A Mid Canterbury arable farmer is backing calls for Environment Canterbury to take a harder line with irrigators illegally taking water. David Clark said the majority of farmers stuck to their seasonal limits and had their water-takes monitored by compulsory water meters. But a small group of farmers did not, despite the effect it had on underground aquifers or rivers. He said it was time Environment Canterbury (ECan) started monitoring water consents “without fear or favour” and concentrate on major breaches rather than minor technicalities.
