New trading hours urged Step into the 21st century, says Ashburton retailer

It’s time Ashburton’s retailers stepped into the 21st century and increased their trading hours in the lead-up to Christmas – and perhaps all year around, retailers suggest.

McDonald said he’s battled for years to have Ashburton’s retailers adopt the same trading hours in the pre-Christmas weeks and every year the suggestion has got a pretty apathetic reaction.

“There needs to be some form of cohesiveness with hours in town. “People want the whole

town to be open, not just part of it,” he said.

Mr McDonald does have supporters, including Terry McNab from Ashburton Paper Plus.

He does keep his doors open late during the festive season, and he even reckons there’s scope for longer opening hours

all year round.

“It’s not just Monday to Friday now, and 9am til 5pm, or 5.30pm. Those days are gone,” he said.

Arcade retailers have already set their trading hours for December and these will include a late night on December 4,

trading until 4pm on Saturday December 13, until 4.30pm on Saturday December 20 and from 10am until 3pm on Sunday December 21. In addition on December 22 and 23, the arcade will be open until 8pm each night. continued page 3 Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!

Exclusive NZ hotel on market Friday night fish and chips, organic food and daytime naps may not sound very rock and roll, but they were all part of Rolling Stone Keith Richards’ stay at Auckland’s exclusive Cotter House in 2006. The Remuera hotel, now on the market for $5.2 million, is owned by chic 68-yearold Gloria Poupard-Walbridge. It was booked exclusively for the entirety of Richards’ stay, while he recovered from a head injury. In 2006 Ms Poupard-Walbridge told the Herald she would not talk about the guitarist, as she had signed a confidentiality agreement. But the agreement has lapsed and she was happy to share details of the now 70-year-old’s stay for the first time. Richards’ neurosurgeon, Andrew Law, had suggested the hotel. Privacy and a very high level of security were conditions which sealed the deal for Richards, his wife, Patti Hansen, and children. “They were absolutely delightful, exquisite people,” Ms Poupard-Walbridge said.

Lightning kills tree, power

A Beach Road couple had kindling delivered to their door on Wednesday evening – after a lighting strike blew a mature tree to pieces.

Jeanette Montgomery was home alone watching the six o’clock news, when she was startled by “an almighty explosion”.

“It sounded like a bomb going off,” Mrs Montgomery said.

“There was thunder and lightning outside, it was very intense and obviously very close, but I didn’t realise how close until a bolt of lightning hit the house and everything went off.”

Under the computer desk a power point and an internet router had disintegrated, leaving scorch marks up the wall.

“Not knowing much about electrics, I didn’t know whether the house was live or not – I just stood there,” Mrs Montgomery

said. “Then I watched a bolt of lightning fork straight down a power pole outside the gate.”

Mrs Montgomery finally ventured outside, to find debris strewn across the lawn, from a large tree about 50 metres from the house. It too had been struck by lightning – and blown to smithereens, with pieces landing in a paddock across the road, and all over the Montgomerys’ lawn.

A transformer had also been blown off a power pole on Cochranes Road.

David Montgomery arrived home to be confronted by the carnage. “He couldn’t believe it,” his wife said.

The couple were without power overnight. Yesterday contractors were called in to deal with the remnants of what was a 40m tree, and the Montgomerys left to contemplate a gaping hole in their roadside shelterbelt.

Retailers ‘need to look at their opening hours’

Ashburton’s retailers need to look at their opening hours all year round, not just at Christmas, according to one East Street retailer.

Ashburton Paper Plus operator Terry McNab does extend his store’s hours at Christmas, and is open on Saturdays and Sundays all year round – one of few East Street retailers to do so.

He echoes the comments of fellow retailer, Bob McDonald, who said the town’s retailers needed to step into the 21st century and increase their trading hours in the lead up to Christ-

mas, but according to Mr McNab, some could go a step further by extending their normal weekend hours too.

In a time of online shopping and big box chain stores, smaller business owners needed to maximise every opportunity.

For Mr McNab that meant that from December 8, his staff – and Mr McNab himself – would be working extra hours. Some nights they’d keep their door open until 9pm, but chances were, there wouldn’t be many others joining them.

“We do that every year. I just wish the rest of town would do it,” Mr McNab said.

“I hear so often, so many

times, everywhere, people come to town and say there’s nothing open, and then they don’t come to town anymore.”

He’d love to see more shops open their doors on Sunday too.

“We find trading really good on Sundays,” Mr McNab said.

Fellow East Street retailer Tony Todd, from Todds of Ashburton, doesn’t see the need for Sunday shopping in a town the size of Ashburton, but he would like to see shops working together in the lead up to Christmas.

“It’s a pity that we can’t get any uniformity in shop hours so that customers actually know we’re open,” Mr Todd said.

New hours urged From page 1 Those hours should lead the way for other retailers to follow suit and that would be a good incentive for shoppers to stay in Ashburton rather than heading out of town to malls where they knew every shop would be open, Mr McDonald said.

Several years ago the Ashburton Business Association approached every retailer in the central business area asking if they supported set trading hours at Christmas. All agreed and the hours were advertised.

When it came to staying open, however, it was a different story, he said.

“They didn’t stay open and their excuse was that it was quiet, so they closed. We had a lot of negative feedback from shoppers who’d come in to town hoping to do all their shopping.”

“Is it apathy, is it an old fashioned attitude? We get the business because we’re open and that’s what people expect. Even if all of the town was open on the Sunday before Christmas, that would be a good start.”

Women are more likely to enter the teaching profession than men because they are more maternal.

At least, that is the view of one Ashburton principal, who partly attributes Mid Canterbury’s male teacher drought to a lack of men interested in teaching as a career.

Ministry of Education figures show that as of September 2012, just 20 per cent of Ashburton teachers were male.

Ashburton Christian School principal Tim Kuipers told the Guardian yesterday that while some people may not agree with his view, he believed men were more interested in fields such as engineering, rather than teaching.

“Women have a natural maternal instinct,” he said.

“It’s more in their genetic make-up.”

Ashburton Christian School had more male teachers than females in 2013, which Mr Kuipers called an “anomaly”.

He said he hired the best ap-

plicant for a teaching position, and the applicant’s gender was not a factor.

“While you want a male, I never make a decision just because they’re a male,” he said.

Ashburton Christian School had three male teachers and two female teachers in 2013, but Mr Kuipers said the school would have just one male teacher next year.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy told the Guardian earlier this week that male teachers were being “scared off ” the

profession after a recent string of high profile sex abuse cases involving teachers.

Mr Murphy said having an allegation made against them could not only ruin a teacher’s career, it could also ruin their life.

Ministry of Education head of sector enablement and support Dr Graham Stoop told the Guardian this week there was some indication the status of the profession was also an inhibiting factor for some men, leading them to choose other professions.

Annual calf sale benefits IHC by $65,000

More than $65,000 was raised for the Ashburton branch IHC, at the IHC calf sale yesterday morning.

In its 26th year, 388 calves, donated by local farmers, were sold by auction at the Ashburton saleyards.

Of those, 188 calves were offered on behalf of IHC. The remainder were sold to benefit Mt Somers Springburn, Rakaia, Wakanui and Longbeach schools, and the Mayfield A&P Association.

PGG Wrightson dairy livestock rep Victor Schikker said the sale attracted strong interest from buyers as far afield as Rangiora and South Canterbury. There were no North Island bidders this year.

Ninety per cent of the calves on offer were friesian bulls, and the remainder mixed-sex Hereford-cross.

The top line of 159kg calves fetched $440, with the average price sitting around the $355 mark.

A driver was stopped by police and found to be driving while suspended at 1.15am yesterday. The person’s vehicle was impounded.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a rubbish fire on Robinson Street shortly after 8pm on Wednesday.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a car crash at the corner of Lagmhor Road and Anne Street at 6.45am yesterday.

The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out at 2am yesterday, to a car fire on Rakaia Terrace Road.

The car was parked on the side of the road and no one was there.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to ATS where an overheating lightbulb had triggered the alarm system shortly before 5pm yesterday Firefighters spent yesterday afternoon at a vegetation fire near Hinds, determined to ensure it was fully extinguished before the next nor’west blast hit. Hinds volunteer rural fire chief Dave Kingsbury said the fire was in a line of old trees on the boundary of a Tilsons Road property and it’s believed it started after embers from a burning pile about 60 metres away were transferred in a wind gust.

Firefighters from Hinds, Temuka, Geraldine, Rangitata and Willowby attended and their focus was both on putting out the fire in the trees, and the fire in the original burning pile given strong nor’west winds were again forecast to hit last night. Firefighters were called at around 1.30pm and they were still there by late afternoon, to ensure the fire did not flare up again in strong winds.

The IHC calf sale has been running nationally for 30 years and has raised more than $28 million for IHC. All the money raised in each district goes to the local branch.

Business is definitely not booming at the Ashburton Library. For the second month in a row book issues at the library have fallen, with numbers for the year to date now down by more than 5500. The rate of decline is escalating with a fall of 1400 in September and 2100 last month. Issue numbers are dropping most significantly in fiction books. Library membership, however, remains strong and sat at 11,751 at the end of October.

Transport on the table Industry leaders and Mayor Damon Odey met with Aoraki Polytechnic management to discuss plans for new Transport and Logistics qualifications which will begin for the first time in 2015.

The qualifications are being developed in direct response to feedback from Canterbury businesses who earlier this year identified a skills shortage of suitably qualified truck drivers due to an aging workforce, and a desire to lift the professional image of careers in the transport industry.

Operations Manager Garry Aitken from Temuka Transport said, “Our district has the biggest demand on drivers per head of population than just about anywhere in the country. Right now, collectively we are probably looking at a shortfall of 50 drivers within our hub. With the average age of class 5 drivers at 57, we need to prepare for the future and have people trained to fill these jobs.”

“The image of the industry needs to change,” Aitken said. “As a class 5 driver you have the opportunity to operate a half a million dollar piece of machinery, it also allows for male and females to be involved in todays’ environment as duties are a lot more user friendly than they were in the

past, it is professional and can offer attractive career opportunities for all.

Aoraki Polytechnic Chief Executive Alex Cabrera said, “The qualifications are a great example of what can be achieved when industry and education work together. Industry involvement is essential in ensuring that we continue to provide the most relevant and practical skills for our community.”

A qualification through Aoraki would mean drivers not only get a strong theoretical understanding of the principals around driving but also practical experience under their belts. Providing a pathway for drivers allows the industry to be seen as a professional career.”

The wholesale destruction of road signs was not uncommon around the district, with five stop and give way signs destroyed in Wakanui last week, Mr Dalziel said.

The council was determined to catch the people destroying community property, but catching vandals required a community effort, he said.

“We need help in bringing the people responsible for the destruction to account. The community needs to help stop this type of thing happening and identify and report the offenders.”

To ensure signs were replaced quickly, the council needed to hear as soon as people spotted damaged or missing signs.

Vandals smashing road signs are putting motorists’ lives at risk says Ashburton District Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel.

A trail of destruction was left down Thompsons Track on Sunday night, when 12 road signs were knocked over by vandals. Some of these were stop or give way signs and their destruction could have led to an intersection accident, he said.

In addition to the intersection control signs, chevrons and road direction signs were also destroyed.

“Council immediately replaced the regulatory signs and is working on getting new directional signs and chevrons installed. The cost of this latest round of vandalism is expected to be between $2000 and $3000,” Mr Dalziel said..

This is on top of the $17,000 of ratepayers’ money already spent fixing vandalised road signs this year.

Tentative inquiries made on pyschoactive products shop A strong signal has been sent to the Ashburton community that a psychoactive products outlet could be on the radar for the inner town.

The Ashburton District Council has received a request from a potential trader wanting certification that a property they were considering running a business from, complied with the council’s local approved products policy (LAPP).

While the property did comply and was within the area where the products could be sold, as defined by the policy, council environmental services group

manager Jane Donaldson said it could be more than a year before any licences were actually issued by the Ministry of Health.

The council’s LAPP defines an area bounded by the East Street Green, Havelock, Moore and Cass Streets as the only area where sales of psychoactive substances that have been cleared by the Ministry of Health, can be made.

Father Christmas is preparing to make his first appearance of the season in Mid Canterbury on Sunday.

And he will arrive in style, on a steam train.

The jolly man in red will be guest of honour at the Tinwald Christmas Festival, which has been held annually for the last 40 years.

Craft, food and other stalls will feature at the festival in the Tinwald Domain.

Organiser Ann Craig said Santa’s arrival at the Plains railway was always a highlight each year.

Children would gather on the platform as the train arrived, and Santa would alight with lollies.

He would then go to the small church in the Plains Museum grounds, where children would be able to sit on his knee and tell him what they wanted for Christmas.

Sun strike warning Ashburton Police are warning motorists to be wary of sun strike after an early morning crash in Tinwald yesterday morning.

Ashburton Police sergeant Janine Bowden said a car and a flat deck ute collided at the intersection of Lagmhor Road and Anne Street at about 6.45am.

“The car was on Anne Street turning right (east) onto Lagmhor Road when it crashed (tboned) into a flat deck ute travelling west on Lagmhor Road,” Ms Bowden said.

The car had only two occupants and the ute one occupant. Nobody in either vehicle was injured as a result of the crash.

Ms Bowden said a preliminary investigation had found the driver of the car to be at fault and sun strike had been determined as the cause of the crash.

She said it was a timely reminder about the dangers of sun strike and driving to the conditions at either end of the day.

Members of the Australian Salvation Army Band are performing in a free concert in Ashburton tonight at the Salvation Army Citadel on the corner of Cass and Cameron streets. The brass band features 35 visiting Australians in a toe-tapping performance. The concert starts at 7pm.

Population growing Births continue to outstrip deaths in the Ashburton District. During the first nine months of this year 340 babies were born in the district, with 204 deaths occurring.

The gap between births and deaths has fluctuated over the past five years from 38 per cent more births than deaths in 2009 to a high of 60 per cent in 2012.

The district is on target to hit 450 births for the year. Figures released

by Statistics New Zealand show the district’s official population at June 30 was 32,800, up 500 on the same period last year. Since 2006 when the population was 28,000, it has grown by at least 500 people every year.

One dead in house fire A person has died in a house fire in Christchurch. Police, Fire and Ambulance attended a house in Woodhouse Street in Linwood where one person has died. Police and a fire investigator were at the scene to investigate the fire. No further details were available. The fire in Linwood is the second fatal house fire in Christchurch in recent months.

Plaque a tribute to a rare plant

Seventy years ago, Hinds School’s elderly caretaker would tell many a story of the old days to pupils.

Bert Anett’s tales would include rich descriptions of the Canterbury Plains, once covered in native matagouri and a small-leafed shrub.

One of those pupils listening to his stories was Gilbert Donaldson, who today remembers Mr Anett pointing out an example of the smallleafed shrub in the school grounds.

By that time, the 1940s, it was just a remnant, the only remaining plant of the species for miles.

“He said ‘you look after that plant, there’s only one left’,” Mr Donaldson said.

This week Mr Donaldson fulfilled that wish, when he and Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin laid a plaque to mark the location of the

shrub, which continues to thrive today.

Hinds School managers previously retained a portion of the old fence the shrub had been climbing on, and built the school’s new fence around it.

Mr Donaldson said Mr Anett had been born in the 1800s, and was himself a former pupil of the school. He had lived at Ealing as a child and travelled to school and back more than 20 kilometres each way by horse.

“That and matagouri … they had to put gaiters on the horses because it was so thick on the plains,” Mr Donaldson said.

The plaque was funded with money raised at the 125th jubilee in 2006, and Mr Donaldson is a patron of the jubilee committee and member of the Hinds History Group. He is 79 and lives in Ashburton.

He estimated the plant, a muehlenbeckia complexa, was about 120 years old.

Shed destroyed

A fire which destroyed a shed on a pig farm near Methven early yesterday morning could have been burning for several hours before it was discovered.

The Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade was called shortly before 6am and when they arrived at the Pole Road property they found the owner dampening the destroyed shed down with a hose.

Methven station officer Gary Blackwell said the fire could have been going for hours; the roof had caved in and there was nothing firefighters could do to save it.

“It was a milling shed for pig food, and in some part of the night it must have gone up in fire because when we got there the actual roof had caved in and

most of the fire was actually out,” Mr Blackwell said.

“What it had done, it had burnt through the rafters and the iron from the roof had dropped down onto the hoppers.”

The shed – which measured about 30 metres by 10 metres – was in a farm yard with other sheds, but none of the other sheds were damaged.

“It was just lucky there was nothing in the shed that was quite flammable. It was only the rafters and that was about it. Everything else in the shed was metal and a lot of electrical gear,” Mr Blackwell said.

He believed the cause of the fire was probably electrical.

The Lauriston volunteer rural fire unit also attended.

he irony is rich and treacle-thick but it is not surprising that the Ashburton District Council received just one public submission on a draft policy dealing with consultation and engagement.

For one thing, it is hard to imagine Mr and Mrs J. Citizen of West Street abandoning their busy day to write a submission on a worthy-but-dull policy about how the council should consult on its policies.

For another, it is hard to see how something as onerous and time-sapping as writing a submission is the most effective way to encourage people to engage on a policy about effective engagement.

These were among the points raised – much more effectively than here – by the Ashburton Citizens’ Association in what was the only submission to the council’s proposed significance and engagement policy.

The association said the council was too reliant on written submissions and that over time, people had become disillusioned, apathetic and frustrated at being disregarded.

It also said there was a difference between the council consulting on a specific issue and the community actually participating and having a voice in the decision making.

The fact the association was the only outfit to make a submission makes it very hard to say its observations about the roots of ratepayer apathy are wrong.

Council watchers will say too much has happened over the past decade that has made ratepayers wary of the council’s motives when it purports to seek public comment.

Some feel it ignored too many people to push ahead with the second Tinwald bridge and that the new heritage and art gallery was pushed through without sufficient support.

That legacy will be hard to shake, but the council has made a good start in the way it consulted on wheelie bins and with the simple tick-box, online methods being used to consult on a hydroslide for the EA Networks Centre.

That more than 1000 hydroslide survey forms have been returned shows people want to have their say on the things that matter to them. All is not lost.

nce again it was a pleasure to be involved with the promotion of Toot for Tucker. I always enjoy rolling up in the Hokonui four-wheel-drive and heading around the streets of Ashburton tooting away for an hour each year around this time.

I was absolutely thrilled to read in the Guardian on Wednesday that this year’s collection of food exceeded all other years in the past.

That put a smile back on my dial, which had disappeared on Tuesday when the girls at work had told me there were people on Facebook posting their disapproval at the noise being made by Toot for Tucker.

I know it’s tough sometimes getting babies off to sleep, I’ve been there and done that! But was it really THAT BAD, you were driven to Facebook to vent?

To the people whinging about the noise from Toot for Tucker. SO SORRY you were put out for one whole hour, so we could fill the food bank. Let’s hope you never go through tough times and have to use it.

Well done to Cynthia and the County Lions, the Property Brokers team for sponsoring it and all the collectors, sorters and donators. Great job and I’ll see you next year.

Now for a positive Facebook story that far outweighs the comments of a few shortsighted and selfish posters.

Tuesday morning we had a call at the station from the local police saying they had a two-to-three-year-old boy in blue PJs at the station and could we put a call out over the air for his parents.

I had just enough time to mention it before the end of my shift at 9am. I thought I’d fire it up on the Hoops on Hokonui Facebook page as well to try and cover more bases.

Within minutes it had been shared over 50 times and over 4500 people had viewed the call for help.

Not long after, the wee fella was back home safe and sound.

A neighbour had read the post and recognised the description and popped next door

We made it from Wakanui Road to just past the Devon Tavern. One of the barmaids spotted me and said: “That looks like a Hooper kid, I better call his mum”.

Apparently I was on my way to a toy store that used to be in the Triangle. In Mum’s defence, she did have three boys under four. Enough to keep anyone’s hands full and give them plenty of grey hairs.

Ferry boss gets ten years The head of the company that operated South Korea’s ill-fated ferry, which capsized killing more than 300 people, most of them high school students, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A court in the southern city of Gwangju yesterday determined that Kim Han-sik, chief executive of Chonghaejin Marine Co, had allowed the ferry to be routinely overloaded and approved illegal renovations to increase its passenger capacity.

The 6825-tonne Sewol was carrying 476 people when the overloaded, ill-balanced ship commanded by what the court termed as an “incompetent” crew capsized off the southern coast on April 16.

Kim, 71, who was convicted of manslaughter, was also found guilty of allowing the ship’s cargo to be left unsecured in breach of safety standards.

There are no Australian cars among the 21 finalists for this year’s Wheels magazine Car of the Year award, with local manufacturers failing to provide any substantially new models for consideration. A revamped Ford Falcon was deemed ineligible because its changes weren’t considered significant enough, while Holden and Toyota didn’t stump up new local models. All three carmakers will cease manufacturing in Australia in coming years, with Ford closing in 2016 and Holden and Toyota in 2017.

Warship seizes heroin An Australian warship has seized heroin worth more than $150 million from a smuggling vessel off the east coast of Africa. It was the second time in two months the frigate HMAS Toowoomba has been responsible for a big drug haul. In the latest bust, Toowoomba intercepted a vessel in international waters carrying about 388 kilograms of heroin. The haul, which had an estimated Australian street value of $155 million, was subsequently dumped in the ocean.

Miss Honduras was fatally shot as she tried to escape her sister’s jealous boyfriend, police and reports say.

Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, who had been due to fly to London to compete in the Miss World beauty pageant, disappeared with her sister Sofia Trinidad Alvarado six days ago after a party, sparking an exhaustive search.

La Prensa newspaper reported that police were investigating whether Trinidad’s boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, shot Sofia Trinidad in the head after he became jealous when he saw her dancing with another man.

He then reportedly shot her beauty-queen sister twice in the back as she tried to flee.

Chief detective Leandro Osorio said the bodies of Maria Jose and her 23-year-old sister had been found buried along

the banks of the Aguagual River in the town of Arada, in violence-plagued Honduras’s northwest.

“We are 100 per cent sure that it’s them,” Osorio said.

Police then arrested Ruiz and his alleged accomplice, seizing a Colt-45 pistol and two vehicles.

Security Minister Arturo Corrales said there was “no doubt” that Ruiz was behind the crime and that he had been helped by another man, Aris Maldonado Mejia.

“We think that Plutarco led the crime, materially and intellectually,” Corrales said.

Police are investigating additional suspects who they believe tried to help cover up the shooting, including by cleaning and repainting a pick-up used in the crime.

Yesterday, police also arrested the resort’s owner, Ventura Diaz; his wife Elizabeth Alva-

rado; and their daughter Irma Nicolle.

Organisers of the Miss World pageant, which begins tomorrow, sent their condolences and announced a tribute this weekend in honour of the slain sisters.

“We are devastated by this terrible loss of two young women, who were so full of life,” Julia Morley, the pageant’s chairwoman, said in a statement. “We will be holding a special service with all of the Miss World contestants on Sunday, where we will be honouring the lives of Maria Jose Alvarado and Sofia Trinidad, and say prayers for them and their family.”

Alvarado, who turned heads with her gleaming smile and wavy chestnut hair, was in her last year of university at the Northern Polytechnic Institute, where she studied computer science.

The full bench of the Fair Work Commission has reserved its decision on whether it will hear an alleged Melbourne workplace bullying matter, which could evolve into a national test case. NZ singer murdered An ex-soldier accused of murdering a Gold Coast nightclub singer said he had no choice but to kill the man in revenge for the rape of his girlfriend, a court has heard.

Matthew Cox, 27, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Sex ‘N’ Chocolate singer Tony Williams in his Mermaid Waters unit on December 23, 2011. Crown Prosecutor David Meredith told the Brisbane Supreme Court that Cox tracked down Mr Williams and violently bashed him to death with a hammer, believing his girlfriend had once been raped by the singer and borne his child. The delay was announced at the same time as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called a snap election two years before required.

His reasoning for this was to consolidate power for his party, the Liberal Democrats, and to gauge the popularity of his drastic economic policies commonly known as Abenomics.

It is widely thought that Abe will be re-elected although his popularity is falling, as the Japanese people look for stability.

The Bank of Japan has kept quantitative easing at its current level of 80 trillion yen per annum.

Governor Harukiko Kuroda said that the economy is continuing to recover moderately although acknowledged that there are still some weaknesses.

He stopped short of criticising Prime Minister Abe’s decision to delay the second tax hike but emphasised that there is a need for the continuation of fiscal reforms.

Governor Glenn Stevens painted a rather downbeat picture of the Australian economy which has been stalling as some of its major trading partners are seeing slower than expected growth. He is expecting growth to moderate over the next few years as the economy reshuffles investment spending away from the resources sector and into non-mining activities. This is currently happening but at a much slower pace.

In local news, the latest Global Dairy Trade auction was held this week and saw a 3.1 per cent decline in the average price of dairy products. The drop came as a surprise as the last two auctions have shown small but steady increases and had endeared analysts to believe that the price which has fallen to its lowest level in five years might be on its way back up.

This latest drop has put in jeopardy the already shaky $5.30 farm gate milk price forecast from Fonterra.

Analysts are expecting the forecast payout to drop to $4.55 at Fonterra’s December announcement.

Local market ‘chugs along’ M arkets this week responded to a sleuth of information including surprisingly negative GDP figures from Japan as well as central bank announcements from Australia, England, Japan and the US. Australia’s ASX200 continued to battle against slowing growth in China pushing iron ore prices to a new five-year low. Both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones in the US extended to new highs this week, with the S&P 500 index reaching its 43rd all time high of the year.

However, the winning streak was snapped for these indices when the Federal Reserve released the minutes from its last meeting which gave little away.

Locally, our market continues to chug along and so far is up 16.6 per cent for 2014.

Japan stole headlines this week in terms of economic news as the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted for the second quarter running, putting the world’s third largest economy into a technical recession.

A sales tax hike of 3 per cent that was implemented in April is being heralded as the reason for the drop in consumer spending.

This was the first of the two proposed tax hikes that were scheduled to help Japan reduce public debt which currently stands at 240 per cent of GDP, one of the highest levels in the

Xero, the cloud-based accounting software firm, widened its first-half loss after spending more on staff and marketing. The Wellingtonbased company’s loss swelled to $24.5 million in the six months ended September 30, from a loss of $17.1 million a year earlier. Sales rose 79 per cent to $55.8 million, as its subscription revenue increased 85 per cent to $52 million. - NZME

The Food and Grocery Council is standing by its claims supermarket Countdown was “unfair” in its dealings with suppliers despite the Commerce Commission saying it found no evidence of illegal behaviour by the company.

The competition watchdog has completed a nine-month investigation into allegations first aired by former Labour MP Shane Jones that Countdown and its Australian-owned parent Progressive sought retrospective payments from suppliers.

The payments were purportedly to cover Countdown’s losses on some product lines which did not generate expected sales and were said to be made under the threat of suppliers’ products being

removed from Countdown’s shelves. However, the commission yesterday said that based on the evidence it gathered it “does not believe that Progressive has breached any of the laws it enforces and it will not be taking any action against Progressive”.

Mr Jones, who made his allegations of “extortion” and “blackmail” under the protection of parliamentary privilege, was unwilling to comment but the Food and Grocery Council, which represents suppliers, said it wasn’t surprised by the commission’s findings given New Zealand’s current legal framework.

Future hi-tech luxury German car giant Mercedes says the car of the future will be all about comfort - and the four seater design even has a coffee table built in for passengers, who face each other.

The front seats of the car can be turned around and passengers can spend their time relaxing or working, while screens can show films - or live camera feeds from the outside world.

“With this visionary interior concept we are defining the luxury of the future,’ said Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. The pivotal feature of the innovative interior concept is the variable seating system, with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a face-to-face seat configuration.

This enables the front passengers to turn around and talk directly to the other passengers while on the move.

Or to focus their attention towards the front as necessary for manual driving, with an extendable steering wheel.

“We are convinced that autonomous driving will be a central factor on the way to comfortable, accident-free driving,’ says Dr. Herbert Kohler, Daimler’s head of corporate research and sustainability.

Smartphone security Mobile security firm Lookout on Wednesday warned that Androidpowered smartphones or tablets are being targeted with malicious software that puts them at the mercy of hacker overlords. The persistence and sophistication of malware dubbed NotCompatible is another sign that cyber criminals are hitting smartphones and tablets with tactics and tenacity once reserved for desktop computers, according to Lookout security researcher Jeremy Linden.

“Mobile is becoming the dominant computing platform and, because it is so ubiquitous, we are seeing heightened malware targeting it,” Linden said.

Snooping with God View Uber Technologies confirmed yesterday that it is investigating whether one of its general managers violated the popular car-booking service’s privacy policies by snooping on a reporter’s ride. The probe stems from allegations that Josh Mohrer, general manager of Uber’s New York office, used a company tracking tool called “God View” to monitor the location of a BuzzFeed reporter earlier this month. Internet news service BuzzFeed first reported the investigation. In a statement, Uber said access to the personal data of anyone using its car service is limited to “legitimate business purposes”.

It also has screens which can either play films or show the outside world.

“The vehicle’s surroundings, whether pedestrians, other road users or the local build-

ings, are also brought into the interior and portrayed as fluid all-round information on displays.

“With our innovative interior concept of a luxury lounge for an autonomous vehicle of the future, we are giving a specific outlook on our ideas of future mobility,” said Dr Kohler.

“This interior concept forms an essential part of a new overall vehicle concept which we will be unveiling at the CES in Las Vegas.”

Auckland IT blowout An Auckland Council IT project considered key to delivering the promised savings of the “Super City” model faces a budget blowout of up to $100 million. The “NewCore” programme is designed to consolidate the outdated operating systems of the eight local bodies that merged in 2010 to become the Auckland Council and has an approved budget of $71 million. The first stage was supposed to go live in May with the project completed

by June 2016, but council bosses yesterday confirmed a delay of 12 months. Chief operating officer Dean Kimpton also confirmed more money was needed but would not comment on specific figures as councillors were discussing a briefing paper behind closed doors yesterday. But sources say the total cost could end up $100 million more than the budget.

In brief Big golf weekend The Methven Golf Club has two big days of golf set for the weekend with their annual Two Day MultiSponsored Tournament. The pairs tournament has received 170 entries who will take to the tee tomorrow for 18 holes of four ball and then a combined stroke on Sunday.

Mass start in the mount The Tinwald Cycling Club rolls into Mt Somers on Sunday. After running a series of handicap races the open grade has their first mass start before a 45km journey around the area’s foothills. Last week’s 48km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block was taken out by the evergreen Tony Ward, but the mass start throws the sealed handicap event wide open. The Juniors and Division 2 will race over a 20km handicap from 12.45pm before the open grade race is scheduled to start at 2pm.

Lowry Cup The Lowry Cup will find a new home on Sunday after the knockout finals at the Methven Bowling Club. Defending champion, Methven bowler Jeff Nowell, was among those that failed to make the cut for the finals from the 40 that turned out to qualify for the premier men’s open singles event. Among the 14 finalists are last year’s runner-up, Adrian Kemp, the 2012-13 winner Darren Turner and Bruce White, who was the tournament winner in 2011-12.

Back on the diamonds Softball returns to the diamonds at Argyle Park after taking Show weekend off. The junior grades are all go from 9am with T-ball and little league action throughout the morning. The Senior Mixed grade takes over in the afternoon where the defending champion Hampstead Hawks will look to swoop on the Demons Rebels, while on diamond two Demons Renegades are up against last season’s runners-up, the Bedrock Panthers. In the second round match at 3pm the Hampstead Warriors will do battle with the Rusty Demons.

Barrett in coveted 10 jersey

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Warren Gatland was right Beauden Barrett will start at first-five for the All Blacks against Wales on Sunday morning.

Wales coach Gatland was keen midweek to state Barrett would get the nod over Aaron Cruden, Dan Carter and Colin Slade, but his opposite Steve Hansen, a fellow New Zealander, has shrugged off the attempt at gaining the upper hand by saying: “I don’t care he still has to stop us. We have to stop what they do.

“You can get caught up in it.”

Hansen, who appeared relaxed when announcing the team to the New Zealand media in Cardiff ahead of the test against his former team at the Millennium Stadium, said Barrett deserved his shot ahead of the others despite having played only about 25 minutes in the past three weeks.

The other key selections were fullback and right wing, with Ben Smith and Charles Piutau winning those respective positions.

Israel Dagg has been left out of the squad.

Barrett, who last started a test on October 18 against Australia in Brisbane, wasn’t required for the test against the USA in Chicago, played the final quarter against England at Twickenham, and again wasn’t named in the squad for Scotland at Murrayfield last weekend.

This is a big opportunity to consolidate himself over Cruden in the pecking order.

Cruden started against the USA and England, with Carter starting against the Scots, where his lack of recent game time showed in a rusty performance.

“We’ve seen Crudes on this tour in one of the big games against England and we wanted to see Beauden against one as well,” said Hansen.

The versatile and in-form Slade will provide cover at No10

on the reserves bench, with neither Cruden nor Carter required there.

“We’re using this tour to find out more about the guys we’ve got and previously we’ve shown that when we’ve picked Beauden it’s difficult for Crudes to come off the bench because we don’t think he’s got enough versatility,” Hansen said.

Asked if he had considered putting Carter on the bench, Hansen said: “If he had come through the other day probably a little bit better he might have been on the bench but it’s impossible to ask a guy who has played the amount of rugby he’s had to not be rusty.

“For him it’s great that he’s got confidence that his body is right, we’ve got confidence his body is right.

Mid Canterbury club rugby recruitment is well underway four months out from the kickoff of the new club season.

The five senior sides have all begun working on their teams for the 2015 season, finalising coaches and putting the feelers out for potential new players,

but they may have a new team to contend with.

This year Allenton went within one default of folding in Senior B, but the club are looking into re-establishing a senior team for 2015.

Allenton pulled out of the senior ranks back in 2009 but with a yet to be announced new coaching and management

Time for batsmen to shine

As usual the bowlers have dominated the opening rounds of the Pritchard Shield senior cricket competition, and after a week off the batsmen will be looking to strike back in tomorrow’s third round.

With no matches over Christchurch Show weekend Coldstream will be hoping a weekend off will see their form also return after they apparently took a two-week break following their Twenty20 triumph.

Coldstream have failed to break triple figures in their two losses to Allenton and Lauriston B but will need to find some

form at home to an unbeaten Tech.

The Tech bowlers have been on form, with Harry Jones taking a hat-trick in his five wicket bag against Allenton for eight wickets so far in the competition.

Methven will also be after a change in fortunes after scores of 59 and 63 in the opening round losses but newcomers Lauriston B will be no pushover, already claiming the win over Coldstream.

In the other match the unbeaten Lauriston A host Allenton.

New recruit Englishman Matt Haworth has already become a key contributor for his

team, while Bevan Richan has scored a century and secured a five wicket bag as Lauriston loom as the early shield contenders, while Allenton will be out to bounce back from a loss to Tech.

With rain forecast to fall around midday, however, they may all have another weekend off.

Meanwhile, the Ashburton College 1st XI have a double header in the Ashburton Domain this weekend.

Tomorrow they host Christchurch Boys’ High School 3rd XI in the Canterbury Secondary Schools 1st XI two day cup competition.

College have suffered heavy

defeats in all three of their two day fixtures so far with the batting proving a big problem, but one they will hopefully rectify over the two days with plenty at stake.

On Sunday they meet Timaru Boys’ for the second time in a three match one-day series to determine what one-day competition grade the sides will play in when the secondary school season restarts after Christmas.

Timaru won the first meeting by 10 runs in Timaru on Labour Day, leaving the college side needing a victory at home to force a decider or be relegated down a grade if they lose.

Hazlewood stakes claims Form has Josh Hazlewood in contention for a Test debut, while fitness has the 23-yearold convinced he is ready for cricket’s big stage. Hazlewood is the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing one-day international (ODI) series against South Africa, having snared nine scalps and piloted Australia to a 2-1 lead.

Since making his ODI debut at the age of 19, Hazlewood has been touted as the future of the Australian pace attack alongside James Pattinson, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

Clarke still hopeful Hopes remain Michael Clarke will be fit for the first Test against India, but the reality is the Australian captain’s chronic hamstring injury is a ticking time bomb that could threaten his career at any moment.

Clarke has been ruled out of playing Sheffield Shield for NSW next week after scans revealed a complex recurrence of the injury he first suffered in Zimbabwe four months ago. The 33-year-old’s last previous hamstring setback sidelined him for 10 weeks and Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said yesterday it was still not clear how long the skipper would be out for this time around.

Gallen mends bridges Paul Gallen says he and NRL chief Dave Smith have mended a bridge and moved on from his controversial abusive tweet. In Brisbane yesterday to promote his upcoming boxing bout against former teammate Anthony Watts, Gallen suggested his relationship with Smith was intact despite the contents of the Twitter post that led to the Cronulla star being fined $35,000. Gallen revealed he’d met with Smith to talk it through. “It was done behind closed doors and in a good way,” he said. “He’s been all right, to be honest with you. He’s even sent me a text message or two.”

By andrew aLderson An unbeaten record 10th wicket partnership of 80 between Pakistan’s Sarfraz Ahmed and Rahat Ali has spoilt New Zealand’s chances of banking a decent lead on the fourth day of the second cricket test in Dubai.

The pair came together at 312 for nine and advanced the cause to 392, even with the visitors opting to extend lunch by half an hour. Ahmed was not out 111 and Ali 16, having reduced the deficit to 11 runs as the Guardian went to print.

Ahmed was the main redeemer, making his third test century in his 12th test and his jubilation showed as he careered wildly towards the enclave of Pakistani fans who have packed themselves into one section of the otherwise empty cauldron.

The wicketkeeper-batsman applied a controlled, aggressive approach, gulping up runs as the tail faltered.

He looked every bit a batsman with an average over 40 as he coaxed his partners through the final throes.

Ahmed, who made a century against Australia last month, has been not out in the teens in three subsequent innings.

His form didn’t betray him here with the opportunity to pounce on a New Zealand attack vulnerable to complacency at nine down.

He held his bat grip low and snug, ready to rifle his wrists through anything with width.

It also helped him loft the ball through the legside or straight.

Gala Cup glory up for grabs

Neil McCann and Ashleigh Leonard are out to defend their titles as Mid Canterbury’s top singles players in the Gala Cup championships at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre this weekend.

McCann won a maiden title last year to end Rhys Cromie’s stranglehold on the men’s title.

Cromie was ousted by Simon Jordon in the quarter-finals, only for Jordon to fall to McCann 6-0 6-1 in the final.

Cromie is still a strong contender to secure a record eighth win, with his last

title in 2012-13 equalling the record set

by A.C Browne in the 1950s.

Defending women’s champion, Ashleigh Leonard, is chasing her third straight women’s singles and doubles title with partner Stacey Hopwood. Leonard was unable to defend her other Gala Cup title earlier this month, the Gala Cup mixed doubles, when she and her father Peter lost the final to husband and wife combination Deane and Jo Taylor.

As well as the A grade men’s and women’s singles and doubles titles, the A reserve players will also battle for their titles over the two days.

Ashburton’s teenage superbike racer, Bailie Perriton, has taken his share of tumbles racing across the Tasman, but won’t be holding back in this weekend’s final round of the Australian Superbike Championship.

The 16-year-old currently sits in fourth place in the Ninja FX300 Championship even though he has come off the bike in two of the five rounds.

“I’ve had a few tumbles, but that’s what happens when you’re pushing as hard as you

can to keep up at the front.

“It just doesn’t work out sometimes.”

Eleven points off third place, Perriton’s focus for the weekend is stepping up to the podium.

“It doesn’t really worry me what the points gap is, as long as I get there.”

The current New Zealand 250cc champion has had a less than ideal preparation, having not ridden a 300cc machine since the last round in Victoria back in October – spending time testing his 600cc bike ahead of the New Zealand Superbike Series.
