Counselling service future threatened

The Mid Canterbury community could be seriously impacted if professional counselling service Relationships Aotearoa closes its doors.

Relationships Aotearoa is a nongovernment organisation that provides counselling and relationship education services throughout New Zealand, which includes support for cases of domestic and family violence.

It will be forced to close down unless it can get more Government funding.

Relationships Aotearoa’s capabilities advisor Sonny Thomas said if the service was to be disestablished in Ashburton it would have a significant impact.

“From Ashburton and Timaru south there are no other providers of victim and perpetrator courses, safety programmes and domestic violence related programmes for men and women,” he said.

There are also no other parenting through separation providers in Ashburton, and Relationships Aotearoa provide the only probation related services in Ashburton and Timaru.

Ashburton’s Restorative Justice co-ordinator Toni Sowman said she would be “really disappointed” to see the service go.

“I will be gutted if they go because they are the only providers of anger management counselling that I am aware of that I utilise here in Ashburton,” she said.

“Our offenders would have to go out

of town for counselling ... and that is a huge hurdle.”

In terms of the numbers of people that use the service, within the Ashburton and Timaru areas there are currently 121 service files open with Relationships Aotearoa, which correlates to 192 individual files.

The organisation is also working with seven complex families, 24 complex couples and 12 complex individuals.

The term complex refers to the fact that the involved party may have long term or historical trauma related issues and interacts with Relationships Aotearoa frequently.

Website an inspiration for women Rotorua pop star Lizzie Marvelly hopes her new project will empower and inspire young women to great things. The 25-year-old launched her new website Villainesse.com yesterday. “I was sick of reading headlines along the lines of ‘How to win him in a text’ and ‘Celebrities doing things’ so I went looking for a site where women were empowered to be smart and opinionated; where thinking and questioning were celebrated. “I couldn’t find that site, so I decided to create it myself.”

Marvelly, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology, said the feedback to date about the concept had been encouraging. “I hope Villainesse will empower, encourage and inspire the women who write for and read it. As a young woman, I don’t want to be preached to, patronised or misled. I feel like we’re in the middle of a wave of modern ‘girl-power’ and I very much hope Villainesse will play a part in that.”

Murray the icing on Letterman’s show Bill Murray has gone from Ghostbuster to cake buster after jumping out of a giant cake to bade farewell to veteran TV host David Letterman. Murray, who was the first-ever guest on Letterman’s Late Night show on NBC in 1982, smashed his way out of the cake emblazoned with the words “Goodbye Dave”.

The Ghostbuster’s star was covered in cream as he embraced Letterman, rubbing the hosts’s suit and thinning hair with cream. Letterman ends his 33-year talk show run today in the US and during his final week on air he has had some of the biggest names in the music and acting industry come on his show to say goodbye.

Morrison, Darby filming Film stars Temuera Morrison and Rhys Darby are working on a new locally made animated TV show. Kiwi animation company Mukpuddy is producing The Barefoot Bandits, a colourful family adventure series that follows the exploits of Kiwi kids on a small island. Morrison will play the father of one of the boys and Darby a “deluded” mayor of a small island off the New Zealand coast. Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones actor John Rhys-Davies will make a cameo appearance in the 10-episode series. Mukpuddy co-founder and co-director Ryan Cooper said he was happy The Barefoot Bandits was a totally homegrown production.

“We managed to keep all the animators and storyboarders in New Zealand, which is nice,” Cooper said. With Mukpuddy cofounders Tim Evans and Alex Leighton, Cooper previously made a one-off animated Christmas special, Missing Christmas. Cooper said the trio wanted to develop the adventures of the characters from that special. He said The Barefoot Bandits would have “real adventure” with danger and mystery, elements he said were often missing in other contemporary cartoons.

‘Do as I say, not as I do’ Former Guns N’ Roses bass player Duff McKagan hopes his teenage daughters do as he says, and not as he does, and stay away from drugs. The rocker has opened up about his heavy drinking and drug abuse past, which led to acute alcoholinduced pancreatitis in the mid 1990s, to his daughters Grace, 17, and Mae, 14. But he finds it hard to tell them to “just say no” to drugs. “Just me saying, ‘Just say no’, that’s not gonna happen; that’s like unicorns with horns,” he told Fox. “So, I mean, I’m honest: ‘You might try some drugs. Phelps diddled out of super Veteran Aussie actor Peter Phelps says his kid’s future and the farm are “gone” after being allegedly ripped off by a financial adviser. Phelps is believed to have lost more than $400,000 after falling victim to disgraced Queensland investment adviser Brad Sherwin. According to Fairfax newspapers, more than 300 self-funded retirees lost up to $27 million after investing with Sherwin’s company Wickham Securities - a mortgage finance lender providing funds for borrowers buying or refinancing commercial property.

“Superannuation stolen by bankrupt ‘financial adviser’ Brad Sherwin,” Phelps wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. “Was property investing super ... [and] he frauds us. “Kids future. Farm. Gone.”

Wickham collapsed in December 2012, owing millions to investors and a month later related entities went under, owing another $30 million.

Call for Government to invest

When it comes to wish lists from today’s budget, Grow Mid Canterbury’s Rob Brawley says he has just one – clear rules and a simple business environment.

“If we know the rules and the rules are clear then we know what we’re working with,” the chief executive said.

Government budgets had become a pretty open book affair in recent years where spending or cuts were signalled well in advance and there were few surprises on the day, Mr Brawley said.

For any business less change was better than more change but ensuring those rules were clear, simple and easily understood was important, he said.

He’s not anticipating anything of sig-

nificance for the business sector today.

“Anything of any significance has been signalled well in advance and it’s very clear if we spend more money in one area it will have to be taken from somewhere else or from more tax.”

In terms of taxation, Mr Brawley said one of the best gifts business and individuals could be given from any budget was a signal that tax cuts would continue.

“Everyone benefits and they provide real incentives for people to work more, earn more and be more productive.”

He’s backing a call by Federated Farmers for increased funding for water storage projects and said an investment in this quarter would benefit not only the district but also New Zealand.

“We need investment in these projects as well as investment in protecting the

environment. Everyone benefits. It’s not asking Government to spend anything, it’s asking them to invest, invest.

If you invest you’ll get a return on your investment.”

The trend to no-surprises budgets made it easier for people to understand what was being spent, where and why, he said.

“I applaud the way the last couple of governments have done this and it makes it easier to understand that anything we wish for will mean money has to come from somewhere else.”

While pre-budget releases indicate big cash injections into education which ultimately will flow through to boost the business section, the main investment in business will come through a promised $80 million boost to private sector research and development.

Wish list includes free health checks Ashburton’s Grey Power organisation, however, does have a wish list including two free health checks per year for people aged 65 and over.

The organisation also backs a national call for health funding for the elderly to be ring fenced, for improved access to elective surgery for the elderly and for tax relief on private health insurance premiums.

Grey Power also wants to work with other agencies for the provision of incentives to make healthy life choices among the elderly to reduce future demand on health services.

Toddler hit in school carpark

Set to dance the night away

A 14-month-old has died after being hit by a car in a Whangarei school carpark yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Dan Cleaver said the accident occurred at 4pm at a carpark on the periphery of Kamo Intermediate School.

“There has been a crash involving a toddler and unfortunately they are now deceased,” Mr Cleaver said.

The toddler’s mother was present at the time, he said. The carpark is off Lincoln Place, away from the school’s main entrance, and is used by the public after hours, as well as staff.

Police were still investigating the circumstances around the crash but described it as “low-speed”.

A handful of witnesses were still being interviewed, Mr Cleaver said.

The serious crash unit was at the school.

Mount Hutt College students are gearing up for a night of glitz and glamour as the final details fall into place for tonight’s school ball.

Preparations for the ball have hit full swing, with students practising their fancy footwork ahead of the big night at a ballroom dancing lesson yesterday.

The theme for this year’s ball is Bright Lights, Big City, which will see the Methven Resort transformed for one glittering and glamorous evening.

While the students will be looking

forward to donning their evening wear and dancing the night away, they are also taking time out to remember those less fortunate.

The ball will also serve as a fundraiser for the Nepal earthquake relief effort, with public viewing of the ballgoers from 8pm to 8.45pm available for a donation.

All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

While the ball is the main highlight of the evening, many attendees will also be looking forward to the after-ball party.

The event has been organised to be as safe as possible, with passes required to

gain entry and a glass ban in force.

Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drugs Service manager Chris Clark said behaviour at past after-ball parties had been good, and this year’s event was set to run just as smoothly.

“There is a lot of bottled water and lots of food, and a big contingent of parents are going to be there as well as our team,” she said.

“The young people on the committee have worked really hard.”

She advised parents to make sure they talked to their children about drinking and to make sure they did not supply them with too much alcohol.

■ MILLING WHEAT CONTRACT

Arable farmers take a hit

The first milling wheat contract of the 2016 season will significantly decrease arable incomes in Mid Canterbury and has been labelled ‘disappointing’.

Champion Flour Mills released a contract yesterday offering just $410/tonne for milling grade wheat, a 10 per cent reduction on the $455/ tonne offered last season. This means most arable farmers will take a cut of around $500 per hectare – a substantial drop for those growing a large amount of milling wheat.

Coming on the back of a $25/ tonne drop in feed wheat contracts prices, the latest offer has left arable farming leaders with a sour taste in their mouths.

Mid Canterbury grain and seed industry chairperson Joanne Burke was disappointed

but philosophical about wheat prospects, saying farmers would need to look at their options carefully.

“It would be nice to have a contract price that reflects our quality.”

Further south where farmers have fewer options should they decide not to sign the contract, the decrease has been accepted as inevitable.

South Canterbury grain and seed industry chairperson Michael Porter, who farms a dryland arable farm 20km south of Timaru at St Andrews, said it was “to be expected”.

“I don’t think there would be any farmers who would be surprised by seeing a lower price in the contract.”

Farmers had learnt to accept and to tolerate the price fluctuations of a commodity market, he said.

While New Zealand mills

have actively said their intention was to take as much grain domestically as they can, Mr Porter said there was always a “benchmark in the background” of import parity and supply versus demand.

However, the mills continue to import large amounts of grain from overseas, leaving farmers with little in the way of bargaining power.

Mr Porter said farmers do have other options in South Canterbury including growing for the Farmers Mill, although it was not yet requiring large tonnages.

Feed grain was another option for farmers, he said.

Milling wheat was not an option due to the “tyranny of distance” that meant all grain was contracted to be delivered to Christchurch – an expensive transport cost.

“When you are this far south

of the Rangitata it’s pretty hard to make it stack up.”

Instead Mr Porter has contracted around a third of his total feed wheat signed to Mainland Poultry in Waikouaiti and has taken a risk in leaving two thirds uncontracted.

Normally his “free” wheat would be sold to dairy farmers to feed to their cows but a depressed milk price was impacting on the market. He was “more than a little bit worried” about the deflated dairy market coming into this season.

“There’s two things to be concerned about and one is price and the other is demand.

You can only wonder what the demand will be.”

Generally dairy farmers take around 20 per cent of the New Zealand feed wheat and barley produced but Mr Porter was concerned that could take a hit this year.

Victim named Police have named the man who died after a shooting in Palmerston North on Tuesday night. He is Tyrone Rawiri Gideon, 21, of Palmerston North. Another 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, police said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the investigation into the incident was continuing. Police were called to a home on Bradford Place in Awapuni after Mr Gideon was shot around 7pm on Tuesady night. Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident at this stage, he said.

Witness a no-show A possible witness to the desecration of dozens of children’s graves at a South Auckland cemetery has failed to come forward, despite footage of the person walking near the crime scene being released by police.

Police on Tuesday released CCTV footage of the destruction of dozens of graves at Papakura Cemetery on Saturday night.

The grainy footage showed the alleged offender and a possible witness. A police spokeswoman yesterday said police had spoken with a couple of other potential witnesses, but not the person in the video footage. The offender still had not been identified, she said.

Tickets wiped Almost 2000 speeding tickets handed out to Wellington drivers have been cancelled after a glitch with the camera, police say. Police announced the decision yesterday, after it came to light that 1778 tickets had been affected by the malfunction on the Ngauranga Gorge speed camera. The glitch was caused by Daylight Saving, police said. All the infringement notices affected by the glitch have been voided, and anyone who has already paid the fine will be refunded. Road policing head Assistant Commissioner Dave Cliff said all 1778 people had been contacted by police as soon as the error was brought to police attention early this month. - NZME

It will be a ribbon-cutting with a difference at the Ashburton Art Gallery official opening on Saturday.

There will be five people with one pair of scissors each, having to synchronise their snipping in order to make sure they all cut the ribbon at the same time.

“We might have to give them a bit of practice,” said the gallery’s communications officer Nicole Bourke.

The ribbon is coloured aqua blue, in keeping with the gallery’s new branding.

The gallery will open to the

public at 1pm, with its exhibitions by Philip Trusttum, Tara Douglas and David Elliot on display. Additionally, New Zealand tape artists Struan Ashby and Erica Duthie will be creating a live exhibition.

Formalities will begin in the gallery’s upstairs foyer and connecting learning room at 1.30pm.

The MC will be Kevin Soster, while speeches will be made

by Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew, gallery committee president Bernie Davidson and curator Shirin Khosraviani.

Those cutting the ribbon will be patron Richard Conway, the committee’s longest standing member Joan Wilkinson,

Jub Jub Club members Maggie Moore, 8, and Luke Rhodes, 7, as well as former Jub Jub member and gallery volunteer Diana Barbu, 14.

“We are honouring the beginnings of the gallery in Baring Square East, and the future,” Ms Bourke said on the choice of ribbon cutters.

There had been 240 people respond to invitations, and many more members of the public were expected to attend the “family-friendly” opening.

As well as the exhibitions and formalities, there would be a special reading by illustrator David Elliot at 3pm, and there will be an evolving wall display formed from cards signed by

visitors. From Sunday the gallery will operate according to its opening hours of 10am to 4pm seven days per week.

“We can breathe a sigh of relief and know we are opening our doors, which is fantastic, not only for us but for the community as well,” Ms Bourke said.

Ashburton has been without a public art gallery since the facility closed at its Baring Square East site on May 2 last year.

It was expected to be three months before it opened in the new Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre building, however the project was beset by delays.

A Northland man who murdered the mother of his two children by drowning her in a stream will spend at least 15 years in jail. Jimmy Peter Akuhata, 32, previously pleaded guilty to murdering 21-year-old Ashlee Louise Anne Edwards, on July 27, 2012, and appeared for sentencing in the High Court at Whangarei yesterday. Justice Rebecca Ellis sentenced Akuhata to a term of life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 15 years. Karen Edwards, Ashlee’s mother, was relieved with the sentence and said they could now rebuild their shattered lives.

She urged people to learn about domestic violence and get help for those who needed it. “I can’t stress enough the damage that domestic violence causes with the insidious cycles of harmful destruction.

Make a stand. Don’t tolerate abuse, bullying or violence,” she said. It was revealed in court Akuhata had four previous convictions for male assaults female.

$10,195 given to Winz victims More than $10,000 has been raised and distributed to the victims of Ashburton’s Work and Income New Zealand shootings.

Leigh Cleveland and Peggy Noble were killed when a gunman entered and fired shots in their workplace, and a third woman, Lindy Curtis, was injured.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, an Ashburton’s Victims’ Fund was established by the mayor’s office in response to a community outpouring of support for the victims and their families.

Many wanted to help but were unsure what to give and how.

A charitable fund was set up

under the umbrella of the Ashburton Benevolent Trust, that already had registered charity status.

Money came from within the district, but it also came from around New Zealand and in the months since the September tragedy, it has continued to come, Ashburton Mayor Angus

McKay said. Since the appeal closed in March, he has met with the Benevolent Trust’s trustees to determine how best to allocate money to the families involved.

The $10,195 raised has now been distributed.

After a manhunt that spanned several hours Russell John Tul-

ly, 48, was arrested and on September 23 was formally charged with fatally shooting the two women and with wounding a third.

Since then he has made several brief court appearances, but a date has yet to be confirmed for his trial.

Search and rescue finds ‘lost’ group

A party of eight from a reclusive religious community became lost in the Mid Canterbury high country at the weekend, and required rescuing.

That was according to the training scenario put forward

by Methven Search and Rescue, when members conducted their annual exercise, at Wakare Station behind Mayfield.

Member Lew Shaw was among those who were acting as

the lost party members, and he had gone “missing” with fellow member Richard Smedley.

The pair were not located by their search and rescue colleagues until Sunday morning.

The lost group’s remaining members were located on the Saturday.

Mr Shaw said he had not minded spending a night out waiting to be found, and it had given him an opportunity to try out his waterproof sleeping bag in the heavy dew.

The exercise had served its purpose of keeping the about 25 search and rescue members who attended up to date with their training.

He said the group was going strong with plenty of young energy. Generally about eight joined each year, with about two-thirds staying on.

“There’s nothing worse than everyone ageing together and before you know it we are all turning up with a walking stick,” Mr Shaw said.

Rejuvenating the Labour Party in the Rangitata electorate will be a major focus at this weekend’s regional conference in Ashburton. The conference will see a host of Labour heavyweights converge on the town for two days of party discussions with local delegates.

Among those attending are

party leader Andrew Little, finance spokesperson Grant Robertson, environment spokesperson Megan Woods, Primary Industries spokesperson Damien O’Connor, and Conservation spokesperson Ruth Dyson.

Rangitata Labour Electorate Committee chairperson Glen Cameron said the conference, which is closed to the public, will feature discussions about

policy and the party’s review following the 2014 election.

“We’ll discuss the outcomes of the review so far, it’ll be our first get together as a region since the election,” he said. “So we’ll discuss where we went wrong, where we need to improve, and what we need to do.”

The conference will be attended by delegates from Timaru to the top of the South Island.

Relationships Aotearoa provides many services in communities across New Zealand, including Mid Canterbury.

It offers victim and perpetrator courses, safety and domestic violence programmes, parenting through separation programmes and programmes for children who witness violence.

Nationally, the non-governmental organisation provided over 50 per cent of domestic violence related services, and close to 50 per cent of parenting through separation services.

Relationships Aotearoa’s capabilities advisor Sonny Thomas said the organisation

is more efficient and effective that Child Youth and Families social workers.

“Child Youth and Family have already come out and said that less than 8 per cent of their time is spent face-to-face with children, and they are a child centered service, and that 30 per cent of their social workers’ time is spent face-toface with clients,” he said yesterday.

Relationships Aotearoa, on the other hand, spends 60 per cent of its time face-to-face with clients.

“We are far better at delivering services to vulnerable people.”

Counselling service future threatened From P1 “It’s an intensive service and it is directly in response to what Government has asked us to prepare for,” Mr Thomas said.

“The irony of this is the Government have told us we have to be providing intensive services to families, and we do it, they don’t adequately fund it and we go under.”

Mr Thomas said Relationships Aotearoa also offers programmes for children who are witnesses to violence.

“We are really concerned that children who witness violence won’t have any support to process the issues that come around that,” he said.

Another concern that Relationships Aotearoa currently has, is that they have not yet heard from the Minister of Justice and Courts Amy Adams.

When contacted yesterday a spokesperson for Ms Adams said she had not been asked to comment on the story, but the Government’s views were in line with those expressed by Social Development Minister Anne Tolley.

Milk prices continue slide

Watson wants the chance to speak

There was more bad news for Mid Canterbury dairy farmers this week, with milk prices slipping backwards for the fifth consecutive time in Fonterra’s GlobalDairyTrade auction on Tuesday night.

Prices fell 2.2 per cent, to $US2472 a tonne.

The industry has been in decline since last season’s record price of $8.40 per kilogram of milksolids, with this year’s payout currently sitting on $4.50.

Hamilton Hindin Greene investment advisor Grant Davies said a number of political, geographical and trade-related factors were pushing dairy prices down, including political

events, geographic factors, and trade.

Russia’s ban on imported dairy products from the EU, US, Australia, Canada and Norway has had a direct hit. Russia was the second largest importer of dairy products after China, importing three billion litres each year. Russia’s main dairy import is cheese, 90 per cent of which came from banned countries.

This has forced producers to either scale back production to meet demand, or focus on exporting to other markets.

It would appear that most are choosing the latter option, Mr Davies said.

The removal of the European Union (EU) milk quotas has also had an impact. The quota

system was initiated after subsidised milk production consistently outstripped demand.

Geographic factors leading to lower diary prices relate to the ability of some of the country’s trade partners to produce a kilogram of milksolids for significantly less than less intensive kiwi dairy systems.

Many economists are predicting dairy prices to remain depressed for some time, and this is bad news for Mid Canterbury’s dairy dominant economy.

Locally the average herd contains 850 cows. DairyNZ estimates operating costs to be around the $4kgMS mark, with a debt servicing load of $1-$1.20kgMS. With the milk prices for this season at

$4.50kgMS most farmers will be operating at a loss.

However, Mr Davies is optimistic about the longer term future.

“Looking forward to the 2015/2016 season, we can expect the price of milk to increase under the following scenario, Russia’s one year ban on imported dairy products is lifted in August, the EU’s growth in milk production tracks domestic demand, the US doesn’t experience another year of cheap supplementary feed, and as China works through their WMP stockpile their demand comes back to the market,” he said.

However, Mr Davies said it was unlikely all these ducks would line up at the same time.

How much you punt and how much you collect will be a secret between man (or woman) and machine for many people placing bets at this year’s Harness Jewels raceday.

The May 30 meeting that will see harness racing’s best two, three and four-year-olds battle it out over a mile on the Ashburton Raceway track will also see the debut of kiosk betting on an Ashburton race day.

Yesterday staff from the TAB were on site installing the machines.

Next week they will tackle the task of setting up dozens of terminals in betting windows and in the two, 350 person plus marquees that will be erected on site.

The six self-service terminals belong to the New Zealand Racing Board and have been set up in the public dining area under the main stand. They will significantly boost the betting

options available for punters in that part of the complex, as there are only two betting windows available, raceway manager Fiona Stuart said.

“They provide another option for punters and we were keen to get them as a lot of hotels now use stand alone machines and a lot of people are quite comfortable using them. They’ve been really popular at Riccarton,” she said.

The machines are simple to operate with pre-loaded vouch-

ers available from either a kiosk or a betting window.

“You just keep using them until the money runs out or you cash them in,” Mrs Stuart said.

The self-service terminals, however, will be small fry compared to the number of manned betting windows on course on the day that will involve well over 100 people working on terminals and in banking cash.

Most of those are sourced from a well trained staffing pool in Christchurch.

Convicted double-murderer Scott Watson has been seen in public for the first time in 17 years, seeking the opportunity to discuss his case with an investigative journalist.

Watson appeared in court on Tuesday morning to seek a judicial review of a decision by the Chief Executive of Corrections to refuse him a meeting with North and South reporter Mike White.

Watson is serving 17 years for the murder of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope. He has always maintained his innocence.

After a full day hearing, Justice Rachel Dunningham reserved her decision as to whether Watson could meet with the journalist.

Corrections lawyer Paul Rishworth told the court the chief executive made his decision in line with the law, and balanced many different factors.

Under correction rules, the chief executive must give permission for interviews to be conducted.

Watson’s lawyer Kerry Cook said Watson had gained hope from the high-profile cases of David Bain and Teina Pora, and he hoped the public would also lend their support to his claims of a miscarriage of justice.

“Mr Watson says he’s the victim of a miscarriage of justice, and that is what he wishes to be interviewed about,” he said.

Cook claimed any impact on victims would be overruled by a possible miscarriage of justice.

Watson, who hasn’t been seen publicly for many years, sat quietly next to his lawyer dressed in a shirt and tie, and spoke only briefly to determine where to sit.

His father, Chris Watson, said getting his son’s story into the media would help a campaign to see a Criminal Cases Review Commission set up to look at miscarriages of justice.

Meanwhile, Watson will soon have his case examined by a group set up to investigate possible miscarriages of justice.

The New Zealand Public Interest Project (NZPIP) is set to launch on July 13. It is part of an initiative between the University of Canterbury and a panel of experts, including Watson’s lawyer Kerry Cook.

In brief Air strikes kill 170 Air strikes by a US-led coalition against the Islamic State group in northeastern Syria have killed around 170 jihadists in the past 48 hours, a monitoring group says. “The jihadists were killed in the past 48 hours in the province of Hasakeh, nearly all of them in very intense air strikes by the international coalition which is helping Kurdish forces in the area,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights yesterday. In its latest update on the coalition’s operations, the US military said in a statement that the alliance’s warplanes carried out seven strikes near Hasakeh.

Adams, Charles make history Prince Charles has become the first British royal to meet Irish republican leader Gerry Adams, on a visit that will take him to the scene of his greatuncle’s murder by the IRA. Charles shook hands with Adams yesterday, the veteran president of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the no longer active Irish Republican Army paramilitary group.

The prince and Adams, both 66, met at the National University of Ireland’s campus in Galway, shortly after Charles started a two-day visit to the republic.

They shook hands in public then had a private meeting at Adams’ request, during which the republican figurehead said both expressed “regret” over the Troubles - the three dec-

ades of sectarian bloodshed in Northern Ireland which left 3500 people dead.

“We did discuss the need for the entire process to move forward... and the need to heal,” Adams said.

“I think it’s fair to say that Charles is also looking to the future and wants to be a positive influence.

“Both he and we expressed regret for what happened from 1968 onwards.”

Adams said of the 15-minute meeting: “It obviously was a big thing for him to do and it was also a big thing for us to do.”

Adams has always rejected allegations that he was a key figure in the IRA, which murdered Charles’ beloved greatuncle, godfather and mentor Earl Mountbatten in 1979.

Before the visit, Adams had referred to Charles by his title as colonel-in-chief of the British army’s Parachute Regiment.

Soldiers from the regiment were found responsible for the killing of unarmed civilians during the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre - one of the worst incidents in The Troubles.

Seven years later, the IRA blew up a boat carrying Mountbatten at Mullaghmore off the west coast of Ireland, in one of their most high-profile assassinations.

The 79-year-old, who was the last viceroy of Britishruled India and a father figure to Charles, was killed along with two relatives, and Paul Maxwell, a 15-year-old local boy who worked on the fishing boat.

The prince is expected to travel today to the rugged stretch of coastline near where Mountbatten’s murder took place, becoming the first royal to do so.

Adams and other senior Sinn Fein members boycotted Queen Elizabeth II’s groundbreaking visit to Ireland in 2011, the first by a British monarch since the future Republic of Ireland gained independence from Britain in 1922.

Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan said Charles’ visit would celebrate Irish-British ties “while also acknowledging more difficult moments from the past”.

Charles kicked off the trip by praising the “wonderful spirit” of the Irish and the “fun of being in Ireland”.

Nine held over London jewel heist Police have arrested nine men over an audacious heist in London’s diamond district last month, when a gang drilled through a reinforced concrete vault and broke into 72 safe deposit boxes.

Seven suspects aged between 48 and 76 were arrested during raids on 12 addresses in London and surrounds yesterday, which yielded several bags of goods thought to have been stolen from the underground vault in Hatton Garden.

Another two, aged 43 and 58, were arrested later in the capital.

All nine remain in custody.

“A number of large bags containing significant amounts of high value property have been recovered from one address,” a statement from London’s Metropolitan Police said.

“Officers are confident these are items stolen during the burglary.”

Media reports suggest diamonds, jewels and cash worth tens of millions of pounds were taken during the heist on the night of April 3, at the start of the Easter bank holiday weekend.

The Metropolitan Police,

known as Scotland Yard, have been criticised for their response to the burglary after admitting that officers did not follow up an alarm at the vault.

“At times we’ve been portrayed as if we have acted like Keystone Cops,” Commander Peter Spindler said.

“But I want to reassure you that in the finest traditions of Scotland Yard, these detectives have done their utmost to bring justice to the victims of this callous crime.”

The thieves drilled through the 50 centimetre concrete wall of the vault using what is be-

lieved to have been a diamondtipped “Hilti” coring drill.

Detectives found no sign of forced entry into the main building, and believe that the thieves climbed down a lift shaft to reach the basement vault.

Photographs from the scene showed piles of dust-covered safety-deposit boxes with their lids crow-barred open and contents emptied and a safety door with its bars cut.

Tools including angle-grinders, concrete drills and crowbars were left behind.

An oil pipeline has ruptured, dumping oil into the Pacific ocean near Santa Barbara, California, the US Coast Guard says. The pipeline runs along a coastal highway, and the leak sullied waters at a nearby beach, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Andrea Anderson.

The leak - which began yesterday - affected a pipeline operated by Plains All America Pipeline, which was able to stop the flow of oil, the company said. It said the oil reached the ocean through a drain which has now been blocked off, and “no additional oil is reaching the water”.

Record heroin bust US agents in New York have seized a record-breaking $US50 million ($NZ68.2 million) worth of heroin smuggled from Mexico in the biggest such haul in state history.

The more than 70 kilos of heroin was seized from a vehicle parked in an upmarket neighbourhood of the Bronx, near Horace Mann, one of America’s most prestigious private schools. The drugs were found in 20 packages labelled “Rolex” in a hidden compartment under the floor of a Chevrolet Suburban, prosecutors said yesterday. Suspects Jose Mercedes and Yenci Cruz Francisco have been charged with trafficking and criminal possession, and denied bail.

Victims identified Investigators have identified the remains of all 150 people aboard a Germanwings flight that was deliberately crashed into the French Alps, allowing them finally to be laid to rest. Experts have taken over six weeks to painstakingly match DNA found at the crash site to that provided by the victims’ families. The Germanwings Airbus 320 crashed in the French Alps on March 24 en route from Barcelona to Duesseldorf.

Executioners sought Saudi Arabia has advertised vacancies for eight executioners after beheading nearly as many people since the start of the year as it did in the whole of 2014. The civil service ministry said that no qualifications were necessary and that applicants would be exempted from the usual entrance exams. It said that as well as beheadings, the successful candidates would be expected to carry out amputations ordered by the courts under the kingdom’s strict version of Islamic sharia law.

shburton District councillors will have no choice but to accept a pay rise that, in an around-about sort-of way, should encourage people to get interested in local politics.

Councillors will today discuss a Remuneration Authority determination to raise their salary pool by 8.6 per cent.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. Ratepayers expect an average 6.5 per cent increase in rates this coming year and the council is about to consider a long-term plan in which the average rates increase will peak at more than 11 per cent.

Meanwhile, depressed milk prices, the lingering effects of the drought and yesterday, the slump in the price of grain, have put new emphasis on job security and on keeping the purse strings done up, tight.

The council cannot appeal, modify or refuse the determination: the money will come, leaving councillors to decide whether they should give it away.

Some at better-paid councils give their increases to charity.

MPs, faced with a 5.4 per cent increase this year, changed the law to index their rates with pay rises in the state sector – but even then, they remained relatively well-paid.

It could be argued our councillors are relatively well-paid compared to many ratepayers but they are still “low income” when their roles and responsibilities are weighed alongside their recompense.

Their decisions direct millions of dollars of spending and shape the way our district grows. We expect them to work as long as it takes to get the results we want.

This reinforces the notion of civic sacrifice but it makes it difficult to see why people would risk financial burden for such a thankless, risky job.

There is an argument that a decent pay rate might make the role more accessible to a wider pool of talent; that people from more walks of life will play their part if very busy civic service also helped pay the bills.

The latest pay rise does not make being a councillor a career – but it suggests its value is growing.

A steady increase in violence, additions, immorality, family breakdown, dysfunction and a huge lack of respect for others and authority. Social agencies are stretched beyond their means.

Having been a Bible in Schools teacher for over 10 years I have found most children are interested in and enjoy learning about the life of Jesus, the things he did while on earth and his wonderful love for people.

We have in Whangaparoa a family heading to court with allegations their daughter was segregated and humiliated because they opted her out of these lessons.

To me the issue here is not the fault of the R.E. Teacher or programme but the school’s negligence in not providing a safe environment for those whose parents choose to opt them out.

Why should one incident be the catalyst to cause a review of Section 78 of the Education Act? I hope our children are not going to be robbed of this Christian heritage and their right to choose how they live life.

o the Government is to bring in a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) after all. Buy property, sell it within two years and a day and “you’ll pay”.

What’s more, as an overseas buyer, in particular, you are going to need an IRD number and a New Zealand bank account.

So that’s it then.

It seems our finance-savvy PM, Mr John “my hands are still firmly on the tiller” Key, has had an epiphany whereby he has suddenly discovered that a CGT, the very policy he has so often rejected and scorned in the past is, in fact, what is now needed in Auckland to put a stop to the relentless rise of property prices in that city, to the point where one million dollars will soon be the starting point for a first home buyer.

Except the above is not quite what has happened. In only a small way does this mini CGT resemble the full-scale and “original” Capital Gains Tax so firmly written off by Mr Key in the build-up to the last election and more severely rubbished by Mr Little and Labour since, when, despite pointing out its perceived advantages, found it had no appeal to the electorate at large.

Thus, as a non vote winner, it had to be consigned to that long list of ideas which had seemed a good idea at the time but proved less than successful on the day.

So, the new proposed legislation – not due to hit the streets at much more than a moderate walking pace until October – has to qualify as “the capital gains tax you are having when you are not having a capital gains tax”.

Thus, he also finds himself inadvertently, and certainly unenthusiastically, in the Key camp on this, which would not be his first choice position.

The Leader of the Labour Party, the said Mr Little, it seems to me – in passing – would be wise to lighten up in his public utterances and appearances.

A permanent frown and a grumpy attitude are not what anti-Nats are looking for. Mr Key, after all has laughed and “joshed” his way with very great success ever since he first got his hands on that tiller.

Suitably grave on suitable occasions, yes, but a boyish smile and a coy chuckle when the news is good.

That should be Andy’s winning formula.

Banks to slash mortgage rates

BY CHRISTOPHER ADAMS Westpac could join a mortgagerate battle after Kiwibank and ANZ slashed their rates amid rising competition in the homeloan market.

And there’s more good news for borrowers, with a banking expert saying rates may track lower, possibly below 5 per cent.

ANZ made big changes across its fixed rates at the weekend, including cutting its four-year fixed rate by three-quarters of a percentage point from 6.49 per cent to 5.75 per cent.

That change would save borrowers $50 a week on a $400,000 loan over 30 years.

ANZ’s one-year and two-year fixed rates plunged from 5.99 per cent to 5.59 per cent, while its two-year special remained unchanged at 5.39 per cent.

Kiwibank followed on Monday, cutting three of its rates.

Its one-year standard rate fell to 5.39 per cent from 5.59 per cent and its five-year rate dropped from 5.79 per cent to 5.60 per cent.

Asked whether Westpac would react to its competitors’ changes, a spokeswoman said: “We’re considering our options.”

Westpac’s standard one, two and three-year rates are set at 5.99 per cent.

The last big rates move came in February when TSB offered a 10-year fixed rate of 5.89 per cent, prompting other banks, including ASB and HSBC, to go lower.

ASB’s head of home lending, Vince Clark, said New Zealand’s home-loan market continued to be competitive and rates were constantly under review.

Polling of some 3000 members of the public and businesses, scores local government poorly on three core measures of competence, to give the sector a reputation score of 29 out of a possible 100, says the sector’s national body, Local Government New Zealand.

Key findings of the ColmarBrunton research, which was undertaken in mid-2014 for the first time and will be repeated annually, sought views in a range of areas grouped into the categories of performance, local leadership, and communication and interaction.

The average score for performance, which covered factors such as value for money, financial management and ability to manage community affairs came in at 28 per cent, while local leadership scores averaged 26 per cent.

“The results aren’t that flash,” said the chairman of LGNZ, Lawrence Yule, although the results were consistent with similar polling in Britain and Australia.

LGNZ would be introducing “a significant programme over coming months to drive positive change”.

Among likely initiatives was to create a nationally agreed accord between the local government sector and central government, akin to existing localised housing accords, to agree “shared

priorities and areas of work for the country as a whole”.

Communication and interaction, covering factors such as ease of engagement, willingness to listen, and opportunities for people to have their say, came in at an average 32 per cent.

Business perceptions of local government were more negative than those of the general public, the poll found, with businesses wanting greater efforts to grow local economic opportunities, preferential access to procurement contracts, and better building and resource consent processes.

The general public expressed greatest concern about trusting local government to make good spending decisions, provide good value for rates dollars spent, leadership by councillors and strategies for prosperity and well-being.

The poll found local government was more important with men than women, older people, ratepayers, business owners employing six or more people, and businesses involved in wholesale or retail distribution and transport.

LGNZ also announced its intention to publish a “thought leadership” paper mid-year on regional transport links “to ensure regional development and growth across all of New Zealand”.

“Transport infrastructure is a critical component of regional economic success and LGNZ is advocating for transport decision-making that underpins regional growth objectives,” said Yule in a statement. The initiative was partly motivated by the recent decision by Air New Zealand to stop serving some smaller regional centres.

Ravensdown are no longer offering free nutrient budgets to shareholders in order for them to complete their Farm Environment Plans – a move separating the co-operative from its main rival Ballance Agri-Nutrients.

All farmer shareholders that are also part of the Acton Farmers Irrigation Co-operative or Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme have been advised they will be charged a starting price of $500 excluding GST. The price will vary depending on the complexity of each farm and their underlying soils.

Regional manager John Hodgkin said it was a fast moving area and “definitely one which our customers are asking us for help”.

“It is vital that local farmers consider the intended purpose and accuracy of their nutrient budgets very carefully because any version they submit as part of their regulatory compliance needs to stand up to any possible future scrutiny.”

Ravensdown plans to hold three open days from June 2-4 in which nutrient management staff will collect all information required to finalise farm nutrient budgets.

Farmers will be required to book a two and a half hour session and if they have more than one farm they will have to book more than one time slot. With over 50 fully certified individuals the fertiliser co-op has the largest number of fully certified nutrient management staff in the country.

In return for the $500 fee Ravensdown will offer farmers a free smartmap of their farm.

Ballance Agri-Nutrients have advised The Guardian they have no current plans to impose a cost on their shareholders to complete the same service.

Currently Ballance shareholders are entitled to one free nutrient budget per year – a service which has kept them extremely busy recently.

Under ECan’s Canterbury land and water regional plan all farmers are required to undertake complicated nutrient loss calculations using a computer software programme called Overseer to establish their average nitrogen loss and complete a Farm Environment Plan.

In order for BCI and Acton Farmers Irrigation Co-operative to gain consent on behalf of their shareholders to discharge nutrients into groundwater they must have the completed plans from arable and dairy support farmers to ECcan by June 30 and from all other farmers by August 15.

A major conference for New Zealand’s number one export vegetable will be held in Ashburton in July when the Potatoes New Zealand Conference comes to town.

The conference will bring many of the 170 potato growers from around the country together to discuss latest research and will include a Potato Research and Development session at FAR’s annual conference.

Starting on July 23, growers will be able to hear a number of speakers talking about current issues including the global agribusiness agenda, irrigation and infrastructure, disease management and the future of the potato industry.

Growers will also be able to tour Pendarves potato farmer Ross Hewson’s property and will hear from the world’s largest grain farmer, Australian Ron Greentree.

Ploughing time again It will be a big weekend for ploughing enthusiasts with two Mid Canterbury clubs set to turn the turf.

The Hinds Young Farmers’ Club will stage its annual ploughing match on Saturday, kicking off at 10.30am at Ian Lowe’s farm on Swamp Road.

As well as the usual vintage and reversible qualifying classes, the horses will be out in force this year, with both Colin Drummond, from Erewhon Station, and John Chynoweth putting up two teams of clydesdales.

The big fellas will be back in harness on Sunday, this time at the Ashburton Vintage Machinery Club’s match, to be held on the corner of Beach and Christies roads, starting at 10.30am on Sunday.

Both events are open to the public and entry is free.

TINWALD STOCK SALE REPORT A consignment of halfbred lambs from Otago boosted store lamb numbers at this week’s stock sale at Tinwald.

Triton an all-round winner

T

he likes of a drive to the gates of Erewhon Station is perhaps as adventurous as many owners of the hordes of New Zealand’s best selling new vehicles - SUVs and utes - are likely to get.

For most of these vehicles now add real comfort and road holding to their elevated ride and carrying versatility, so are much more car-like to drive, both as an everyday runabout and also as a long distance cruiser.

Ute-wise an updated Colorado has already arrived, and there’s new versions of the Ranger, Hilux, Navara and BT50 due later this year.

But first off the rank, as far as being completely new is Mitsubishi’s Triton as featured today.

And where better to experience its driving capabilities, than on a mid-week, almost traffic free trip to those gates of Erewhon, complete with Bernard Egan, to relay both his impressions, and of course tell the odd joke or two.

While it’s instantly recognisable as a Triton, bold grille and all, the new styling, complete with the high waisted tray and neat tail lights is much more cohesive and decidedly better looking.

So, just in case there is anyone out there who is planning to head along next week and spend a bit of their hard earned, here’s the best advice I can give after a lifetime of following the sport.

If you’re a little naïve, the simple each-way bet will be your best friend, minimum $2.

You can spend as much as you like over $2 and can even take a bet that favours one option more than the other eg: $2 to win and $3 to place an so on.

But how do you find the right

horse to chuck a lazy fiver on?

The favourite in each race will be the horse paying the least.

The Harness Jewels has a concept similar to the Tour De France with a Yellow Leader’s Jersey and it’s the horse in each category who has earned the most money during the season.

They are generally the best horse of the crop.

And if all else fails pick the prettiest horse, or the horse with the prettiest, or cutest, driver.

Or you could do what most Mid Canterbury people do back Ricky May, he’s never far from the action.

Ashburton Indoor Bowls For those that didn’t catch up with the news, New Zealand defeated Australia on the weekend, in Indoor Bowls.

And if you’re anything like me and enjoy the pure satisfaction of beating our old foe from across the ditch in any competition – you’ll be pretty happy with that news.

Playing for the Henselite Trophy, the Mat Blacks, as they are known, were comprehensive victors winning 38-28 at the end of three days of play.

So even though it might seem like a humble sort of sport which is a relaxed, while competitive form of leisure, bowls is also very serious for a large number of people around the country.

If you’re not keen on being in that side of the sport – but wouldn’t mind seeing how some of the best go about their business then make sure you get to the nationals at Timaru next month because all of New Zealand’s best will be on show.

Speaking of the nationals, the draws are now available on the New Zealand Indoor Bowls website.

Great to see a good number of Ashburton players making the trek down the main road to compete.

Well done to Ken Mackenzie on his Jim Patterson singles win on the weekend too – and to Mat Bassett who he played in the final – a thrilling game to watch from start to finish.

Good luck to those playing against Ellesmere tonight and to the ladies competing in the Ladies 10’s on the weekend.

Lions Club of Hinds & Districts Forty members plus guests from Mayfield Lions attended the monthly Tea Meeting at the Hinds Hall on Tuesday. President Robert Ellis opened with introductions then presented two long service awards - Lion Mervyn Gray 30 years and Lion Don McFarlane 10 years.

The ladies of Southern Netball served a full meal before Club Directors presented monthly reports which included invitations to forthcoming functions and sports tournaments.

The 32 members attending Grease on Wednesday were advised of their meeting time and President Robert spoke about the Nepal donation box at the door and advised that money raised would be matched by club funds.

Lion Brian Ellis thanked and presented a cheque to the catering ladies, Lion Alan Johnston drew the raffle then Lion Colin Fleming introduced the guest speaker Mr Don Geddes. Total attention and silence prevailed for the next hour as Don described his 6 weeks on Adams Island, part of the Auckland Island group, working with a DOC staff member, locating, identifying, banding and measuring Albatross adults and chicks.

Don’s descriptive commentary accompanied by his amazing pho-

tographs showed the varied bird life, wildlife and plants on the islands and the hazardous conditions and terrain they encountered. He described visiting other islands in the group, before being picked up and returned to NZ

by the Navy. Lion Dave Thompson thanked Don and presented a certificate of appreciation. Lion Stuart Wilson raised further funds for Nepal from fines before the meeting closed at 10 pm.

Ashburton Savage Club The biennial raid (visit) from the Waimate Savage Club was held on Sunday May 17 with 35 members, lead by their Great Chief Max Crean, arriving by bus, for lunch at the MSA at 11.45am. Eight of our members joined them for lunch.

At 1.15pm, the raiding party arrived at the Ashburton Savage Club hall for a social time with our members, before the afternoon korero (concert), which commenced at 2.00pm.

Following the March In, induction of the Waimate Chief and Welcome from our Great Chief John Davis, the afternoon’s programme commenced. All items were presented by the raiding party.

On Monday 18th May Grey Power Ashburton welcomed approximately 50 members to their annual general meeting at the Seniors Centre. President Ruth Thomas welcomed those present.

After the raffle was drawn, Ruth introduced the committee and officers to the members. The meeting closed 3.00pm.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus President Avis Kingsland welcomed members and a visitor to the May meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club. After the National Anthem was sung, birthdays were celebrated, and Karen McIntyre was congratulated on her 60th wedding anniversary. Members stood in silence as a mark of re-

spect for two members who had passed away recently.

Bernie Tutty told of the trip to Aeroview soon, also the mid-winter luncheon after the June meeting. The rest of the programme featured Anzac Memories.

Mara told a story about the flag and its meaning, Avis, Maxine, Val, Ann and Mary told of relatives who had fought in the Wars. We were told of a soldier who took a horse to the war, the soldier returned but the horse did not.

All seemed to agree the soldiers who returned were never the same afterwards.

After morning tea we had some light entertainment, Susan Spencer, Jenny Beach and Margaret Jackson sang and danced, Penny Wilson played the piano.

As well, Karen spoke of a relative who served in the Boer War and showed a jacket that had been worn there. Nellie, Margaret, Betty, Gwen also spoke of their family members and President Avis read a story about the Last Post beginning in 1862 during the Civil War. The programme was thought provoking and showed the futility of war.

The meeting concluded with the President giving the Thought for the Day – “In youth, we run into difficulties, in old age, difficulties run into us.”

Cricket Australia (CA) is yet to finalise plans for an inaugural day-night Test, but remain confident it will go ahead during this summer’s threematch series against New Zealand.

Both cricket boards remain supportive, with Adelaide Oval considered the venue most likely to host the innovative fixture.

Warriors rally past Rockets Golden State rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to beat Houston 110-106 in the opening game of their NBA Western Conference finals series yesterday, with Stephen Curry hitting two free throws in the final seconds to seal the result and push his personal total to 34 points.

The Warriors turned the game around by going for a smaller, more nimble lineup and closed the first half on a run of 21 points to 4 to take a threepoint lead at halftime.

The hosts then held off Houston in the fourth quarter, with the Rockets’ capacity to use their size advantage diminished

by the loss of centre Dwight Howard to a knee injury.

“It really stretches people out,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of his lineup full of shooters. “Houston does the same thing. It was an interesting chess match, because they like to go small and we like to go small.”

James Harden, the runnerup to Curry in the MVP voting, nearly brought the Rockets back in the fourth quarter. He finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals, but his late push fell short.

“You can’t give a really good shooting team easy layups and

confidence,” said Harden, who shot 11 of 20 from the field.

“That’s what we did in the second quarter.”

Game 2 is Friday in Oakland, and it’s unclear if Howard can play.

“Hopefully Dwight is healthy and we can play big,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. “We didn’t have that option with Dwight out.”

Harden mixed in a series of step-back jumpers and driving layups to help Houston even the score at 95-95 midway through the fourth.

But the Warriors shut down Houston for long stretches, and Curry kept hitting shots

to match Harden’s brilliance.

Curry connected on a 3-pointer and converted a layup to put Golden State up 108-97 with 2:01 remaining.

“It’s entertaining basketball.

We’re both supposed to help our team win and do what we can to impact the game,” said Curry.

The Rockets never relented, though, with Trevor Ariza making a 3-pointer that trimmed the Warriors’ lead to 108-106 with 14.6 seconds to play.

Curry twice caught the inbounds pass, and the Rockets were forced to foul him both times. He hit both free throws to seal Golden State’s win.

NSW to unsettle Maroons superstars NSW believe they have the number of Queensland’s superstars and can rattle their cages during next Wednesday’s State of Origin series opener in Sydney.

Blues enforcer Beau Scott says it’s no secret he will target Johnathan Thurston while the Blues said they will also get up in the face of Greg Inglis.

“It’s sort of the role of the people that play in my position to shut down the halves and the five-eighths of the team and the ones that make the difference,” Scott said.

Three Super Rugby games should still be enough for Quade Cooper to prove his Wallabies World Cup worth, according to Queensland Reds coach Richard Graham.

The Reds have taken a cautious approach with Cooper, who has fully recovered from his fractured scapula but was not considered for this Friday’s clash with the Sharks at Suncorp Stadium. Graham said picking Cooper would be too great a risk, given his lack of contact work at training and loss of strength and bulk following a second serious shoulder injury this year. “We’re probably only a couple of days short, but given he’s been out for so long and he’s had a couple of injuries in that area it’s best to be conservative,” he said. Graham confirmed Cooper would be ready for next weekend’s trip to face the Western Force, before the Reds close out the season against the Chiefs (home) and Waratahs (away).

Hinchcliffe improving IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe is in a stable condition after undergoing surgery on his upper left thigh following a high-speed crash during practice for the Indianapolis 500. The 28-yearold Canadian, who is the latest driver of several to crash during practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, hit a barrier in turn three after apparently experiencing mechanical problems with his race car. Following the surgery, he was moved to the Indiana University Methodist Hospital’s intensive care unit on Monday. “Obviously we’re relieved that James is awake and out of surgery,” said Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team owner Sam Schmidt.

Messy break-up Scottish giants Dundee United are in the frame to own the Newcastle Jets after Nathan Tinkler’s messy break-up with the A-League club.

Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group (HSG) licence to own the club has been revoked by Football Federation Australia, who will own and control the Jets’ new licence.

Lord’s challenge awaits NZ

By Andrew Alderson Tuesday’s removal of the covers at Lord’s, after a shard of sunlight pierced the rain and overcast skies, revealed what might be described as a “Where’s Wally?” pitch for the 100th test between New Zealand and England.

Identifying the 61m2 of turf, which will determine whether the visitors can win their first May test here, was a struggle.

The Kermit-green strip camouflaged into the sloping outfield.

As a result, five names sprang to mind who might have a principal bearing on the outcome: Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and Queen Elizabeth II. The first four will lead the swing bowling attacks for their respective teams; the Queen will, presumably, be the head on the coin that’s tossed to determine who is sent in to bat.

“We [Southee and Boult] had a couple of Dukes with us in India. I was bowling them to a mitt out in the middle before games when I hadn’t been picked. The seam is more pronounced and they tend to be slightly harder. It feels nicer in the hand to bowl [than a Kookaburra].”

Southee would not accept England were vulnerable after drawing their West Indies series. He preferred to focus on a New Zealand team seeking to

sustain their current success. “[The last series here] started the run we’ve been on. We’ve played a great brand of cricket the last couple of years. [Captain] Brendon [McCullum] and [coach] Mike [Hesson] have created a culture where players can play their natural games.

“We competed for the majority of that [last Lord’s] test, but were undone by one hell of a spell from Broad.”

He also paid tribute to Anderson who, with 397 wickets at 29.22, has the most test wickets by an England bowler.

$62.5m baseball deal

Cuban infielder Hector Olivera has finalized a $62.5 million, six-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and predicted he could be playing in the major leagues within a month. “When players are coming back [to New Zealand] or departing, we have a policy framework we use which largely rewards players who have shown

some loyalty and longevity to New Zealand rugby,” he said.

“There are some trigger points where you might make some exceptions, particularly if they’re going to be available for the whole campaign. We’ve done that particularly for guys who are returning from Japan.

“Jerome Kaino from the Blues was granted some leniency in that regard and we’ve done it for others. We looked at Charles and while he is a well-known player he has played only three or four full seasons of Super Rugby anyway and he doesn’t

trigger our policy. He cannot stay for the full campaign.”

Asked if the decision was “mean-spirited” or “heavy-handed”, Tew said: “We’re in charge of one of the most precious gems in New Zealand society – we don’t play cheap shots or make knee-jerk reactions.

“On balance we’ve said look, Charles is committed to another future for the next three years, he’s not playing in New Zealand for a long period of time and we’re better to get on without him and let some other player have that jersey.”

An unbeaten Ashburton College side will face off against Hampstead tonight in the fifth and final week of the first round of premier netball.

College coach Angela Mitchell said while her team was looking forward to tonight’s match, the line-up will be a little different.

“We’ve actually got a few of the senior players away this week for the Mount Hutt College Ball but it’s a great opportunity for us to give some of our up-and-coming players a chance to taste a bit of premier netball,” Mitchell said.

The team are missing four players but won’t be pulling from their B team to make up the numbers.

“College B are playing an important game after us so we are not going to take their players this week, so we have got some of our younger talent.”

Instead the team will recruit one year nine netballer, Ashlee Strawbridge, and a couple of their under18 players.

Mitchell said it won’t affect their teams as they play on a Saturday.

College kept their winning streak alight last night during their second game of the Canterbury SuperNet competition, pulling off a 25-24 win over St Andrew’s College.

At the other end of the table, Collegiate, who are staring down the barrel of relegation will play off against Methven.

Coach Sonya Frew said she was aware her team would likely be making the drop down to Senior A, but was confident the

team would work their way back up to the top.

“It’s been a hard season because I have a lot of players away, so I actually haven’t had a full training run yet,” Frew said.

“My view is that we are probably better to be down where we are going, and we want to work hard to get back up there.”

Remaining premier teams Celtic and United will play off tonight in the early round.

In senior A, College B sit at the top of table and are looking to make the jump up to premier for round two. Tonight they play Hampstead B. Also in senior A, Rakaia play Methven B and Allenton, who are looking at possible relegation down to senior B, will face off against Celtic B.

It’s been hailed as a wonderful act of sportsmanship and Australian mateship.

But Richie Porte’s Giro d’Italia title dream has taken a nightmare hit after the gesture from compatriot Simon Clarke backfired horribly.

And the fact that it was Clarke handing him a wheel begs the question - where were title contender Porte’s teammates?

The innocuous-looking 10th stage became a disaster for Porte when he lost 47 seconds because of a flat tyre with about seven kilometres left.

Race judges then compounded the Team Sky leader’s misery when they penalised him another two minutes for accepting a wheel from Clarke, who rides for Orica-GreenEDGE. The twin setback meant Porte dropped from third overall, only 22 seconds behind race leader Alberto Contador, to 12th at three minutes and nine seconds.

The time loss is not fatal to Porte’s aim of a podium finish in the three-week Grand Tour.

But he will need a lot to go right from here.

Predictably, the time penalty generated passionate reaction in and around the sport.

Under road cycling rules, a rider cannot give “non-regulation assistance to a rider of another team”.

The rule is not new and is wellknown. Clarke was also handed the two-minute punishment.

Giro race director Mauro Vegni said the judges had no choice but to penalise Porte and Clarke.

“Clearly there was little to be done, rules are rules, and I think rules have to be respected for the credibility of this sport and, in this case, the credibility of the Giro d’Italia,” Vegni said.

After the wheel change, it is understood fellow OricaGreenEDGE rider Michael Matthews helped with some initial pacing as Porte unsuccessfully tried to catch the peloton before the finish.

Clarke was mortified by the fallout from his good deed.

“Feeling sad for @richie_ porte. Tried to help a friend as most would. I’m sorry about the outcome of all this!,” he said on Twitter.

Porte’s Team Sky boss Dave Brailsford didn’t miss the irony of an act of sportsmanship drawing such a costly penalty in a sport which has been beset by cheating in the form of doping.

Sport Ashcoll in control The Ashburton College girls XV scored a win 29-12 over Craighead last night.

Coach Karen McKenzie said the game started off well with Tessa Puleaga scoring within the first two minutes. Things took a turn after that, with Becca Harper Grey collapsing and having to be taken off the field a few short minutes later.

Craighead then scored, bringing the game to 5-5 but College picked up, bringing the score to 12-5 with another try and conversion.

College managed to sneak in another try before half-time but Craighead came back strongly scoring in the second half. College maintained a strong defence and held on to the lead for the duration of the game. The team faces off against Timaru next Wednesday.

Locking crisis creates odd crew

BY KRIS SHANNON A loose forward, a commentator and a debutant – the Chiefs’ locking crisis could create a rather unorthodox combination in the second row tomorrow night.

The Bulls’ physical forward pack may be licking their lips at what awaits them in Rotorua but the Chiefs are confident they can overcome that absence of as many as four front-line locks.

Michael Fitzgerald, the Chiefs’ SOS call this week was answered by an unlikely trio.

The first cab off the rank is Johan Bardoul, a loose forward by trade but signed in the offseason as a fifth locking option.

Bardoul has been seen exclusively at flanker this year but he will wear the No5 jersey against the Bulls after spending the week training in the position.

There remains a possibility Fitzgerald could join Bardoul in the lineout but, after sustaining a haematoma on his thigh against the Hurricanes, he faces a race against time to reach full

fitness. Which is where we meet the two other options in a file marked ‘Plan B’.

Ross Filipo, a Herald on Sunday columnist, could be called out of professional retirement to partner Bardoul. Filipo was a member of the Chiefs’ 2014 squad before playing the last of his nine seasons for Wellington, but the 36-year-old has been keeping busy as a player-coach at club side Hamilton Marist.

Filipo was initially assigned to call Friday’s game for Sky Television but Chiefs assistant Andrew Strawbridge said the fourtest All Black had the full faith

of the coaching staff.

“We do have trust in the guys we throw out each week,” he said. “Ross looked pretty good out there today so we’re pretty confident in him.”

The same was true of 21-year-old Waikato lock Brian Alainu’uese, who could make his Super Rugby debut after being named on the bench. Alainu’uese played twice in pre-season as part of the Chiefs’ wider-training squad and, at 135kg, was expected to relish the rough stuff if thrown into the deep end against the Bulls.

“Brian knows how to handle

himself,” Strawbridge said. “I’m pretty confident Brian will make a physical statement if he gets an opportunity. He’s worked really hard in his conditioning and he’s been with us on and off throughout the season, so we have a lot of confidence in him and in Ross.”

There are some signs the crisis is easing. Retallick could complete his recovery from a shoulder injury in time for next weekend’s visit to the Highlanders, while Symons cleared the concussion protocols but was kept in cotton wool for another week.
