Mid Canterbury swimmers were furious yesterday when EA Networks Centre’s pool closed due to “unsafe temperatures”. The Ashburton District Council shut the $30 million plus facility, opened in 2015, at 3pm when temperatures inside soared to 31 degrees. Would-be swimmers were literally left out in the heat on a hot summer’s day, as Ashburton temperatures climbed to 32 degrees. Service delivery group manager Neil McCann apologised for any inconvenience. “We simply can’t risk the safety of the
public and our staff,” McCann said. The council was to open the Tinwald pool early to offer an option, and reported one dozen people there by 3.45pm. Swimmers leaving EA Networks when it closed reported having seen lifeguards with ice packs clutched to their necks in order to stay cool. Among those turning up for a swim after closure were Courtney Leov of Ashburton, with her Nelson friend Bronwyn Sutton. “None of the pools in Nelson close because it’s too hot,” Sutton said. Leov could not understand why the council had spent so much on the facility, yet failed to install a cooling system.
“I normally come here because the Tinwald Pool isn’t sheltered enough,” she said. Another swimmer desperate to cool off in the heat was Heather Broomhall, who had driven all the way from Rakaia. “It’s a long way to come to get turned down,” she said. Visiting school groups were fortunate the closure was after school hours. The council let those who usually attended after-school Learn to Swim classes know through email and phone about the closure earlier in the day. EA Networks management currently have a request before council to have cooling units installed, which could cost $400,000.
