Firefighters are urging people to check the conditions before they light fires after spending several hours battling one in the Cavendish area between Mayfield and Mt Somers on Sunday night.

The fire, which spread through ember transfer from a fire lit by a farmer, required five engines, four tankers and a helicopter to contain.

Firefighters were called just before 5pm, and the first was contained just before 8pm.

“It is the biggest one for the summer so far,” rural fire officer Don Geddes said.

“It is a really good lesson for people to check the conditions before they go lighting matches.

Artists get out of their comfort zones

Nasty, dirty, loose and rough.

Those four words were just enough to get about 14 artists attending a summer school workshop to discard their traditional creative boundaries and step outside their comfort zones.

They were listening to high profile Auckland watercolourist Amanda Brett, whose artistic mantra is those four words.

“Trying not to be clean, trying not to be tidy, lots of paint, get stuck in, don’t be nice,” Brett explained.

She takes workshops in New Zealand, Australia and Italy, and is guest tutor at the Ashburton Society of Arts summer school.

Yesterday was the final day of the three-day workshop, and the class was based at Ashford Village.

This proved the perfect setting to paint a café scene, with the outdoor area of Nosh close by.

The society will hold another summer school workshop this coming weekend, with high profile painter John Badcock as guest tutor.

The only challenge for the firefighters came through navigating the log stacks, limiting vehicle access until a digger was able to clear room, meaning firefighters had to run the hoses out instead.

“We were fortunate that there were only three rows of standing douglas fir trees that were downwind and the rest of it was clear so it was not going to go any further,” he said.

“It was a priority for us that they did not spread into those trees.”

The district still remains in an open fire season which is a contrast to previous years where we would normally be in a restricted fire season, but Geddes

says he believes we will not be too far away from it changing over.

“Traditionally we would be in a restricted fire season at this point and we are probably not too far away so people should be going on to checkitsalright.nz to check the season,” he said.

Data is collected from across 17 stations in the Mid and South Canterbury areas to determine the factors that go in to setting the fire season and are checked every hour.

“It is also a wake-up for us to make sure our preparations (as firefighters) and processes are ready to go,” Geddes said.

A life spent in God’s service

Father Geoff Gray had a spiritual experience at the age of 10, which he later discerned as a calling to become a priest.

It was the beginning of a life serving God and his people in New Zealand and overseas, including South America, where he has an adopted son.

This week Father Gray’s service in Mid Canterbury comes to an end as he heads off to Akaroa after 10 years.

Gray was brought up on a sheep and crop farm on the outskirts of Timaru, and said it was while listening to a priest in the city giving his farewell speech that he felt a profound internal experience.

It was something he instinctively knew was to do with himself and priesthood.

The oldest of eight children, Gray was born into a family with a devout Catholic mother, Betty.

His father Norman was Presbyterian but committed to a Catholic upbringing for the eight children, and eventually took on the faith himself.

Gray attended St Bede’s College and completed a Bachelor of Arts at Victoria University, before at-

tending the Holy Cross College seminary at Mosgiel.

By this time he had worked out what that spiritual experience all those years ago meant, and he was answering God’s call to become a priest.

He was ordained in 1972 and began serving in Ashburton, filling in for an ill priest for three months.

He was placed in various locations around the country before being posted to the Chatham Islands. Here he was the sole priest for the island-wide parish, and directed his creativity and practicality towards starting a newspaper called The Chatham Islands News and Views. First of all it had mainly parish stories, but soon became the island newspaper and in later years was commercialised as the Chatham Islander, which still exists today.

Serving on the islands was just a taste of the promise of achievement and spiritual fulfilment which could come from travelling to lands afar.

Father Gray widened his horizons even further next time, and in 1984 asked the Christchurch Diocese Bishop Brian Ashby if he could join a friend in South America to carry out missionary work.

One year later he was granted permission to go to Bolivia, where he joined a group of priests working in Peru and Ecuador.

From 1985 to 2002, with a fouryear break in between, Father Gray learned to speak Spanish fluently and changed the lives of thousands in the poverty-stricken area.

Not only did he and his colleagues build churches, he was involved with a wide range of initiatives, including those associated with clean drinking water, education on health and hygiene, and even building a maternity hospital, helping reduce the infant mortality rate in the area.

From his time in Bolivia he has an adopted son, 33-year-old Juan Antonio Gray.

As a young teenager Juan turned up on the priest’s doorstep, asking him to be his father. Gray did not know the boy that well, only as a parishioner and student from confirmation class. Getting to know the boy a lot better, it became an easy choice to make. Juan already had a home, living with his mother, but needed a male role model in his life, and Father Gray was happy to oblige.

Father Gray also has many godsons and goddaughters in the area.

Parked outside his clergy house in Ashburton today, the number plate on his car reads PADRE. It means father in Spanish.

Today he visits Bolivia every two years to catch up with Juan, who is now a dad himself, and he last visited late 2018 when the father and son pair celebrated their birthdays together. “We have a beautiful relationship this boy and I,” he said.

Father Gray feels proud to be leaving behind a thriving parish at Holy Name in Ashburton and the three other Mid Canterbury church communities at Tinwald, Rakaia and Methven. The parish will now be served by Father Denis Nolan and Father Joaquin Camano.

One major change throughout his 10 years has been many new parishioners being new immigrants from the Philippines, Pacific Islands, Latin America and India.

“Many of these people are very committed Catholics, because of my experience of living in another culture it’s been a big help in welcoming them and helping them integrate,” he said.

Father Gray hit headlines in 2017 when he wrote to the Ashburton District Council asking it to consider contributing to floodlighting the church to help beautify the town

at night, with the idea of it being a collaborative venture between the church, the council and EA Networks. Council panned the idea, but Father Gray said it was something he would still like to see.

The church and associated clergy house had required interior repairs following the Cantebury quakes.

Today he is leaving behind the beloved Holy Name church and its distinctive brick structure, with high square tower, which isbased on the famous churches of Lombardi in Italy, as he has been transferred to the smaller parish of Akaroa.

“It’s been a busy enjoyable time and a great experience serving as a Catholic priest, helping people to live their faith and their commitment,” he said.

He had enjoyed working with the Ashburton Christian Ministers Association on events such as Christmas in the Park and organising ministry to hospitals and rest homes.

“I have met lots of very fine people here from all walks of life.”

He had also enjoyed the Ashburton lifestyle, swimming at EA Networks Centre, biking around town and walking through the beautiful Ashburton Domain.

Drink drivers to fore in court return A Filipino dairy worker will leave New Zealand soon not sure if he will be able to return because of a drink drive conviction.

Joel Bareng Ped, 28, has been on a working visa for the past two years and was caught driving with a high breath alcohol level in Methven on December 11.

Ped appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Ian Howard said Ped was stopped at 3.17pm on Main Street, Methven, and blew 1389mcg. His legal limit was 250mcg.

The arresting officer said Ped smelt of alcohol, his eyes were glazed and he was slurring his speech.

Defence counsel Roz Burnside said Ped had been working on a farm in the area for the past two years. His work visa was about to expire but he had reapplied.

She said he was due to visit his home country, but whether he returned would depend on his work visa being granted.

Judge Joanna Maze said 1389mcg was an extremely high reading and it could affect his visa chances.

She fined Ped $1000 and sentenced him to an alcohol interlock device, which means he is disqualified from driving for 28 days and can then apply for a device.

He can’t drive legally in New Zealand without an interlock device and then a zero alcohol licence.

A Tinwald man blew 1123mcg when he

was stopped on Tinwald Westerfield Mayfield Road on December 5.

John Stuart Aitchison admitted drink driving and another charge of driving contrary to his limited licence.

He has previous convictions for drink driving.

Police said Aitchison’s limited licence, issued last July, allowed him to drive from his home to his work but he had driven to Tinwald to buy dinner and that was not permitted.

He was remanded to March 18 for sentence. Judge Maze asked for a pre-sentence report to include an alcohol assessment. It is a condition of his bail that he not possess or consume alcohol.

Joshua Jhon Leath, 22, was sentenced to an alcohol interlock device after admitting driving against the terms of his zero alcohol licence in November last year.

Leath, a butcher, blew 93mcg when he was breath-tested after picking up his car from a testing station.

Defence counsel Roz Burnside said it would be Leath’s second experience with an alcohol interlock device and he credited the first with changing his lifestyle.

She said Leath had been trying to abide by driving laws since being granted a zero alcohol licence in 2016 but had been caught out when he had to collect his car after getting a warrant of fitness.

Judge Maze said Leath would no doubt be disappointed he was back on the device,

Scott Edward Tudor was fined $700 for failing to give a blood specimen for alcohol analysis. Police said the graphic designer was showing the classic symptoms of excess alcohol consumption – glazed eyes, slurred speech and smelling of alcohol – when they stopped him for a breath test at 2.30am on January 13.

Tudor, 38, failed the breath screening test and asked for a blood sample, which he later refused to give.

Defence counsel Clare Yardley said Tudor had argued with his wife then gone out drinking.

Judge Maze also disqualified Tudor for six months and ordered him to pay $137.70 medical expenses.

A 24-year-old Tinwald man reported for bad driving was stopped by police and found to be almost four times the legal breath alcohol limit.

Shadrach Stephen Taylor Katipa blew 959mcg and faces a potential alcohol interlock sentence. He has a previous high reading of 912mcg within the past five years. The legal limit for drivers 20 and over is 250mcg.

Katipa was stopped about 9.30pm on January 9 as he drove on East Street. He said he was driving to get home because he was hungry.

Katipa is currently subject to a sentence of intensive supervision, with conditions not to use alcohol or drugs.

Judge Maze convicted him of drink driving and remanded him to February 25 for sentence.

Darrian James Corbett, a dairy farm worker of Hinds, admitted breaching sentences of community work and supervision imposed in 2016 for dangerous driving.

He failed to report for community work and supervision appointments, despite warnings to comply. He had 59 hours community work still owing.

Corbett was fined $450 and the community work sentence was cancelled.

Connor Beeby, 21, was fined $350 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting drink driving.

Police stopped him on River Terrace on December 1, where he blew 482mcg.

Reuben Ngatapuna Browne, 23, of Tinwald, admitted punching a woman in the face, breaking her nose. He was remanded to March 18 for sentence, following restorative justice.

Tungane Nana Ranginui, 26, of Ashburton, was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for six months after admitting a charge of driving while her licence was suspended.

Ranginui’s licence had been suspended for three months in November but she was caught behind the wheel the following month.

Jason Henry Forsyth, 35, admitted driving while disqualified on Rawles Crossing Road on December 15.

Judge Maze noted Forsyth had been repeatedly driving while disqualified in an unhelpful cycle for some years. She sentenced him to 75 hours community work but did not impose a further driving ban.

Forsyth has at least two previous conviction for driving while disqualified and is currently banned from driving until Oc-

tober this year.

“It is far better if you don’t accumulate anymore and are given the opportunity to see your last one to the end. But it is in your hands – if you misconstrue the lenience shown, you will be back.”

Michael Pulley, 49, of Methven, was fined $450 and disqualified from driving for six months after being caught drink driving on Methven Chertsey Road on November 28.

Pulley had to undergo a blood test after the evidential breath testing machine malfunctioned and it returned 113 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Jay Vaifale, 27, had blood taken in hospital after crashing his car at the intersection of Victoria and Cass Streets at 8am on December 1. It showed 190 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Vaifale admitted charges of drink driving and careless use.

Police said Vaifale failed to give way at the intersection and hit a north-bound vehicle on Cass Street. The vehicles suffered extensive damage.

Defence counsel Clare Yardley said Vaifale did not have a car so was not suitable for an alcohol interlock device.

He was remanded to March 18 for sentence, following restorative justice.

Dominic Jordan Tumai, 24, of Hinds, was also taken to hospital after crashing his car on Isleworth Road in the early hours of November 2. A sample of his blood was taken there and it showed he had been driving with 255 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitre of blood.

Tumai pleaded guilty to charges of drink driving and careless use, and was sentenced to six months supervision, 60 hours community work and disqualified from driving indefinitely. He was also ordered to pay $111 for the blood analysis.

Police said Tumai was heading east on Isleworth Road when he lost control and hit a hedge. He was found by a member of the public. He said he could not remember much about the crash.

Defence counsel Clare Yardley said Tumai had a previous high breath alcohol reading in 2017 and had referred himself for alcohol and drug counselling.

His car had gone to the wreckers and he was not a candidate for an interlock device, she said.

An Ashburton man who crashed his car into a fence at Christchurch pulled a receipt for $1275 out of his pocket while standing in the dock to show he had paid for repairs.

Mark Andrew Jenkins, 49, admitted charges of drink driving and careless use while driving on Estuary Road on September 16 last year.

Police said Jenkins failed to take a right hand bend, went through a fence and hit a building. A sample of his blood taken at Christchurch Hospital showed he was driving with 146 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, Jenkins said he blacked out while driving.

He said his terminally ill wife was in care in Christchurch and he got a call to go up there. But he had been out drinking the night before and he also had a couple of drinks when he was in Christchurch.

“I should have just stayed in Ashburton,” he told Judge Maze.

The judge noted Jenkins previous criminal convictions were almost 20 years old and said she would keep the disqualification to a minimum so he could spend time with his wife.

She sentenced him to six months supervision and banned him from driving for six months.

Wallaby trail cold despite possible second sighting

There has been a second potential sighting of Methven’s rogue wallaby.

Nevertheless the trail has gone cold for biosecurity officials, who want to catch and kill the escapee.

Environment Canterbury biosecurity team leader South Canterbury Brent Glentworth said a truck driver had reported that he may have seen a wallaby near the Rakaia Gorge on January 16. The possible sighting could be of the same creature sighted by a Methven motorist on January 1, on Mt Hutt Station Road. The two sighting locations are only about 1.5 kilometres apart.

A contractor had been out looking for faecal and other signs of the wallaby so bait could be laid, or it could be flushed out with dogs. However, no signs had been observed, so these control measures could not be undertaken.

“Because these individuals are so scarce in this area we hope that even if we can’t track it down it would die without reproducing,” Glentworth said.

Only two were needed to breed, and he hoped there were no other illegally released wallabies in the area, as this gave rise to the risk of a population establishing in Mid Canterbury.

“The chances are low but the risk is certainly real,” he said.

The cost to the environment and agricultural industry would be extensive.

ECan is investigating how the marsupial came to be in Mid Canterbury and believe it was illegally released.

Wallabies are legally confined to the zone between the Rangitata and Waitaki rivers, but have been sighted as far afield as Marlborough, Dunedin and Amberley.

Outlying individuals have generally either escaped from, or been released by, people who have transported them from the containment zone.

Sometimes hunters take them as joeys from their dead mother’s pouches, while others are removed as adults.

Anyone sighting a wallaby is asked to report it to ECan through its online wallaby geomap or phone 080-032-4636.

Refresh children’s road safety skills Police are encouraging parents to talk to their children as they prepare for a new school year.

“The school summer holidays are long, and that means children are out of practice at getting to and from school,” operations manager for the National Road Policing Centre Inspector Peter McKennie said.

“They may have forgotten some of the basics of road safety and some children may be starting school for the first time.

“It’s a good idea for parents to sit down with their kids before the end of the holidays and have a conversation around road safety rules, especially if your child is going to be going to school on their own.”

Planning the safest route to get there, going on a few practise walks or bikes with them are important, said McKennie.

“Help them to choose the safest route to get there and do a few practise walks or bikes with them, so they are familiar with the route and the safest places to cross,” he said.

“It is important to remind them that any time they are crossing the road they must stop, look, and listen for any cars, motorbikes, or cyclists before they step out.”

Police also urge all older children and

adults to be good role models on the road and remember that kids are watching you and will do what you do.

“If you break the rules, children will think this is the norm and follow suit,” he said.

Set a good example; look both ways before crossing the road, use pedestrian crossings where they are available, wait for the green cross signal at traffic lights, and if you’re driving, make sure everybody is buckled up.

“Motorists; remember to watch your speed around schools and be extra alert in case a child runs out in front of you without warning,” he said.

Children can make mistakes and they don’t deserve to pay for them with their life.

“Even small increases in speed result in a much greater increase in your stopping distance, and that can mean the difference between life and death for pedestrians, so it’s vital you slow down around schools.”

You need to drive at a speed and in a manner that enables you to respond safely to the unexpected.

“How you drive makes the difference,” McKennie said.

Police also reminds drivers that the speed limit for passing school buses stopped to let children on or off is 20km/h.

May seeks to avoid split British news reports say that Prime Minister Theresa May plans to reject a cross-party consensus on Brexit in favour of avoiding a Conservative split.

May is due to layout her plan B to Parliament today.

Sky News reported that May would present a plan to ditch the Irish ‘backstop’ to gain the support of Tory rebels and the DUP, which backs Britain’s minority government.

The news site said that May held a conference call with her Cabinet.

She made it clear that the level of support “expected from Labour MPs was not deemed strong enough to pass” Brexit legislation before Britain leaves, Sky News reported.

A Sunday Times report speculated that a bilateral treaty between London and Dublin could replace the backstop.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney tweeted that the Irish Government was committed to the entire withdrawal deal, “including the backstop”.

Starmer said there was a roadblock in the way of a solution to the Brexit crisis, “and that roadblock is the Prime Minister.”

China’s economic growth sinks to 30-year low China’s economic growth fell to a three-decade low in 2018 as business activity lagged amid a tariff war with Washington.

The world’s second-largest economy expanded by 6.6 per cent over a year earlier, down from 2017’s 6.9 per cent, official data showed Monday. Growth in the three months that ended in December cooled to 6.4 per cent from the previous quarter’s 6.5 per cent.

Communist leaders are trying to steer China to slower, more self-sustaining growth based on consumer spending instead of trade and investment. But the slowdown has been sharper than expected, prompting Beijing to step up government spending and

order banks to lend more to shore up growth and avoid politically dangerous job losses.

Economic activity held up through most of 2018 despite President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on Chinese imports in a fight over Beijing’s technology ambitions. But exports contracted more sharply than forecast in December as the penalties began to depress demand.

Growth in 2018 was the lowest since 1990’s 3.9 per cent in the aftermath of the violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square the year before.

all declined, the National Bureau of Statistics reported.

The slowdown is adding to pressure on President Xi Jinping’s government to settle its dispute with Washington.

In a possible sign of progress, the Chinese government announced that its top trade envoy, vice premier Liu He, will visit Washington for talks late January. Business groups and economists said a decision by Liu and his American counterpart, Robert Lighthizer, to get directly involved would suggest earlier talks by lower-level officials made progress.

Trump said that trade relations with China were “going very well” and “a deal could very well happen”.

Forecasters expect growth to decline further this year to 6.3 per cent or lower. They predict the decline will bottom out this year as Beijing’s stimulus efforts gain traction.

Chinese leaders warned earlier any recovery would be “L-shaped,” meaning companies and investors shouldn’t expect growth to rebound to the previous decade’s double-digit levels.

“A key downside risk to the Chinese growth outlook will be if the US-China trade war escalates, should the temporary truce expire without any trade deal being struck,” Rajiv Biswas of IHS Markit said in an email.

Beckhams not divorcing Victoria Beckham has finally addressed the long-running and ever-persistent rumours that she and her husband David Beckham are on the brink of divorce.

The couple were hit by claims their marriage was in trouble last year – after 19 years together. However, the motherof-four called the rumours “completely fabricated” and admitted that the constant speculation was “annoying” and “frustrating”. She told The Guardian: “It can get quite frustrating. But I leave it to my PR team. I don’t get involved. “You do have to be quite controlling because people do believe what they read.”

Israel confirms attacking Iran forces in Syria In an extraordinary statement, the Israeli military confirmed yesterday that it attacked Iranian military targets in Syria, hours after carrying out a rare daylight air raid near the Damascus International Airport.

The statement was issued hours after Israeli missile defenses intercepted an incoming missile over the Golan Heights in the wake of the airport raid.

Until now Israel has largely refrained from public admissions of its covert military operations in neighboring Syria, in order to avoid large-scale involvement in the eight-year civil war.

The Syrian military said Israel carried out intensive air-

strikes with successive waves of guided missiles shortly, but added that Syrian air defenses destroyed most of the missiles before they reached their targets.

Syrian state media said air defenses repelled an Israeli air raid near the international airport south of Damascus.

Israeli warplanes have used Lebanon’s airspace recently to strike deep inside Syria, including attacking a warehouse near Damascus International Airport earlier this month, according to Syrian state media.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently confirmed that Israel has struck hundreds of targets in Syria

linked to Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group, including a weapons facility two weeks ago. Iran and Hezbollah are allied with the Syrian government in the civil war.

Two hours after the reports that Israel’s Iron Dome intercepted a rocket fired toward the Golan Heights.

Earlier, a roadside bomb went off south of Damascus without causing casualties, state media reported. The SANA news agency said the blast targeted a military checkpoint on a main highway during rush hour.

Attacks have been rare in Damascus since Syrian government forces captured the last

rebel-held neighborhoods and suburbs of the capital last year.

Bombings have left hundreds dead over the course of the nearly eight-year civil war.

The attack came on the anniversary of a Turkish military operation that evicted Kurdish fighters from the town and displaced tens of thousands of its residents. The town now is under the control of Turkey-backed Syrian opposition fighters.

The Syrian Civil Defense, an opposition-linked group known as the White Helmets, said that the blast killed “martyrs” and that others were wounded and rushed to hospitals.

All systems go for Mid Canterbury I

t’s taken a couple of weeks, but it finally feels like the Mid Canterbury district is back and firing on all cylinders.

There’s this little period, every year in the first few weeks of January, where it’s hard to distinguish exactly what’s happening in our little corner of the country.

It’s not quite desolate, but it might as well be – half the population seems gone and the streets are just that little bit quieter.

If the imagination runs wild enough, you can envisage the tumbleweed rolling it’s way down East Street mid-morning and an otherwise peaceful CBD being disturbed only by the odd

car or siren.

But there’s a point where everything gets back to normal.

Transmission returns and we settle safely into the work of the year ahead.

And the way things kicked into gear on the weekend, I think it’s safe to assume that we, as a

district, are well and truly up and running for the challenge that will be 2019.

And things have certainly started on a positive note, too.

News of the success of the Mid Canterbury cricket team on the weekend in their endeavour to make it past the zone stage and earn a challenge at the Hawke Cup was an awesome result for a group of young men who now get to dare to dream, a dream that only a small percentage of cricketers around the country get the chance to dream about.

As a district it’s now our duty to get behind this side, opportunities like this only come around

from time-to-time, so we need to make the most of it and really grab it by the horns like the Buller district did a few years ago.

The weekend also saw a lively return to the internationally acclaimed Trotts Garden for an open day.

We have this incredible venue on our very own back doorstep, its own beauty is almost blinding, but it seems very few people from around here actually like to go and enjoy it’s splendour.

On the weekend though they flowed through the gates and what a positive result that is for all concerned.

Yesterday the Ashburton District Court returned and later this week the Ashburton Mayor, Donna Favel and her band of councillors will return for the New Year surely fresh, primed and ready for what is going to be a very intriguing year around the council table as we build into the local government elections in October.

So, it’s safe to say it’s finally all systems go for the Ashburton District for 2019.

Who knows what lies ahead but it’s going to be fun, now that we’re right into things, to watch and see what might unfold during 2019.

Busting myths about crop residue burning

ost residents will be familiar with the tone of the Ashburton town fire alarm and the race of volunteers to get to the fire station to assist with the emergency.

On a nice hot day in the middle of summer some might assume that the volunteers are racing off to suppress an out-of-control crop residue burn that some irresponsible farmer has lit and left to escape. Wrong.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) is now mandated and funded to undertake a wider range of emergency response activities than ever before including medical emergencies, supporting at traffic accidents, natural disaster response and other response operations.

So just because the siren is going off in the middle of summer does not mean that they are attending an escaped crop residue burn.

More than ever before, farmers are subjected to greater regulatory controls around crop residue burning. In a restricted fire season, farmers now need a permit from FENZ and must adhere to the conditions of that permit, which are based on the old Ashburton District Council and Federated Farmers Code of Practice guidelines.

Permits are free and can be applied for at any time at www. checkitsalright.nz Unlike before, where the regulator could cost recover from a land owner in the event of escape, now FENZ can issue an infringement notice for breaches of, or lack of. a permit.

will be undertaking agricultural crop residue burns, which are best described as the process of removing residue after harvest through combustion (fire) in the paddock.

This process is the most environmentally benign method of removing crop residues and other weeds/diseases before planting the next crop.

Having weed and pest-free paddocks is especially important when the next planting may be a small-seeded, high value crop.

Any nutrients are also returned to the soil as part of this process.

Agricultural crop residue burning is one of the most effective non-chemical means of weed management for arable crops. It also keeps expenses down, which ultimately benefits consumers.

Environment Canterbury’s Air Regional Plan implements some tougher rules for crop residue burning which are designed to manage the adverse effects on neighbours and urban residents.

All farmers are now required to undertake a smoke management plan, which identifies how they will manage these effects. T hose farmers who live within four kilometres of Ashburton and Timaru now live in crop residue b uffer zones and are required to apply for a consent to burn.

Email us! but the alternatives to agricultural crop residue burning have the same or a greater long-term impacts.

According to FAR’s 2013 report on stubble burning, the main alternatives to stubble/crop residue burning are: surface/top work by a tractor, full inversion cultivation, direct drilling and other various cultivation methods.

All these alternatives require more diesel burned in the tractor, some chemical application and more ground work, which can damage soil structures and reduce soil nutrients.

Agricultural crop residue burning has been banned in parts of the world, including Great Britain, and these areas are now suffering a huge weed burden which they cannot easily overcome.

Blackgrass is one such weed which is rampant in the United Kingdom, with back-to-back cropping and chemicals methods needed to control this

persistent weed.

While blackgrass has been found in Canterbury, it is being eradicated. The cost to the primary sector if blackgrass was to establish in New Zealand has been estimated at $8.14 million and $84.24 million, depending on to what degree the weed can be controlled.

So, while you may be concerned about the short term impact of agricultural crop residue burning on the environment, farmers are undertaking measures to mitigate the effect of their discharge into air and it is an important part of the arable farmers toolbox in Canterbury.

YOUR VIEW Community Christmas lunch On behalf of the Ashburton Community Christmas Lunch Committee I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making our event on Christmas Day such a friendly and successful one.

A wide cross-section of our community attended the lunch this year at the Tinwald Hall, and approximately 140 people enjoyed a delicious meal.

The main purpose of the lunch is to ensure that people who may

have spent Christmas Day without their family are made to feel part of a “community family”.

We are very grateful to everyone who helped us achieve this including local businesses and individuals who donated food, to Dan Lysaght for cooking the meal, and all the hard-working volunteers who helped on the day.

Trotts open day I am writing to congratulate the Guardian for superb coverage and photos of our recent Trotts Gardens Free Open Day. The photos are so amazing.

The promotional support from The Ashburton Guardian, Hokonui radio and the Courier displayed the effectiveness using local media to get our message across and resulted in a superb day at the gardens last Sunday.

The gardens are a stunning local resource, a garden of international acclaim which is being superbly supported by sponsors,

Dairy cow numbers dip again Dairy cattle numbers have dipped for the second year in contrast to the national beef cattle herd increasing strongly last year, says Stats NZ. Initial census figures show dairy cattle numbers fell 1 per cent, to 6.4 million in the year to June.

This is well below the 2014 peak of 6.7 million.Agricultural production statistics manager Stuart Pitts said the decline followed a similar small dip in 2017.

However, overall dairy cattle numbers have been relatively steady since 2012, he said.

“Dairy products are a huge export for New Zealand,’’ he said.

“The value of milk powder, butter, and cheese exports for the year ended June 2018 was 14.1 billion.”

Beef cattle numbers rose for the second year in a row, up 5 per cent to 3.8 million last year.

Total sheep numbers eased again, down 1 per cent to 27.3 million.

“Sheep numbers have fallen in 10 of the past 12 years, in total down about 12.8 million from about 40.1 million in 2006,” said Pitts.

“New Zealand now has 5.6 sheep for every person, after peaking at 22 sheep for every person in 1982.”

A large fall in sheep and beef cattle numbers since 1990 means overall stock units have also reduced in the past 28 years, despite a rise in dairy cattle numbers.

The stock unit – a measurement of comparing different types of animals – is based on the annual feed needed for a 55 kilogram ewe rearing a single lamb.

A dairy cow is the equivalent of about seven ewes, so is counted as seven stock units, compared with just one stock unit for a ewe. In 1990 there were 100 million stock

units in total, more than half of those sheep, with most of the rest in beef and dairy cattle.

Deer make up a small part of the total.

By 2004, total stock unit numbers fell to 94 million and last year were down to 86 million.

“The large drop in stock units since 1990 mainly reflects a halving in sheep numbers, down from 53 million stock units to 25 million,” Pitts said.

“In the same period, dairy stock units almost doubled to 41 million. By 2018 dairy cattle made up almost half of all livestock units.”

A Ministry for Primary Industries report on January 11 showed that about 52,000 dairy cattle have been culled as part of the response to mycoplasma bovis.

MARKET REPORT

BY GUY TRAFFORD New Zealand horticulture has made the news recently with the demand for fruit harvesters that is not being met.

With the unemployment rate hovering around the 4 per cent (3.90 is latest data) the likelihood of finding enough staff from that sector is reasonably remote. The same issue has been ongoing for agriculture.

Dairying has had an ongoing issue with finding and maintaining staff and while sheep and beef and cropping have lower rates of turnover, finding new staff has still been a problem and getting more difficult by the year.

When the age profile of those working in agriculture is examined then more concern should be raised.

While most New Zealand industries have some variation of a bell shaped curve, agriculture, based upon the 2013 census results, has a distinctly lopsided graph with the major age group involved being the 65-plus group at over 14 per cent. This is 3 per cent higher than the next largest group 50-54 at 11.3 per cent and, when compared to the average New Zealand workers’ age of around 43, it is over 4 per cent higher.

This does not paint a positive picture going forward for NZ ag and, with the demise of agricultural training institutions, it is not going to get better anytime soon.

Any solution is proving elusive, bringing in more migrants will meet some of the requirements, but the need has now grown so great that productivity is being affected.

For some time large back country stations have had to curtail their expectations around farm intensification due to the additional staffing needs required to operate such systems, likewise some dairy farms.

More migrants from a worker’s perspective also means that there is more demand for housing and inevitable downward pressure on workers’ wages.

An article by Andrew Coleman discusses whether New Zealand’s taxation system is adversely affecting productivity by the signals it sends through the taxation process. New Zealand is lagging behind other OECD countries when it comes to productivity and this is largely due to a lack of capital going into areas of productivity.

So, investing in newer and more efficient technologies should be seen as part of the solution. However, while most sectors are enjoying reasonably good returns at the moment, there is no guarantee these will remain and, with the already large rural debt, investors will need to think hard about adding to it in uncertain times.

Markets

Little change to markets overall from last week when the major news was the lift in the Global Dairy Trade auction, the fourth in succession.

Sheep Lamb schedules have had some tweaking downwards and mutton schedules remain largely unchanged.

Saleyard prices have reduced as a result of the falling works’ prices and, with the climate now reverting to more normal patterns, growth has reduced, reducing demand, and more store lambs are coming on to the market.

Wool The sale last week held on to the small gains made in the previous sale, however, brokers comments seem to indicate they still think prices are at a precarious level with buyers being somewhat fickle.

Cattle Manufacturing grades remained unchanged but there was some positive movement in the prime grades although nothing too dramatic. Stores prices remained firm.

Venison The largest falls in the schedules occurred here with prices dropping by about 15 cents per kg. Fortunately, producers have been receiving good prices for velvet which for those who farm for it will be getting some compensation.

Dairy Both the GDT and the NZ dollar are helping to make dairy prospects significantly brighter than what they were three to four months ago. In the US a touch of the ironic is occurring with dairy farmers meant to be receiving government payouts as compensation for price falls due to the Trump trade wars. However, payments have stalled lately due to the government shut-down with the impasse over the Federal budget, also being blamed upon the US president’s lack of compromise.

The rich getting richer While New Zealand’s richest men just got a lot richer, the collective wealth of the country’s poor nose-dived.

A report, Public Good or Private Wealth, being released by Oxfam yesterday shows how the growing gap between rich and poor was undermining the fight against poverty, damaging local economics and fuelling public anger across the globe.

Oxfam’s executive director Rachael Le Mesurier says their report concentrated only on billionaires, of which New Zealand has two – Graeme Hart and Richard Chandler.

Chandler, based in Singapore, was drawn into the worldwide Panama Papers tax avoidance scandal after it was revealed he used the law firm Mossack Fonseca at the centre of the controversy.

Hart has amassed a $US10.1 billion ($14.98b) fortune, while Chandler has $2.1b, she said.

The report reveals their collective wealth increased by $NZ1.1b while the poorest 50 per cent of

New Zealand’s population decreased their wealth by $NZ1.3b.

Other stark facts show the top 5 per cent has more wealth – 45 per cent – than the bottom 90 per cent – 42 per cent, while the top 1 per cent of the population has 25 per cent of all wealth in New Zealand.

Le Mesurier said they were focusing on the issue of appropriately taxing wealth in New Zealand, not income tax on everyday Kiwis.

“One of the key things we can do to tackle inequality here and across the world is to tax wealth more.

“Our taxes pay for schools, hospitals and infrastructure ... across the world, rich multinational corporations and extremely wealthy individuals are not paying their fair share.”

Oxfam was now waiting to see what Michael Cullen’s Tax Working Group final report will come up with when it’s released in the next month or two.

The Labour-led government risks electoral defeat in 2020 unless it makes demonstrable progress on affordable housing this year, says the outspoken author of an annual survey of global housing affordability. Hugh Pavletich, the Christchurch-based co-author of the Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey, says that the results of the 2019 survey “will come as a shock” to New Zealand’s Labour-led government. The major markets unaffordability in New Zealand is driven particularly by Auckland and Tauranga.

KiwiSaver rule unfair Government officials have declined to back a call to make it compulsory for all employers’ to make KiwiSaver contributions to over 65year-olds. Under the current law it is up to individual employers to decide if they keep putting money into their staff members’ account when they turn 65. Many employers do but others stop the payments when a person turns 65 – a situation which has created an uneven playing field for older workers. Claire Matthews, a retirement savings expert, told the finance and expenditure select committee last year that the policy was unfair.

She said the gap had been continuing to grow since the inception of their reports about five years ago.

“What we’ve been seeing, particularly in the last four years, this gap has been getting bigger and if we see that.

“Wealth begets wealth, we know this and for at least a third of the billionaires they’ve inherited their wealth so they’ve started ahead of the game.”

What Oxfam was most concerned about in New Zealand was the drop in collective wealth by the poorest 50 per cent of the population.

“I think that should be what’s worrying all New Zealanders. It’s not about attacking the extremely wealthy, it’s really saying it’s not okay that the poor are looking backwards at the same time.

“This gap is getting bigger.”

A signature feature of Lime is its huge war chest.

It’s a mark of the San Francisco-based company’s deep pockets that it currently has 1000 e-scooters on the streets of Auckland, plus another 1000 in reserve in a Kingsland warehouse – just in case the council agrees to expand the number allowed under its trial licence, to enable a push into outer suburbs.

It’s also putting a couple of million into safety events, PR and government lobbying.

By contrast, home-grown rival Onzo and Australia’s Wave are both sitting out the trial period (which expires March 31), wanting to see how Lime fares before committing funds to local e-scooter rollouts.

Expect the disparity in resources to continue, for Lime has a $US400 million ($593m) raise under way at a US$2 billion valuation.

Existing major investors Google Ventures and Uber are expected to tip in more funds, with Bain Capital set to come onboard as a new backer, according to Recode, an online technology and deal-tracking site.

Lime has circulated documents to investors about raising capital in two tranches (one $US100m, the second $US300m) but a Wall Street Journal report says Uber is also considering a bid to buy Lime outright.

Neither company would comment.

Lime has so far raised $US455m in three rounds of funding, easily the largest of which was the $US335 effort last July supported

by Google Ventures and Uber.

Does Lime make money?

A Wall Street Journal report has estimated Lime and its rivals typically make $US20 revenue a day for each of their scooters, “suggesting significant profit potential given they cost about $500 apiece”.

However, it also notes that e-scooters have a hard life, and the cost of repairs and maintenance is not known.

Lime is also under political and regulatory pressure over safety issues around the world – including here where a per-ride fee or “Lime levy” is emerging as a likely con-

dition of a permanent trading licence.

Both Lime and Auckland council are talking about a per-ride levy primarily going into a fund for new or upgraded cycleways – but Lime is also open to a slice of it going to ACC. That would help appease the e-scooter company’s critics, but also put pressure on its path to profitability if it becomes a common template (the two-year-old Lime is now in more than 100 cities, still trying to negotiate its way on to the streets of New York, Sydney and elsewhere).

Getting to the root of it

ardening has a long and important history in New Zealand. Starting with the first Maori settlers in around 1400 and then European settlers in around 1800, gardening was an essential part of everyday life because of crops like kumara, potatoes and yams being a main part of people’s diets.

While Maori mainly grew vegetables, the European settlers brought many new ideas about gardening. These ideas included having flowers in your garden just to look nice, the idea of front and back gardens, and the use of fertiliser, which meant the same patch of land could be reused for many crops.

These ideas were all important introductions to the New Zealand gardening scene.

But with these new ideas and crops came the nasty part of every garden: weeds. Weekends in today’s gardens are spent killing and removing weeds, mowing the lawn and pruning bushes.

Gardening has become a pasttime rather than an essential part of life, but people still take gardening very seriously.

As more and more information comes out about pesticides used on our fruit and vegetables or the wax used on apples to make them shiny, people are starting to grow their own vegetables again.

The domain continues to be one of Ashburton’s main attractions.

As well as the domain, Trotts Garden also shows off its English style with neatly-trimmed hedges and beautiful flowers filling its garden, attracting visitors from far and wide.

I’m sure many Ashburtonians have memories of fish ‘n’ chips in the domain on a hot summer’s night, under the great trees and sitting on the vast lawns.

Feeding the ducks and dipping your feet in the paddling pool are also great summer memories from the domain!

During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army.

Many did not return – almost 450 from Ashburton were killed.

The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 – the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum.After the cessation of hostilities when the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, a number of other soldiers, including some from Ashburton, died from wounds received, from illness and accident.

Ko crashes out in final round Lydia Ko had a one shot lead with 11 to play at the LPGA’s season opening Tournament of Champions – and then it all went downhill.

The two-time major winner was seeking her 21st title as a pro but went six-over in the remainder of her final round to finish seven shots behind playing partner and eventual winner Eun-Hee Ji of Korea.

Ko went from 13-under to seven-under following two double bogeys, three bogeys and a birdie in her final 11 holes.

A poor stretch rarely seen by Ko, especially in a final round.

The big momentum shift came at the par five

13th when Ko, trailing Korean Ji by a shot, went well left on her drive and ended up with a double bogey.

A birdie for Ji made it a three shot swing and put Ko four shots back. A bogey at the next hole, the par three 14th, all but ended Ko’s hopes of opening 2019 with a victory which would have been her first since April last year.

She found the water on the 18th for a second double bogey to finish the tournament at seven-under with a final round 77 in eighth place.

Ji ended up two shots clear of compatriot Mirim Lee to claim her fifth career win on the LPGA Tour.

Salah keeps Liverpool alive Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 4-3 yesterday to maintain their push for the English Premier League football title.

Andros Townsend gave Palace a surprise lead in the first half but after Salah levelled a minute into the second half, Roberto Firmino put Liverpool in front in the 53rd minute.

Palace equalised through a James Tomkins header in the 65th minute but a blunder by visiting goalkeeper Julian Speroni gifted Liverpool the lead again.

The Argentine goalkeeper, who will turn 40 in May, was making his first appearance since December 2017 because of injuries to Wayne Hennessey and Vicente Guaita.

He palmed James Milner’s bouncing cross up in the air, virtually into his own net, before Salah made it 3-2 on the goal-line in the 75th minute.

However, there was a manic finish with Sadio Mane and Palace substitute Max Mayer both scoring in stoppage time after Milner had been sent off for a second bookable offence on Wilfried Zaha.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer racked up a sixth successive league win at the start of his Manchester United reign thanks to Paul Pogba’s penalty and Marcus Rashford’s strike securing a 2-1 win over Brighton.

On a day of commemorations to mark 25 years since the death of Matt Busby, Solskjaer sur-

passed the start of the managerial great who achieved five wins in a row when he set out at United in 1945.

“Maybe in 10, 15, 20 years, I’ll look back on things like this,” he said.

“I don’t care whatsoever about records.

“But of course to be part of a team that’s winning so much, that feels great.”

United remain in sixth, just as it was when Solskjaer was hired to replace Jose Mourinho a month ago, but now Champions League qualification is back on the cards.

The race for fourth is looking wide open, with fourth-placed Chelsea only three points ahead of Arsenal and United.

In brief Zverev hits rage mode An agitated Alexander Zverev’s Australian Open campaign has been obliterated – as well as his racquet – in defeat to big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in the fourth round. Raonic, the 16th seed, was too strong 6-1 6-1 7-6 (7-5) against an out-of-sorts Zverev, whose temper flared in another poor showing at a grand slam. The young German fourth seed smashed a racquet in the second set after serving three double faults in one game to go down 4-1.

Barty staying cool

Even as his uninterrupted dominance of yore dissipated, even as he took the occasional break, Roger Federer always mattered more often than not in the closing days of Grand Slam tournaments.

Until lately, that is.

Until, at age 37, he was outplayed in the Australian Open’s fourth round by a much younger man, 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas, during a 6-7 (11), 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (5) surprise that ended Federer’s bid for a third consecutive championship at Melbourne Park.

“I have massive regrets,” said Federer, who failed to convert any of the 12 break points he earned against Tsitsipas, the first player from Greece to reach a major quarter-final.

This loss makes it a fourth straight Slam without Federer in the semi-finals: He skipped the 2018 French Open, was beaten at Wimbledon in the quarter-finals and exited the US Open in the fourth round.

That is his longest such drought since he claimed the first of his men’s record 20 major titles, in 2003 at Wimbledon.

“Roger is a legend of our sport.

“So much respect for him. I’ve been idolising him since the age of 6,” said Tsitsipas, who has worked with Serena Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

“It was a dream come true for me ... just facing him,” Tsitsipas said about Federer. “Winning at the end? I cannot describe it.”

Federer was the oldest man left in the field and would have been the oldest quarter-finalist in Australia since Ken Rosewall at 43 in 1977.

Tsitsipas, a lanky guy who kept his scraggly hair in place with a pink headband, was the youngest to make the fourth round this year.

Barty is within three tantalising wins of becoming Australia’s first Open singles champion in 41 years after staging a stirring fightback to beat Maria Sharapova in a dramacharged fourth-round encounter on Sunday. Tiafoe to meet Nadal The next chapter in the improbable tennis tale of American showman Frances Tiafoe will be a blockbuster Australian Open quarterfinal against the great Rafael Nadal. “It’s crazy man,” Tiafoe said.

No kidding. The son of immigrants from war-torn Sierra Leone, Tiafoe was first introduced to the sport at a wealthy tennis centre in Maryland where his father was a maintenance worker. Osaka still on course US Open champion Naomi Osaka confessed to being inspired by fellow young guns Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe after edging a step closer to back-toback grand slam crowns yesterday.

Osaka scrapped her way into the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time with a 4-6 6-3 6-4 fourth-round triumph over Latvian 13th seed Anastasija Sevastova. For the second straight match Osaka had to battle back from a set down to progress at Melbourne Park, but the world No.4 never panicked on Rod Laver Arena. “I was thinking I’ve been in this position before and actually last time it was a little bit worse,” Osaka said.

Svitolina into quarters Sixth seed Elina Svitolina is safely through to the Australian Open quarter-finals after a see-sawing battle with American Madison Keys. In brief Sticking with league His dream may be to play for the All Blacks but NRL star Kalyn Ponga isn’t switching to rugby union any time soon. Queensland young gun Ponga has moved to clarify comments that his goal is to become a member of the all-conquering New Zealand rugby team, saying they were taken out of context.

Alarm bells were sounding for the NRL after Ponga said last year that donning the All Blacks jersey would be the pinnacle and did not rule out a switch.

Flanagan resigns Cronulla face a hasty process to settle on a new coach before the NRL season, with interim John Morris no certainty to take over following Shane Flanagan’s resignation yesterday. A month after being provisionally deregistered by the NRL for continued contact with the club during his 2014 ban, Flanagan conceded his nine-year reign was over. Morris declared last week he wanted the job longterm if Flanagan didn’t return, but the club said it would make an announcement on the role “in coming weeks”.

Ward takes top honours Tony Ward scooped the major spoils in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s 45km handicap event around the Methven block on Sunday.

In doing so he lifted the Dean Cooksley Memorial trophy along with the fastest time ribbon.

With lifting winds it was made for the back markers to make their way through the field and

this proved to be the case.

Ward and his co-markers found the front inside the final 5km, with the result hinging on who had enough sting in their legs to finish off the sprint.

Ward found the line strongly to take victory, recording a time of 70.46.

Oliver Davidson charged into

second place and lifted second fastest time honours.

Steve Hands secured the final podium position and thirdfastest time.

Wayne Clement produced a solid ride to take fourth spot.

Steve Caldwell and Dave Knight tamed the conditions to round out the top six.

Caitlin Titheridge showed her growing potential in the sport, securing the women’s fastest time ribbon in her first season in the senior ranks.

Janette Hooper took division 2 honours.

Next week the club travels to Rakaia to contest a 50km handicap event.

Diamonds claim series A beaten-up Australia have won netball’s Quad Series in bittersweet fashion after going down 52-49 to arch rivals England in London.

The Roses were roared home at the Copper Box yesterday) in a match which may well be a precursor to the World Cup final in Liverpool in July. Both teams finished on two wins but Australia clinch the four-nation title on goal differential, having beaten New Zealand and South Africa.

England had been stunned by the Proteas, leaving them in need of a five-goal winning margin. The match was similar to last April’s Commonwealth Games final, but England again showing more composure when it mattered.

Silver Ferns win epic extra-time thriller

By Liam Napier They did it the hard way but the Silver Ferns eventually delivered clinical composure to down South Africa 62-60 in extra time of their final Quad Series match.

Sixty minutes was not nearly enough to separate the teams in dramatic scenes at London’s sold out Copper Box Arena.

There were so many twists and turns it is hard to know where to begin.

With seconds remaining in regular time, Ferns shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio hit the long shot tie the game and force extra time.

Down by two in the second seven-minute period of extra time, the Ferns somehow clawed their way back; Maria Folau dropping a long bomb to bring her side level and force the match to continue until one side established a twogoal lead.

With both teams right out on their feet, finally the Ferns found a break and put the match to bed

and take extra time 17-15.

South Africa’s only previous victory in 33 attempts against New Zealand came at the 1995 World Cup in Birmingham.

One day after they shocked hosts England, South Africa threatened to repeat those efforts on New Zealand.

But in a much-needed confidence boost after successive losses to England and Australia, Taurua’s side refused to crumble.

Much work remains with the World Cup in Liverpool only six months away but one win is certainly better than none.

This time, the Ferns started with such promise.

Rectifying their tendency to start slowly, they burst out of the blocks to score the first eight goals and justify Taurua’s ploy for continuity in maintaining the starting seven which combined well for three quarters of their loss to Australia.

Laura Langman dominated the middle, and Karin Burger again

impressed at wing defence; her tall, strong presence nabbing three intercepts in the first quarter and one crucial tip in the final period with South Africa up by one.

Burger is not the finished product but if there is one bright spark to come from this event it is her rapid emergence.

In those early stages the Ferns were in total control.

Sensing the game slipping away, Norma Plummer pushed Lenize Potgieter from goal attack back to her more accustomed goal shoot role – the switch allowing South Africa to quickly adjust and find their feet.

Taking a five goal buffer into the first break, the Ferns started the second quarter in a shambolic state.

Just as Ekenasio was due to return to court she suffered a bleeding nose. The confusion saw the Ferns start with six players, eventually injecting Maia Wilson at goal shoot and moving Maria Folau to goal attack.

Wilson, in her first appearance of the tournament, struggled to shake the nerves. She hit 5/6 but two fumbles were turned over and she also gave away one penalty.

The Ekenasio disruption, combined with too many erratic moments from the Ferns on attack with ball thrown away or squandered, gave South Africa regular chances to chip away at the lead.

They did just that, taking the second quarter 11-8 and heading to half time two points adrift.

Once again, problematic inconsistency plagued the Ferns.

Ekenasio returned after the interval.

By that stage, though, South Africa found their tempo and applied further pressure to take the third quarter by two goals and draw level for the final turn.

South Africa nailed their centre pass and, so, all the pressure fell on the Ferns to chase the game from then on.This time they delivered.

Yes, they saw him win the NZ Cup, but most felt he was half blessed off a soft run to beat their own subsequent Inter Dominion winner, Tiger Tara.

But the doubters were silenced in Saturday night’s $110,000 Group 1 Ballarat Cup. The sheer way Thefixer emerged from a tricky spot and exploded in the last 40m to storm to victory was quite a statement.

Time spent out of the Big Bash League has proven to be a blessing in disguise for last minute Australian test squad call-up Kurtis Patterson.

60mm x 30.7mm The NSW left-handed batsman has failed to get a look in for his BBL outfit Sydney Thunder’s first nine matches this season.

Patterson instead used his time to work on his longer form game with NSW batting coach Beau Casson – an approach that may yet earn him a test debut this week.

The only path for test hopefuls this summer appeared to be the hit and giggle BBL with the Sheffield Shield on hiatus.

Yet Patterson is in line to make his baggy green debut in the pink ball Gabba clash with Sri Lanka from Thursday after honing his technique with Casson backed by a NSW Premier Cricket stint with club St George.

Mid Canterbury Tennis coach Andre van Rooyen is hoping that their summer camp will help in bolstering and continuing to grow the tennis playing ranks in the region.

The camp began yesterday, is running all week and has taken on board more than 50 young tennis players aged from four to 16.

“To make sure we are able to deliver a good package we have even had to bring on extra coaches,” van Rooyen said.

The coaches are a collection of some of the youngest A-grade interclub players, which allows van Rooyen to spread his time between the different groups to teach and get to know each student.

“It also ensures I can keep training the other coaches and then all

the students can have access to me and it helps me to get to know them and I can coach directly as well,” he said.

The camp comes with a big emphasis on serving, something van Rooyen says is helpful when they transition to junior interclub, an area of competition that is on the rise.

“This time last year we had 19 or 20 teams and now we are heading in to the start of interclub again

this weekend and there are 25 teams down to play,” he said.

“To get five extra teams in that junior interclub competition is amazing and I am so driven to keep building that base through these camps and the schools’ programmes to grow the nursery of young players.”

While the camp is currently held in Ashburton, it is open to youngsters all over the district, with potential in the future for

camps to be held not just at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

“We held a camp in Tinwald two years ago and there were no junior teams out there, and now we have two playing in the interclub,” he said.

“The coaches probably aren’t ready yet, but if they have their drivers licence there is no reason to say that we can’t host camps out in Mt Somers or out in Rakaia.”
