Adele fans angry over no-streaming call British singer Adele has angered fans after her record label confirmed new album 25 would not be available to fans through streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.

The singer is said to have been personally involved in the decision, according to the New York Times. “Seriously Adele, what the hell is your problem?” one fan tweeted. “@Adele, I read you’re (sic) album won’t be available to stream.

As a paying @Spotify customer, that sucks! I pay in my $120 a year. Why punish me?” Timothy Field tweeted. The Hello singer’s no-streaming policy is similar to that of pop star Taylor Swift, who pulled her music from Spotify late in 2014 over royalties disputes.

New tool to ease break-up heartache Facebook is trying to ease the heartache of breaking up. A feature announced yesterday will allow people who have split up with a spouse or partner to turn on an option that spares them the emotional pain of constantly seeing their ex-lover’s posts and pictures in their news feed on the world’s largest social network. Facebook will begin testing the break-up protection on mobile devices in the US before deciding whether to offer it to its 1.5 billion account holders worldwide.

The option is designed for people who don’t want to risk offending a former love by taking the more extreme step of ejecting or blocking them from their Facebook network.

Clever tribute to Jonah A striking tribute to Jonah Lomu on the cover of an Irish newspaper has gone global. The front page of Thursday’s Irish Examiner was all black, with a picture of a silver fern with one leaf falling to the ground. The only words were a simple: “Jonah Lomu 1975-2015.”

The page has been liked and shared thousands of times on social media and the newspaper’s editor Tim Vaughan said that was down to Lomu’s global popularity. “It’s a fantastic image, but I think it’s because of the regard in which Jonah Lomu is held. That’s why it’s getting the reaction it did. He was loved all over the world,” Vaughan told Radio New Zealand yesterday.

“I wanted to mark Jonah Lomu’s tragic passing in a significant way.”

Fleeting, but memorable

Brother-and-sister duo Broods took home four Tuis at this week’s New Zealand Music Awards, one of which was handed to them by the legendary Mick Fleetwood.

Georgia and Caleb Nott beat a well-worn path to the stage, but getting presented with the album of the year gong by the Fleetwood Mac drummer is the one they’ll remember. “He was so lovely.

It was awesome,” Georgia Nott told Newstalk ZB yesterday of meeting Fleetwood, who is on tour in New Zealand. “We got to have a bit of a chat with him afterwards. He was just the nicest guy ever and I was all over the place. I wasn’t really expecting him to be so caring and lovely. He wiped my tears with his hanky on stage. He was just awesome. He’s very tall.”

Georgia Nott revealed she’d ditched her shoes at the awards, because she’d “had enough” of them. She and her brother also collected Tuis for best group, best pop album for Evergreen and the radio airplay record of the year for their single Mother and Father.

Prime Minister John Key was spotted by Australian journalists this week wandering across the lobby of his luxury Peninsula Hotel in Manila wearing only his dressing gown. Well almost only. Apparently he had his togs on underneath his robe. While still in his dressing gown, he stopped and talked politics to the astonished journalists and described Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as “a bolter” who would be in power for 10 years – some have written about the unusual encounter on Wednesday evening about 6pm. Mr Key told New Zealand journalists yesterday morning he was on his way back from the hotel pool.

When asked what sort of world leader would do that, he joked it wouldn’t be a world leader but “a junior world leader”.

Possibly it was Mr Turnbull who thought journalists would be working, not drinking.

He also said there was no short-cut to the pool.

Eager students shown the Ashburton intermediate ropes

Ashburton Intermediate School was full of nearly 200 eager Year 6 students yesterday, who are due to start next year.

Students from schools including Allenton, Hampstead, Netherby and Chertsey, visited in blocks to see where they would be educated next year.

Acting principal Judy Jemmett said the students were shown around the school and were given an opportunity to ask any questions they had.

Allenton School Year 5-6 teacher Amanda Graham said one of her students, Nikita Turner, 11, may have a more difficult time learning her way around the school because she is blind, but that has not put her off.

Nikita had been visiting the school once a week to learn her way around, so when she started she would already be well-prepared, probably more so than the other students, Mrs Graham said.

She would also have a great teacher aide.

Mrs Graham, who has been Nikita’s teacher for the past two years, said she is a very independent, outgoing and bubbly girl.

“We don’t really see her as having a disability.”

Allenton School sent about 50 students to the open day who were all buzzing about their move when they came back to class, she said.

Ashburton may lose courses – union

The Ashburton community could lose some courses during a merger between Aoraki Polytechnic and Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Tertiary Education Union national president Sandra Grey says.

Tertiary Education minister Steven Joyce announced earlier this month that Aoraki Polytechnic will merge with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology to create a new institution

next year. On Thursday, a Tertiary Education Union campaign was launched with a rally in Timaru to protect education services in South Canterbury.

Dr Grey said they would also be consulting with people in Ashburton about the merger and the possible impacts.

“We’re certainly going to be doing the same sort of campaigning in Ashburton.

“I know we’ve made individual contact with local bodies to see where everybody sits.”

dent to staff ratio. For smaller rural communities, like Ashburton, it could mean that some classes might not be able to continue because of low enrolment numbers, Dr Grey said.

However, Mr Joyce said courses would continue to be available next year subject, as they always were, to enrolment demand. “[Dr] Grey is being once again relentlessly negative on any change in the tertiary sector.

CPIT chairwoman Jenn Bestwick said they were not looking to discontinue courses in Ashburton, but some could change.

“We’re looking at how to provide things in more flexible ways.”

They will be looking at how to provide programmes in ways that would meet students and employers’ needs, including face-to-face and online.

Mandatory doggy doo bags on agenda

The Ashburton District Council is considering making it mandatory for dog walkers to carry bags with them at all times.

This follows on from the Christchurch City Council wanting to make it mandatory to carry a plastic bag while walking a dog in public.

In statement released earlier this week, a councillor said nobody liked “stepping in dog poo so this requirement will hopefully reduce the chances of that happen-

ing”. The proposal also makes it clear that dog walkers need to carry a leash in public places, which is a nationwide requirement.

ADC environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said the dog control bylaw is coming up for review shortly and the council would be looking at this as part of the review.

A bylaw is a set of rules or regulations made by the council and non-compliance can result in fines, seizure of property or remedial action. The bylaw requires dog owners to clean up after their

dogs, however, it is not mandatory to carry a bag.

Mr Catchpowle said the council has installed dispensers of waste bags at the dog park and rolls of plastic bags are also sold at the council reception.

Mr Catchpowle said there is also a Dog Control Act (1996) which addresses other issues including dog registration, dangerous dogs and dogs attacking people.

Summer school heats up Methven Summer School enrolments are coming in thick and fast, but some courses are proving more popular than others.

Organising committee chairperson Judith Sommerville said while some courses had sold out, some courses had no entries at all.

went to work, he always dressed for the job. He was a man who was always smartly turned out, even when he was digging in the garden.

As a third generation clothing retailer, it would have been easy for Cip to sit back and simply grow the family business. But he was a man who liked a challenge and in 1979 with son Euan decided to enter the manufacturing world, buying local company Phaup’s Hosiery.

He took his manufacturing gamble one step further buying the knitting machines that were part of the Mosgiel Knitwear business that had gone into receivership.

They had no experience in hosiery, no idea how to work their newly-acquired machinery, but with typical hard work and endurance, they set up a fledgling sock manufacturing business that laid the foundation for today’s highly successful, international trader, the New Zealand Sock Company.

Cip may have handed over the running of the family’s businesses to Euan in 1984, but he remained an integral part of the Sparrow brand.

While his business and his family were at the centre of his life, Cip also found time to become involved in a wide range of community groups and organisations.

He was a member of the MSA orchestra, a member of the Ashburton Lions Club for 34 years, and Savage Club, a life member of the Ashburton RSA, Allenton Rugby Club, Ashburton MSA, Automobile Association, Ashburton Road Safety Committee and St John.

He was on the board of Trustbank and received an Ashburton District Council civic honours award in 1997. He was also a past president of the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union and played in the rep team in 1953.

Cip may have been the quintessential businessman and a man with his community in his heart, but above everything else in his life, his family was number one, his children and his grandchildren his pride and joy.

hen Cip Sparrow died on November 10, he left behind a business legacy that was born in 1887 and is still going strong today.

Cip was the 10th child in a family of 13 and was always destined to follow his father and grandfather into the Sparrow family’s clothing business.

He, along with three of his brothers, became clothing retailers, and while the others eventually left, Cip stayed the distance.

He cut his teeth in the business delivering accounts and parcels by bicycle before officially starting work in 1938 as a 16 year old. Until not long before his death, Cip was still working in an off-shoot of that business, the New Zealand Sock Company. At the age of 90 he would turn up to work every day to do whatever was needed although he had officially retired in 1984.

He received his education at Allenton School and later at Ashburton Technical College. The large Sparrow family lived on five acres on Allens Road in a large house with seven bedrooms.

Like many young men of his era, Cip’s career was interrupted by service in World War Two. He was a member of the 7th and 2nd Canterbury regiments and then transferred to the RNZAF. He served overseas in 1944 and 1945 as a wireless operator.

With the war behind him, Cip returned to Ashburton and the family business. That was the signal for his father William John to retire and hand the business over to the next generation.

When he came back from overseas, Cip married Marie and the couple had five children – Margaret Ann who died at three days, Euan, Lyn who died at 14 months, Lois, and Tony, who died in January.

Cip’s time at Sparrows was during the era of ties, suits and hats, when men went to work dressed formally.

It was a work habit Cip never abandoned.

Scott Watson and the media As a fresh cub reporter, Nadine Porter ended up working in the Marlborough Express newsroom at the same time as the murder investigation that gripped a nation was taking place and found herself in the middle of a bitter battlefield where journalism took a back seat to rivalries.

I

arrived in Blenheim in October 1998 as a fresh young rural journalist not long out of trainers – excited to be in my first proper newsroom.

Marlborough was a world away from Invercargill but I, like everyone else in New Zealand, knew about the mysterious unsolved disappearance of Olivia Hope and her friend Ben Smart from Furneaux Lodge in the Sounds on New Year’s Eve the previous year.

By the time I arrived on the scene, Scott Watson had been arrested, although the police investigation was ongoing and the police reporter was dealing with tidbits on a daily basis.

It was clear from day one that this newsroom was dysfunctional.

By their very nature provincial newsrooms are a hotbed of competition, rivalries and ambitious egos and people desperate to claw over each other to get to the top.

Being a rural reporter circumnavigated that posturing and I was for the most part left to my own devices, happy enough to be out in the Wither Hills meeting the people on the land.

But the tension could not be escaped in an open room where bitterness and petty fighting over who should be covering the Scott Watson case could not be ignored.

And Mike White, the now-famous author of that interview with Scott Watson, was very much a part of that situation. A prodigy of the then editor Brendon Burns, he was opportunistic, ambitious and a deputy chief reporter at a young age.

That’s not to discount White. He remains a savvy journalist of immense talent, but it’s fair to say the bickering in the newsroom and the ongoing scraps around who should

be reporting on Watson, worked very much in his favour.

The background to the turmoil that saturated the newsroom stemmed from two matriarchs who wanted to cover the story of their lives. The police reporter was a very well-connected woman in the community and would naturally be expected to cover any developments.

But this wasn’t a normal newsroom and the chief reporter verbalised concerns that the police reporter was too close to the investigation.

I can’t comment on that, but I can say in all my years of journalism I have never encountered a situation where the detective inspector would walk into the

seen that boat, but as a newspaper we never seemed to keep pushing further on that line. Sure, we would report facts as they came in, but then those stories would vanish.

Pope appeared to have a close friendship with our police reporter and anything he fed the reporter was acted on and this I remember, was the stem of many bitter arguments with the chief reporter who at times felt we were not properly following the story and were being biased in our coverage.

It seemed Pope would say jump, and our police reporter would say “how high?”.

I recall an incident where Pope “tipped” the reporter off to a location where he believed they had found something. It had come after

Mike White, who got on well with the police reporter, was rewarded for his ambition when Brendon Burns deposed our chief and promoted him.

Eventually I left the Express unimpressed and weary with our coverage of the investigation and trial.

Never did I feel that the Express was unbiased, nor did I think they were considering anything else other than of Watson as a killer.

Not enough thorough investigative reporting was done and subsequently Scott Watson was tarred by media who, in my summation, were under the police’s thumb.

In hindsight I don’t think we acted as good as we could have as a whole and I’m part of that and I take my part of that responsibility.

Rob Pope had a big personality and was, as I recall, an intimidating presence. He was not the type of guy you argued with and could be a little frightening in his demeanour.

From two weeks in he decided Scott Watson was his man and religiously stuck to that line despite many many people contacting the Express to say they sighted a two masted ketch. I remember even up to a year later we were still taking calls from people saying they had

months of so-called “tip-offs” that turned up nothing and all were further designed to implicate Watson in some form or another. This particular time the chief reporter put her foot down and refused to go along with Pope and the police reporter.

That was the catalyst to her demise.

From there it became a daily battle often filled with the police reporter stomping off to the general manager who owned the Express and threatening to quit if something didn’t change.

and well remembers the septic newsroom at that time.

“I don’t know if time will tell whether the paper did a balanced job of it or not – or how right/ wrong the cops were, but boy, there was some fighting over the scraps in the newsroom, wasn’t there?

“I’m afraid things got a little bit over-excited – provincial newsroom and major national story and all that.”

In a recent interview, Paul Henry put it to Mike White that Scott Watson blames the media for not asking enough questions because

“he feels they were manipulated by the police. Henry went on to add that as White was working at the Marlborough Express at the time, did Watson hold him slightly responsible?”

To which White admitted the newsroom he eventually helmed didn’t do its job properly.

“It was only three minutes into the seven hours of interviews that we had before he (Watson) challenged me and said, “you were part of the lynch mob. You were one of the ones holding the torches. How do you feel about that?”… and look – it’s something that I take on board. We were acting in good faith at the time.”

On being pressed further by Paul Henry on how he felt about Watson’s interpretation he said: “I do feel I was manipulated to an extent. I don’t think the media asked enough questions. Partly we were thinking that we had to support the police and we were doing the right thing by doing that. In hindsight I don’t think we acted as good as we could of as a whole and I’m a part of that and I take my part of that responsibility.”

While I applaud White for his honesty, unfortunately it’s all a little too late.

Journalism is a serious job. It creates perceptions. In this case the squabbles and infighting and rivalry may have overtaken a man’s right to be heard and to be understood.

And that leaves us with the overriding question – did Scott Watson kill Olivia and Ben? Honestly? I don’t know the answer to that question – but I do know the newspaper I worked for did little to nothing about exploring other possibilities when they were presented, and let personal relationships get in the way of the

job and White was very much a part of that.

At the end of the day the 17page interview White wrote for North and South may have been best done back in that newsroom in 1998 when journalists should have been asking the same questions.

I just hope Watson isn’t paying the price for that 18 years later.

Former editor admits grounds for disquiet W

hen the disappearance of Olivia Hope and Ben Smart first happened Brendon Burns called his newsroom together to discuss just how they were going to cover the story.

He had just three principles he wanted his reporters to adhere too.

The first was to take into account the sensitivities of the two highprofile families involved, bearing in mind the newspaper served a small tight-knit community.

Secondly, he wanted the journalists to do all they could to assist the police in their investigations – which was particularly pertinent in the early days when there was still a possibility of finding the pair alive.

Finally he told his team that although he wanted to assist the police he would also reserve the right to comment if they found anything untoward in the investigation.

But somewhere along the way a disconnect happened between editor and his team.

Burns was unaware of the degree of hostility in the newsroom believing it to be a case of “strong personalities”.

Marlborough Express editor at the time of Olivia and Ben’s disappearance, Brendon Burns, held a strong view that police had got it right when they arrested Scott Watson, but now he reveals to one of his former reporters his disquiet and unease since reading Watson’s interview with prodigy Mike White.

“If those were issues pertinent to the coverage of the case then surely they would have been presented to me?”

However, he does agree that the Marlborough Express relationship with Detective Inspector Rob Pope was “closer than it should have been”.

“In hindsight maybe we should have heard bells ringing, but there wasn’t much of his (Watson’s) side of the story coming through. As Scott identifies in his interview, his lawyers were telling him not to speak.”

He spoke of a lead reporter on the case, along with the reporter’s partner, taking Pope out on their yacht “to give him a break from it all” and admitted, had he known beforehand, he would have told

the reporter that was inappropriate.

“We were getting a good line of stories coming from those police sources and nobody was standing up to give another point of view.

“Sure we do play our part and we do make mistakes and we can be steered on issues.

That’s part of the process of being a journalist and you need to keep your eye open for being sold a line.”

Mike White’s interview of Watson has now caused him to reflect on the case and what transpired all those years ago.

“I guess the thing that stuck with me all those years ago was the oddity presented to us.

“Scott Watson was on the turps all night long, getting up early and

sailing out and then spending the day painting the boat … and then cleaning the boat and sailing the Tory channel…”

And Burns didn’t have the budget to spend on journalists disappearing for days investigating alternative theories had any come up.

“We were a very small newsroom and this stretched our resources enormously.

“In hindsight, perhaps we didn’t do everything that we might have done and maybe we should have been more critical of the police, but certainly there were things we didn’t do that other media did that were totally inappropriate – like the identity parade the television did where they lined up potential suspects and tried to get people to

identify them.”

The media was not the judge and jury, he said.

“And if Scott Watson is an innocent man and we didn’t stand up to express some views then we played our part in an injustice – but we are not the people who sit for weeks on end deciding.”

The media also have a part to play after the fact and that was what Mike White was doing now, he said.

“And I applaud that … I have the highest respect for Mike White. I hired him because I could see the talent that was there and he’s more than measured up as New Zealand’s great investigative journalist and if he has found cause for disquiet then it gives us reasons to rethink this.”

Bras for breast cancer survivors

For women who have battled breast cancer and opted not to have a breast reconstruction, prosthetic breasts are often a crucial part of life.

Earlier this week, Dee Kemp Towns came to Ashburton to help fit women for prosthetic breasts and tailored prosthesis bras.

Inundated with clients from all over Mid Canterbury during her two-day stint, Ms Kemp Towns was booked to capacity.

Working for Medivex, a consumer healthcare distributor, Ms Kemp Towns helps women all over the country better understand what options are out there following their battle with breast cancer.

Prosthetic breasts can be made to fit anyone, from women who have had a lumpectomy to partial and double mastectomies, she said.

Ms Kemp Towns works with prosthesis that are manufactured in Europe. Delicately handmade, they take a day to make and come in many different forms.

Partial, hollow and full prosthesis are available made from various types of silicon.

The modern alternatives are a far cry from the prosthetic

breasts of old, which were often fashioned out of socks or casings of beads.

The specially-designed bras are also much more modern – women can buy anything from a sports bra to swimwear, to active-wear with a bra attached to feminine lacy lingerie, Ms Kemp Towns said.

Most prosthetic breasts do not fit inside a standard bra, she said, as natural breasts can move and mould. To combat this women can buy bras with pockets sewn in, or alternatively have pockets sewn into their existing bras.

While she admits the tailored bras and prosthesis can be expensive, this can be aided by subsidies from the Ministry of Health.

Every woman who has had breast cancer is entitled to a subsidy which can vary from up to $613.33 for a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy $1226.66 for a double mastectomy, she said.

Xmas market returns A one-stop shop for all of your Christmas shopping needs can be found at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre tomorrow.

The Merry Little Christmas Market will see more than 60 stalls set up shop offering something that all of the family would like to find wrapped up under the tree on Christmas morning.

There will be jewellery, handbags, clothing, camping equipment and toys, and plenty of food to keep everyone happy.

Ashburton Trust Event Centre bar and catering manager Casey Rose said the event – which was in its second year – had doubled the number of stallholders.

She’s not sure exactly how many people came through the doors last year, but the day was massive.

The market day will run from 11am until 4pm and it won’t matter what the weather’s doing, because it’s all indoors, with the whole event centre being utilised.

Entry will be via a gold coin donation which will give people either a glass of bubbles or juice to enjoy while they browse the extensive array of goods on offer.

IHC assn celebrates half century A

mong those attending IHC Ashburton 50th anniversary celebrations this weekend will be service users William Glassey, Graham Hughes and David Parkin.

Mr Hughes, 74, and Mr Parkin, 63, remember back to the association’s earliest days and Mr Parkin was among the first to attend its facilities.

He recalled when one of the early committee members approached his parents to see if their son would like to come along to the new soon-to-beopened Tinwald training centre.

He had attended school in Ashburton, but left after intermediate.

“I said ‘what do you think, mum?’ She said ‘I think it would give you something to do’, and I said ‘Yes, I think that would be good’,” Mr Parkin said.

His days at the centre preceded a productive working life. His father was a shearer and timber mill worker and he would often help him, travelling to farms and forestry areas. He spent 21 years at Hallidays, undertaking duties such as tidying the site and stacking timber, until having to leave in recent years due to failing eyesight.

Mr Parkin enjoyed travelling and had been to Disneyland on a cruise and regularly went to see his sister and nieces in Australia.

He is looking forward to catching up with friends from many years

“Well I have been there right from the start, so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Mr Parkin is one of three

residents in the new Rands Flats at the Tinwald site. He joins Mr Glassey, 43, in one of the twobedroom flats in a supported living situation.

Mr Glassey attended Hampstead School, as well as a special school in Timaru. He worked at the former IHC Pole Garden and former IHC wood workshop, as

well as for an autodismantlers in the town. He collected model cars and liked listening to music and watching DVDs. Mr Hughes is a resident at the four-bedroom Wilkin Street, where he and fellow resident Raymond Wright reminisce about the old days.

They both went to the Templeton special school and residential facility together as children, in the days when those with intellectual disabilities were placed in state care.

State care meant certain rules had to be followed, such as his parents having to apply to be able to take him home to Ashburton on holidays.

Mr Hughes had only good memories from Templeton, however, and said he enjoyed “everything”, from making lots of friends and going on excursions, among his favourites being to the speedway.

His adult life had been just as rewarding, he played indoor bowls in the special Olympics in Christchurch, worked in the laundry of a town woollen mill for five years and at Pole Garden.

He was looking forward to last night’s dance and today’s open day. “I really am,” he said with a big smile.

Motivated parents and how it all came about

A

group of parents, who had sons and daughters with an intellectual disability, established IHC Ashburton Association in 1965.

After much fundraising and applying for grants, a two-acre section was purchased on State Highway 1 at Tinwald, which continues to provide for the association today.

In 1967 the branch had $4000, and five years later it opened its first building on the site, the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society training centre, built at a cost of about $60,000.

The new centre was “an exercise in people working together to help those less fortunate than themselves”, an article heralding its opening in the Ashburton Guardian reported in 1972. It provided a workshop, daycare and education services for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

“Service clubs, groups and individuals have worked together to make this centre a reality,” foundation president H. G. Douglas said in the article.

Field officer of the time, Joy Nicholls, wrote about establishing a working group of trainees ready to move into the new centre. An old cottage on Alford Forest Road became the temporary base.

In notes held by the association today, Mrs Nicholls told of teaching three young men aged between 16 and 20, who were very much in need of “occupational relief from the boredom

“The lads were a delight to see as they painted the walls and themselves,” Mrs Nicholls said.

Further trainees were taken into the group until it reached a capacity of 12, which saw the cottage “bursting at the seams”.

Her notes describe the year of being based at the cottage, a year which marked a transition from families in the town having to cope on their own to being able to share both the burden and the joy of caring for those with intellectual disabilities: “Basketmaking was attempted, not very successfully at first, and various little contacts were obtained from business firms. The post office kept us supplied with a

contract for the tying of labels and so on. Many other little handcrafts were attempted and soon we had our first sale of work which brought in $87. We had several such sales that year.

Many visitors came to the cottage in those early days. These included social workers from Templeton and Sunnyside, where some local IHC people were being educated and cared for, psychologists from the Department of Education and many others.

All were every enthusiastic about the lovely atmosphere amongst the trainees in the workshop and the advancement being made manually and socially.

The first picnic was held at Mr J Bebbington’s farm at Lauriston.

The trainees were wildly happy that day.

Meantime, plans were well ahead and the new workshop building was being erected at Tinwald.

With the completion of the centre a very good working group of trainees who were all welladjusted were ready to begin their training there, although there was quite a little sentimental sadness at leaving the cottage.

The year of the cottage centre was of very real value and rich in experience for all concerned.

To myself as supervisor the experience was gratifying indeed and left no doubt in my mind that intellectually handicapped folk were suitable for training and able to acquire some skills to enrich their lives.”

The association’s 50 years in

Ashburton includes the operation of Pole Garden at the Tinwald site, growing produce and providing work for service users until its closure in 1996. An IHC workshop also provided employment, and was established at the Tinwald site before moving to Alford Forest Road before its closure.

Celebrations this weekend were to kick off last night with a social function and end-of-year dance at the Ashburton Club and MSA. Today an open day is to be held at the Tinwald complex, where Rands Flats are to be officially opened at 11am.

Rands Flats, named after late longtime service user Lorraine Rands, were recently constructed and house two clients in supported living and one high-needs service user.

The flats join long-established accommodation already at the site – Grove House with five bedrooms, Douglas Flat with two bedrooms and Dolan House with three bedrooms, all for highneeds users.

The former training centre is today the IHC Ashburton headquarters, comprising offices and a drop-in centre.

Other locally-owned facilities off-site include Wakanui with five bedrooms, Wilkin Street with four bedrooms and Miller with five bedrooms.

About 25 service users are accommodated in the locallyowned facilities, and altogether there are about 46 IHC service users in Ashburton, and 62 staff.

As well as this, students advocated for self-issuing book systems, designated reading and study areas, large television screens to advertise new books and show education programming.

A technological upgrade was also popular, which included being able to sign up to the library online, an extension of E-Book and iPad tutorial sessions and scanning a library card to enter certain areas of the library.

An outdoor area was also on their agenda, as well as the implementation of a children’s book club.

AshburtonYouth Council

T

he youth council presented its submission in the form of a video, filmed in the Ashburton Public Library.

It floated the ideas of large windows and decorated floors and walls to modernise the space as well as designated study areas and meeting rooms as well as “no tech” zones. Having books assorted by genre and ensuring book series were complete would also be beneficial, as would better signage for the comic book session, the group said.

A laptop zone could be inviting and using other libraries around the country for reference could help make this easier to implement.

While the council was not set on a location it thought it could be located within central Ashburton.

To help entice families into town, the students came up with the idea of building the library on to the EA Networks Centre.

With swimming, stadium and gym facilities, as well as parking and a café, it made sense, they said.

The group added technology would need to be upgraded and the Ashburton Public Library could model itself after the Christchurch City Library which uses self-check outs which freed up the staff to interact with patrons.

Hinds School

o improve the library, Hinds School students Eva Kelly and Sabrina Irvine suggested implementing a variety of new things – including interactive activities such as ICT web, quests and scavenger hunts, a puppet theatre and visits from authors.

A survey of Hinds School found that 73 children used the library while 58 did not, but with an upgrade this could change.

Hinds pupils also thought the library website could be further developed and house a blog, discussion areas and a question and answer section.

he library should be situated in the old museum and art gallery building, said Harrison McMillan and Shania Harrison-Lee. Being accessible in the middle of town was a great idea and Baring Square East could be used as an outdoor area to read books and relax, they said.

In terms of layout, the upstairs could be used to store books and also hold technology and quiet rooms.

Downstairs would be split into three age-group lounging rooms, one for kids aged 0-5, another for 6-11 and a third for 12-16-year-olds.

The idea of including a 3D printing room was also mooted.

In terms of security, the children advocated for a card-access option, fencing and childproof gates.

The pair found the idea of separate teenage and children areas was popular and said the idea was “well overdue”.

A redesign every five to 10 years was also floated, beginning with an overhaul of the paintwork and current, dated, furniture.

The implementation of modern technology was also popular, with Ashburton Intermediate advocating for iPads to be used for self-issuing and renewal purposes.

inwald School leaders Madison Trusler-Clark and Jack Brown brought to the table three main issues – connectivity, environment and the inclusion of child creativity.

With fibre optic high-speed internet available at Tinwald School they said up to 250 children were able to access online material, an idea that could be adopted by the library.

“A new library should merge digital and print media seamlessly,” the pair declared.

To modernise the library, new, bright and versatile seating and shelving could be used and a designated area specifically for children could also be added, they said.

eorgia Blundell, Harriet Simpson and Emma Begg thought keeping the library where it is was the way to go.

Peaceful technology and reading rooms could be added and bright murals would liven the place up, they said.

More computers and a self-checkout area could also be added to make it more technology friendly.

The idea of a sticker system which identified how long a book could be on loan for was also floated – for example a smaller book might have an orange sticker which meant it was on loan for one week where as a larger book, such as Harry Potter, might have a blue sticker which meant it could be taken out for four weeks.

uestionnaires sent out to the Year 9 and 10 students at Ashburton College by students Sarah Rawlings, Kate McIlroy and Jemma Donnelly got a mixed response.

Some students wanted the library to stay put, while others thought it should be moved to the old art gallery building.

However, all students agreed it needed better wifi access, downloadable E-books and extended opening hours.

A young persons’ and children’s area was also popular as was the addition of an outdoor area.

To be environmentally conscious, the students suggested solar panels and eco-bulbs be used.

Netherby School

world room was at the top of Netherby School’s priority list when it came to the library.

Matthew Ashdowne and Anna Gray said after surveying students it was clear a room that encompassed books from a variety of cultures was popular. As there are people of many different nationalities it would make sense to have a room dedicated to culture and a world map where people could pinpoint where they come from from could be used, they said.

The idea garnered positive feedback from the councillors. “That makes so much sense and as far as I am concerned it is definitely up for discussion,” councilor Rod Beaven said.

Another important point was the extension of opening hours, . The hours should be altered so people can visit before and after school and work, as well as on the weekends, the students said.

Methven Primary School

ethven Primary School took on a different issue at this year’s Young Persons’ Forum and one that was especially close to home.

Ella McSweeney and Sophie Fulton called the issue “car chaos” and touched on the fact there was still no resolution with the school’s high traffic area and congestion issues on McDonald Street.

The school’s Lyndhurst class completed an “inquiry” into how this issue could be solved and came up with a variety of solutions including reducing the speed limit, implementing a drop-off zone, making the area a clearway at all times and adding a speed bump or island to the crosshatched area on the street.

Time to stop those who poop and walk away Sue Newman

A

shburton is a district of dog lovers.

We have more than 7000 dogs around the district and from a population of around 33,000, that’s a pretty high dogto-human ratio.

Most of those dogs are loved, well cared for and exercised regularly, and most dog owners are pretty responsible when it comes to ensuring their dogs do not become public nuisance number one.

And there are plenty of rules and regulations around to ensure dogs and their owners are good citizens.

But there’s one thing that even the best of dogs can’t control, even the best of dog owners sometimes ignore, and that’s when and where their pooch leaves his calling card.

The good owners walking their dogs in public places are meticulous about cleaning up the mess if Roger or Rosie poops in public.

The good owners head out for a walk with a plastic bag handy for any mid-trip mishaps.

Stepping on a dog turd is one of life’s unpleasant experiences and even though the Ashburton District Council has rules around cleaning up after dogs, there’s still plenty of smelly evidence that says many don’t.

The Christchurch City Council is taking an ultra tough line on dog owners in an effort to clean up the city’s streets. Not only will owners be expected to clean up their dog’s poo, they’ll be fined if they head out for a walk without a plastic bag in hand. They’re talking $300, enough to hurt.

Owning a dog is not a right, it is a privilege, one that comes with a raft of obligations.

The Ashburton District Council is currently revising and rewriting its policies and bylaws and dog control will have its time under the spotlight. This will create an opportunity for Ashburton to follow the lead of its big sister by putting in place tougher rules around cleaning up dog poop.

If any dog owner can be asked to produce a clean-up bag on demand or if it’s needed, then it will go a long way towards making the sneaky dog owners and sneaky dog poopers think twice about dumping and walking away.

YOUR VIEW Garden party The Altrusa Club of Ashburton recently held a Spring Garden Party to assist with the purchase of a new pony for Riding for the Disabled.

Despite the weather being far from spring-like, which in turn affected attendance, the day was successful with people enjoying the stalls, the displays of art and sculpture and the musicians, in the beautiful setting of Carol and Garry Haskett’s Racecourse Road garden.

Thank you to all those people who contributed in so many ways, including the Riding for the Disabled members who provided the ponies and the manpower for the pony rides, the stallholders, the Altrusa members for their hard work and generosity, Lushingtons, EA Networks and Video Ezy for vouchers for competition prizes, Liam Scott and the Piano Man for providing the music, Jenny Thompson and her group and Brent Holley for the art and sculpture and, most of all, Carol and Garry for making us so welcome in their lovely garden.

I

t was meant to be date night with the Farmer.

This was not a night of romance as such, but a night where we sit down, watch a movie and chew the fat – or at least that was what I had planned.

It’s fair to say that farmers have a more streamlined idea of what romance entails than their female counterparts. That may be in part due to their experiences of breeding with livestock where the introductions are few, the courtship a sniff, and commitment means sticking around for all of five minutes.

And so it was that the Farmer was warned to be in on time, and preferably showered. He should, I told him, treat every date night as a real date – ie, as if he was beginning our relationship.

His grin warned me that he might not be taking my advice as seriously as I hoped. However, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and made sure I had a stock of his favourite lollies and chips in.

After feeding children, bathing children, bathing dogs, mediating scraps and cleaning up, I was very weary and wondering where the heck the Farmer had got too.

So I waited, watched some television as the clock ticked on and tried to keep my eyes open.

Eventually he wandered in, smeared in the remnants of crutching sheep, big smile lighting his face, but frowned when he saw my dishevelled and exhausted state.

“You not making an effort love?”

To which I clenched my fists and replied back pleasantly: “It’s been a little busy here, getting the kids into bed early so we could spend some time together.”

“Yeah, about that …” His eyes looked guilty. “Ummm … I have to shift an irrigator … but it won’t take long. I’ll just eat my tea first.”

I rolled my eyes, letting him know I wasn’t impressed.

“But I’ve got a movie out?”

“That’s alright love,” he winked.

“You get started on it.

“I’ll only fall asleep if it’s one of those chick flicks anyway, so by

Parisians raise defiant glass In France, a glass of wine is many things: one of life’s small pleasures, a civilised complement to food, a source of national pride.

Now, it’s also a symbol of defiance.

As vintners release this year’s batch of Beaujolais Nouveau in the shadow of last week’s Paris attacks, “To the bistro!” has replaced “To the barricades!” as France’s rallying cry.

“What would our country be without its cafes?” asked President Francois Hollande, telling his compatriots that life must be “resumed in full” after the November 13 gun and bomb rampage by jihadi militants.

The attacks, which killed 129 people and injured more than 350, have left France in shock.

They overshadowed Thursday’s Beaujolais Nouveau Day, when winemakers uncork their latest batch of the fruity young wine, and bars and restaurants hold special tasting sessions.

Jean Bourjade of the wine producers’ body Inter Beaujolais said the group considered scrapping some of the promotional events after the attacks. But it was decided that the wine should flow, because “it is the French culture, it is the French way of life, which has been put in jeopardy.”

Many Parisians are determined to raise a glass — even those who consider Beaujolais Nouveau’s popularity a product of savvy marketing rather than quality.

“The Beaujolais isn’t good wine. But everyone will go out on purpose,” said 63-year-old Lucienne Tavera, sitting with two friends on a cafe terrace near the Bataclan concert hall, where the deadliest of the attacks unfolded.

“We won’t care how it tastes.”

Her resolve is echoed across the patch of eastern Paris where the attacks took place — the 11th arrondissement and the neighboring Canal Saint-Martin area in the 10th.

After 8pm, about 100 young people were out in the rain at the Place de la Republique, a central square in one of the neighborhoods and a home to several candlelit memorials to the victims.

Cafés and restaurants in the area were about half full.

Multilingual healing Stroke patients are more likely to regain their cognitive functions if they speak more than one language, Indian research suggests. A study of more than 600 stroke victims found 40.5 per cent of those who are multilingual had normal mental functions afterwards, compared with 19.6 per cent of patients who only speak one language. The study was carried out by a team from the University of Edinburgh together with the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences in the Indian city of Hyderabad.

Worker scalped An Irish backpacker who had her scalp ripped off in a horrific farming accident is recovering in a Melbourne hospital. Annmarie Dunne, from Tipperary in Ireland, was working on a farm in Shepparton East to gain a second year on her working holiday visa.

Her hair became caught in a conveyor belt on November 9 and her scalp was pulled off. She was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital with major head injuries and a hospital spokesman said she remains in a stable condition. A crowdfunding campaign for Ms Dunne has so far raised more than $28,000 so her family can be in Australia while she recovers. A WorkSafe investigation into the accident is ongoing. - AAP

Ex-Subway frontman Fogle jailed for 15 years Jared Fogle emerged from obscurity to become the unlikely face of one of the nation’s biggest restaurant chains, earning a small fortune by touting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle that included Subway sandwiches.

But his wholesome public image was only that, and yesterday he was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for trading in child pornography and having sex with underage prostitutes.

telling the court in a tearful statement that he was raised with good values by a good family, but succumbed to self-centered “deception and lies.” He said he wished he had realised long ago that he had a problem.

“I had become dependent on alcohol, pornography and prostitutes,” he told the judge. “... I want to redeem my life. I want to become a good, decent person. I want to rebuild my life.”

Judge Tanya Walton Pratt wasn’t swayed, though, and gave

him a harsher sentence than the 12½ years that prosecutors had sought. She also ordered him to submit to a lifetime of postprison supervision and fined him $175,000.

“What a gift, to have such a professional windfall fall in your lap,” Pratt said, referring to the lucrative deal Subway gave Fogle after he lost more than 200 pounds in college, partly by eating its sandwiches. But she said Fogle blew the chance he’d been given by living a double life and

pointed out that the crimes he committed weren’t victimless.

Fogle pleaded guilty to one count each of travelling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and distribution and receipt of child pornography, per a deal he struck with prosecutors in August, a month after authorities raided his suburban Indianapolis home.

Fogle agreed to pay a total of $1.4 million to his 14 victims, with each getting $100,000.

The risk of a terrorist attack is the main security fear at the Rio Olympics, a top official says.

“Terrorism is the number one worry,” Jose Mariano Beltrame, the security chief for the state of Rio de Janeiro, said. “Brazil does not have a history of terrorism, but always works with this priority.”

With a low profile in international conflicts and no connection to US and European entanglements in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, Brazil has never been targeted

by Islamist groups. However, the simple fact of world leaders being present at the Rio Olympics next August, coupled with the massive media coverage, risks pulling Brazil into the crosshairs.

DIY surgery An Adelaide man who operated on his dog with a kitchen knife will spend one month in prison. The 45-year-old from West Hindmarsh was convicted of cutting out a large cancer from his 18-year-old cattle dog’s shoulder in June last year, the RSPCA says. The dog was left with an open wound, and later rescued and euthanised. The man pleaded guilty to the ill treatment of an animal causing death. - AAP

he view of up-and-coming leaders of the primary sector is that New Zealand can and should be achieving more with the talent, knowledge, natural resources and market reputation the generations before them have built.

These are the main themes of the latest KPMG Agribusiness report which, as normal, gathered the views of current leaders, but also surveyed a number of emerging industry leaders from across the country.

As expected, both groups ranked maintaining a worldclass biosecurity system as the number one priority for the New Zealand primary sector.

They also agreed on the importance of securing high quality trade agreements and delivering clear market signals throughout the supply chain.

There were, however, some significant differences between the groups.

Overall, the emerging leaders focused more on being customer-centric. Their second highest priority was the need to innovate in order to provide products that are more tailored to the needs of the consumer.

During the workshops with emerging leaders, they made it clear that they want to see far greater collaboration between all participants in the supply chain to ensure they produce

the products their consumers will pay the most for.

Emerging leaders also feel more strongly about creating strong provenance stories for New Zealand products, so products can be sold at a premium.

The low-priority rankings of each group were also interesting. Existing leaders place less emphasis on engaging in community projects to support beneficial and social outcomes while emerging leaders had a stronger focus on people and communities.

The group painted a picture of what the primary industry needs to look like in 2035 with trust and collaboration being strong themes that emerged from emerging leaders.

They believe that existing leaders, particularly those in like industries, need to shut the door on the past and place more trust in each other.

They see advantages in working together to gain market advantage against New Zealand’s international competitors as opposed to competing against

each other to pointlessly drive prices down.

The group was unanimous that the success of New Zealand’s future food products lies in a single clear and cohesive primary sector brand, supported by the New Zealand story that is wider than meat and dairy.

There was also a strong call for New Zealand, and the primary sector in particular, to urgently engage in transparent and meaningful debate on the use of genetic modification.

They talked about a 2035, where New Zealand will produce what the customer needs, how they need it, when they need it. The vision is to grow more, waste less, ensure greater sustainability and integrate commercial benefit with social gain and environmental excellence will be business as usual, because it’s the right thing to do, not because it is a legal requirement.

The group provided an interesting perspective and one certainty - the future must be about doing things differently. Those that prefer the tried and true will ultimately become irrelevant and flounder. Those that are willing to try something new will learn faster and flourish.

The Lodge’s new managers Paul O’Connell and Pip Dixon are ready to put their part-time experience in hospitality to good use.

The couple have been busy since arriving from Christchurch to take up residence at the Methven accommodation premises earlier this month.

They have been painting the interior, installing new furniture, erecting new signs and coming up with a new menu in the attached restaurant and bar.

Formerly housing The Dubliner, the licensed premises is now Crossroads in the Square. It was to open last night with bar meals, preceding the full family-orientated restaurant opening next week.

Mr O’Connell, 36, and Miss Dixon, 28, have been employed

by The Lodge’s new owners, Miss Dixon’s mother and stepfather Donelle Dixon and Phil Cattermole, who are operating in partnership with Jill and Graham Houston of Methven.

Mr O’Connell was a builder in Christchurch and has had some

experience working in bars and restaurants. Miss Dixon was working in administration in Christchurch and over the years has also worked in bars and restaurants to help fund her love of travel. She has been to the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Australia.

They are both looking forward to making hospitality their fulltime career and have so far enjoyed meeting the many guests who have come to stay at the The Lodge.

“We like the idea of running a small business in a small town. It’s obviously a lot different to working in a city, it’s more personal, we are looking forward to meeting people,” Miss Dixon said.

“You can socialise and it doesn’t cost you money and you don’t have a headache in the morning,” Mr O’Connell said of bar work generally.

The pair have not missed the big city to date, and have brought three pets with them to keep them company. They are Tammy the one-eyed cat, Sneaky the overweight rabbit and Kermit the bright green frog.

500g Tegel Lean & Line Skinless Breast Fillets 1 leek, washed and trimmed 3-4 rashers Tegel Chicken Bacon, diced 420g can condensed creamy pumpkin soup 1/2 C sour cream 1/2 C chicken stock or water 1T chopped parsley 1 bag Watties Potato Pom Poms ■ Cut Tegel chicken into 3-4cm pieces. Heat a dash of oil in a heavy-based frying pan and brown chicken pieces evenly.

Place in a baking dish.

■ Cut leek into 1cm slices and pan fry in the remaining oil with the bacon, until fragrant. Remove from the heat and stir in the pumpkin soup, sour cream, chicken stock or water and parsley.

Matt Winter will be looking to get his eye in during Tech’s clash against Coldstream today ahead of Mid Canterbury’s opening Hawke Cup encounter against South Canterbury in Timaru next Saturday.

The 24-year-old wicket-keeper batsman is entering his sixth season with Mid Canterbury and captained the team over the past two seasons, but chose to concentrate on his individual role this year with Bevan Ravenscroft now at the helm.

“It’s more of a step back, wicket-keeping and captaincy don’t really go that well together – it was too much to worry about,” he said.

Mid Canterbury’s first and only Hawke Cup triumph came back in 2004, but Winter believes the class of 2015/16 is capable of ending more than a decade of disappointment, provided their best eleven can be fielded throughout the Hawke Cup campaign.

“There’s always been a lot of talent around in Mid Canterbury cricket, it’s just about getting eve-

ryone on the park at the same time,” he said.

“It’s a matter of availability, but if we can get the same eleven out and get a bit of consistency and momentum then we could.”

Mid Canterbury’s pre-season preparations have been far from ideal.

Following a four-wicket loss to last season’s Zone Four winners, North Otago, in Oamaru a fortnight ago, a fixture with Marlborough in Cheviot, scheduled for last Saturday, fell through due to “miscommunication”.

Despite the lack of pre-season

hit-outs, the Tech player is confident that there is enough experience within the squad to begin the season positively at Aorangi Oval in a week’s time.

“There’s definitely five or six blokes that have played a lot of Hawke Cup cricket.

“It’s one of those things that you can have as many warmup games as you want, but you have to perform on the day,” he said.

“We’ve all been playing cricket long enough to know what we have to do, now it’s a matter of going out and doing it.”

Hadlee calls for legalising ball tampering Sir Richard Hadlee has renewed his call to legalise ball tampering as the world’s best batsmen keep plundering runs against battered bowlers.

Australian writers believe that flat test pitches hastened fast bowler Mitchell Johnson’s decision to retire and are suggesting quick bowling might be in its death throes because so many factors are against it.

Veteran Daily Telegraph cricket correspondent Robert Craddock writes that in his upcoming television interview with Hadlee, the great Kiwi bowler says “he could see no problem with bowlers being able to use natural forces such as their fingernails to work on the ball.”

Craddock said Hadlee still wanted items such as bottle-tops banned as tampering aids.

Craddock believes allowing ball tampering would be a justified response to batsmen gaining an advantage through the use of much bigger bats.

The balls were hardly sacred objects anyway, with at least 11 being replaced when Australia and New Zealand drew the test in Perth.

There were mammoth individual and team scores in that just completed test, along with regular totals in the 400s and 500s in Australia during the past year.

Johnson ‘affected’ Retired fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has admitted the death of batsman Phillip Hughes led him to question his aggressive approach to the game. Johnson terrorised English batsmen in the 201314 season with a barrage of short-pitched bowling, however the sport itself was rattled after Hughes was fatally struck on the head by a bouncer a season later. “It still hurts to this day,” Johnson said of his team-mate’s death.

The showgrounds will host the Mainland Coachwork Ashburton Dressage Summer Championship today and tomorrow with 100 entrants expected to compete, including 20 local riders.

The championships will offer a

fine prelude to the FEI World Dressage Challenge on Tuesday and the Canterbury Dressage Championships in Christchurch next weekend.

Southland’s Helen Boyd has retured to the event after a 15-year absence and was pleased it has been extended to two days.

“About 15 years ago was the last time I competed here.

“I stopped coming because they stopped having it on the oval and I found the warm-up areas too hard,” she said.

“It’s super that it’s now a twoday event.

“It makes it all worthwhile and

it’s a good run-in for the upcoming Canterbury championships.”

Other than the extended duration of the championships, the music freestyle has also been reprised.

The action will begin at the showgrounds at 9am.

Jones new England coach?

Australian Eddie Jones is set to become England’s new rugby coach, with Jake White the latest highprofile candidate to rule himself out of the job.

The 55-year-old will be in place when England kick off their Six Nations campaign next February after the Rugby Football Union (RFU) agreed to a STG100,000 ($NZ214,700) compensation payout with his current team, the Stormers in South Africa, according to the Daily Express and Daily Telegraph.

Stuart Lancaster left the post last week following England’s disastrous World Cup campaign on home soil.

Jones, who would become England’s first overseas coach, said this week whoever succeeds Lancaster must have greater control over the country’s test players.

“How can you manage your players when they are controlled by other organisations?” Jones said in an interview with the website ESPN Scrum.

“That is the single greatest task ahead of whoever is going to be appointed as the next England coach.”

Jones was Australia’s coach when they lost the 2003 World Cup final to England and four years later was a member of South Africa’s back-room staff when they became world champions.

Montpellier’s South African coach White ruled himself out of the running for the England job.

“I have a contract with Montpellier. I’m not going to change, I’m staying here,” said White in a press conference ahead of their

European Challenge Cup clash with Italians Calvisano.

“It’s important for the club, for the players and for the atmosphere to remove the doubt,” added White, whose contract at the Top 14 outfit runs until June 2017.

White, 52, who guided his homeland to World Cup glory in 2007, had previously spoken of his interest in the England job but started to distance himself last week.

“Everyone in world rugby knows this is one of the prime jobs, in fact even in world sports,” he had said, while insisting he had not met with any English Rugby Union (RFU) representatives.

White had sparked rumours about his future last week when he stayed behind in England after his team’s Challenge Cup defeat at Harlequins.

But he explained that he hadn’t done so to speak to the RFU but rather to “meet certain players’ agents and representatives from Adidas”.

White had twice before been snubbed at the final hurdle by the RFU, when Martin Johnson took control in 2008 and when Lancaster was handed the reins in 2012.

And he said last week he wasn’t prepared to be pipped at the post again.

“If the RFU thinks I am the man for the job and there wasn’t going to be any rigmarole of going through the whole process which I have before then I would be a contender,” he said.

Djokovic sets up Nadal clash

Novak Djokovic set up an ATP Tour Finals showdown against Rafael Nadal as the defending champion booked his semi-final berth with a 6-3 7-5 victory over Tomas Berdych, while Roger Federer defeated Kei Nishikori to eliminate the Japanese star yesterday.

After Federer’s 7-5 4-6 6-4 win earlier in the day, world No.1 Djokovic knew he would advance to the last four if he could secure one set against Berdych in his concluding group match at London’s O2 Arena.

The Serb, a winner of three Grand Slam titles this year, wasted little time achieving that goal as he took the first set to ensure he would finish second in the group behind Federer and eventually eased to victory in 89 minutes.

Djokovic’s bid to win the Tour Finals for a record fourth successive year is likely to face a sterner test from his old rival Nadal, who looked in fine form while romping to victories over Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray.

“We have played so many times and even a couple of times on this very court,” said Djokovic.

“He has played great in his first couple of matches and hopefully I

will be able to play my best.

“That is what is needed to beat him.”

Federer, who has won the Tour Finals a record six times, will face either Murray or Wawrinka, who clash in the semi-finals.

Losing to Federer in straight sets would never be an easy result to stomach for the ultra-competitive Serb, but it was especially painful since it ruined his three remarkable winning streaks.

Not only did the loss end his 23-match winning run dating back to August, it also brought to an end his 38 consecutive indoor victories and his 15 successive Tour Finals wins.

But Djokovic could take comfort from winning 20 of his previous 22 meetings with Berdych, including their last seven matches.

Federer had already clinched a record 13th Tour Finals semi-final place after ending Djokovic’s three-month unbeaten run, but the 34-year-old still needed to beat Nishikori to be certain of advancing.

“It was a really important one for me, to move on (to the semi-finals) with a good feeling,” Federer said.

Hannah ready to bowl rivals Paul Mirabelli looks back with a sense of both pride and regret on Hannah Mary’s courageous fourth placing in last year’s Listed Counties Bowl at Avondale.

The Cambridge trainer pitted his Dubawi mare in stakes company for the first time, Hannah Mary having won her previous start at Ellerslie in Rating 75 grade to earn herself a run in the sprint feature.

Punters didn’t share Mirabelli’s faith in the mare and sent her out a $48 outsider, though she nearly caused a major upset.

Denied clear running inside runner-up Ruud Awakening, rider Sam Collett had to ease Hannah Mary off the favourite’s heels before making her run on the outside, eventually going down less than a length to subsequent Gr.1 Railway Stakes winner In Style.

“That was her first start in a black-type race and she was unlucky too.

“She got held up when she really needed to get going so to run fourth was a fantastic effort,” Mirabelli said.

“She was the rank outsider of the field that day, but she’s gone on to run really well in the Newmarket Handicap, really well in the Lightning Stakes and really, really well in the Darley Plate since.

“She’s hasn’t got a great winning strike rate but she always gives her best.”

Hannah Mary has won just three of her 32 starts, but was Group Three-placed in the Darley Plate behind Durham Town and Shelford as well as running fifth in the Listed Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie and seventh in the Listed Lightning Handicap at Trentham.

Riding for NZ Successful female jockey Danielle Johnson has been called up for international duty. The 24-year-old will join Opie Bosson and Damian Browne to represent New Zealand in the State of Origin series in Queensland next month. It will be held over four meetings on consecutive Saturdays from December 5, with the first three fixtures at Doomben and the last at the Gold Coast. “Danielle will ride on the 5th, Damian Browne on the 12th, Opie on the 19th and Damian again on the 26th,” Johnson’s manager Kevin Booth said.

Rugby’s and New Zealand’s loss

wo icons of rugby left us this week, in vastly differing circumstances.

Richie McCaw pulled the plug on his stellar career with due pomp and ceremony, but the occasion was completely overclouded by the untimely death of Jonah Lomu.

Both personifications of the game and yet it’s comparing apples and oranges.

While Richie remains lauded by many as the best player of all time, Jonah was an entirely different kettle of fish.

A runaway locomotive, the ultimate unstoppable force, Jonah was rugby’s shooting star, a brilliant flaring supernova to Richie’s inexorable presence on the field, at the very top level, for so long.

Jonah was the first, and still probably only, rugby player to transcend the game and be known world-wide as an ambassador of the game, as well as an astronomical success on the field.

Learn a new language

Exercising your brain by learning a new language will keep your mental facilities sharp and clear. Try a computer based language program like Rosetta Stone or Duolingo.

There are also over 48 languages, from Spanish to French to Chinese, that you can learn online for free through courses you can download and complete at your own pace.

If you are looking for a reason to get out of the house, sign up for a language class where you do activities and practise sessions to improve your conversation skills.

Do a weekly physical activity

Staying active is another important way to stay busy during retirement. A physical activity like tennis, golfing, swimming, biking or jogging, done once a week, can keep you healthy and grounded. If you’re looking to meet other people or socialise, go for team activities or sports.

• Look for master classes set up for older or senior participants. Sign up for a senior specific class to allow you to meet other people and socialise.

• You can also sign up for lessons or classes to improve your serve or your breaststroke. These classes will also help you meet other people who may be interested in the same hobbies or activities as you.

Before, we had to refer people elsewhere for assistive products but now we have many of the most popular items ourselves in our shop.

We’ve now had a year since the introduction of the Total Mobility Taxi card in place of the old paper voucher system. Despite some early communication problems it’s been a successful change and users will be thankful they no longer need to post back old voucher butts for new books.

Lochlea Lodge, which was especially designed for the use of residents has proved to be very popular with many happy hours enjoyed by residents attending functions and using the amenities and activities provided at the Lodge.
