Ashburton GPs are sometimes taking security guards with them on after-hours calls as they take precautions following the town’s Winz shootings. The security guards are likely to be a temporary measure as the GPs work with public health authorities to establish a central safe meeting room at Ashburton Hospital. Chief executive Bill Eschenbach said yesterday the RCPHO was working with Ashburton Hospital and the Canterbury District Health Board to identify a room at Ashburton Hospital where doctors could meet patients after-hours. Ashburton GP spokesperson John Guthrie said after the Winz shootings on September 1, two concerned GPs had contacted the RCPHO to arrange for GPs to have the option of having a security guard at their surgeries with them when they attended a night call.
