Arrests hit local gangs BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The arrests of key figures in Mid Canterbury’s gang scene has resulted in a drop-off in gang-related activity, police say. The district is still home to gang members, but no dedicated gang houses, and police want the public’s help in keeping it that way, Ashburton’s acting senior sergeant Mark Offen says. “I’d be lying if I said there weren’t gang members in town
but there’s a difference between that and organised gangs,” Mr Offen said. “There are gang members in Ashburton, from all sorts of gangs. They are not necessarily organised and I think it would be fair to say that most of them have come here for work opportunities, or family have moved here and they have followed them later.” As well as patched gang members, Ashburton is also home to
“wannabes” – people who were not necessarily gang members but wanted to be associated with gangs. Gangs represented in Mid Canterbury included ethnic groups and motorbike groups, but there was currently no serious tension brewing between rival groups that police were aware of. Mr Offen said the apprehension of two key figures on the local gang scene last year meant
the current gang situation was quiet, but that could change and the public needed to assist police by being their eyes and ears. He’s urging anyone renting properties to be wary of who they rent to and check potential tenants’ references. He’s aware of cases in other areas where women had been sent to rent properties for gangs. The community played a significant role in preventing crime and could help prevent gangs es-
tablishing in Mid Canterbury by saying ‘no’ to gangs, he said. The community did just that when the Rebels gang tried an unsuccessful move into Ashburton some years ago. At this stage, Mid Canterbury’s gang situation wasn’t at a level to warrant serious concern, according to police. “Our problem here is burglaries, road policing and alcohol. Those are our three main problem areas in Mid Canterbury,” Mr Offen said.
