Labour’s planned water tax on irrigation will lead to more corporate farmers and foreign investors, says Mid Canterbury farmer Steven Bierema. The cropping farmer says the tax is an unfair cost that many other commercial water users do not pay and will make it harder for small farmers to make a living off the land. Bierema says many farmers, at least in Mid Canterbury, are already making huge environmental gains and whoever is in government after September 23 would be better speeding up the process

for others to do the same. The family emigrated from Holland in 2004 and bought a rundown farm with a water consent on Thompsons Track. Bierema put down two deep wells and bought a centre pivot and two linear irrigators; he also has shares in the Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation Scheme, which uses water from the Rangitata River. Bierema says irrigation droughtproofs the property and allows him to grow wheat, barley, grass seed, bok choi and clover, and run lambs. It means his seed merchant can guarantee a sale to customers on the other side of the world and it means he can buy

Don’t get

a new tractor from the dealer in town. “Water has made farms in this district resilient and it started in the 1980s when things weren’t so good for farmers.” The collective water tax on farmers in Mid Canterbury, if Labour is elected, will mean $40 million is lost from the economy. Bierema says imposing a hefty tax bill on a select group of farmers is a bad decision and will stop the momentum of farmers already making changes.
