The trial of the man accused of murdering two women and attempting to murder two others at the Ashburton Work and Income office will begin in the High Court in Christchurch this morning. Russell John Tully is accused of fatally shooting Peggy Turuhira Noble, aged 67 at the time, and Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, on September 1, 2014. He is further accused of the attempted murder of Lindy Louise Curtis, who was shot in the leg, and Kim Elizabeth Adams, who was allegedly fired at as she fled the building. All four women were employed by Work and Income New Zealand. Tully is also charged with illegally pos-
sessing firearms and ammunition, setting a mantrap with intent to injure and theft. Following an intensive manhunt involving more than 100 police officers and members of the special tactics unit, a farmer checking stock in the Wheatstone district, near Lake Hood, alerted police to an armed man pushing a bicycle across a paddock. Tully was subsequently arrested and taken into custody some seven hours after the shootings. He appeared in the Christchurch District Court the following morning, where he was initially charged with two counts of murder and one of attempted murder. The remaining charges were laid during subsequent appearances in the High
Court. Tully has continued to deny all charges, and has been remanded in custody since his arrest. The trial was initially due to start in November, but was adjourned. In a written decision, Justice Cameron Mander set down today’s dates, stating the reason for the adjournment was to “accommodate Mr Tully’s legal representation at the trial”. All further details were suppressed. Justice Mander will preside over Tully’s trial, which is expected to take up to three weeks. At the time of the alleged offending Tully, then aged 48, was understood to have been homeless and living rough in the Ashburton riverbed.
