Firefighters are urging people to check the conditions before they light fires after spending several hours battling one in the Cavendish area between Mayfield and Mt Somers on Sunday night. The fire, which spread through ember transfer from a fire lit by a farmer, required five engines, four tankers and a helicopter to contain.
Firefighters were called just before 5pm, and the first was contained just before 8pm. “It is the biggest one for the summer so far,” rural fire officer Don Geddes said. “It is a really good lesson for people to check the conditions before they go lighting matches. “Check the conditions and think, ‘if I light this and the wind is blowing that way and there is ember transfer it could
