Hare Krishna devotee Yashoda Dulal Das is enjoying life in the slow lane as he travels the length of the country with his trusty wagon-drawing stead Samson, sharing his philosophy on the journey.

Samson, a gypsy cob, has spent the past couple of weeks resting up in Staveley, where the trip began almost five months ago to honour the 50th anniversary of the Hare Krishna movement in the western world.

The pair have trekked south through the Mackenzie Country, over the Lin-

dis Pass, before taking in Cromwell and heading into the Nevis Pass to Riverton.

They have also visited the country’s southernmost landfall, Slope Point, before turning north again and travelling through the Catlins, Dunedin, up the Waitaki Valley and across the Mackenzie Pass before turning back toward Staveley.

The 2000km journey has taken them off the beaten track and offered the chance to catch up with old acquaintances, to make new friends and to share the philosophy of his faith with others.

The GO NZ – God’s Own New Zealand: from Down Under to Up Above walk is

one of 50 such pilgrimages under way across the globe, as Hare Krishna devotees hit the road to spread a message about the rewards to be had from “simple living and high thinking”, Yashoda, a devotee for more than 35 years, said.

“Less is more – you have more time if you’re not involved so much in chasing economic rewards. Everything we need is right here.”

Rural hospitals worse off

The impact of accrued annual leave is greater on smaller hospitals compared to their larger counterparts, says Labour health spokeswoman Annette King.

Her comments come after information obtained by the Labour Party showed staff at 18 of the 20 district health boards (DHBs) were owed in excess of eight million hours in annual leave as of June 2015.

Ms King said she was “staggered” at the extent of the hours.

Lieu and long-service leave balances remain high at Ashburton Hospital, due to the limitations of providing cover for shifts and public holidays.

While the Canterbury District Health Board could not provide up-to-date figures yesterday, in November the Guardian reported approximately 40,000 to 50,000 hours of long-service leave were accrued each month and 10,000 to 15,000 lieu hours.

Of this, only around 45 per cent of long service leave had been taken and 70 per cent of lieu hours.

The potential consequences of high annual leave totals at smaller hospitals was of concern to Ms King.

“The impact on small hospitals probably is greater in many ways because they don’t have the capacity to do the cover that you could probably get in some of the bigger hospitals,” she said.

Not only was she worried about the health of the staff, but also their ability to keep going without the breaks and leave they were entitled to.

Annette King “It doesn’t matter if you are a politician or a frontline nurse, you’ve got to have a break for your own health.”

While Ms King said she understood it was not an easy thing for DHBs to address, the issue was amplified by a lack of funding.

Ms King said over 70 per cent of the costs needed to run a hospital were staff-related. “[DHBs] are trying to do the best they can.”

In order to fix the issue Health Minister Jonathan Coleman needed to face facts and acknowledge the huge pressure on the health workforce, Ms King said.

The health system needs to be allocated sufficient funds in this year’s Budget announcement otherwise there will be bigger issues around a lack of services, longer waitlists and staffing, she said.

A spokeswoman for Dr Coleman declined to comment saying it was an “operational matter”.

Ashburton’s real estate agents did brisk business in the weeks leading up to Christmas as they signed deals on 52 houses.

Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures for the month show house sale numbers were up more than 23 per cent on the same month in 2014, the sharp-

est volume increase for any area in Canterbury. Volumes were down, however, on November when 60 properties changed hands.

Houses in the district had a median sales price of $327,250 in December, down from $330,000 in December last year, but up $7000 on November’s median.

REINZ regional director Jim Davis said that the Christchurch and greater Canterbury market

had largely been flat as the year wrapped up. There were indications that home buyers were anticipating prices could fall this year, he said.

“That does mean that some buyers are holding back purchase decisions in the hope of a better deal in the future,” Mr Davis said.

Lantern festival for Mid Canty?

If Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive Bruce Moffat has his way, Ashburton will stage a festival that could next year see valuable tourism dollars coming into the district courtesy of the growing numbers of Chinese travellers.

Chinese tourists were simply passing through the Ashburton District because there was no obvious reason for them to stop, he said, but with the increase in flights from China into Christchurch, there was a market just waiting to be captured.

“We have to come up with innovative ways of ensuring we get our share of that market.”

One signature event could be all that was needed to secure a small piece of that market, Mr Moffat said.

He’s keen to see Ashburton hold a Chinese Lantern Festival in the Ashburton Domain.

Rather than create a new event, he believes there could be advantages for organisers of the Christchurch event if they could be encouraged to bring their festival south.

The city’s event displays hundreds of coloured lanterns imported from China along with Asian food and craft stalls, fireworks and entertainment. This year’s event is being held on Feburary 27 and 28. “If we could do it this way, the costs associated with it may not be very high.

It would be magic and we’d have something very special here for tourists and for locals.”

With the success of the first venture out of Christchurch to Ashburton by the World Buskers’ Festival this week, Mr Moffat said the platform had been laid for Ashburton to be an additional venue for other signature events.

“It could just be as simple as us saying to them, have you thought of doing this and when you do they’re often keen.”

Five minutes of fun costs ratepayers again and again

It might seem like a few minutes of harmless fun, but every time Ashburton’s town centre water feature is filled with detergent, the clean-up job costs ratepayers hundreds of dollars.

But the costs don’t end there, said Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin.

The accumulative impact of foaming agents on the water feature’s pumping system is significantly shortening its life and increasing the risk of unbudgeted

spending on replacement equipment.

Mr Askin has lost count of the times he’s had to divert staff from other work to clean up the effects of a foaming incident that provided a few minutes of fun for someone – usually under cover of darkness.

Each event might carry a several hundred dollar clean-up bill, but multiply that by the dozens of events that occur each year and the costs mount.

The latest incident on Tuesday night was spotted by Talbot Security staff who turned the fountain

off. A number of CCTV cameras are operating in this area.

“What people who do this don’t realise is that it ultimately costs the ratepayers’ money to clean it up.

“The chemical we have to use isn’t cheap and it takes time that we have to divert from other work,” Mr Askin said.

People were quick to complain if they thought maintenance on the district’s parks and reserves was falling behind schedule, but incidents such as the fountain clean up meant other scheduled work was not being done, he said.

Children raise funds to help other children

A group of Methven children are doing their part for Canterbury youth going through a tough time.

Methven childcare educator Sue Duff is leading a band of tiny tots in raising funds for the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Service.

Ms Duff said she was made aware that the service was in need of help through a friend and with the help of others in the community decided to go ahead with a fundraiser.

“We decided to ear-tag something we can actually do so the kids can do something themselves.”

It was very well fundraising but it was important how it was done and where it went, she said.

The group planted lily bulbs, kindly donated by Van Zanteen which they will sell off for $10 a bunch.

Planted in Methven’s “secret garden” back in October, the lilies should be really in a fortnight or so.

Ms Duff said the aim of the fundraiser was to support people through their active cancer treatment.

“The kids are understanding they are growing [them] for other children.”

Two collisions in eight hours Two vehicle collisions occurred in rural Mid Canterbury over an eight-hour period.

St John Ashburton sent two ambulances to the first crash which was a single vehicle collision on Ealing Road near the Rangitata Highway at 10.51pm on Tuesday.

The vehicle had gone off the road and into a fence. A male patient was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

The second was a minor single vehicle collision which occurred after the car went off the road on Isleworth Road at 6.53am yesterday.

The male occupant was not injured.

St John busier than ever in 2015

St John Ashburton had an eventful year in 2015, attending more than 5500 incidents in the Mid Canterbury district.

An increase of eight per cent from the previous year, it resulted in 2015 being one of the branch’s busiest years.

St John Mid Canterbury’s newly appointed territory manager Ian Rex said the rise was primarily due to the area’s rapid growth rate.

“The area continues to grow and attract more of the population from Christchurch and the rest of the country,” he said.

There are eight paid staff and 16 volunteers at St John Ashburton, and St John operate two ambulances – two

during the day and one at night.

Where possible St John aim to have a paid staff member on every call-out, as well as a volunteer.

August was the busiest month of the calendar year, with a total of 571 incidents requiring ambulance response.

This was followed closely

by May which recorded 495 call-outs.

Mr Rex said to help with attending and classifying calls a telephone triage system is used. The classification scale ranges from purple (cardiac or respiratory arrest) events to grey (telephone triage appropriate).

In 2015 48 per cent of the total number of incidents were triaged as purple or red

(immediately life threatening), up two per cent from the last year.

The main reason for emergency call-outs were GP referrals (19.2 per cent), chest pain (9.5 per cent) falls/back injuries (9.2 per cent) and breathing problems (8.5 per cent).

Traffic related incidents and crashes represented only 4.5 per cent of the total emergency calls.

With St John’s workload increasing year on year, Mr Rex said it was important to explore better ways to meet demand.

He hoped to better aid the deployment of St John’s resources to further develop the skills, satisfaction and safety of both St John staff and patients.

Three people have been left traumatised after being targeted in an aggravated robbery.

The incident happened at a Tuckers Rd address in Northcote, Christchurch, at around 9.30pm on Tuesday, police said.

The three victims are being supported by police and Victim Support.

“This is a traumatic event and this sort of offending is unacceptable,” Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said.

carried out yesterday.

“Indications are this has been a targeted crime and police are following a strong line of inquiry. However, police are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Tuckers Road area and saw two males running from the vicinity.”

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of Greymouth toddler Leith Hutchison in April.

Leith died on April 21 after suffering a serious head injury.

Yesterday, Tasman District Crime Manager Detective Inspector Paul Borrell said that the arrest came after a “comprehensive and intensive” nine-month criminal investigation. A family spokesperson issued a statement that read: “The past months have been harrowing for myself and the rest of my family. I am relieved that someone has today been brought before the courts.” The arrested man appeared in the Greymouth District Court today where he was remanded in custody to appear at the Christchurch High Court on February 12. He was granted name suppression.

Joyriders arrested Two Christchurch men have been arrested after a joyride in a stolen car. Police arrested the two men aged 28 and 22 after a short pursuit of a stolen red Subaru Impreza station wagon in Cashmere at about 11.30am yesterday. Police stopped the car by using road spikes at the intersection of Colombo Street and Tennyson Street, Detective Sergeant Nicola Reeves said. “The driver and passenger were arrested after a short foot-chase.” A number of items were also seized from the car, she said. The 28-year-old was charged with unlawfully being in a motor vehicle and the 22-year-old was charged with reckless driving and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Farmers resilient in face of slump

Confidence in the Mid Canterbury dairy industry remains high despite speculation Fonterra may drop the forecast pay-out to a low of $4 per kilogram of milksolids on the back of another poor GlobalDairyTrade auction.

Coupled with the auction result, North Island based Open Country Dairy – New Zealand’s second largest dairy company – advised suppliers they were decreasing their pay-out to between $4 and $4.30 per kilogram of milksolids, triggering a pessimistic reaction nationwide yesterday.

However, Mid Canterbury

commentators remained optimistic of the long-term outlook for dairying in the area with ANZ Mid Canterbury commercial and agri-relationship manager Mark Grenside saying the bank was still “confident” in the sector.

Mr Grenside said any pay-out under $5 per kg/ms meant the majority of dairy farmers were losing money but the bank remained sympathetic and always had buffers in place when lending so there was “tolerance” in order to get through dips in commodity cycles.

“We don’t use the highest milk price or the lowest interest rate (when lending) … we build in

buffers. The reality is that businesses succeed in good and bad times.”

Mr Grenside said the bank looked to farmers to plan and ask for help to get them through the tougher times.

Fonterra supplier and Ealing dairy farmer Mark Slee said farmers just had to “ride out” the dip in prices.

He too was optimistic on the future of dairying.

“I think the fundamentals haven’t changed. There is still plenty of demand out there and the world still needs feeding.”

However, farmers needed to continue to question if they were

resilient and work out what they could do in the future differently as it would happen again.

It was difficult to predict if Fonterra’s forecast pay-out would be reduced, he said.

“It depends on what happens in Europe and how much they ramp up production. Long-term the pay-out won’t jump back to the $8 kg/ms level we’ve seen in the past. It will be more around $6.”

Mr Slee said farm owners needed to take responsibility for lower order sharemilkers and contract milkers who were vulnerable at this time.

“It’s a partnership isn’t it? You

want your sharemilkers to do well … maybe there’s a minimum we have to look at to make sure they are not getting into financial stress.”

Grow Mid Canterbury CEO Rob Brawley said he would be concerned as to the effect on the local economy if the dairy recovery was pushed out for another year.

Although the dairy slump had been felt in Mid Canterbury, Mr Brawley believed the district had fared better than other areas of New Zealand.

“The feedback I’ve had from Southland and the Waikato is that the effect on supporting industries has been very severe.”

Buskers festival an out and out success

Despite the bad weather crowds packed into the Ashburton College auditorium to catch the final World Buskers Festival roadshow event on Tuesday night.

Sharon Mahoney and her alter ego Miss Tallulah, Zane, Degge and Imogen from the Biggest Little Circus trio, Eloise Green AKA Hula Queen and AD DJ dazzled crowds with their daring acts.

Festival director Glen Pickering said overall the roadshow’s stop in Ashburton was hugely successful.

While the event was forced indoors at the last minute due to the abysmal weather, the shows still drew a large crowd, he said.

“We weren’t sure what to expect but it was amazing we had the numbers come out.”

“The night-time crowd was full, the performers said the night-

time crowd was fantastic just like the daytime crowd.”

Mr Pickering said shows in areas such as Timaru were also affected by the weather but spirits were not dampened and crowds were of a similar size.

It was not the most ideal way to start the festival because the performers could not showcase themselves in the way they intended but it was a nice “soft start”, he said.

Due to the positive response the roadshow had every intention of returning next year, Mr Pickering said.

The festival was a huge supporter of Canterbury and the roadshow was a great way to showcase the talent that was usually confined to Christchurch city.

It’s also a really wonderful way to allow people from smaller areas, like Ashburton, to get in on the action, he said.

Extra stalls confirmed for Waitangi on East This year’s Waitangi on East festival will be bigger and better, according to organiser Carol Johns.

With 50 stall sites signed up the merchandise and craft sales event will take up three CBD blocks – one more than last year.

“We’ve had a lot of interest –

last year we were down for some reason, but almost all the sites are booked out already,” Mrs Johns said.

Social media pages appear to have done the trick in ramping up interest in the Waitangi Day festival, which runs in conjunc-

tion with the Multicultural Bite festival, also held on East Street on February 6.

Mrs Johns said a lot of local people will be marketing their wares at this year’s festival, and there will also be some new stalls.

“Waitangi on East seems to at-

tract more locals than Boulevard Day,” she said. “The difference is more people are off work over the long weekend.”

But wherever the stallholders come from visitors to this year’s event can be assured of a wide range of quality items for sale.

“This has also been a person quest to find my own strength and develop my faith, by sharing my philosophy and eastern faith with those from western faiths.”

It is not the first such pilgrimage he has undertaken. Twentyfive years ago Yashoda, along with other devotees, walked 5000km with two oxen pulling a colonial wagon, passing through Ashburton on a quest to promote peace and spirituality.

Both walks draw on an ancient Indian tradition of walking to draw attention to a message, which is similar to the Maori concept of hikoi, Yashoda said. But from here on in he will be making the journey to Northland on his own.

“This has been part of my journey. The horse has been fantastic but I believe ‘less is more’ so from here I will be travelling as a walking monk,” he said. In July he hopes to meet up with other devotees to celebrate the milestone.

Samson’s owner Sue Bailey has made a pilgrimage of her own to see how her horse was holding up.

She now lives in Canada, but imported Samson from the UK, about 10 years ago.

“Gypsy cobs are a type rather than a breed,” she said. “Gypsies bred them by crossing a shire (horse) with a pony to get a stockier animal which didn’t require as much feeding – they were bred for strength.”

It is Ms Bailey’s first trip back to New Zealand in seven years, although she keeps close tabs on Samson and has been very supportive of Yashoda’s mission.

“It’s lovely to see Samson doing his proper job again,” she said.

Ashburton vet Glenn Beeman also paid Samson a visit yesterday to check his general health and take care of his dental needs before any decisions are made about his next adventure.

The man shot dead at a Sydney police station after he confronted officers with a large knife was a New Zealander. David Petersen was shot by police once in the shoulder after he walked into the Quakers Hill station in Sydney on Tuesday brandishing a knife. Petersen reportedly threatened officers and started to scream incomprehensibly.

After Petersen was shot officers gave him CPR but he could not be revived. Petersen lived less than a kilometre from the police station.

He was shot by a police officer with 24 years’ experience. His motivation for coming to the station with the weapon is still under investigation.

High water surrounding Ashburton’s dwindling black-billed gull colony is threatening late nesting birds and their chicks.

The majority of the critically endangered birds at the colony have resettled in safer breeding rounds at the Rangitata River mouth but a small number remain at the original site below the State Highway One bridge.

Forest and Bird Ashburton branch chairperson Edith Smith said the Ashburton breeding ground had already become unsafe due to a proliferation of yellow lupins restricting the nesting areas, predators and vehicles.

The rising water is now creating more of a problem to the already endangered birds.

The older chicks in the colony will be fine because they are about to fledge and will move to higher ground but the younger ones will have difficulty escaping rising water, she said.

‘Jihadi John’ dead – Isis

BY KARLIS SALNA Islamic State has confirmed the notorious executioner known as “Jihadi John” is dead, while also calling for more attacks in the West including in Australia.

The terror group, in the latest issue of its online magazine Dabiq, has confirmed the British national Mohammed Emwazi known as “Jihadi John” was killed in November in a drone strike in Raqqa, northern Syria.

Islamic State also calls for more attacks in the West naming Australia as a target pointing to the deadly assault in December in San Bernardino, California, by married couple Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik.

“May Allah accept the sacrifices of our noble brother Syed Rizwan Farook and his blessed wife, accept them among the shuhada (martyred), and use their deeds as a means to awaken more Muslims in America, Europe, and Australia,” Islamic State said.

‘Jihadi John’ is dead according to the Islamic State’s online Magazine Dabiq.

“While many continue to do so by undertaking hijrah (migration) to the Islamic State, others do so by defiantly terrorizing the crusaders in their very strongholds.”

Farook and Malik killed 14 people and wounded more than 20 others in the December 2 attack. They were later

killed in a shootout with police.

The confirmation of the death of Emwazi, who beheaded hostages in videos published by the terror group, comes two months after US authorities announced they were confident he had been killed.

Islamic State said Emwazi

was killed on November 12 when the vehicle he was in was hit by an unmanned drone “destroying the car and killing him instantly”.

Identified by Islamic State as Abu Muharib al-Muhajir, it referred to him as making “headlines around the world as Jihadi John”.

“His harshness towards the kuffar (non-Muslim) was manifested through deeds that enraged all the nations,” it said.

Emwazi, a computer programming graduate, was born in Kuwait to Iraqi parents and moved to Britain in 1993.

The 27-year-old first appeared in a video in August 2014 which showed the beheading of American journalist James Foley.

He participated in several more similar videos, during which he was typically clad entirely in black, including balaclava.

As a high-profile player in the Isis propaganda machine, Emwazi had become a top target for US and British intelligence agencies.

Captured Americans finally released from Iran Pale but smiling, former US Marine Amir Hekmati recounted how disbelief turned to joy when he and three fellow Americans realised that they were being released as part of a deal with Iran and reunited with their families after spending years in Iranian prison.

Speaking publicly for the first time since being allowed to leave Iran in a prisoner swap on Sunday, Hekmati said the sudden end to his fouryear ordeal still seemed surreal. Convicted by an Iranian court of spying and sentenced to death in 2012, he was later given a 10-year sentence on a lesser charge after a retrial.

“I was at a point where I had just sort of accepted the fact that I was going to be spending 10 years in prison, so this was a surprise and I just feel truly blessed to see my government

do so much for me and the other Americans,” Hekmati told reporters outside the US military’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre in Germany, where he was taken for treatment.

There was no advance warning of his release, he added.

“They just came one morning and said ‘pack your things’.”

The 32-year-old says he and his fellow prisoners endured repeated delays until they were allowed to board a Swiss government plane. But they weren’t able to relax until the jet had left Iranian airspace, after which “champagne bottles were popped” and veal and chocolates were served, he said.

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump received a key endorsement yesterday from conservative heavyweight Sarah Palin, giving the billionaire businessman a potential boost with some voters less than two weeks before voting begins with the Iowa caucuses.

“Media heads are spinning,” Palin said after taking the stage at a Trump rally at Iowa State University. “This is going to be so much fun.”

She said that, with Trump as president, America would no longer apologise.

“No more pussy-footing around,” Palin said, adding that Trump would allow the military do its job and destroy the Islamic State group. “He’s going rogue left and right. That’s why he’s doing so well.”

“I am greatly honoured to receive Sarah’s endorsement,”

Trump said in a statement announcing the support of the former Alaska governor and former running mate of Sen. John McCain in his 2008 bid for the White House.

“She is a friend, and a highquality person whom I have great respect for. I am proud to have her support.”

Palin will also be joining Trump at a rally in Oklahoma.

Trump’s national political director Michael Glassner previously worked with Palin, who was a virtual newcomer to the national political arena when McCain named her as his running mate. She has since risen to prominence as one of the most outspoken conservatives in the party.

Earlier yesterday, Trump received an endorsement from the daughter of movie star John Wayne.

Chocolate-covered fries Fans will either love or hate McDonald’s latest menu item – chocolate-covered fries.

The fast food giant has announced the McChoco Potato will hit participating stores in Japan on January 26 so New Zealand fans will have to be prepared to travel to try them. The dish will be drenched in both cacao-flavoured chocolate and white milk chocolate for a combination that “creates wonderful salty and sweet harmonious taste,” the fast food giant said.

‘Oscars gone backwards’ George Clooney has joined director Spike Lee in calling for affirmative action in Hollywood to address racial disparity.

The absence of black and ethnic minority actors from every acting nomination, for the second year running, has led to Lee calling for an Oscars boycott. Civil rights leader Al Sharpton urged Americans to “tune out” of the awards telecast. George Clooney and British actor David Oyelowo also called for changes to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversee the Academy Awards. “If you think back 10 years ago, the Academy was doing a better job,” Clooney told Hollywood trade paper Variety.

Pam causes a stir Former Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson has triggered scenes of chaos in France’s parliament as journalists fought and shoved to hear her campaign for a ban on the force-feeding of ducks and geese for foie gras. A photographer and a cameraman came to blows as those in the media scrum struggled to get shots of Anderson at a news conference. Some 25 other journalists were left stuck outside for want of sufficient space for them in the room. “As a Canadian, I am ashamed by the brutal clubbing of baby seals and thus I have empathy for many of the French citizens who also experience both shame and sadness at the misery suffered by these very sociable birds,” Anderson said.

Caitlyn Jenner is releasing a memoir about her transition from male to female. The US reality star is reuniting with journalist Buzz Bissinger, the writer who penned the Vanity Fair article that introduced the transgender former Olympian as Caitlyn in June.

“Things have been moving so quickly that it will be nice to slow things down a bit and take the proper time to reflect on this journey,” a statement from Jenner reads.

“I made it clear to her (Caitlyn) that everything has to be on the table, nothing can be left out, and I’m going to be interviewing dozens of other people,” Bissinger said.

Ashburton sitting on a tourism goldmine Sue Newman

ith Chinese tourists set to become our fastest growing asset in the tourism sector, it’s imperative the Ashburton District positions itself to snare a share of their spend.

We might not have the big ticket assets (apart from Mt Hutt Skifield) that some parts of the country are fortunate to have, but we do have special qualities that make us stand out from the pack. We just need to recognise these and market them.

As flights into Christchurch from China increase in number, so too do the opportunities for this district to carve itself a special niche on their must-do list. Research shows the Chinese traveller usually has quite specific requirements. They have limited time and along with a unique Kiwi experience, they want a little bit of home in the way of food and signage.

Currently we’re missing out on this new stream of revenue and we’ll continue to miss out until we give this lucrative group of tourists what they’re looking for.

It’s a market that’s almost without limits and it’s vital we make it onto at least some of those itineraries.

The Chinese traveller is now as likely to be found free-wheeling their way around New Zealand as they are to be sitting in coaches and being ferried from one stop to the next.

Many, however, come with their itinerary mapped out and if we’re not on the list we’ll continue to be part of the landscape they pass through between Christchurch and the next well promoted tourist spot – probably Tekapo.

When it comes to attractions, it’s easy to overlook what we have on our doorstep – the one thing the Chinese travellers want, the unique rural Kiwi experience.

Apparently there is high demand by travellers for accommodation on farms and no one is better placed than this district to meet that demand. We just need the will to do so. Farms, rural businesses, rural processing plants, they’re our tourism goldmine.

Hundreds of thousands of people come to New Zealand each year with money to spend. We need to make sure we’re ready and willing to take that money by providing the service they want.

If we don’t someone else most definitely will.

T

he moment of truth is almost upon Donald Trump, (DT), the would-be 45th President of the United States of America. The Iowa and New Hampshire Primaries (February 1 and February 9 respectively) will be the first of a long line of similar assessments of opinion in the coming months when Mr Trump – and the still numerous other republican candidates for the top job – actually expose themselves to the public and try to turn the frenzied rhetoric of the past months into real votes.

We shall then get some idea of just how genuine a candidate Donald Trump is or whether his outrageous political approach has been merely a raucous flash in the pan full of traditional sound and fury but signifying nothing.

Should he manage to take his campaign beyond the brash and the far-fetched to a level where he becomes a serious possibility as the next occupier of the White House – Mrs Clinton notwithstanding – there is going to have to be some serious re-thinking about the political process that has prevailed in Washington and elsewhere for the many generations past.

In other words, has Donald Trump broken the political mould once and for all so that in future candidates with any hope of success will have to adopt a much more confrontational approach to the business of winning votes and so, elections?

A nine-day wonder or the start of something big? If it proves to be the latter and Mr Trump enters that famous “Presidential Palace” – or simply becomes the official Republican nominee even if he then loses to Mrs Clinton on Tuesday, November 8 – things ain’t ever going to be the same again.

It will have proven the demise of much of the paraphernalia on which all candidates of every political hue have relied since the democratic parliamentary system became the chosen method of government throughout most of the world. Its effect here in Aotearoa, New Zealand, might be

Candidates could feel inspired to follow the campaign methods so successfully employed by, then, President Trump. And chief amongst these methods seems to be the overwhelming attraction to voters of Mr Trump’s determination to tell it how it is, to stop pussy-footing around with the hated doctrine of political correctness and articulate the people’s prejudices in technicolour, which less robust politicians are reluctant to exploit.

He seems also to have managed perfectly well without the usual team of paparazzi, pollsters, pundits and Press persons.

The fact that he is a legendary, multi-millionaire with a quirky head of golden hair may have had something to do with that. He hardly needs name recognition.

Thus DT has felt free to make his outrageous statements, such as promising to put up a high wall of enormous length to keep out illegal immigrants from Mexico – as well as (somehow) getting the Mexicans to pay for it. That was his first sally into the world of saying what the people want to hear and he soon followed that one with an undertaking to ban most Muslims from entering the United States.

Apparently emboldened by the popular response to such outlandish policies, he has widened his scatter-gun approach to in-

clude the vilification of fellow Republican candidates and, as well, and in particular, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic front runner.

Of course, much of Mr Trump’s intemperate and personal language smacks a bit of the robust politicking of 18th and 19th century England but since then we have become accustomed to a less inflammatory attitude, which often leaves the modern voter unconvinced and frustrated, wishing the contender would really say what’s on his mind without concern for possible hurt feelings or media reaction.

If it all turns out to be a winning formula it will, too, become an enormously tempting way of conducting a political crusade and may well be taken up by Kiwi candidates next year even though they may, as yet, lack the money and the mana being offered by Donald Trump.

Of course, and more likely, Mr Trump’s cause may well be swallowed up by the many ordinary voters who have so far avoided the temptation to board the Trump bandwagon. Chaotic claims rarely bring permanent happiness.

I suppose Winston Peters would be our nearest answer to Donald Trump though he won’t thank me for suggesting it, and he also has a real head of luxuriant locks. He does, though, have a welcome tendency to tell it as it is usually to the considerable satisfaction

of the older generation who are tired of our representatives hiding behind unacceptable forms of words rather than being up front with them.

However, I’m sure Winston will not descend to the sort of personal mud-slinging as practised, as a matter of course, by The Trump. As far as I know, neither is Mr Peters in the same wealth league as tycoon Trump. Winston, though, has political skills light years ahead of the American’s whose skills, so called, in that department are strictly confined to those of the bully and the bigot.

Riding high in Northland after his famous victory there last year, Winston must still have dreams of ending his career at the very top of the famous greasy pole.

What could just be said; Winston and Donald have the knack of responding to what they perceive to be the feelings of the people rather than letting the nation be run unquestioningly by those legendary faceless bureaucrats, who can be found at the epicentre of most governments and are certainly not answerable to the voters at large.

Very soon, we shall begin to see whether the business of voting is about to undergo a significant change.

I leave you to name other Kiwis, current politicians or outsiders like Mr Trump, who may be inspired to follow the lead of the mega American magnate.

Smelter looks safe

BY PATTRICK SMELLIE The future of the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter appears to have become a little more secure, with the Rio Tinto-controlled plant thought to be roughly breaking even, largely thanks to a lower New Zealand dollar and the fact the price of alumina has fallen more than that of the finished product.

Those are the key conclusions of a research note issued to clients by broking firm First NZ Capital in an assessment of the prospects for the New Zealand electricity sector this year.

“Tiwai remains a key uncertainty for the industry,” the note says, with options to cancel existing electricity contracts triggered in April and in January next year ahead of possible closure in early 2018 or a staged reduction in output.

“Surprisingly perhaps, we think the risk of an early 2018 exit remains low despite bombed out aluminium prices.”

The smelter uses 13 per cent of all the electricity generated in New Zealand, with its closure creating potential both for oversupply and the early closure of more fossil fuel-fired power stations than has already been announced.

it sees “wiggle room from low alumina prices and a softer New Zealand dollar”, and the potential to defer capital expenditure from usual levels of around US$90 per tonne to around US$60 per tonne.

“Our figures suggest it’s possible Tiwai is operating at a cash neutral margin.

“Significant New Zealand dollar appreciation and even lower aluminium prices would need

to transpire before we would become more concerned about exit risk.

“At present, both seem unlikely.”

Credit Suisse economists have lowered their forecast for premium aluminium prices to an average US$1660 a tonne in 2016, rising gradually to US$1970 per tonne by 2019, against an assumed cost of production per tonne at Tiwai of US$1650 per tonne, including US$60 per tonne of annual capex.

Capital Express links Wellington-Canberra Singapore Airlines has just confirmed it will start flying between Wellington and Canberra, launching in September.

The airline will link the two cities for the first time with a four times a week service that will fly on to Singapore.

It is the first time the two Australasian cities have been linked and is a coup for both as they expand international operations.

Singapore Airlines has dubbed the service the Capital Express and it is aimed at the lucrative government and corporate market more likely to fly in business class seats and the leisure market, particularly Kiwis who want to connect with the airline’s network in Asia.

The new flights will be operated using 266-seat retrofitted Boeing 777-200 aircraft, that has 38 business class seats and 228 economy class seats.

Singapore Airlines executive vice president commercial, Mak Swee Wah, said his airline was “extremely proud” to be the first airline to provide non-stop flights between the New Zealand and Australian capital cities.

“New Zealand is a very important part of our global route network and is a popular destination for visitors from around the globe.

“New Zealanders are also renowned worldwide for their enthusiasm for travel,” he said.

New capital fund The New Zealand Venture Investment Fund has committed around $11 million to become a cornerstone investor in a new joint New Zealand-Taiwan venture capital fund, the Global from Day One Fund 11.

Recent rainfall has done a lot to lift spirits in the dairy sector, but yesterday’s Global Dairy Trade auction serves as a reminder that recovery is a long way off.

The average price has dropped 3 per cent to $US2405 a tonne over this month’s two auctions, but regardless of the price, there will be tough times ahead for both farmers and other businesses reliant on the rural sector, Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy spokesperson, Jessie Chan-Dorman, said.

“I don’t think the wider business community has felt the full brunt of the downturn yet,” she said.

“It started the spring just been but it could get even tougher this spring coming because people won’t have any reserves.

“Even if the price improves, it could well be 18 months or two years before things start to improve.”

Despite the gloomy predictions, most of those in the industry have remained positive about the long-term prospects, but it’s shaping up to be a tough year.

“We are all going to have to be very careful, regardless of what the price does there is a long recovery ahead.

“People need to look after each other, plan for the worst and hope for the best,” Ms Chan-Dorman said.

In particular newcomers to the industry and younger staff members are likely to require extra support.

“If you’ve got a sharemilker who started during the past two seasons they will be facing tough times for a few years to come,” she said.

The Federated Farmers’ message has been to keep communication lines open.

“Surviving will be all about communication – having those open conversations and remaining open to negotiation,” Ms Chan-Dorman said.

“Yes you have a contract, but in testing conditions like these it’s about negotiating an outcome with something in it for both parties. This could well be different to what the original contract

TINWALD SALE Prime lamb prices have remained steady over several weeks.

At this week’s Tinwald sheep sale, heavy woolly lambs made $95-$106, medium weights $87-$95 and lighter lambs $70-$82.

Heavy woolly ewes realised $67-$74, mediums $60-$65 and lighter weights $45-$54.

The recent rainfall encouraged a bigger gallery to the store lamb pens, with the promise of increased pasture growth.

Crossbred male stores fetched $56-$65.

A total yarding of more than 6000 at last week’s 14th annual Surrey Hills onfarm lamb sale, also attracted a strong contingent of buyers. Prices were similar to those achieved at last year’s sale. Top romney crypt lambs realised $95, the next cut was $75 and the main line of romney crypts sold for $47-$69. Romney ewe lambs fetched up to $84 with the balance ranging from $47$68. Southdown-cross lambs sold from $64-$100.

While some contracts for next season will already be signed up, a lot will be under negotiation over the next few months. “Again, both parties should be aiming to find a win-win situation,” she said. “I am hearing that banks are looking more at putting minimum returns

in contracts.” While prices remain depressed, the current el nino weather pattern has delivered rain alleviating fears of another long dry summer impacting on production figures.

“It will keep the pasture going for a while – this is actually one of the greenest summers I’ve seen around here,” Ms Chan-Dorman said.

Focus: the centre of D

espite its close styling similarities to the previous model, much has changed in the latest Focus hatch

range.

Externally the most obvious difference is the new nose with the bonnet scooped around the smart looking new trapezoidal grille.

It has a well balanced and attractive look, and in its very noticeable Mustard Olive livery, received lots of favourable comments.

The larger 17-inch alloy wheels and subtle, sports body kit set it off nicely.

Unseen, yet very significant are the new, punchy, yet thrifty 1.5 litre turbo-petrol engine matched up to an also new, conventional six-speed auto.

This engine produces 132kW and 240Nm of torque.

Take a moment to reflect on those figures, for although its only 1.5 litres it produces pretty much similar power and torque to many non-turbo 2.5 litre petrol engines.

And the Focus’ maximum torque of 240Nm is on hand right through from 1600 to 5000, just where it is needed for most driving situations.

So with the slick six-speed auto being very well-matched to the engine, this car’s definitely a pleasantly zippy performer when left to do its own thing.

And even more so when you use the paddle shifters.

Do this and it can not only sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds, but you are rewarded with some neat sounding, exhaust harmonics.

A combined overall fuel use figure of 6.7L/100km is quoted.

In this respect, while 91 can be used, they recommend using premium for optimum performance.

Ford has gone for high equipment levels right across the whole Focus hatch range.

Of course this further increases as you progress through the Trend, Sport, and Titanium models.

But for all versions, the dash and controls are a revelation being very nicely presented and easy to use.

Particularly so the neat and intuitive SYNC2 infotainment system with its

high resolution, 8-inch touch-screen.

This is very easy to use, with its colour-coded corners to select whichever function you require, including phone, or the standard for all models, dual zone climate control and sat-nav, together with the sound system, which in the Sport is a 9-speaker Sony system.

The combination of this new dash, together with the look and feel of the various other materials used in the cabin give it both considerable verve and a smart, quality feel.

We found the front seats both supportive and comfortable.

I didn’t travel in the rear, but the space therein appears to be much as for previous Focus models, adequate, but not generous.

All previous Focus models have have been set up to provide a safe but rewarding to drive from a handling perspective, and this certainly hasn’t changed with this one.

The steering is nicely weighted and accurate and the retuned suspension is set up for pretty much an ideal ride/ handling equation.

So the Sport’s ride around town is firm, but comfortable and its a treat in the winding stuff!

Lewis Dray maintained his place at the summit of the 250 Production Series points table with three second place finishes in round two of the New Zealand Superbike Championships in Invercargill last weekend.

The 19-year-old has been in sterling form in 2016 with three

podium finishes in round one at Ruapuna, where he took two wins and one second place behind Aucklander Jacob Stroud on January 9 and 10.

Dray said he was pleased to be on the podium in Invercargill, having never competed at the Teretonga racing circuit before.

“I’d never seen the track before.

“I really only expected to get top five but to get on the podium in second was great,” he said.

Dray now sits 29 points ahead of his closest rival, Stroud, who won all three races in Southland, but the Ashburton rider is determined to widen the gap at the top this weekend at round three in Timaru.

“We’ll be looking to get 25

points at the weekend.

“Twenty-nine points is a good gap, it’s comfortable and gives me a bit of leeway, but I would like to take some points back off Jacob (Stroud) so we can try and win the title,” Dray said.

Dray will next be in action in Timaru this weekend, before heading to Hampton Downs for round four.

We hope all of you enjoyed time with family and friends either at home or away and are now returning to normal and starting to think about computers again and what we need to learn for 2016.

■ Ashburton Golf Club Big weekend ahead at the golf club, Saturday we have men’s opening day, playing for the Jim McKenzie memorial trophy, which is a pairs best ball game. Early morning start for the insomniacs or 12 meet for 12.30 start for the normal golfers.

Then at 5pm after results the fun begins for the Property Brokers Shootout Final. We have our 19 finalists, 2 gorgeous girls, 16 hunky men and one demi god.

Local superstar and all round good guy Hamish Niles will auction off all the finalists, and this year promises to be a buyers market. There will be cut price bargain wanna bes and some massively overpriced, never will bes. Then the pressure kicks in, the finalists will go home and try to sleep, knowing that thousands of dollars, will be won and lost on the performance of there well grooved swings.

The mind games then start at 9.30 Sunday morning, with posing and snide remarks around the practice area, then its all on at 10 am for tee off. The winner picks up a club membership for themselves a good pay day for the buyer, and bragging rights for the year.

Get yourself down to the club this weekend, come for a game, come for the fun, or just come to laugh at Paddy walking back down the first after only playing one hole on Sunday.

German factory driver Rene Rast will partner with Garth Tander in the Bathurst 12-hour race, replacing the injured Craig Lowndes. Lowndes is set to undergo surgery after breaking his collarbone during a recreational motorbike accident on Sunday.

Tander said Rast had huge shoes to fill given Lowndes’ experience at Bathurst, but described the 29-year-old as one of Europe’s top GT drivers. “It says a lot about the race now the stature of this event that Audi are prepared to send these types of guys down to do the race,” he said.

Villa, West Brom win Aston Villa forgot their Premier League troubles and moved into the fourth round of the FA Cup with an unconvincing 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in their third round replay yesterday. A 75th minute header from Ciaran Clark and another from Idrissa Gueye settled the tie as Villa set up a home meeting with Manchester City at the end of the month. West Bromwich Albion were also made to battle for victory over lower league opposition, seeing off Bristol City 1-0.

Sharing the Cup The World Cup could be spread across entire regions, emulating the continent-wide 2020 European Championship, if Gianni Infantino wins the FIFA presidential election next month. The UEFA secretary general used his manifesto, published yesterday, to say FIFA should not limit the tournament to be being held in one or two countries. The 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea was the only time the event has been cohosted.

Ronaldo hints at MLS Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is open to the idea of one day playing in Major League Soccer. The three-time World Player of the Year told GQ magazine he does not follow MLS too closely but he has not ruled out adding his name to a growing list of high-profile talents that have moved to the United States in recent years.

“What’s happening there is great, it’s fantastic - maybe in the future will be a good chance for me to play there. You never know, but it’s something interesting,” the Portugal captain said.

In brief Rowers in the medals Ashburton’s rowers produced a fine set of results at the Meridian Canterbury Championships on Lake Ruataniwha last weekend. Veronica Wall’s good form continued with a gold medal in the women’s open single sculls A Final and also won gold in the women’s club single sculls. Aidan Campbell and Harrison Davies took out top spot in the boys’ under 17 double sculls, while Lara Biggs and Mollie Gibson placed second in the girls’ under 17 double sculls. Davies, Johnny Lysaght, Haxby Hefford and Campbell finished just outside the medals in fourth in their boys’ under-16 coxed quad sculls. Matthew Rae produced a solid display to take gold in the men’s club singles sculls B Final and then joined Davies to add another silver medal to the growing Ashburton haul in the men’s club double sculls. Not to be outdone, Charlotte Cox and Wall also collected a silver medal in the women’s club double sculls, before Emma Stagg and Gibson pitched in with a bronze in the women’s novice double sculls.

Aquafest making waves

Lake Hood will host the annual Aquafest event this weekend with waterskiers from far and wide competing at the world ranking, three event tournament.

Board members quit Up to 35 skiers from Marlborough to Southland, including two from the UK, are expected to take to the water with the hope of posting top scores to the New Zealand and world rankings lists.

The majority of skiers will

compete in slalom, trick and jump over two rounds in each event.

Chief judge Janeen Donaldson said she is expecting a tight schedule on both days, and is confident the local contingent of 15 skiers can perform well.

“We’re expecting upwards of 70 pulls each day, which is two full days and we’re after good weather and good scores, the kids here are all after PBs,” she said.

The action will begin at 8am on Saturday and Sunday.

Tennis Australia is on the hunt for three new directors after Janet Young, Peter Armstrong and Kerryn Pratt all tendered their resignations effective immediately. TA president Steve Healy thanked the trio for their longstanding support of Australian tennis, while stressing their decision to quit the board had nothing to do with the corruption scandal dogging the sport. - AAP

Sharapova cruises into third round at Open Maria Sharapova has breezed into the Australian Open third round with a 6-2 6-1 win over Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Souths co-owner Russell Crowe has apologised for berating fiveeighth Luke Keary during a team bonding session last month. Crowe took to social media to say sorry after Seven News reported Keary had stormed out of the session at the actor’s property at Coffs Harbour after being chided for his performance in 2015. It is believed the entire team was criticised, but Keary had been singled out after the boozy session.

Smolda tackling Aussie’s best A series of odd, unrelated incidents have left the plans of some of New Zealand’s best pacers in disarray.

But amid the chaos, Smolda has emerged as the favourite for Saturday night’s $120,000 Ballarat Cup. With millions of dollars worth of races crammed into the next two months, the pieces on the harness-racing chessboard seem to be moving daily as trainers watch each other’s moves as well as strive to get into the best races or lead-up races.

And the latter point is proving easier said than done, with Sky Major now likely to miss next

week’s A$400,000 Victoria Cup because his lead-up race at Alexandra Park in Auckland this Friday didn’t get off the ground.

“We are still looking at going for the Hunter Cup the following week but the Victoria Cup is unlikely now,” said trainer Barry Purdon.

Canterbury star Locharburn had a similar problem, with the A$25,000 Pelorus Classic scheduled for Blenheim tomorrow also canned after not attracting enough entries.

But the strangest reason for missing a race all weekend involves Auckland Cup winner Have Faith In Me, who was set to start

in a A$50,000 four-year-old sprint at Menangle on Saturday until trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen missed the electronic nominations for their team because of technical problems.

Have Faith In Me now has to run top three in a four-year-old race on Saturday week to guarantee a spot in the A$200,000 Chariots of Fire on February 13.

Have Faith In Me won’t be the main focus of the All Stars stable on Saturday, though, as Smolda is likely to start favourite in the Ballarat Cup on a night that also sees Lazarus and exceptional trotter Monbet make their Australian debuts.

Wild Bill eyes Cup Wild Bill’s Gr.2 Wellington Cup bid is back on track after an injury setback threatened to derail plans for a start in Saturday’s Trentham feature. A relieved Joanne Hillis confirmed her stayer’s presence in the Wallaceville Estate-sponsored event after the gelding pulled up well after working at Otaki on Tuesday morning. “I was happy with his gallop so he’ll run and Michael Coleman will be riding him.”- NZME

Smolda has drawn barrier five in the Cup, with Inter Dominion hero Lennytheshark on the second line along with Bling It On. A weakish front line, which includes Mossdale Conner, suggests Smolda has a great chance of working to the lead and winning the first leg of the Victorian open-class triple crown over the next fortnight.

Monbet faces an interesting challenge on Saturday, off a 20m handicap in a heat of the Australasian Trotting Champs against exciting local mate Arboe, with the Victorian TAB opening Monbet at $1.70 in what looks a twohorse race.

Bird to test Black Caps Australia’s selectors will acknowledge that speed isn’t everything by commissioning Jackson Bird to help spearhead their charge for the No.1 Test ranking against New Zealand.

It’s been more than two and a half years since Bird last played a Test match and despite being the Sheffield Shield’s leading wickettaker, he was ignored for selection during the recent home series against the West Indies.

However, the classy right-armer is set to break his drought as he was named in Australia’s 14-man squad to take on the Black Caps in next month’s crunch two-Test tour of NZ. No cricketing nation has ever before held the No.1 spot in all three formats, but a 1-0 triumph for Australia in the land of the long white cloud will be enough for them to achieve groundbreaking history.

England’s crushing defeat of current Test champs South Africa has now opened the door for Steve Smith’s side, but for once speed won’t be the centrepiece of Australia’s attack.

The sudden retirement of Mitchell Johnson and the serious injury suffered by Mitchell Starc sparked a feverish search for the country’s next fast bowling talent, but still no one has announced themselves.

Instead, it’s the ever-consistent record of 29-year-old Bird that cannot be denied.

They even picked Nathan Coulter-Nile (now injured) with no match practice under his belt and called up the Shield’s ninthbest performing fast bowler Scott Boland as back-up to face the Windies, both at the expense of Bird.

However, Bird’s ability to move the ball on seaming wickets – an element Australia lacked on the most recent Ashes – combined with his strong Shield performances for Tasmania will see him finally break the mould.

Bird has taken 22 wickets at an average of 24 runs per scalp this domestic first-class season, and his Test record is also strong – 13 wickets at 23 from three matches.

There is lingering injury doubt over fellow quicks Peter Siddle and James Pattinson meaning Bird is every chance of joining Josh Hazlewood in the XI for the first Test against the Black Caps in Wellington on February 12.

Conditions in New Zealand are tipped to resemble the Ashes part II, with Australia needing to prove they’ve learnt how to handle the seaming UK decks that brought them undone so badly on last year’s disastrous Ashes campaign.

If Hazlewood and Pattinson are fit and ready for the first Test, it would likely leave Bird, Siddle and Boland fighting for the remaining place in the threepronged attack.

Siddle, who has been battling

an ankle injury, will have to prove his fitness in Victoria’s Shield game against Tasmania at the MCG starting on February 3.

Pattinson, has been nursing shin soreness, and may also need to play that match for the Vics.

Elsewhere, selectors may try to get as many Test players as possible into the one-day squad to play three internationals against the Black Caps which will be staged in the direct lead-up to the Tests.

The idea being to get as many players as possible acclimatised to the conditions with no official tour game scheduled.

NSW and West Australian players picked in the Australian squad will feature in a specifically scheduled Shield match to take place in Christchurch from February 3.

After dominant performances against New Zealand and the Windies in the home summer, Australia’s batting line-up is set in concrete – with Joe Burns to open, Usman Khawaja to bat at No.3 and Shaun Marsh to travel as the reserve batsman.

Kiwi cricketers in demand in the counties

The friendly competitiveness with which last year’s touring team played has imbued a belief that any New Zealander’s presence will spread that spirit osmosis-like into their own ranks.

The Black Caps are perfect targets with no international cricket scheduled between April and mid-July.

After that, the future tours programme schedule has them playing from late July to April against Zimbabwe (away), South Africa (home and away), India (away), Bangladesh (home), Pakistan (home) and Australia (away).

Eight Black Caps are signed in various formats across the English season.

They include Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner (Worcestershire), Brendon McCullum and Mitchell McClenaghan (Middlesex), Hamish Rutherford (Derbyshire), Ross Taylor (Sussex), Neil Wagner (Lancashire) and Kane Williamson (Yorkshire).

Luke Ronchi is understood to be in discussions with a county.

Brendon McCullum brought a new style of captaincy to cricket.

McCullum’s team was revered by players, administrators, media and fans in England.

A relatively docile Ashes had pundits querying why New Zealand was allotted only two tests.

New Zealand lost at Lord’s but won at Headingley, their first test victory on English soil in 16 years.

McCullum was unfazed by the Lord’s defeat, adamant his side applied the method which best suited them.

“There’s an element of pride that we continue to play a style

that gives us our greatest chance [of winning].

“There will be times teams can stand up to you and withstand the pressure. You have to doff the cap, say ‘well played’ and make sure next time you go hard again and ask the same question.

“Emotionally, our guys are steady and that’s allowed us to play some good cricket so ‘no knee-jerk reaction’ will be the message to a performance like this because we were pretty good for most of it.”

Win, and you defeat one of the world’s most dashing teams; lose, and you’ve witnessed cricket at a tempo difficult to emulate but spectacular to watch.

Maxwell: more to come Glenn Maxwell’s match-winning performance against India at the MCG is just a sign of things to come, according to Australia vice-captain David Warner. Maxwell guided Australia to a three-wicket win on Sunday with a measured 96-run knock, wrapping up the one-day series in the process. Warner said it was obvious his team-mate had matured as a player. “But I think we’re yet to see his real talent,” he said. “It was great that everyone was able to see that and know what he’s capable of.” Warner said Maxwell had also shown his ability to rack up big scores without taking a risk. The 29-year-old, who was earlier criticised himself for being a risk-taker, believed Maxwell is more than capable of replicating his Twenty20 form in Test cricket.

Up for a new challenge

Volunteer firefighter Rob Markillie is used to pushing himself to the limit, having climbed the 1103 stairs of the Sky Tower three times for charity, while carrying 25kg of equipment.

But this year, the Methven man will take on a different challenge, pitting himself against the elements in the Coast to Coast twoday event.

“I’ve done the Sky Tower Challenge for three years, and it’s just

time now for a different personal challenge,” he said.

Having volunteered on the event’s medical station for half a decade, the 39-year-old is more than familiar with what is often described as a ‘rite of passage’ for multisport athletes.

“I’ve always had my eye on Coast to Coast, it’s drawn me each year,” he said.

“The time came to give it a crack, to get from one side of the country to the other under my own steam would be great.”

Markillie will leave on foot, running 3km inland to his waiting bike and then follow the Taramakau River to the foothills of the Southern Alps, where he will switch his bike for trainers for a 33km run.

Following the lung-busting run, Markillie and the rest of the competitors will camp overnight at Klondyke Corner.

On day two, he will have a short ride before taking on the mighty Waimakariri River for a 70km kayak from the heart of the

Southern Alps to the Canterbury Plains, where he will ride a final 70km to the finish at the New Brighton Pier.

In preparation, Markillie is now upping the intensity of his training schedule with a strict regime on foot, his bike and in the water.

“It’s just trying to balance family life, school holidays, Christmas time and the fire brigade as well,” he said.

“It’s amazing how much time and focus it takes.”

Despite a lack of experience on two wheels and in a kayak, Markillie is determined to make it through the course, even if he crosses the finish line on all fours, and with three Sky Tower Challenges under his belt, not many would bet against him.

“I’ve never done long distant events before, never really cycled or kayaked.

“I‘ve done a bit of cross-country running, so it will be a challenge.

“Even if I crawl across the line, I’ll be really happy.”
