Armed robbery at Ashburton dairy Young guns fire on court P16

Ashburton police are investigating the robbery of the Alford Forest Road Dairy yesterday morning.

The incident occurred around 10.40am when a man entered the store with what was thought to be a sword, demanding money and cigarettes.

The man was described as being of large, solid build. He was wearing a white sweatshirt shirt over a grey coloured hoody that was pulled up, black pants and blue shoes with white flat soles and white laces.

After being given money and cigarettes, the offender fled north on Clark Street in a vehicle described as a blue station wagon.

Police would like to hear from anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area at the time of the robbery.

The dairy was still trading yesterday, despite the robbery.

Home after earthquake ordeal

“The ground started cracking under me,” an Ashburton student said following the M7.8 quake early last Monday morning.

Eight-year-old Isaiah Cuthers has just returned home after five days of being stranded in Kaikoura.

Isaiah was staying in Hapuku where he and his father decided to go for a weekend away.

“I was dreaming about an earthquake and it just happened.

“My dad threw me onto the floor and then got on top of me, then we went to check if everyone was ok,” he said.

The pair, along with Isaiah’s cousins, then had to evacuate to higher ground because of the tsunami warnings.

The next day Isaiah and his friend Tane helped collect water, get a barbecue to their house and find cooking pots.

Isaiah said the initial earthquake was really scared, but the frequent aftershocks afterward also freaked him out.

The next day they travelled around to make contact with people and one of the people they were with was driving a truck that flipped after it went over a boulder on the road.

He said they saw a car that had been crushed under a tree but the people had gotten out and were unharmed.

Further down the road his father got out to check a bridge ahead of them when a big aftershock hit.

Isaiah said he could see the road beneath him cracking during the shaking.

Putting local wine on the map By linda ClarkE Isaiah Cuthers is glad to be back home in Ashburton after his terrifying ordeal in Kaikoura.

181116-CE-007 said they got to Kaikoura to try get some food and diesel but none was available, and on the Wednesday when they tried to get a helicopter out they were told Isaiah had to be attended by an adult.

On the Wednesday he also saw helicopters flying in and out of Kaikoura, an Air Force plane go overhead and the international ships come in.

Eventually on Friday morning a Ngai Tahu helicopter was able to get Isaiah and his friend and cousin out and into Cheviot, where he was given a ride to Rangiora and finally reunited with his mother.

Mum Jane Morgan said she was relieved to finally have him back home and safe.

“It’s been a scary few days that’s for sure. It was just frustrating that I couldn’t get through to find out what was happening,” she said.

Finally on Monday afternoon Morgan was given a call letting her know her son was safe.

Charlie Hill is on a mission to put Mid Canterbury on the wine map.

He wants people to know the district produces more than just milk, and that it produces pretty good pinot gris, Riesling and even sparkling wine.

Hundreds turned up yesterday to check out his 9ha vineyard on the outskirts, where he tends nearly 10,000 vines and grows grapes he delivers to Waipara

new sparkling pearl vintage. It is a story often told to tourists who like the fact the vineyard is not off the beaten track, but less well known in his home town.

Hill said the open day would change that and visitors from as far afield as Christchurch and Geraldine were among those to taste his wines.

“I haven’t heard a bad comment all day. It’s been terrific,” he said.

The day included food and craft sellers as well.

Falling tree injures two people Two people were injured and four cars damaged when a large tree fell on them in Auckland’s Cornwall Park yesterday.

A 30m cottonwood tree fell over in the car park just below the restaurant and information centre at the park at about 2.15pm.

The two people suffered moderate injuries and no one was trapped in the cars, a police me-

A safe haven for big business

A call for the decentralisation of government departments in Wellington could play right into Ashburton’s hands.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters wants more of these departments located in regional New Zealand, saying the wisdom of centralisation needs to be reexamined in the wake of this week’s catastrophic earthquake that ground business to a halt in Wellington.

“Lives could easily have been lost in the Statistics NZ building had the earthquake struck in daylight hours.

There is no need for departments such as the Department of Conservation to be based in Wellington and this week’s earthquake should initiate a major rethink,” Peters said.

He’s calling for a rethink on location of departments to ensure a natural disaster in one part of the country, in terms of continuing to do business, doesn’t cripple the

entire country. And that suggestion has been given a big tick by Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

If the move was made, the Ashburton District had plenty to offer, she said.

“We’re in the middle of the South Island, we’re close to an international airport and two ports and we have a supportive council that will do its best to facilitate any business inquiry.”

The cost of accommodating a business, government or not, was much lower in Ashburton than in

Wellington and that was matched by rates that would be significantly lower, Favel said.

“And we have space within our CBD and we have some pretty enthusiastic property developers. If government was considering relocating any department, we’d be a great choice.”

The council is currently reviewing how it delivers economic development in the district and as part of that review it would work with any government department or any business that might look to

relocate out of quake stricken areas, she said.

As more Wellington buildings are found to be damaged after last Monday’s 7.8 magnitude quake, Peters said it was made clear just how vulnerable New Zealand was with most of its government departments in one place.

Excessive centralisation of government departments in earthquake prone Wellington has been a mistake and more should be located in regional areas, Peters said.

Sculptures go under the hammer after symposium

The Ashburton Sculpture Symposium came to a close yesterday with 15 of the 21 pieces carefully crafted in the Ashburton Domain over the past few weeks sold at auction.

The event brought some of the best sculptors in the country to Mid Canterbury and the art community is already talking about the 2018 event.

Organiser Brent Holley was tired, but delighted, that so many people had been able to be a part of the journey, from the artists themselves to those that watched them work and those who bought pieces at the public auction in the domain’s Long Lawn yesterday.

Holley’s own piece of work, Balance, was voted People’s Choice by the public. It was bought by a Mid Canterbury man.

The piece was carved from Mt Somers limestone and Timaru bluestone and Holley said it was at attempt to restore balance in people’s lives.

“We have so many things out of balance in the environment and in our lives.”

All the pieces under the hammer yesterday were created by sculptors at the Ashburton Domain over a two-week period earlier this month. Those not sold are under negotiation.

Holley said the artwork would remain on the Long Lawn for another few days, until buyers made arrangements to collect their purchases.

Unsold works may remain longer.

He said the symposium was great exposure for the art of sculpting and he hoped more young people would think about taking it up.

Yesterday’s auction was run alongside a family festival with other craftspeople selling their wares.

NZ Army convoy arrives A second army convoy has reached quake-hit Kaikoura, where a poignant inter-denominational church service has been held in a park.

The HMNZS Canterbury is in Lyttelton, having delivered 186 more evacuees, 14 pets and one beehive to safety and is expected to return tomorrow.

All evacuations are now complete. The airport is open for commercial flights if anyone else

wants to leave town.

The navy ships from Canada, Australia and the US have left and are in Wellington Harbour.

Spirits were raised by pictures of five whales at play in a bay off the coastal town and by the service in Churchill Park attended by 400 people, which began with a minute’s silence.

The business of recovering from a magnitude 7.8 quake continues, with access the pressing

issue. Kaikoura is usually reached

by State Highway 1 but last Monday’s quake covered sections of the road in debris and severed the railway beside it.

Since the quake people have been evacuated on helicopters and the HMNZS Canterbury, and goods have been transported in the same way while an inland road was cleared.

The first army convoy of 27 trucks made it through on Friday

on the inland road, which is open only to emergency vehicles.

A convoy of six trucks and two other army vehicles arrived about 1pm yesterday at the New World Supermarket.

Five carried food, water and other supplies for the supermarket and one carried diesel, petrol and LPG. The inland road will become the most efficient and effective way of reaching Kaikoura.

Car hits house One person is dead after a car hit a house on Redoubt Road in the Auckland suburb of Flat Bush.

Emergency services attended the scene just after midday on Sunday.

Victim named The swimmer who died at Mt Maunganui has been named as 68-year-old Bruce Smith from Auckland. He was reported missing in the water about 11.30am on Saturday, and by the time paramedics arrived he’d been found but could not be resuscitated, police say.

Cub movement celebrates 100 years

Nearly 350 cubs and 150 scouting leaders and helpers came together in Ashburton on Saturday for a day of fun and games to mark 100 years of the cub movement.

Leader Lori Rusbatch said a large part of the day was games and activities, with a break to cut three large chocolate mud cakes baked for the occasion by Sim’s Bakery.

After a tea of barbecued sausages and hot chips cooked by the Ashburton Lions, the group packed around a traditional campfire for a final birthday celebration.

Rusbatch said it was a poignant end to a day thoroughly enjoyed by cubs and leaders who came from five different scout zones, including North Canterbury, Christchurch, Port Hills and South Canterbury.

Events have been taking place around New Zealand and the world to mark 100 years of cubbing and the Ashburton celebration at Mania-o-Roto park included many games of “olden” times. Rusbatch said games and activities at 15 points, or bases, included horse shoe throwing, pass the parcel, painting and a catapult. Another base covered the history of cubbing.

Rusbatch said the cub movement would change and adapt as it had over the past 100 years to stay relevant and fun for future generations.

“Young people still need an outlet to just muck around and do things. Kids don’t change; the kids of 100 years ago are the same as the kids now. They are still curious, they still want to know how things are made and will pull things apart. They still want to

have fun, roll down a bank and get grass in their hair.”

Rusbatch said there was a lot of work put in behind the scenes by leaders and helpers in the five zones for which she was grateful.

“It was so successful, those kids went home happy.”

Between 100 and 150 litres of sewage has leaked on to public land behind a commercial portaloo facility in Avondale. A witness at the scene said it looked like there has been a “poo tsunami”. The man said sewage had spilt on to an area of grass between the back of a portaloo business and the northwestern cycleway. Blue chemicals had been spread over the sewage – which luckily the man said was masking the smell.

“It’s stinky, but it’s mostly the chemical smell and luckily it’s quite windy, too,” he said.

Impressive season for Will

Will Graham is having a belter of a season.

The 16-year-old is ranked as the Most Valuable Player in the Cricket Express 1st XI Cup One Day 2016 competition so far in the season.

Will has scored an impressive 189 runs in the five matches he has played so far this season and he is enjoying it.

“It’s great to be in some form,” he said.

The left-hand batsman admits he has a watchful batting style and takes the chances when they are there, rather than slogging his way to a big score.

Will moved with his family from Australia to Ashburton a year ago and has done well on New Zealand wickets.

The conditions are the complete opposite to the ones he grew up on.

“The wickets are a lot different.

You have to get on the front foot a lot and the outfields are slower with the long grass.”

He is just as good with cricket ball in hand.

As an opening bowler, Will has bagged himself five wickets in the pre-Christmas season so far with his right arm fast bowling.

Will cannot remember a time when he has not bowled or batted, his family loves the sport and he does too.

If all goes well he would love to turn professional but like most fast bowlers, the body does not escape uninjured.

He started the team as a pure bowler but the team started needing him to bat more often, now he

sits comfortably as a middle order allrounder. Will’s favourite innings this season is when his team was down five wickets for just over 20 runs and they needed 170 to win.

He led the charge with a patient 50 and the team won in the second to last over.

Will enjoys being part of the team and contributing with both bat and ball.

“You make good friends playing cricket. With the other side too because you’re there for so long together.”

Although he has been sledged a few times while playing, particularly playing against Christchurch teams, Will does not chirp at other player much – if at all.

“I don’t see the point in it.”

Will hopes to continue the season and help his team out when called upon.

Future music stars given scholarships Three of the Ashburton District’s musical stars of the future have earned themselves a $50 scholarship from the Mid Canterbury Choir. The scholarships were presented at prizegiving ceremonies at Ashburton College, Mt Hutt College and Geraldine High School. Choir manager Carol Gunn said the scholarships are presented as a way of supporting young people who have a passion for choral singing.

Time for a tech time-out

BY WINSTON ALDWORTH, NZME Few things are as memorable as the first time you see the Mona Lisa. After winding your way through the many halls and galleries of the Louvre, finally the weary traveller reaches the painting hailed by many as the pinnacle of Western art.

And that first glimpse – the first encounter with Leonardo da Vinci’s crowning achievement – comes ... via the screen of some tourist’s phone.

Hordes mass around the painting, holding their phones aloft like a high-tech offering to an ancient lord.

In fact, the first glimpse a modern-day visitor to the Mona Lisa will see of the great painting is, in all likelihood, an image on someone else’s phone showing a whole lot of other people’s phones.

The screens held aloft at the back of the throng are simply capturing the image on those screens further forward.

Those at the back wait for their turn to shuffle forward and ruin the photo for someone else.

Peering out, somewhere beyond them all, the real thing is smirking at us.

It’s not just at galleries. I’ve witnessed the same scene playing out at major sports events and concerts. I got a fascinating look at the screen of some-

Good thing she got that photo though, as up until that point literally no one on Earth had ever taken a picture of Lewis Hamilton driving a Formula One car.

Now, I enjoy taking photos as much as the next snap-happy modern traveller. But things are

out of hand. Few photos are as rubbish as photos of people taking photos.

Hot tip: There’s nowhere on Earth that you will ever go that a better photographer hasn’t already been.

Trouble is, our phones are so good at taking pictures, and we’ve become so much better at

taking them. But we need to call for a technological time out. A full ban would be too much, but major tourist sites such as the Louvre should consider blocking out certain times of day for periods of no phone or camera use.

We might just appreciate the view a little more.

he café where I buy my chai latte has its Christmas tree up, a guy who lives near me has his Christmas lights up and my organised friends are doing their Christmas shopping.

There’s no denying it. Christmas is all but here.

There are other signs the year is winding down; uni students are back and re-adjusting to life under their parents’ roof, school prizegivings are happening and there are Christmas functions to attend.

There was a much-needed Christmas boost for dairy farmers last week when Fonterra announced it was increasing its forecast milk price payout to $6kgMS. The news was welcomed by all and could well be a lifeline for some struggling with growing debt after nearly three seasons.

Those farmers will lock in efficiency gains and look to a prosperous future in the years to come.

That is good news for Mid Canterbury because like it or not, our prosperity is linked to theirs. Our businesses, our schools and communities are all linked to theirs.

Their tight times mean local businesses are looking at ways to band together or stand out from the crowd to woo customers. Thirty-two local businesses have banded together for a shop local contest where customers can win $2500.

Taking a stand out from the crowd approach, local vineyard CharRees opened its doors to the public yesterday to tell wine-drinkers their unique story.

The story of their vineyard, in an area known for its dairy cows, is an interesting one and owner Charlie Hill loves surprising people with the fact Mid Canterbury grows good grapes too.

It is these little stories that our district needs to exploit too. Sell this local wine to tourists in our cafes and restaurants, alongside lamb or beef proudly advertised as being raised on the farm down the road.

No doubt there will be commercial agreements that stop this sort of arrangement, or make it difficult, but if tourists are here to soak up our scenery then let’s make it a complete package.

Strong job market creates opportunities for Kiwis I

t was great to hear the recent news that New Zealand’s unemployment rate had dropped to 4.9 per cent, the lowest since 2008, and that 35,000 more jobs had been created nationally in the last quarter.

Locally we know that the dairy downturn and the downstream effect of that on associated businesses have resulted in some increased unemployment.

There are about 70 more people on jobseeker support in the Ashburton District at the end of September this year (430) than there were last year (357). However, unemployment rates locally remain well below national levels and many businesses still find it

difficult to find suitable applicants for employment vacancies.

With the national economy growing at well over 3 per cent, lower unemployment nationally and more jobs being created we have a great platform to work with employers and other stakeholders to lift employment to levels we haven’t seen before.

The strong and growing New Zealand job market provides great opportunities to get more Kiwis into life-long careers.

The Government has a strong focus on helping young people develop the skills they need to move into work. We’ve just announced a new target – to have 50,000 people training in apprenticeships by 2020, up from the 42,000 in training now.

This signals that we will back employers and industry training organisations as they grow their apprenticeship and trainee numbers.

The increasing demand for apprentices reflects strengthening economic conditions, business

which helps young people facing particular challenges gain the skills they need to find a job and help secure independent futures.

There have been some notable successes, including a 33 per cent increase in students enrolled in IT qualifications between 2008 and 2015, and the Maori and Pasifika Trades Training scheme growing to 2400 places in 2016, up from 1900 in 2015. The annual rate of those not in employment, education or training (NEET) is also at its lowest in eight years.

Train derails in India Fourteen coaches of a passenger train rolled off the track early Sunday, killing at least 45 people and injuring more than 120 in northern India, officials say.

Volunteers and railway police pulled out the bodies from the mangled coaches and were working to rescue passengers who were trapped in other cars that fell on the side, said Daljeet Chaudhary, a director general of police, at the site of the accident.

The derailment occurred around 3am on Sunday near Purwa, a village near the industrial city of Kanpur, when the 14

coaches jumped the track. Some coaches crumpled as they crashed into others, trapping hundreds of people inside.

Medical teams were providing first aid near the site while the more seriously injured have been moved to hospitals in Kanpur, Chaudhary said.

It was not immediately clear was caused the coaches to derail.

The toll was likely to go up as two airconditioned coaches were severely damaged and people were still trapped inside, said Rajesh Modak of the Railway Protection Force.

Kanpur is a major railway junction and hundreds of trains pass through it every day.

Several trains using the line have been diverted to other routes, Anil Saxena, spokesman for Indian Railways, said in New Delhi.

Train accidents are common in India, with most accidents occurring due to human error or aging equipment.

Trains are the popular mode of transport for millions of Indians and around 23 million passengers use India’s vast railway network every day.

Ride stuck at park A popular rollercoaster at Movie World on the Gold Coast has become stuck days after it passed a safety audit.

Footage emerged online yesterday showing a cart of the Green Lantern rollercoaster at a standstill at the top of conveyor belt.

A Movie World spokeswoman said the attraction suffered “a short delay” and all guests were off the ride.

The same ride malfunctioned in March 2015 when a wheel component became loose and stranded 13 people, some for as long as three-and-a-half hours.

Firefighters were called to rescue riders during the March incident but a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the park had not called for their services yesterday.

The incident occurred days after the theme park’s 16 attractions passed a safety audit.

Sentence ends in May

President-elect Donald Trump gives the thumbs-up as Mitt Romney leaves Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey at the weekend.

Schapelle Corby will be free to return to Australia in May next year after serving the last months of her drug trafficking sentence in Bali. News Corp reports that the Parole Board has confirmed Corby’s release date has been set for May 27.

Corby was originally sentenced to 20 years in jail for importing more than 4kg of marijuana into Bali in 2004 but was released from Bali’s Kerobokan Prison on February 10, 2014.

Suspected Trump meets former rival Romney jihadists arrested Spanish police have arrested two Moroccan citizens suspected of being fully integrated into the Islamic State jihadist group and preparing to launch attacks in Spain.

The arrests were made in Madrid and in Roda de Ter, a town near Barcelona, according to the Interior Ministry.

The two suspects allegedly joined the IS voluntarily and obediently followed the instructions issued by the militant group’s command structure.

Both men allegedly used the internet and social media to radicalise and eventually recruit new adherents to the jihadist cause while organised in independent, but coordinated, terrorist cells, the ministry said.

President-elect Donald Trump and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney have set aside their long-simmering rivalry and sat down for talks that could include whether Romney should serve as Trump’s secretary of state.

“Mr President-elect, how are you sir?”

Romney said in greeting Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on his arrival at Trump’s golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey on Saturday.

Romney was the first in a long list of people Trump was meeting on Saturday and Sunday as he seeks to fill out his Cabinet and seek advice ahead of his January 20 move to the White House.

As a leader of the establishment Republican “never Trump” movement, Romney had sought in vain to derail Trump’s march to the Republican presidential nomination.

Back in March, he delivered a biting speech saying Trump would be dangerous as president, with policies that could throw the United States into a recession.

He had also said, “I’m afraid that when it comes to foreign policy he is very, very not smart.”

For his part, Trump had denounced Romney as a “choke artist” for losing the 2012 election to President Barack Obama.

But with Trump now the president-in-waiting, Romney’s appearance at Trump National Bedminster on an unseasonably warm November day was symbolic of hard-won party unity.

Whether it will lead to Romney joining the Trump administration is unclear. Trump has been considering former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a close adviser, for secretary of state, as well as former US ambassador to the United States John Bolton and US Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee.

Trump transition officials said his meeting with Romney was supposed to be a general discussion about the incoming Trump administration.

A Romney confidant said of Romney’s secretary of state prospects: “Could it happen? I suppose. But it’s unlikely.”

Instead, the source said the meeting gives “the good housekeeping seal of approval to Republicans who don’t know if they should help Trump or not.”

Committed to Goop Gwyneth Paltrow said she prefers that people no longer “kiss my ass” and says she’s more focused on her lifestyle website Goop than her acting career. The Oscar-winning star said she had “never felt so professionally fulfilled” working on the weekly publication and it was taking up the vast majority of her work.

■ NAMIBIA

A safari with a conscience C

oiling and curving like swirls of bent iron, hardy welwitschias burst through the rust red basalt landscape.

Living for more than 1000 years, Namibia’s national plant crawls slowly from somewhere deep inside the Earth’s core only to gradually wither away. There is, after all, plenty of time to grow old in the desert.

One of the least densely populated countries in the world, Namibia is vast and frequently empty; the kind of place you could spend all day travelling to get nowhere.

I’m here to explore the northwest region on a very unconventional safari with conservationist Garth Owen-Smith, a man who doesn’t like to do anything by the book.

Crammed into a clattering 4WD with a Jack Russell perched on the dashboard and two over-excited Staffordshire terriers licking my face, we head inland from the mist-shrouded Skeleton Coast with no clear plan in mind.

Fog thins to reveal ochre sand dunes latticed with oryx trails and rows of gnarled, prehistoric welwitschias, and very soon I’ve lost my bearings completely.

Rugged and sun-crisped like the land he inhabits, 72-year-old Garth is a man of the bush.

Although born in South Africa, he’s been living in Namibia since the sixties and his work with local communities has earned him numerous awards – including last year’s prestigious Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa, presented by the charity’s royal patron Prince William.

Owen-Smith was instrumental in getting conservancy legislation written into Namibia’s constitution, making it one of the most environmentally progressive countries in Africa, and in 2010 he set up Conservancy Safaris Namibia with long-term partner, anthropologist Margaret Jacobsohn. The couple acts as trustees for the company, with profits divided between the stakeholders, five Himba communities.

Over time, the landscape changes slowly. Red becomes black as we drive through abandoned mining areas where shiny dolomite columns soar like organ pipes and the presence of petrified tree logs defies explanation. Veiled mountain peaks fade into infinity as pronging, dust-churning springboks are silhouetted against a setting sun.

Our simple camp for the night is in the dry Huab riverbed. A support team erects tents and prepares dinner for a group of five tourists; Owen-Smith only guides small groups and past guests have included members of the wealthy Rothschild and Goldsmith families.

It’s a world away from a sumptuous, five-star safari set-up, but the closest you’ll get to really understanding Africa’s wildlife and people.

Although Owen-Smith aims to educate, his teachings are never didactic. Instead, it’s a slow reveal; a sprinkling of shared insights,

allowing people to draw their own conclusions.

This mostly takes place around the campfire, as the night sky glitters with stars.

Puffing on a pipe, he tells us about his work with communities and the NGO, Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation, which he and Jacobsohn set up in 1983.

Back then Namibia was in the throes of a poaching crisis and people felt disconnected from wildlife. It belonged to the government.

Jacobsohn and Owen-Smith believed the solution lay with communities, the Himba, Herero and Damara tribes. It was vital they regained stewardship of their environment.

“No-one takes responsibility unless you give them responsibility,” says Owen- Smith, with a glinting, intent look in his eyes. “No-one was listening to the communities, and we changed that.”

Their hunch proved right, and within two years rhino poaching stopped in Kunane.

In 2000, 40 per cent of the world’s black rhino population

resided in Namibia and people are able to track them on foot in the arid, rubbly Damaraland region.

We join local guards working with Save the Rhino to monitor and protect the animals.

Sadly, another wave of poaching is passing through Namibia and so far, half the rhino here have been dehorned for their own safety.

Crouching low to the ground, we move between sparsely scattered bushy euphorbias for cover.

A young bull is resting 100 metres ahead of us.

Any charge could prove fatal, but our guide, Alpheus intimately understands the behaviour of these animals.

One of the main reasons for the resurgence of poaching in Namibia is the drought that’s ravaging resources and forcing wildlife and people into closer contact. Desertadapted lions are another species particularly at risk.

Hearing the famous bachelor pride the Five Musketeers is in the area, we set up camp in the Barab.

Boas, a local guide who also leads tours for CSN, tells me about the importance of allowing communities to select their own lion

guardians and develop a sense of responsibility.

At night, I lie awake listening to the low, guttural roar of lions, so close I imagine the wind beating against my tarpaulin is in fact their heavy breath. But, like the breeze, they soon pass by.

The following day, it strikes me there are no firearms in camp and I ask Owen-Smith why we don’t have any protection.

“If we had guns,” he says wisely, “we might be tempted to use them.”

Tyre tracks overlap in the sandy riverbed hugged by rippling mountain folds, and it’s hard to determine exactly where we’re going.

“Garth doesn’t get lost,” reassures Jacobsohn, with a subtle hint of sarcasm. “Getting lost is a state of mind. It’s just that sometimes he’s not sure where he is.”

We settle on a camping spot nestled between powdery white sand dunes and mopane trees, and drive through forest clearings in the hope of finding elephants.

We don’t have to wait long.

Sitting still, we watch a young bull tug at the branches of a winter thorn tree, dexterously rattling free its fruits with his trunk.

Critically, as has been the case throughout our journey, there’s no-one else around.

While on the road, we bump into game warden Tommy Hall, a friend of Owen-Smith’s who’s heavily involved in anti-poaching efforts. Welling up with tears and weighed down by despondency, he’s clearly overwhelmed by the battle ahead.

Owen-Smith refuses to be downbeat. He sees victory in sight and believes the solution lies in harnessing the power of numbers.

“A country never won a war with one person,” he tells me. “The winning army is always the one with most people.”

His words now seem more relevant than ever.

“I just hope people will start listening to me again,” he says with typical modesty.

Young guns fire on court The young guns had the edge at the Mid Canterbury Tennis Gala Cup over the weekend, secondary school students Flynn Ness and Tessa McCann winning the prestigious singles crowns.

Ness, number one seed in a draw of 11, beat Jarrad Hill 6-2 6-2 and Aidan Mitchell 7-6(3) 6-4 on his way to a final against 2014 champion Neil McCann, who he dispatched 6-2 6-2.

McCann had beaten Tyler Leonard 6-2 6-2 and losing semifinalist last year Sam Bubb 6-1 6-1 to progress.

The senior players got revenge in the doubles, McCann teaming up with Peter Kirwan to beat Koji Kawamata and Andre van Rooyen 2-6 6-1 10-6 for the title.

Bowling milestone for Bennett A last wicket partnership helped Coldstream squeak over the line in their senior cricket match against Lauriston on Saturday.

Coldstream won the toss and put hosts Lauriston in to bat, on a low, slow wicket that had seen plenty of rain during the week.

Lauriston was all out for 65, extras the top scorer.

Coldstream’s chief destroyer was Andrew Bennett, who col-

lected six wickets and took him past the 200-wicket milestone for Coldstream.

Coldstream’s chase started and stuttered and at 55 for 9, Lauriston was working hard for the last wicket.

But batsmen Bennett and Matt Hart held on for 10 runs in a match-winning partnership; Bennett fittingly hit the winning runs.

At the Methven Domain, the hosts were beaten by a 10-man Tech side who chased down a target of 110 with five wickets to spare.

Methven won the toss and chose to bat, with young Richard Turpie leading the run tally with 21.

Hunt each picked up two.

Tech’s chase went largely to plan, with everyone chipping in.

Barrett ABs’ talisman

H

ere’s an interesting question. Take Beauden Barrett out of that test match yesterday morning and do the All Blacks still win?

If ever there was a game where Barrett underlined why he was named World Rugby’s Player of the Year in London earlier in the week, it was this encounter in Dublin.

His contribution to a game where the All Blacks barely had the ball was immense.

He set up the first try with that superb cross kick to Malakai Fekitoa, scored the second with a brilliant scything run and handled twice in the match-sealing touchdown including a critical pass to TJ Perenara to set up Fekitoa for his second try.

Even without the ball in his hands, Barrett was dynamic.

By my count, he came up with three match-turning tackles – one on a rampaging Sean O’Brien, another copybook one from behind and a third one when he lowered flanker Josh van der Flier smashed through the middle of our pack during a critical Irish attacking move.

In short, Barrett offered the Xfactor that Ireland didn’t have.

The cool-headed No. 10 wasn’t the sole reason we won, but he had damn big say in the final scoreline.

I think when Ireland regroup and analyse this match, they will have some regrets over their approach at different key times of the match.

I was often confused over what they were trying to achieve.

There were times when they had the All Blacks on the ropes but left points on the field by taking the soft option.

They played very well, no doubt about that.

Their domination of possession and territory, and just about every other stat that wins a game, underlined that.

But they weren’t as smart and savvy as they were in Chicago and it cost them.

I’ve been in All Blacks dressing rooms, particularly earlier in my career, where I’ve sat down after a test and gone: ‘How the hell did we win that?”

I think there would have been a similar feeling among the guys today.

Twenty odd missed tackles is a lot.

ABs take a classic It took incredible skill for an incredibly physical test match to finally crack and then spill the All Blacks’ way, 21-9. The effort they put in was colossal because it needed to be to match Ireland. This was test match football as it’s supposed to be. Breathless, endless, brutal.

The commitment from both teams was total. The All Blacks will feel it was their defensive effort that won the the test, one that a brave Irish side again felt got away.

South Africa led 12-10 at halftime but a mixture of sloppy mistakes and Italian resilience in front of a roused home crowd gave the Azzurri a stunning victory. In the last six weeks, the embattled South Africans have suffered their heaviest home loss at the hands of New Zealand, drawn with the Barbarians, and lost to England last weekend for the first time in 10 years.

PHOTO AP And it was disconcerting to see one Irish prop brush off three would-be All Blacks tacklers and O’Brien do the same.

But when tackles had to be made, they were made. When the scrum had to hold, it did. When the lineout had to be won, it was.

Even though they couldn’t get into the parts of the field they wanted to, the All Blacks won because they played sensible rugby and took their chances – albeit with Barrett the key influence.

Ireland probably had 20 to 25 opportunities to score points in that match and the All Blacks had a mere handful. Yet one side scored three tries and the other none.

Great teams learn how to win even when they’re not having a good day. They still get the job done and that’s exactly what New Zealand did. That must have been demoralising for Ireland.

Look at the way they dominated the opening exchanges of the second half. And then, bang, out of nowhere the All Blacks score.

That would do your head in if you were the opposition.

I know there’s been a bit

of complaining about the All Blacks’ tactics, including their tackling, and also of Jaco Peyper’s refereeing. But I don’t think the Irish were hard done by, or that the South African had a poor game with the whistle.

Yes, there were discipline problems from the All Blacks that do worry me and, yes, the penalty count was very high against New Zealand. That’s perhaps not surprising given the All Blacks were doing the bulk of defending and struggling to get their hands on the ball.

But I felt Peyper did a reasonable job. He and the match officials got the Sam Cane call right in the first half despite the best efforts of the Irish players and crowd to convince the ref there had been foul play.

I also don’t think there is any animosity between the two teams. Far from it.

Both sets of coaches actually went out for a drink together on the Thursday before the test.

That’s the level of respect that exists between the two sides and coaching staffs.

If anything else has come out

of this All Blacks’ northern tour, other than a growing respect for Irish rugby, it’s the realisation for New Zealand rugby fans that it could be an almighty tour by the British and Irish Lions next year.

After what we’ve seen from Ireland in their last three tests against us, plus the rejuvenation of England under Eddie Jones, anybody who thinks next year will be a walk in the park and a 3-0 clean sweep like 2005 is dreaming.

The Lions will have a coach in Warren Gatland who knows the type of rugby that is needed to beat the All Blacks (with a heavy blueprint provided by Ireland and Joe Schmidt) and the players to execute it.

The Lions will also have depth – the one area where every other opposition has consistently struggled against New Zealand.

Unilke 2005, I think the Lions will get their selections and playing style right this time.

If we didn’t already have a healthy regard for next year’s visitors, we do now.

It is shaping as a magnificent tour.

Still hard to catch Shezhardtocatch has limited racing opportunities ahead of her, but she showed at Pukekohe Park that she’s in the right order to take advantage of them.

In foal to Showcasing, she returned from a brief break on Saturday to down a smart field of sprinters in the Listed Haunui Farm Counties Bowl.

“We had a go at the Foxbridge Plate and after she ran sixth we freshened her and got her in foal,” said Allan Peard, who prepares the Elusive City mare with Bruce Wallace at Byerley Park.

Shezhardtocatch came back to finish fourth at Ruakaka in September and a trial outing at Ellerslie topped off her preparation.

“She’s a tough mare and she trialled really well so we were quietly confident that she was going to run well,” Peard said.

Shezhardtocatch settled off the pace before she unwound powerfully in the hands of veteran jockey Grant Cooksley to get in the deciding stride on the post.

“That’s Cookie for you – he never panics,” Peard said.

“She’s certainly up to the best sprinters on her day and she’ll definitely go to the Concorde and maybe the Newmarket before the Railway.”

Shezhardtocatch won the Gr.3 Concorde Handicap as a three-year-old before she also added the Gr.3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes to her record.

Promising mare Snowdrop gave an excellent account of herself in her open class debut to go under by only a short head with a nose back to Perfect Fit, who gave the winner and runner-up five and six kilos respectively.

Wins elude Man U Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho rose from his chair and was about to leave the post-match news conference when he turned to his audience, threw his arms up and said: “Finally, I’ve lost to Arsenal.”

It was a tongue-in-cheek remark from Mourinho but it summed up his feelings perfectly.

United conceded an 89th-minute goal by Olivier Giroud to draw 1-1 with Arsenal in the English Premier League yesterday, leaving Mourinho’s side with an increasingly familiar deflated feeling at Old Trafford this season.

United has dominated its last three home games in the league – against Stoke, Burnley and now Arsenal – and come away with draws from all of them.

“We all know internally,” Mourinho said, “that in this moment we are the unlucky team in the Premier League.”

Giroud’s superb header, from fellow substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s right cross, was Arsenal’s only attempt on target in a match that United controlled at Old Trafford.

United did the same against Burnley last time it played at Old Trafford, having 37 attempts on goal but drawing 0-0.

Mourinho is cutting a frustrated figure at United, which remains a work in progress in his first season in charge.

But he now hasn’t lost in 12 Premier League meetings with Arsenal across two spells with Chelsea and one game with United, and stretched his unbeaten run in competitive meetings with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger – his bitter coaching rival – to 14 matches.

Jose Maurinho claims his team is the unluckiest in the EPL. It was a flat and all-too-familiar performance at Old Trafford by Arsenal, who hasn’t beaten United away in the league since September 2006 and fell behind to Juan Mata’s 68th-minute goal.

The Spain playmaker met a right-wing cut-back by Ander Herrera with a low, first-time shot into the corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Mourinho was heading for his most important victory since arriving at United, only for Alex OxladeChamberlain to sprint past Marcus Rashford, reach the byline and cross for his fellow substitute Giroud to head home at the far post.

“We had not our usual style going forward.

“We were not sharp or fluent enough,” said Wenger, who suggested that Arsenal might have a “mental block” when it plays at Old Trafford.

Giroud is starting to make a serious claim for a starting place now he is fully fit following a delayed start to the season after the

European Championship.

The France striker, who has lost his place to Alexis Sanchez as Arsenal’s lone striker, scored two goals off the bench in the last away game at Sunderland.

“He is a bit frustrated,” Wenger said. “That is normal. He is ready to go again.”

This fixture has provided plenty of drama down the years but there was little to get the crowd excited about here, with the teams’ decision to field two defensive midfielders stifling much of the attacking play.

United had the better of the game, but only created half chances until Mata’s goal.

His future at United looked bleak after Mourinho was hired by United, with the Portuguese coach having sold Mata to United in January 2014 when both were at Chelsea.

But Mata appears to be a central figure in Mourinho’s plans at United, and was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 85th minute.

Former president jailed An Ecuadorean court gave a 10-year jail sentence to former national soccer federation president Luis Chiriboga for corruption this weekend in another case stemming from the scandal at world governing body FIFA. Chiriboga, 70, who ran the soccer federation for 18 years but has been under house arrest since late 2015, was convicted of money-laundering along with two others at the organisation.

He is one of about 40 soccer bosses, mainly Latin Americans, implicated in US-

led investigations that have rocked FIFA. Judge Miriam Escobar said about NZ$6.1 million (NZ$8.7 million) had passed illegally through Ecuador’s soccer federation.

Her court in the capital Quito ordered the three soccer officials to pay back double that and to give up properties.

Lawyers for the men said they would appeal.

Chiriboga, who has denied the charges, would be likely to serve his sentence at home given his advanced age.

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi has compared Alan Milliner’s phantom yellow card at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night to arguably the biggest refereeing blunder of them all – Graham Poll’s infamous meltdown at the 2006 World Cup. Confusion reigned supreme late in the 1-1 draw between the Roar and A-League leaders Sydney FC when it appeared Rhyan Grant was about to be sent off for a second bookable offence for bringing down Jamie Maclaren in the 77th minute.

Sydney coach Graham Arnold had already told substitute Seb Ryall to start get-

ting ready but when Grant remained on the field, the crowd of 17,322 erupted into a fury.

It later emerged referee Milliner didn’t actually show Grant an initial yellow for his sliding challenge on Thomas Broich in the 59th minute – even though he took the card out of his pocket, which officials are only instructed to do if they intend to caution the player.

Aloisi said it brought back instant memories of Poll, who famously showed Croatia’s Josip Simunic three yellow cards in their 2-2 draw against the Socceroos.

Sport Reid sees red Winston Reid returned from injury only to find himself having an early bath after being sent off in West Ham United’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. The West Ham and All Whites skipper was playing in his first game after suffering a minor hamstring injury, but was sent from the field after receiving a second yellow card for elbowing Harry Kane while contesting for the ball. Kane was Tottenham’s saviour, scoring two goals in quick succession to hand Spurs a 3-2 win.

Early season training paid off for members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton swim team over the weekend, with all 21 swimmers recording personal best times at the 2016 Memorial Championships.

Coach Shane Jones said the side won a stack of medals over the individual events and several cups for success in the relay events.

The swim meet was held at

the EA Networks Centre pool Saturday and yesterday, and was the first big swimming event since squads resumed training six weeks ago after a winter break.

Fifteen-year-olds Kelly-Anne Bentley and Leigh Harrison were among the medals for the first time, while Cameron Slee returned to competition swimming in style, knocking big chunks off their previous personal bests.

Swimmers are trying to qual-

ify for Canterbury and South Island events, as well as division two competitions later in the season.

Jones said squad members would swim in two more meets before Christmas, then attend a swim camp in January.

A contingent would attend the South Island long course champions in Invercargill.

He said several swimmers who had been working hard in the background were now finding their hard work was paying

off with medal finishes.

“All the kids swam well this weekend.”

The Memorial Championships are organised by Swimming Canterbury West Coast in memory of swimmers, officials and coaches who have given so much to the sport of swimming in the Canterbury and West Coast regions and have since passed away.

The meet attracted 210 swimmers, aged from nine to 17 years, from around the region.

Hansen bristles at ‘dirty side’ suggestions All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has clashed verbally with an Irish television interviewer after taking offence at her inference New Zealand are a “dirty side”.

Hansen bristled during a sideline interview with Irish television’s Claire McNamara at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium following New Zealand’s 21-9 win.

But McNamara kept coming and Hansen reacted when he was pushed again.

“I’m not sure where you’re going with this, do you want me to tell you we’re a dirty side or something? Is that what you’re saying?”.
