Gallery empty at opening? BY SUSAN SANDYS

The Ashburton Art Gallery collection looks unlikely to be in the new gallery building when it is officially opened next month, after an air-conditioning unit at the $10 million Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre was confirmed as needing to be replaced. The Ashburton District Council yesterday confirmed a new unit was on the way from Italy. It was unlikely to arrive before
the February 14 invitation-only opening by the former Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Chris Finlayson. The Ashburton Museum will open weekdays and weekends from February 15, but art gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani yesterday could not say when the gallery would begin operation or have its collection and exhibitions installed. She expected to discuss this with the gallery’s committee over the next two days. However, she
confirmed that at least two weeks of stable air-conditioning unit data would have to be achieved prior to the gallery’s collection shifting to the building. “It’s very frustrating that we have more delays to deal with,” Ms Khosraviani said. She hoped the gallery’s opening exhibition of New Zealand artists, yet to be announced, would not have to be cancelled and could instead be rescheduled for when the gallery began operation. “We have had shows lined up
since July last year, we have been changing and shifting and rescheduling since then with every delay that we have had; I’m kind of used to changing dates at the moment,” Ms Khosraviani said. “It’s been a long road so hopefully we will see it finished soon.” The gallery’s collection of 2700 works remains at the former gallery in Baring Square.
Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay was not too worried about the official opening going ahead potentially without paintings on the walls and had attended the Simon O’Neill concerts recently where the gallery had been shown to be a marvellous facility. “We are just carrying on as if there is an art gallery up and running.”
