Strong winds force chairlift evacuation Clean sweep for Mid Canty P18

About 160 skiers and snowboarders had to be evacuated from a chairlift on Mt Hutt skifield yesterday after a problem with one of the chairs ground the lift to a halt.

Mountain manager James McKenzie said there were strong winds on the skifield yesterday and the summit six chairlift was full when the lift was stopped by a stuck chair about midday.

Guests had to be lowered to the ground individually by staff using a static line, the entire process taking two hours.

He said staff skied the chairlift line at-

tending to children and elderly skiers first, then worked their way along the chairs evacuating other skiers and snowboarders. “There were very strong winds so some cold people.”

The chairlift stayed on hold for the remainder of the day while staff worked on the problem.

Skiers and snowboarders used the quad chairlift to take advantage of some good conditions on the mountain until it too was put on hold because of wind.

McKenzie said the skifield had had a bumper few days and guests had been

making the most of fine weather and great snow over the past few days.

The Polish national ski team has been training on the mountain and skifield staff were preparing for several big events in the next few weeks.

Mt Hutt will host some of the best young skiers in the country when the third race of the New Zealand Youth series comes to the mountain for three days from this Friday.

It will also host the FIS Australia and New Zealand Cup and NZ national championships in early September.

Scammers target donations The Cancer Society is warning Mid Canterbury people to be wary of scammers posing as Daffodil Day collectors asking for credit card details over the phone in an effort to obtain money.

The Cancer Society is preparing for Daffodil Day on Friday and was contacted by an expatient of the society who was called by a woman claiming to be a collector for the charity asking for a donation.

The caller talked about her own recent diagnosis and illhealth before asking for credit card details from the 92-year-old Kapiti Coast resident. No details were given, and the patient called the charity immediately to notify them of the incident.

“We are relieved the scam was

unsuccessful and the phone call was able to be stalled before any details were handed over. We believe this person is just using Daffodil Day to randomly approach people for donations using the phone book,” volunteering manager Tracey Harris of the Cancer Society Wellington division said.

The Cancer Society provide a number of official ways for people to donate to the charity’s national appeal.

These include donating directly with a street collector with an official bucket and bib, through the ANZ bank – including their branch, apps and website - by texting 469 to instantly donate $3, or online at daffodilday.org. nz.

The Cancer Society of New

Zealand CEO Claire Austin said it was concerning and urged people around the country to be careful when cold-called about donations.

“It’s a shame that these people are using our organisation to target vulnerable people ahead of our national fundraiser,” she said.

“I’m relieved that no money or bank details were handed over and we commend this person for coming forward and notifying us immediately. We would never ask for credit card details over the phone. If you are contacted by someone asking you for a donation in this way, report it immediately to your local Cancer Society.”

flagship event Daffodil Day – one of the most important fundraising and cancer awareness events – is this Friday and collectors will be an official stalls along East Street and in other parts of the town.

Volunteers will today be delivering bunches of freshly-picked daffodils to Mid Canterbury business who are making donations to the cause.

Now in its 26th year, Daffodil Day raises awareness of cancer and is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society.

The daffodil is one of the first flowers of the spring season and with its bright yellow bloom represents hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer each year.

■ MILL CREEK PONY CLUB

Young riders test their skills at pony club event The next Mark Todd could have been in action at the Mill Creek Pony Club yesterday.

The club held its annual dressage, jumping and derby day for beginners, with around 40 riders taking part.

Rally co-ordinator Susan Harvey said the club’s grounds at Trevors Road were ideal for beginner equestrians with riders ranging in age from six years to “around 50”.

She said skills learned at pony club could take riders to the Olympic Games, as evidenced by the likes of Canterbury equestrian Tim Price who rode at Rio alongside Mark Todd. Both had ridden up through the pony club ranks.

She said a French rider at the Rio games had also ridden a horse he had brought up through the pony club system.

Pony club was the grassroots of the sport and beginner days like Mill Creek’s were important to teach skills and competition etiquette, as well as have some fun.

Body found A woman’s body has been found in the water at a North Shore beach.

Police were called to Browns Bay at about 7.30am yesterday after a member of the public discovered the dead woman. The body has been retrieved from the water since and the death is being investigated.

Trial to start A man accused of smuggling more than a dozen people into the country is due to stand trial. Feroz Ali has pleaded not guilty to people trafficking and exploitation charges and his trial starts at the High Court in Auckland today. Ali was originally charged in the Manukau District Court, where it was alleged he helped 16 people into the country unlawfully, charging them money for the opportunity to work in New Zealand. It’s alleged the migrants were subjected to exploitative working conditions. He is a Fijian national who holds New Zealand residency.

Man shot in back A man has been shot in the back and another has been injured in the arm at a party in Auckland.

It happened in Panmure, just before 12.30am yesterday. Senior Sergeant Gary Barber says a group of people who had left a party in Kay Road got involved in a dispute with another group, on Tripoli Road. During that fight a vehicle arrived, and people inside presented a gun ... resulting in a man sustaining shotgun pellet injuries to his back. Two men have been taken to Auckland City Hospital but their injuries are not life-threatening.

A 52-year-old man charged with the murder of John Murray Morton, whose body was found in a boat near Nelson on August 4, is due to appear in court. The man, who is a local and was known to Mr Morton, was arrested and charged during the weekend. He will appear in the Nelson District Court today.

Mr Morton, 55, of Nelson, known as “Muzza”, was found dead in the back of a white boat moored in Nelson Haven, opposite the skate park on QE II Drive.

Know the signs of meningitis

Meningitis can kill within hours, so it’s important to know the symptoms.

It is the inflammation of membrane lining of the brain and spinal cord viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other micro-organisms, like parasites.

The two most common types are meningococcal disease and pneumococcal meningitis.

In New Zealand there are vari-

ous strains of meningococcal meningitis, but the two most common strains in this country are B and C. There is no vaccine for the B strain so it is very important people know the signs.

Mid Canterbury GP spokesperson Dr Mick Tarry, said there are a range of symptoms and can rapidly progress.

In suspected meningitis/ meningococcal disease, in adults and children, symptoms can be a

high fever, vomiting, a headache, photo sensitivity, neck pain or stiffness.

There can also be confusion, leg pain, cold hands and feet, abnormal skin colour and a rash.

In infants there may be additional symptoms like poor feeding or not waking for feeds, irritability or high-pitched crying, neck retraction and back arching and a fever with cool peripheries.

Kiwis ready to plough New Zealand ploughmen are the first competitors in the world ploughing champs in York, England, to arrive at the official practice before the event.

barracks in the army, are encouraged to get the Menactra vaccine to protect against meningococcal ACW135 and Y. Tarry said the vaccine for haemophilus influenza B has been part of the immunisation schedule for the past 20 years and haemophilus meningitis is unheard of in immunised children.

There is also the pneumococcal vaccination, which is part of the immunisation schedule and protects against several strains.

Ashburton’s annual booklovers’ fair is just around the corner and already members of Ashburton Rotary are checking, stacking and sorting thousands of books ready for the week-long event.

Bookarama, to be held on September 26, is an Ashburton institution, and this year celebrates 37 years of business, but while the event is held just once a year, for the organising team of Rotarians, it never really ends.

When the doors close on the final day of the giant book sale, Rotarians spend countless hours sorting out leftover stock. Some is packed away for the next sale, the rest is sent to recycling.

And while no one likes tossing out books, this year’s Bookarama co-ordinator David Mead said it was important to keep the quality of books offered at a good standard.

The quality of new books coming in each year, however was

generally very good, the recycling bin was only for those that had seen a few sales and had become a bit tatty around the edges, he said.

Currently the Rotary team is spending a few hours each day resorting and repacking last year’s books along with the steady stream of new donations that is starting to come in.

They know they’ll be stepping up the pace as opening day gets closer.

To make it easier for people to donate books, the Bookarama collection boxes will be placed in 10 spots around the district early next week.

These are emptied regularly by Rotarians and the books will this year go through their pre-sale sorting in the Peter Cates building on West Street. There is also a green shed on this site where books can be left.

Last year Bookarama raised about $60,000. This money is given to local charities.

Gastro outbreak easing Numbers of people struck down by gastro illness in the Hawke’s Bay is declining.

However, Dr William Rainger Acting Medical Officer of Health for Hawke’s Bay District Health Board says that although the numbers of people seen by general practice and in hospital is going down, people still need to continue to be vigilant with their hand hygiene.

It is estimated that more than 4000 people in Havelock North have suffered vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches, muscle pain and fever from drinking the town’s water when it was contaminated with campylobacter bacteria.

The DHB said on Saturday interim results from the Institute of Environmental Science and Re-

search suggests contamination from cattle and other four-legged farm animals may have been in the water.

As of yesterday the district health board had 153 confirmed notifications of campylobacter and 356 probable making a total of 509.

“All the evidence we are seeing, since the water was chlorinated, is that outbreak is waning and there is no evidence of a second wave,” Rainger says.

Hospitalisations to Hawke’s Bay Hospital are currently sitting at seven in general wards and there are no patients in Intensive Care.

There were two presentations to the Emergency Department of people with gastro illness overnight.

GPs saw about 30 patients yesterday and for St John it was business as usual.

The boil water notice remains in place for Havelock North only, he says.

Aged Residential Care is reporting that their numbers were also decreasing, however there are anecdotal reports of a few in aged residential care where their symptoms have returned.

GPs also remind women that diarrhoea increases the risk of the contraceptive pill failing so they need to take extra contraception to prevent them getting pregnant if they have diarrhoea.

People with underlying medical conditions and older people may have the illness for longer and therefore there could be a recurrence of symptoms.

Rainger says there are two illnesses which can be associated with campylobacter.

Reactive Arthritis was one and while it was painful and affected more than one joint it would usually respond well to anti-inflammatories and treatment from a GP. The other, which is rare, is Guillain Barre syndrome a neurological condition which hospital specialists are all trained and well equipped to treat should it arise. Information and reminders to be on the watch for these two illnesses has been sent to health professionals in Hawke’s Bay. He urges people that aren’t getting better or are feeling worse to see their doctor or call Healthline 0800 611 116.

Newcomers’ network connecting communities

With Ashburton’s migrant population on the rise, the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network is hoping to build on one of their existing meet-up groups.

Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network’s co-ordinator, Sophie-Claire Violette, said the coffee meet-up group, which runs on every other Wednesday, is the perfect opportunity for those new to Ashburton to meet.

Violette said she hopes to start a meet-up group in the evenings as well, to accommodate those who are working during the day or those who want to bring their partner.

The Wednesday coffee meet-up is organised by one of the newcomers’ network’s volunteers, Iris Van Asperen, who said she had been volunteering at the Newcomers’ Network for about three years.

“I moved to Ashburton when I was 15 and I consider myself part of the furniture now.

“I have such a heart for supporting and looking after people,” she said.

Violette has been in the co-ordinator role for about a month and said it gives her the opportunity to create groups of community.

In brief Rain on its way The sunny, calm and settled weather that has prevailed for the past week is on its way out, says the MetService. In its place will be a series of systems rolling in from the Tasman Sea, bringing wetter and windier conditions.

Long periods of rain are expected in the west of both islands, with the heaviest falls at the end of the week. “Despite the increasing rainfall there will some breaks of sunshine,” said meteorologist Tom Adams. “With maximum temperatures for many places up in the mid-teens there will be a good few moments to feel like spring is on the way.”

The group aims to educate people on what Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome is and also introduce a new prevention initiative. The preventable condition can be caused by taking anti-epileptic drugs while pregnant. Timaru house fire One person suffered burns when a fire broke out at the back of their Timaru house early yesterday.

A Fire Service spokesman said they were called to the Church Street property at 5.50am. The back of the house and a sleepout were well involved when the Fire Service arrived. The person was alerted to the fire by their smoke alarms. They were taken to Timaru Hospital by St John Ambulance.

No other persons were in the house when the fire broke out, the Fire Service spokesman said.

■ GOT A TRADE WEEK

Bid to address skill shortage Mid Canterbury secondary school students are being encouraged to learn a skill like plumbing, building or car mechanics with a major shortage of those and other trade skills being predicted in four years.

A national campaign Got a Trade Week begins today to raise awareness of careers that exist in 140 trades and services around the country.

Got a Trade Week spokesman Andrew Robertson says New Zealand’s skill shortage is real and needs to be urgently addressed if the economy is to keep buoyant into the future.

With only one in four school leavers go-

ing on to university, the trade week was about showcasing opportunities to the rest, he said.

Building and construction will need 64,000 new people by 2020, manufacturing will need 40,000 and the retail supply chain sector will need 107,000, according to Robertson.

“The national campaign will promote New Zealand’s need for more skilled people in trades and services.

“According to 2015 Immigration NZ data, one-third of the occupations on the longterm skills shortage list are trades and services. There is a worrying trend of major

shortfalls being predicted and by 2020 there will be high demand for employment created by industry growth and replacement demand across all sectors.

“There are genuine and exciting career opportunities in over 140 trades and services for young people who are willing to ‘earn and learn’.”

Robertson said school leavers and their parents could visit gotatrade.co.nz and take a look at viable career paths offered in the trades.

Trade week is designed to speak to school leavers, as well as parents and teachers.

Trades and services typically refer to jobs

that require practical skills and on-the-job training.

This includes everything from construction, engineering and transport, to hairdressing, hospitality, aged care workers and retail.

Robertson said there were hundreds of roles to choose from and long-term career prospects for young people who are keen to work and willing to learn.

“We all need to work together - in the home and in the classroom - to steer our kids in the direction of real job opportunities and to ensure New Zealand’s industries can survive.”

Rehearsals in full swing

As the Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre rehearsals for Cinderella and Xanadu hit the half way mark, the production team are pleased with their progress.

The two shows have a combined cast of 90 Mid Canterbury performers, and will be double-billed at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on performance days.

Director Cherie Livingstone said the two casts have been taking the opportunity to learn from each other.

“It’s not age dependent either, some of the older kids have never been on stage and are picking some things up from the younger kids,” she said.

Livingstone also said the casts are expected to learn their scripts and, for the senior performers in Xanadu, the harmony.

“In Xanadu, the musical director, Jo Castelow, has included three and four-part harmonies which the kids are expected to learn.”

Livingstone said they try to keep weeknight rehearsals shorter, especially for the senior performers, who have had mock exam week.

Castelow said she is thrilled with the “tremendous singing” both casts have been displaying.

Livingstone said that when the performance dates come closer, the parents will be helping out behind the scenes as well.

Cinderella and Xanadu will be at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at 7pm on September 30, 2pm and 7pm on October 1 and 2pm on October 2.

1926 Austin 12/4 Clifton

An unusual name links David Oakley to his 1926 Austin 12/4 Clifton.

David’s father’s second name is Clifton and David said this connection was one of the many reasons he loves the Austin.

The Austin 12/4 Clifton was manufactured in Longbridge, England in 1926 by the Austin Motor Company and a manual has a four cylinder engine and a manual gearbox with a cruising speed of about 65km/h.

One of the other unique features on the Austin 12/4 is the steering throttle, which instead of saying petrol or accelerate, has gas written on it, this was inspired by the founder of the Austin Motor Company’s visit to America in 1917.

David has painted his Clifton to resemble the titular character in the children’s book series Gumdrop, which was written and illustrated by Val Biro.

Gumdrop is an Austin 12/4 which is painted bright blue

with dark blue accents.

David bought his Austin in 2008 with not much left but the bones of the car to work with.

It took him two years to restore the car to its former glory and the driving force for this repair was a cross-country drive in Australia.

David said one of the best features of the car is the reliability of the engine, which, he said, made the cross-country trip easier.

“It was a bit of a rushed job but I got it done just in time to get the car shipped over to Perth,” he said.

David’s wife Marion also has an interest in vintage cars and won a smaller Austin car in a raffle a few years ago.

“We love driving around in them, but we try to stay in the back country as much as possible, so we don’t hold up traffic,” David said.

The next trip David is hoping to take his Austin 12/4 on is a North Island tour in 2018 and he said the cars going may reach 50km/h if they are lucky.

Luck brings Basement back

In the early eighties a boy band formed at Geraldine High School Nothing untoward about that, however Basement hit the ground with unique beats and lyrics which launched the careers of two of the greats of Kiwi music and a sound which would reverberate down the generations in the form of the Exponents and The Jordan Luck Band.

For those who were there at the beginning and those swept along with the songs, Jordan Luck and Brian Jones are reuniting with their former band members to shake up the South Canterbury pub scene in a five gig tour in October.

The Basement boys came together in 1976 with Canadianborn Luck at the helm, Goose (Gary) Bruce, Miles Richardson and Michael Jones. The lads were all in the fifth form at the time.

Bruce was later replaced by

Timaru-born Brian Jones and Michael’s older brother Steve joined the band in 1981, enabling Luck to focus on vocals.

Steve recalls practice sessions on the Luck family’s verandah and in a farm shed on the Richardson property. The band had a post-punk/new wave sound and played a mix of originals and covers, drawing inspiration from bands like the Ramones, Boomtown Rats, The Jam and the Stranglers.

In its heyday Basement packed out local pubs and country halls and were regulars at Methven’s Blue Pub until, as the result of an incident involving the trashing of a hotel room, several band members were run out of town!

As 1981 drew to a close Luck enrolled at Canterbury University, and Brian Jones made the decision to turn professional and they both headed for Christchurch where they established Dance Exponents, later to be-

come the Exponents.

A series of hits followed, notably Victoria, Why Does Love Do This to Me, Who Loves Who the Most and I’ll Say Goodbye. Some of the lyrics in Luck’s now famous repertoire were forged in the Basement camp.

The rest of the Basement crew drifted off to follow their own paths. Michael put his drums away, finished his butchery apprenticeship and still run’s Geraldine’s only butcher’s shop. Steve has kept his guitar close at hand and now works as a painter decorator.

While the boys didn’t make a lot of cash, they had a lot of fun and a bond was forged which would stand the test of time.

Steve followed up Brian’s induction into the Music Hall of Fame last year with a phone call to Luck.

For a couple of decades the Basement boys had talked about a reunion but the timing was

never right, he said.

However the stars have aligned and the band, with the exception of Richardson, will get together to play for the first time in more than 30 years.

Joining them on stage will be former Geraldine drummer Chris Pearson, who learned his craft under Michael’s guidance.

A slice of rock and roll history will be recreated when Basement (Mach II) takes to the stage to play the band’s five original songs including those later recorded by the Exponents and a range of Kiwi classics.

The mini pub tour will start with two free warm-up gigs at Geraldine’s Crown Hotel on October 18 and 19, followed by ticketed performances at the Sail and Anchor in Timaru on October 21 then back to Geraldine to play at the Village Inn on October 22 and 23.

The burkini is just a piece of material Sue Newman

he French, quite frankly have gone too far.

They’ve banned a style of swimwear they say has the potential to create riots.

They believe that by allowing women to wear body and head covering swimsuits, they’re opening the door for other beach users to show their anti-Muslim feelings.

Yes, the world is on high alert now in terms of terrorism, but it’s a giant leap to link terrorism to women wearing burkini, playing with their children in the water.

The burkini allows women who could not otherwise swim, enjoy something we all take for granted.

If other swimmers can’t deal with that they need to take a long, hard look at themselves.

Ask any Kiwi who has spent time on European beaches and they’ll tell you there are far worse things to look at than a burkiniclad swimmer.

On any beach you’ll find hundreds of near naked women with whale-like bodies, happily rolling round in the surf. No one bats an eye – except the conservative Kiwi.

For my money I’d far rather be beach side with burkini wearers than near-naked beached whales.

The burkini is just one more swimwear option. If one piece bathing suits were banned, or if bikini bottoms alone were the only acceptable swimwear, sand and surf would probably be off limits to millions.

It’s the same deal, it’s about choice.

Not everyone feels comfortable letting it all hang out for others to see and the imperfect among us need to have choice too. The burkini is one of those choices and manufacturers of the garment say it’s becoming increasingly popular with nonMuslims who prefer to cover up to swim.

Their reasons could be modesty or they could be protection against the sun. Apparently these women are about 45 per cent of the market.

In real terms someone wearing a rash top and long bottom and a large sunhat is not too different to to someone wearing a burkini.

Banning the burkini is taking a huge step back in time in gender equality and freedom of choice.

By any name it’s discrimination.

It’s just another swimsuit style, for heavens sake. It’s a piece of material that’s become a political item.

2. Present at the Ashburton Citizens’ Association meeting on Thursday were seven prospective councillors, some of them sitting councillors, some of them there for the first time, one of them the council representative at the meeting.

I use the ‘independent’ tag intentionally, and there is no group of potential councillors lining up behind an ACA banner, as suggested in the Guardian on August 20. ACA has a watchdog brief, and as such is a rich source of public opinion.

I’d urge all interested residents to attend their meetings on the third Thursday of each month.

Making our courts more accessible to all A

s the Minister responsible for Justice and the Courts, I want to promote initiatives which ensure the court process is as easy and accessible as possible for everyone.

One such new initiative is the introduction of video-conferencing to enable judges to appear virtually in remote courts.

This initiative, which currently involves Family Court judges in Northland and Southland/ Central Otago, aims to reduce the number of judges and court users travelling to remote locations for short fixtures and to reduce delays, such as those caused by poor weather.

Recent upgrades to video conferencing technology offer the ability to provide a more reliable and cost-effective service nationwide. Smarter use of this available technology means we can provide better access to justice and reduce delays for court users, especially those outside the metropolitan areas.

There is the potential for benefits nationwide from a growth in video conferencing initiatives, with more than 4500 procedural events held in our more remote courts over the past 12 months requiring a judge or parties to travel to a remote site.

Services provided to court users, including victims, need to be faster and more consistent, and to do this we have to rely less on paper and buildings.

This initiative demonstrates that both the Ministry of Justice and the judiciary are looking at ways to make use of the latest technology to make our courts more efficient across New Zealand.

Another great initiative by local judges and staff has involved the creation of a child-friendly space for children giving evidence in the Whangarei courthouse.

Going to court can be a scary and stressful time for vulnerable child witnesses. While it is common for children to give evidence via closed circuit TV rather than in a courtroom, Whangarei has gone one step further and created a relaxed, child-friendly environment to help ease the trauma of appearing in court.

ing equipment. After taking the advice of a local expert on how to create a relaxing environment, colour, couches and cushions now signal that this is a place for children. Old board games have been updated and an X-box and TV sit alongside toys and books provided courtesy of fundraising and donations from the local community and businesses.

Judges and counsel visit the room to meet children in person before their appearance via CCTV. Another initiative that has helped to put child witnesses at ease is the presence of Louie, New Zealand’s first court dog. Louie is an eight-yearold labrador who works at Tauranga District Court, helping to calm young people waiting to give evidence. Early reports indicate that his presence has an amazing impact on child witnesses at an incredibly difficult time for them.

While these may sound like small things, for child witnesses they can make a big difference.

Brother dies of wounds The older brother of the Syrian boy whose image, dazed and bloodied after an air strike, shocked people around the world, has died in Aleppo from wounds sustained in the same incident, a war monitor and a witness say.

Ali Daqneesh, 10, was wounded in last week’s air strike, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, and a witness who was present at the time of the death along with the boys’ father.

He had internal bleeding and organ damage, doctors told the witness.

His younger brother, five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, was pictured in the back of an ambulance after being pulled from the rubble, with an expression of incomprehension on his dust and blood-caked face.

The video and pictures were widely cir-

culated online and in the media, refocusing public opinion on Syria’s five-year-old civil war and the plight of civilians.

Russian and Syrian warplanes have intensified their air strikes on the rebel-held east of the city since insurgents made an advance last month, breaking an effective siege.

Fighting and air strikes in and around Aleppo has killed 448 civilians so far this month, the Observatory said.

Rebels, supported by the United States, Turkey and Gulf Arab nations, have been fighting since 2011 to oust President Bashar al-Assad, who is supported by Russia and Iran. Russia began air strikes last September.

On Friday, the World Food Program described the situation in besieged areas as “nightmarish” amid growing international concern over the humanitarian cost of the war in Syria.

London celebrates Tube night services

Hundreds of Londoners and tourists have inaugurated the first night services of the London Underground on its Central and Victoria lines.

The start of the 24-hour weekend service was scheduled for September 2015 at the hands of then mayor and now foreign minister, Boris Johnson.

However, failures to agree on wage and working conditions for employees resulted in several strikes of network personnel and the postponement of the plan.

Greater police presence was also detected on Tube platforms with 100 additional officers deployed at the weekend.

An officer said the force was prepared “to deal with drunk people” but added that so far there had been no such incident.

Even so, alcohol did make an appearance on the morning of the inauguration.

“It is fantastic to have had the chance to take one more drink and not have the metro closed,” a happy Adam Smith said.

However, not everyone shared his enthusiasm.

Many taxi drivers in the city have not welcomed the recent development, as a 24-hour Tube service will affect their business.

London Underground - manager of the city’s metro network - estimates that 200,000 users will use the night metro every weekend, once all five routes are running.

American Idol is receiving the TV academy’s 2016 Governors Award for its impact on television. The academy said the Fox singing contest was more than a hit, citing its use of social media, influence on the pop-culture conversation and the talent-show imitators it spawned. The Governors Award honours achievement that goes beyond the scope of Emmy Award recognition. American Idol, which has ended its 15-year run, was a ratings blockbuster but never captured top Emmy honours in the reality-competition program category. It isn’t up for the award at the September 18 Emmys airing on ABC, but host Ryan Seacrest has a final chance to be honoured as best reality series host.

New album for Ocean The wait for Frank Ocean’s latest album is finally over. The singer’s 17-track album Blonde was released at the weekend on Apple Music, one day after the R&B singer released a 45-minute “visual album” on the streaming service. Blonde is Ocean’s second studio album and is his follow-up to his successful 2012 debut album Channel Orange. That album featured the hit song Thinkin Bout You and earned him two Grammy Awards, including best urban contemporary album.

Family defends mum accused of Bali murder An Australian suspected of murdering a Bali policeman is a loving mother and the claims she’s facing are at odds with her character, her family says.

Byron Bay mother-of-two Sara Connor and her British boyfriend David James Taylor have been named as suspects in the death of local police officer Wayan Sudarsa, whose bloodied body was found on a Kuta beach last week.

His face was battered and the remains of a beer bottle were found near his head.

The pair remain in custody for further questioning and face three alternate charges: murder, manslaughter and assault causing death.

Murder convictions could see them jailed for 15 years.

The Australian woman’s shocked family has issued a statement in her defence, saying the 45-year-old is a good mother who loves her two boys, 9 and 11, more than anything.

“The accusations laid against her are totally out of character for this beautiful person,” the family said in a statement.

“Her love for her boys is the biggest love in her life. She is very passionate about life and exudes enthusiasm wherever she goes.”

The pair has already returned to the beach with police to describe what happened on the night the officer died.

Ms Connor and Mr Taylor have also been subjected to forensic examinations, and the Australian mother has been to hospital

for an examination of leg wounds she said she suffered on the night the officer died.

Ms Connor’s lawyer Erwin Siregar, who also represented convicted Bali drug mule Schapelle Corby, has told reporters Ms Connor has signed a document allowing her detention for the next 20 days, but that can be extended to 100 days.

He says his client and Mr Taylor had been at a restaurant drinking beer before going to the beach together on Wednesday night.

But he said Ms Connor was not drunk, and there was no suggestion of drugs being involved.

Mr Sudarsa’s family was expected to cremate his remains yesterday.

Walking on glass The world’s highest and longest glass bridge has opened to visitors in central China. The 430-metre long, 6-metre wide glass-bottomed walkway hangs 300 metres above a canyon in the Tianmenshan National Forest Park in Hunan province, central China. By June 2017, visitors will also be able to hang from the overpass on three massive swings or bungee jump off the side, Zhangjiajie Canyon Tourism Management Company vice general manager Joe Chen told the design blog Inhabitat. Composed of 99 panes of three-layer transparent glass, the bridge has set 10 world records for design and construction, the management committee said. A maximum 8000 visitors are allowed to cross every day. Reservations must be made a day in advance.

Turning up the heat in Helsinki

Newly opened to the public this year is Vallisaari Island, once occupied by Russia and later used as a military base, it’s now a nature refuge.

F

or a population so adeptly conditioned to cold weather, Finns are surprisingly good at taking the heat.

Tossing a large ladle of water over hot coals, a glistening, tattooed Nordic grins gleefully as our dark, charcoal-stained smoke sauna transforms into an angry furnace.

As steam singes my nostrils and beads of sweat form rivulets in every fleshy fold, I bolt for the door and wonder if Brit basting is all part of the entertainment.

There are 3.3 million saunas in Finland, more than one for every other person, but the majority are private. Helsinki’s new Loyly (a term used to describe the steam that rises when you throw water on the sauna’s rocks) represents a return to public, social spaces.

The wooden, steep sloped structure, with a seaside bar terrace and open-air rooftop lounge, is also part of the Helsinki’s drive to embrace outdoor spaces and bask in the long, warm days of the short but sweet summers.

Elsewhere, a car park has been transformed into a pool complex and a new law has been passed allowing businesses to turn parking spaces outside buildings

Subsequently, an apparently quiet capital is now outwardly effervescing with life.

Thankfully, I prevent my own blood bubbling so vigorously by retreating to Loyly’s second, more sedate sauna, where horizontal pine slats act like Venetian blinds, revealing near naked bodies descending a step ladder into the sea.

Closer to town, next to the port and fried fish stalls of Market Square, the Helsinki Allas Pool is due to fully open later this month.

Locals and tourists are already making use of the dockside terrace, where filtered salt and fresh water swimming pools will be suspended in the harbour next to segregated saunas. The idea for the complex, previously a tarmac car park, was first touted 10 years ago and has been partly financed by crowdfunding.

putting, the central location will no doubt prove popular, and owners plan to have a reserve of rentable swimwear for spontaneous sauna goers.

Along with cruise ships, sightseeing ferries servicing Helsinki’s archipelago also leave from the port. Newly opened to the public this year is Vallisaari island, a 20-minute journey away.

Once occupied by Russia and later used as a military base, it’s now a nature refuge. I follow gently rising trails to lookout points and watch sailing boats weave through islands, etching spirals on a duck egg blue watery canvas.

Strict regulations govern Vallisaari, which is off limits from 10pm to 6am, although there is talk of opening a Tentsile hotel on the island next year.

The gravity defying, Britishmade Tentsile Tree Tents, which appear to levitate above ground and are suspended between three trees, have developed a cult following in Finland, and adventure

tour companies use them in nearby Nuuksio National Park.

Dominated by forest-covered valleys and deep rocky gorges, the park, which is a 45-minute drive from Helsinki, is busy with campers on a hot weekend in July.

According to the traditional Finnish legal concept of Everyman’s Right, general public have the right to roam freely through wilderness areas. Only campfire sites are restricted, although stores of free firewood make them appealingly convenient to use.

We hike alongside sparkling, tree-lined lakes filled with lilies, clambering over moss-covered granite boulders in the dark forest canopy, as shards of light skip across glistening red toadstools.

“The elves have been playing here,” laughs my guide Miki from Arctos Adventures, pointing to the disorderly mass of strewn stones.

Using thick pads to protect

the trees, Miki sets up our tents next to the bathwater-warm Lake Kolmoislampi, while I wander off in search of blueberries.

“It’s very Finnish to explore the forest alone and have an internal dialogue,” explains Miki, and I enjoy every meditative minute of picking plump berries and staining my fingers purple in the process.

By midnight, it’s still not completely dark. This is, after all, a Scandi summer.

Above me, wisps of treetops form charcoal scribbles in the sky, and in the distance I hear skinny dippers squeal as they splash in the lake.

Climbing into the Tentsile requires a big heave and a belly flop, but once inside, it’s like sleeping in a spacious, supportive hammock. Air coolly circulates around my body and there are no irritating pinecones digging into my back.

But it’s not just the freedom of movement that lulls me to sleep.

Out here, surrounded by trees and toadstools, anything is possible. By nurturing nature on their doorstep, Helsinki’s city dwellers have struck upon a truly fine way to live.

In brief Paddon into fifth Kiwi rally drivers Hayden Paddon and John Kennard have battled mixed conditions in the WRC Germany to finish the second day in fifth position. The pair completed a five-stage leg yesterday, rounding out the day’s stages in eighth position and almost two minutes off leader Andres Mikkelsen. In the overall world rally rankings, the result takes Paddon and Kennard to fifth place, almost three minutes behind fourth. “Hopefully to bring home a top-five result is good in terms of points and a result, but in terms of outright performance and driving, we still need to work a lot on this,” Paddon said.

Ashburton tops on court A strong Ashburton side was victorious in the Division 1 section of the Mid Canterbury Squash interclub final, played at the Collegiate courts on Friday night.

Going into the finals night Ashburton had dominated the season, picking up 190 points while Pleasant Point made the final with 149 points.

Collegiate and Celtic filled the minor positions, but it was all Ashburton this year, and the Di-

vision 1 pennant will undoubtedly now be hanging on the wall at their Harrison Street courts.

In Division 2 it was always a tight race between the two Methven sides, and while Methven 1 did marginally better over the season, scoring 189 points to Methven’s 184, in finals squash it’s on the night that counts, and the Methven 1 team had to bow to their clubmates.

Temuka and Hinds were the

best of the rest in that division.

Collegiate went into the Division 3 final as slight favourites after topping the polls after the previous 18 weeks of competition squash, but as usual in that sector of the tournament it was fiercely competitive throughout, with Pleasant Point, Methven and Celtic all well within sight of the gold with a couple of weeks to play.

But on their home ground

Collegiate proved they were the best side in the division, knocking over Point in the final match-up.

Hinds were the leading side throughout the season in Division 4, and while Pleasant Point and the two Geraldine sides weren’t that far off the pace, Hinds carried their form into finals night and consigned Point to their third silver medal of the evening.

McGregor issues challenge after winning slugfest Conor McGregor got his revenge.

Now he wants a third fight on his terms.

McGregor avenged his loss to Diaz by outpointing him yesterday at UFC 202 in a rematch of

their two-round welterweight thriller in March.

The two put on an actionpacked fight in which McGregor came out strong and then hung on in a tiring slugfest. Two judges

scored it 48-47 for McGregor, and the other had it 47-47.

Silver lining for Lydia

By Andrew Alderson A chip and putt for birdie on the 18th hole stood between Lydia Ko and an outright silver medal as women’s golf completed its Olympic return after a 116-year hiatus.

Ko obliged by easing her ball to within three metres of the pin and sinking a putt which teetered like a funambulist in a gusty southerly on the cup rim.

A miss would have seen Ko enter a three-hole play-off with Chinese bronze medallist Shanshan Feng at the Marapendi course.

Regardless, the world No.1’s effort earned New Zealand a record 17th medal at a Games.

South Korea’s Inbee Park won gold with a final round five-under 66 to finish five shots clear at 16-under.

She seemed an appropriate winner given her country holds 20 of the current top 50 places in the women’s rankings.

The seven-time major winner birdied four of her opening nine holes.

Ko could not match that.

Several birdie putts failed to drop as she recorded a two-under 69. She had moved into medal contention after a third-round 65 left her two shots off the lead.

However, Ko was celebrating winning silver rather than commiserating a lost gold.

“You win a gold, silver or bronze medal this week.

“Sometimes people get carried away and say you ‘lost’ to someone but, no matter the result, you won. You’ve done great.

“Seeing athletes with these medals on tv affected me more than I ever imagined.

“Seeing other New Zealanders winning on social media made me want to make my contribution to the tally.”

Ko appreciated the support on course.

“Seeing athletes like [rower] Eric Murray or the women’s sevens team out here has been great.

“I feel like I played better hearing their support coming down the stretch.

“It felt like I was playing back home.”

Award for Hamblin New Zealand athlete Nikki Hamblin and the American runner she tangled with in the heats of the 5000m have received a fair play award for the way they showed concern for each other as their hopes of reaching the final disappeared from their grasp. Hamblin tripped in their heat, bringing down Abbey D’Agostino but rather than react angrily, the 24-year-old American reached out to the distraught Kiwi to urge her to get up and finish the race.

Hamblin did so, but soon became aware that D’Agostino had then collapsed on the track. The 28-year-old went back to check on her health before being told to continue her race.

Farah runs into history Mo Farah of Britain has become the first runner in 40 years to win back-to-back long-distance doubles at the Olympics by taking gold in the men’s 5000 metres.

Farah already won the 10,000 metres at the Rio de Janeiro Games to go along with his two gold medals from the same events in London. The last man to win both distance races in consecutive Olympics was Finnish great Lasse Viren at the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Games.

Neymar restores pride Brazil’s trophy case is finally complete. The five-time World Cup champion won the only championship it was still missing yesterrday, defeating Germany 5-4 in a penalty shootout and winning a soccer gold medal for the first time.

Neymar scored with a superb free kick in regulation and converted the decisive penalty in the shootout after Brazilian goalkeeper Weverton stopped Nils Petersen’s shot. It was the crowning achievement of the 2016 Olympics for Brazil, restoring some of the nation’s soccer pride.

Late charge earns Willis bronze at Rio Nick Willis (left) has won his second Olympic 1500m medal with a thrilling late run to snatch the bronze medal in Rio yesterday.

The New Zealand middle distance star followed his silver medal at Beijing in 2008 with third place behind American Matt Centrowicz – the first runner from his country to win Olympic gold in the event in 100 years – and Moroccan Taoufik Makloufi, the defending Olympic champion. The winning time, 3min 50.00s is 24 seconds slower than the world record, but Willis won’t care.

Centrowicz was a deserving win-

ner, taking charge of a rough-run race and holding on impressively.

Willis has won New Zealand’s 18th medal at Rio, enhancing what was already a record performance by the country for medal success.

He had to work hard to stay alive in the race, being one of the victims of some unforgiving running which had Kenyan Ronald Kwemoi, the world No 1, tumble to the track.

For Willis, 33, it completes a fine meet. His semi-final run suggested not only was he running well, but he was racing strongly, an important distinction.

Andrea Hewitt couldn’t hide the sadness of the last nine months after crossing the Olympic finish line in Rio yesterday. The veteran New Zealand triathlete was comfortable talking about her seventh placing, why her pre-race tactics didn’t play out and how a stomach bug hampered her run.

But it was different when the subject turned to the ordeal of coping without her fiance and coach Laurent Vidal who died last November. Asked if she had considered pulling out of her third Olympics, Hewitt’s voice faltered.

“I’ve had so much support but the preparation for this was four years and this last year ... it wasn’t part of the plan.”

High profile players pulling out left and right, citing various and somewhat suspicious reasons for giving golf the Olympic finger. Then there were arguments about the sports competitiveness. Should it be an Olympic sport? Can they make it a worthwhile event? Well for women’s World No. 1 Lydia Ko, there’s no doubt about it, Olympic golf is here to stay. Ko said every player she encountered thought Olympic golf had an unparalleled success.

Three-peat for Hampstead

Hampstead have been crowned Mid-South Canterbury women’s division one hockey champions for a third successive year after holding their nerve in a penalty shootout to claim a final victory over Timaru Girls’ High School’s 1st XI. Hampstead, who are now unbeaten over back-to-back seasons, took the lead through captain Jess McCloy in the first half.

In a fine display of individual skill, McCloy beat four defenders and the goalkeeper to put the reigning champions ahead.

The school girls upped the intensity in the second half, but some fine goalkeeping by Kerry Chapman and solid defending from Michelle Knight and Karen McAulay kept TGHS at bay.

A controversial umpiring decision then saw goal-scorer McCloy sent off for two minutes.

In McCloy’s absence, Timaru Girls’ High levelled the score from a penalty corner with little time remaining.

Hampstead had a penalty corner of their own at the death but failed to find the net – as they had

with all five of their penalty corners throughout the clash.

Hampstead’s experience proved the difference in the shootout, though, as Rex Turnbull’s team showed their mettle to complete a historic three-peat.

“Once again some brilliant keeping from Kerry Chapman saw us win it with one person left to go,” said Turnbull.

“This completes the season undefeated and something the girls should be very proud of.”

Meanwhile, Wakanui Blue’s men’s division one final against Cambridge was a less memorable affair for the Mid Canterbury contingent.

Blue, who booked a place in the final after downing Hearts in a penalty shootout on Tuesday, fell to a 7-2 defeat.

Wakanui Black were also dealt a heavy loss in their plate final.

Mitch Moore’s men were on the wrong end of an 8-2 drubbing by Tainui after trailing 4-0 at half-time.

Carrington inspires Kiwi sprint canoeists For evidence of Lisa Carrington’s impact on New Zealand sprint canoeing, you didn’t need to look much further than the final of the women’s K4 500m.

Among the starters overnight were Jaimee Lovett, Kayla Imrie, Aimee Fisher and Caitlin Ryan, having surprised more proven

crews in the process.

They won their semi-final, suggesting a medal was a possibility, but finished fifth in a final won by the crew from Hungary, which included Danuta Kozak who claimed her third gold at the regatta.

Carrington can take some of the credit for the New Zealand

four’s development over the past 12 months.

The 27-year-old’s dominance of the past five years has boosted New Zealand junior numbers.

Hammers beat cold start

Mid Canterbury’s on-field preseason preparations concluded with a 42-34 victory over South Canterbury at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday.

The Hammers were forced to come from behind following a poor start against the old enemy.

South Canterbury came out firing, putting 18 unanswered points on the board in as many minutes.

Wing Maxx Morris crossed over twice in the corner before fullback Hamish Strachan added the visitors’ third soon after.

First five Zac Southen failed to convert from all three attempts, but the new scoring system of six points for a try and two for all kicks, meant South Canterbury led 18-0.

Seta Koroitamana returned fire for Mid Canterbury after being released by first five Jared Percival’s smart off-load – Percival then added the extras.

The wing was at it again five minutes later – reproducing the fine form he has shown all season in the blue of Rakaia – to cross over under the posts.

Percival converted to bring the Hammers within two points with 10 minutes of the first half remaining, but South Canterbury would have the final say of the opening 40.

Captain Kieran Coll bundled over for his side’s fourth try and Southen managed to slot his first conversion of the afternoon for a 26-16 half-time score.

But it was Mid Canterbury that drew first blood in the second stanza.

Open side flanker Troy Mangan touched down five minutes in, before Koroitamana returned the favour for Percival’s earlier off-load.

the second half. Percival converted to put the home side ahead for the first time at 30-26.

The lead was short lived, though.

South Canterbury posted their first try of the second half through blindside John Dyer on the hour mark and Southen was on target from his conversion to put his side four points ahead.

Mid Canterbury continued to play with plenty of urgency and the introduction of replacement prop Mike Lynch soon paid off as the Irishman touched down.

Rakaia first five Andrew Letham relieved Percival from kicking duties but was unable to convert Lynch’s try.

Eric Duff, who replaced the injured Iromi Dawai at lock, added another with three minutes to play to secure victory in the Hammers’ final preseason clash.

Co-coach Craig Dunlea credited his players for remaining positive during a turbulent opening 20 minutes.

“I think it was a few defensive errors, but once we addressed those it came together well,” he said.

“The bottom lip would have come out in a lot of teams being 18 down in 18 minutes, but they stayed positive.”

Dunlea said he and James Jowsey now face a tough task come selection time later in the week with

plenty of players stepping up and proving their worth in preseason.

“It’s going to be a tough job,” he said.

“A few of the development guys are also putting the pressure on, so they’re keeping the guys honest – there’s a lot of depth.”

Mid Canterbury will kick off their Heartland Championship campaign against North Otago at the Showgrounds next Saturday.

Mid Canterbury A proved too good for Canterbury Country Colts in fine conditions at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury took a 24-11 victory, but had to come from behind early on.

The Mid Canterbury side included six Colts as the union looks to expose its younger players to a higher standard of representative rugby.

Team manager Chris Burrows said the performance was pleasing.

“It was good.

“It’s a big step up for some of the younger guys but that’s the plan,” he said.

“We just want to give them

“It’s a bit of a learning curve for them but we’re improving every time we play.”

The A team’s win followed victories from Mid Canterbury under-16s, who downed Canterbury Country 26-17 and Mid Canterbury under-18s, who saw off the West Coast Colts 19-17.

The Wallabies spent much of the build up to this test suggesting no one rated them.

They would appear to be a prescient bunch.

As destruction jobs go, this was total by the All Blacks, to the tune of 42-8.

A performance for the ages such was its precision, skill, pace and artistry.

In all the years of rivalry between these two teams, rarely has there been such a one-sided contest.

There wasn’t a moment of drama or nervousness.

After one half-attack which yielded a penalty, the Wallabies barely featured as a serious force.

They were, largely if not exclusively, awful – their ineptitude in direct contrast to the All Blacks’ excellence and there really is now no confusion as to which of the two sides is under the most pressure.

The Wallabies weren’t able to even get the gun out of the holster, as it were, let alone fire a shot as much of the damage was inflicted in the first half, a period of supreme and relentless excellence from the All Blacks.

They owned the ball, they looked after it supremely well and their decision-making was faultless.

The All Blacks looked so easy on the ball, so comfortable and confident.

Beauden Barrett was magnificent – assured, relaxed, accurate and deadly – and made so much happen.

The Wallabies couldn’t cope with his speed.

He’d accelerate and be through a hole and, all of a sudden, there were acres of space opening up around him and allowing him to stay calm, pick the right next play and drive the dagger in that bit deeper.

His team-mates made it relatively easy for him with the way they angled their support lines, held their depth to ensure there were always a couple of options open to the ball carrier.

Kieran Read was always on hand to bash things a little further forward, as were Dane Coles, Sam Whitelock and Jerome Kaino.

All of the forwards were and if there was one staggering difference between the two teams, it was the skill level of the respective packs.

The All Blacks forwards were able to offload at will – take their time, control the collision and then play the ball as they wanted.

With so much momentum, the All Blacks were bordering on impossible to contain and the points stacked up quickly.

That was down to their physicality which was precisely where coach Steve Hansen would have wanted it to be.

Drama aplenty in hurdle An action-packed edition of the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s premier hurdle event at Ellerslie was concluded in favour of outsider Nancho Lass after the Craig Thornton-trained mare was awarded the race in the enquiry room.

Ex-pat Kiwi Richard Cully had produced the ride of the day to guide Ngatira Gold across the line in first place in the Harrison Lane-sponsored contest after a rails hugging effort saw the combination repel the challenges of Nancho Lass and the well favoured Just Got Home in the run home.

However an alarming outwards movement by the winner in the closing 150 metres saw stewards fire in a protest on behalf of both placegetters after they were hampered when attempting to challenge in the concluding stages.

The judicial panel agreed both had their chances affected enough to warrant a change of placings with Ngatira Gold relegated to third, providing Nancho Lass with the victory.

Trainer Craig Thornton was philosophical about the final result, delighted to grab the victory however disappointed it came against his partner Samantha Logan who trains Ngatira Gold.

“I’m definitely pleased to get the win, especially for my owners, but to have it go against Samantha isn’t how you would want it to go,” he commented.

“That’s racing however although I do think her horse is a massive chance in the Great Northern in a fortnight so I hope that can go in her favour then.”

Co-owner and breeder Emma McKeon is hopeful that exciting galloper McCullum will grow out of his penchant for finding trouble on and off the track as soon as possible. The dashing Shinko King gelding remained unbeaten after producing a convincing display in rating 65 company at New Plymouth on Saturday and then immediately threw a scare into his camp by jumping through the front of the winners tie-up stall when being unsaddled. Other than ruffling the feathers of his jockey, strapper and the television crew the gelding was thankfully unscathed.

“My mare loves the better ground and I said to Charlie (Studd) that it would definitely work for us and against some of those better fancied runners,” he explained.

“She is a lovely jumper, very good in the air and has really come to it this season.

“There is some doubt she can get the trip in the Northern but if the weather stays good then we will definitely take our chance in it.”

The victory topped off some consistent form for the eightyear-old mare who had finished third to Ready Eddie in the Waikato Hurdles earlier in the season.

The early sensation in the contest was created by race favourite Raisafuasho who took a heavy

tumble at the second fence on the journey.

Rider Emily Farr remained prone on the track as the race continued with riders instructed by the clerk of the course to skirt the obstacle at the 1200 metre mark during the final lap of the race.

Farr, who had also fallen in the previous event on the card, was placed in an ambulance and transported to hospital for further observation.

Myers team does it again with Kick Back The deadly Kevin Myers and Shaun Fannin pairing combined once again to take out a premier jumping contest as Kick Back prevailed in a thrilling finish to the Tractor Centre Pakuranga Hunt Cup at Ellerslie.

Despite her smallish stature Fannin was quick to praise his mounts fighting spirit.

“She’s really only a tiny mare but she has a huge heart and a real never-say-die attitude,” he said.

Young Kiwi superstar Our Waikiki Beach now truly has the Breeders Crown 3YO final at his mercy.

Already a hot favourite going into the series, his grip on the final became vice-like after the semifinals and a gun draw for next Sunday’s Group 1 final at Melton.

Our Waikiki Beach never looked out of second gear when he sprintlaned to beat his main danger, the leader Iceenothink, in his Crown semi at Bendigo on Saturday night.

And just minutes later he snared gate two for the final.

Purdon up against it Shane Tritton’s brilliant youngster Tingira Beach looks set to start favourite ahead of Mark Purdon’s Pacing Major in the Crown 2YO colts and geldings final. Tingira Beach won the easier semi-final by a big space then drew ideally in gate two for the final. Pacing Major enjoyed a gun run, but was unable to rundown the leader, Our Little General, in the other semi.

He’ll also have to overcome the back row in the final.

Warriors’ fate in others’ hands

By DaviD Skipwith Warriors coach Andrew McFadden admitted the NRL finals will not be discussed as his side look to halt their downward slide following Saturday night’s 34-6 defeat to the Cowboys.

The six-tries-to-one loss means the ninth placed Warriors need to win their remaining two home matches against Wests Tigers and Parramatta and rely on the eighth-ranked Gold Coast losing their final two games to give them hope of clinching a finals berth.

After improving steadily throughout a nine week period that reaped six wins and three golden point defeats, the Warriors have been their own worst enemies in their last two games, conceding 12 tries to the Rabbitohs and Cowboys.

McFadden said his side could only focus on finishing their season strongly and hope the Titans fall in next week’s home game against the in-form Panthers and their final round away match against the Cowboys.

“There’s still hope but it’s not within our hands,” said McFadden.

“We’re going to have to rely on results and with two home games we want to finish the season strong.

“We can’t really (use finals as motivation).

“We’ve just got to focus on finishing the year strong.

“What will happen will happen. We don’t have a crystal ball so we’ve just got to focus on each week.”

McFadden was left to lament 13 errors from his side that saw them put under tremendous pressure and provide the Cowboys with attacking possession that resulted in two tries to wing Kyle Feldt and a third to rampaging Kiwis lock Jason Taumalolo.

They hung tough to defend four consecutive sets just before halftime but a penalty allowed the Cowboys to maintain their attack before Justin O’Neill crossed to make it 22-6 at the break.

The Warriors defence stiffened somewhat in the second-half but mistakes continued to plague them before Ray Thompson and Cowboys five-eighth Michael Morgan capped the scoring.

As South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds did the week before, the Cowboys playmakers tortured the Warriors with short kicks in behind the line from Morgan featuring in the lead-up to Feldt’s double, and together with captain Johnathan Thurston’s boot the home side

forced six line dropouts to dominate possession.

Improved ball control was a feature of the Warriors play during their midseason revival but McFadden blamed a lack of awareness and attention to detail from his players as they continually coughed up possession inside their own half.

“It’s just down to individual concentration,” he said.

“You’ve just got to put a bit more attention on it.

“They know how to catch a ball and they know how to carry a footy, it’s got nothing to do with the mental fatigue.

“It’s just individual not thinking on the field.

“We defended pretty well for periods but we just gave up to much possession.

“And where we committed those errors, that was the telling factor.”

The first time the Warriors managed to complete a set and launch an attacking kick in the first-half it resulted in a mistake from Cowboys wing Antonio Winterstein before captain Ryan Hoffman crossed for their only try of the night.

Hoffman rued his side’s inability to repeat the tactic and the chance to apply more heat to the Cowboys defence.

“We certainly had belief and we just needed to build some pressure on them,” said Hoffman.

“That was the first time we had built pressure.

“We put in an attacking kick up and managed to get the ball back so it just showed if we had have put more pressure on the Cowboys we would have had more opportunities.”

Rookie gets Storm home A historic four-try haul to rookie Suliasi Vunivalu has fired Melbourne to a testy 38-18 victory over Manly, keeping them on track to claim the NRL minor premiership.

Vunivalu’s 30-minute quartet on Saturday lifted his tally to 21 in just 16 games, equalling the rookie record set by former Storm star and eventual dual-code international Israel Folau back in 2007.

However, as they have for most of the year, Manly refused to throw the towel in after the break, with another rookie Brad Parker completing a brace and Jorge Taufua crossing in his 100th NRL game.

While tempers flared a number of times in the closing stages, the Storm held on to claim their 18th win of the year.

End of a career Matt Giteau’s Wallabies career has ended in despair, with scans revealing the 103-Test warrior has a broken ankle. Giteau lasted just 10 minutes of Australia’s 42-8 loss to the All Blacks on Saturday night and will play no further part in the Wallabies’ Rugby Championship campaign. Turning 34 next month, Giteau is shattered in the knowledge that he has almost certainly played his last match for Australia. Giteau made a big financial sacrifice to put his country before French club side Toulon, where the midfield playmaker is among the highest-paid players in world rugby.

Sevens national heroes Fiji’s gold-medal-winning men’s sevens rugby team have arrived home to a heroes’ welcome. The team’s flight touched down in Nadi after a journey from Brazil via Auckland. Fans were asked not to greet the team at the airport and instead lined the streets or waited in their thousands at Prince Charles Park where an official welcome ceremony was held. The streets of Nadi were decked with banners and flags ahead of the team’s arrival. The Fiji Government has declared a national holiday tomorrow.
