Weather soaks Mid Canterbury good dusting of snow.

Mt Hutt reported on their Facebook page yesterday that they had received 27cm of new snow overnight on Saturday and more of the sweet stuff was falling yesterday with the mountain closed for the day.

MetService are predicting a rain-free start to the third term of school for the year today with overcast weather on the menu for most of the week for the region.

But with surface water still lying around the district, the NZ Transport Agency was urging drivers to keep an eye on the changing weather conditions when on the highways.

They issued the following safe long-distance driving reminders: increase following distances and drive at a safe speed for the conditions, buckle seatbelts, plan your journey and prepare for delays, take regular breaks to fight fatigue and don’t attempt to overtake unless completely safe.

NZTA stresses above all to not get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or tired.

Wet weather might have impacted most of the Ashburton District over the course of the weekend but Mt Hutt staff were smiling with more of the golden white stuff falling on the mountain.

Heavy rain from Friday night and into Sunday saw the majority of sports cancelled across the district on Saturday with only the finals aspects of Mid Canterbury rugby going ahead.

The persistent rain left many roads under water with the Methven Highway very dangerous in parts as well as around Thompson’s Track and around Methven.

Graham’s Weather Station reported that more than 23mm of rain had fallen during the course of Saturday and as of 5pm last night close to 17mm had fallen yesterday.

While the damp nature of the outside world left many indoors for the weekend, there was good opportunity for those who like to hit the slopes to get excited with Mt Hutt and other skifields around Canterbury gaining a

Drink drivers steer clear of interlocks

Only half the Ashburton people being sentenced to alcohol interlock devices by the courts are making appointments to have them fitted.

Smart Start Interlocks installs and monitors devices for the district, via an agency at Rolleston.

Spokesman Mathias Foster said 22 offenders had been sentenced to interlock devices between July last year (when new penalties for drink drivers came in) and the end of April this year.

But there were only currently about 10 drivers in the district being monitored for their alcohol interlock compliance.

Drivers have their data downloaded monthly. It will record failed breath-tests on the device, which is fitted to their vehicles and needs a zero alcohol breath sample to start.

“The biggest issue we’ve noticed so far is that although people are sentenced, a large number don’t even get their interlock licence and get an interlock device fitted,” Foster said.

He estimated about half the number of people sentenced to the device did not apply.

“This is an issue because people can’t move on to the next phase of their sentence until they’ve completed 12 months on an interlock, so they’re effectively disqualified from driving forever.”

Drivers sentenced to the interlock programme are disqualified for 28 days before they are allowed to apply for the interlock licence. It is the only licence available to them until at least 12 months have passed, when they can then apply for a zero alcohol licence. That licence lasts three years and drivers then have to apply to the New Zealand Transport Agency to have their driver’s licence reinstated.

Foster said the number of drink drivers being sentenced to the interlock devices was about what they had expected, but the number of interlocks actually installed was lower than the company had expected.

The cost of an interlock sentence can be up to $3000, though subsidies are available for lower-income offenders. The monthly lease cost of the device is $183.

Waiting times are short. Once a drink driver gets his interlock licence, the device can be installed within a couple of days.

Foster said the company was still accumulating data on how long drink drivers spent on the interlock device, as the new rules making interlocks mandatory for repeat drink drivers and those with a breath alcohol level over 800mcg only came into force a year ago.

Alcohol is a major contributor in serious and fatal road crashes. Loss of control and head-on crashes are the most common types of fatal crash for drivers affected by alcohol and/or drugs.

District features in records NZME & Ashburton Guardian Dunedin may have lost the record for the world’s steepest street – but Kiwis are still tops in a lot of other weird and wacky ways – including one record set high above Ashburton.

Titles range from the Guinness World Record for the longest television interview – 26 hours – to the largest collection of Zebra-related items – 508.

In fact a search of the Guinness World Records website for New Zealand records shows a whopping 320 results.

Included in the list are the efforts of Trapeze artist Anna Cochrane who set her world record in February 2016 at Ashburton, dislocating a rib during the routine.

Cochrane was successful in her bid to perform the world’s highest static trapeze act while suspended from a hot air balloon to raise money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters (a mentor programme for vulnerable children).

The ambulance officer and pilates instructor performed a routine of more than 5 minutes at an altitude of between 10,400ft and 11,400ft surpassing the previous record of 2171ft.

“I am really proud of how all the team of experts came together, it’s still unbelievable that it actually happened,” she said at the time.

“A little part of me thought that this was all too big and it couldn’t be happening but the whole thing went so smoothly.”

However, a few minutes into the routine she dislocated her rib but did not stop in order to make the record a success.

She had hoped to top off the experience by sky diving from the hot air balloon afterwards but her injury prevented her from doing this.

The record was done with the help of a number of organisations including Ashburton-based Skydiving Kiwis.

In brief Car crashes into bank A man fleeing police suffered serious injuries after ploughing his vehicle into an Auckland bank yesterday. The crash happened at the corner of Church Street and Onehunga Mall just after 8.20am.

Witness Helen Pakofe said the grey Honda Odyssey was being pursued by police when the driver lost control and crashed into the bank. Just before 9am the male driver was reportedly handcuffed and taken to a waiting ambulance.

He was the only person in the car.

Rugby World Cup wins – three New Zealand has outdone itself on the world record stage.

Guinness World Records documents and celebrates superlative achievements that are the best in the world.

Last week Kiwis lost the steepest street world record after Dunedin’s Baldwin St was dethroned

by Ffordd Pen Llech, a street in the North Wales town of Harlech.

But New Zealand still holds the record for that 26 hours and 4-second television interview achieved by Tom Conroy and Sir Tim Shadbolt for CUE Television in April 2012.

In 2014 Wendy Jarnet of Thames held the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of Zebra-related items, mostly stuffed animals, with 508 items, after she started collecting them as a 4-year-old after a trip to Auckland Zoo. Blair Williamson took out the top spot for the most Rubik’s Cubes solved while running a marathon (254) at the Christchurch International Marathon in June 2017.

After 23 years Alan McKay still

holds the record for the longest bubble, made using a bubble wand and washing-up liquid, glycerine and water.

The bubble measured 32m, or 105ft, long.

Sir Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy wins the largest battle sequences on film with more than 200,000 fighting characters.

To achieve it Weta Digital wrote bespoke crowd-simulation software called “Massive”, which combined digital animation with an artificial intelligence that governed how the characters interacted, Guinness World Records states.

Angela Fredericks holds the record for the fastest time to open 100 mussels (1 min 55.28 seconds). Fredericks set the world record at the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival in March 2016, beating her previous year’s record.

New Zealanders also hold world records in the fastest time to complete 10km pushing a pram (32 min 26 sec), the highest static trapeze act (3159.25m), and the most backflips on a bike.

flips on a bike in a single leap in July 2015 at Pastranaland in Maryland, United States. In 2011 he became the first person to complete a triple backflip.

Then there’s the world’s loudest clap (113 decibels), the largest liquorice allsort (1.001m wide by 0.768m high), and the largest gathering of steampunks (228) at the Steampunk New Zealand Festival in Oamaru in June 2016.

Not surprisingly, New Zealand also holds world records in sporting events including the most Rugby World Cup wins, and the fastest row – the women’s coxless pairs of Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler. The women rowed 2000m in 6 min 49.8 sec at the Rowing World Cup II in Poland in June 2017.

New Zealand also holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest jury trial outcome. On July 22, 2004 Nicholas McAllister was acquitted of cultivating cannabis plants at a deliberation that lasted just one minute at Greymouth District Court. The jury left to consider the verdict at 3.28pm and returned at 3.29pm with “not guilty”.

Drugs are believed to have been involved in an incident at a Raglan beach carpark that left one person dead and another hospitalised.

Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Scott Osmond said the death had been classified as a medical event, while a police spokeswoman said it would be investigated by the coroner.

However, a second person in the car was taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition, she said.

The NZ Herald has learned that drugs were believed to have played a part in the death, which was understood to be accidental.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Manu Bay about 3.30pm on Saturday.

The vehicle involved was a grey SUV and was guarded by police cars.

Police today did not have any other further details about what happened.

Nearly 5000 people have reported feeling a shallow earthquake centred in Christchurch, at about 11.50pm on Saturday. The Geonet site shows the quake registered at a magnitude of 3.5, but with a depth of just 6km. Of the 4800 or so ‘felt it’ reports collected by the website, 11 have described the shaking as ‘extreme’ – the strongest rating possible. Three of those were in Nelson, the rest in Christchurch. And the quake was felt as far away as Auckland and Invercargill, although the shaking in those centres was described as ‘light’. Fire and Emergency says no damage has been reported.

Bullying in parliament Deputy Speaker Anne Tolley is the chair of a working group designed to stop bullying in parliament.

Tolley has confirmed she is the chair of a working group which has been established to develop a Parliamentary Workplace Code of Conduct. The Deputy Speaker says the recent incident which led to her apologising to Youth MP Lily Dorrance will make her “all the more aware of the issues”. Marketing costs $262k Taxpayers have forked out more than $260,000 to promote the police’s new non-emergency phone number – including the creation of music cards featuring audio of the new number. The 105 [ten five] number was launched on May 10 by Police Commissioner Mike Bush in an effort to relieve pressure on 111 emergency calls.

By last month more than 53,000 calls had been made to the nonemergency number for anything from a car parked over a driveway to shoplifting and lost property.

Man in hospital following blaze

Police seek info following crash Ashburton police have issued a public plea for information following an unexplained accident on Seafield Road last Thursday night.

In a statement to the Guardian, police asked for anyone with information regarding the accident on Seafield Road where a vehicle has left the road and crashed through a fence and into a hedge at the Ashburton Aerodrome.

The accident has occurred between 9.50pm and 10pm at night.

Police said the motor vehicle will have sustained severe damage in the accident, particularly to the front and possibly underneath.

If anyone witnessed the accident or has any information around whose motor vehicle was involved they are asked to contact the Ashburton Police Station on 307 8400.

A victim of the Christchurch gas explosion is fighting for his life as expert investigators probe just what sparked the giant blast.

The Greymouth man and his wife were staying at his friends’ Marble Court home in the northern Christchurch suburb of Northwood when the massive explosion happened at 10.14am on Friday.

Neighbours and passers-by who pulled stunned survivors from the burning debris were amazed that nobody was killed instantly.

The man and five others were rushed by ambulance to hospital.

His daughter Belinda Blanchfield has been left feeling distraught and worried.

“At this stage, we are very concerned for our families,” she told the Herald on Sunday.

Blanchfield said the women are “doing okay” but the families have serious concerns for the men, especially her father who is on life support at Christchurch Hospital.

She thanked everyone for their messages of support and also the “amazing people who helped everyone at the scene”.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman confirmed that one per-

son remains in a critical condition.

One person was discharged on Friday, while three others are in a stable condition at Christchurch Hospital. One patient, described as stable, has been transferred to Middlemore Hospital where there is a serious burns unit.

Twelve houses around Marble Court will remain behind a police cordon tomorrow as officers, alongside investigators from WorkSafe and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), comb through the rubble for clues. A total of 21 homes have been damaged, with five facing possible demolition.

Chunks of roof tiles, broken glass, pink insulation, and other debris remain scattered over the small cul-de-sac.

Several neighbouring houses have major damage, including blasted walls, caved-in garage doors, smashed windows and eaves.

A gas contractor who worked on the Marble Court house, which was having gas issues, just one day before it exploded arrived at the chaotic scene on Friday and fronted to police officers.

The gas worker voluntarily made himself known to first responders and suggested that police or fire investigators might want to talk to him.

He was devastated by what happened, sources say.

A 42-year-old man remains in Whanganui Hospital in a stable condition following the “massive blaze” which engulfed a heritage building in central Whanganui on Saturday night.

The other who was hospitalised, a 46-year old male, has since been discharged.

The cordon which was in place around the building on the corner of Taupo Quay and Victoria Ave was lifted late yesterday morning.

Whanganui fire chief Gary Ward said the crews “did an amazing job containing a very large fire”.

Ward said the roof and internal floors of the building collapsed.

He said the fire was contained to the one building but others close by may have sustained heat or water damage.

Eleven fire crews from as far away as Palmerston North and New Plymouth rushed to the fire after multiple calls came in from 8.45pm.

Crews took until 12.55am to put the fire out.

Both those caught in the fire had been treated for burns and smoke inhalation and taken to Whanganui Hospital.

Artists from a gift shop on the ground floor of the Thain’s building don’t know when they will be allowed inside to assess the damage.

Bruce Kelly, a member of the collective said the group was not insured and individual artists will bear the personal risk of losing their stock.

“The main thing is that no one was killed in the fire,” he said.

Whanganui Mayor Hamish McDouall said an engineers’ inspection of the building will be completed “relatively quickly” so the intersection of Taupo Quay and Victoria Ave can be reopened.

50 years since moon landing AP A moonstruck United States celebrated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s “giant leap” by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin at parties, races, ball games and concerts yesterday.

At NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, Aldrin showed vice-president Mike Pence the launch pad where he flew to the moon in 1969. At the same time halfway around the world, an American and two other astronauts blasted into space on a Russian rocket. And in Armstrong’s hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio, nearly 2000 runners competed in “Run to the Moon” races.

“Apollo 11 is the only event in the 20th century that stands a chance of being widely remembered in the 30th century,” the vice president said.

Wapakoneta 10K runner Robert Rocco, 54, a retired Air Force officer from Centerville, Ohio, called the moon landing by Armstrong and Aldrin “perhaps the most historic event in my lifetime, maybe in anybody’s lifetime”.

At the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Gilda Warden sat on a bench and gazed in awe at the Apollo 11 command module, Columbia, on display.

“It’s like entering the Sistine Chapel and seeing the ceiling. You want to just sit there and take it in,” said Warden, 63, a psychiat-

Eagle to the Sea of Tranquility. The Eagle landed with just 17 seconds of fuel to spare. Six hours later, Armstrong was the first to step onto the lunar surface, proclaiming for the ages: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

It was humanity’s first footsteps on another world.

In a speech at Kennedy, Pence paid tribute to Armstrong, Aldrin and command module pilot Michael Collins — if they’re not heroes, “then there are no heroes” — as well as the 400,000 Americans who worked tirelessly to get them to the moon.

Aldrin, 89, grabbed the right hand of Neil Armstrong’s older son, Rick, at Pence’s mention of heroes. He then stood and saluted, and received a standing ovation.

Armstrong died in 2012. Collins, 88, did not attend the Florida ceremony. But Apollo 17’s Harrison Schmitt, the next-to-last man to walk on the moon in 1972, was there.

Pence reiterated the Trump administration’s goal of sending American astronauts back to the moon within five years and eventually on to Mars. He said this next generation of astronauts will spend weeks and months on the lunar surface, not just days and hours like the 12 Apollo moonwalkers did. Alongside the stage was the newly completed Orion capsule that will fly to the moon and back, on a test flight without a crew, in another year or two.

Flights to Cairo suspended over security scare Multiple airlines have temporarily suspended flights in and out of Cairo, following an ongoing security review.

British Airways has announced it has suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precautionary measure following a security review.

And German carrier Lufthansa is also temporarily stopping services to the city for at least 24 hours.

British Airways said it would not operate its aircraft unless it felt it was safe to do so.

Cruise returns to Top Gun The new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick has been released, with Tom Cruise reprising his iconic role as US Navy pilot Maverick.

The trailer gives little of the sequel’s plot away, but reveals that Maverick has not climbed the ranks, remaining a captain since the events of the original film. Top Gun: Maverick also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Lewis Pullman. It is expected in cinemas in 2020.

“We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world, and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment,” British Airways said.

“The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our priority, and we would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so.”

German carrier Lufthansa said it was suspending flights to Cairo from Munich and Frankfurt without giving any reason.

A Lufthansa spokesman said normal service should return in a day. The British flag

carrier said it would not operate its aircraft unless it felt it was safe to do so.

Egypt’s civil aviation ministry said it was “co-ordinating” with the British embassy in Cairo and the local BA representative and starting an extra EgyptAir flight to London every day to carry stranded passengers.

Some affected passengers posted pictures on social media appearing to show a letter handed out by BA with a similar message. A spokeswoman for the airline said it could not immediately offer more information about the suspensions.

Michelle Obama and Bill Gates have been named the most admired man and woman in the world, according to a new poll.

The former US First Lady usurped Angelina Jolie to take the top spot on the list compiled by YouGov. Billionaire tech mogul Bill Gates remained the world’s most popular male figure, having topped the list every time since the survey launched in 2015.

Both beat out several influential leaders and personalities including the Queen, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey and even the Dalai Lama. The list features 20 men and 20 women whom were selected after 42,000 people were polled in 41 countries.

Falling closely behind Gates for “most admired man” are former US President Barack Obama, actor and martial artist Jackie Chan, President of China Xi Jingping and Chinese business magnate Jack Ma. Rounding out the top five for the women’s category are talk show host Oprah

Winfrey, actress-turned-humanitarian Angelina Jolie, the Queen and Harry Potter star Emma Watson.

No Kiwis made the worldwide lists, including our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern who was ranked the second most admired woman by Australians.

Movie on hold The brakes have gone on the latest Hollywood blockbuster for young Kiwi superstar Julian Dennison. His latest movie, Godzilla vs. Kong, which finished filming in April, was due for release next May, but Hollywood pundits are saying it has been pushed back to late next year to maximise its box office appeal.

It is Dennison’s second blockbuster.

Ryan Reynolds, the star of his first hit, Deadpool 2, was a huge fan of Dennison’s work as Ricky Baker in Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and the pair became instant friends on the superhero movie set. Godzilla vs Kong also stars Big Little Lies’ heart-throb Alexander Skarsgard.

Still so much uncertainty around elections W

e’ve heard from almost all of the now sitting members of our councillors’ bench, but the real interest will now be in who is going to step out of the shadows and declare themselves in the running.

Everywhere I went over the weekend, everyone wanted to talk about what might happen in October and in particular how they felt the race for the mayoralty might pan out.

Like I’ve said to anyone else who’s asked me, at this stage I see it as being too close to call and it would only take one more name to be thrown into the ring to really throw the cat among the pigeons – so to speak.

And while the race for the top job is intriguing, there is just as much mystique and questions around who might sit beneath them and serve as a councillor when the new term begins.

Of the seven confirmed to be standing again, you’d suggest all seven are well in the race.

They have at least had one term to get the feel for the place and the role and should be ready

to hit the ground running when it comes time to get moving again.

But there is a slight issue this year in that there aren’t as many seats available.

The move to reduce councillor numbers down to nine kicks into gear at this election, meaning that it could become a rather cutthroat affair as potentials start to vie for those spots.

You’d imagine there will be those who will cruise back through and hold their position without too much trouble, but some might be carefully pondering in the back of their heads how they’re going to drag out the required votes to get them over the line.

And that’s without thinking

about the prospect of anyone new who might be keen to stand.

Sources inform us that a few of those known to be in the mix for the election are working their way around town and drumming up some support and trying to encourage certain people to stand themselves.

Interesting to note too that of the three confirmed contenders for the job of mayor, only Leen Braam has stated he will also stand as a councillor, with both Tony Todd and the incumbent Donna Favel both stating it’s all or nothing.

What that means is that we are going to lose out on at least one of those two being part of the council at all.

Which is a shame – because both would have made excellent councillors had they not gained the role they were after – but that’s politics.

The next couple of weeks will see some interesting names come out of the woodwork to really ramp things up as the nomination period gets into full swing.

Who they might be, or what they might stand for is, at this stage, anyone’s guess.

All we know is that this race to some of the most important roles in our district hasn’t even got out of park yet, it’s just happily idling away – waiting for the moment someone kicks it into gear and really gets things going.

Proof is in the pudding I

t won’t surprise you to hear that in Government there’s a minister for pretty much everything. All up, there are 77 different ministerial portfolios covering important areas like Digital Media, Arms Control, and Culture (though sadly not the cheese variety).

One of the more recent developments is for a Rural Communities portfolio. It’s held by West Coaster Damien O’Connor, who actually isn’t a bad chap, alongside his Agriculture responsibilities. He’s understandably pretty busy in that field, to the extent that in nearly two years there’s really only been one announcement he’s made as Minister for Rural Communities.

As far as ideas go, it’s not a bad one. It would apply a “rural proofing” lens to every Government initiative, ensuring that any impacts on rural communities are considered when setting Government policy.

A nice idea, in theory, but you’ll forgive me for being a tad

sceptical when I read the next part of the announcement.

Wellington-based officials at the Ministry for Primary Industries, not exactly known for their farming expertise and knowledge, would be given responsibility for educating other Government departments about life in rural communities.

Perhaps I’m not the only cynic; the announcement was made more than a year ago at Fieldays in Mystery Creek and there’s been near radio-silence about it ever since.

It’s hard to see how that rural proofing lens could possibly have been applied to the recent Government announcement for a tax on conventionally powered

vehicles. The idea of getting more motorists into electric vehicles is sound. It’s the reason that the previous Government, and this one up until now, has exempted EVs from road user charges.

For people who predominantly stick to urban centres and main roads, areas near charging stations, they work well. Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, even here in Ashburton, it’s common to see Nissan Leafs cruising the streets.

But what of those for whom a Leaf won’t work? Farmers and tradies who need bigger vehicles for work. Or those of us who don’t live in town, or regularly travel up into the high country, well away from civilisation, and certainly somewhere to plug in and charge for several hours.

For them the tax is punitive.

There’s no choice they can make to avoid the tax, they’ll simply have to pay it. $5850 for a single cab Hilux. $6100 for an Isuzu D-Max. $6350 for a Holden

Colorado. It’s not, as Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter tried to explain last week, a “small fee”.

She’s the same minister who referred to motorists as “car fascists” and is pushing plans to cut speed limits across the country instead of investing in roading improvements.

And what of Damien and his rural proofing lens? Well so far nothing. No word on the impact on isolated communities of a car tax. Nothing on what it will cost farmers. Silence over the Government’s $5 billion cuts to the state highway roading budget.

Perhaps we’ll have more luck with the Minister for Government Digital Services.

thing pleasant to look at in a town centre that has too many empty shops.

I believe the building of the art

Now I think the water fountain issue and the shutting down of the information centre could cost the present mayor.

t first, I assumed Tombstone might be an American equivalent of visiting Hokitika’s Shantytown, purpose-built to titillate the tourist with the mocked-up flavour of the Gold Rush era.

Not so in Tombstone, where the old town is your real-deal warts and all experience. Evoking the spirit of the Old West comes

Venturing out in the Arizonan wilderness, where native Apaches roamed, soldiers warned Ed Schieffelin that “the only stone you will find out there will be your tombstone”.

Ed discovered silver – vast ledges of it. In honour of the soldiers’ cautionary advice, he named his mine Tombstone which duly became the name of the town. Word spread like wildfire of his silver strike and thousands descended on Tombstone in search of their fortune.

Prospectors, cowboys, homesteaders, lawyers, gunmen, soiled doves (prostitutes) and business people flocked there in their droves.

I spent a night in Tombstone and there’s a plethora of ways you can sample the town, from horse-drawn wagon and stagecoach tours to paranormal walks and backcountry jeep tours.

Top of the list should be the O.K. Corral, the old saddlery, feed store and stables, which now stages a dramatic re-enactment of the infamous gunfight, on the very spot where it occurred in 1881.

The shoot-out was the inevitable climax to months of growing tensions between the police and

a band of cowboys who had been involved in cattle-rustling and stagecoach robberies. Romantic rivalries were also in the mix.

Police Chief Virgil Earp had deputised his brothers Wyatt and Morgan along with Doc Holliday to disarm the Clanton and McLaury cowboys. Twenty-four seconds and 30 shots later, Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury were all mortally wounded.

It was that one event that has arguably kept Tombstone alive and kicking today.

The gunfight is superbly re-enacted several times a day, fusing the right mix of entertainment and historic insight.

The corral neighboured Fly’s Boarding House and Portrait Studio. Both buildings have been preserved and are packed with history. C S Fly’s collection of photographs on display are magnificently instructive, particularly of the town and his portraits of the Apache, including Geronimo.

Doc Holliday was renting a room in the boarding house at the time of the showdown and one of the town’s prostitutes, Big Nose Kate, witnessed the shootout from his room.

The corral showcases some of the prostitutes’ cribs, from where they plied their trade.

Admission to the corral also provides you access to the Historama, a 25-minute multi-media spectacle, complete with animated figures and rotating scenes, narrated by Vincent Price.

Two major fires swept through Tombstone during the 1880s, razing the downtown business district, only for it to be hastily rebuilt twice.

It gave rise to the enduring mantra that Tombstone was a town that was “too good to die”.

As the silver mining continued the mineshafts were dug deeper and deeper to get the precious ore, until disaster struck and the mines were flooded, 520 feet underground.

Attempts to pump out the water worked tenuously for a few years, before it became cost prohibitive.

But not before $US37 million worth of silver had been extracted from the ground.

As you’d expect time-honoured saloons, steeped in legend, continue doing a roaring trade in historic Tombstone.

The Longhorn was previously named the Bucket of Blood Saloon because Virgil Earp was shot here from the second floor.

There’s the Crystal Palace, Doc Holliday’s Saloon (which was Wells Fargo’s office in 1881),

and best of all Big Nose Kate’s Saloon, formerly known as the Grand Hotel.

Named in honour of the Hungarian-born prostitute who became Doc Holliday’s wife, this saloon of yesterday, with many of its original trappings, is widely lauded as the best cowboy bar in the west.

Abuzz with live music, mining boom artefacts and a convivial atmosphere, the food is fittingly indecent, like the foot-long all-beef hot dog. Wash it down with a Big Nose Kate’s Private Reserve Pilsner, an 1880s-style pilsner that has been recreated

by Bisbee Brewing Company.

Tombstone was never short of entertainment, best exemplified by the Bird Cage Theatre.

It was an all-in-one saloon, theatre, gambling hall and brothel.

Legend has it that no self-respecting woman in town would even walk on the same side of the street as the Bird Cage.

Opening its doors on Christmas Day 1881, it ran 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the height of the mining boom.

It was a wild, wicked and lusty den of iniquity, evidenced by the fact that there are 140 bullet holes in the walls and ceiling.

ments suspended from the ceiling, dangling over the gaming tables.

It was in these bird cages that the “ladies of the night”, plied their trade, entertained and enticed their customers.

The longest recorded poker game in history took place here, a house game that ran continually for eight years and five months.

That poker table still stands as it was left, with its chairs on the dirt floor.

Much of the venue has been frozen in time from the late 19th century, like the coin-operated juke box that still plays today, 140 years on.

Or the sumptuous nine foot high painting of Fatima in the back bar, riddled with the scars of six bullet points.

The chandeliers, lavish drapes, gaming tables and cherrywood bar all offer an indelible taste of the Old West, left untouched since the heydays of the 1880s.

Now a preserved national landmark of the American West, when disaster struck Tombstone and the mines flooded, the Bird Cage was boarded up and left undisturbed for decades, enabling you to savour this authentic encounter with the past.

Slow-cooked country chicken

■■ Turn slow cooker onto low.

■■ Place seasoned flour into a clean plastic bag with the chicken pieces and shake the bag so that

the chicken is evenly coated.

■■ Heat butter and oil in a large frying pan. Place floured chicken into pan and brown pieces on all sides.

■■ Remove chicken from pan and add bacon, onion, garlic, carrots and mushrooms.

■■ Sauté for 2-3 minutes, remove vegetable mix and place into slow cooker. Top vegetables with chicken pieces. Add tomatoes, stock and parsley. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.

■■ Remove chicken from slow cooker and keep warm.

■■ Make a smooth paste from cornflour and 3 Tbsp cold water and stir into the chicken juices. Cover the slow cooker and cook for 15 minutes on high so that the juices thicken.

■■ For the mashed potato, boil potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes or until soft. Drain well, then mash. Stir through butter and milk then season with salt and pepper.

■■ Serve the chicken drizzled with the thickened sauce and mashed potato, garnished with parsley.

Opera coming to town Two opera singers with a passion for the art form are looking forward to enthralling Ashburton music lovers.

Opera Here is Christchurch performer and teacher Lois Johnston’s latest venture.

“It is all about taking opera to unusual places and spaces,” she said.

“Our mission is to show people who may not normally consider opera as a form of entertainment how amazing it is, and that it is bursting with genuine human warmth, emotion and experience.”

She wanted audiences to share the highs and lows of human existence, and to experience how relevant opera was today.

“We provide short explanations of the arias and duets we perform, and verbal translations in everyday language. Most importantly, we want to take people out of their own lives for an afternoon, and take them on a journey with us, like a sightseeing trip of some of opera’s greatest hits.”

Upon graduation from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Johnston specialised in early and contemporary music working with groups such as Ludus Baroque, the Age of Enlightenment and the Dunedin Consort.

Almost a decade later, an invitation to sing one of the flower-maidens in a BBC Proms performance of Parsifal gave her an appetite for opera and she continued her studies at Birmingham Conservatoire, obtaining a postgraduate diploma in operatic performance.

She then trod the boards on the operatic stage around Europe, working with some of the world’s most distinguished opera companies, directors and conductors before moving permanently to New Zealand.

She will sing alongside mezzo-soprano Claire Barton in Ashburton.

Stokes’ story of redemption Ged Stokes tells Tom Morgan of his pride at his resilient son Ben’s Cricket World Cup heroics after a stressful court case and losing the World T20 final.

Deb Stokes was so awestruck in the immediate aftermath of the World Cup final, she failed to notice her home phone in New Zealand had been ringing off the hook.

“I had left for work but Ben called Deb four times,” said Ged, father of England all-rounder Ben. “She was busy watching the replay and didn’t hear it.

“When she eventually picked it up, he was in the changing room, full of emotion, happiness and joy.

He wasn’t able to put into words how he felt.

“He was still on cloud nine.”

The party was just beginning for the England team.

Eight hours later, before getting his head down for three hours’ sleep, Stokes called Christchurch again, this time to speak to his father.

“It was 6am British time – he was in really good shape, he sounded like he was absolutely fine, but he just wouldn’t stop talking,” says Ged. “He was so excited and so up there that he just wanted to keep chatting and chatting.”

Ged, a former rugby league international, is the first member of Stokes’ immediate family to explain how his son has coped over a two-year period which has transformed him from the most notorious figure in English cricket to its most celebrated – the match-winning hero of Lord’s.

He is happy to talk because he is “so, so pleased for the people of England.

“They have been so supportive and people have seemed over the moon that Ben has done well, but more so that the England team has done well”.

Ged recognises his son’s story is one of “redemption, making up for it” as he reflects on the street brawl outside a Bristol nightclub that would lead to him going on trial for affray less than 12 months ago.

“It would have been very easy to fall out of love with cricket when he was going through that, wondering whether he would even be able to play the Ashes,” Ged says.

“It was a very hard time in his life, the uncertainty of everything.

“He came through it with flying colours, though. Every time you have an experience like that, you bank it and you get to situations like [Monday].”

Ben Stokes celebrates winning the Cricket World Cup with England skipper Eoin Morgan. officer, taking prisoners through rehabilitation programmes, meant Stokes was always sure of a frank appraisal from his parents as he attempted to clear his name.

“We knew that process would be lengthy but we also knew all the way through that there were a lot of things other people didn’t know.

“We backed our son 100 per cent, knowing that, in lots of ways, he had done the right thing in that situation.”

Stokes, banned from a subsequent losing Ashes tour, was acquitted after telling Bristol Crown Court that he feared being violently attacked by two men carrying weapons as he intervened to protect a gay couple on the receiving end of homophobic abuse.

His father recognises he and then England team-mate Alex Hales had put themselves in a vulnerable position.

“Nothing good happens at two in the morning,” he says.

“Some of the decisions that were made, to actually be there, were flawed and he knows that, and everybody knows that.

“But everything that happened was unavoidable because Ben was never going to not do something when two people, who just couldn’t protect themselves, were being victimised. It was a very simple equation.”

The hardest experience for the

Stokes family was the “long time for the truth to come out” before the jury rapidly came to its verdict after a seven-day trial.

“The whole situation was stressful,” says Ged. “It was very hard on Ben. Very, very hard on the people around him. But we all knew that at the end, the truth would out.”

The Stokes family have been moved by the goodwill shown after Stokes’ magnificent innings against New Zealand.

Ged also remembers the criticism he faced after the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup final against the West Indies, when Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes from Stokes’ final over to snatch the unlikeliest of wins.

Ged agrees his son’s story has the whiff of Hollywood.

“The words redemption, making up for it, not just that incident but the T20 World Cup, that last over ... He was simply disappointed then because the team had worked hard to win the World Cup, the country had wanted them to win it, and he felt like he had let them down.”

The ordeal of recent years has “100 per cent” strengthened him.

“Ben has always been a really good person, so drawing from the experiences and learnings that he got from this past couple of years is huge for him.

“It’s just like the growing pains

for anyone. Different things happen to different people at different stages of their lives.

“It’s how you react to those things that will really dictate how much they can do. Ben hasn’t changed one little bit. He is just normal to us and this won’t change Ben at all.”

There is no shortage of mental toughness between the pair. At team photos, Stokes often bends one of his fingers in homage to his rugby-playing father, who had one amputated after playing through the pain for almost a season.

“He evidenced the fact that he is tremendously mentally strong,” said Ged of Stokes’ undefeated innings of 84 (plus another eight in the super over), compiled under the most intense pressure.

“To cope with the whole situation during that match and at the end ... I just think that comes from experience and the time that he spent in high-pressure games, in front of big crowds.

“But that was a whole new planet in terms of pressure for anybody. I guess he had the fortitude and mental toughness to be able to block those things out.”

As Stokes walked back out for the super over, Ged, watching on from Christchurch, stared intensely at the TV footage to study his son’s facial expression.

“You could see after the game, with all the emotion and all that

pressure, it started to show on his face,” he says. “He was brought to tears and that really takes something. It’s great, there’s nothing wrong with it, but generally he would be the first to say that he wouldn’t normally show that emotion. That day, it all came out.”

The next day – as the team showed off the trophy at The Oval and then headed to a Downing Street reception – was a “blast” for Stokes.

“It’s probably not Ben’s thing to do those sorts of formal situations, but I think he surprised himself.

He called his brother from The Oval and said ‘this is unreal’.”

Ged, meanwhile, had returned to work.

“I got plenty of grief, don’t worry, but it was all tongue-in-cheek.

The overwhelming talk was about ‘what a game’. People were saying they couldn’t believe it.”

Ged would also like to clarify exactly who he was supporting, given reports before the final said he would be unreservedly backing New Zealand.

“As a Kiwi, I will always support New Zealand teams, but I have an affinity for the England team as well, for obvious reasons. My son plays for them, but we know a lot of the England lads.”

The close bond with the likes of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler stems back to the family’s time in Cumbria, where they moved when Ged was appointed head coach of Workington Town rugby league club.

Thankfully for England, Stokes stayed, signing forms initially with Cockermouth and then Durham.

“They used to play against Ben and they were all in the England training camps for their age groups all together. They all came out here to New Zealand for the 19-year-old World Cup, so we know all their families. We couldn’t lose that day.

If New Zealand won, fine, and if England won, fantastic. And if Ben did well – even better.”

Ged and Deb are now waiting to be reunited with Stokes, his “fantastic” wife Clare and two “wonderful” grandchildren in New Zealand in October and then at Christmas in South Africa.

Following a remarkable summer – which could yet include a victory in the Ashes – Stokes is runaway favourite to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year, but there is no chance of his head being turned.

“If he can’t play, he is disappointed. He’s the kid that has his whites on and is gutted when it rains on a Saturday morning.

“It’s fantastic to see him enjoy and love the game so much.”

Ashburton unable to go back-to-back The Ashburton indoor bowls Paterson Trophy team has failed in their mission to make it back-to-back successes in Collingwood over the weekend.

The Ashburton eight put in a brave effort but were no match for a rampant Canterbury squad which set the tone from the outset of the three day competition and never looked back.

After winning the zone playoff stage last year on their home floor and then performing with distinction at the illustrious Welch Trophy against the other five zone winners from around New Zealand, Ashburton will have headed into the weekend full of high hopes – but fully aware of the power of Canterbury.

A solid enough start on Friday night had them in the hunt at the end of the first session but a well below average morning session on Saturday put the pressure on.

They did fight back well however, scoring 30 points out of a possible 36 in the third session on Saturday afternoon, but Canterbury were off and gone by that point and ended up winning the title with two rounds to play in yesterday’s final session with a score of 137.5 points, with Ashburton next in second place on 102.

Grant Wilson was the best of the Ashburton players with 11 wins and two draws from his 15 matches over the course of the weekend, while Murray Bassett was next best with ten wins and a draw.

Teams play in a game of fours, a game of pairs and a game of singles in each round.

Wilson managed four wins and a draw from his five games of singles while he and Bassett won four of their five games of fours.

Murray Bassett produced some solid results, but Ashburton were unable to win the Paterson Trophy on the weekend.

Tiger’s not done, but he’s not 23 any more

S

o now we know.

Tiger Woods isn’t done, no matter what it looked like on his slog through the only two rounds he played in this British Open.

He’s also not in danger of being put in traction anytime soon, no matter how many times he is asked about his surgically repaired back.

He’s just not 23 anymore.

And that may be the worst part of being a superstar in any sport.

Woods admitted as much on Saturday, just before catching his jet home to Florida.

If there’s an upside to missing the cut at Royal Portrush, he said, it’s that he’ll get a chance to sleep in his own bed once again.

Meet the new Tiger.

Not the same as the old Tiger.

“Things are different,” Woods said.

“I’m going to have my hot weeks. I’m going to be there in contention with a chance to win, and I will win tournaments.

“But there are times when I’m just not going to be there.

“And that wasn’t the case 20-some-odd years ago.”

Coming to grips with age, of course, is something every athlete struggles with.

Woods is no exception, though his rabid fans somehow think he’s exempt from the realities that mere mortals face.

And, really, who can blame them?

A magical win at this year’s Masters after going 11 years without winning a major not only added to the Woods legend but left his fans wanting even more.

One look at Woods joylessly plodding his way around Royal Portrush on Saturday, though, and it’s apparent that he’s not only human after all – but an ageing human at that.

He’ll be 44 by the time he returns to Augusta National to defend his green jacket, with the aches and pains of anyone that age exacerbated by the amount of times he has swung golf clubs in his life and the four back surgeries that resulted from it.

The shots that used to come easy don’t always come when he commands them now, and the

concentration he needs standing over 5-footers isn’t always there either.

He’s not done, and to suggest so would be silly.

His play on the back nine on Sunday at the Masters was textbook precision, and winning the green jacket for a fifth time was almost as remarkable as Jack Nicklaus winning at the age of 46 back in 1986.

He will, as he says, likely win again, and it may not be long before that happens.

Woods said he’s primed to play in the FedEx Cup playoffs after taking a few weeks off to recharge.

There’s even an outside chance he could catch Nicklaus with 18 majors — he needs just three more — though with each passing poor performance that seems unlikely.

But Woods is not going to dominate again like he did in his prime.

He’s not going to win tournaments in bunches like he did in his 20s, will never hold all major championships at one time again like he did during one brilliant

stretch nearly two decades ago.

Accepting that takes some time. But Woods seems to finally understand it.

“It’s just a matter of being consistent,” Woods said.

“That’s one of the hardest things to accept as an older athlete is that you’re not going to be as consistent as you were at 23.”

A quick look at the results backs that up.

Woods seemed to come to this Open with low expectations, and with good reason. He hasn’t played competitively since the US Open and was coming off a vacation in Thailand.

But in the three majors since his Masters win, he’s only played on the weekend once.

That was at the US Open at Pebble Beach, where he wasn’t a factor.

He’s now missed the cut in just 10 majors in 23 years as a pro.

Seven of those missed cuts came in his last 13 major championships.

“It’s more frustrating than anything else because this is a major championship and I love playing in these events,” Woods said.

“I love the atmosphere. I love just the stress of playing in a major. And unfortunately, I’ve only had a chance to win one of them and was able to do it. But the other three I didn’t do very well.”

At this Open he didn’t do well at all. Woods blew up in the rain on the front nine Thursday on his way to a 78, and the 70 that he shot in his second round was, at best, ordinary.

That showed in one last slash out of the rough in the rain on 18, then a putt from off the green that got only halfway there. His mood seemed about as bright as the day, though when he stepped out of the rain to answer a few questions from the media he put on a happy face.

There were more questions about the back, though Woods has not said anything specifically all week about any back pain.

No, he’s not moving as well as he used to, Woods said after Round 1.

He’s sore after playing golf in the cold and rain.

And the last major of the decade was yet another reminder that he’s not 23 anymore.

One hell of a game

Muddy good. Just muddy damn good rugby.

Walking into the gates of the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday, despite the weather, there was a real sense of something special getting ready to unfold.

Perhaps it was the Senior B match on the oval, before the big dance of the Watters Cup, also between Rakaia and Methven that set the tone, but there was something in the air and it felt electric.

Rugby finals, particularly at a club level can be brutal beasts.

They’re either one-sided affairs of flair and brilliance, or they are intense matches that have you sitting on the edge of your seat for the entire duration, not quite sure which way things are going to fall come the final whistle.

They’re moments for the big guns to step up.

Be it a Jackson Donlan, a Kody Nordqvist or Matt Groom or Brenton Connell.

And they’re also moments for incredible young talents to announce their arrival, think guys like Inoke Tonga, Tom Blyth or a Tim Lawn or Campbell Sommerville.

Saturday’s Watters Cup final between Methven and Rakaia offered up exactly that – and more with the addition of a draw on full time and 20 remarkable minutes of extra time to find a winner.

In some ways it was a shame there had to be one.

That’s easy to say after the match, but 100 minutes of two great country rugby teams beating each other up in trying conditions with neither side willing to give an inch probably deserved that result.

That’s not taking anything away from Rakaia either.

They were, ultimately the deserved winners, but more just a casual observation of the match as a whole.

From the outset it was game on.

When Rakaia captain Jackson Donlan crashed over after just two and a half minutes, anything was possible.

Rakaia fans were on their feet and their Methven counterparts were silenced.

“We managed to get out there and catch them napping and really put our emphasis on the match,” Rakaia co-coach Terry Murray said.

That momentum quickly went back to zero though when Brenton Connell showed his brilliance with the ball in hand to waltz around a couple of defenders and get under the sticks to score, with Tyler Blackburn adding the extras.

Nothing would change for the next 30 minutes in terms of the scoreboard.

But that didn’t mean there wasn’t anything happening.

Moments came and went and Murray pointed to one particular moment as setting the tone for the rest of the match.

“Nete Caucau lined one of our guys up and absolutely drilled him, it was a big hit – but a fair hit, a really clean tackle and I’m pleased it was treated that way by the referees.

“But that moment I think set things up, we knew then that it was going to be physical and that we needed to stand up and be ready to have everything thrown at us.”

When Tyler Blackburn scored for Methven and stretched the lead to 12-5 it looked as though they had one hand on the trophy, but Rakaia kept coming.

They threw all they had at the Methven line, and when Simon Fleetwood was sent to the bin for 10 minutes and they gained a penalty try the match had suddenly been turned on it’s head.

“I thought both sides were immense for that 80 minutes,” Murray added.

“We each took our opportunities and defended like demons, it was incredible to watch.

“For us it was a case of just keeping to the plan and luckily we had talked about extra time during the week and how we might attack it.”

If anyone thought that the extra period was going to be any different than the first 80 minutes they were wrong with the kitchen sink, the oven and the microwave being thrown by both sides.

It was fitting though that one of Rakaia’s best on the day, Kody Nordqvist, was the

man who crashed his way over and scored the try to put his side in front.

“Kody was huge, he and Jackson led from the front and the boys just got around them – they were both massive parts of why we got over the line,” Murray said.

But while the big names got the limelight, Murray also pointed to the inclusion of Dan Peters which stood out.

“Dan had played 80 minutes for the senior B side, but he came on for us with 10 to go and made a massive impact.

“His clearing kicks were brilliant and he used all his experience to help guide the ship.”

After some frustrating years of luck in

finals, Rakaia can now officially bury that demon and look ahead to next year and getting back into contention for the Combined competition – something Murray is already looking forward too.

For Methven, however, as brave and as staunch as they were on Saturday – and boy were they good – it’s back to the drawing board for another year.

She can be a tough game, rugby.

And sometimes it’s a shame there has to be a winner and a loser.

2019 Heartland squad named Mid Canterbury coaches Dale Palmer and Jason Rickard have named the local element of their squad for this year’s Heartland Rugby Championship, but might still be a week or two away from including their loan and origin players to the mix.

The squad was announced at the completion of Saturday’s Watters Cup final and featured a number of prominent names from that particular match, as well as some standout performers from the club season over the past few months.

Palmer said he was pleased with the process to get to this point and that they were now looking forward to rolling the sleeves up and settling into the task at hand.

“We’re excited to get started now,” he said.

“We’ve had a few training runs with the initial squad and for about a month have been doing some work at the EA Networks Centre just to get the boys inside and break things up while they were still doing club commitments as well.

has been great, they’ve really got into what we are trying to work towards and it’s nice to firm up that squad and get ready to take the next step.”

The local aspect of the squad features some prominent names from recent years, and even some

from seasons further back with a strong mixture of experience and some new talent that’s come through the ranks this season.

After a couple of years away from the team, Jon Dampney is set to return to the mix and will be welcomed back alongside oth-

er returning players from a few years ago in Kody Nordqvist and also Nete Caucau.

“It’s huge to be able to bring some of those names back into the mix and they deserve the right to be there too because they’ve been playing some really strong rugby.

“Their presence around training has had a really strong impact on some of the younger players in the squad, it’s a little bit like what Jason and I feel like having Glenn Moore as a part of the team I’d imagine.”

Moore is over-seeing the rugby programme this year for Mid Canterbury Rugby Union and will have a significant impact into the Heartland side throughout their season.

Palmer said they were close to shoring up the final bits of the puzzle in the team with just the loan players and player of origin to be added. It was unlikely they would be confirmed however until other competitions around Canterbury have completed.

“We know what we are after and have been having some pretty se-

rious discussions, but players are still focused on what they are out to do for their clubs so once those commitments are finished we should be able to get everything locked in.”

Mid Canterbury has three warm-up games scheduled, including a match against Canterbury B, before they begin their Heartland campaign against Horowhenua Kapiti at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

All Blacks preserve record

By Christopher Reive It wasn’t pretty, but the All Blacks got the win against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Now, it’s time to move ahead.

Missing a host of their usual starters, there were questions over how the New Zealand side would front against an Argentinean team in which 20 of 23 played alongside each other for the Jaguares.

Those questions were answered with a far from perfect, but victorious performance.

The All Blacks were missing all of their Crusaders players, apart from debutants Sevu Reece, who started on the right wing, and replacement back Braydon Ennor, and that lack of quality and experience showed in the second half as the visitors were held scoreless.

But All Blacks coach Steve Hansen found many positives from the match, including the tense test-match experience gained by the rookies.

“When you take all the leadership we’ve taken out with all the Crusaders not here ... to have the opportunity for this group to go through with what they went through today is like winning the Lotto,” said Hansen.

“Our accuracy and combinations weren’t there but they

“We left four or five (tries) out there.

“We’ve learnt a lot about a lot of people this week ... both new and old.”

Hansen said the All Blacks got “exactly what they expected” in the 20-16 win.

“You can’t just snap your fingers and get the end result just like that,” Hansen said.

“It takes time and timing and time together.

“It’s the same with defence, we tweaked a few things there and

once you go past that, what you want from them is them to be able to show you that they can get out there in the heat of the battle and do that job that you ask them to do.”

First-half tries to midfielder Ngani Laumape and lock Brodie Retallick, along with a flawless kicking performance from Beauden Barrett, gave the All Blacks a 20-6 lead at half time, but the side was held scoreless in the second period as their attack staggered.

“You leave eight or nine of your top line players out, your second group comes together and plays for the first time in 4, 5, maybe 6 weeks, had a couple of weeks to try get ready for the test match – so at times we were a bit rusty,” Hansen said.

“But we did a lot of good things and I thought one of the greatest things we did was at the end with all the young fellas on the field, we showed a lot of mental fortitude so I was really pleased with that.”

The side now turns their attention to a date with South Africa in Wellington next weekend, which could see the coaches play the strategy game in their team selection, with the two meeting in the opening game of the rugby World Cup later this year.

The Maori All Blacks say their formation during the Flying Fijians’ haka on Saturday night was not malicious.

Some fans have commented on social media they felt disappointed after the Maori All Blacks appeared to have turned their back on the Fijian haka.

Rotorua local Donna-Maree Francis said she was “very sad to see them not show respect towards the Fijians’ haka”.

“We were looking forward to watching both teams do the haka but we didn’t expect to see the Maori All Blacks turn their backs and not face the challenge from the visitors,” she said.

“It just wasn’t the warm welcome we were expecting to see towards the visiting team.”

But Maori All Blacks coach Clayton McMillan said it had been taken out of context and it was just the way the team decided to start their own haka.

“There was no malice ... it was just the way the boys chose to start,” he said.

Rotorua Lakes Council cultural ambassador and kapa haka expert Trevor Maxwell said their actions were not disrespectful and he was not offended.

Maxwell admired both haka through performing arts eyes and said the Maori All Blacks got into formation in preparation for their haka.

He said the team moved into a circle with the leader chanting in the middle and it was not an uncommon move for the ritual.

The New Zealand Kiwis, the national rugby league team, did something similar, he said.

“To me, I was not offended,” he said, noting it was always good to see people getting creative with Maori performing arts.

Maxwell said the match and the lead-up to the game was a great showcase of culture and the Fijian supporters were a stand out to him.

“They outshine us as supporters ... the Fijian supporters really show passion,” he said.

When the gates opened at 4.30pm, 12,800 tickets had been sold already.

The Maori All Blacks came out on top, winning 26-17 after having lost to Fiji for the first time since 1957 at the weekend before, 27-10.

Bonus day for Ashburton Rain on what was a previously dry track led to the abandonment of yesterday’s Oamaru Cup meeting.

Stipendiary stewards called the race day off yesterday morning after it was apparent the Oamaru racecourse was unfit for thoroughbred racing.

That decision has not led to the scrapping of the 2019 Oamaru Cup. Officials have made arrangements for the Oamaru Jockey Club to hold its biggest annual meeting at Ashburton tomorrow.

Stipendiary steward Mark Davidson said the Oamaru track was simply not in a state safe enough for horses and riders yesterday.

“There were some inconsistencies with the track that meant we could not send them around.”

Parts of the track became unsafe after rain fell on a previously dry Oamaru track.

The course was rated in a good condition early on Friday.

MetService figures show Oamaru received 5.2mm of rain on Friday, 16.6mm on Saturday and more than 20mm yesterday morning.

Just 5.2mm fell in the previous 27 days, which led to the Oamaru track being in such a firm state.

Davidson said it was a case of the ground being unable to cope with the heavy deluge.

“They are just unfortunate circumstances with it being so dry here. The rain is not penetrating the ground, because it is so hard underneath.”

The Oamaru Racecourse was deemed unfit to race on yesterday.

Oamaru Jockey Club president John Foley said his club would attempt to make the best of its unfortunate situation.

Early indications suggested many of the club’s supporters would travel to Ashburton on Tuesday.

“It is not ideal, but we are going to make the best of a bad situation,” Foley said.

“Hopefully Riccarton and South Canterbury people will support the meeting as well as North Otago people.”

Kiwi UFC star Dan Hooker has returned to winning ways with a TKO over hometown fighter James Vick in San Antonio.

In his first bout for seven months, Hooker didn’t waste any time getting to work as he planted Vick with a left hand hook inside the opening three minutes of the fight.

“I trained the hardest I’ve ever trained for a fight because I know you don’t mess with Texas,” Hooker said in the octagon after his win.

It was clear Hooker went into the fight wanting to cut the cage off for the longer and taller Vick.

Working on the front foot for the majority of the fight, Hooker pressured Vick with leg kicks early and maintained his distance to mostly avoid the punches and kicks Vick threw.

The Texan did land a strong jab up the middle as Hooker pressed forward, but the Kiwi was able to shake it off and get right back to working his boxing combinations.

Hooker’s knockout with the left hand hook came just 30 seconds after narrowly missing the exact same punch twice in quick succession, and was set up with a beautiful overhand right feint to draw Vick’s hands away from his chin.

Both fighters came into the bout with losses in their most recent fights, after Hooker was beaten by Edson Barboza and Vick was toppled by Paul Felder.

The Kiwi has now finished 17 of his 19 wins and will likely return to the lightweight rankings later in the week.

“It was kind of a blessing in disguise,” he said.

“I’ve never sat on the shelf for seven months before and it’s kind of starting all over again.

“It’s completely reset me, I feel like a new fighter after that amount of time.”

It took 100 minutes of some of the most brutal rugby known to Mid Canterbury and by the time the final whistle blew it was hard to distinguish which player played for who, but it was Rakaia who

lifted the Watters Cup into the sky at the Ashburton Showgrounds having beaten Methven 19-12 on Saturday.

go on and win, but a penalty try with just over five minutes to go turned things on their head, and with scores tied after 80 minutes of edge-of-the-seat rugby, the two sides turned around and went at

it for another torrid 20 minutes.

It was Rakaia though who stood tall and when Kody Nordqvist somehow burrowed his way over right on the stroke of half-time in the first half of extra time, the title

became Rakaia’s to lose.

And they didn’t let it slip.

Despite a frenetic final stanza, they managed to hold off the Methven challenge.
