Unemployment in the Ashburton District has rocketed up at the same time as the number of job seeker numbers nationally remain almost static. The latest figures released by the Ministry of Social Development show that at the end of March there were 317 registered job seekers in the Ashburton District, up 14 per cent from the 278 receiving job seeker support in the quarter to March 31, 2015. Compared to March 2014, numbers were up 17 per cent. Ashburton has gone from running with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country to showing an increase for the quarter, that has now

stepped ahead of the national change – 0.2 per cent. The surge in unemployment numbers came as a surprise to employment specialist Jim Henderson. His company Agstaff had not noticed a significant increase in the number of people looking for work, but he suggested the surge in people on job seeker support could be laid at the door of an early end to the killing season at Silver Fern Farms. “The works always skews the numbers and the first chain has gone off earlier this year so that could be a contributor,” Mr Henderson said. The early finish meant there would be a gap of about a month until the bulk of seasonal work started, he said.

He doesn’t believe the increase is dairy related, saying he had not noticed an upsurge in dairy farm staff looking for work. “I’ve always said that our dairy farmers are a bit smarter than the rest, they hang onto their good staff.” While job seeker numbers are almost unchanged nationally, against the same quarter last year, sole parent numbers have dropped by 5.7 per cent. The total number of beneficiaries nationally has also declined, by 1.5 per cent. The total number of people receiving a benefit across all three categories – job seeker, sole parent and supported living in the Ashburton District has risen from 975 last March 30 to 1001 a 2.6 per cent increase.
