A Mid Canterbury rugby spectator has been banned from attending rugby matches in the district for a year.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson said an exclusion order had been served by the union on an individual who was not a member of a local rugby club as a result of his involvement in an on-field incident at a match at Hinds on July 2.

The senior B match, between Southern and Hampstead has already been the subject of a complaint of referee

abuse. Hampstead’s captain that day was banned for 45 weeks after admitting verbally and physically abusing the referee.

Both captains had been called out to discuss player conduct after an on-field scuffle between players of both teams; the Hampstead captain verbally abused the referee and was shown a red card. He struck out with force at the referee’s hand holding the card.

Mr Patterson said the banned spectator had entered the field of play. The Guardian understands it happened prior to the red card.

The man is banned from all matches

under the jurisdiction of the Mid Canterbury union until July 31 next year.

That includes matches at the Ashburton Showgrounds and at all the district’s rugby clubs, across all grades.

Rugby union chairman Gerard Rushton said the union could not condone the man’s behaviour.

“The matter as far as we are concerned has now been dealt with.”

He said there were many positive aspects of the game that deserved attention, including the semi-finals of the Watters Cup at the showgrounds this weekend.

Helping traffic to safely pass trucks

Fewer passing lanes and more traffic on the roads around Ashburton is making it difficult to safely pass big trucks.

State highways have a passing lane every few kilometres, but rural roads tend to have fewer so the only option is for drivers to pass on the opposite lane.

A local truck driver said vehicles are finding it hard to get a big enough gap in traffic to make a safe pass.

“You don’t get a big enough break in traffic to have your visibility to do your passing movements.”

He said this leads to drivers hesitating and staying behind the truck, leading to a build-up

Mayor leads the way in nominations Ashburton’s mayor Angus McKay is leading from the front in the run up to this year’s local body election, with his nomination the first to be lodged with the electoral officer for this year’s local body elections.

Mr McKay had earlier indicated he would be seeking a third term as Ashburton’s mayor. He has been nominated by Rupert Philip Curd and Erica Jill Shearer.

Nominations opened on Friday, but Mr McKay’s is the only name on the contenders’ list for any position on the Ashburton District Council, Ashburton Trust, Methven Community Board or Environment Canterbury.

The council will need a line up of councillor candidates with only two current urban district coun-

cillors confirming they will be seeking re-election. Two people have indicated they will be putting their names forward as candidates for the council’s western ward and only one of the current three eastern ward councillors is seeking re-election.

The council is made up of five urban, three eastern and two western ward seats.

The Ashburton Trust has six board seats, but only three of the current board members have indicated they will seek re-election, Environment Canterbury requires one and the Methven Community board, five.

The board’s chairwoman Liz McMillan has indicated she will be standing for the council rather than the board.

Flipping and tumbling through the holidays

Ashburton kids have been keeping active by learning a bit of gymnastics these holidays.

Flips and Tumbles’ holiday programme classes have been running out of the Ashburton College gym and teach kids gymnastics and pakour skills in a safe environment.

The classes are run by Jared Cooper, a recreational manager at Olympia Gym in Christchurch and senior trampolining athlete.

Flips and Tumbles is Jared’s own creation and fellow teacher Brittany Naughton, a recreational gymnastics coach, have been traveling to the Ashburton College gym each day from Christchurch to run the classes.

Mr Cooper said the classes have been full and the kids have been making good progress towards their goals.

He said each child is given a booklet with drawings and word finds they can fill out at home, as well as sections detailing their progress and goals for the classes.

He said it was good for the parents to be able to see what the kids were doing each day and track their improvements.

Sue Templeton, whose son Jack attended Tuesday’s class, said her son already does other gymnastics but the classes were good to keep him active during the holidays.

“It keeps him off the computer and gets him out being physical,” she said.

Civic centre rebuild plans in final stages

The bare bones of Ashburton’s civic building and library rebuild will be laid out for public viewing and comment in less than two weeks.

A project that has an approximate price tag of $16 million and could see the Ashburton District with a new civic centre and library, is in the final planning stages before the rebuild options become public property.

The council’s project design group will meet with the Opus Property team today to run a final check over the material that will go out for public display, council business support manager Paul Brake said.

“They’ll be looking at all the documents, all the details and checking whether anything has been missed or whether there’s anything that could be made clearer,” he said.

For the next stage of public consultation, the six options have been narrowed down to five.

The sixth was for a new library at Ashburton College and for a civic building on a separate inner town site.

This was discounted by councillors.

The final five options will be displayed on panels along with the advantages and disadvantages of each and an approximate costing.

“This will also show a preferred option; that’s not the

council’s preferred option, it’s the option Opus see as the one that is the best choice, but I do believe the options and the preferred option will generate a lot interest,” Mr Brake said.

In April, the council was presented with details on the final options, narrowed down from an original list of 14.

Each was measured against 17 criteria and ranked by Opus.

Additional work has now been carried out on those sites and they have now been ranked.

When work starts on the project will depend on the option chosen and the ability to access the site, he said.

“The costings will build in with some options such as reusing this site is that we’d have to move out and there would be a significant cost in that.”

Details of the public consultation phase are still being finalised by the council but public comment will play a part in the council’s discussions when it selects the final site option, Mr Brake said.

Of the final options, two are on the current civic centre site, either a rebuild or an extension and renovation.

The others are: Build a new library and administration building on part of the Eastfield lot; Build a new library and administration building on the Methodist Church site; Build a new library and administration building on the corner of Cass and Cameron Streets.

Community pool set to be demolished Ashburton’s old community swimming pool on Walnut Avenue will have a date with the bulldozer before the end of the year.

Tender documents for its demolition are currently being prepared by the Ashburton District Council, but work is unlikely to begin until the end of the school year.

The project will be managed by the council but it will be a joint venture between the council and the Ministry of Education – the council owns the pool building while the ministry owns the pool and land. The pool served the community’s aquatic needs for more than 25 years, but it has been unused since the EA Networks Centre’s aquatic complex

opened in May last year.

The pools were then emptied and the building was locked up while its future was decided.

In recent months, however, it has become a target for vandals, with windows smashed and attempts made to refill the pools.

The pools will now be reemptied and security around the building is being increased.

Providing shelter from the storm this winter

The Ashburton Salvation Army is calling for more warm items as the colder months close in around the country.

Ashburton’s Salvation Army Family Store assistant manager Susan Anderson said the store had seen an increase in people buying winter coats and jackets.

Ashburton Salvation Army Major Ken Smith said they had also noticed a rise in food bank use in the past 12 months, especially in winter.

“We have been handing out food packs to more people so they can spend their money on other things like blankets and warm clothes,” he said.

He said the Army also distributes more blankets and linens around the winter time. Across the country, Salvation Army social services have noticed an increased need for food, warmth and shelter as winter sets in and have launched their first winter appeal.

The appeal is called Shelter from the Storm and aims to raise funds to meet the seasonal demand placed on the Salvation Army in winter.

Major Smith said the appeal is a great idea to gather funds to help those in need. “We did buy someone a heater recently and finding an economical choice was the most important thing,” he said.

Women’s Institute members across Mid Canterbury are planning to have a party at the federation’s annual Cup Day and Quizco next week. During the morning the standing floral, cooking, knitting, photography and craft projects will be judged. After lunch the Quizco teams will go head-to-head. This year’s theme will be let’s have a party, and each team has been asked to dress for the occasion, with one group rumoured to be planning to arrive in their nightwear. The day will be held at the 206 Clubrooms on Cameron Street on July 29.

said the company has performed pantomimes in the past and said the success helped them decide on Calamity Dame.

“We looked at mostly comedies but they were all quite heavy and we’ve done quite a few pantomimes before and they have always done really well,” Mr Woods said.

Auditions for Calamity Dame are on Sunday from 10am to 4pm and Monday from 7pm to 9pm in the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall.

An 18-year-old male will appear in Ashburton District Court after handing himself into police yesterday. He has been charged with dangerous driving, driving while suspended and failing to stop and ascertain injury, he has been granted bail until the August 1 court date. This relates to a three vehicle crash on the intersection of Methven Highway and Thomson track on Saturday night.

Body found A body of a man thought to be missing has been found in Southland. Police were searching Forest Hill Scenic Reserve area for Rhys Dunn when they found his body yesterday. There didn’t seem to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and it had been referred to the coroner.

Next of kin were informed, police said. The family were being supported by police and victim support.

Changing Ashburton dancers claim driving habits several national titles and saving lives

Ashburton highland dancers came home with the New Zealand championships in Palmerston North with a large trophy haul and several national titles.

Sarah Gluyas was named overall New Zealand champion in the 18 and over age group.

She won the New Zealand Highland Reel in her age group and placed highly in 10 other dances.

In the under 16 age group, Charlotte Sloper won the New Zealand title for the Irish Reel and is now ranked 8th in New Zealand in this age group.

She was also awarded most points in the under 14 age group.

Britney Moore completed the competition with a ranking of third in New Zealand for dancers under 16 years of age, while Lucy Moore now holds a 10th ranking in this age group.

In the six and under age group, Tamati Graham was the winner of the most points.

Be warned: Police will be targeting seatbelts and mobile phones on Mid Canterbury roads later this month.

A nationwide campaign called Operation Habit will run from July 25 to August 7 and it’s all about getting people into the habit of buckling up and putting their mobile phone away – when that happens there will be fewer serious injuries and deaths on our roads.

National manager of road policing superintendent Steve Greally said it took no time to put on a seat belt and wearing one could save your life in a crash.

From 2012-2014, there were around 57 deaths a year, on average, associated with a restraint not being worn.

In 2015, that jumped to 92 deaths.

Already this year, 41 per cent of vehicle occupants killed in crashes from January to March were not wearing a seatbelt or restraint. That’s 28 people whose deaths may otherwise have been prevented.

Whether you’re the driver or a front seat passenger, Ministry of Transport data shows wearing a seatbelt reduces your chance of death or serious injury in a crash by at least 40 per cent.

Record-challenging warmth returns It could be downright tropical in Ashburton this weekend.

Hot winds are coming New Zealand’s way, bringing abnormally mild temperatures from tomorrow night to early Sunday.

The MetService is predicting a high for Ashburton on Saturday of 16°C and NIWA says the tropical winds will be so warm temperature records are likely to tumble in many places.

Tropical winds from north of Vanuatu will stream southward, allowing temperatures

across the country to rise to levels more typically experienced in late spring than midwinter.

As air blows off the Southern Alps into the lower terrain easy, it will warm considerably.

This is known as a foehn wind.

The system is likely to bring temperatures up to 7°C warmer than average.

Although current legislation allows the use of hands-free mobile phones, Police recommend drivers minimise the potential for distraction by getting into the habit of switching their phones off while driving, or pulling over to make or receive calls.

If you’re caught using a phone while driving, the fine is $80 and 20 demerit points.

Christchurch teen suffers burns A teenager has been taken to hospital after suffering burns while trying to start a fire using petrol.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to Main Street, Oxford, in Canterbury late this afternoon after reports a person had been burned in what was initially thought to be a house fire.

A southern fire communications spokesman said: “The occupant of the property had been trying to light their fire – and unfortunately used an accelerant to do so.”

The incident happened shortly be-

fore 5pm yesterday. The teenager, whose exact age was not available, suffered burns to one of his hands and a leg.

The severity of his injuries was not known, but was “not life-threatening,” the spokesman said.

It is understood the teen had been trying to build a fire in the backyard at the time. He was taken to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.

The Fire Service said the incident showed the importance of not using any kind of accelerant when trying to start a fire.

Isis facing Lybian defeat?

Secretary-General Ban Kimoon says Islamic State fighters in Libya are facing the “distinct possibility” of defeat in their last stronghold and are likely to scatter elsewhere in the North African country and the region.

The UN chief said in a new report to the UN Security Council that member states’ estimates of the number of IS fighters range between 2000 and 7000 from Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Mali, Morocco and Mauritania.

Ban said one member state recently reported between 3000 and 4000 IS fighters in Sirte, the extremist group’s last bastion along Libya’s northern coast which he called “the most active war front” in the country.

But he said as a result of the recent offensive against IS, by forces aligned with the UNbrokered government and others, “the current number of those in Sirte is now likely well under 1000,” with large numbers of those who have recently fled the city likely relocating and regrouping “in smaller and geographically dispersed cells throughout Libya and in neighboring countries.”

Happy Days director/ writer Gary Marshall dies Writer-director Garry Marshall, whose TV hits included Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and box-office successes included Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride, has died. He was 81.

Publicist Michelle Bega says Marshall died in at a hospital in Burbank, California of complications from pneumonia after having a stroke.

Marshall also had an onscreen presence, using his New York accent and gruff

North Korea says it has test-fired ballistic rockets as part of a simulated preemptive attack on South Korea.

The tests were an apparent reference to the three ballistic missile launches that Seoul says North Korea conducted earlier this week.

Pyongyang’s state media said that the launches examined “the operational features of the detonating devices of nuclear warheads mounted on the ballistic rockets.”

Analysts say North Korea likely fired missiles carrying warheads, designed to trigger a possible nuclear device, to see if those warheads detonate properly.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in March ordered the tests of a nuclear warhead explosion and ballistic missiles with such warheads.

Pyongyang said it conducted a similar test of a warhead-detonating device when it fired a submarine-launched missile in April.

Matt Damon may have earned $1 million per line of dialogue in the upcoming Jason Bourne film, it has been revealed.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Damon revealed he only has around 25 lines of dialogue in the new Bourne instalment, due out next week. Based on his previous pay rates, that means each line could’ve earned a cool $1 million .However, the film’s director Paul Greengrass says it’s all about the “emotionality” Damon puts into the character. “When I think of a Bourne movie, unlike the other franchises alongside it in the summer, it feels to me it has to have that combination. I want to think we show the competition a clean pair of heels. I think our action is inventive, cooler.”

Jackson, Kruger separate Hollywood golden couple Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson have called time on their 10 year relationship. According to Us Weekly, reps for the pair confirmed the couple had split earlier this week.

“Diane Kruger and Josh Jackson have decided to separate and remain friends,” reps confirmed. The Troy star had recently relocated permanently to New York to be closer to Jackson.

The duo, who had been together for a decade had previously spoke candidly about their decision not to marry with media. In 2014, the Dawson’s Creek star said the pair decided against marriage because they were not religious. Kruger was previously married to French actor Guillaume Canet from 2001 to 2006.

Pokemon GO direct to jail Police in New Hampshire’s largest city have gotten the Pokemon GO bug, trying to lure fugitives with the popular app. A post on the Manchester Police Department Facebook page announces that police recently detected one of the more rare Pokemon characters — a Charizard — in the booking area. The post invites those whose names appear on a list linked to the post to be “one of the lucky ones” to come capture the Charizard. The list includes the names of the more than 500 fugitives on the department’s wanted persons roundup.

Sgt. Eric Knight said Sunday the post has yet to net an arrest. But it’s been popular with its Facebook followers.

Since the post went up late Saturday night, it’s captured more than 13,000 likes.

Tougher times for property investors Sue Newman

f you plan on making your fortune in property investment, you might need to be quick, very, very quick.

House prices rocketing out of reach of many first homebuyers has prompted a national think tank – on many levels – on ways to put home buying within reach of more Kiwis.

We’ve had plans to build more homes and cheaper homes, plans to encourage local authorities to become bankers for sub-dividers in an effort to keep section costs down and we’ve now got another take on the loan-to-value rules that made it very tough for young people to enter the housing market.

This time, the Reserve Bank is also targeting investors too, the main competitors in the first home market.

Traditionally real estate investors have borrowed against one property to fund their purchase of the next, but the new scheme will change all of that. From September 1 banks will be limited to no more than 5 per cent of their investor loans to borrowers with less than a 40 per cent deposit.

That means an investor looking at an Ashburton house priced at $300,000 would need $120,000 cash.

For the mum and dad investor, those new loan limits could certainly change the way they think about adding property to their investment portfolio. Add to that the ongoing changes in landlord requirements around heating and insulation and owning an investment property starts to lose its allure.

It’s quite clear, property investment is a business and if the dollars don’t add up then the investors are not going to buy and that will do absolutely nothing to put a roof over the head of young families looking for rentals.

While the Reserve Bank has signalled September 1 as the start of the new limits, at least one bank has already signalled it won’t be taking on any new investor loan applications beyond the 60 per cent lending limit.

There’s little doubt investors have helped drive up house prices, but add to the new investor limits the reinstatement of the 20 per cent deposit requirement for homebuyers and the housing market’s new buzz words might be stagnate and rental shortage.

BY FIONA ROTHERHAM The government is investing $35 million over four years into a new initiative, Entrepreneurial Universities, to attract world-leading entrepreneurial researchers and their teams to New Zealand to further strength the country’s universities and innovation ecosystem.

The programme, initiated by the University of Auckland, is open to all eight of New Zealand’s universities who can enter into a 50:50 partnership to attract and support named researchers and their teams to work in the university for an initial period of three to five years.

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce said it was an “unashamedly elite fund” designed to bring the top academics, their teams, and labs to New Zealand.

Those being recruited will need an established record in innovation and entrepreneurship in the top maker disciplines such as computer sciences, nano-technology, and biotech, to help grow a pipeline of innovative start-up companies, commercialise their intellectual property, and help train the next generation of scientific entrepreneurs, Joyce said.

It’s expected up to 15 to 20 researchers and their teams will come to New Zealand over a

three-year period. The fund has been modelled on similar programmes around the world, including the US and UK and works out at roughly $1 million per team per year.

When asked why the researchers would come to New Zealand over other countries with similar programmes, Joyce said the nation accounts for “something around half a per cent of the world’s total science budget so we have to do some innovative thinking that will attract these entrepreneurial researchers to this part of the world”.

He said the University of Auckland’s draft list includes a number of successful Kiwis, many of whom have done their degrees in New Zealand and then made their careers outside of the country, that may want to come home, along with other researchers that have some kind of linkage to the country that for various reasons want to come here. “We don’t have to get many to make a significant difference,” he said.

New Zealand universities also have a good reputation for excellence with all eight ranked in the top three percent in the world, Joyce said.

Tertiary Education Commission chief executive Tim Fowler said it was about universities identifying which overseas-based researchers are “going to be the

next rock star” and getting them here while they’re still growing their research base.

Auckland University vicechancellor Professor Stuart McCutcheon said the idea for the initiative stemmed from the university realising New Zealand has lost something like 30,000 jobs in agriculture and around 80,000 in manufacturing over the past 20 years and that it was new companies that create new jobs.

New Zealand universities already had a number of what McCutcheon calls “accidental entrepreneurs” - academics who it was “in their blood” to commercialise their research and set up spin-out companies but there wasn’t enough of them to build sufficient deal flow. The US experience was that those types of highly-engaged academics also have a profound effect on students who then can go into the private sector to create new companies and increase the size of the overall innovation eco-system, he said.

Government funding for the programme is part of the Budget 2016 Innovative New Zealand package that included an extra $410 million in funding for science researchers already based in New Zealand. The new initiative is expected to be on-going once the announced funding ends.

Xero will start offering new services as it seeks to transform the platform founded on accounting software into the online portal of choice for small businesses.

Chief executive Rod Drury told shareholders at the annual meeting in Sydney the softwareas-a-service firm is in the process of migrating its core platform to Amazon Web Services, reducing costs and paving the way for the company to expand its product range into front office services.

Xero wants to become the major portal for the way small businesses access web services, building a “financial web” where it becomes a key cog.

“Now we’re getting near the end of the beginning where we’ve built that horizontal global accounting engine, we can now do a whole lot of things that can dramatically drive revenue over time,” Drury said. “Over the next couple of years, you’ll see us moving from just one piece of fixed-price software for the small business (to where) for another few dollars per month per employee here’s another

few services.”

The Wellington-based company is now processing $1 trillion of transactions, and speaking after the annual meeting Drury said that has made the firm important to large enterprise and government who need Xero to interact with small business.

Because Xero has already built up a strong enough subscriber base and developed an existing platform, the cost of adding new services is cheaper, he said.

Xero affirmed its previous guidance that it has enough cash in the bank to start breaking even without raising more capital, and Drury today said the company will pass 1 million customers this year on its path to becoming a $1 billion revenue company. The company had 717,000 customers as at March 31 with annualised monthly committed revenue of $258 million for its cloud-based accounting software.

Drury said New Zealand, Australia, and the UK remain Xero’s “cash cows”, and while progress in building the US will take time, the company is also looking at new markets in Singapore and South Africa.

Dairy product prices were mixed at the Global Dairy Trade auction, as a gain in whole milk powder offset a decline for most other products.

The GDT price index slipped to US$2336 (NZ$3312), down from US$2345 (NZ$3324) at the previous auction two weeks ago. The index was unchanged in percentage terms. Some 31,348 tonnes of product was sold, down from 32,500 tonnes at the previous auction two weeks ago.

Whole milk powder rose 1.9 per cent to US$2079 (NZ$2947) a tonne.

Some support came from the European Union’s latest financial support package for the region’s struggling farmers, announced on Monday.

“The additional aid granted by the EU will help to slow growth in milk production-a trend that has already started to occur, while the intervention program will help soak up any extra skim milk powder that is produced,” AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby said in

a note.

“This will be beneficial to the market in the short-term as it will allow global supply and demand to rebalance more quickly, but continuing to support inefficient farms means we are likely to be faced with over supply situations again in the future,” according to Kilsby.

The AgriHQ Snapshot milk price slipped 1 cent to $3.71 per kilogram milksolids, while the AgriHQ 2016-17 milk price fell 6 cents to $4.48/kgMS as dairy commodity futures prices have generally eased in the past fortnight, Kilsby noted.

At the GDT auction, anhydrous milk fat inched 0.2 per cent higher to US$3628 (NZ$5140) a tonne, while rennet casein added 0.4 per cent to US$5286 (NZ$7490) a tonne.

Butter milk powder slipped 0.5 per cent to US$1565 (NZ$2217) a tonne, while skim milk powder fell 1.1 per cent to US$1927 (NZ$2730) a tonne,

Quarterly tractor sales buoyant

While the dairy downturn has impacted on farmer spending tractor and machinery sales remain relatively buoyant in Mid Canterbury.

Mark Etheridge of Drummond & Etheridge Machinery said Mid Canterbury’s agricultural diversity was keeping the boat afloat for many farm equipment retailers.

“Seasonally we are seeing fewer sales of dairy-based machinery but there’s more to farming in Mid Canterbury than just dairying. Obviously dairy is back but other areas are going quite well,” he said.

“Arable farmers and small seed growers are holding up, beef has been good along with deer velvet, is achieving good prices.

“There’s a lot of good, positive stuff happening out there, we see those trends in our business.

“We had the dairy boom and a lot of other areas were suffering, now it’s their turn – that’s the nature of farming.

“At this stage the sales have held up reasonably well, we’ve got a good forward order bank and the market is reasonably positive.”

The most recent figures released by the Tractor and Machinery Association of New Zealand (TAMA) showed tractor and farm machinery sales had dropped 34 per cent across Canterbury for the six month period ending June 30.

The second quarter results of tractor sales showed tractor sales had declined by 8.5 per cent, compared to the same quarter last year.

Several segments saw an increase, however, including the consumer segment which grew by 15 per cent, as more people purchased smaller 20–60 horsepower compact tractors for lifestyle blocks, hire fleets and some commercial applications.

While sales of larger horsepower tractors have declined over the past year there has been an increase in sales of smaller horsepower tractors similar to the one pictured.

However, the 121–140hp, 141– 180hp and 181–250hp segments grew by 39 per cent, 116 per cent and 125 per cent respectively.

These tractors are predominantly used in arable and dry stock farming operations and also by contractors.

Tractor sales in Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wairarapa and Nelson also grew on the back of strong growth in the horticul-

ture and viticulture industries.

“Dairy farmers are still buying.

Our members have noticed they’re taking longer to make decisions, and often choosing a machine with a lower level of specification. In some cases, cabs are considered a luxury and have been removed from the shopping list,” TAMA president Mark HamiltonManns said.

“There’s no doubt dairy farmers are still prepared to purchase if there is a strong return on investment. Often replacing a tractor or machine will reduce annual ex-

penditure as repairs and maintenance costs are generally less on a new machine and often covered by warranty. Newer tractors are also more fuel efficient as technology keeps improving.”

“The consumer market is also very competitive right now and there’s some great deals to be had. Consumers are generally less experienced buying machinery, however, and often underestimate the importance of the availability of parts, service and warranty support. A great deal upfront may become very expensive later on. Our

advice is to buy from a recognised New Zealand dealer as you can be assured of access to parts and great service later.”

With the tightening dairy market, Mr Hamilton-Manns said tractor manufacturers and retailers were investing in training, aftermarket support and parts supply to ensure customers’ machines kept operating.

“Moreover, our manufacturers are investing in R&D to meet offroad emissions regulations, integrate technology into machines and reduce operating costs.”

Creating awareness over velevetleaf

A velvetleaf awareness meeting will be held at the Tinwald War Memorial Hall this morning.

Staged by the Ministry of Primary Industries in conjunction with regional councils and farming industry groups, the meeting is one of a number happening around the country over this month and August.

The object is to create awareness of the noxious weed and offer growers support in dealing with the incursion.

Contaminated seed has been sown on more than 250 properties from Southland to Waikato, and has been linked to imported beet seeds.

MPI and regional councils throughout the country launched an urgent response to the weed in March.

Velvetleaf is classified as an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act and as such the onus is on property owners to prevent its spread.

A grower support meeting aimed at farmers who have already identified velvetleaf on their property will follow this morning’s meeting.

The awareness meeting will start at 10am and run until 12 noon.

Heavy shorn lambs made $118-$124, medium weights $110-$115 and lighter lambs, $84-$95.

itsubishi’s new Pajero Sport VRX has attitude with altitude!

There’s now an SUV to suit just about any lifestyle or need.

For many of these their greatest off-road experience may be carpark judder bars.

But of course some people want much more, like towing heavy stuff, and having the ability to seriously venture off-road, yet then just as easily be able to slot into both everyday commutes and being able to cruise comfortably, and quietly for long distances.

Which is just what the VRX version Pajero Sport is set up to do.

It replaces the Challenger, and despite its name, is based on the Triton ute, not the now-elderly Pajero.

So while it shares the Triton’s full chassis, (but with coil springs and roll bars in place of the rear leaf set-up), the same turbodiesel engine and is loaded with off-road technology, it’s subtly different.

For a start, there’s those definitely interesting and extremely

smart exterior looks.

Front on there’s a clear family relationship with the grille and lots of chrome.

There’s integrated side steps and the side windows sweep upwards as they progress towards the stylish rear, with its slightly ornate tail-lights.

Below these the tow-bar looks a bit out of place, but its clearly designed for hard use rather than form, for the Sport will tow a braked 3100kg.

It’s shorter than the Triton, so easier to park – especially with the help of the rear and surround-view cameras, plus sensors.

The 2.4 litre turbo-diesel produces the same135kW and 437Nm of torque as for the Triton, but in the Sport this is mated up to an excellent 8-speed auto.

This auto is a class act, for it shifts very quickly and smoothly through its well-chosen ratios.

The result is that any turbo lag existing below 1500rpm is hardly ever noticed, diesel sounds are minimalised and the

performance, in all situations, as driven, excellent.

Around town it’s a very civilised, easy drive, then very quiet at cruise and powers effortlessly up steep climbs (no need to use the paddles).

From standstill the Sport hits 100km/h in 11 seconds while the claimed overall fuel use is 8L/100k, which is pretty much what we saw during our 700k of varied driving.

The cabin, especially the pleated leather, heated and power adjustable front seats proved to be a very pleasant and comfortable place to be.

You do of course sit higher because of the ladder chassis, so the view out, including over the bonnet is very good.

The back seats also were said to be very comfortable, especially for two.

While their seats don’t have internal heating, they quickly fold and tumble to extend the load space.

The dash and large 7-inch touch-screen are well presented and straightforward to use.

Standard gear includes active cruise, an excellent 8-speaker sound system, dual zone climate air, blind spot warning, forward collision mitigation and more.

There’s Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

This, which uses your phone to access sat-nav is becoming more common.

Personally I prefer an “in house” sat-nav system.

Luggage space is 673 litres, increasing to 1624 litres with the seats tumbled.

Below sits a full-size spare.

The suspension is set to, and delivers a cushioned ride, both on and off road, with only sharpedged, deep bumps and holes being noticed.

When pushed through corners there’s some predictable but wellcontrolled body movement and a nice sure-footed feel about the handling.

Meantime the steering, while not offering a lot of feel, is userfriendly in all situations.

For serious expeditions off the beaten track the Sport has all the right credentials.

In addition to the grunty engine/gearbox combo there’s the Super-Select 4WD system with its range of modes (gravel, mud, snow etc), a centre diff and low range.

There’s also hill descent control and other driver assistance stuff as well.

Ground clearance is 218mm, approach and departure angles 30 and 24 degrees respectively and the wading depth 700mm.

FINALE This very well priced Pajero Sport VRX is an impressive package through its combination of space, on-road comfort and performance, and definite off-road capability.

As well seven-seat options have just become available for an additional $3000.

Cold weather did not deter a good turn-out of members to our July meeting which included one visitor.

The recent passing of John Gray was observed with a minutes silence. Don Hopwood reported on a planned afternoon bus trip for July 28 visiting Nigel Reith’s Rakaia farm and various other places of interest in Mid-Canterbury.

Seats are still available from Don. Our minispeaker was Chris Harrison, Manager of the Ashburton Hospital Diabetes Clinic. She described the causes and symptoms of Diabetes and ways to control it, including a balanced low sugar diet and plenty of exercise.

Gary Fail was our main speaker. Educated at Christchurch East, Linwood and Christs College, Gary studied law at the Canterbury University old site in the 1960’s. In 1970 he worked under Russell and Moon in Ashburton and became a partner in 1973. He described how work practices have evolved over the years during which he worked mainly in the facilitation of commercial transactions. Today he specialises in family law. He emphasised the importance of regularly keeping our affairs in order and covered the appointment of executors and Will making. He was thanked

by Robert Spencer and the meeting was then closed.

Coronation Target Shooting Club The highlight this week must be the strong performances being returned by the club juniors Lanelle McArthur 99.5, Savanna McArthur 99.3, Emma Smith 97.4, Morgan Smith 93.1, Logan McArthur 93.3, Shanaia Harrison-Lee 89.1, Lindsay Mathieson and Jarrod Ward, add to this impressive list Megan Snowden who didn’t shoot this week but 96.4 the previous week, Jayden Collette also missing this week but sitting on 94.4. What a wealth of talent.

Add to this Phillippa Fleming of Mayfield and no doubt some other juniors from country clubs that I don’t know about. The Executive and selector must be positively salivating at the team available for the Andrews and Faulkner Junior team.

In the senior ranks Steve McArthur 99.7, Mark Stewart 98.4 and Murray Cook continuing to improve 98.4 were the only ones to stand out. Of the Tuesday night shooters Michaela Smith, Andrew McKenzie and Kevin Hooper have stayed solid in the mid 90’s. Andrew definitely needing to up his game with a daughter snapping at his heels.

As in all sports there are people who support and complete the non-competitive side of things and it is pleasing to note that our club President, Dean Smith has been appointed convenor and head marker for the forthcoming North v South Island match in August.

Grey Power Ashburton Inc. On Monday July 18 President Peter Thomas welcomed 50 plus members to the Monthly General Meeting at the Seniors Centre. Apologies were accepted from Carol Price, moved

Peter advised members to be aware that time was drawing near to apply for the rates rebate if they are eligible. He then introduced our speaker for the afternoon, Helen Wilson Field Officer for BUPA. (British United Provident Association) BUPA is a leading global health & care organisation that runs care homes, retirement villages, rehabilitation services, and supplies medical alarms and other services for people with failing health and dementia. Helen demonstrated how the alarm system worked and advised that more often than not funding for alarms can be obtained through a grant from WINZ if approved by the doctor. Two lucky draws were made for lock boxes (a box to store a house key for emergency entry by St John’s or other services.) Greer proposed a vote of thanks and presented Helen with a fruit tray.

The raffle was drawn and prizes distributed.

Peter and Bernard entertained while afternoon tea was served.

The next meeting will be on Monday August 15, where the speaker will be Elaine McLardy

from Advanced Care Planning.

Lions Club of Hinds & Districts Good attendance at Tuesdays Tea Meeting to hear guest speaker Kevin Johnston from Geraldine, a founding member of Hayden Paddon’s Supporters Group talk about his trip to witness Hayden win the 2016 Rally of Argentina. With photos, pace notes and plenty of good stories, Kevin kept everyone interested.

Lion Alan Harrison was presented with a Membership and Centennial Award Pin to recognise his achievements as Membership Director and Lion Mervyn Gray spoke about the Chess Group he runs at Longbeach School and showed the chess sets and timing clocks he purchased with funds the club had donated. Everyone then enjoyed a welcome hot meal provided by Hinds Women’s Institute ladies. In general business Treasurer Lion John Shearer presented four motions relating to subscriptions, meal prices, caterer payments and raffles for this new Lions Year.

After healthy discussion all were adopted unanimously. Lion Kevin Jackson showed his partially built Thomas the Tank Engine he is constructing for the Santa Parade and other events. Lion Tamer John Low then kept everyone nervous as he extracted money for some dubious fines before President Alan Johnston thanked the guest speaker, visitors and members for another enjoyable Hinds Lions evening.

The Ashburton Herb Group meet on the first Wednesday of each month. At the April meeting members had a Back to Basics Day, where our members contributed many home grown herbs to sell at a Back to Basics Stall held at Tinwald New Life Church on April 2.

Information was given out about herbs, and useful books, on display to peruse. In all a very successful day created a lot of interest from the public.

At our May meeting, member Christine gave a very interesting talk and video on her recent trip to Norfolk Island, on which herbs grown there and their uses. This was followed by afternoon tea, where again members often provide something new they have made using home grown herbs. Our June meeting was followed by a video called “Juliet of the Herbs”. Juliet has had over 60 years living and learning the healing arts of herbs from the Gypsies, Nomads and Peasants of the world, who live close to nature.

This was filmed on location in Greece, Spain, France, Portugal, Switzerland, England and America and was a very inspiring portrait of a very remarkable woman.

July was our AGM meeting, followed by our usual bring your own homemade soup and bread to share, after which, members talked about what they had been doing with herbs during the last 2-3 months with a show and tell session, followed by afternoon tea. Sonia Waddell’s side fell to a 40-20 loss to a strong Hamilton B side on Monday. Shooters Hannah Kirwan and Maddie Reed were the stand-outs for Mid Canterbury with 87 per cent and 72 per cent respective success rates from under the hoop. Two losses followed on Tuesday against Kapi-Mana (34-23) and Southland (41-23). The tournament concludes today.

Ashburton bowlers reclaim Paterson Trophy

A fine all-round performance saw Ashburton’s indoor bowlers reclaim the Paterson Trophy in Christchurch on Sunday.

The local contingent bucked this year’s trend as the only new winners after seeing off reigning zone five champions Canterbury.

The competition’s teams are made up of the top eight bowl-

ers from each association in zone five, which consists of Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Golden Bay-Motueka and Ashburton.

The format of the event saw five rounds played of fours, pairs and singles matches between the competing centres.

Ashburton made a fine start on Friday evening, finishing tied at the top with Nelson on 28 points after round one.

Starting fresh on Saturday, Ashburton pushed into the lead and never looked back.

By the end of the day’s play, Ashburton found themselves ahead of their rivals by a respectable 22 points.

With one round remaining on Sunday, it became a mere formality to see out the win and reclaim the coveted trophy.

Final standings put Ashburton on 133 points, followed by

Nelson in second place on 109.5 points, Canterbury (107 points), Marlborough (71.5 points), West Coast (59.5 points) and Golden Bay-Motueka (56.5 points).

Ashburton have now progressed to the national final, which brings together the six zone winners from around the country to contest the prestigious Welch Trophy at the Canterbury Association Stadium in September.

169.1km/h pitch fastest ever recorded The 105.1 mph (169.1 km/h) pitch from Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman to Baltimore’s J.J. Hardy matched the fastest since Major League Baseball began tracking speeds in 2008.

Chapman also threw a 105.1m/h fastball for Cincinnati against San Diego on September 24, 2010, MLB said yesterday (NZ time).

During Tuesday’s game, Chapman’s fastest heater was taken for a ball by Hardy.

The New York lefty threw five pitches that ranged from 104.0 (167.4km/h) to 105.1m/h.

He has thrown a big leaguehigh 217 pitches of 100m/h

(160.9km/h) or more, and 46.1 per cent of his 471 pitches have reached 100m/h.

Every time he throws a pitch, I look up to see how hard it was,” catcher Brian McCann said after Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Baltimore. “It’s incredible what he can do.”

McCann has plenty of experience catching hard-throwing relievers – he saw triple digits plenty when he and closer Craig Kimbrel were with the Atlanta Braves.

Smiles rather than scowls were the prevailing feature as Joseph Parker and Solomon Haumono weighed in for tonight’s bout in Christchurch.

Rather than the pre-fighting posturing that accompanies many boxing promotions, there was a clear mutual respect between the pair ahead of their clash at Horncastle Arena. Parker, who weighed in at 106.4 kilograms and ceded a 2.6kg advantage to his opponent, had to stifle laughter after the pair had hugged and were asked to stare down. The Kiwi eventually acquired his game face but there was certainly nothing approaching antagonism ahead of the trans-Tasman battle. – NZME

Who will benefit?

The reason the Chiefs will begin the playoffs in Cape Town is clear: an unbalanced system that rewarded the Stormers for repeatedly playing inferior opposition. What is far less certain ahead of Sunday morning’s quarter-final is which side will benefit from the disparity in their respective schedules. Will the Chiefs – battle-hardened after coming agonisingly close to winning the Kiwi conference – be able to utilise those highintensity repetitions in a knockout environment? Or will the Stormers be well-rested and make the most of their home advantage? One thing is for sure, Super Rugby’s much-maligned format means the teams will line up at opposite ends of Newlands having taken incredibly diverse routes to the post-season.

Racism probe Twelve weeks after racism complaints were laid with the West Coast Rugby Union, New Zealand rugby officials will be on the Coast to investigate ahead of Saturday’s club rugby final. Racist remarks were allegedly made during a senior match between Kiwi and South Westland on April 30. The South Westland Club claimed there was racial abuse from members of the Kiwi club directed at Pacific Island players in the southern team. In protest at what they claimed was a lack of attention from the West Coast union, South Westland boycotted its next two games against the Hokitika club.

Yesterday, the West Coast Rugby Union made an about-turn and announced it was now intending to consider the complaint. – NZME

IOC explores Russian ban

By Stephen Wilson With just over two weeks until the opening ceremony, Russia still doesn’t know whether its athletes – all or even some – will be competing in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It may all come down to the lawyers.

While the IOC decided earlier to ban from the Rio Games all Russian Sports Ministry officials and other administrators implicated in allegations of a state-run doping programme, it delayed a ruling on whether to take the unprecedented step of barring the entire Russian Olympic team.

The International Olympic Committee said it “will explore the legal options with regard to a collective ban of all Russian athletes for the Olympic Games 2016 versus the rights to individual justice”.

The IOC has also said it could let individual international sports federations decide on whether to ban Russians from their events in Rio, just as the IAAF has done by ruling track and field athletes from the games. The 28 international federations that govern the individual sports at the summer games have made clear that they do not support a blanket ban, The IOC’s legal options may become clearer after today, when the highest court in sports will rule on an appeal by 68 Russian track and field athletes seeking to overturn their ban from the games.

PHOTO AP champion Yelena Isinbayeva was among those arguing the Rusyesterday in Geneva at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Should the court rule later today in their favour, it would seemingly rule out the chance of the IOC imposing a blanket ban.

If the court upholds the IAAF’s exclusion of the track athletes, however, that would keep the possibility of a total ban in play.

Further appeals are also possible,

meaning that the final word on the Russians may go down to the wire before August 5, when the Rio games open.

Still, it will take a major leap for the IOC to impose the ultimate sanction of kicking out Russia entirely. IOC president Thomas Bach has repeatedly called for a balance between “individual justice and collective punishment”.

No country as a whole has ever been barred from the games for

doping and Russia is a major force in the Olympic movement as well as a sports powerhouse.

The last time Russia was missing from the Olympics was when it boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Games in retaliation for the US boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the doping allegations “a dangerous return to ... letting

politics interfere with sport”.

“The Olympic movement, which is a tremendous force for uniting humanity, once again could find itself on the brink of division,” he said in a statement after the release of the report into Russian doping issued by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren.

The 15-member IOC executive board met by teleconference to consider its moves following McLaren’s report.

The report, commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, accused the Russian Sports Ministry, headed by Vitaly Mutko, of overseeing the doping of the country’s Olympic athletes on a scale larger than previous alleged.

It said the ministry had help from Russia’s intelligence service, the FSB. The investigation uncovered an alleged doping programme that ensnared 28 sports, both summer and winter, and ran from 2011 to 2015. It found 312 positive tests that Russia’s deputy minister of sport directed lab workers not to report to WADA. Mutko has denied all wrongdoing and said he expected his subordinates to be cleared.

But addressing the ban by the IOC of Russian sports administrators, he said he was ready to accept it because “we have always been guests at the Olympics” , and that the important issue was that the Russian Olympic team go to the games.

Ticket prices may drop for non-Brazilian buyers

Sports fans living outside Brazil who bought tickets for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics early may be regretting it, having paid higher prices and add-on fees.

In a late push to boost slow ticket sales ahead of the Aug. 5-21 games, Rio organisers have opened up their local ticket website to the rest of the world. This means that fans outside Brazil can now buy tickets at local rates in Brazilian reals.

The result is ticket prices that could be much lower due to fluctuations in exchange rates between the real and other currencies, and the absence of so-called service fees charged by official ticket resellers outside Brazil.

“This is a great deal for someone coming to Brazil,” Rio ticket director Donovan Ferreti told The Associated Press yesterday. “Now the exchange rate is in their favour.”

Americans, in particular, could regret having bought early.

Rio organisers reached an agreement more than a year ago with official ticket resellers outside Brazil – those who wanted to price in dollars – to use the exchange rate of 2.35 reals to the dollar. The rate is now about 3.25.

This means that a ticket priced at 500 reals, purchased from the American reseller CoSport, would cost about $215. In addition, authorised resellers are also allowed to collect up to a 20 per cent service charge on ticket sales.

However, an American buyer can now go to the Brazilian website and click on a ticket priced at 500 reals. At the current exchange rate, that price is about $150 and there is no service fee.

“You can see the price in reals, no extra fees, and you can buy directly on our website,” Ferreti said.

He said the website has been open to all since June 1.

Rio organisers are about to put 100,000 new tickets on sale. Ferreti said this was likely to be the last batch.

“We have tickets for all sports, so it’s a grand chance for people around the world to buy their tickets,” Ferreti said.

He said Rio has sold 4.4 million of the 6.1 million tickets available, or 72 per cent. He said of the 4.4 million sold, 1.1 million have been bought by non-Brazilians. He said the largest five foreign buyers in order were: Americans, French, Argentines, Germans and Japanese.

He said he was not allowed to give specific numbers because of an agreement with the authorised ticket sellers.

Ferreti said ticket sales “are increasing each day” and he said Rio expects to meet its budget estimate of raising 1.045 billion reals ($320 million) through ticket sales.

“We are selling many more tickets now that we are getting closer to the games,” Ferreti said. He expects most venues to be full, or nearly full, and highlighted that Brazilians typically are late buyers.

He said that Rio organisers had no plans to give away free tickets, even if some venues are not full.

“No free tickets,” he said.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes promised after the 2014 World Cup to give away 1.2 million Olympic tickets to students and the poor.

In the end, the city bought about 47,000 Olympic tickets – 4 per cent of his promise.

Carlos Nuzman, head of the Rio organising committee, hinted in a speech at the weekend that smaller crowds could be acceptable.

“I don’t think we need too much public,” he said, adding that smaller venues could save money by having fewer spectators. – AP

All dog owners must register or re-register their pets and working dogs by this time. Dog registration forms have been posted out to all dog owners, but, if you have not received yours you can still register your dog online or at the Ashburton District Council reception.

Dog registration renewals that are unpaid at 3 August will incur a 50% penalty fee.

Late registrations create additional administrative costs in reminders and postage, as well as staff time. Sport Lesnar also failed The UFC says heavyweight Brock Lesnar (above kneeling) failed a second doping test in a sample taken on the night of his victory over Mark Hunt (above) at UFC 200. The US Anti-Doping Agency notified Lesnar last week about his first potential violation of the UFC’s policy from an out-of-competition test last month.

The UFC says Lesnar tested positive for the same unnamed substance in both tests. The 39-year-old Lesnar declined to comment yesterday on the UFC’s disclosure of his second positive test. Lesnar beat Hunt by decision on July 9, handily winning his first MMA fight in 4 1/2 years.

Isla Russell added three more medals to her growing haul with a string of fine performances at the National Karate Championships at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua, Wellington.

After taking out two gold medals and a bronze at the Canterbury Westland Karate Championships in Christchurch last month, the 11-year-old’s superb form continued in the capital.

Premier Female Kumite champion and also collected a silver medal in the 10 to 13-year team Kumite section and a bronze medal in 10 to 11-year Kata category.

The Ashburton Borough student said she enjoyed her time in Wellington and was pleased that her hard work paid off.

“It was so much fun, but the best part was getting called national champion of the year,” she said.

skills throughout. “There was a lot of strong competition. I got to spend time with national competitors and coaches over the four days and there was a national training camp – they push you really hard, it was two very long, but good, days.”

Russell will now turn her attention to the Oceania Karate Championships in New Caledonia in September and hopes the steady flow of gold medals continues. “I really want to get a gold medal in New Caledonia because I have got a gold medal at every competition this year,” she said.

Woods out of PGA Tiger Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship, the first time he will go an entire year without playing a major. The decision, while not a surprise, also means he will go an entire PGA Tour season without playing. His agent, Mark Steinberg of Excel Sports Management, said in a text to The Associated Press yesterday that Woods will not play the remainder of the tour season as he continues to rehab following back surgeries. That would have amounted to only three more tournaments before the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Steinberg said Woods will continue to work hard and assess when he can play the following season, which starts in October. In public appearances dating to April, whether it was opening his golf course in Houston or hosting his tournament in Washington, Woods has given no indication when he will be ready to compete.
