolute limits manning closed roads and helping those in need.

But the real stars of yesterday’s storm were those who fronted up at ACL and played a role in the sandbagging operation.

They went all day and didn’t look like they were anywhere near stopping late last night.

Sand was flowing out of the shed like it was going out of fashion and if anyone was tired, or getting over the monotonous task at hand they never once looked like showing it while we were there.

They actually had a bounce in their step and said how they were just happy to be able to do their bit to help.

And it’s things like that which can often make a small community like ours great.

No matter what might be going on, the desire to help each other out is as strong as ever.

Especially in times of need.

Yesterday could have been a lot worse than what it was for Ashburton.

We got pushed around a bit and we got tested to the max, but we withstood it all and will come out on the other side better off, with more knowledge and understanding of what a significant event like this one can require.

But at the end of the day it’s down to those who go out of their way to help.

They’re the ones who kept us ticking over.

t was a fiery week-end for some of the politicos, with random rockets ricochetting across the firmament even though, it has to said, accompanied also by a number of damp squibs, which tended to take the edge off the sparkling excitement.

For the Greens, Metiria Turei very publicly admitted that long ago (about 25 years after the event, to be precise), as a struggling single mother, she rorted the welfare system by claiming to be on her own financially while actually receiving further funds from her flatmates.

Reaction to this “damning admission” has predictably set off a fire-storm of social media comment from which Metiria has emerged as the worst type of bludger off the State right up to heroine status, only marginally less admired than Florence Nightingale.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged”, might be the way to go on that one.

Interestingly, however, Paula Bennett, deputy PM and herself a graduate of the single mother school of Welfare -– though a squeakily honest one – had some very sisterly things to say of Turei’s predicament.

No blame game for Paula; no indeed. Very much the reverse.

“So many of us have been through that experience”. (along those lines). I n fact, so sympathetic has the DPM seemed that some of the

more cynical members of the media – and there are a few of that sort “out there” – have suggested Paula’s sisterly concern for Metiria could still be politically driven.

The theory goes: if, after September 23, National needs, urgently, the assistance of another party to form a Government, the Greens – swallowing a few principles as they did so – might be available and prepared to join National in some kind of “flexible coalition”, but which might be less appealing to the Greenery if Bennett had recently been seen and heard “slagging off” the co-leader of the Greens for her self-acknowledged dishonesty.

I’m not sure about that. Don’t you feel Paula has no ulterior motive in reacting positively to Metiria’s dilemma, merely genuine sympathy? Still, “Dirty Politics” are never far from the surface.

Meanwhile, at just about the same moment as Turei was “coming clean” with her guilty secret – and she finished by somehow calling Winston “racist” – the leader of NZ First was letting-off a few thunder-flashes

of his own. Racist” is a maddening red rag to a maverick, and Peters is no exception. Despite his own origins, he has strong feelings about the inadequacies, as he sees them, of his Maori brothers.

He does not, therefore, regard criticism of the behaviour of many of them as anything but honest comment which, of course, it is.

I think it’s fair to say that Winston continues to avoid being caught up in the claws of political correctness. Much of his ever-growing popular appeal is the result of this resistance to following pre-conceived lines that so often hobble otherwise purposeful politicians.

Saying what’s on your mind remains an attractive way to go however “risky” it may now be for a politician – or anyone else, for that matter.

On another tack, I doubt whether Winston can now remember just how many “bottom lines” he has established which, as I commented in an earlier article, is going to make him a difficult coalition partner to sign up but no less valuable for that.

Presumably, his deputy, Ms Fox, will be in close attendance ready to remind him should he appear to be about to cross a bottom – and therefore impassable – line.

Also with something on his mind these past few days, that stalwart of the no-holds barred comment, Sir Robert Jones, box-

ing aficionado and businessman of high-rise proportions. His beef is beggars. He wants to ban them.

In his pithy and pointed piece, he has little sympathy for “fat Maoris” who “sprawl in front of doorways” intimidating passersby or for any other potential scrounger he comes across on the streets of Auckland and elsewhere. His sentiments seem also to be politically correct-free, but then he has rarely been anything less than aggressive in his public utterances.

As far as this latest “campaign” is concerned he is not the only one voicing such an opinion Another contestant in the forthcoming battle, “Opportunist”, Gareth Morgan, seems to be prepared simply to dole out sums of money to supporters prepared to vote for him without their doing anything more than turning up to collect the loot.

As a “policy” it may be short on political gravitas but its attraction makes such a consideration entirely unnecessary.

In the words of that old song, “The temperature’s rising...... “ and the language deteriorating.

Judge orders Love property be sold The Plimmerton house at the centre of Ngatata Love’s fraud case must be sold, as it is tainted by the proceeds of crime and its value is eroding as the mortgage is nearly $100,000 in arrears, a judge has ruled.

Last October, former Treaty negotiator and Wellington-based Maori leader, Love was jailed for two years and six months after being found guilty of obtaining significant sums by deception.

He and Skiffington used a $1.5 million payment from a land developer, given as a premium for access to valuable land owned by the Wellington Tenths Trust, to pay for the house.

Love chaired the trust at the time and former trustees gave evidence at the trial that they had never been told of the payment.

Wellington High Court Justice Karen Clark has ordered the official assignee to sell the Moana Road property, valued at $1.75m, after an application from the Commissioner of Police.

A restraining order on the house was granted in 2014, while Love was appealing his conviction and sentence, which was ul-

The mortgage on the property is about $1m, and arrears as at June 22 this year totalled $96,500, Westpac Bank told the court.

Earlier this week, Justice Clark ruled that assets belonging to Skiffington and Strategic Direc-

tionz, a trust of which she is the sole director and shareholder, are now frozen, pending the outcome of an attempt by the Tenths Trust to pursue Skiffington for unjust enrichment.

Skiffington was charged alongside Love, but was granted a permanent stay as she was declared medically unfit to stand trial. Her lawyer was successful in getting the first hearing set down for the sale order adjourned due to her deteriorating health and was concerned she was unable to accurately recall details of the transactions from years earlier. - NZME

“Progress is moving at a rapid pace and we have a high level of confidence that the majority of people will have received settlement offers by the end of this year.”

He said 51 per cent of all residential buildings had been assessed as of the end of June and insurers were focusing on the most damaged areas.

The time between assessment and settlement offer for residential properties was typically between four and 12 weeks, Grafton said.

Less than 30 per cent of the value of the insurance claims stemming from the Kaikoura quakes have been paid out – eight months after the event.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Kaikoura on November 14, cutting off access to the town and causing widespread damage in the upper South Island and lower North Island.

According to the Insurance Council, total private insurance claims for the event were $1.88 billion as of June 30.

Fonterra said it plans to spend $150 million on building two new cream cheese plants at its plant in Darfield, where the co-operative already operates a huge milk powder making facility.

The Darfield plant – which opened in 2012 – already makes high quality instant and regular whole milk powder for export to more than 40 markets across South East Asia, China and the Middle East.

With cream cheese undergoing a steady surge in popularity in Asia, the new project will see the first plant completed in 2018 with a second to follow in either 2019 or 2020, Fonterra said.

From farmland to commercial success Today Ashburton’s Business Estate is a thriving business hub, sections are selling rapidly with a steady flow of new businesses joining those who have called the estate home for several years.

Ten years ago, however, the business estate was just 120 acres of farmland, home to little more than sheep.

Some of that land had been owned by the Ashburton District Council for several years and was leased to a neighbouring farmer, other blocks were progressively bought by the council as they became available.

Knowing its Riverside Industrial Park was rapidly running out of space, the council for many years had the idea of a large scale, purpose-built, business park on its radar.

Those plans gained momentum and by 2004, when the council was working on a large scale development plan for resi-

dential, industrial and commercial growth across the district, it tagged this land as a future business park.

Plans were unveiled in April 2006 in a series of open days with more than 170 people turning up to check out what was proposed – a park that would be home to a range of businesses and light industry and would include a small commercial zone.

The park was also seen as the logical new home for Ashburton’s inner town shunting area. Its relocation had been on the council’s wish list for many years.

The council’s plans fired the imagination of many, but not all of its neighbours were happy about the prospect of a business park on what had been their rural doorstep.

As the council worked to change the zoning of the park land, it battled objectors with 19 people putting their case for

the park project to be canned during a hearing before an independent commissioner.

Approval, with conditions, was given to the project, kick-starting a development that is progressively bringing new wealth to the Ashburton District.

Development began with earth mounds formed to screen the area from residents, services were laid on, trees were planted and roads formed.

By the time then prime minister John Key cut the ribbon and officially opened the park in April 2011, sections had been sold.

It was envisaged the park would meet the district’s business and industrial needs for around 30 years, but six years down the track, stage one is rapidly filling and work on stage two is on the council’s drawing board.

Cup final already memorable

Through forces out of anybody’s control, this year’s Watters Cup is bound to go down as a memorable one and the game has not even started yet.

Due to the torrential rain that has been pounding Mid Canterbury in the past few days, this year’s Watters Cup has been moved to Mayfield, and will be played tomorrow.

Considering the conditions, Southern co-coach Michael Ellis was not against the change.

“It won’t be a bad thing as it will

give a few of the boys a bit of time to clean up,” he said.

“It is a bit of a nuisance but it shouldn’t affect us.”

With rain considered a great leveller on the rugby paddock, as well as a boost to forward dominated sides, some might expect Southern to now have the edge.

However, Ellis said he doesn’t expect it to have much of an effect.

“You have still got to put the effort in,” he said.

“We can hope the conditions slow down their backs a bit.”

Southern’s bench boasts six

forwards, but Ellis was quick to highlight it was not some clever tactical decision, but a numbers decision.

“We can hope it will give us an advantage with how the game might go, but we will see on the day,” he said.

With a fully fit side raring to go, Ellis said all he hopes for now is for the rain to stay away and a big crowd to show up.

“There is nothing worse than watching rugby in the rain,” he said.

For Rakaia, it will be their second final this year that has been

shifted from its planned date after the Combined Competition final was also shifted to a Sunday.

Rakaia will be welcoming back club stalwart Andrew Letham, who last played for Rakaia in that match.

He returns to the side in what is a reshuffled midfield compared to when the sides clashed two weeks ago.

Letham will play at centre, with Nete Caucau in his usual secondfifth place.

Young gun Tom Hanham-Carter moves back to first-five, while Dan Fransen plays at fullback.

Hat-trick hero from their last encounter, Maleli Sau, has dropped to the bench, carrying a minor knock.

The line-up could still be subject to change depending on player’s availability with the change in day.

For co-coach Wayne Foxcroft, losing a second final in the year would be unthinkable.

“We can’t have two second places in one year, one was bad enough,” he said.

“We have just got to do everything in our power to make it happen.”

Crotty’s return ‘crucial’ Four members of the All Blacks tight five are back to bolster the Crusaders in their Super Rugby quarter-final but they are talking up the return of all-purpose test back Ryan Crotty.

Coach Scott Robertson expects second five-eighth Crotty to be as influential as ever in tonight’s clash with the Highlanders in Christchurch.

The 28-year-old hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury early in the first test against the British and Irish Lions a month ago.

Crotty’s absence was keenly felt in last week’s 31-22 setback against the Hurricanes, a result which prevented a perfect season for the Crusaders and left them second on the overall standings behind the Lions.

With rain and bitterly cold conditions expected for the southern play-off, Crotty’s cool head and decision-making will be highly valued.

“He’s huge for us,” Robertson said.

“Obviously the experience and his ability to understand the game with the calls and defensively he shows the way.

“We’ve got to be better in a lot of areas.

“Clear and obvious at the breakdown and just trust our system a lot more than we have.”

The forecast has left Robertson more wary than ever of the Highlanders’ ability to successfully launch box kicks through All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith.

The Crusaders didn’t

cope with such methods well in the tour loss to the Lions, also in miserable weather.

has responded by shifting David Havili from the midfield to fullback, where he has thrived for much of the year.

Meanwhile the Highlanders’ preparation for their Super Rugby quarter-final against the Crusaders has been hampered, after their flight was cancelled yesterday afternoon.

Wild weather down south saw the Highlanders’ Air New Zealand flight from Dunedin to Christchurch called off, leaving Highlanders first five Lima Sopoaga to propose the game be held at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

With some roads closed as well, Highlanders loose forward Elliot Dixon jokingly suggested that a boat might be the best option to get the team to the game.

Several Highlanders fans have also been left in the dark about how they will get to the game on Saturday night.

One thing is for sure, the delays will be less than ideal for the Highlanders’ build-up for their winnertakes-all clash.

On the eve of their quarter-final against the Stormers in Cape Town, rookie winger Alaimalo has labelled McKenzie an “unreal” player capable of unlocking any Super Rugby defence.

Naholo re-signs All Blacks wing Waisake Naholo has re-signed with the Highlanders for next year. Naholo, off contract at the end of this season, had been courted by Chiefs and Taranaki coach Colin Cooper who will take over from Dave Rennie in 2018.

Edwards makes SI darts team

Ashburton darts player Raewyn Edwards is getting ready to take on the best that Australia and the North Island have to offer.

Edwards will be part of the South Island team that will be travelling to Dubbo at the end of October for nine days of competition against the seven states from Australia, and the North Island.

It will be Edwards’ second time at the event, after competing for the first time last year.

Edwards said she has been playing darts for around 14 years, but only decided to start entering tournaments and competitions in the past few years.

“I am a really competitive person so I enjoy entering the tournaments,” she said.

“I do find I still get nervous at times which can be hard to get over.”

When it comes to competition, it is not the Australians that Edwards finds the most difficult to play.

“The players from the North Island are most difficult to play against.

“We know how they play and they know how we play and there is no gap in skill,” she said.

Edwards said she tries to get out to the garage as often as she can to practise, but said it can be tough to find motivation in the cold winter months.

At the same event last year, Edwards placed in the top eight in the singles, and was also part of a New Zealand team that beat Australia last year.

Due to a lack of financial support around the sport of darts, Edwards is currently putting together a fundraising raffle with the hope of raising the tally of just over $1000 she needs.

Fox, Hendry in contention Steady first rounds from Michael Hendry and Ryan Fox ensured they stayed in contention on the opening day of the 146th Open golf championship at Royal Birkdale.

Hendry finished with a three-over-par 73 and Fox was a shot further back.

Those cards are expected to place the New Zealanders within reach of today’s projected cut, which will include the top 70 players and ties.

That mark is currently hovering at oneover-par.

Hendry and Fox played in the second half of the day and enjoyed the better of the weather on England’s north-west coast.

They met fine conditions and light breezes for the most part, compared to the early starters who endured overcast skies, stronger winds and the threat of rain.

Hendry overcame a back injury in the build-up to produce a miscellany of two birdies – at the par-four eight and 16th holes – five bogeys and 11 pars.

Five local martial artists have come away with a swag of medals at the recent National Karate Championships in Wellington.

In the female 6-7 years category, Madison Edmond picked up a bronze medal in the Kata, as well as a bronze in the Kumite, with Carina Lupse picking up silver.

In the female 12-13 years 40kg+

premier Kumite, Taylah Burrowes won bronze.

Kyle Cabangun picked up bronze in the male 14-15 years 50kg premier Kumite.

Holly Burrowes was competing

in the 6-7 year divisions and narrowly missed out on a medal at the event.

Isla Russell picked up two bronze medals, one for Kumite and one for Kata.

Straight-talking Warriors frontrower Sam Lisone knows fans and critics have all but given up on them, but says his team-mates need to play for each other in tonight’s NRL clash against North Queensland.

The 11th-placed Warriors head to Townsville needing to win at least five of their remaining seven games to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, following consecutive defeats to Manly and Penrith.

The Warriors have enjoyed just one away victory this season and are looking to overturn a horror record at 1300Smiles Stadium where they have won just one of their last 11 matches against the Cowboys since 2002.

With star halfback Shaun Johnson likely to miss at least a month of football with a knee injury, it will take a dramatic improvement for the Warriors to find the consistency required to book

Don’t blame Pearce Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has backed Mitchell Pearce to bounce back from another State of Origin failure and lead his NRL club to the finals.

Robinson admitted being pained watching Pearce again go down at interstate level. “It really hurts last week for a coach to see the way (Origin III) went and obviously knowing how it can affect somebody. And you feel sorry for them, a lot of us do,” Robinson said. “But he’s also, he’s got a task with us. He’s played very well this year, he’s in good form, and now it’s his time to get back in and lead our team around.”

In-demand Brisbane centre James Roberts did his chances of a rich new NRL deal no harm with a double in the Broncos’ big win over Canterbury. The Broncos smashed the Bulldogs 42-12 on Thursday night, with Roberts’ two tries part of a second-half onslaught that all but ended their opponent’s finals hopes. The 24-year-old is off contract at the end of the year and has reportedly been approached by at least five other NRL clubs as he seeks a significant rise from his current $300,000 per season deal. - NZME

In his third season with 56 first grade games to his name, Lisone is desperate to avoid another poor season finish after the Warriors lost their last eight games in 2015 and six of their final eight matches last year.

“There’s a lot of pressure in first grade and everyone’s feeling it.

Lisone admits the Warriors forwards have failed to fire in their last two outings, and says they need to generate greater ruck speed to provide their playmakers with a better platform to launch their attack.

“Penrith were winning the play the balls and creating momentum and they had good players like Nathan Cleary playing off the back of it.

“We know we’ve got to be better there and we’ve been working really hard at training on that.

“This week we’re going to try and get Bully (Issac Luke), Mason (Lino) and Kieran (Foran) running all the time.

“If we see them running that will tell us that we’re doing our job because we’re getting them quick play the balls.”

Johnson’s absence is an obvious blow to the side but Lisone is confident Lino will handle the No.7 role in his first NRL game in two years.

Peter Wallace has forced his way into Penrith’s squad to play Gold Coast in today’s NRL clash at Pepper Stadium, with Mitch Rein the unlucky player to miss out.

Coach Anthony Griffin described Rein’s scratching from the squad as a “tough call” given his recent performances but backed the experienced Wallace to perform in his comeback from a groin tear.

The clash shapes as crucial for both sides, who sit outside the top eight but within striking distance of finals if they continue their winning ways.

Woods full of praise The Wests Tigers claim there’s no animosity towards mid-NRL season defector Mitchell Moses but there may be some envy around his new and improved situation. Tigers captain Aaron Woods has praised Moses for pushing for a release in May to join Parramatta, who are poised to make a run at finals in seventh place on the ladder.

The Tigers, meanwhile, languish in second-last with four wins ahead of the two teams’ round 20 meeting tomorrow. “Yeah, definitely. You always want to be there at the end of the year,” Woods said when asked if he was jealous of Moses’ move.

Harris the one to follow Cambridge jockey Troy Harris has a strong book of rides on the seven-race card at Ruakaka today and rates Group Two winner Wyndspelle as his best of the day.

The Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs-trained runner has had a solid classic season and is being set for the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival.

“It’s my first ride on the horse,” Harris said. “It’s his first run back in since his run in the NZ Derby so I’m pretty excited to ride him.

“Donna and Chris reckon he’s coming up well and they are pretty good judges. I think he is the horse to beat in the race off his previous form.”

He will also ride Chasing Great in the last, a last-start winner over a mile.

“He’s a pretty tough horse, eventually he’s going to get over a further trip but the mile shouldn’t worry him, I think he’ll be right in it.”

Earlier in the day Harris will be aboard the Stephen Marshtrained Mediterranean Star in the third race and the Roger Jamestrained Crux in the fourth.

He thinks debut runner Mediterranean Star will benefit from a better track after his placing on a heavy track at the Te Teko trials earlier this month.

“His trials to date have all been good,” he said. “He needed that trial at Te Teko, the track was pretty heavy so it didn’t really suit him, so going up to Ruakaka should benefit him.

“If he can get a nice trip I can

His only other ride on the day is Crux.

The Buffalo Man gelding has

won his only start to date and is another horse who would benefit from a firmer track according to Harris.

“I’ve ridden him at both of his trials this time in,” he said.

“He won on a dead track at Matamata so that’s why Roger has opted to take him up to Ruakaka to find a better track.

“Hopefully, we don’t get the rain that we’re supposed to get.”

Meanwhile, Harris said he is really enjoying his riding and is looking forward to continuing his form into next season.

“I am getting a lot of support from trainers, so hopefully that continues into next season.

“I want to ride 60 winners (next season) at this stage, I reckon it’s a doable task for me.”

Weather forces rescheduling, abandonment New Zealand’s wild winter weather has again imposed itself on the thoroughbred industry.

Off the back of the abandonment of last Saturday’s Wellington meeting, yesterday’s fixture at Te Aroha was ruled out after

overnight wind damage to the main grandstand.

Even though the track was safe to race on, the state of the grandstand was such that the venue could not operate in a safe manner, but with work to be carried

out this weekend the meeting is now rescheduled for Monday.

The Opunake Cup will now be held tomorrow, while heavy flooding has resulted in the Oamaru meeting already abandoned.

“We are mindful that it is a very

important race day and we were less than 50-50 to race on Saturday. We believe there is a 95-100 per cent chance we can race Sunday,” Taranaki Thoroughbred Racing general manager Carey Hobbs said.

Frost happy to wait Otaki trainer Rachael Frost has been looking far and wide for a suitable race for Redefine, but without any joy. “I was going to send him to Oamaru on Sunday, but the track looks like it will be no better than New Plymouth,” said Frost, who bred and races the Captain Rio gelding. “I might look at the National meeting at Riccarton, but if it’s really wet then I’ll just wait for Hawke’s Bay.” - NZME

Viking retired Versatile performer Eric The Viking has been retired. A smart flat performer before winning the Grand National, Koral and Wellington Steeplechases, time has been called on the rising 12-year-old after two outings this winter. “The special thing was that he was able to win an Opunake Cup over 1400m and then steeple-chases over 5500m – very few horses can do that. “He raced for eight seasons as well and that showed how durable he was,” part-owner and trainer Aaron Bidlake said. - NZME

Kiwi-bred returning New Zealand-bred filly I Am A Star, winner of the Gr.1 Myer Classic last spring, will be back in action next month. The rising four-year-old will return in either the Gr.3 Aurie’s Star on August 12 or the Listed Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield a week later.
