Snow? Local beef on SKYCITY menu No – it’s summer, isn’t it?

SKYCITY restaurant, The Grill by Sean Connolly, has been thrilled at the response to including 130-day grain-fed sirloin, finished on Ashburton’s Five Star beef feedlot, on its menu. The product, which retails at $55 for 400g, is gaining rave reviews and is currently the restaurant’s most popular item. The Grill by Sean Connolly operations manager Anna Haines said it was a firm favourite with customers. “It has the perfect balance between texture and flavour,” she said. “You can taste the result of farming with grain and grass, cooked by chefs who are passionate about topquality beef, this steak truly tastes as good as it looks.” Neat Meat managing director Simon Eriksen, who sources and supplies the steak to SKYCITY, said it was a challenge securing it, as it is produced largely for the premium Japanese market. “The Grill is always looking to change their menu and use products that others may struggle to find and (products of) excellent quality,” he said. “In this case, the sirloin, which has the perfect bal-
ance between taste and tenderness, is created through superior genetics, a grass diet for most of their life, then premium grains grown in New Zealand. “It’s popular at The Grill because they sell it and it is good. It’s not popular elsewhere, because it’s hard to get.” The mainly Angus beef is finished on the Ashburton feedlot for 130-150 days. Wakanui comes off the same feedlot, but the difference is the beef is finished on grain for 70-90 days. Chef Sean Connolly told the Ashburton Guardian it was rare to find 130-150 day grain-fed beef in New Zealand, especially when New Zealand is so famous for pasture-fed cattle. Just last week, the product was highlighted in a restaurant review of The Grill by Sean Connolly, published in the NZ Herald’s Canvas Magazine reviewer Kim Knight said: “imagine the very best Burger King patty you’ve ever eaten – tangy, charred and juicy – and then imagine that delicious and distinctive flavour served as a steak. Strange, but true”.

Oak Grove roundabout closed next week If the Oak Grove roundabout is part of your normal route to work, next week you’ll need to change your plans. From Tuesday the northern section of Oak Grove will be closed while sewer main renewal work is carried out. “The work on Oak Grove is part of council’s ongoing pro-
gramme to renew Ashburton’s sewer mains. The mains being replaced have reached the end of their serviceable life and have to be replaced to ensure the correct functioning of the network,” Ashburton District Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said.
The north-bound lane of Oak Grove from Elizabeth Street to the Harrison Street roundabout will be closed for maintenance, and a detour will be in place. Residents along Oak Grove affected by the works will be able to access their properties throughout the three-day maintenance, and traffic will
be diverted via Elizabeth Street, Cross Street and Harrison Street. The closure will be in place from Tuesday until Thursday. “Council greatly appreciates the community’s understanding and co-operation during this time, and we hope this work doesn’t cause too much disruption for anyone,” Guthrie said.
If you thought winter had arrived early in the Ashburton District when you woke up yesterday – it had. A dusting of snow on Mt Hutt and a chilly southerly wind meant temperatures plummeted to just 3.2°C at 6.40am on Friday morning. And it didn’t get much better as the district struggled to hit the day’s predicted high of 15 degrees. The summer chill arrived on the back of a day of rain and high winds on Thursday. Wind gusts hit 75.9 kilometres an hour and the average wind speed for the 24 hours period was 54.6 kilometres an hour, according to Ashburton’s Graham’s Weather Station. The days’ recordings, however fell well short of reaching the wind speed record (since 2006) of gusts topping 94 kilometres an hour on January 1, 2013. And that is well below the 1975 windstorm where gusts of 153 kilometres an hour were recorded. Snow is not unusual at Mt Hutt in summer, with southerly winds often bringing some snowflakes every couple of months. Early January in 2014 saw about seven centimetres fall on the mountain. Rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday saw the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers running high with flows peaking at river mouths on Thursday night. River levels decreased throughout the day yesterday. The summer chill is set to linger over the weekend with rain forecast for Saturday night and Sunday. Temperatures are unlikely to climb out of the low to mid teens until Tuesday.

Residents in Mid Canterbury’s rural villages are being offered the opportunity to hook into Ashburton’s new wheelie bin, kerbside rubbish collection. The Ashburton District Council is about to start a round of consultation with residents of Lake Hood, Fairton, Chertsey, Rakaia, Methven, Mayfield and Hinds as well as people living in the Winslow area and on lifestyle blocks around Ashburton and Rakaia to gauge interest. Wheelie bins were given the thumbs up by Ashburton residents in 2015 and the council is now committed to introducing the new service in July. A tender for the wheelie bin contract has now been awarded to its current contractor, Envirowaste Services Ltd. Within that tender there is the opportunity to extend the service to include rural villages, said council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin. Apart from Fairtion, where residents elected not to have a kerbside collection and Lake Hood where residents employ their own contractor, the district’s rural villages have the same black bag kerbside collection as Ashburton. With Ashburton signing
on for wheelie bins, that had prompted a number of inquiries from the village residents requesting the same service, Goodwin said. The council had looked at the new service and identified that extending it to the villages would be a positive economic move, he said. “We can offer exactly the same service as the people in town will get; it’s not an additional cost to bring in the rural villages.” If rural residents wanted to be part of the new service, the council planned to roll out wheelie bins across the district at the same time “But for this to work, we need everyone in – or out – but we really hope everyone will buy into this. There are a lot of environmental benefits, it’s good for waste minimisation and we should see a 20 to 30 per cent rise in kerbside recycling,” Goodwin said. By bringing the lifestyle blocks around towns into the collection it could see a reduction in the “bury or burn” approach to dealing with waste, he said. Letters outlining the proposal will go out to all rural village residents from Monday to kickstart the consultation process.

Creating a variety of works such as candle holders and tigers, they chiselled and sanded their way to a finished product. The week-long programme will finish with a bike ride to Hakatere after a night staying over at the Mania-o-roto scout park.

Council urges caution on water usage Ashburton District Council is urging the community to remain vigilant with water use, even though the region has been hit by rainfall during the holiday period. Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said the unseasonably wet conditions should not be a cause for complacency, and that SMART Watering practices
are as important as ever. “We often feel a sense of security about water when we see lots of rainfall, but consecutive seasons of dry weather has taken a toll on Mid Canterbury, and we should be doing what we can to ensure water is used wisely.” IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis supports the initiative, saying there are immediate
steps the community can take to reduce water wastage. “Given it’s the middle of summer now, we’re looking at shortterm approaches – things like making sure your sprinkler waters your plants and not the patio, driveway or footpath; using timers; watering early in the morning and in the evening and using mulch to help your soil re-
tain water,” he said. The SMART Watering campaign, developed by IrrigationNZ, and launched by Canterbury councils in October last year, is an educational campaign promoting water-wise farming principles in suburban gardens. The campaign is a tool for residents, particularly with water restrictions in place across

NZer wins prestigious humane award For the first time in nearly 50 years, a New Zealander has been awarded the prestigious United Kingdom Royal Humane Society’s Stanhope Medal. In 2015, Murray Michie, then 58, rescued Susan Evans and her three daughters from their burning vehicle after a road crash in Manawatu. As others helped keep the flames at bay, Michie cut three of them from their seatbelts with a pocket knife. Last year he was awarded the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand’s Silver Medal in recognition of his bravery. The New Zealand society also nominated him for the Stanhope Medal, and he came out ahead of nominations from societies in Australia, Canada and the UK. New Zealand society president Austin Forbes says the last New Zealander to be awarded the medal was Mt Cook ranger Robert Ryan in 1968, for belaying down a crevasse to help rescue a climber whose climbing companion was killed. Despite the lethal combination of smoke, flames and leaking petrol, Michie had helped rescue Evans and her daughters and moments later their vehicle exploded. “It’s just incredible. People see what’s happened and feel there’s no alternative but to go in there. It’s very much to their credit,” Forbes said. The society is hoping GovernorGeneral Patsy Reddy will agree to present the medal to Michie but a date is yet to be confirmed. -NZME

Four injured in crash Three people suffered serious injuries and one is in a moderate condition after a plane bounced off the end of a runway at a Marlborough airfield. Four people were on board and one had to be extracted from the plane by the Fire Service, police said. Helicopters were sent to take the patients to hospital. A spokeswoman for the Kaikoura Aerodrome said a small plane heading into the Clarence area had come down north of Kekerengu. It had left from a Canterbury airfield earlier in the morning with at least one passenger. The airstrip is remote and emergency services gained access by quadbikes. - NZME

Adams said the number of people waiting for social housing tended to fluctuate. “Nevertheless it’s clear that the number of people seeking our help has risen,” she said. “As a nation we are aware that the demand for housing is putting pressure on families, particularly in Auckland. “We’ve been actively encouraging people to get in touch with Work and Income when they need help and I’m pleased to see that message getting through.” Adams said there was a gap between the existing pool of social housing and the type of houses applicants were seeking. The data showed a rise in people seeking one and two-bed-
The official waiting list for social housing has risen again to nearly 4800 households, nearly half of whom are in Auckland. The waiting list is now at its highest level since it was transferred to Work and Income in mid-2014. Figures released by new Social Housing Minister Amy Adams yesterday show the number of people on the list jumped by 169 in the last three months of 2016 to 4771 – an increase of 3.7 per cent. Over the last year, the list grew by 37.3 per cent. The increase was driven mostly by demand in Auckland, where the list grew by 153 people to 2060. The biggest increases were in South Auckland suburbs such as Mangere, Otara and Manurewa. The waiting list also grew in
room properties. Adams’ predecessor Paula Bennett announced $300 million in funding for emergency housing in November. The National-led Government began funding emergency housing for the first time in late 2015. The figures released yesterday by Adams also showed that another 1339 social housing tenants were seeking a transfer to another property. That is an increase of 171 households over the last quarter. Over the same period, 1748 households were moved into social housing. The number of state houses has fallen from a peak of 69,717 in June 2011 to 64,240 in September 2016, partly because of the transfer of 2800 houses to the Tamaki Regeneration Company last year. - NZME NOW

School costs increase significantly The primary and secondary education of a child born in New Zealand today is expected to cost parents up to $345,996, the latest research from a sector funding provider shows. The ASG New Zealand Planning for Education Index released today, has estimated the cost of 13 years of education to be $38,362 at a state school, $109,354 at an integrated school and $345,996 at a private school. The education index is independently verified and based on almost 2000 responses which measure a range of variables to determine the costs of education, including school fees, transport, uniforms, computers, school excursions and sporting trips. It also shows the costs during the past decade (2007-2017) have surged. The estimated cost of 13 years’ education in a state school has increased 15 per cent, from $33,274 starting in 2007, to $38,362 starting in 2017. During the same timeframe, education in state integrated schools had increased 34 per cent ($81,765), and a whopping 48 per cent ($233,678) in private schools. John Velegrinis, chief executive officer of funding provider ASG, said New Zealanders were fortunate to have excellent state, state-
integrated and private schools to choose from, but costs could spiral out of control. “If you have three children, the cost of educating them in New Zealand’s private education system could top more than $1million. Mr Velegrinis suggested parents
use “a disciplined approach” to funding their children’s education costs, by putting a little bit away each week so they can financially afford to “meet their children’s educational goals and aspirations”. Mr Velegrinis said the cost of education in New Zealand had risen by double the rate of inflation
during the past decade. “Independent research predicts the cost of education will increase, irrespective of whether you send your child to a state, state integrated or private school. “Estimated costs for a state education in New Zealand have risen by 15 per cent over the last
decade, and costs for a state integrated and private school education have gone up sharply by more than $27,000 and $112,000 respectively.” He said New Zealand parents fared better than Australian parents, who could expect to pay significantly more for their children’s education across state and private schools over 13 years. The education index revealed for a child born in 2017, Australian parents could pay up to 88 per cent more (an extra $33,558), to send their child to a state school in metropolitan Australia. “The difference in the forecast cost of a private education between the two countries is 48 per cent with Australian parents expecting to pay $164,575 more than New Zealand parents.” Melbourne-based independent statistician and Foreseechange managing director Charlie Nelson said a range of economic factors was influencing the cost of education. “Employment growth, hourly wages and inflation all impact the cost of living, which puts extra strain on the family budget. With school fees likely to rise further, it has never been more important for parents to financially plan for their child’s future.” -NZME

Fire claims fourth victim Fire investigators have revealed they do not know what caused the Auckland house fire that yesterday claimed its fourth victim. Refugee Council of New Zealand secretary Kaileshan “Kailesh” Thanabalasingham, 47, escaped the blaze in Flat Bush on December 22 but was severely burned. His 11-year-old daughter and 69-year-old father-in-law also escaped the fire. Counties Manukau fire risk managment officer Phil Faidley said despite exstensive investigations it was impossible to work out the cause of the fatal fire. “We have ascertained the fire’s origin but unfortunately because we are unable to be conclusive, the cause of the fire is undetermined.” He said the fatal fire started in the home’s ground floor lounge and dining area and would have been smouldering before bursting into flame. “The indications are the fire had been a low, smouldering fire that might have been burning for 90 minutes,” he said. There was at least one work-
ing smoke alarm in the house that survivors of the fire reported hearing as they made their escape. Faidley said yesterday’s death, which added to the fire’s already grim toll, was a tragic outcome. “I really feel for the family and I feel for the community and I feel for our guys as well,” he said. Family spokeswoman, barrister Deborah Manning, told the New Zealand Herald Thanabalasingham died at Middlemore Hospital just before 7am. She was unsure if Thanabalasingham’s daughter had been told of her father’s death. The fire claimed the lives of Thanabalasingham’s 5-year-old son Bareth Kailesh, 39-year-old wife Bhamini Theiventhiran and 66-year-old mother-in-law Umadhevi Theiventhiran. Thanabalasingham was heavily sedated after the fire and was not able to attend the funeral of his family members at the Manukau Memorial Gardens this month. It is understood he was not aware of the deaths of his son, wife and mother-in-law. -NZME

New Zealand was one of the first countries to establish a base on the frozen continent, and over the six decades since, the country had been at the forefront of scientific research and exploration on the ice, Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Peter Beggs said.
On January 20, 1957, a flag-raising ceremony was held outside the original Scott Base that had just been built by a team led by Sir Edmund Hillary. Beggs said Antarctica New Zealand wanted to do more than just cut a cake to mark the milestone. “We wanted to celebrate our history and success at Scott Base, but we wanted to use the anniversary to draw attention to the significance of Antarctica, how the continent is changing, and the impact this has on the rest of the world. “Global warming means our scientific work in Antarctica is more important than ever before; what happens to the Ice over coming
decades will effect the entire global population.” To highlight the issue, Antarctica New Zealand is hosting TEDxScottBase – a series of talks from 10 internationally recognised speakers. Beggs said the team at Scott Base was also preparing a more low-key but fitting celebration. “They’re having a 1957-style morning tea, complete with lamingtons, cheese rolls and pigs in blankets. When a wall’s not just a wall Contemporary New Zealand artist, Mark Braunias, completed his eyepopping installation at the Ashburton Art Gallery this week. He spoke with Megan Gnad about his inspiration, love of painting giant wall canvases and why Mid Canterbury should be proud of its local gallery.

N
o-one looks at a wall in quite the same way as Mark Braunias. In fact, when he first visited the Ashburton Art Gallery, the stark white foyer was the first thing he noticed and he couldn’t shake it from his mind as his head swam wildly with outrageous possibilities. The only thing to do was to approach the staff with a proposal that would allow him free rein to paint the 6m x 4m canvas in his own unique, contemporary style. With permission granted, the Kawhia-based artist returned at the beginning of January where he set up shop in the main foyer; paintbrushes and testpots strewn over a table, under the watchful eye of every guest and visitor to the public space. He was in his element. Over a 10-day period he completed the work titled, Assemble, Disassemble, Reassemble, designed to explore all living, growing forms in bright acrylic mediums, inks and intense colours. Yet in just six short months it will be gone. Painted over and returned to the white wall with no lasting legacy other than a photograph of the work he describes as part Charles Darwin, part Walt Disney. But this process is something Braunias is used to, having painted temporary installations at respected institutions across the country, the first one being for the Auckland Public Art Gallery. “It makes you lose some of your preciousness about it and you get a lift from it,” he said. “I don’t have any angst about them getting painted out. Nothing is permanent. “You respond in different ways to different social environments and no wall is the same.”

For this particular work, he chose to look at biological forms, but says it is open to interpretation and enjoys hearing what different people see in the eyepopping creation. “To me, it’s about organic shapes morphing and transforming into new shapes,” he said. “It’s a cross between abstract and figuration. I don’t like to tell people what to think.
“Working in public you get a lot of kids who get it in one. A girl said it looked like notebook studies and body parts. It’s interesting, I don’t think, ‘you’ve missed the point’, everyone has different life perspectives.” Braunias said he had a “visual bank of imagery” that he drew on in the lead-up to starting the work and he prepped by making one almost to scale in his North
Island studio. “I had a design and theme and structure but wanted to be open to shifts and changes,” says the Canterbury School of Fine Arts graduate. “When you’re painting, you have to be alive to the surface and respond to the work. “It’s 1000 per cent made in Ashburton, the shifts and changes happened here.” Back home in Kawhia, Braunias
works out of an old wooden BNZ Bank building, circa 1918, with the original teller area serving as his studio. While he used to commute to Auckland to teach, he now prefers to stay locally and finds time to lecture art at The Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). He has completed Artist-inResidence programmes at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery (2002), Southland Museum and Art Gallery (2005) and the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui, (2007) and his work is held in public, corporate and private collections in New Zealand and overseas. In 2010, he was awarded a Fulbright/Wallace scholarship to take up a residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco. This inspired him to publish a limited edition drawing book titled Encyclo – Dimensional featuring writings and drawings completed during the threemonth residency. “It was the highlight of my career,” he said. “I worked with artists from all over the globe. I got a lot of confidence, it was a real lift. “And I used to ride a bike over the Golden Gate Bridge once a week to look at the galleries.” With all his knowledge and experience of galleries around the world, Braunias is quick to point out how special the Ashburton Art Gallery is, saying Mid Canterbury locals should be proud of such a venue. “It’s a good space here,” he said. “I’ve probably enjoyed it most in the mornings when the light crossed over. I’ve done projects for some public galleries and this place is as good as anything. “The staff are great, particularly Shirin (Khosraviani). She is the hardest-working director in the country. “She goes the extra mile with a passion for showing art to the Mid Canterbury community.” While Braunias only manages to complete one or two wall works a year, he won’t be forgetting his Ashburton project in a hurry, saying he always takes inspiration as a template for the year. “It’s a challenge and serious fun,” he said. “And because of the quirky shapes, there’s a humorous quality as well. “I really respond to putting art in the wall rather than putting the object on top. I get excited about wall work, I think it’s the performance aspect.”

lus-size blogger Callie Thorpe has hit back at bullies who launched a vicious attack on her wedding and honeymoon photos. The size 24 fashion and lifestyle writer, from London, recently tied the knot with fellow blogger Daniel Hetherington with the pair jetting off to Tulum, Mexico, after their nuptials. Callie has been posting a series of bikini snaps, but says her social media accounts have been littered with cruel comments from people who “want to torment or bully me for my size”. She had previously re-tweeted comments on Twitter saying things like “Save the whales” and “When you slipped into your wedding dress did you have to use grease?” But after returning to London last week, Callie took to Instagram to post a poignant message to her trolls. “Take a seat and ENJOY THE SHOW, that is my happy life,” she wrote. “So I have extra weight, I also have ridiculously wonderful friends, a great job and a person that loves me. ALL OF ME from head to toe, big or small, fat or thin. “I have a constant, loving kind, companion, to travel with, to laugh with, to ease the pain during the bad times in life. Sadly all you have is anger and hatred. “So I’ll take being fat, I’d rather be overweight and full of love than an image of perfection and lonely. But on this final note I send you nothing but love and light and hope that one day you get even a tiny drop of what I have because it sure sounds lonely on that pedestal of yours up there.” Her post racked up more than 7400 likes and a wave of support from her 115,000 followers. One wrote: “Well said ... So much respect for you right now,” while others lashed out at the “sad and lonely pitiful” internet trolls. In an earlier post, the style blogger, who writes a column for Marie Claire, posted a picture with the caption: “It’s not brave to be in a Bikini guys, it’s just not. I don’t deserve a medal or your praise when I put one on and share it on Instagram. “Let’s all get to a point where it’s just normal for a woman to put on a bathing suit on her holiday and it not be a big deal. gently for 8–10 minutes, or until breast is cooked. ■ Once cooked, remove the chicken breast from the stock and keep warm. ■ To prepare the glass noodles, bring a large pot of water to the boil. Add the noodles and cook for 2 minutes. Refresh the noodles in ice cold water then drain. ■ Once the noodles are drained; mix with chopped coriander, mung beans, snow pea shoots,
remaining sliced 1/2 red chili and sesame oil. Lastly mix in chopped roasted unsalted cashew nuts and season with cracked pepper and the juice of 1/2 a lemon. ■ To serve: Place the glass noodles in the centre of a deep bowl and serve sliced cooked chicken breast on top. Sport Paddon crashes out
Spectator dies; team withdraw car A spectator involved in Kiwi Hayden Paddon’s rally crash in Monte Carlo has died. The Hyundai driver lost control on ice, and slid off the road and into a bank, where someone was standing. There are conflicting reports about whether Paddon’s car hit the spectator, or whether he fell from the steep bank into which the car crashed. Live footage showed the spectator tumble down the bank and other spectators rush to check on the person. Paddon and co-driver John Kennard were not injured.
A short time ago Hyundai Motorsport said via social media they would be withdrawing from the event, a tweet which Paddon shared with his followers. In a statement Hayden Paddon RallySport Global Ltd said “we are deeply saddened to have just received the following statement from Rally Monte Carlo officials, plus the following statement from Hyundai Motorsport: It is with great sadness that the Automobile Club de Monaco confirms further details of the incident that occurred in SS1 with car #4 (Paddon/Kennard). “A spectator was transported
by helicopter from the stage to hospital in Nice. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, the spectator has sadly died. “The team has withdrawn car #4 from the rally as a mark of respect for the spectator who sadly passed away in the incident.” “An investigation has commenced into the incident and all involved parties will provide assistance to the authorities. “Everyone associated with the event extends their deepest sympathies and condolences to the families, friends and individuals affected.” Paddon said he was “incredibly
saddened by today’s accident and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the person involved. It’s difficult to say much more at the moment as we are in shock with what has happened. I’m sorry for the family, the fans and our sport.” Hayden Paddon RallySport Global Ltd said “this is an extremely sad end to a difficult day for Hayden and John. There will be no further comment from either of them at this time”. Following the crash the stage was cancelled by rally organisers. Conditions were treacherous in the hills, where the night-time
stage was being held. Black ice featured prominently in zero degrees Celsius, making it difficult for drivers to judge grip levels. Four-time world champion Sebastien Ogier and Paddon’s Hyundai teammate Thierry Neuville had already completed the stage when Paddon had his crash. Both drivers spoke of difficult driving conditions. Monte Carlo is known as one of the more technical courses on the world rally circuit. Drivers may not be at top speed, but would still be grappling with more power through corners. - NZME

NZ hold advantage after day one New Zealand claimed the advantage on the opening day of the second test at Christchurch, despite a series of fielding calamities and a shot of Bangladeshi batting grit. Tim Southee’s lbw of Kamrul Islam brought the day to a close, dismissing Bangladesh for 289. It was the right-armer’s sixth test five-wicket bag, leaving him two victims short of becoming the fifth New Zealand bowler to reach 200 wickets. However, four dropped slip catches – two from Jeet Raval, one from Ross Taylor and one from Southee – dulled the lustre on the hosts’ performance. Southee (five for 94 from 28.3 overs) and Trent Boult (four for 87 from 24 overs) pitched up for the most part to reap dividends from swing and seam on the fresh pitch. Rep team hoping to bounce back from loss Mid Canterbury will be looking to bounce back this weekend in their bid for the Hawke Cup after their comprehensive innings and 45 run loss to South Canterbury in early December. The side will be travelling to In-
vercargill to take on Southland in the two-day match. Batting was a serious issue for Mid Canterbury, only posting a dismal 79 runs in the first innings and 87 runs in the second and that has been an area of focus,
coach Garfield Charles said. He believes the team’s Achilles heel has been batting and said it has been a strong area of focus recently. Charles believes the Queen’s Park surface may be more bat-

The Pritchard Shield will be decided in Methven today, but neither side is wishing to label themselves the favourite. Allenton’s captain Jeff Naish and Methven’s captain Mitch Sim both believe their sides are underdogs coming in to the match, but for two different reasons. Naish believes it is the form book that is putting the pressure on Methven as they have beaten Allenton twice earlier in the season so expectation will be on
Methven to continue that form. In Sim’s eyes Methven are the underdogs due to the number of experienced players on the Allenton team sheet. Methven are coming into the fixture in fine form after a comprehensive 49 run victory over Coldstream last week. “A good strong team performance is what we need, the boys are quite excited as we haven’t contested for any silverware in quite a while,” Sim said. Allenton will be looking to bounce back from their 17 run
loss to Lauriston last week that, had they won, would’ve made this fixture a dead rubber. “We lost wickets in clumps last week and never really put any solid partnerships together, which we will need to improve on,” said Naish, in regards to what will be important for his team to win the match. If Methven lose they still have the potential to be overtaken by Coldstream who take on Tech in the other fixture on the weekend. Coldstream sit two points behind Methven and should they
defeat last place Tech and Methven lose to Allenton, Coldstream will move in to second place. Tech themselves have a chance to propel themselves up the table as a victory would see them move level on points with Lauriston and Coldstream. An already superior net run rate to Lauriston would see Tech move to fourth but a substantial increase in net run rate would be required to overtake Coldstream for third. Lauriston sit out the final round of fixtures with the bye.
Steven Adams’ absence was keenly felt during Oklahoma City Thunder’s latest loss, but more for his intimidation factor than his scoring and rebounding stats. The Kiwi NBA star has missed the Thunder’s last two games – both losses – with concussion, after knocking his head on the floor during a win over Sacramento Kings earlier this week. He remains in the league-mandated concussion protocol. But commentators wondered aloud what might have been, when his team needed an enforcer on court against Golden State Warriors yesterday. Just before half-time, Thunder superstar Russell Westbrook was flattened by Warriors centre Zaza Pachulia, who then stood over the prone OKC guard, as he writhed on the floor. Pachulia was assessed a flagrant foul by officials and Westbrook later hinted the matter was not finished. “He hit me kind of hard,” said Westbrook. “But it’s all right – I’m gonna get his ass back, straight up.” During half-time on ESPN coverage, former NBA players Jalen Rose and Chauncy Billups hinted the situation could have ended very differently if Adams had been on court, claiming it would likely have escalated back in their days, once their designated enforcers intervened. “Bodies would have moved,” warned Billups. During his short career, Adams has carved a hard-man reputation, refusing to take a backward step in confrontations with some of the league’s toughest players. A square-up between him and Pachulia would have added another chapter to this standing. Australia’s BLK sport apparel business, which supplies gear to the Silver Ferns netball team and the Canterbury rugby union team, has been bought from receivers by a private consortium of TimorLeste and Fiji-based investors. The consortium led by Esperança Timor Oan (ETO), a Timor-Leste based oil and energy company, acquired the BLK business, brand and associated sub-brands from the World Rugby Specialists (WRS) for an undisclosed sum. Bradford links denied Brian McClennan is refuting claims he’s heading back to the Super League. Tietjens taking small steps It is small steps for Sir Gordon Tietjens in his new role as coach of the Samoan Sevens team. Lying a lowly 12th on the World Series table after two legs, the only way is up for Samoa, and it starts with the Wellington tournament next weekend in a pool shared with New Zealand, USA and France. Qualification for the Cup quarter-finals, by virtue of finishing in the top two, would delight Tietjens, who officially started his job on January 1. For the past fortnight, his charges have been training hard in his back yard of Mt Maunganui, and Tietjens himself feels refreshed with his new job. “I’m very pleased. We’ve got 18 out here, all bar two are from the island, and we’re giving them that experience of operating here in New Zealand with higher intensity and it’s probably a quicker game here too,” he says. “It’s coming. It’s not a quick fix, but it’s really promising.” Those who know Tietjens will be unsurprised that he has identified fitness and nutrition as key work-ons for the Samoans, so they should be in good nick when they hit Wellington on Tuesday.

Arscott sacked over leak English rugby side Sale Sharks have sacked winger Tom Arscott after he allegedly leaked information to Premiership rivals Bristol. Sharks chief executive Jon Dorsett said in a brief statement that the decision followed a disciplinary investigation and hearing. Arscott, 29, had been suspended by the club since January 4, three days after Bristol beat Sale 24-23. Bristol said earlier this week that Arscott met his brother Luke - a Bristol player - at the team hotel on New Year’s Eve. But the west country club insist that “nothing of any sporting value” was passed on to coaching staff and that they were “entirely confident we have not acted in a way that is against the spirit and values of rugby.” A complaint made by Sale relating “to the passing of information to the opposition team” is currently being investigated by the Rugby Football Union. Sale suspended wing Arscott, who joined
the club from London Welsh in 2013, after his team-mates expressed concerns to the north-west club’s director of rugby Steve Diamond. When Diamond was questioned about the situation on Tuesday, he revealed that Arscott had been suspended. “We investigated it internally and we are going through a disciplinary, and under the regulations, we have to report it (to the RFU), so we did that,” Diamond said. When then asked how disruptive it had been for the rest of his squad, Diamond, whose side have lost their last 10 matches in all competitions, added: “The squad are galvanised. “They came to me with the problem. I knew nothing about it. To some, the fall of Samoan sevens status since 2010 has been perplexing, and the failure to qualify for Rio was a heavy blow for a proud nation. “There just isn’t the depth at the moment. All those players with whom they won the World Series are all playing (15s) offshore now in Europe and Japan,” Tietjens offers by way of explanation. He is working closely with Manu Samoa coach Alama Ieremia, who has a similar repair job to haul them back up the rankings from their current position of 15. In summary, Tietjens is loving being back doing hands-on coaching after the heartache of Rio. “I feel really energised. I’ve got a four-year goal with them, but I want to see major improvement from each tournament.” While the Samoan Rugby Union have had their issues with governance in the past, Tietjens laughed when asked if he had been paid on time. Australian jockey takes Cup ride Australian Racing Hall of Fame jockey Robert Thompson (right) will break new ground when he takes his first Wellington Cup ride aboard Queensland visitor Pop ‘N’ Scotch at Trentham today. Thompson, 58, has achieved most things in racing over a 44year career in the saddle but he has never ridden at Trentham before and has yet to ride a winner in New Zealand. However, Thompson has only had a handful of rides in New Zealand over the years and last rode in the country in the Bayer Classic (now the Levin Classic) back in the ’80s. “I’ve been to New Zealand a few times but haven’t had any success. It would be nice to do that in a race as important as the Wellington Cup,” Thompson said. “I’ve been long-time friends with Liam Birchley, who trains Pop ‘N’ Scotch. He’s a good mate of mine and he’s been very loyal to me. He asked if I’d like to go to

New Zealand to ride this horse and I said I was only too happy to do so. “This horse ran second in the Queensland Cup over two miles and that’s his go. He’s got no class but he’ll run the distance. Liam said it wasn’t a vintage field for the Cup this year and that’s what convinced him to go. “It sounds like there’s a bit of rain about and that will help him as well.” The six-year-old has won four of his 37 starts and has finished second in the Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at the Sunshine Coast for the past two years. NZ inflation expected above 1%

president subsided, and the markets focused on the positives of lower taxes and higher infrastructure spending. Growth sectors have benefited at the expense of defensive yield companies which are less attractive as a result of higher interest rates. In New Zealand dollar terms, United States equities delivered the strongest returns over the quarter as the market focused on the Trump growth dividend, the potential $US2.4 trillion that corporates could repatriate and a stronger United States dollar. European equity returns were not far behind, after these markets produced the strongest rally globally in December. Improved economic activity helped by the weaker Euro and the extension of the accommodative monetary policies drove the gains. In Australasian markets, Australian equities benefited from higher commodity prices and the potential for stronger demand for iron ore as infrastructure spending is brought forward. Oil companies also benefited as OPEC announced upcoming cuts to production. New Zealand equities, despite having been the stand-out performer for the last few years, declined. New Zealand equities are dominated by defensive higher-yielding companies which have been the biggest beneficiaries of the record low interest rates. With the environment now changing, some of this attraction has unwound as investors have rotated away from more interest rate sensitive sectors. spending are unquestionably inflationary. The increase in budget deficits will lead to increasing supply and therefore higher costs of funding, while the already positive economic growth occurring in the United States and low unemployment also increases inflationary pressures. New Zealand longerterm bonds are highly correlated to United States interest rates, so higher longer-term rates should be expected. Shorter-term rates are also expected to rise despite the outlook for no change in the Official Cash Rate (OCR). This is likely to be driven by higher bank deposit rates, as banks attempt to maintain core funding ratios. Deposit growth has been lagging lending growth and this has already led to tighter credit conditions. We believe banks are likely to continue to increase mortgage rates, but also to raise deposit rates in order to restore a better balance between offshore wholesale funding and domestic deposits. Investors in financial assets have benefited from falling and low interest rates for many years. Fixed interest portfolios have been deemed low risk in this environment. Looking forward, pressure on governments to invest more in their economies, larger fiscal deficits and higher inflation in a still heavily indebted world, mean investors will need to look for more than income from their investment portfolios. Fixed income assets will carry higher risk, while growth assets will be back in fashion.

lobal environment – Higher growth and inflation in prospect. The United States presidential election was the defining feature in the final quarter of 2016. It highlighted the revolt against the status quo, stagnant incomes and increasing inequality in favour of something new. Trump’s platform included many protectionist and inflammatory policies, but at its heart lowering taxes and investing in infrastructure is pro-growth. This should boost the already recovering United States economy and lead to higher wage inflation. The timing of policy implementation should see tax cuts bolster growth as early as the first half of 2017, while infrastructure spending is not expected to commence until the second half of the year. However, the increased borrowing and inflationary impacts have already started to be reflected in higher long-term interest rates and brought about the end to the bull market in global bonds. The Euro-area economy finished 2016 with the strongest economic momentum in more than five-and-a-half years. Strength in both the manufacturing and service sectors was due in part to a weaker euro, but economic expansion was indicated in the four largest European economies, with Spain leading the way, followed by Germany. Whether this is enough to dampen the backlash against the status quo is unknown. Accordingly, it was unsurprising that the European Central Bank decided in December to prolong its asset-purchase programme through to the end of 2017, amid the uncertainty from looming European national elections and the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. ANZ is forecasting a 0.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter CPI result and annual inflation of 1.2 per cent. The central bank cut interest rates to a record low 1.75 per cent in November in a bid to stoke inflation in an economy growing ahead of expectations. At the time, however, it signalled an end to the easing cycle, forecasting rates would stay on hold for the next two years. ASB Bank economist Kim Mundy said the RBNZ may be “relieved” to see inflation back within the target band but “enough downside risks remain for the RBNZ to keep the OCR on hold for the foreseeable future,” she said. Among other things, the New Zealand dollar remains high on a trade-weighted basis and this will continue to be a drag on tradable inflation, she said. ASB expects the CPI to register a 0.2 per cent increase in the fourth quarter, with annual inflation jumping to 1.1 per cent.

Higher fuel prices probably pushed New Zealand’s annual inflation back above 1 per cent for the first time in more than two years in the December quarter. Economists expect inflation was 0.2 per cent in the final three months of 2016 for an annual rise of 1.2 per cent, according to the median in a BusinessDesk poll. The central bank is tipping annual inflation to be 1.1 per cent in the fourth quarter. The consumer price index rose 0.3 per cent in the third quarter of last year bringing the annual rate to 0.4 per cent. Annual inflation has not been higher than 1 per cent since the September 2014 quarter. Fuel-driven inflation isn’t unique to New Zealand as the price of crude oil has recovered from its slump in 2015. US con-

The RBNZ will “take some comfort” from the return to the target band “but the renewed strength of the New Zealand dollar means that inflation will remain subdued for some time yet,” said Westpac Banking Corp acting chief economist Michael Gordon. The New Zealand dollar has remained persistently high as the nation’s relatively upbeat economic outlook continues to make it attractive in an uncertain global environment. Also, with inflation still at the lower end of the range and likely to remain so for a while longer “there’s no case for withdrawing the monetary stimulus that the RBNZ has applied over the past couple of years,” said Gordon. Westpac is expecting a 0.2 per cent increase in CPI for the quarter, which will bring annual inflation to 1.2 per cent.

Car ploughs into crowd Three people including a baby have been killed and at least 20 others injured after they were deliberately run down in a busy inner-city Melbourne mall during a police chase that ended in gunfire. Three other children were also among the casualties. The car – driven by a man who had been involved in a stabbing earlier in the day in Melbourne’s southeast – ploughed through the crowd in Bourke Street mall about 1.30pm. Ten News originally reported the man at the centre of the pursuit had been shot dead but police said he was alive and in custody. He was seen shirtless and lying only in his underwear, surrounded by police. Witnesses say a pram – and a child – were hit by the car and dragged at least 100 metres and it was later confirmed the baby had been killed. “Where is my baby, where is my baby,” a frantic mother was heard screaming. A woman, who was too traumatised to speak on camera, told Sky News that she estimated the driver was travelling at 80km/h. She said she saw the

when the driver who caused the police operation in #Melbourne went past. Shirtless, cigarette hanging out of his mouth”. Police believe the incident is related to a stabbing in Windsor in southeast Melbourne earlier yesterday and is not terror related. Two men were involved in the stabbing and were known to each other. The driver was arrested at
the Elizabeth Street end of the mall, and was seen lying on the ground dressed only in red underwear and white shoes with police standing over him. The mangled wreckage of half a pram was stuck on the bonnet of the car, while what appeared to be the other half was about 100 metres further up the mall at a pedestrian crossing on William Street. - NZME

Avalanche flattens hotel; 30 people inside Rescue crews who reached the four-star mountain resort on skis found only eerie silence yesterday after a huge avalanche flattened the hotel, trapping more than 30 people inside. Two bodies were recovered, but the search for survivors was hampered by heavy snowfall and fears the buildings would collapse. Two people escaped the devastation at the Hotel Rigopiano in the mountains of central Italy and called for help. But it took hours for responders to verify their claims and arrive at the remote earthquake-stricken zone. They worked through the night, but hopes were dimming of finding survivors. ‘El Chapo’ extradited from Mexico Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Mexico’s most notorious cartel kingpin who twice made brazen prison escapes and spent years on the run as the country’s most wanted man, was extradited to the US yesterday to face drug trafficking and other charges.
Nicole Kidman got more than she bargained for when she sat down for a recent radio interview. Kidman found herself faced with a succession of questions about her children, her past and current relationships and even her husband’s battle with alcoholism. The 49-year-old star seemed at times shocked by the line of questioning, veering away from sensitive topics and, at one stage, flat out refusing to answer a question. Presenter Jenni Murray didn’t hold back in asking Kidman about her well-documented personal history.
Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department announced Guzman was handed over to US authorities for transportation to the US yesterday. The US Justice Department issued a statement confirming that Guzman was en route to the United States and ex-
pressed gratitude to Mexico for its cooperation. A senior US official said the US Drug Enforcement Administration took custody of Guzman in Ciudad Juarez, which is across the border from El Paso, Texas. The convicted boss of the
Sinaloa cartel, one of the world’s largest drug trafficking organisations, had been held most recently at a prison near Ciudad Juarez. He was recaptured a year ago after escaping from a second maximum-security prison through a tunnel dug to his cell. - AP

orget the smutty sheep jokes, they’re about as outdated as the sheep themselves. Where once New Zealanders were known as a country of sheep lovers, with 22 of them for every one of us, we’re now getting the sheep-human ratio much more in balance, one of us for six of them. And while the massive numbers of woolly Kiwis might have made us the butt of many jokes, those numbers also made us rich as a country. Our economic reputation was built on the backs and carcasses of sheep. How that’s changed. The sheep industry is now something of a niche industry, replaced by dairying and with that change in animal has come a massive change in landscape and farming ethos. Sheep farmers were traditionally farming families. Generation after generation farmed the land, looked after their stock and, while farm practices changed, the basis for livelihoods did not. All that has changed in less than one generation. Now dairy cows are the district’s growth industry. Today’s farming community is very different to the farming community just one generation back. Now it’s not about succession, about inter-generational knowledge, about farming that’s “in the blood”. Today’s farmers are businessmen and women. They just happen to make their living farming cows. The new breed of farmer is not bred to be a farmer, rather they’ve chosen to farm because it’s a business from which they know they can make a living. Dairying has opened the doors to those who previously would never have been able to, to make a living from the land. It’s introduced a new diversity of thinking. Are we richer as a country because of the change? In terms of our economy, yes, but in terms of rural communities, possibly, no. Where once inter-generational ties bound rural families to their community and to one another, now those ties are much looser. Many rural areas now can scarcely say they are a community. The common interests, the shared history, they’ve all but gone and for many who are first-generation business farmers, their interests are so much broader than just home patch. There’ve been massive wins, but we’ve also lost something very special along the way, rural New Zealand the way it was.

s widely anticipated, 2017 has dawned, thus succeeding the previous year, 2016. So, it seems, there are still manifestations of continuing certainty on which, in this otherwise constantly changing world, we can rely. For such relief we offer much thanks. However, the fact that the new year has appeared precisely when we expected it to is no guarantee of its providing the eagerly desired improvement on the 12 months past, even now still receding, reluctantly, into the cellar of forgettable history. Certainly not! We in the Western World must now contemplate a very uncertain future indeed. The fact is, that same Western World, of which we have always been, more or less, happy to be a member, is to be led by a man apparently put in place courtesy of Russian telecommunication trickery. This man has already shown himself to be a charlatan of dazzling dexterity, a misogynist of considerable charm, a “Twit”(ter) of inexhaustible insult and selfpromotion, with other, similar attributes too numerous to mention. He dislikes, viciously, any attempt to contradict or satirise him, as on US evening television, and has promised, repeatedly, “to change the world”, now his inauguration has, at last, come around. In his first 100 days in office, he has, among other things, threatened a complete re-arrangement of the United Nations, the end of the much-fought-over Obamacare and to get his small hands firmly on the nuclear codes (and buttons). All this adds up to the very real possibility of our having just enjoyed our last Christmas on this planet. If any of his threats were to eventuate, if not actually bringing to an abrupt end, life as we have always known it, it would guarantee a serious

One can’t help feeling Vladimir Putin has done to the Western World what James Bond went to such singular lengths and considerable personal discomfort to prevent. No democracy can now be safe from Russian destabilising interference in the forming of future Western governments. undermining of much of what we hold dear. Pending utterances of sinister depth and grave implication are further forecast. The Trump inauguration day, that day inevitably to be known forever-after as infamous, will likely have dawned cold and ominous in Washington DC. By now, therefore, we would be well advised to have our bags packed, exits clearly marked and plans in place for immediate evacuation and nuclear shelter. But hey, I may just be exaggerating. The coming of Trump could still be a whimper rather than a bang. American life, and ours with it, might yet survive. America will very soon and undoubtedly, “be great again”, just as Trump has consistently said it would. We shall be nicer to each other and Isis will be carpetbombed into speedy extinction, if not actually “nuked”. So sleeping in our beds at night should no longer be a problem for even the hitherto most rest-
less insomniac. But (again) that could be merely an exercise in blind survival hope rather than a realistic assessment of what may be to come. One can’t help feeling Mr V. Putin has done to the Western World what James Bond went to such singular lengths and considerable personal discomfort to prevent. “Putin The Terrible” seems to have succeeded where even Goldfinger failed. No democracy can now be safe from Russian destabilising interference in the forming of future Western governments. And such interference requires nothing like the blood and violence in which Mr Bond has always had to indulge before getting his way. What’s more, Putin doesn’t even need a modern Mata Hari to get him over the line. Then there is the little matter of the quaint electoral college system in America which has intriguingly seen Trump win the presidency despite receiving
three million fewer votes than his main rival. Even though a similar result is still possible in the UK, where the First Past the Post system (FPP) is used, in both countries such results are real political headscratchers calling for re-appraisal and re-think. A democracy, after all, can hardly be one unless seen to be so by the inhabitants who exercise their democratic right to vote for the candidate of their choice. However, no such arcane point has made any last-minute change to the ascent of Donald Trump to the leadership of the free world today. Fasten your seatbelts, there may be bumps in the road ahead. Applicants should ideally have experience in the following, • Be experienced in spraying/cropping. • Class 2 drivers licence. • Be able to read and understand chemical recommendations. • Be able to communicate well with farmers/agronomists and other staff members. • G.P.S. experience with TopCon would be an advantage but not necessary, as long as willing to learn. • Be mechanically minded and able to solve problems in the field. • Ideally live in the Ashburton/Hinds area and have a knowledge of Mid Canterbury. • Be prepared to work extended hours in peak season, weather depending, with early morning starts also weekends.
