Playground ‘dangerous’

An Ashburton mother has described the condition of some parts of the Ashburton Domain playground and aviary as absolutely horrific after a near-miss with her son yesterday and called for a please explain from the Ashburton District Council.

Symone Hart took to social media yesterday afternoon after her two-and-a-

half-year-old son, Huxley, tripped on the worn matting on top of the castle at the domain playground – nearly toppling over the edge in the process.

Hart said it was extremely obvious that no-one has done any kind of work, or upkeep on the playground in a very long time and that the apparent lack of meeting health and safety standards was appalling. “We have become quite the regulars to the playground and aviary,

“I have a son who is a bird lover and particularly a peacock lover.

“The aviary is a wonderful thing, but the condition that it is in, is also one of great disappointment.

Police believe an increased presence on the roads has played a role in the lower local road toll.

While the New Zealand road toll surges towards a seven-year high, the number of drivers killed on Mid Canterbury’s roads has seen a forty per cent decrease.

Police are praising better driving, local police strategies and the Safer Journeys campaign for helping slash the local Mid Canterbury road toll from five over the 12 months preceding November 2016, to three over the past 12 months.

Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said though the three deaths had been incredibly sad for the families that had lost loved ones, it certainly “bucks the national trend” of a significant increase.

“I believe residents of Mid Canterbury have simply stepped up and are setting an overall better example of driving.”

According to Banfield the local police strategy has been simple: increase police visibility at peak times, and identify times of risk on the state highways and high-profile bypass routes to the lakes.

“Our role was simply to be seen and be seen often between the Rakaia and the Rangitata rivers … and for our staff to take a ‘see something do something’ attitude towards their duty.”

In the recent school holidays, Ashburton police on general duties had also been re-rostered from days off to support the local highway patrol team – an initiative which Banfield said resulted in

five times the number of “on duty” staff deployed solely for road policing duties.

But with silly season soon to hit, local police are urging people to keep putting safety first.

“With Christmas fast approaching socialising will be at the top of everyone’s list,” Banfield said.

“Alcohol often goes hand-in-hand with socialising … but alcohol has no place in a motor vehicle or on any Mid Canterbury road.”

The overall New Zealand death toll for 2017 is 330, which is one higher than all of last year. A government crisis meeting held yesterday looked at options to tackle the high road toll before the holidays hit.

As well as the issues at the aviary and on top of the popular castle which has a slide at the top, Hart also found issue with a number of potential hazards.

“There are rusty nails sticking out along the old bridge along with the state of the wood on the fort.

“The yellow slide has been cordoned off thankfully after being out of action for quite some time.

“There are also a number of other issues with the mats around the playground and around the edging where the wood has broken.”

Hart, who runs a blog on Facebook which details her life as a busy mother, garnered huge amounts of support from her followers who had also endured the same experience when visiting the domain. This led her to going public with her concerns.

She emailed the Ashburton District Council yesterday afternoon and others had rung the council office and been told that someone would be going out to inspect the playground.

“As a child, I went to the domain every weekend with my grandparents and we absolutely loved it and have such wonderful memories.

“But, I never had to play on something that is so dangerous, so why should my son and the other children of this town?”

Ashburton District Council’s open spaces manager, David Askin, said that Hart made some very valid points.

“They are things we are aware of,” he said.

“Two of our staff have recently attended a Level 2 Playground Operational Inspector Training course as we try and keep up with a lot of the changes that are happening.

“There are things there that wouldn’t have been an issue all that long ago, but are now.”

Not enough time was available yesterday for Askin and his team to come up with a plan to correct some of the issues, but he expected to be in a better position today.

On the aviary, he said that current work on the site was on-hold due to staff being required to tend to other issues following a strong spring growth.

Significant work and money had already been put into the aviary, but it was independently controlled.

A celebration of flowers

With New Zealand Flower Week in full bloom, the spotlight is on local growers and florists.

Celebrations around the country will see installations and public events celebrating the beauty of blooms and the importance of the industry within New Zealand, and encouraging Kiwis to stop and smell the roses.

It’s the second time a national flower week has been recognised, and it’s proven a hit with those on the end of the pruning shears – including Mid Canterbury’s own florists.

Kelly Pearson of Kakariki Flowers in Tinwald said the week was “good recognition” for companies like hers that are already working to get flowers ready for Christmas and even Valentine’s Day, as well as selling a number of new flowers as the season shifts from spring into summer.

Pearson said it’s a particularly good time to buy peonies, which are currently flowering on site at Kakariki, along with roses of various colours.

Rebecca Jones from the National Flower Promotion Group said they hope to encourage growers, wholesalers, florists and Kiwis to get involved with Flower Week and to become “more passionate than ever” about local and seasonal flowers.

“It’s important to note that New Zealand’s floriculture industry is a major source of production, employment and export,” she said.

National Flower Week runs from November 20-26.

Right – Mid Cantabrians looking for reasons to buy a bouquet needn’t look any further – National Flower Week is this week, and local florists like Kelly Pearson from Kakariki Flowers have roses and peonies aplenty.

■ ASHBURTON YOUTH COURT

Youth sentenced to residential care An Ashburton youth who stole a work truck and drove it to Christchurch, where police used road spikes to stop it, was sentenced to six months’ residential care in a youth justice facility yesterday.

The 16-year-old appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton Youth Court on a raft of charges arising from the incident on September 30.

The charges included burglary, reckless driving, possessing drug utensils and tools for car conversion.

He stole the $10,000 truck from Rooney Earthmoving in Ashburton and it was spotted in Christchurch later that night, the occupants had their faces covered and were armed with tomahawks and hammers.

The youth drove the vehicle around city streets and police deployed two sets of road spikes to stop it.

Judge Maze told the youth yesterday he would be living at Te Puna Wai, at Rolleston, for six months until May 19. She will allow an application for early release on March 19.

The judge also disqualified him from driving for six months.

A report prepared for the court said the youth was street-wise and had first come to the attention of youth justice in 2013. He had problems with alcohol and drug use.

He could be charming, but had strong tendencies to anti-authority and lacked empathy.

The judge said a lot of his offending was spur of the moment and while he tried hard not to re-

offend, he continued to do so.

She said the residential sentence would remove the youth from his existing environment and associates that he was with when the offending occurred.

Police did not seek reparation because the youth had no ability to pay. The judge said the amount was significant, but a reparation order could not be met.

The youth had been in custody and Judge Maze said at an earlier appearance it was a option to convict him and transfer him to the district court for sentence.

“Good luck with the sentence,” she told him before he left the dock in the custody of Te Puna Wai officers yesterday.

“Let’s hope all goes well for the 19th of March. I will see you then.”

Lengthy jail term likely A Canterbury farmer linked to burglaries and thefts of farm machinery, tools, and trailers worth more than $200,000 was told yesterday that he faces a lengthy jail term.

Matthew John Woods, 43, is connected with an 18-month crime spree across Canterbury, that saw businesses, farms, commercial lock-ups, and residential homes targeted.

A glove left at a burglary scene matched Woods’ DNA, Christchurch District Court heard yesterday.

When police raided a property in Christchurch, and another in rural Selwyn, that Woods was involved with, they found more than $160,000 worth of stolen goods.

Woods was found in possession of stolen tractors, ride-on mowers, trailers, building and construction equipment, machinery, power tools and a racing bike.

Police finally caught him on September 6 this year when an officer recognised him driving on State Highway 1 near Dunsandel.

Woods, driving a green VW station wagon and towing a stolen trailer with ride-on lawn mower on top, sped off and took police on a chase that reached speeds of 140km/h.

He went through a stop sign and sped through road works as police abandoned the pursuit.

He was slowed by road spikes on SH73 before police rammed him off the road after the 24km chase.

A search of Woods’ car turned up dozens of keys to vehicles, houses, and industrial equipment including diggers, loaders, and forklifts.

Police also found 1.6 grams of methamphetamine, morphine, 2.5 grams of benzylpiperazine (BZP) in his car.

Woods, through defence counsel Tim Fournier, admitted 45 charges yesterday of burglary, receiving stolen property, drugs, failing to stop, breach of community work, and fraud charges to a value of $9500.

Judge David Saunders remanded Woods in custody to be sentenced on January 30.

Black billed gulls return

Ashburton’s critically endangered river gulls are back at their favourite summer spot, right by the busy State Highway One bridge.

About 2000 black billed gulls have congregated just downstream of the bridge, and are beginning to build nests so they will be able to raise their young through the Christmas and New Year period.

It is the same spot they return to each year, but numbers and the time they arrive can vary.

This year’s number is similar to last year’s, and the colony has also set up at a similar time to last year’s, which is later than colonies of the same species in other areas, which establish from September onwards.

Forest and Bird Ashburton president Edith Smith said it was possible the new State Highway One colony represented defectors from a group of about 9000 at the Ashburton River mouth.

She said it was good to see the birds beginning to settle on a natural island in the middle of the river, which had been created from recent floods.

Last year’s colony had good breeding success at the river, mostly on a man-made island, with two-thirds of chicks reaching the stage of being able to fly away. The birds are vulnerable

After two days’ spent shifting around 1000 toys, Ashburton’s Toy Library have settled into their shiny new home.

The library has taken up residence in a nook at 106 Victoria Street, around the corner from their original site in the Methodist Church in Baring Square East.

The toy library is in its 23rd year of helping local children explore, play and learn – with around 150 families signed up.

Christmas extravaganza Mid Cantabrians will be able to do all their Christmas shopping under one roof when the Merry Little Christmas Market is held this Sunday. The Ashburton Trust Event Centre holds the shopping extravaganza annually, and this year there are more than 80 sites booked. Business owners, produce makers and craftspeople are coming from throughout the district to sell their wares, which will include everything from summer fruits to beauty and fashion items. The event generally attracted good crowds, Event Centre bar and catering manager Casey Rose said.

Disturbing protected birds is an offence under the Wildlife Act 1953 and can result in imprisonment or fines up to $100,000.

“It’s so good to have this colony right in the middle of the town, a critically endangered species right here,” Smith said.

HELP NEEDED FOR SURVEY Forest and Bird Ashburton is seeking strong walkers to help out in its annual bird survey on the Ashburton River this Saturday.

Volunteers will need a pair of sturdy boots and to be prepared

for some river crossings.

Toy library in new home

“It’s been absolutely brilliant so far,” she said.

An official opening will be held on November 25 and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon will do the honour of snipping the ribbon.

The Ashburton Toy Library are open on Thursdays and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Volunteers who planted 11 fruit trees in Chambers Park Methven are disappointed vandals have broken one of the fig trees in half.

The vandalism was discovered following the weekend. The volunteers are looking forward to the benefits the trees will bring to Methven residents in years to come. Other trees include plums, pears, apples and figs.

Art exhibition opens Five female artists who love to paint together are preparing to exhibit at the Short Street Studio.

Five Go Mad With Art will open on Thursday 6pm to 8pm. The exhibition, which will feature work for sale in a wide variety of mediums, will also be open 10am to 6pm on Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The artists are Lee Muckle, Diana Marshall, Kaye McAndrew and Lyndsay McCosker, of Ashburton, and Dianne Hunt of Christchurch.

A 15-year-old driver fleeing police in a stolen vehicle with four passengers sped along Auckland’s Southern Motorway before crashing into a truck. The driver failed to stop for police in Otahuhu just before 11am, a police spokeswoman said. The car sped towards the city with police in pursuit until units were stood down. The police Eagle helicopter flew overhead, tracking the car until it crashed into the back of a truck in Greenlane. The driver and four occupants were helping police with their inquiries.

Aaron Christopher Robinson was jailed for 14 months after admitting charges of assault with a weapon, intentional damage, driving while disqualified and his ninth charge of drink driving.

Sentencing had been adjourned to yesterday so Robinson, a highly regarded worker, could arrange an address for electronic monitoring for a sentence of home detention.

But Robinson said he did not want electronic monitoring.

Judge Maze canvassed the facts around the charges, which arose from two separate incidents. In one, Robinson used a crowbar to smash a man’s car and hit him on the knee.

The driving charges arose when he was found in June, slumped over the wheel of his car, the engine running.

Robinson had eight previous convictions for drink driving and 13 for violence, the judge noted.

She said he had given up drinking for 18 months but began again, resulting in the offences.

Leevi Samuel Barry Prisk was caught drink driving after the Methven rodeo. A policeman on patrol noticed the headlights of his car were not on and signalled for him to stop.

Prisk backed away around a corner, but eventually had to stop. He blew 992mcg.

He was remanded to December 1 to appear in the Christchurch District Court for sentencing.

Steer’s in-grown horn left to grow into animal’s eye A farmer that allowed a steer’s in-grown horn to grow into the animal’s eye socket was fined $2000 in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Waller Farms had admitted charges of failing to provide proper treatment for the steer and allowing an unfit animal to be transported.

MPI prosecutor Grant Fletcher said the farmer had failed to treat the steer for the in-grown horn, which penetrated the skin 3.5cm and had reached the left eye socket.

The animal had suffered unnecessary pain and distress, he said.

The steer was among 50 selected for slaughter and the animal was stopped by a yard man at the freezing works when they were delivered. The animal was isolated in a pen and an MPI vet called.

Fletcher said it was a reasonably serious case.

“It would have been a long process for the horn to grow into the steer and detectable for a reasonably long period of time.”

Waller Farming has 1000ha, grazing heifers and sheep, as well as growing cereal crops.

The farmer was horrified when the steer was brought to his attention and had taken steps to make sure it did not happen again, the court was told by the farm’s lawyer.

Practices had been reviewed and more qualified people hired.

Judge Joanna Maze fined the farm $1000 on both charges, acknowledging its lack of previous offending, remorse and remedial steps taken.

Puroka Teokotai was also remanded to December 18 for sentence on charges of drink driving and driving while disqualified. He blew 608 when stopped behind the wheel at a carpark after driving for fast food.

Michelle Anne Croton admitted driving with excess breath alcohol (472mcg); her vehicle hit a $20,000 car and caused it to be written off. She was fined $300, ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

Kane George Shaw was fined $900 for driving with excess blood alcohol (173/100). Shaw initially blew 699mcg but asked for the evidential blood analysis.

Judge Maze also disqualified him from driving for six months and ordered to pay $109 for the blood analysis.

Saul Brayden Hancox was sentenced to 80 hours community work and nine months’ supervision after admitting charges of drink driving, breaching community work and intentional damage.

He was also disqualified from driving for six months. Hancox broke a television set after turning angry when police visited him at the holiday park where he was staying.

Two men arrested after a $50 million methamphetamine bust in Christchurch last week can be named for the first time.

Jonathan Seal, 25, and Michael Harrison Cooper, 31, had interim name suppression lapse yesterday at their second appearance before a judge at Christchurch District Court.

They have been charged with importing a Class A drug, and possession of methamphetamine for supply.

They have been remanded in custody for another court hearing via audio visual link (AVL) from prison on December 4. It is expected the pair will then enter pleas to the charges.

The name of the business where the package was allegedly sent was suppressed yesterday by Judge David Saunders after a defence counsel application.

The pair were arrested by police last week in connection with what

police say is the largest-ever seizure of methamphetamine in the South Island.

The drugs arrived into Christchurch in an airfreight consignment sent from Mexico on November 1, police say.

Detailed examination found 49kg of methamphetamine concealed within a shipment of safety lights.

It consisted of 40 separate packages of around 1-1.2kg each, which has yet to be further forensically examined to determine the exact weight of the product.

Police say the drugs had a potential street value of $50m, and the seizure has prevented $60.71m of “additional community harm”.

Search warrants were executed at a number of addresses in Christchurch and in Auckland after a two-week joint police and Customs operation.

Female police officer knocked unconscious A female cop who was knocked unconscious in an unprovoked attack during a Rugby League World Cup match will be back at work later this week.

The officer was helping her colleagues contain disorder in Otahuhu, South Auckland after the Tonga v Lebanon semi-final match in Christchurch on Saturday when she was hit.

Inspector Rod Honan said the attacker was still on the loose and police were seeking the public’s help in tracking them down.

“We know a number of people would have seen the offender,” he said earlier in a statement.

The officer was treated for a head and arm injury in hospital before

she was discharged to recuperate at home.

Police yesterday confirmed the officer was being supported by police and she was expected back at work later this week.

Honan said police staff work tirelessly every day to keep the community safe and violent acts against officers are unacceptable.

“Someone knows exactly who committed this cowardly act and we urge the offender, or anyone with information, to come forward.”

Pike mine recovery plan good news for families Matt Markham

acinda and Winston promised it and now it looks like they are set to deliver.

The announcement yesterday that the government expects the recovery in the drift of the Pike River Mine will be completed by 2019 will have come as a welcome relief to the family members of those who sadly perished within its depths in 2010.

It will come almost a decade after the fact. But red-tape and a bit of political activity seem to have stymied the process at every turn and the view and desire of Labour and NZ First to get back into the mine and bring home the bodies of those who were killed became a major selling point leading into the election.

Ardern said yesterday when speaking on the matter that it would bring “much overdue closure, and if possible, peace of mind” to the families of those impacted on by the explosion and it is hard to disagree.

But the big question here is why has it taken so long to get to this point.

Why, under a National-led government were there issues around every corner and was safety of such a major importance to the reasoning to not head back into the mine when within a month we have Labour pledging to be in and out by 2019?

Something doesn’t quite seem right, does it?

Either we have a case of one side of the fence being extra cautious without reason or the other side being not cautious enough in a rush to deliver on their promises.

Of course we don’t want to see further disaster – not in any sense of the word, so safety in this process is paramount.

Every potential situation will have to be prepared for and no stone should be left unturned.

Ardern agreed yesterday there would be risk but the steps were there to mitigate those risks.

She also pledged that the families of those who lost their lives would be involved in the entire process and kept in the loop throughout every turn as things progressed.

All we can do, as a nation, is sit back and hope and wait that some closure is finally offered.

Dairy fightback is on a global scale

agree to continuous improvement rather than point in time reporting. This is important in areas such as greenhouse gases and water quality.

Surely the key thing is that every year we must demonstrably improve our position, not get fixated on arbitrary target figures that may have no relation to practicality or the timelines of scientific breakthroughs.

What’s needed is an honest and transparent approach that recognises we need to improve, versus simply trying to convince everyone we are right.

The push is for: ■ A single inclusive framework that allows the entire industry to participate, versus multiple exclusive programmes that try to define right and wrong/winners and losers; ■ A framework that will deliver global alignment, connection and quantified progress across the whole value chain. Some of the key goals are greenhouse gas reductions, and soil quality

and retention managed and enhanced for the future; ■ Safe and satisfying working conditions for dairy sector workers; ■ Animals treated with care, free of pain, injury and display normal behaviour; ■ Minimisation of waste, with re-use and recycling of materials.

All of the above are the usual suspects and in total there are 19 goals being worked on, so that dairy products and farmers worldwide are seen to be the leaders on all things sustainable, from the paddock to the markets.

Some of the major disruption we face is not from competing dairy companies but other food sources. Our challenge as members of the international dairy communities is to make sure we are the trusted food of choice whether customers want a satisfying taste, healthy fats, protein shakes, readily absorbable calcium or the many other qualities of our natural dairy product.

Yes, some will say we have lost some credibility on the environmental front, and we acknowledge that. But worldwide the dairy community is working hard to regain this and delegates in Belfast were shown that the fightback is on an international scale.

On most of these issues, we don’t fare too badly. While some in New Zealand are critical of us, on a global scale we are world leaders or not far off the pack on key matrix indicators. Fonterra’s commitments this week on a roadmap to greenhouse gas reductions here, and in its operations overseas, are just the start of more good things to come.

New Zealand dairy production generates 0.89kg CO2-e per kilogram of milk. That compares with a global median of 1.3kg CO2-e. We lead in many aspects of the dairy sector and we have determination to improve, and to share our knowledge and experience on efficiency and sustainability.

So the next time someone accuses you or your industry of having no climate change or environmental strategy, give them a few of the facts I’ve just outlined.

And you can add that the Dairy NZ Strategy, launched in 2013, has just been refreshed to take into account the rapid changes in the sector.

Dairy Tomorrow, to be launched this week, sets out a strategic vision for what we want to achieve together as a sector over the coming decade and beyond.

We spoke to people in the shops we visited and there appears to be a lot of concern that the i-SITE has

been taken away and many travellers passing through do not have access to information about Ashburton and landmarks of interest to visit.

We found a very helpful shopkeeper who provided us with a

map. He also expressed his dissatisfaction re the lack of a centre.

iwi dairy farmers can sometimes feel like they’re under siege from lobby groups, vegans and hardline environmental critics but they should remember they’re by no means alone in the world as they walk the inter-twined paths of efficient food production and sustainability.

This was brought home to me as I attended the workshops and discussion groups at the International Dairy Federation Summit in Belfast, Northern Ireland, earlier this month.

More than 1000 dairy leaders and experts from across the globe focused on the theme Making a Difference with Dairy and how a vibrant, efficient and sustainable dairy industry, with nutrient rich and innovative dairy products, can impact the health of current and future generations, the environment, animal health, dairy science and technology.

I learned plenty about where things are heading, not least from the AGM of the Global Dairy Platform (GDP) and discussions on its sustainability framework that member dairy companies and nations are signing up to.

Here in New Zealand we tend to get wrapped up on what’s happening locally but the global context is important too, especially as we are a big trader and acknowledged producer of quality dairy products.

There was plenty of discussion in Belfast on the merits and differences of a sustainability framework versus standards.

Mugabe remains defiant Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe defied calls to quit Sunday, saying he will preside over a ruling party congress in December in an announcement that could trigger impeachment proceedings this week and more protests demanding his ouster.

In a televised address, the 93-year-old Mugabe acknowledged what he said were “a whole range of concerns” of Zimbabweans about the chaotic state of the government and the economy, but he stopped short of what many people in the southern African nation were hoping for – a statement that he was resigning after nearly four decades in power.

The once-formidable Mugabe is now a virtually powerless, isolated figure, making his continued incumbency all the more unusual and extending Zimbabwe’s political limbo. He is largely confined to his private home by the military. The ruling party has fired him from his leadership post, and huge crowds poured into the streets of Harare, the capital, on Saturday to demand that he leave office.

Rookie cop shot dead during traffic stop Investigators in Pennsylvania are looking for the man who they say killed a police officer after a traffic stop.

Officer Brian Shaw, a 25-year-old patrolman, was shot just after 8pm in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, about 10 kilometres northeast of Pittsburgh.

Authorities said the suspect, 29-year-old Rahmael Sal Holt, got out of his car and ran away after Shaw pulled him over.

He shot the officer during the chase, New Kensington Police Chief James Klein said at a news conference.

Shaw died at a hospital. He had been with the police department for less than a year.

A visibly upset Klein ad-

dressed reporters for just less than a minute, taking a deep breath before he started speaking. He did not take questions.

“I’m asking anybody, anybody with any information, as minute as they think it might be, please, please give us a call.

We need to find the person that did this. Thank you very much,” Klein said before he walked away with a few uniformed officers.

Authorities have remained tight-lipped about the investigation. Police have not said why Holt was pulled over, or why he ran away. It also remains unclear how many shots were fired, or whether one of them came from the officer’s gun.

Harrison Ford came to the rescue of a woman who drove her car off the road in California on Sunday. The Star Wars actor was driving behind the woman on California State Route 126 when she lost control of her car and drove off the freeway and Harrison and a number of other drivers immediately stopped to help her. TMZ reports that the 75-yearold actor and the other drivers helped to get the woman, who was trapped in her car, out of the vehicle. She suffered minor injuries and was examined by paramedics.

Singing tradie stuns hosts

Cult killer Charles Manson dies aged 83 Charles Manson – one of America’s most notorious killers and cult leaders – has died at the age of 83.

Manson was connected to the brutal slayings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, and other Hollywood residents, but was never found guilty of committing the murders him-

self. TMZ states it has been told 83-year-old Manson died by his sister. Debra Tate told TMZ she received a call from the prison telling her Manson died at 8.13pm local time Sunday.

Last week he was rushed to hospital and has been receiving treatment since – under the close supervision of five attending police officers.

TMZ cited a source as saying: “It’s just a matter of time.”

Manson and his followers, often referred to as the Manson Family, committed a series of nine murders at four locations over five weeks in the summer of 1969. In 1971, he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the murders of seven people.

The most heinous killing is

arguably that of Sharon Tate, who despite pleading for the life of her eight-month-old unborn child, was mercilessly stabbed in the stomach by Manson family member Susan Atkins.

She was one of four people who died on August 9, 1969, at Polanski’s home in Benedict Canyon.

A Sydney tradie has left Sunrise hosts Samantha Armytage and David Koch stunned after delivering a pitch-perfect operatic performance. Dylan Saliba, 22, appeared on Seven’s breakfast show after a video of him belting out a heartfelt rendition of Nessun Dorma while attaching a shower head went viral.

He was happy to showcase his talent live on the show, delivering a performance of Canto Della Terra which left both hosts blown away. “It’s amazing,” Armytage exclaimed afterwards. The young tradie also revealed he’d love to “make a career out of singing”. “Leave it with us,” Kochie told him.

Insurance warning for Uber drivers

NZ food prices ease in October By reBecca howard New Zealand food prices eased in October as fruit and vegetables came into season and some dairy products were in for heavy discounting at grocery stores.

The food price index fell 0.1 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis versus the prior month, Statistics New Zealand said. Fruit and vegetables cost 1.3 per cent less than they did in September on a seasonally adjusted basis, while grocery food prices eased 0.8 per cent.

A kilogram of tomatoes, for example, was $7.68 in October compared with $10.02 in September.

“Although fruit and vegetable prices have dropped this month,

the impact of bad weather earlier in the year continues to cause higher prices compared with this time last year,” consumers price index manager Matthew Haigh said.

Grocery food pricing was influenced by more discounting on yoghurt and chocolate, Stats NZ said. Yoghurt prices dropped 9.7 per cent in October, while confectionery, nuts and snacks fell 1.5 per cent.

Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 0.8 per cent on the month in October, influenced by higher prices for beef, up 4 per cent, and processed meat, up 2.3 per cent.

Non-alcoholic beverage prices showed no overall change while restaurant meals and ready-toeat food prices rose 0.1 per cent

versus September.

Annual food prices rose 2.7 per cent, with fruit and vegetable prices increasing 4.4 per cent, while grocery food prices were up 2.8 per cent, led by higher prices for most dairy products including butter, fresh milk, and cheese, Stats NZ said.

Milk, cheese, and egg prices increased 5.9 per cent in the year to October 2017. This continues a general increase in dairy products in the year, with butter prices up 62 per cent annually to the highest level since the series began, Stats NZ said.

Butter prices reached a new record high, at $5.67 for the cheapest available 500 gram block, compared with $3.50 in October 2016.

Kiwis are gearing up for yet another flash sales shopping day, this time Black Friday.

Black Friday hasn’t been as popular in New Zealand historically compared to the US and UK, but this is rapidly changing, according to price comparison site PriceSpy. Last year Black Friday growth in New Zealand increased 160 per cent year on year.

PriceSpy New Zealand country manager Lisa Matinvesi-Bassett said she expected retailers to offer considerable savings on Black Fri-

day, this Friday. PriceSpy expected retailers to offer an average discount of 20 per cent on products, with the biggest discounts to likely be on electronics, she said.

“Based on historical data, we expect the biggest savings to come from electronics and gadgets this Black Friday, with retailers offering discounts ranging between 15 to 52 per cent off the recommended retail prices of items,” Matinvesi-Bassett said.

People who use their vehicle to offer Uber services will not be covered under private vehicle insurance, a major insurer has warned.

Vero, the country’s second largest provider of house, car and contents insurance, has issued a warning to those who rent out their cars or homes through the likes of Uber and Airbnb to check their insurance cover.

Richard Goodman, Vero’s manager technical underwriting, personal insurance, says the sharing economy is changing the way we use our assets and belongings – and blurring the lines of traditional insurance policies.

“The rise of platforms that allow us to rent out our personal belongings mean that people are now making money from their cars, homes, clothes and even their money.”

But he said that raised questions for insurers about when something you own stopped being for personal use and started to be a commercial asset.

“For insurers, the sharing economy changes the amount of

Goodman said the changes had been so quick the insurance industry was still adapting, but in the future there could be hybrid policies to cover people who use their property in different ways.

Spierings to chair Global Dairy Platform Global Dairy Platform (GDP) has appointed Fonterra chief executive officer, Theo Spierings, as GDP chairman.

Spierings said he was pleased to be taking on the role and playing a part in maximising the contribution dairy can make to the world.

“More than ever, people are turning to dairy for nutritional security and sustainable food and every day we see the good that dairy can do.

“We also recognise that the world will have more than 2 billion more mouths to feed by 2050.

With food demand expected to increase by at least 50 per cent in 2050, the challenge is how best to apply the goodness of dairy to the places and people that need it the most,” Spierings said.

“Along with the role dairy plays in everyday nutrition, there is a real opportunity to work together and look at new ways we can make the nutritional benefits of dairy more available for those facing poverty and hunger and those fighting obesity.

“Through the Global Dairy Platform, we will continue to push forward with a global effort to make the goodness of dairy contribute more by providing better nutrition, empowering our communities and promoting sustainable agriculture.

“We have made good progress since GDP was formed 11 years ago. At the same time if we are to make a real difference in a world where the pace of change is picking up, we need to be getting bet-

Spierings, who has been a director on the GDP board since 2012, will succeed Dairy Farmers of America CEO Rick Smith, who has chaired the organisation since 2015.

“It has been a great privilege to serve as GDP’s chair,” Smith said.

“Over the last two years, GDP has provided strong leadership and strategic thinking to increase the credibility and visibility of the dairy sector in the international community, particularly within the United Nations. We have built a solid foundation to grow on.”

Smith will continue to serve on the GDP board, along with Arla Foods chief executive officer Peder Tuborgh and Royal FrieslandCampina chief executive officer Roelof Joosten.

GDP was formed in 2006 to align and support the dairy industry to promote sustainable dairy nutrition.

Suffolk competition strong

It was a pretty successful Canterbury A&P Show for Mayfield suffolk breeder Norm Carr, who picked up two second-place ribbons.

The first was in the hogget ewe category, while he repeated the feat with a pair of hogget rams.

One of those rams has since sold and will be off to Invercargill shortly.

Carr, who has been attending the Canterbury show for the past 15 to 20 years, said the suffolk class again showed its strength at this year’s event, with about 35 sheep in the hogget ewe category.

“Sheep numbers might be down but suffolk numbers are up. It’s a popular breed. They’re selling as well as any terminal sire.”

Carr said he was holding a ram sale at his Boltons Road property on November 28. About 100 suffolk, suffolk/texel and poll dorset rams will be for sale.

MARKET REPORT Dairy It is now nearly three weeks since much of Canterbury has had significant rain and the dryland areas of the province are now turning colour from the spring green.

Mating is progressing well in most herds and those cows not seen cycling are being checked by vets and treated to encourage the start of oestrus.

First calving heifers are being run with bulls in their natural mating phase and these sires are rotated to ensure continued interest to the job at hand.

Concerns are growing about the lack of strength in the milk market and national production figures for October revealed peak milk volumes lifted 2.9 per cent on last year.

Given the present weakness in the powder market, analysts worry this extra milk will put further pressure on prices, although, the dairy futures market did lift slightly last week.

It has been reported that Chinese milk output has rebounded and this may limit exports to that country during 2018.

More negative news on the mycoplasma outbreak, with another 1000 cows to be culled, as MPI officials endeavour to isolate and eradicate this disease at its source.

The smaller milk processors are heralding the success of incentive schemes, as their suppliers respond well to monetary carrots to improve the quality of their milk product.

Lamb Some small indications this week that export schedules may be nearing their peak as the volumes of early spring lambs increases and the final parcels of chilled product goes by air into the UK. Other markets are still all positive and the focus is now to meet mutton and lamb demand for the Chinese New Year celebrations.

South Island local trade lamb schedules lifted by 30c/kg/cwt this week to ignite supply pressures even more as the big early lambs are harvested off mum at very profitable rates.

Beef and Lamb NZ has a new chairman, in Andrew Morrison, and looks to use farmers’ levies to stimulate production and improve demand for red meat.

Increases up to 12 per cent were achieved for crossbred fleece and hogget wools, which dominated the sale, and only 8 per cent of the offering was passed.

Merino wools continued their strong showing and mid micron fibre met strong competition after a disappointing result at the last Christchurch sale.

Beef More positive lifts in beef schedules this week as processors capitalise on unexpected demand in the US bull beef market.

Processors are positive about increasing beef opportunities from the early TPP trade negotiations but the local trade schedules remain steady at $5.60/kg/cwt for the sixth week in a row.

First Light’s Wagyu beef comes to the South Island and is being processed at Anzco as the specialist product grows in demand and supply from mainland beef producers.

Maladies and treatments

ast week’s heritage page focused on the establishment of Ashburton’s first hospital, and the other smaller nursing homes and private hospitals that existed in the Ashburton District.

This week the focus is on the illnesses and treatments that occurred at Ashburton’s first hospital.

Much of the data for these articles comes from the original Ashburton Hospital Admission Register. Covering the period 1882 to 1908, it contains over 3500 entries that shed light on patients, treatments, lives (and deaths) of many people from Ashburton.

Today the register is more than a record of those who were admitted to the hospital, their names, sex and age, their ailments and the treatment given. It is a fascinating social document that provides details about their place of origin, length of New Zealand residence, marital status, occupation and, towards the end of the period, religion.

It also documents changes in medical terminology. It is intriguing to see in the early entries La Grippe as a complaint, an illness common in Victorian novelettes, which by 1892 had become influenza, the term used today.

There are three striking aspects in these hospital admission records covering 26 years, first, the high ratio of five males to every female across all age groups.

Second, the very high proportion of men giving their occupation as labourer. And third, how many men gave their marital status as single.

The last raises an interesting question as to accuracy. Were some of the older men married and did not disclose their status, or were they widowers, or even absconding husbands, who omitted to reveal their true marital position?

The frequency with which labourer is recorded as a man’s occupation reflects the labourintensive nature of so much employment at that period, including the forming of roads and railways, agricultural work and transport, all of it potentially hazardous.

These factors go some way to explaining the high proportion of single male patients – they had no families to care for them when ill

Maladies The column in the register giving the reason for hospitalisation is rather quaintly headed malady.

Many illnesses were recognised, but little could be done for the sufferer before the discovery of antibiotics and modern drugs, beyond providing bed rest, nourishing food and nursing care.

Abscesses, phthisis (tuberculosis), and diphtheria were but three that fell into this category.

Diphtheria, a common childhood disease before immunisation, saw whole families hospitalised, including the mother.

Its wider impact on an entire community could be seen where a cluster of cases would, not

infrequently, follow an initial case of infection.

Outbreaks of other infectious diseases that tended to occur in smaller clusters included scarlet fever and typhoid, both the result of insanitary conditions, open drains and cesspits.

Influenza or La Grippe occurred on a regular basis with, at times, quite long periods of hospitalisation. Immunisation and modern drugs have ensured that these infections are no longer the scourge they once were.

Treatments The register also shows the length of hospitalisation and treatment prescribed for some diseases was very much at odds with today’s knowledge and

practices.

Cancers were removed and the patient discharged as cured; alcoholics kept for a few days and also discharged as cured.

Broken limbs often resulted in hospital stays of seldom less than a month. For one man with both tibia and fibula broken it was over six months in hospital.

The severity of the break would often have been exacerbated by the long time it took to get to hospital by horse and cart over rough roads.

Ashburton Hospital did not have an x-ray machine until 1903 and a satisfactory outcome depended solely on the skill of the doctor who set the bones.

Heart disease was a not uncommon diagnosis and the sufferer

would be admitted periodically for one to three weeks, merely staving off the inevitable death.

Across all age groups debility was another frequent cause of hospital admission for both men and women. Medically defined as weakness, loss of strength and energy it was often caused by unsatisfactory living conditions, an inadequate diet and maybe an underlying medical condition.

For some their hospital stay was short, for others it could be many weeks.

No doubt a great improvement on earlier treatment and diagnosis, it was a great advantage to have a local hospital provide treatment and care, and the register is testimony to the benefits for those many patients.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. Cummins raring to go

By Laine CLark Sitting on the couch watching yet another home series on TV, an injury-plagued Pat Cummins admitted the thought of playing a test on Australian soil felt more elusive than ever.

But six long years after donning his baggy green for the first time, the 24-year-old reckons he has finally got his head around the concept ahead of the Ashes starting in Brisbane on Thursday.

Fireworks are expected when Cummins is unleashed for the first time on Australian soil in a test attack alongside Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

However, not so long ago home test series were a bit of a fizzer for

Pat Cummins Cummins. The NSW quick burst onto the international scene as an 18-year-old in 2011 with a man-of-the-match display on Test debut in South Africa.

Injuries – largely stress fractures in his back – and seemingly endless rehabilitations ensured

he didn’t play another test until March this year.

“With each year it seemed like I was further way in some ways,” Cummins said.

“But all my tours were overseas so when I came back to Australia I was watching cricket so I didn’t really associate that it was a team I was a part of. This is probably the first time that I actually feel close and feel like I am a chance of playing so I am pumped.”

Cummins was the lone fast bowler selected for the second test against Bangladesh in the draining Chittagong heat.

“I got a lot of confidence out of that,” said Cummins, who has strung together five tests since 2011.

Paddon happy with WRC Kiwi driver Hayden Paddon has endured a tough 2017 World Rally Championship campaign but says he’s glad to head into the off-season on the right note with a Rally Australia podium finish.

Paddon finished third in Coffs Harbour, just under a minute behind Belgian winner Thierry Neuville and 36 seconds behind runner-up Ott Tanak.

As a result, the Geraldine native jumped up to eighth in the overall Championship standings – more than 150 points behind champion Sebastien Ogier.

It’s well off his best-ever WRC position of fourth.

“There is some light at the end of the tunnel in terms of finding our feeling with the (Hyundai) car – we’ve found some answers this weekend, which has been the main objective,” the 30-yearold Paddon said.

Heading into Sunday’s racing in fifth place, Paddon and codriver Seb Marshall found themselves battling intermittent rain and mud.

Nevertheless they enjoyed their strongest form of the weekend, with crashes to front-runners Craig Breen and Jari-Matti Latvala ushering them onto the podium.

They also secured a stage win during a brief period of sunshine.

Who will replace David Kidwell?

With David Kidwell off-contract and unlikely to be reappointed as Kiwis coach following the failed World Cup campaign NZME looks at the alternative options.

At present only coaches residing in New Zealand can be appointed as coach of the Kiwis.

That rule has been in place since 2002 when it was established as a softer way to sack Sydney-based Gary Freeman.

The rule, which isn’t even in the sport’s constitution, was a handy way for the NZRL to move on Brian McClennan in 2007 when he took a fulltime job at Leeds.

NZRL boss Alex Hayton said the board will have another look at the controversial rule and it could be removed before the appointment of the next coach.

Finding local coaches that are up to the task will not be an easy job as the list of candidates below highlights.

It would seem more appropriate to look overseas for the next Kiwis coach.

One big factor in deciding the next coach will be what funding there is available however. The NZRL is cash-strapped and simply picking the best coach might not be the over-riding factor in this decision.

The world champion New Zealand men’s team sprint trio have topped qualifying on the opening morning of the Oceania track cycling championships in Cambridge. Sam Webster, Ethan Mitchell and Eddie Dawkins clocked a competitive 43.132sec over 750m yesterday. In the men’s 4000m team pursuit, Australia will take on the Kiwi combination of Jared Gray, Hugo Jones, Nick Kergozou and Tom Sexton for the gold medal. The New Zealand combination of Bryony Botha, Rushlee Buchanan, Racquel Sheath and Kirstie James were fastest in the women’s 4000m pursuit. - NZME

Kiwis top qualifying

NZ-BASED Richie Blackmore The former Kiwi centre started coaching in 2004 and had successful stints at Manurewa, Otahuhu and Papakura in the Auckland competition while he also took the Auckland Vulcans to the NSW Cup Grand Final in 2011 and spent time at the Leigh Centurions in the UK. Blackmore expressed frustration at a lack of coaching pathways in the NZ game earlier this year.

Tony Iro The 25-test Kiwi has chopped back and forth from coaching to player developing and recruitment over the past few seasons.

He was the Warriors’ inaugural Under 20s coach in 2008 and has spent time as assistant coach at the Warriors and the Kiwis. He has been in charge of the NRL club’s recruitment and development recently but will go back to coaching next season.

Stacey Jones Jones was asked to be an assistant coach to Kidwell for the World Cup but the Warriors did not release him. He has served as both coach of the Under 20s and the NSW Cup side at the Warriors and was an assistant coach to

Stephen Kearney this season. He is the more relevant active coach in New Zealand.

Brian McClennan Took the Kiwis to a Tri-Nations win in his first season and followed that up with an overtime loss in 2006 in the final to start the renaissance of the Kiwis. He was forced out of the job in 2007 and spent time with UK glamour club Leeds where he won a ton of silverware. Bluey returned to New Zealand and took over as Warriors coach in 2012 but endured a terrible campaign and was promptly sacked. He has not coached since.

FOREIGN-BASED Craig Bellamy The Storm maestro continues to set the standard in the world of rugby league coaching and won another premiership with Melbourne in October. Whether he would want the job or whether he could balance club and country remain big obstacles but he’s worth including on merit alone.

Wayne Bennett The Brisbane Broncos and current England coach helped the Kiwis win the 2008 World Cup as an assistant to Stephen Kearney.

He has a passion for the international game and is regarded as one of, if not the, greatest coach in the sport’s history.

Des Hasler The NRL premiership-winning coach fashioned a phenomenal record during his time with Manly and the Bulldogs over the last decade or more. He lost his way with the Bulldogs this year and was sacked at the conclusion of the season. He is currently unemployed and has both the charisma and strength of character for the job.

Neil Henry Henry spent time at the Raiders, Cowboys and Titans in the NRL while he has also served as an assistant coach to Mal Meninga during the Queensland run of State of Origin success. Known as a great tactician, Henry has plenty of experience and an inside knowledge of how the current Australian coach operates.

Michael Maguire Won a premiership with South Sydney in 2014 and had six seasons with the club before being sacked at the conclusion of this season. Worked alongside Craig Bellamy at the Storm and had success with Wigan. He is a known hard taskmaster and would certainly bring a degree of authority to the role.

Graham wary of Tonga Tonga are far from a two-man band and England won’t be treating them as one in their Rugby League World Cup semi-final, according to veteran prop James Graham.

England booked a final four berth against Tonga in Auckland next Saturday night after outplaying Papua New Guinea 36-6 on Sunday. The Tongans boast the firepower of NRL giants Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita, but Graham said there were plenty more threats in the Tongan line-up than that duo.

Pacific rugby league is on a high following the island nations’ giant-killing exploits at the World Cup. Fiji knocked New Zealand out of the tournament on Saturday, beating the Kiwis 4-2 in a tryless quarter-final in Wellington. The defeat came just a week after the New Zealanders were beaten 28-22

by Samoa, the first time a tier-two nation has beaten one of the top-ranked sides. Hayton says a Pasifika tournament would build on the huge support the island nations have commanded during their World Cup games.

$10m a poor deal?

Jason Taumalolo is leading Tonga on a giant-killing run towards a World Cup final but with more success comes the realisation he may have made a $10 million mistake. “Give Taumalolo the Golden Boot now,” Matthew Johns said. “I’ve never seen a bloke who’s not a playmaker have such an impact on a football team.” But Taumalolo’s incredible form is emphasising he may have been hasty in signing a $10m deal with North Queensland. “Someone (Taumalolo or the Cowboys) are going to get a dud deal and at the moment it’s Taumalolo,” Johns said.

“It should have been $20 million for 10 years, and even then that might be a little cheap.”

There were fears the veteran Manchester United striker may not play again after suffering meniscus and cruciate ligament damage in April. Wilson finds his best form Roger Wilson produced his best race of the season to lift the Ineson Cup in Tinwald Cycling Club’s Canterbury Tree Topping Ltd 48km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday.

Wilson and his co-markers found the front of the race in the final 10km and held on strongly to keep the chasing groups at bay.

Leading into the finish any one of nine riders were in the hunt to

take the major spoils, but it was Wilson who produced the best finish to take victory.

Quentin Lawler showed good form to secure second place with Paul Williams continuing his consistent efforts picking up the final podium position.

Michelle Knight stormed into fourth place with Paul Summerfield and Tim Wilkinson rounding out the top six.

Matt Marshall, having his final hit-out before taking on the Lake

Taupo 160km bike challenge next weekend, secured fastest time honours riding the course in 73.54.

Co-markers Matt Clough and Paul Macfie claimed second and third time.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.

Scratch rider Maddi Lowry produced a top ride to take victory and in doing so also picked up fastest time honours riding the distance in 31.09.

Jack Templeton dug deep to take second place and time, with Lily Davidson claiming the third place spoils.

Harriett Sutton showed excellent form in winning and taking fastest time honours in the division 2 event, seeing off the challenges of Hillary Singlewood, Connie Davidson, and Lucy Clough.

Next week the club travels to Mt Somers to contest a 45km mass start event.

Ko 16th in season’s final appearance Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has finished in a tie for 16th at the LPGA’s lucrative season-ending Tour Championship event in Florida, six shots off last-gasp Thai champion Ariya Jutanugarn.

Ko struck a respectable fourthround three-under par 69 to earn a nine-under overall score, having faltered in the second and third rounds.

The 20-year-old Aucklander had fallen from third place on the leaderboard at the end of the first round to 12th and then 23rd.

But she was marginally better in Sunday’s action (NZT) in

Naples, hitting five birdies and two bogeys to move back up the standings.

She shared 16th place with four other golfers.

Higher up the leaderboard, Thai star Jutanugarn snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to earn an overall 15-under.

American rival Lexi Thompson had earlier bogeyed her 18th hole to fall to 14-under par and give Jutanugarn a sniff of victory, upon which she pounced.

Jessica Korda also finished on 14-under par. It was Jutanugarn’s

seventh LPGA tour event win.

Nevertheless, Thompson took home the season-long Race to the CME Globe title and its $US1 million ($NZ1.4m) reward as the tour’s leading points earner.

Ko remained in the running for the title until this week’s seasonending event, but needed to win and hope other golfers faltered.

Elsewhere, male compatriot Ryan Fox finished in a tie for 28th in the European Tour’s World Tour Championship in Dubai with an overall eight-under.

He was 11 shots off the Spanish winner Jon Rahm.

Attitude needs attention

By Liam Napier The All Blacks are fast discovering attitude and experience is everything at this level.

When they get the attitude bit right, they are near unstoppable.

When they don’t, well, we get what we got against the spirited Scots.

In Beauden Barrett’s matchsaving tackle and a seven-man scrum under their sticks, the All Blacks harnessed the necessary desire when they needed it most at Murrayfield.

But the frustrating part is it wasn’t always there.

And it’s not the first time this year it hasn’t quite been there.

The same was true in the Brisbane defeat, with the Bledisloe Cup already locked away, and in Cape Town after previously thrashing the Springboks in Albany.

The second halves in both Paris and Sydney, with those games won by halftime, were other occasions it fell short.

All teams rise for the All Blacks, rugby’s greatest challenge, but, if we’re honest, only twice this year have they hit the level expected; in Albany and the first dig at the British and Irish Lions.

There are, of course, extenuating circumstances.

Two years on from the 2015 World Cup, only seven players, two starters, remain.

Injuries to 10 other influential senior leaders further erodes crucial experience that drives the training week and captures the right mindset.

“Leadership is something you learn,” All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said.

“Richie McCaw in 2007 was quoted as being the worst leader in All Blacks history because we went out in the quarter-final.

“We won in ‘11 and ‘15 and everyone wanted to tell us he’s the best leader ever so something happened; he grew as a leader.

“All the information we get on leaders, and we’ve done a lot of research, is they’re not just instant.

“Maybe last year everyone underestimated us a wee bit and we had such a great year. Maybe we’ve overestimated ourselves.

“I don’t know.”

Even so, there is no real excuse for not getting the attitude right.

Sure, Scotland deserve credit, coming within one pass of a famous victory with their most inspired effort in recent memory delivered the closest result since 1991 against the All Blacks.

But Kieran Read’s men did themselves no favours with the way they started this match.

Attitude, or hunger, can be difficult to gauge but it is evident in not winning the advantage line; not being committed enough to the breakdown, or rushing off the line on defence.

“For us in that first half it wasn’t a skill thing we were maybe five per cent off with our attitude,” the All Blacks captain revealed.

“It just made it harder for us.

“It comes from within. It starts with the individual so we’ve got to look at ourselves and our prep and see what we can do better.

“We got in a position to close out the game and perhaps in the past we’ve done that better.

“Even with five minutes to go we had a chance to really settle it down.

“We’ve got to be better at that, but full credit to Scotland, they fought right from that first whistle to the 80th and kept coming at us.”

As attention turns to Cardiff and the intriguing final showdown of the year with Wales, disappointment from within the squad should ensure there is no repeat of the attitude issue.

“It’s pretty easily rectified Scotland rectified it for them,” Hansen said.

“Can you sense it?

“It’s a difficult one.

“You think things are going along quite nicely. There’s little things that give you alarm bells but by the time you see those it’s usually too late.”

In typical Hansen style, he compared proper preparation to cleaning windows.

“When you’re really desperate and urgent you get the corner

bits and when you’re not you don’t and you still think the window is clean when it is not.

“They’ve got an opportunity in a week’s time to play a really good test match. It’s the last of the year and they’ll want to do it really well.”

Not for the first time, Hansen batted away probes about Gatland’s threat in his book to reveal dirt on the All Blacks but their fractured relationship is sure to be the elephant in the room this week.

“Like everyone they’re starting to try and play some football which is good.

“He’s gone away from what he normally does – going round the corner – to trying to use his forwards in a different way and hold some of them on the short side and use the ball more.

“Everyone is really excited about a week that’s going to be really challenging and this team always responds to good challenges.”

Damage to a shoulder joint suffered in the 22-17 win over Scotland has sidelined the electric winger, robbing the tourists of their most potent attacking player. Coach Steve Hansen also confirmed that Luke Romano (foot) will miss Saturday’s season-ending test but, in Scott Barrett and Patrick Tuipulotu, there are two proven replacement candidates.

Hansen keeping calm Steve Hansen isn’t responding to revelations from Wales coach Warren Gatland that he has “explosive” information which paints the All Blacks in a bad light. The New Zealand coach is reluctant to add oxygen to claims in Gatland’s recently released book, which further taints the Kiwi’s relationship with the team he used to represent. Rebels on signing spree Melbourne Rebels are continuing to bolster their squad with fly-half Jono Lance and hooker Anaru Rangi joining their Super Rugby ranks. Experienced playmaker Lance will join the Rebels after stints with the Western Force. He also won Super Rugby titles with the Queensland Reds in 2011 and NSW Waratahs in 2014. The 27year-old is currently on a short-term contract with English Premiership side Worcester. Late bloomer Rangi, 29, earned his first Super Rugby deal in 2016. Trainer taking his opportunity Peter McKay isn’t taking a chance with Orange Shore and she will run at Te Awamutu today, even though the distance isn’t ideal.

The Matamata trainer has been frustrated in recent weeks, trying unsuccessfully to get a run for the four-year-old and he won’t pass up the chance in the Farrelly Calf Rearing Handicap (1400m).

“She keeps getting balloted out and not getting a start so now she’s going to be a month between runs,” McKay said.

“It would have been better if it was 1200m and there’s one for her at Te Rapa next Sunday, but she might get balloted again there so she’ll be running in this one.”

A debut winner last season, Orange Shore has been sparingly raced since.

She opened her current campaign with a strong showing for third behind Joy Anna, who has subsequently been an impressive winner, at Taupo.

She was unplaced on her return to that course before a bold last-start fifth on a Premier day at Hawke’s Bay. “That was a good run,” McKay said.

“She over-raced a bit early on in the race and she wasn’t far off the winner at the end.

“She’s done well since.”

Mark Du Plessis rode Orange Shore at Hastings and he will partner her again at Te Awamutu.

Sport Dimitrov eyes slams Grigor Dimitrov has claimed the biggest title of his career by beating David Goffin at the ATP World Tour Finals – and then set his sights on winning a grand slam. For years Dimitrov – who appeared burdened by the ‘Baby Fed’ tag – struggled to deliver on his supreme technical talent but the Bulgarian is finally living up to the hype after he beat Goffin 7-5 4-6 6-3 yesterday.

Dimitrov and Goffin at 26 are hardly fledglings on the tour but there is still time for each to enjoy greater success at major tournaments.

The Mid Canterbury Senior Rep cricket side have picked up an important victory in their buildup to the Hawke Cup, defeating Canterbury Country by 81 runs on Sunday.

Coach Garfield Charles had said he wanted to see the batsmen put their heads down and bat for longer periods, something the side were able to do on Sunday.

They won the toss and elected to bat, and despite losing James Southby in the first over for no

runs, Nick Gilbert, Des Kruger and Matt Tait steadied the ship.

Gilbert departed after building a partnership of 30 with Kruger, before he and Tait combined for an impressive 81 runs for the third wicket partnership.

Kruger eventually top scored for Mid Canterbury, falling one short of the half-century with 49 runs.

It looked like a lower order collapse was imminent for Mid Canterbury, with William Southby, Matt Winter and James Speer all departing for single figures.

However, a quick flurry of runs

from the last three batsmen saw Mid Canterbury to their total of 215, losing their last wicket with four balls remaining in the innings.

Jay Houston hit 16 of 21, Deon Biggs 13 off 15 while Alex Hooper smacked a quick-fire 22 from 18 balls.

Needing to chase 216, Canterbury Country never had a chance, with Mid Canterbury’s bowling attack ripping them to shreds.

of 44 runs, until James Southby dismissed the top three batsmen within a space of 11 runs.

Deon Biggs then set about picking up his impressive fivewicket bag, tearing through the middle order as Canterbury Country struggled for runs.

Jay Houston tidied up the tail, picking up the last two wickets as Canterbury Country were dismissed for 134 from 49.4 overs.

The side will play North Otago in Oamaru next week, before playing South Canterbury at the Aorangi Oval in their first match of the Hawke Cup a week later.
