Ashburton Hospital is to become a rural health academic centre that will provide training for rural hospital medicine services and support teams from around New Zealand.

The home-grown charity Advance Ashburton, in conjunction with the Mackenzie Foundation, announced yesterday that it would be investing $450,000 ($315,000 from the Advance Ashburton Charitable Foundation and $135,000 from the Mackenzie Foundation) over a three-year period to establish the centre.

This will see a clinical lead, senior nursing lead and research position created at

the hospital. The project is being developed in conjunction with the Canterbury District Health Board and the University of Otago.

Advance Ashburton trustee Joanne Taylor said the project had been under development for some time and having it signed off was a huge vote of confidence in Ashburton Hospital’s future.

“It will attract specialists to our hospital and we’ll have training models for junior doctors. We’ll get good quality registrars and, on the nursing side, this is very important.”

An integral part of the training programme was the purchase by Advance of Ashburton of two simulators, that came

with a significant price tag which has been met by one of Advance Ashburton’s donors.

“They’re very life-like. They breathe and they’ll even make noises.

“This will allow the hospital to train all of our first responders to accidents.

It’s fantastic for Mid Canterbury, it puts us on the map and we’ll train rural and medical specialists from all round New Zealand.

“We’ll be the rural medical academic centre for New Zealand.”

Wet weather not lingering Rain yesterday helped replenish parched soils around Mid Canterbury, but the wet stuff will be gone by the time Labour weekend kicks off.

Around 18mm fell across the district, where soil moisture levels are much drier than usual at this time of year.

The Metservice predicts high cloud on Sunday for Methven’s annual rodeo, with holidaymakers enjoying another sunny day on Monday before a front bringing more rain or showers moves over the country on Tuesday.

Meteorologist Stephen Glassey said a spell of dry weather was on the cards across the country for the long weekend.

Showers are expected to clear by lunch-time today.

While holidaymakers will be pleased, more rain is needed to make up the soil moisture deficit – about 470mm of rain has fallen this year and there are already irrigation restrictions on

the Ashburton and Rangitata Rivers.

NIWA says yesterday’s rain was beneficial; more rain forecast next week will likely prevent dry regions in Canterbury from getting worse and may even lead to improved soil moisture.

Authorities have warned that three successive dry winters have resulted in very low recharge of groundwater and irrigators will have to keep an eye on restrictions or adaptive management conditions of their consent which mean they can’t abstract when groundwater levels are low. There are about 100 groundwater consents in the district with adaptive conditions.

Irrigation New Zealand has already run two workshops in Mid Canterbury to promote irrigation efficiency and Environment Canterbury will employ two students over summer to help farmers “bucket test” their systems.

Picnic time for College students

By Noah Graham From Mexico to Japan to Germany and back again there were several countries represented through cuisine at Ashburton College’s annual lunchtime International Food Festival yesterday.

Students crammed into the College’s auditorium to escape the rain and have a bite of a different culture’s cuisine and enjoy a variety of performances.

The food available for the students included sushi, churros, frankfurters, butter chicken and a variety of Maori delicacies and, whilst eating, students were able to watch kapa haka and the school Filipino dance group New Generation.

Ashburton College head of cultural committee and student Lucy Clough said the event was “amazing” and had raised a

profit of $245 from food sold.

“We sold out of all our food. It was a wonderful lunchtime.”

Ashburton College cultural committee member and student Isser Mangubat said the day was a good way to represent the diverse and multiple cultures that make up New Zealand.

Clough said the reaction from students was “great” and she could not have done it without her seven other cultural community members and the support from Ashburton College’s language teachers.

She said the food was donated or discounted by local Ashburton restaurants which made it possible.

The behaviour of the students was “really good” and the reason they had so many students inside was to shelter from the rain, Clough said.

“It’s a big vote of confidence in Ashburton Hospital. David Meates (chief executive CDHB) confirmed that Ashburton is here to stay. As soon as the hospital’s redevelopment is completed the centre will be set up.”

The training base will be known as the Rural Health Academic Centre (RHAC) and will be a vital cog in rural medicine specialty training, said clinical director rural medicine, Dr John Lyons.

Groups of doctors will work at the level three hospital and undergo specialist training. The simulators will now be an integral

part of that training.

Currently there are 70 rural medicine specialists in training nationally and with the two simulators on board the option of a rotation at Ashburton will now become highly sought after, he said.

“Ashburton will be the first rural based simulation centre so it will become very important in the context of rural training in the South Island. This project is catalytic.”

Ashburton’s simulators (funded

by Jeanette and the late Neil Sinclair) were at the top end when it came to being as life-like as possible, Lyons said.

Traditionally such teaching tools had been available in larger universities or training hospitals; the unique aspect of this project is it was rural based, he said.

The simulators will also offer new training options for specialist rural nurses, said Ashburton director of nursing Jane Brosnahan.

“One of the exciting things being looked at is having courses where doctors and nurses can train on trauma together; this will be available to anyone in the South Island.”

The first intake of trainee doctors and nurses arrive next month.

The rural academic centre will be funded through investments made by Advance Ashburton using community bequests and donations in conjunction with the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation whose funds were left to the community by the late Mackenzie brothers of Ealing.

Juniors to show support for semi-final match When the whistle blows to signal the start of tomorrow’s Lochore Cup rugby semi-final match at the Ashburton Showgrounds, the action will all be on-field but prior to kick off there’ll be some special action for junior rugby supporters.

The Guardian has partnered with the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union to stage a junior supporters’ competition that’s all about young rugby enthusiasts dressing up in green and gold. There’ll be face painters on hand to put the finishing touches to the youngsters’ outfits and Guardian sports expert Steve Devereux will be selecting the best dressed on the day.

Union publicity officer Angela Cushnie said the only rules for junior rugby supporters is to dress in green and gold and to be in front of the grandstand by 2pm.

“This is about making it a fun day and a family day and we’ll have music and games for the kids before the rugby starts,” she said.

The lead in to the semi’s match will start today with plenty of green and gold banners, streamers and decorations dotted around town.

“We’ll be leaving the town in no doubt there’s a rugby match on,’ Cushnie said.

Winners of the best dressed competition will receive prize packs sponsored by the Guardian.

Ash scattering not off limits

While some local authorities are taking a tough line on where human ash is scattered, Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin believes common sense is the best way to handle such a sensitive issue.

The council doesn’t encourage ash scattering in its parks and on its gardens, but it is not about to actively ban the practice, he said.

“We’re certainly aware that ash scattering has been done in the past and there’s probably quite a bit that’s been scattered but it’s

not something we’re looking at actively banning.”

Writing rules around where ash could be scattered would be a futile exercise, he said.

“You could have all the legislation in the world but you couldn’t really stop it.”

The Timaru District Council does not allow unapproved scattering of human ash and it bans it from high profile areas in its parks.

Several other local authorities require written permission to be given before ash can be scattered.

In the Ashburton Domain, Askin said he was aware that the rose garden area was used, probably more than other areas but there were no plans to put this area off limits.

The council has plans to develop an extension to the Ashburton Cemetery and this will include a nature area for natural burials (non-embalmed bodies) and where ash can be scattered, he said.

The existing cemetery is running low on space but will be able to cope with demand until the extension opens in 2018.

The project is now moving through the resource consent stage and when this is completed design work will be developed.

Funds have been tagged in the council’s long-term plan next year for the project.

In terms of space in the existing cemetery, while there might appear to be a large number of plots still available, many of those had already been sold.

Buying a plot in advance of death was quite common, Askin said. Currently a plot in the Ashburton Cemetery will cost forward planners $1250.

Song should not have been banned A satirical song which mocked Prime Minister John Key and the National Party should not have been banned from broadcast during the 2014 election campaign, the Court of Appeal has ruled.

In a just-released decision, the court said singer and songwriter Darren Watson’s song Planet Key and its animated music video by Jeremy Jones did not qualify as election programmes or advertising.

Watson and Jones were not representing any political party or vested interest when they made the video, the court said, and were “simply expressing their own political views”.

Ahead of the 2014 general election, the Electoral Commission blocked television and radio broadcasts of the song, saying that it breached electoral rules.

The Electoral Commission’s intervention came after an inquiry by a Hamilton radio station, which wanted to play Planet Key as part of a political programme.

The commission and Watson later sought a declaratory judgement from the High Court, which ruled against the commission in April last year, saying that it had imposed limits on the right to freedom of expression.

The Court of Appeal said it agreed with the High Court’s decision, albeit for different reasons.

The commission said it welcomed the Court of Appeal’s ruling.

It had sought the court’s view to get clarification about the matter and how it should interpret election advertisements and programmes.

Because the commission’s appeal was in the interests of clarifying the law, it had agreed to contribute to Watson and Jones’ costs.

Any advertising in New Zealand which may encourage people to vote, not vote, or which favours a party or candidate must carry a promoter statement and follow rules on spending during an election period.

Holidays add to traffic congestion The traffic congestion through Ashburton that is a hallmark of holiday weekends has prompted the New Zealand Transport Agency to put State Highway One through Ashburton on its alerts list for Labour weekend.

It is warning motorists to expect short delays around the Ashburton River bridge saying that roadworks associated with the installation of traffic lights at South Street could create a slow-down in traffic.

In an effort to keep traffic flowing however, both lanes will be open and traffic management will be reduced during the weekend.

The agency has also issued a number of alerts for roads around Canterbury where there could be delays.

These include north and south of Christchurch on Friday afternoon from about 3pm, around Waimate, because of the Waimate 50 Motorsport festival, at Winchester – during a rodeo at the showgrounds, around Kaikoura –

because of a family hikoi with support teams and through Fairlie on Saturday during the 150 year parade. To help motorists plan their travel, NZTA has a Labour weekend hotspots map on its website that pinpoints areas of traffic congestion.

Police are also upping their vigilance over the weekend, focusing

on checks to ensure vehicle occupants are safely belted in.

They’re running a ‘Buckle up buttercup’ campaign, which highlights seat belts as increasing chances of surviving a crash by up to 50 per cent.

“Typically, each year around 60 people killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts, however last

year that number jumped to over 90, says Dave Cliff, Assistant Commissioner, Road Policing.

“As of October 12 this year, 71 people have been killed while not wearing a seatbelt, which is a real concern with over two months left in the year.”

For some people wearing a seatbelt was not a habit and as a consequence far too many people are being needlessly killed and injured in crashes, Cliff said.

“We need the public’s help to take the ‘buckle up buttercup’ theme on-board. Seatbelts save lives. It’s that simple.”

Policed will have a highly visible and active presence on the road over the weekend, focusing on high risk driving behaviour using a mixture of enforcement activities.

First meeting for new trust board Ashburton Trust board members met yesterday for the first time since the October 8 elections.

As per previous long holiday weekends, speed cameras will be positioned in high risk crash areas and set to enforce a reduced speed threshold of 4km/h over Labour Day weekend.

During Labour Day weekend 2015, five people died and 21 people were seriously injured.

“We want people to have fun on their well-deserved break and come back in one piece with great memories.

“There has been a high number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads this year, leaving a devastating impact on a number of families and communities.

“We want to stop that from happening to others this Labour Day Weekend but we cannot do it alone, we need the public’s help.”

Court for ponzi scheme man A man has appeared in Christchurch District Court accused of obtaining $8.3 million in a Ponzi scheme that prosecutors say may have caught out hundreds of people.

The Serious Fraud Office says Jimmie McNicholl has been charged with one count of obtaining by deception. A second person has been charged, but has yet to appear in court.

It says that Arena Capital Limited obtained registration as a financial services provider by deception.

Between May 2014 and May 2015 it is then accused of operating as a facade in which it appeared to offer a foreign exchange trading platform to investors.

Arena was liquidated on July 24.

Both individuals are due to appear before Christchurch District Court on November 17.

A 40-year celebration for tiny church

The tiny church that sits at the centre of the Tinwald Domain’s Plains Railway and Preservation site is about to celebrate a special birthday.

While the church itself is about 138 years old, it’s about to celebrate a modern birthday, its 40th as a well-used and much-loved part of the Plains.

The gracious wooden church for many years served as a place of worship for the Waterton com-

munity. It opened its doors to the growing rural village in 1878 and for almost a century it met the spiritual needs of the area’s Anglican community.

When the church of St Philip and St James was built, Waterton was a thriving village. At its peak its population high was 235. Its cemetery opened in 1881 and by 1888 it had its own town hall, along with a store, post office, library, hotel and school.

Time, improved transport and rural drift to larger urban centres

were all Waterton’s enemy and today there is only a cemetery where a small village once stood.

As the Plains historic precinct developed in the Tinwald Domain, its promoters looked for a church they could relocate to become part of an historic village.

Waterton fitted the bill and in July, 1976, just five years short of its 100th birthday, the church was lifted from its foundations, loaded on to a truck and moved to its new home.

It joined the Chertsey Railway

Station, relocated the year before as the founding buildings in the Plains village.

The Guardian archives show that reporter Ray McCausland was there to record the church’s journey.

He described it as a military type operation involving “power board linesmen, traffic officers, farmers, removal men and others”.

The removal was undertaken as an Ashburton South Rotary Project and the old church was followed to its new home by minister

Reverend L. F. Allison with the operation carried out under the eye of removal expert Mr T. R. Begbie.

McCausland described the move as “a very tricky operation”.

Six sets of power wires and three stay wires had to be removed so the church could pass.

The Waterton Church’s 40th birthday as a Plains Village resident will be celebrated on Sunday with a service at 2pm. This will be conducted as part of the Plains Railway’s 45th birthday celebrations.

Chocolate butter to hit shelves and waistlines Lewis Road Creamery is launching a chocolate butter in the first collaboration with Whittaker’s since its up-market chocolate milk sent Kiwis into a sugar-laden frenzy in 2014.

The four-year-old Aucklandbased company said the chocolate butter, which will be stocked in the two main supermarket

chains and leading speciality food stores, is the first of its kind – combining Lewis Road butter with Whittaker’s 72 per cent Dark Ghana chocolate and sunflower oil to achieve spreadability.

Lewis Road’s product range already includes butter, cream, fresh milk, flavoured milk, ice cream, and bread and it has two

other dairy-related innovations it hopes to launch before Christmas.

Lewis Road founder and majority shareholder Peter Cullinane said the idea for chocolate butter emerged over an afternoon tea of French pastries at the company’s kitchen table.

“The French, who know a thing

or two about butter, chocolate, and pastries, have always had a soft spot for pain au chocolat and it got us thinking.”

The chocolate butter will go up against the long-established hazelnut spread Nutella which has been in the market since the 1940s.

Mr Cullinane said other so-

called chocolate spreads are loaded with palm oil and sugar and no real chocolate.

“This is New Zealand’s answer to that. We have kept it as simple as possible.”

The company will consider exporting chocolate butter if demand in New Zealand proves strong enough.

Women boost trail-riding skills

Dogs alert to death Police believe a woman whose body was found on the banks of the Waikato River on Wednesday was walking her dogs. She was identified as 23-year-old Beth Christina Winfield of Hamilton.

Police were continuing their enquiries and are still treating her death as unexplained. Dogs appear to have alerted members of the public to the woman’s body near the Waikato riverbank. The body was discovered by a member of the public off an area of the river bank.

About 30 women who love their mountainbikes took the chance to improve their core riding skills this week.

The skills session was run by the Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club and is the first of three planned before the summer riding season gets into full swing.

On Wednesday night, near the Ashburton River bridge, club members took new and novice riders through the core skills of riding trails.

Session two on November 2 will be in Methven, when riders will cover skills needed for riding downhill.

It is aimed at riders ready to move off the flat and beginner trails on to intermediate tracks.

The third session on November 16 will introduce riders to the Mt Hutt Bike Park. It will be a chance to try out some of the park’s intermediate trails.

The night includes a shuttle ride to the start and local women riders will be on hand to encourage and guide riders on the way down.

Armour has been mountain bike riding for 25 years and said the Ashburton District had some of the best tracks in Canterbury, and the local mountainbike club was keen to increase the number of people using them.

Armour said riding downhill on the tracks required a few more skills but was more exciting than descending via the skifield road.

The new skills the riders would learn over the three sessions would teach them bikehandling techniques to tackle

A mother has admitted neglect after drink-driving with her 3-yearold son on her lap. Tahi Mahu, 34, plead guilty to a charge of neglect of a child under 18 when she appeared in court yesterday. She also pleaded guilty to driving in a dangerous manner, driving without an appropriate licence and driving with excess breath alcohol. Mahu was more than three times the legal limit when she drove down Great South Rd in Ngaruawahia at about 5pm on August 7, with her preschool-aged son on her lap.

When police pulled her over they found Mahu’s 3-year-old son sitting unrestrained on her lap and clutching the steering wheel.

O

ne of the best pieces of news we’ve had in a long time about Ashburton Hospital became public fodder last night.

Details were released about a new rural health academic centre that is being established at the hospital and this has the potential to turn Ashburton into New Zealand’s number one training place for rural medicine specialists.

And best of all, this isn’t just a pie in the sky dream. It’s real and it’s happening. The first rotation of rural specialist doctors and nurses arrive next month and they’ll keep coming month after month, year after year.

While we are not the only level 3 hospital available offering the rural specialty, we are the only one with two high price ticket simulators, provide life-like models that can be used in training.

None of this would have happened without the drive of one organisation, Advance Ashburton.

Through its charitable foundation the organisation invests donations and bequests from the community and uses the interest generated to do good things for the community.

The rural medicine project has been a joint funding venture between Advance Ashburton and the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation. Between them they’re pouring in $450,000 over three years and they’ve also funded the purchase of two life-like training mannequins, making Ashburton Hospital the only rural training hospital in New Zealand to offer this facility.

Quite clearly, Ashburton Hospital has come of age.

For years our hospital has been under attack on all quarters.

We’ve battled down sizings, down gradings and worst of all we’ve feared loss of services. In recent years, however, life has stabilised somewhat. This new project makes it a national leader and must cement its role in the greater medical training picture.

The importance of this training project shouldn’t be under estimated. We’ve been trying for a long time to find a niche market, one that would not only ensure the hospital could provide care for its community but one that would make it an important cog in the national health wheel.

Now we’ve found it. Who better to be a rural training base than Ashburton? We have a largely rebuilt hospital, a thriving community and for younger doctors we have big city Christchurch just up the road.

YOUR VIEW Freezing works There’s two sides to the story regarding Fairton freezing works problems.

For the past two seasons we have been offered a six-week contract by the company to do the bobby calves at normal rate in the weekends for eight hours, instead of the rate and a half that we would normally do.

We would have on average, per man, lost about $600 dollars in that time.

Because of the scaremongering of the union to tell us to vote no, we have lost five-and-a-half months’ work in the past two seasons.

This was not going to affect our two-year collective agreement with the company.

The gutless people that email the Guardian aren’t telling the whole story.

time low; it’s a sinking ship and we were offered a lifeline.

We were offered a deal that was not as bad as made out to be. The problem is there’s a lot of workers out there that are on their last legs and just want to get paid redundancy, not caring about the others. Selfish, I say.

I’ve been out at Fairton for 26 years and am far from being a company man – some people would vouch for that.

If there’s not a changing of the guard in Fairton’s union the place is doomed.

Both parties are as bad as each other.

Mt Somers Garden Ramble What a wonderful fundraiser we had for our Old Post Office Library last Sunday.

Special thanks must go to Roy Wilson and Frances and Don Stanton for opening their extensive gardens.

The girls were flat-out making Devonshire teas and, thanks to the beautiful day, it was lovely to see everyone sitting in my garden enjoying themselves.

The library was admired by many visitors and the girls on the plant stall with our special Mt Peel lillies did a roaring trade.

Thank you to all my other neighbours for allowing people on to their properties, to all our volunteer helpers and most of all, YOU, the people who supported us on the day.

We made a very generous $3000 which will go to the maintenance and running costs of the library.

What a great community we live in.

or those people who know the “Hooper boys” you’ll know already we had an awesome time together in Australia.

Not that we would ever admit it to each other, we get on really well and when we get together it is always fun.

We had a long weekend of mickey-taking and laughing with the odd beer thrown in the mix.

One highlight of the weekend, which makes me snigger out loud even now when I think about it, was the beach race incident.

Somehow a challenge of a running race resulted from Greg taking the mick out of Mark about the screws in his hip (from a fall from a ladder), perhaps the home brew had something to do with it. Unbelievably they lined up together on the beach the next morning and My Uncle Grant said to me, “We should be filming this”.

I’m pretty sure he was talking about a close finish and the need for technology to decide a winner. If we had filmed it, I think we would have had a viral clip on our hands.

Ten metres into the race, neck and neck, Greg decided to push Mark. All he achieved though was unbalancing himself, which caused him to face plant into the sand in a manner that had Grant and I in fits of laughter. Not only us, there were groups of people on the beach pointing and laughing also.

This is where things get funnier, he dusted himself off and demanded a re-run. Once we all

stopped laughing and Greg finished sledging Mark, they lined up again.

Eight metres into this race Greg pulled up with a pulled calf muscle. Hilarious! He spent the rest of the weekend limping.

As you can imagine, we gave him plenty of encouragement and support.

He still thinks he can beat the “cripple” and has demanded another race the next time we visit.

I can’t wait!

While in Coolum and also North Lakes in Brisbane I kept an eye out for ideas that could help rejuvenate our CBD in Ashburton.

Nothing stood out, but on my return I came across this and wondered could it be the sort of “out of the square” idea we need.

A farm in Albany, Oregon is offering yoga classes … with goats.

It all started when a yoga instructor asked if she could host a class at No Regrets Farm. Six of the farm’s goats invited themselves to the class, and Goat Yoga was born. And if that sounds weird, consider that the wait-list for the programme is now 500

people deep.

It may be because goats seem to add a level of happiness and fun to what is sometimes thought of as strict meditation.

After all, it’s tough to be sad or depressed when there are baby goats jumping around.

The only downside to doing yoga with goats? The animals tend not to hold their poop until after class and they sometimes try to eat the yoga mats.

Although I’m sure if the classes were held on the green down East Street, then the goats would be too busy eating

the grass to worry about your yoga mat.

The poop would save the council from fertilising too. Not sure how exactly you’d stop the occasional head-butt to the butt though.

Trump, Clinton face off again Threatening to up-end a fundamental pillar of American democracy, Donald Trump refused to say yesterdday that he will accept the results of next month’s election if he loses to Hillary Clinton.

The Democratic nominee declared Trump’s resistance “horrifying.”

Trump had spent the days leading up to the third and final presidential debate warning voters that the election would be “rigged”.

Asked whether he would accept the outcome if Clinton emerges victorious, he said, “I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense.”

The Republican National Committee immediately disavowed Trump’s statement.

There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and election officials across the country have denied and denounced Trump’s charges.

Trump’s assertions raise the prospect that millions of his supporters may not accept the results on November 8 if he loses, thrusting the nation into uncharted territory.

Isis leaders fleeing Mosul, US claims There are signs that leaders from self-styled Islamic State (Isis) have fled Mosul as Iraqi forces close in on the city, the US military says.

“Make no doubt the Iraqi security forces have the momentum,” Gen Gary Volesky said.

The Iraqi army has been moving towards Mosul from the south, while their Kurdish allies have been approaching from the east.

There are thought to be up to 5000 Isis fighters still in the city.

“We’ve seen movement out of Mosul; we’ve got indications that leaders have left,” said Gen Volesky, giving his assessment of the situation.

But he did not specify who had fled, nor did he say where they had gone to.

The whereabouts of Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi are unknown. Some reports say he is in Mosul; others say he has fled the northern Iraqi city.

It is possible that any fight-

ers leaving the city had simply been going to man frontline areas, which still lie beyond the outskirts, the BBC’s Middle East analyst Alan Johnston says.

Nobody has any doubt that a hardcore of Isis militants will stay in the city and fight for it, perhaps very fiercely indeed, our correspondent adds.

Gen Volesky, who heads the land component of the US-led coalition fighting Isis, said that foreign fighters are likely to

form the bulk of the force who will hold out. “A lot of foreigner fighters we expect to stay, because they’re not going to be able to exfiltrate as easily some of the local fighters, or the local leadership, so we expect there to be a fight,” he said.

The charity Save the Children claims that 5000 people from the conflict area have fled to a refugee camp over the border in Syria in the last 10 days, with another 1000 waiting at the border.

There’s a new Willy Wonka movie in the works. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to Willy Wonka from the Roald Dahl Estate. The movie will reportedly be focused solely on Willy Wonka and his early adventures. If it goes ahead, it will be the third movie about the eccentric candy maker after 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp.

Mockers reunite for NZ tour Kiwi rock’n’roll legends The Mockers have reunited after 30 years for an eight-date summer tour. The Mockers – known for their hits Forever Tuesday Morning, Swear It’s True, One Black Friday and My Girl Thinks She’s Cleopatra – have travelled from around the country and across the world to reform their lineup of singer Andrew Fagan, guitarist Brett Adams, bassist Geoff Hayden and keyboardist Tim Wedde. They will be joined by Phoenix Foundation drummer Chris O’Conner as The Mockers honour Steve Thorpe, the band’s original drummer who passed away in 1986.

The tour takes the rockers to Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Dunedin and Nelson from January 19 through to January 29. Tickets are available from midday, October 25.

Tostee found not guilty of murder Gold Coast man Gable Tostee has been found not guilty of murdering Wellington woman Warriena Wright.

After a trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court a jury of six men and six women have just returned a verdict.

They have found Tostee not guilty of murder and the lesser charge of manslaughter, which was also an option for them.

Tostee and Wright’s families were both in tears following the verdict.

Wright’s family embraced tearfully in the courtroom.

Tostee also embraced his family and shook hands with his legal team.

Gable Tostee Tostee then left the courtroom to another room with his family.

The jurors have been deliberating since early Monday afternoon on whether Tostee

murdered Wright in August 2014.

Tostee and Wright had connected on dating app Tinder and hours after they met in person Wright died after plunging from Tostee’s 14th floor apartment balcony.

Tostee pleaded not guilty to murder.

Tostee and his lawyer appeared before media in front of the courthouse following the verdict.

Tostee said nothing but his lawyer said his client was “looking forward to getting on with his life”.

The verdict comes after a juror’s Instagram post almost

derailed proceedings.

The juror had posted a photo identifying her as being at the court and mentioning she was involved in deliberations.

After the verdict, the judge said the defence had asked for the jury to be discharged because of the Instagram post.

He declined but told the jury he was disappointed by the conduct.

The Tostee jury entered its fourth day of deliberations yesterday.

There were few clues as to what the 12 ordinary members of the public selected to hear the case had been grappling with.

Maddox turns back on Brad Brad Pitt’s son Maddox Jolie-Pitt has reportedly turned his back on him following their alleged altercation on a plane last month. The 15-year-old bailed on a scheduled visit with Pitt because he “doesn’t really see himself” as the actor’s son, sources told Us Weekly. The teen reportedly stayed with mum Angelina Jolie while his siblings Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, met with Pitt for their first supervised visit on October 8. “Maddox is very close with Angie,” a Jolie confidante told the US magazine. “He doesn’t really see himself as Brad’s son.” Another Jolie source said: “Maddox never wants to see Brad again.”

The land owned by Henry Norcross is in this bigger 42.26ha block in west Auckland. down 10 per cent for his 6.8ha, buying from an acquaintance who smoothed the way by allowing Norcross to pay off the rest.

land near Westgate and Norcross said there was only one reason why it was so valuable.

Closer to home the market has had plenty of corporate news flow to drive it as we enter the AGM season. Tegel Group held its AGM this week and faced many questions from shareholders over recent share price weakness. Management attributed the declines largely to the NZX50’s weakness and the upcoming IPO of the company’s closest rival Ingham’s.

expectations which were for the CPI to remain unchanged for the quarter and up 0.1 per cent for the year.

Inflation is a hot topic for the RBNZ for determining monetary policy. When inflation came in ahead of expectations there was a small decrease in the markets expectation of a rate hike at the November meeting. However, the market is currently pricing in a more than 80 per cent chance that there will be a rate hike at this meeting.

Also close to home was the latest Global Dairy Trade Auction.

In the lead up to the auction, futures were pricing in another small decline, as we saw in the previous auction. However, the index rose 1.4 per cent marking the fifth rise from the last six auctions.

Whole milk powder, a key product group for New Zealand farmers also rose, gaining 2.9 per cent. Whole milk powder prices have fallen in the last two auctions although this rise has seen prices nudging a 52 week high.

The third and final US presidential debate was also held this week. Heading into the debate Hillary Clinton the Democratic candidate was leading in the polls, ahead of Republican nominee Donald Trump. The lead up to the November 8 election has been one of the most watched and followed ever.

The market week in review t has been a busy week for markets and there is still plenty more excitement to come over the next few weeks.

Markets have seen some positivity this week with the exception of the New Zealand market which has lagged its global peers.

For the month to date, the NZX50 is down 5.22 per cent while the S&P500 is down only 1.11 per cent.

The sell down that we have seen since the start of October has largely been driven by profit taking by investors and the unwinding of the yield trade.

It is important to note that the NZX50 has had an outstanding run and that the index is still more than 10 per cent higher for the year to date and over the past five years the index has more than doubled.

Reporting season in the US is ramping and will have its busiest week next week. Expectations in the lead up to the reporting season were for another decline in earnings, making it the fifth consecutive quarter of earnings decline.

However, the energy sector is largely to blame for this, and earnings are expected to decline by 65 per cent in the sector. When excluding the energy and real estate sectors (expected to see a 25 per cent decline in earnings), the S&P500 is expected to see an increase of 3.1 per cent.

One of the stand-outs from the reporting season so far has been American Express. The company reported better earnings per share of $1.20, far better than expectations of 97 cents per share.

Back in 1985, “proud westie” Henry Norcross paid $450,000 for his 6.8ha slice of rural paradise, today it is valued at about $30 million.

He is one of 10 owners of a huge west Auckland site who have grouped together to sell their $150 million-plus farmland for a vast new housing estate.

Norcross, a businessman whose family have been in the west since the 1920s, retired wealthy at the age of only 49.

He said there was a lesson in his decision to invest in the rural section of land, which is now valued at $30 million.

“It’s all very well to invest in what I would call over-priced housing, but if you have the opportunity to, buy vacant land further out from the city.

“Sure it’s location, location, location, but it’s also land, land, land, land!” said the Aucklander who now lives at Orewa.

His 15 grandchildren and four children will be the beneficiaries of the sale.

■ DRIVING MR ANDY

History does repeat E

arlier this year a young chap who has a keen interest in history spoke with me about an assignment he was completing.

His task was to justify his contention that Hitler was an evil man.

It wasn’t too difficult for him to provide evidence to that effect, but during the discussion I couldn’t help suggesting that maybe Hitler wasn’t totally bad, after all he was to a large degree responsible for the introduction of Volkswagens, or people’s cars.

Over the past three months I’ve spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel of a Volkswagen and often thought of that conversation.

The particular Volkswagen is a far cry from the people’s car introduced to the German population prior to World War Two. It’s a Touareg - an SUV with a powerful, smooth and quiet turbo-charged V6 diesel motor, which has sporty characteristics in both its performance and handling.

The Touareg is well appointed, very comfortable and quiet.

Because the driving position is excellent it’s easy to feel immediately at home behind the wheel.

It’s almost impossible to detect changes when the eight-speed automatic (with optional manual mode) transmission moves between gears and the revs are very low at the legal speed limit.

I wouldn’t know how much the revs increase over that speed (editor’s note – yeah right!)

Purely for reporting purposes during a solo trip I tried the manual option and found it not only changes smoothly but is also fun.

Good fun actually!

I may have forgotten to mention that to the owner.

The Volkswagen’s economy is helped by the very effective stop/start engine management system.

It’s been a wonderful experience driving the Volkswagen, partly because it’s such an impressive vehicle, but mostly having the company of my passenger, who is its owner.

And that leads to an explanation of why I’ve had a role of driver/chauffeur over the past three months.

A role which, by the way, is likely to end today which means I’ll be made redundant.

This will in fact be redundancy for the second time.

Redundancy followed after a similar role also involving the same owner and passenger many years ago.

Back in 1992 – 24 years ago – I spent around three months behind the wheel of a grey Mazda 626 which my friend owned back then.

It had a 2-litre four-cylinder motor and 5-speed manual gearbox and he and his wife had matching cars.

They haven’t owned all that many cars in the interim, tending to run their cars – especially the company vehicles – to quite high mileages, hence they have chosen good solid vehicles which they maintain very well.

My friend is a farm and business consultant, but his role has changed during the past 24 years.

Back in 1992 most of our travels were to farms; this time we’ve been to some farms, at least one of which we called at last time, but also to other places because my friend now has several

governance roles.

Just before I started the stint in the Mazda 24 years ago my friend had just bought his first cellphone.

Although it resembled a brick, it fitted in nicely between the front seats.

He saw the value of and adopted technology early on and has continued to look for and promote its use, so these days we have a few more gadgets on board and his mobile phone takes up hardly any space at all.

So we’ve gone from a smaller car with a large phone to a bigger car with a small phone.

The technology isn’t limited to communication devices the Touareg itself is loaded with it, but despite its spaciousness all the gauges, other driver information and controls are clearly visible and easily accessible.

On the first

day of my present role we met well known brothers and local builders Alistair and Robert Read who said: “We hope we are going to read about this escapade.”

Hence this story and I guess at this stage I should name my passenger.

He is Andy Macfarlane.

Those who know or know of Andy will be aware that during his career in agribusiness and other enterprises he has notched a huge list of achievements and is held in high regard by his peers and those he assists and advises.

Consequently the trips with him have been interesting, educational and informative.

The odd – sometimes quite odd – story has been exchanged, but of course what happens on tour remains on tour, so my lips are sealed.

This has been a case of history repeating itself even down to the weather.

Twenty-four years ago we were going to farms after a major snowstorm; co-incidentally it snowed on one of our first trips this time around.

Back then we witnessed wonderful examples of animal welfare, concern for the environment and commitment to sustainability.

This time around it’s obvious some practices and land use have changed, efficiencies have been possible, but the dedication of those on or concerned with the land is still the same, maybe even more so.

Something else is the same all these years on.

lunches, she did the same this time too.

And we have often enjoyed the wonderful hospitality for which farming people are renowned.

Andy’s Mazda 626 was a great workhorse and the Volkswagen is too, it’s equally at home on sealed and shingle roads or being driven around a farm.

The Volkswagen is certainly a very fitfor-purpose vehicle.

It rides smoothly in all situations which is good because of the reason I’ve been – as Roger Hart coined the phrase – Driving Mr Andy.

Andy suffered a broken back when picked up by a “dumper” wave while swimming in Hawaii.

It’s an incident he likens to a spear tackle in rugby.

For the past three months Andy has needed a brace, but typically he has seen the positive side: “I’m feeling happy because the alternative could have been far worse – I have restricted movement.”

Today it’s quite likely Andy’s specialist will allow him to go without the brace, his movement will no longer be restricted, and I’ll be made redundant from Driving Mr Andy.

Unfortunately accidents led to me Driving Mr Andy in 1992 as well.

Thankfully he recovered fully from the first one, and will again this time.

On both occasions Andy never let the injuries get the better of him, never complained and each time he has been nothing short of inspirational.

Several people have asked us both what we’ll do if history repeats in another 24 years’ time and we end up travelling together again.

If it does hopefully it won’t be for the same reason.

Andy’s response to me – “I could be pushing you around in a wheelchair” could be right!

My response to Andy – “Knowing how savvy you are you’ll probably have a driver-less car.”

Sort of glad he hasn’t already!

In this case redundancy is a good outcome, but Driving Mr Andy has been a great experience.

oger Hart has a wonderful way of describing the cars which he test drives.

His latest report on the Hyundai Elantra is no exception.

Often Roger picks up test vehicles in Christchurch, this was the case with the Elantra.

But on this occasion he was faced with the dilemma of having two vehicles to take to Christchurch – Hyundai wanted one taken through and Roger already had another test vehicle to return.

Roger is a clever and talented fellow, but driving two vehicles to Christchurch at the same time is beyond even his ability, so he enlisted my help and I got to drive a Hyundai i20.

The car I drove was brand new and while that was obvious from its appearance, which by the way is stylish, the car did not feel that it needed to be run in.

Its 1400cc motor, which drove through a smooth-changing and responsive automatic gearbox, revved freely and performed very well.

The i20 is the smallest sedan produced by Hyundai crew and while compact, the interior space did not

feel cramped and the driving position was comfortable.

Interior layout and finish is very good, with well positioned instruments and functional driver aids.

Because of its build quality, which has benefited immensely from the company’s involvement in the international rallying scene, the i20 feels sturdy.

My drive started in Tinwald before heading up State Highway 1 and ended by navigating through the Christchurch CBD. The i20 is nimble around town, good on the open road and coped well with bumpy earthquake-affected streets in Christchurch.

It was very responsive both at traffic lights and on passing lanes, making it easy to keep up with Roger who was leading the way in a much larger and more powerful vehicle.

I got out of the i20 feeling I would have enjoyed driving it further and for longer.

With their i20 Hyundai they have come up with an excellent vehicle which is a real contender in its segment of the market – sometimes referred to as the supermini class – that is worthy of serious consideration by buyers looking for a car of this size.

allmark MINI driving fun combined with zero tailpipe emissions.

With the introduction of the first plug-in hybrid model by the British premium brand, this will soon be a reality.

The series development process for this car has almost been completed. It features a combustion engine and an electric motor, enabling purely electric propulsion for the first time in a MINI. This marks the beginning of a new phase for MINI, and offers a glimpse into a future that is charged with excitement for MINI customers.

The first MINI plug-in hybrid model is not solely focused on efficiency, but uncompromising in pursuit of driving fun.

Everything also looks familiar in the cockpit. The start/stop button in the centre of the dashboard glows yellow instead of red. As usual, you simply press the button to start the car – this vehicle, however, remains silent as the hybrid model always starts in electric mode.

The rpm counter in the instrument cluster on the steering column has been replaced with a power display.

The hybrid MINI makes full use of the electric motor’s entire torque, which is available right from standstill, allowing for catapult-like acceleration.

Even after leaving the slower pace of the city, this vehicle maintains its zero-tailpipe emissions at motorway speeds. The high-voltage battery under the rear seats provides power for long-lasting electric driving.

AUTO eDRIVE standard mode permits speeds of up to 50 mph, whilst in MAX eDRIVE mode speeds of up to 78 mph are possible.

Above all, this hybrid MINI proves how precisely it handles when taking bends on the most exciting, twisting roads.

London show a sensation

T

he British capital’s biggest and best classic car spectacular – the London Classic Car Show – is growing again.

The 2017 event will embrace not one but two exciting exhibitions.

Now in its third year, the show – which will be held at ExCeL London from February 23-26 – will cover 40,000 square metres of exhibition space, up from 32,000 sq/m in 2016 and 18,000 sq/m at the inaugural show in 2015.

But with more than 700 stunning classic

cars on display, innovative features such as The Grand Avenue and Car Club Square and the brand new Historic Motorsport International to accommodate, every last centimetre will be needed.

Historic Motorsport International is an important new exhibition which incorporates a conference and will champion and celebrate historic motorsport.

HMI will have up to 100 historic competition cars for sale from leading specialist dealers with other exhibitors including engineers and preparers, organisers and

promoters, motorsport clubs, governing bodies, retailers and media owners.

Highlights of the London Classic Car Show, meanwhile, will include a ‘red sea’ of Ferraris, celebrating 70 years of road cars from the Prancing Horse.

Among the cars on show will be greats like the Daytona, F40 and F50.

As in previous years, other special displays will focus on classic icons from the past. Last time it was supercars and Group B rally cars. For 2017, the organisers are lining up two very different displays of

rarely seen mouth-watering machinery.

Another feature to make a popular return is The Grand Avenue, a ground-breaking all-action roadway running through the very centre of the show and along which some of the world’s greatest classic road and competition cars are driven.

It means The London Classic Car Show is no mere static exhibition but a living, breathing homage to the automobile … where else can you see Le Mans winners, Grand Prix racers, classic supercars and century old veterans in action?

Agents raided by fraud squad Two of the Sydney-based agents whose homes and offices have been raided by New South Wales police over ongoing investigations into salary cap breaches manage a host of Warriors players.

George Mimis and Paul Sutton are the two most prominent agents for SFX Sports who manage 10 of the 35-strong Warriors playing squad including Kiwis Bodene Thompson, Tui Lolohea and David Fusitua. They also look after the Warriors’ Queensland State of Origin forward Jacob Lillyman and rising young stars Sam Lisone and Ken Maumalo.

Mimis and Sutton’s SFX offices in Pitt Street in central Sydney were raided this morning along with the homes of two other prominent player agents Wayne Beavis and Sam Ayoub as part of ongoing investigations into salary cap breaches at the Parramatta Eels football club.

Beyond their 10 Warriors, SFX has 83 leading players on its books including some of the game’s biggest names such as aspiring Warrior Kieran Foran, Australian and Melbourne Storm

Kiwis Martin Taupau, Dean Whare, Pita Hiku, Sam McKendry, Jason Nightingale and Russell Packer are also managed by SFX. Beavis, one of rugby league’s longest serving and most prominent player agents, also manages All Blacks halfback Aarron Smith and was involved in helping him through his recent disciplinary

procedures around his ill-fated Christchurch Airport toilet tryst.

Ayoud manages Australianbased Kiwis Jordan Rapana, Sam Moa and Sam Tagataese who are with Canberra, the Sydney Roosters and Cronulla respectively.

Australian media are reporting the police investigations are related to the Parramatta salary cap dramas and there is no suggestion other players who are

with the agents in question but don’t play for the Eels are being investigated or have done anything wrong.

Officers from the NSW Fraud and Cybercrime Squad carried out search warrants at homes in the Sydney suburbs of Leichhardt, Woollahra, and a business premises in the CBD, police officials said.

No arrests are expected, but officials confirmed the searches were being conducted in relation to Strike Force Rhodium, the unit tasked with investigating salary cap breaches at the Eels club.

The raids are the latest incremental shift in a probe that was prompted by an award-winning series of articles about alleged salary breaches first published

by The Sydney Daily Telegraph.

Detectives were seen entering the Woollahra home of Beavis, a manager to former Eels player Jarryd Hayne, about 9.30am.

Concurrent raids were taking place on the home of Ayoub, officials said.

An official said the operation had been planned and was largely being carried out to seize documentation.

All Black Aaron Cruden, heavily courted by French club Montpellier, says he has made no decisions on his future.

Cruden’s contract with New Zealand Rugby ends next year and there is increasing speculation that he will move offshore. Beauden Barrett’s form in the No 10 jersey has been impeccable, goalkicking apart, and while Cruden might get a start during next month’s Northern Hemisphere tour, it is likely to be a temporary option only.

Cruden, named on the reserves bench for Saturday’s test against the Wallabies at Eden Park after his rehabilitated groin survived 40 minutes for Manawatu at the weekend, gave a spiky response when asked about the speculation over his future.

“No, I’m not aware of it,” he said. “Do you want to fill me in?”

When told of Montpellier’s interest, he replied: “I suppose you can’t believe everything you read in the media. I am off contract with New Zealand next year.

Obviously I’m working through that at the moment. I’ve got a few decisions to make, but the time probably isn’t right now to be making those decisions. I guess coming back in after an injury lay-off, my focus is on the game this weekend.

“I haven’t put too much thought into it.”

Cruden said the selectors’ decisions during next month’s four-test tour would have no bearing on his decision. That is likely to be the time when coach Steve Hansen attempts to persuade the 27-year-old that he should stay.

“We haven’t sat down and had a big discussion,” Hansen said. “He knows that we want him to stay and that discussion will probably happen when we are away. He’s not going to make that decision overnight.

“He’s a big part of who we are and what we do. He’s in our leadership group and he’s a good enough player to be a starting test player so we don’t want to lose him. That’s going to be a decision that he’ll make and he’ll make it for what’s right for him and his family.”

Storey leading hope Kiwi racing driver Dominic Storey will head into next week’s Hampton Downs 101 as the leading local hope in the Australian GT Endurance Championship. Storey is in a share of fourth in the standings with the Hampton Downs event the penultimate round before a finale at Highlands Motorsport Park near Cromwell next month.

Reacting to a pub sign in Glasgow advertising yesterday’s game, but with trouble spelling the visitor’s name – leading to several efforts crossed out before settling on ‘A German Team’ – Monchengladbach responded in the best possible way. After sharing a picture of the pub sign, the Bundesliga club showed their sense of humour by also changing their Twitter account name to ‘A German Team’ in what can only be described as a moment of social media genius.

Left-arm quicks needed South Africa’s cricketers have asked for a bevy of left-arm quick net bowlers to help them prepare for the threat of Australian trumpcard Mitchell Starc. Many South Africans, including middle order batsman Dean Elgar, are yet to face pace spearhead Starc, who has just played one Test against the Proteas - back in 2012.

“It’s a general request from our management, there is not a lot of left-arm seamers,” Elgar told reporters in Adelaide yesterday, ahead of their tour-opening match against a Cricket Australia XI this weekend.

Blunt-force injury A young soldier died after receiving a blunt-force head injury while playing in a “troop versus troop” rugby league match, the coroner has found. Lieutenant Samuel Andrew Scott died in the intensive care unit of Wellington Hospital on August 6, 2014. Two days earlier, the 21-year-old Feilding-based army officer was injured during a match organised

by Linton Military Camp staff.

Coroner Carla na Nagara found Scott received the fatal head injury when he was “bunted or bumped” off a player he was tackling.

The incident occurred in a wellcontrolled, competitive game, she said. “The exact circumstances of the tackle cannot be established, but I am satisfied that the tackle was legally made, and legally defended.”

Mid Canterbury Netball’s third week of its summer league continued in exciting fashion on Wednesday at the EA Networks Centre Stadium.

Stepping Stones started matches with the highest scoring win in the Business House League with a 34-27 win against Silver Thorns who were not quite good enough

to match them.

Tavendale and Partners had an easier time in their game as they doubled Seeds R Us score 26-13.

RMF played next in the league and beat EA Networks with ease in their 20-7 victory.

High Raters continued their strong form in their 28-21 win against Talley’s Cool Chips and Property Gurus also kept their momentum going from last week

as they beat The Fly Hunnys 2114.

In the social skilled division Dodgy Knees had no trouble against the Cunning Stunts in their 29-13 triumph and a thrashing from Balls Up! was delivered to Rakahe with the final score 31-18.

Splash ‘n’ Buckets were unable to surpass Te Tahi who came out best in a tightly fought 27-22 and there was only four points be-

tween S & Giggles and Battle Dogs who ended up on top 26-22.

Bench Warmers gave the biggest thrashing of the league in their 32-9 win against Gin and Tonic who struggled to compete.

Salty Geraldine Lips and One Hundred Percent provided the closest match of the night as both teams competed well in the 2722 game as Salty Geraldine Lips finally managed to secure victory.

Mika Vukona was one of the Breakers’ first recruits, he played in their first game and was on the court for their first championship.

In many ways, the story of his playing career is inseparable from the club he captains so it’s appropriate that, last night at the North Shore Events Centre, Vukona will become the first man to play 300 games in Breakers colours.

The 34-year-old has always been agnostic when it comes to personal milestones but, with that great, big round number looming against the Sydney Kings, Vukona was given no choice but the reflect on the elements behind the achievement.

Three-hundred games for one club speaks to his skill, yes, and also his longevity, especially when factoring in a two-year spell for two clubs across the Tasman. But mainly, in typically selfless fashion, Vukona attributes his accomplishment to those around him.

From fellow foundation players Paul Henare and Dillon Boucher to a support staff that may have changed in personnel but never wavered in its care for the players, Vukona knows why and how he still calls the Kiwi club home.

“Family,” he said by way of an explanation of his loyalty. “I know everybody keeps saying that, but when you’re in a good environment and a good family situation, you always want to be there.

There’s always times where it’s hard, but it’s just awesome to be here.

“And I guess winning also makes a massive difference and has a big influence on you. When you keep winning championships, you just want to keep coming back and getting more.”

Ah, yes, the winning. It’s certainly doubtful Vukona would have pulled on the singlet for 12 seasons if the side were regularly finishing near the bottom of the ladder, as the Breakers did during his first five-year stint. But it’s unarguable the Breakers never would have enjoyed such a sustained run of success, as they have during his second seven-year term, had Vukona been absent.

Batsman Shaun Marsh is in careerbest form, according to his WA cricket coach Justin Langer, but injury and selection issues means he’s no certainty to retain his Test spot. Marsh scored 130 in his last Test in Sri Lanka back in midAugust, but missed the subsequent one-day series in South Africa with a fractured finger. His injury run continued earlier this month when he suffered a low-grade hamstring tear in a domestic one-day game in which he scored 70.

Australian welterweight Jeff Horn says he feels exhausted but still confident of victory after dropping upwards of 4kg to make weight for his career-defining clash with German Rico Mueller today. Horn was a relieved but tired man when he weighed in at 66.35kg on Thursday in Brisbane while Mueller, who hasn’t lost in the last six years, also narrowly cleared the 66.7kg weight limit. Both fighters will be required to weigh in again this morning and cannot exceed 71.7kg, ahead of a bout that could result in a title shot for the winner.

The Ashburton College 1st XI will have to perform at their best if they want to win against Christchurch Boys’ High School 3rd XI Black in Christchurch this Saturday.

Ashburton College 1st XI coach Mark Reid said the team will have to perform “much better” if they have any chance of beating CBHS 3rd IX Black.

The had won one game and lost one last weekend and needed to address the issues that caused them to lose last Sunday, Reid said.

He said the boys had not played as well as they could and their batsmen needed to contribute more in the next game.

“A lot of players got starts but didn’t carry on.

“If a couple of the guys had carried on we could have gotten a better total.”

Ashburton College 1st XI were bowled out for 153 and gave CBHS 3rd XI Black little to chase and went on to win with eight wickets to spare.

Reid said the boys managed to grab a couple of wickets early on but a 3rd wicket partnership was built against them and the bowlers soon tired due to the heat.

He said the players were capable of winning but they were facing a tough team.

“We have to be at our best.”

Starc cleared

Mitchell puts on a dominant performance The Terrace Downs Resort Fast 4’s tennis competition 2016-17 started with exciting games and brilliant plays on Tuesday evening.

Maiden’s Aiden Mitchell kicked things off with a dominant performance in the singles games against Young Gun’s Tyler Leonard who could only muster one game in his 4-1, 4-0 defeat.

Young Guns’ Jarred Hill emerged victorious after he played Maiden’s Cameron Grant, who was on his Fast 4 debut, and won 2-0 with a score sheet

of 4-2 and 4-1. Leonard and Hill teamed up for the doubles against Mitchell and Grant for a competitive game that went right down to a tiebreak with Leonard and Hill just trumping their opponents two sets to one.

The Leonard and Hill duo took the first set 4-2 but Mitchell and Grant bounced back 4-0 to take them into the last set and a tie break with Leonard and Hill winning 5-4.

Koasters’ Robbie Bennett snagged a win after he lost the first set to his opponent ConMA’s

Connor Brosnahan but came back quickly and ended up 2-1.

Koaster’s Hamish Niles played ConMA’s Jade Brosnahan and won the first set on a 4-3 tie break and continued with his momentum to take the second set 4-2.

They might have lost individually but combined the Brosnahan’s managed to score their only successful game against Niles and Bennett with a 4-3 and 4-2 win.

Koaster’s ended with a 2-1 win.

In the other court MatJade’s

Tony Brosnahan played against Double A’s Andrew Hunt and prevailed with a 4-0 and 4-2 victory.

MatJade’s Mathieu Lucas lost to Andrew Hunt 4-1 in both sets in their game to leave it to the doubles to win their round.

Brosnahan and Lucas came up top after the game went into a tie break with Double A’s taking the first set 4-2 and MatJade taking it 4-3.

MatJade won the tie-break game 5-1 for an overall victory of two matches to one.

Paceman Mitchell Starc is looking forward to resuming his increasingly influential Test pace partnership with Josh Hazlewood after declaring himself ready to retum from a leg injury. Starc said he was available for selection for NSW for their Sheffield Shield opener against Queensland starting next Tuesday at the Gabba. It will be Starc’s only tuneup before the team for the first Test against South Africa in Perth – starting on November 3 – is named on Friday week.

Hodgson returning Western Force captain Matt Hodgson will play a 12th and likely final Super Rugby season next year ahead of his transition into coaching. The 35-year-old flanker, a veteran with 11 Wallaby caps, has signed on to add to his clubrecord 131 games with the Perthbased franchise. Hodgson’s 2017 campaign will include a mentoring aspect before he joins Dave Wessels’ coaching panel in 2018.

“I want to become a mentor to the younger players coming through,” Hodgson said.

Savea the weapon for ABs blitzkrieg Julian Savea’s recall to the All Blacks for Saturday’s test against the Wallabies after he sat out the last match against the Springboks is an indication of the team’s mindset as they approach a match with a world record on the line.

Steve Hansen’s team will want to launch a blitzkrieg assault from the first minute at their Eden Park fortress, and in a rested and motivated Savea they have the perfect attacking weapon.

Waisake Naholo makes way for the left wing, the only change to the starting lineup from the 57-15 thrashing of the Boks at Kings Park a fortnight ago.

That was Naholo’s comeback from a hamstring injury suffered in the first victory of the year against the Wallabies in Sydney, and while the Highlanders flier acquitted himself well, Savea fully deserves to reclaim the No11 jersey he has virtually made his own since his debut in 2012.

Savea has suffered his form issues for the Hurricanes and All Blacks this year, but has played extremely well in his four starts during the Rugby Championship.

On the reserves bench for the tournament opener against the Aussies at ANZ Stadium in August, Savea replaced Naholo just before halftime and scored one of the All Blacks’ six tries in the 42-8 hammering.

Since that test Savea scored a try in each of his next three tests against Australia in Wellington, Argentina in Hamilton and South Africa in Christchurch. He now has an extraordinary 43 tries in 48 tests.

As a finisher Savea is virtually without peer, but it is his reliability which really sets him apart now.

But although Hansen has named an extremely strong line-up as he and the All Blacks chase a record 18th consecutive test win, eyebrows from outside the group might be raised at the selection of Matt Todd in the No7 jersey ahead of Ardie Savea.

Todd made his starting debut on the openside flank against the Boks at Kings Park and clearly did enough to convince Hansen to leave him there. It is an intriguing selection given Savea’s form and has clearly been made to combat the threat of the returning David Pocock at the breakdown.

It is a big show of faith, too, in Todd, who has had to show immense patience during the reign of Richie McCaw and then watched as first Sam Cane and then Savea overtook him.

The 28-year-old, preparing to play in his sixth test, doesn’t have the power of Savea, but is an extremely good defender and is quick to latch on to the ball on the ground.

Steve Hansen Savea will be relied upon to drive the pace to a level the Wallabies can’t withstand in the second half.

The impressive Anton Lienert-Brown retains his place at centre alongside Ryan Crotty, with Aaron Cruden forcing his way on to the reserves bench after recovering from a groin injury, with Malakai Fekitoa also named on the bench.

“Australia will be coming here with a lot more confidence than when we played earlier in the season. They’ve made some significant changes to their game and would like nothing better [than] to end their Southern Hemisphere test season with a win,” Hansen said.

Sport Whincup fires shots Jamie Whincup has accused Supercars boss James Warburton of playing dirty after his appeal over his Bathurst 1000 finish was thrown out.

The Red Bull Racing driver has also accused TV networks of doctoring race footage audio to suggest he didn’t follow team orders which led to the crash at Mount Panorama. In a statement on his website, Whincup says he’d be more than happy to work with Supercars to help improve their penalty process as they’ve still got a fair way to go to refining it.

Orange take out finals

Orange is the colour of victory at Ashburton College after the inter-house volleyball finals yesterday.

Eight teams across the junior and senior levels represented their houses and it was orange

house who won three out of the four finals.

The Orange Senior Girls won with ease against the Red Senior Girls 29-15 and Red Senior Boys just came out with a 2019 victory over Orange Senior Boys.

Orange then dominated the

junior level as the Orange Junior Girls beat the Red Junior Girls 27-20.

The junior boys’ game was closer as Orange Junior Boys dispatched Green Junior Boys 21-17.

Ashburton College sports coordinator Deb Kell said volley-

ball was one of the last competitions for houses to win points, so it was a crucial competition.

She said there was little between the houses and their points, so the competition could be the difference between a house winning or losing the house cup.
