Police raided a residential address in Tinwald yesterday morning as part of an ongoing mission to clamp down on illegal drug dealing and firearms.

Canterbury police tactical teams swarmed on the Johnstone Street property about 10am on Tuesday, entering the property on a search warrant.

The warrant was issued as part of an ongoing Canterbury police strategy aimed at reducing the harm caused by people committing drug-related of-

fences. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, from the Ashburton Police Station, said the operation was undertaken in conjunction with the Canterbury Organised Crime Unit. Police dog handlers were also at the scene.

“Ashburton police continue to work with the organised crime unit in disrupting the illegal possession of firearms and sale of drugs in Mid Canterbury,” Banfield said.

No arrests were made at the time, however, police have confirmed a cut-down firearm with ammunition, a taser device

and drug paraphernalia were found at the address.

“Police inquiries will continue to hold these offenders accountable,” Banfield said.

“As well as the social harm from the crimes associated to drug offending, there are also significant health risks involved for those people using methamphetamine.”

Police focus on former staff member

A former employee has been named as “pivotal” in an investigation into what is thought to be the largest cattle theft in New Zealand’s history.

The story of the theft of 500 incalf dairy cows from a property near Ashburton has now reached international audiences.

Police believe the animals were taken in small numbers from a herd of 1300 grazing on the Lagmhor property over several weeks.

Federated Farmers dairy industry chairman Andrew Hoggard has told a UK newspaper he believed the cows had fallen prey to black market meat butchers. He said it was the largest rustling event in the country’s history.

Scott Banfield told Fairfax police inquiries had focused on a staff member on the property. Banfield did not name the man, however Fairfax chose to do so. According to Fairfax the man, understood to have been the farm manager, has since been dismissed.

In a statement police said the investigation had indicated “auditing systems and processes may have been open to abuse” and they had spoken to several people.

They also warned farmers to be sure to complete background and reference checks before hiring.

SFF Shanghai Maling merger receives approval Silver Fern Farms proposal deal with Shanghai Mailing has received the Government’s tick of approval.

The Chinese company made an application to purchase a 50 per cent share in New Zealand’s largest meat processing co-operative late last year after 80 per cent of SFF shareholders voted in favour

of the deal. Under the terms of the deal Shanghai Maling will invest $261m into the company to create a 50/50 partnership.

The proposed investment is now unconditional and is set to complete on January 4, 2017, the first business day of the new financial year for the partnership.

Firefighting stalwart calls time on service By michelle NelSoN

A new garden sculpture has pride of place in former Methven volunteer firefighter Andrew Leask’s garden to honour his 31 years of service to the community.

Leask joined the Methven service in August, 1985, and by his own account “saw a fair bit of action” in the years which followed.

However, a recent health scare has prompted him to hang up his helmet with the intention of spending more time with his partner Marie Murphy doing the things they love.

Leask was given a clean bill of health in a medical check-up the night before he had a stroke, brought on by a tiny bone spur which nicked a blood vessel in his neck.

“I was told it was ‘severely un-

fortunate’ and very unusual,” he said.

“But it made me stop and think.

We’ve got a bach down south and we want to spend more time down there and do some more travelling. I intend to do a bit of fishing as well.”

Leask will remain involved with the Methven service as a life member and will continue to “tinker around” with the recently established memorabilia collection.

His comrades officially recognised his service on Saturday night, presenting a limestone sculpture carved with the fire service emblem, complete with the Methven badge.

But old habits die hard and while his firefighting days are over Leask admits the sound of the siren still makes him jump.

Big plans for old BMX track

Adrenaline junkies could have a new way to chase thrills in Ashburton with the planned rebirth of the town’s riverside BMX track.

The track on Environment Canterbury land off Kermode Street, was developed decades ago during the heyday of Ashburton’s BMX Club, but as the club’s membership declined, the track fell into disrepair, largely reverting to scrub and wasteland.

Where some might see just

overgrown land, members of Ashburton’s Mountain Bike Club have seen an opportunity and they’re keen to redevelop the land, building a pump and jump track that can be used as an extension to the current river trail.

All that stands between dream and reality, club president Geoff Evans said, is about $25,000. ECan has ticked off the project, the Ashburton District Council has pitched in with cash for land clearing, but money and a bit of red tape are the impediments that could

mean that new track won’t be open this summer.

“We’ve cleared the land but the track itself is pretty neglected,” Mr Evans said.

Club members were enthusiastic about the project and there was plenty of demand from the new wave of pump track enthusiasts, but the future of the project just came down to finding the funding, Mr Evans said.

“We’re wanting to plant it as well so it won’t just be a piece of barren land, but we’re basically starting out with a blank can-

vas, although we do want to use what is there rather than start absolutely from scratch.”

The new track will be built

by Track and Trail, designers of similar tracks in Wanaka and Queenstown.

When the pump track is completed, the challenge for the community will be to ensure the new facility is used and not abused by vandals, Mr Evans said.

Like the river trail, when the pump track is completed it will be available for public use, 24/7.

The Flock has arrived in Methven The fake flock of braided river birds has planted itself at the Methven iSite and conservationists want locals to take notice and maybe even add to the group.

The birds have been made and decorated by children at Windwhistle School and include wrybills, black fronted terns, blackbilled gulls, banded dotterels, pied stilts, black stilts and pied oyster-catchers.

The handmade flock is mimicking the arrival of real braided river birds which are returning from wintering in warmer climes to breed solely on Mid Canterbury’s braided riverbeds.

The project is the work of Braided River Aid and is a variation of an initiative hatched in England last year, then adopted by the Miranda Shorebird Centre in the North Island.

Braided River Aid manager Sonny Whitelaw said the handmade flock was currently in Methven but would move around the district in the leadup to nesting. People could go to the braid.org.nz website for templates of the birds and make their own if they wanted to take part.

The 36-year-old man is fighting to keep his identity a secret – a battle he has won since he was charged in November 2014. Migratory birds were at risk from predators such as cats, stoats, ferrets, weasels, rats and hedgehogs looking for an easy meal; other threats came in the form of dogs, 4WD vehicles and drying rivers.

She said a big issue was lack of water flows in the rivers and birds moved from place to place looking for nesting spots.

“All this is trying to raise attention to the fact the birds are precious and unique to New Zealand. People may think before they drive a 4WD through a bunch of nesting gulls.”

The Ashburton River is a traditional nesting place of the critically endangered black-billed gull and Environment Canterbury was working in the riverbed near State Highway One last week clearing dead weeds and creating deep water channels around shingle islands to make the arriving birds feel safer.

Teacher resigns A highly esteemed teacher has been struck off after admitting to a sexual relationship with a student in the 1970s.

The woman, described as “at the forefront of [her] relevant field of education”, accepted she had engaged in a sexual relationship with her pupil – then aged between 15 and 18 – over a number of years while she was his teacher in the late 1970s.

Both the man and the teacher were granted name suppression in a decision released by the Education Council yesterday.

The relationship became “more intimate than that of teacher and student” when he was 15, the tribunal noted, with the man claiming they had sexual intercourse before his 16th birthday.

This was disputed by the woman, who said intercourse occurred only after he turned 16.

In submissions to the council’s disciplinary tribunal, the teacher accepted she engaged in an unprofessional manner amounting to serious misconduct, the council decision said. - NZME

A teenager has appeared in court in relation to a brutal carjacking in Panmure last week which left a 65-year-old woman in hospital.

Lily Pritchard-Davis, 17, has been charged with aggravated robbery, theft and two charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

She appeared in the Auckland District Court yester and has not yet entered a plea. Two other suspects, under the age of 17, have been “identified,” said a police spokeswoman. They are currently in CYF custody on an unrelated matter and police are in the process of arranging to speak with them. Pritchard-Davis has been remanded in custody and is set to reappear in court in two weeks.

Foxton sit-in Foxton residents are staging a sit-in to stop the council moving the town’s cenotaph 10 metres.

Local body election candidates at a Meet the Candidates meeting on Monday night in Methven were happy with a good turnout.

Mention was made that the crowd of about 40 well exceeded the number of candidates, which was 12.

They included Methven Community Board incumbents Hamish Gilpin, Sarah Lock, and Dan McLaughlin. McLaughlin said he would have liked to have seen just as many come along to the Ashburton District Council annual plan meetings in the town.

Candidates also included new board hopefuls Russell Currie, Ron Smith, and Tammy Dickson.

Dickson is also standing for election to the Ashburton District Council’s western ward, and she attended alongside fellow western ward candidates Liz McMillan and Peter Reveley.

Mayoral candidates Donna Favel and incumbent Angus McKay were there, as were Environment Canterbury candidates Nicky Snoyink and John Sunckell.

Each had two minutes to introduce themselves and tell voters what they had to offer their town, district and region.

Questions from the floor followed each group of candidates, and McKay and Favel were asked the most, covering topics ranging from youth crime in Ashburton to the failed Lot 9 water block sale.

Attendee Kem Johnson said the Lot 9 debacle slashed his confidence in council processes, with something like that able to sneak through.

McKay said the first approach made to the council from someone wanting to bottle water did not even get to the council table.

The next approach included an offer to move the railway shunting yard, and talk about jobs and scholarships.

The council told them it would look into it to see what it could do, but when it came to getting further information from the interested party, there was not

“We were all quite open about it at the time, and we have been open about it ever since,” McKay said.

Favel said McKay had been accurate in his summation, adding she had recently been unsuccessful in moving at the council table that it should release the resource consent for water abstraction from the Lot 9 section.

She struggled with the fact that the council had to abide by ECan regulations to keep water in the Ashburton River, but at the same time was supporting abstraction of groundwater at the site.

“Sometimes you are the dog and sometimes you are the post,” she said.

A woman asked what can the council do to support increased safety in our community.

Favel said she had been recently saddened to hear that Ashburton had two of New Zealand’s top youth offenders. The town’s

senior sergeant had told her he had difficulty recruiting enough officers, while Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew had told her the town was fully staffed.

“It’s difficult to get a straight answer,” Favel said.

It was the council’s role to be advocating for tax dollars for better safety and services for the community.

McKay said $300,000 of council’s money annually went into crime prevention strategies such as contracted security services, security cameras and town ambassadors. He and other mayors had advocated for more police, something needed with a growing population in New Zealand.

Part of his job as mayor was to reassure, and statistics told him that Ashburton was among New Zealand’s safer places to live, which he believed had been part of the attraction for new arrivals coming to the town.

Another question from the floor raised concern over wheth-

er Methven residents themselves temporarily funding their own townsman could set a precedent.

McKay went into details of the contract, and mentioned a mistake where staff left out an appendix with an extra hour in the morning and extra hour at night.

Methven people had gone one step further in deciding on additional hours, the council had provided a ute, he hoped for a permanent fixture in next year’s budget.

Usually new contractors picked up locals as employees, but it had unfortunately not happened this time round.

Favel said there were lessons to be learned for councillors.

The contract was re-let without the community board being fully aware of the relevant clauses.

“Maybe we need a Rowdy clause that we communicate better when it’s important to the community,” she said. Rowdy is the nickname of the Methven townsman.

It’s been a winner in the rural sector and now the community has an opportunity to have a greater involvement in roading issues in urban Ashburton.

About three years ago the Ashburton District Council formed a community reference group for residents in the southern end of the district and this was quickly followed by the establishment of a second group that covered the rest of the rural area. The groups were designed to open up communication between residents and the council on roading issues.

The two rural groups have now merged and have now been joined by a new urban group.

Council roading manager Brian Fauth is a strong believer in the value of the roading groups, saying they’re a useful tool for the council in understanding the issues that are important to residents.

“At the formation meeting we put in place the terms of reference, what they could influence and what they couldn’t. We gave them an overview of where we see things currently and told them we want to get their views, what’s important to them,” Mr Fauth said.

Three district councillors are also members of the reference group, with each assigned to a specific part of town – east, west and Tinwald.

The groups were extra eyes on the ground when it came to roading issues and they also gave the community a better understanding of what the council was doing.

One of the issues raised at the first meeting were Mr Fauth’s desire to see Kea crossings installed outside all of the district’s primary schools and there was also discussion around the way in which the council assesses intersections that people deemed unsafe.

Other issues raised were the need to review the urban roading hierarchy for street clearance in an extreme weather event and congestion issues on State Highway 77 at the Moore Street and State Highway One intersection.

Hoping to make Mid Canterbury more welcoming A smile campaign aims to make Mid Canterbury a more welcome environment for newcomers.

The Start with a Smile initiative is encouraging locals to smile and start a conversation with someone from a different background – whether it’s at work, school or waiting in line at the supermarket.

The campaign was first run in Christchurch last year, by the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, in response to the large number of overseas rebuild workers in the city.

Ashburton District Council has taken up the campaign, as part of its leading role in the newcomer and migrant settlement work programme, under the Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy.

Strong community support has pumped up the number of days the Ashburton Trust Event Centre’s auditorium was used over the 12 months to June 30.

Event days rose from 142 to 164 for the year in spite of the number of bookings for touring events dropping by more than half to just 11 over that time.

In a report to the Ashburton District Council centre manager Roger Farr said indications were that there would be less funding available for touring artists over the coming months, but in spite of that bookings at the centre had picked up for the second half of this year, with 12 events confirmed through to December 30.

A decrease in the number of rural training events held over the year saw bookings in the Bradford Room drop from 123 days to 115 last year.

Both the Green Room and the Woodham Foyer, however saw significantly increased business over the year – the Green Room was up from 57 to 76 days

and the Woodham Foyer up from 58 to 81 days.

Ticket sales over the year were down 25 per cent on the back of a decline in the number of events staged.

Declining ticket sales saw the centre end the financial year down 4.6 per cent on budget. Bar sales were 38 per cent down and catering 8 per cent down.

Hiring out its technical labour and equipment is proving an income growth area, 100 per cent up on budget, however, if this growth continues, Mr Farr said it may become necessary to employ an additional technician.

The Event Centre scored two firsts as hosts over the past year – the New Zealand Male Choir Festival and the Ashburton College Ball.

If the public are its number one fans, pigeons continue to be the event centre’s number one enemy, absorbing considerable time and money in clean up duties, he said.

Crash victims Australians A victim of the horrific crash at Huntly was a violinist with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Times reported.

Stephen Phillips, 54, and his two stepsons, 12 and 14 years old, died in Monday’s horror road crash in Huntly.

They were among a family who had just arrived in the country from Australia.

The family are believed to have been travelling in a rental car when they crashed.

The boys’ mother Belinda Williams and her daughter, Tessa, were the survivors of the crash, according to the Times.

The family had left their home on Monday morning to spend two weeks visiting Williams’ family in New Zealand.

Phillips was First Violinist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra while Williams played viola for the orchestra as a casual guest musician, neighbour Billy Azad said.

“Stephen was a good gentleman, he was good at repairing

pianos, a handyman kind of guy,” he told the Times.

“Belinda was a great lady, she would drop other kids on the street to the bus stop.”

Phillips had been with the orchestra since 1987 and Williams since 2002, the orchestra chairman Greg Wanchap told the Times.

They left their home in the hands of their neighbour, Azad, who told the Times the neighbours were shocked at the news of the crash.

“They were very good neighbours, I have got a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old and they would look after them when we had to go into town.

“It is horrific, it is hard to swallow.”

He said the neighbours were in shock as the mother, her partner and her three children were an integral part of the street.

“They were family to us all on the street,” he told said. “Very kind hearted people - the street won’t be the same.”

I

f you’re on the electoral roll then you should have received a tidy packet of ballot papers in your mailbox.

Don’t throw those papers in the rubbish bin. Take them from their envelope and set them aside until you have time to look at them carefully. What each one of us does with those papers could determine the success or otherwise of our district over the next three years.

Local body politics is not everyone’s cup of tea, but many who profess not a jot of interest in who’s making decisions about life in the Ashburton District are the first to squeal when something happens they don’t agree with.

Well now it’s our chance to make sure we have the people sitting in the decision making seats who we believe will do the absolute best for our district over the next council term. That doesn’t mean voting for your next door neighbour, someone you like the look of or a candidate who might make lots of noise without any real substance.

Voting comes with huge responsibility. Get it wrong and we lumber our community with decision makers who either can’t make decisions or who make decisions for all the wrong reasons.

Get it right and we’ll flourish, thrive and continue to stand out for all the right reasons.

This election we have plenty of choice when it comes to candidates for all three council wards, the mayoralty and the Ashburton Trust. Those candidates are to be commended for their willingness to put themselves in the public spotlight; we assume they’ve all been motivated to do so by a desire to do right for the place they call home.

The challenge is now ours. The decisions we make when we vote will influence the shape of our district, its economy, its welfare and whether it progresses or stands still over the next three years.

To keep our place as a national leader, as a place where people want to raise kids, build a life and grow old we can’t afford to stand still. We need to be led, not by the safe and cautious, but by a team of forward thinkers, movers and shakers; people who are not afraid to stand up and be counted.

Bomber’s arrest shocks To neighbours and customers of his family’s storefront chicken takeout, Ahmad Khan Rahami was a friendly, quiet presence behind the counter who liked talking about cars and was generous with free food.

So when the 28-year-old Afghan immigrant was apprehended yesterday as the lead person of interest in bombings in New York and New Jersey, those who knew him expressed shock, questioning whether his turn to religiosity in recent years might have hinted at views otherwise kept hidden.

Rahami’s father and brothers had long nursed tensions with neighbours and officials in Elizabeth, New Jersey, over the restaurant’s late hours, a conflict the family claimed in a lawsuit was the result of discrimination against them as Muslims.

But Ahmad Rahami’s demeanor – increasingly devout but more likely to talk about worldly pursuits than his faith – never hinted at anything but goodwill, customers said.

“He’d always talk about his cars. He loved his Civics, he loved going fast,” said Ryan McCann, a frequent customer at First American Fried Chicken, the restaurant that

End called to ceasefire; aid convoy attacked Syrian or Russian aircraft have struck an aid convoy near Aleppo killing 12 people, according to a war monitor, as the Syrian military declared a one-week truce brokered by the United States and Russia over.

The United Nations confirmed the convoy was hit but gave no details on who carried out the attack or how many died as world leaders converged on New York for their annual UN gathering under

the shadow of fresh violence in the Syrian civil war.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the attacks were carried out by either Syrian or Russian aircraft, adding that there had been 35 strikes in and around Aleppo since the truce ended.

Carrey sued over death Veteran comic actor Jim Carrey is being sued for allegedly procuring drugs under a bogus name for his ex-girlfriend, who died of an overdose last year, and then trying to hide his involvement. According to the suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by Mark Burton, the estranged husband of Carrey’s former girlfriend Cathriona White, the actor “used his immense wealth and celebrity status” to obtain opioids for her. Burton alleges that the actor purchased the drugs under the fake name “Arthur King” and then “took steps to conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability” after White’s death. Carrey’s publicist could not immediately be reached for comment.

TVNZ’s highest paid gets $1.1m TVNZ has confirmed that chief executive Kevin Kenrick is its highest paid employee, on about $1.1 million a year.

The state broadcaster had not previously explicitly identified what Kenrick earned.

In keeping with the pay disclosure practices followed by the country’s listed companies, it had revealed only the number of employees who earned over $100,000, in salary bands of $10,000.

For example, TVNZ’s last annual report said 48 current employees earned between $100,000 -$110,000 in the year to June 2015.

It disclosed that two of its staff earned between $560,000-$570,000 over that period and that one employee earned between $640,000$650,000.

The highest paid employee in that list earned between $1.10m$1.11m for the year.

TVNZ confirmed yesterday that its highest paid staff member was Kenrick and not any of its presenters. It will also disclose his pay explicitly in its upcoming annual report.

It will not, however, release any pay details of its presenters.

“Full disclosure of CEO remuneration is best practice amongst listed entities and TVNZ will be providing this same level of transparency in its upcoming annual report,” TVNZ chairwoman Joan Withers said.

“The CEO is the highest paid role within TVNZ and Kevin’s remuneration is reviewed annually against market data received by the board from independent specialist advisers. The incentive component of the package is based on the board’s assessment of performance relative to the specific objectives set for the financial year,” Withers said.

Tenants in Auckland have escaped much of the impact of the city’s soaring house prices with rents increasing by less than the price of a cup of coffee in a year According to figures from Trade Me, despite the average asking price for a house in the country’s biggest city jumping by $88,000 over the course of a year, rents rose by just $1.

The median weekly rent of $500 in August was still the most expensive in the country but had risen by just 19 per cent over the last five years.

Over the same time house prices in Auckland, according to Trade Me’s Sale Price Index, have jumped by 73 per cent from just under $497,000 to almost

$859,000. “While landlords have seen the value of their properties increase markedly, it looks like it’s been a challenge to leverage that via rental increases,” said Trade Me’s property head Nigel Jefferies.

Rents rose faster in 11 other regions in the year to August while Auckland rose by just 0.3 per cent.

“Excluding Auckland, the rental market across the country is very strong and tenants are forking out a lot more on average.”

Median weekly rents outside Auckland have risen by $20 to $380 in the year with Bay of Plenty leading the way with 20 per cent growth.

It is now $420 a week – the same as it is in Wellington.

Powerhouse head confident of raising $A10m minimum

BY PAUL MCBETH Powerhouse Ventures managing director Stephen Hampson is confident the Christchurchbased technology incubator will raise the minimum $A10 million in an initial public offering after extending the closing date by a week.

The offer opened on August 17 and will now close on September 23 having initially been scheduled to end on September 15.

Hampson said the extension was because brokers had asked for more time to “pull in the stragglers” on the retail side, while institutional investors sought some breathing space after company reporting season.

“I’ve been delighted by how it’s gone in two ways: the level of commitment, which is superb, but also that balance in the share register of sufficient retail interest to give this spread and liquidity, but also investors in there for the long-term, which is ideal for

a company like ours,” Hampson said.

“Indications at the moment are all very good – I’m feeling quite comfortable that we’ll have a successful IPO, and for me, success means beyond the minimum.”

The company plans to raise up to $A20 million selling 18.7 million shares at $A1.07 apiece, representing about 49 per cent of the shares on issue.

The proceeds will largely go to expanding the firm’s $NZ20.9 million investment portfolio across 19 early stage companies that are collectively worth $NZ133.6 million.

Powerhouse is one of three technology incubators that accesses operational funding, preincubation grants, and repayable loans for start-ups they co-fund through government innovation funding agency Callaghan Innovation.

It sought to raise $NZ15 million as a precursor to the ASX listing but ultimately attracted $NZ5.2

million in the 2016 financial year, following on from $NZ3.6 million raised in 2015.

In February it raised $NZ1.76 million in an equity crowdfunding offer.

Originally, Powerhouse had planned an NZX listing in New Zealand but decided instead to seek a sole Australian listing because of its bigger capital markets.

Hampson said most of the institutional interest was from micro-cap investors – who typically focus on small listed companies – with more based in Australia than in New Zealand.

“There’s been good interest in the model all the way through,” he said.

“Institutional investors have been very clear with us that ‘you’ll fit our fund when you’re at this size and this stage’, which gives us a target to aspire to.”

Brian Marsh has been going through old negatives that belonged to his father Cedric Marsh.

Cedric grew up in the MayfieldMount Somers area and during the war he did his basic military training. He was kept back to provide labour on farms in the district, with three of his older brothers overseas.

His son remembers that Cedric worked for the Greenslade family at Anama.

He had a camera and took quite a few photos from the early 1940s through to about the mid 1950s when he sold it.

Most of the people in the photos provided Brian does not recognise, but he would love to know who they are and if any readers’ memories are jogged.

Make mince into something special

M

ince is all too often dismissed as a cheap meat, one that belongs in a flat kitchen rather than a kitchen where making a meal involves culinary creativity.

But under-sell or ignore mince at your peril. Yes, there’s the fatty, nasty, cheap version to be avoided at all costs, but there’s also the lean, higher priced version, that is packed with goodness without the fat burden many still associate with mince.

And mince doesn’t have to be given the everyday treatment either, it can be happily dressed up and, with a little love and a few extra ingredients, it can do a turn as a meal you’d happily serve to guests.

Lamb and rosemary cannelloni 600-800g lean lamb mince 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 1C chicken stock 1/4 t cayenne pepper 1t sugar 2T fresh rosemary, finely chopped 1C pumpkin, grated 1C spinach, chopped 3/4 C fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped (plus extra for garnish) 200g crème fraîche Cannelloni 3-4 fresh lasagne sheets 1 cup cheese, grated – mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan or a mixture

■ Reduce the heat to medium and add another dash of oil to the pan. Add the onion and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes until the onion is soft.

■ Add the lamb back to the pan ■ Add one can of tomatoes, stock, cayenne pepper, sugar, rosemary, pumpkin and spinach.

■ Simmer for about 10 minutes until reduced to a thick sauce.

■ Stir through the mint and season to taste.

■ Cannelloni ■ Cover the base of the baking dish with the second can of tomatoes ■ Bring a pot of water to the boil.

■ Remove from heat then soak the unfolded pasta sheets for a few minutes to soften.

■ Gently remove with a wooden spoon and cool slightly, then cut into rectangles.

■ Spoon a line of the mince near the short edge of a rectangle and roll it up ■ Place the roll seam side down in the baking dish.

■ Repeat until the dish is full.

■ Spread the crème fraîche over the cannelloni tubes to cover them.

■ Sprinkle with the cheese, season with salt and pepper and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.

■ If need be, grill for a few minutes just before serving to get it golden and bubbling on top.

■ Just before serving, sprinkle with extra mint leaves.

■ Serve with a crisp seasonal salad dressed with vinaigrette.

Moroccan lamb and couscous

2T olive oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 carrots, peeled and cut diagonally 1 large kumara, cubed 200g canned tomatoes (puréed or mashed) 50g dried apricots, finely chopped 2T clear honey 375ml chicken stock 2t Moroccan spice mix 1t all spice Buttered couscous 250g couscous 200ml boiling water Knob butter Fresh herbs ■ In a large bowl, mix together lamb mince, spice mix, breadcrumbs and egg yolk.

■ Shape meatballs from a tablespoonful of mixture rolled in the palm of your hands.

■ Roll each ball in flour that you have seasoned with salt and

pepper.

■ Heat oil in a non-stick frying-pan and brown meatballs gently on all sides for 10 minutes.

■ Place in covered casserole dish and prepare sauce.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Sauce: Heat oil in a frying-pan and gently sauté onion and garlic until softened.

■ Add remaining sauce ingredients. Simmer for 5–10 minutes.

■ Pour sauce over meatballs and cover casserole.

■ Bake in a moderate oven for 30 minutes to enable flavours to develop.

■ Ten minutes before casserole is cooked, put couscous with salt and pepper to taste into a large bowl and stir in boiling water.

■ Cover with a tea towel and leave to soak for 10 minutes.

■ Add a knob of butter and fresh herbs to taste.

■ Cover and simmer gently for 30 minutes. Alternatively, cook in a casserole in a 180°C oven for about 30-40 minutes.

Stuffed aubergine 500g lamb mince 3 medium-sized aubergines 1 onion, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 1/2 t ground cumin seeds 1/2 t grated nutmeg Pinch dried chilli flakes 1C tomato pasta sauce 1T tomato paste 1t Worcestershire sauce White sauce 3 to 3 1/2 cups full-cream milk 1 bay leaf 2-3 parsley stalks 1 onion, sliced 3 whole black peppercorns 50g butter 3T flour 2 eggs, separated 1/4 C parmesan, grated

wise.

■ Drizzle with a little oil and place into the oven flesh side up in a lined roasting dish for 35-40 minutes until just soft.

■ Scoop out the flesh, leaving skins with a layer of flesh about 1cm thick.

■ Roughly chop flesh and place back in aubergine skins. Return skins to roasting dish and set aside.

■ Heat a dash of oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat and add the lamb mince.

■ Once brown, set aside.

■ Lower heat and cook the onion and garlic slowly until very soft.

■ Add spices and fry for 30 seconds until aromatic.

■ Stir in pasta sauce, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce and return lamb mince to the frying pan.

■ Simmer for five minutes and season to taste.

■ Sauce: Place the milk over a low heat in a small saucepan with the bay leaf, parsley stalks, onion and peppercorns. Heat until bubbles are just starting to appear around the outside.

■ Set aside to infuse.

■ Melt butter over a low heat in another saucepan then use a wooden spoon to stir in the flour.

■ Cook, stirring until you have a smooth golden paste (roux).

■ Strain the infused milk into a jug then gradually stir into the roux.

■ Continue to stir over a low heat until the sauce is thick.

■ Beat egg yolks into the sauce.

■ Whip egg whites until they just hold their shape then fold into the sauce with the grated parmesan.

■ Spoon lamb mixture into eggplant skins.

■ Top with white sauce and place in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden.

■ Serve with steamed green vegetables.

Midweek Munchies

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Heat a dash of oil in a large saucepan over a very high heat.

■ Add the lamb in two batches to brown, breaking up any lumps with a wooden spoon.

■ Drain and set aside in a bowl.

Parker focused on big bout

Hackers publish data on more big stars

By Patrick Mckendry In getting to the point where he is standing on the brink of a world title shot at the age of 24, Joseph Parker has had to be driven and focused, but now that he is here, his promoters are taking few chances.

Parker’s fight against Russian Alexander Dimitrenko in Manukau a week on Saturday is an opportunity for him to stamp his mark as a true contender ahead of his potential title fight against Anthony Joshua, which could happen as early as November, but more likely in March next year.

The New Zealander needs a good performance for his own confidence as much as anything, and in order to keep him in the best possible frame of mind, Duco Events have installed Parker’s parents Sala and Dempsey in a central Auckland hotel room directly across from his.

It’s for support, said Duco’s Dean Lonergan, but just as important will be their guidance and ability to minimise distractions as their eldest boy’s career gets set to go to a new level.

“We’re trying a couple of new things for this camp ... just little things like Joseph’s mum and dad have been in the training camp for the whole time he’s been here, just to make him feel more comfortable and relaxed,” Lonergan said.

“They have breakfast together in the morning and dinner at night.

Joseph Parker is well focused for his bout against Alexander Dimitrenko a week on Saturday.

“It’s a pretty cool environment to be in if you’re Joseph Parker.

“It’s something a little different, and not that Joe gets psyched up or anything, he’s always very calm, but it’s just an environment that he’s really enjoying.”

For his part, Russian Dim-

itrenko, who faced the media in Auckland yesterday, appears supremely confident.

The 34-year-old will take to the Vodafone Events Centre ring with an 8cm height advantage and with 40 professional fights behind him in comparison with Parker’s 20 pro appearances.

He has stood by his recent claims that Parker in fact lost his fight against the France-based Carlos Takam in Manukau in May, the IBF eliminator bout which earned him the right to challenge Joshua for his title.

Asked about his comments in a recent press conference in Hamburg in which he disputed the decision, Dimitrenko replied: “You saw this fight?”

When told, “Yes, I was there”, he asked: “Who do you think won?”

The Herald responded: “I think Joseph won”, to which Dimitrenko replied: “If the fight was in France then the fight would have gone to Takam.”

Lonergan, meanwhile, confirmed discussions with Joshua’s promotor Eddie Hearn were continuing about Parker fighting on the undercard of his next title defence in Manchester on November 26.

There remains a chance that Parker, slated to fight David Price, could step up to the main event, but both camps would prefer their men to meet in March.

Lonergan left the door open for Parker’s stablemate Izu Ugonoh to fight Joshua should negotiations with Kubrat Pulev fall over.

“Izu has gone into that top 15 [of the IBF] and he’s available for selection.

“If they come back to us and said ‘Izu is up now and then we’ll take Joe’ we’d be more than happy with that and we’ll negotiate a deal.”

1. David Purley At the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix, Britain’s Purley abandoned his car and ran across the track when he saw fellow driver Roger Williamson trapped inside his burning, upside-down vehicle following a crash.

Despite braving the fire Purley couldn’t save Williamson, but he was awarded the George Medal for his bravery.

2. Pete Goss During the Vendee Globe yacht race of 1996, the British sailor received a mayday call that fellow competitor Raphael Dinelli was in serious trouble in the treach-

erous waters of the Southern Ocean.

Goss abandoned his own race and sailed into hurricane-force winds to help find Dinelli. He was awarded France’s Legion d’Honneur for his bravery.

3. Nikki Hamblin The Kiwi runner was alongside Abbey D’Agostino in the 5000 metres heats of this year’s Olympics when they clipped each other and the American fell to the ground in agony. Hamblin helped her up and encouraged her to finish the race, which she eventually did. Both athletes were awarded the Pierre de Coubertin award for sportsmanship.

4. Mark Taylor In the 1998 Test match between Australia and Pakistan at Peshawar, Australian skipper Taylor ended the day 334 not out, equaling the then highest Test score with the legendary Sir Don Bradman. Taylor could have continued but instead declared to keep the record intact.

5. Tim Smyczek American journeyman Smyc-

zek had pushed Rafael Nadal to 6-5 in the fifth set at last year’s Australian Open when, at 30-0, Nadal missed his first serve after being distracted by a call from the crowd.

After the ball was called out Smyczek told the umpire he wanted his opponent to have two serves. The American lost the point and, soon after, the match.

6. Andrew Flintoff At the end of the 2005 Ashes Test at Edgbaston, England celebrated when Steve Harmison dismissed No 11 Michael Kasprowicz.

At the same time Flintoff consoled Brett Lee, who had so nearly batted his team to victory.

7. Jack Nicklaus Back when it was just the British Isles taking on America in the Ryder Cup, in 1969 at Birkdale, Tony Jacklin had a three-foot putt on the 18th green of the final match to level the contest.

Rather than make his opponent putt it out, Nicklaus conceded to the Englishman, ensuring it ended in a tie (although the US kept

the Cup as the holders).

8. Paolo Di Canio When West Ham played Everton in 2000 Di Canio declined to fire a cross into the goal late on with the score at 1-1.

The Italian had seen Everton keeper Paul Gerrard lying injured on the ground and instead picked the ball up so he could get treatment.

The game ended 1-1.

9. Luz Long In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, with Hitler in attendance, Jesse Owens was in danger of failing to qualify for the long-jump final when given two no-jumps.

Long suggested the American be allowed to mark out his run, and Owens ended up beating the German to the gold medal.

10. Jim Redmond At the 1992 Olympics Derek Redmond was running in the 400 metres semi-final when his hamstring popped 150 metres from the line.

With his son in agony, his father Jim came on to the track to help him finish the race.

Olympic champions Mo Farah, Rafael Nadal and Justin Rose are among the latest names targeted by a Russian cyber espionage group the Fancy Bears.

Britain’s Farah became only the second man to retain the 5000 and 10,000 metres Olympic titles at the Rio Games last month while compatriot Rose won the first gold medal in golf for 112 years.

Spaniard Nadal, a 14-times tennis grand slam winner, won Olympic men’s doubles gold with Marc Lopez.

He also won the men’s singles title at the 2008 Beijing Games but missed London 2012 due to a knee injury.

WADA has said it believes the hackers, named as APT28 and Fancy Bears, gained access to its anti-doping administration and management system (ADAMS) via an IOC-created account for the Rio Games.

Documents relating to Farah, and published on the fancybear. net website, showed that the distance runner had no active Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) at the time of the Olympics.

He received intravenous infusions of saline solution, morphine sulphate and vicodin administered orally during a period in hospital between July 3-5, 2014 when he had collapsed after a training run.

Prior to that, he was given a TUE for an 80mg dosage of the corticosteroid triamcinolone in October 2008.

Rose had authorisation for daily dosages of the anti-inflammatory drug prednisolone between May this year and June 20.

The documents relating to Nadal, who was out for more than two months with a wrist injury that forced him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon before the Olympics, showed exemptions in 2009 and 2012.

The fourth release of data so far concerned 26 athletes from Argentina, Belgium, Burundi, Canada, Denmark, France, Britain, Hungary, Spain and the United States.

Other high-profile names included Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba, British cyclist Callum Skinner and double Olympic rowing gold medallist Helen Glover.

TUEs allow athletes to take banned substances for verified medical needs and there is no suggestion any of those named have broken any rules.

WADA has said the “criminal attack” has recklessly exposed personal data in an attempt to smear reputations.

The agency has also said it believes the attacks are being carried out as retaliation for investigations that exposed state-sponsored doping in Russia.

1st XI set for Aussie trip

Ashburton College’s senior cricketers will be jetting across the Tasman on Friday for their pre-season tour before beginning their Canterbury Schools’ 1st XI season next month.

It is Ashburton College’s fourth biennial pre-season trip

as the team look to dust off any cobwebs ahead of their domestic campaign.

College will play two 50 over games against Caloundra and Sunshine Grammar and three T20 fixtures, including one under the lights – which is set to be a unique experience for the boys.

The tour, which was initiated by former Mid Canterbury stalwart Dennis Mably in 2010, also aims to introduce new players to the senior set up.

The players have been put through the paces by coach Mark Reid in pre-season training since August, but fundraising for the trip began in December.

The squad has taken on a wide range of ventures to raise the funds necessary for such a major trip – from collecting rubbish to making and selling more cheese rolls than they care to remember.

The College cricketers will return to New Zealand on September 30.

Seamers may yet have their day in India By david Leggat New Zealand’s fears about facing a spinner’s delight in this week’s first test against India may be misplaced – but only slightly.

The tourists are aware spin, as always, will play a significant part in the three-test series, starting in Kanpur tomorrow night.

However the groundsman at the Green Park ground has moved to play down worries that New Zealand might be greeted by an old style ‘bunsen burner’ of a pitch, that is one which offers significant turn from day one.

In tests against South Africa at both Nagpur and Mohali last season, the ball spun alarmingly and India won both tests inside three days.

The highest of the eight totals was 215. India’s spinners took 39 of the 40 South African wickets.

Tall offspinner Ravi Ashwin snared 20 of them and he shapes as the largest thorn in New Zealand’s side in this series.

Kanpur’s groundsman Shiv Kumar is optimistic there won’t be a repeat of those surfaces and expects the pitch will play better than anticipated, playing down the fact cracks were visible three days before the start.

There are three reasons for his confidence: the surface is hard and the cracks aren’t loose; the binding qualities of the Kanpur soil evidently make it unlikely to break up; and the pitch is being watered consistently to aid the process of keeping the soil intact.

Some rain is forecast, which would help the seamers, who otherwise will be there to remove the shine, although Neil Wagner’s reverse swinging talents should be useful on a dry pitch.

Kumar expects good batting conditions for the first two days, then the pitch will start to take turn, albeit slowly.

Which adds up to a recipe of winning the toss and batting.

New Zealand will be pondering their spin options, but may take the view that a third spinner could be a luxury which they can’t afford in order to keep the team balance right.

One player has been ruled out, allrounder Jimmy Neesham, who has a sore rib, suffered when he was hit in the nets last week.

It cut back his involvement in the one warmup game in New Delhi. But he should be fit for the second test in Kolkata.

New Zealand’s coaches have drummed in the need for the batsmen to be positive during the tests.

The message has been spelled

out that the ball will be moving all the time, whether with conventional or reverse swing or spin.

“We’ve talked a lot about where they’re going to hit the ball,” batting coach Craig McMillan said.

“We’ve really focused on scoring, not being defensive, because sooner or later, if you’re stuck at an end for a length of time one (delivery) will have your name on it.

“To put the pressure back on the bowlers you have to be scoring.”

McMillan said batsmen also need to be conscious of getting in good, strong positions when defending, and stressed the need for players to be ready for distinctly Indian batting conditions, with a ring of fielders around the bat and intense pressure on all the time at the crease. - NZME

Sri Lanka bowler Nuwan Kulasekara has been bailed after being involved in a traffic accident that led to the death of a 28-yearold motorcyclist. Players robbed on bus Six armed men hijacked a bus carrying Venezuela’s Trujillanos soccer team and stole most of the players’ and coaching staff’s belongings, the first division club said yesterday. The team were returning from Monagas, where they lost 2-1, when the bus was targeted near Boca de Uchire. “The team was held up for two hours. They threatened that if the bus had a GPS or was under escort they would detonate grenades to destroy evidence,” Trujillanos said.

Murphy back on the track

By Dale BuDge Four-time Bathurst winner and former Supercars star Greg Murphy is coming out of retirement for next month’s Hampton Downs 101.

Murphy will co-drive an Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3 alongside track owner Tony Quinn at the inaugural event at the remodelled race track.

Murphy, who works as a television commentator for Supercars these days, stepped away from competitive racing in 2014 but says the opportunity to participate in the first Hampton Downs 101 was too appealing, having first got a taste of GT racing in 2013.

“It was an incredibly enjoyable experience,” says Murphy.

“The atmosphere was just fantastic and I’m expecting big things from the first Hampton Downs 101.

“I’m at Hampton Downs all the time doing ride days and I’ve seen how the place has changed since Tony Quinn bought it last year.

“The 101 is going to be an amazing event and it was something I wanted to be a part of.”

The Australian GT series has grown in popularity in recent years.

“It’s changed dramatically from a couple of years ago from when I did the Highlands 101,” Murphy says.

“It’s a very impressive championship now and it’s really found a niche in Australasia.

“It’s not just in this part of the world either.

“Globally, GT racing is going from strength to strength.

“They’re cool cars. They look awesome and they’re awesome to drive.

“With traction control, ABS and aerodynamics, they’re a very different machine to get behind the wheel of.

“I think Hampton Downs is going to suit those cars massively, just the style of corners and some of the fast stuff, it’s going to be an awesome track to drive a top GT car.”

The Murphy/Quinn combination should be pretty competitive.

Murphy has done plenty of mileage at Hampton Downs, albeit in his V8 SuperTourer which is based there, while Quinn has won the Highlands 101 in 2013 (with Fabian Coulthard) and 2014 (with Garth Tander).

“I think if you combined our ages, we might be one of the oldest teams in the 101,” Quinn joked.

“In his day Murph was clearly one of the best drivers around but, like all of us, he’s getting a bit long in the tooth now.

“We might not be as sharp as we used to be but we’ll go alright.

“He’s raced in GTs a couple of times before so I’m sure it won’t take him long to get back up to speed.”

The Hampton Downs 101 is to be held on October 28-30 and is the third round of the Australian GT Endurance Championship.

Conference format to stay SANZAAR boss Andy Marinos says Super Rugby needs to improve its competitiveness, but the hotly debated conference system which made its debut in 2016 is here to stay.

The first year of the conference format drew plenty of criticism, especially around the draw with some sides not playing New Zealand teams and some teams hosting finals against sides which accumulated more points.

“The format is going to stay in conferences for the foreseeable future given our geographical challenges we’ve got,” Marinos said in Sydney yesterday.

‘It’s more ‘how do we get the competitiveness in the teams and understanding that it’s not easy’.

“This is a blooming tough competition.”

Australian representatives had the chance to air any grievances at this week’s two-day meeting of coaches, CEOs and other stakeholders at the 2016 Super Rugby review in Sydney, but were apparently diplomatic.

“They were quite quiet to be honest but they understand where we are in the strategy,” Marinos said.

Several Australian and South African sides struggled in the 2016 Super tournament, which was dominated by New Zealand teams, who took three of the four semi-final placings.

A coroner has found that an Auckland rugby player died from complications from blunt trauma to the head. Viliami Halaifonua, also known as Willie, died in July, 2013, in Auckland City Hospital after collapsing at a rugby match.

Sharks daring to dream Why not us?

It’s a curious question for a club, seeking to break Australia’s most famous sporting hoodoo, to be asking.

But it’s the catchcry driving Cronulla’s quest for a maiden NRL title.

Drive into the Sutherland-Shire area of Sydney and the saying is plastered across billboards and signage accompanied by pictures of the club’s heroes.

What originated as a rhetorical question posed by senior players in the inner sanctum during a team truth-telling session, has grown to become their slogan and de facto marketing tagline.

While it’s been pilloried in some quarters as corny and passive, to those that matter, the 17 players who will take on North Queensland in Friday’s preliminary final, it makes an important point.

“People see these other sides are doing really well because they have your Thurstons, your Taumalolos, your Cronks, your Smiths, you’ve got that Canberra side that is just rolling,” says Sharks fullback Ben Barba.

“I just don’t see why it can’t be us.

“It would be unreal for this area.”

“It started creeping in when we started going on that (15-game) winning run, everyone started saying ‘they should lose this next game’. So we sort of said ‘why can’t we keep winning?’.

“Nothing says we can’t win it.

“It stuck with us.”

So here are the Sharks, one game away from a grand final,

Dragons rule out Foran St George Illawarra have moved quickly to shut down talk of troubled NRL star Kieran Foran joining the club, leaving the Warriors and Canterbury as his most likely destinations in 2017.

After 50 years without a premiership, losing their first grand final appearance in 1973, drawing with Manly in the 1978 decider and then losing the replay three days later, winning the 1988 minor premiership and then going out in straight sets, falling short in the 1997 Super League final – Sharks diehards have had to wear a lifetime of heartache and Harold Holt jokes.

“Why can’t we do it?

“They’ve been minor premiers, they’ve made grand finals.

“It’s just something different,”

“We believe we can do it.

“It’s just twisting the words – I believe we can do it.”

So Shane Flanagan has them believing and in recent weeks the coach has been bringing in some of the club’s greats to address the players and instill in them the depth of their passion that comes with half a century of falling short.

He invited the likes of former halfback and Rothmans Medal winner Barry Russell, who spoke of his lifetime of regrets at not doing that little bit extra to win the club’s maiden title.

“They’ve come in and they’ve

been really passionate.

“I think it’s put a bit of passion into the boys and it’s stuck in them,” prop Matt Prior said. “(Russell) just said he wishes he could go back and just could’ve done something a little bit more, done something better, because he feels like he’s regretted that moment ever since.

“That’s coming from a bloke who’s 50 years old and still looks back.

“It resonates with us, we don’t want to be in that position in 20 years thinking ‘what if we had done this?’.

“We don’t want to be like that.”

So why not Cronulla?

Target Coote at your peril says Brasher Former North Queensland fullback Tim Brasher believes Cronulla have made a huge error by saying they will target current Cowboys No.1 Lachlan Coote.

The Sharks earlier vowed to test Coote in Friday night’s NRL preliminary final at Allianz Stadium after the North Queensland custodian’s error-riddled display last Friday night against Brisbane.

Brasher admitted Coote almost cost North Queensland their title defence in their elimination semi-final.

“Before Origin this year I was backing Lachlan over Matt Moylan,” he said.

“He’s got a great kicking game that takes the pressure off (Johnathan) Thurston and his positional play is the best of all the fullbacks.

“Coote is a fullback who turns up at the right spot at the right time.”

Brasher believes Cronulla should be concerned that North Queensland still found a way to win against Brisbane despite Coote’s shocker.

“His crucial mistakes there could have cost them the game, but they got over it,” he said.

Innes chasing clean sweep The withdrawal of Kawi from the Gr.1 Livamol Classic won’t prevent his regular rider Leith Innes from a crack at a Hawke’s Bay carnival first.

Having partnered Allan Sharrock’s star to victory in the opening two legs of the Triple Crown, Innes is now in line to become the only jockey to claim all three titles at Hastings in the same year.

Rasa Lila’s co-trainer Julia Ritchie has confirmed that Innes, who won the Gr.2 Travis Stakes and the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes on the mare last season, will be reunited with the daughter of Darci Brahma in the Livamol on October 1.

She is currently favourite for the feature following her bold resuming run for third in the Windsor Park Plate.

“She came home in a very fast last 600 metres,” said Ritchie, who prepares Rasa Lila with Steven Ramsay.

“It was always going to be difficult being fresh-up in a Group One and Allan Sharrock says Kawi is the best horse he’s ever

The state of the going will be the least of her worries with Meritaggio, who takes a major step back in class in the Gregory Equine 1600 after unsuccessfully taking on the Gr.3 Merial Metric Mile last time out.

“She was outclassed, but she went so well in the Interprovincial that we had to have a crack at black type,” Ritchie said.

Gallen fit to play Paul Gallen has declared he will be “100 per cent fit” for Cronulla’s preliminary final against North Queensland on Friday. Gallen missed the Sharks’ qualifying final win over Canberra with a back injury a fortnight ago, and has at times struggled to get out of his car since pulling up lame from a training session. And while coach Shane Flanagan cleared him on Sunday to return for the mustwin grand final qualifier, Gallen has confirmed he won’t carry any injury concerns. “If nothing goes wrong between now and the game I will be 100 per cent fit.”

Schumacher can’t walk Michael Schumacher still remains unable to walk almost three years after a serious ski accident, according to his family’s lawyer. The F1 legend’s family is suing German magazine, Bunte, who published an article claiming the seven-time world champion could walk a few steps. Bunte’s report is said to have quoted a friend of Schumacher’s who claimed: “Michael is very thin. But he can once again walk a little with the help of his therapists. He manages to make a couple of steps.”

Isla Russell’s exceptional run of form has continued after collecting a silver medal at the Oceania Karate Championships

in New Caledonia recently.

Russell’s latest exploits continued a string of exceptional performances.

Before then Russell won two gold medals and a bronze at the Canterbury Westland Karate Championships in Christchurch in June.

More funding for paras Paralympic New Zealand officials are optimistic they can present a strong argument for increased funding when they meet the Government sports funding agency. They compete alongside the able-bodied sports organisations in their quest for financial support to match their plans for the next four years. Some of those sports also must set aside a chunk of the money they are given for their paralympic athletes. New Zealand exceeded their target for the Paralympics, finishing with 21, three more than their objective.
