Moffatt: China trip a ‘no-brainer’

Ashburton District councillor Stuart Wilson has questioned the value of the council supporting a trip to China aimed at driving tourism and education growth.

Experience Mid Canterbury general manager Bruce Moffatt and a delegation of Mid Canterbury educational representatives this month returned from the one-week trip to northern China, where they visited schools and officials.

Experience Mid Canterbury is funded to the tune of about $300,000 per year by the council, however, the trip itself cost the council-controlled organisation a mere $2578.48. This was for Moffatt’s expenses including airfares, accommo-

dation, meals, visa and gifts. The council did not contribute any additional funding.

Destinations included Ashburton’s sister city Puyang City, the town’s new friendship city Xianyang, and Chengdu for tourism and official government meetings.

The goal was to drive tourism and international education growth into Mid Canterbury. Families could be encouraged to enrol their children in international programmes here, while their families travelled around Canterbury and beyond.

Moffatt was accompanied by Mount Hutt College deputy principal Kris Canham, Ashburton College international director Michelle Hosking, Ashburton

Borough School international manager Kate Bond, and former Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay, as well as a tour organiser and interpreter.

Moffatt and Canham spoke to a meeting of the full council this month to report on their trip. Canham said it had been good to have the status of representing the district and she was grateful for the council’s support in this regard.

“We found that representing our district was so advantageous to make links via the support of the council,” Canham said.

Debate over power price increase

Ashburton electricity consumers will face a power price hike in the new year, but it will not be hitting the highs tipped by NZ First leader Winston Peters, says lines company EA Networks chief executive Gordon Guthrie.

As the Electricity Authority rewrites the methodology around pricing, it is attempting to iron out inconsistencies across the country and that exercise, Peters has suggested, could see individual consumers facing a 119 per cent increase in their bills.

This would average an increase of $226 per customer.

That figure was way off the mark, Guthrie said.

Ashburton was at odds with much of the country in that its peak consumption, driven by irrigators, was over the summer months, rather than being on the back of home heating in the winter, and that meant the district currently had some of the lowest lines charges in the country, he said.

The current charging regime sees all consumers charged at what is deemed the winter peak consumption rate.

The new methodology will see districts charged according to their individual peak consumption, signalling change for Ashburton.

The figures quoted by Peters are significantly higher than what is likely, Guthrie said.

When the issue was first raised in May, he tipped Ashburton consumers as likely to face an increase of up to $100 a year.

“Yes they’ll be tweaked a little. It depends on how it’s calculated but those figures are far too dramatic.”

If the new charging method is spread across the district the increase would be smaller for domestic users but irrigators would notice an increase, he said.

The four areas quoted by the Electricity Authority as most in need of a more even handed charging regime are Ashburton, Buller, Westland and Northland.

Peters’ figures show Ashburton consumers as being the most affected by the change and he is claiming the new rates are about making consumers pay for the infrastructure Transpower had already built rather than addressing anomalies.

Lights to bring Christmas cheer again Methven granddad Frank Sandys (above) has brought Christmas cheer to Methven for the 10th year in a row this year, going all out to decorate his home with lights. Sandys said up to 100 people per night were coming to view the lights and take a walk around the home throughout the wide range of outdoor displays. Visitors can pay a donation at the gate if they wish, and last year $1300 was raised for the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade. The attraction will be open every night including Christmas until January 4, and Santa Claus himself will be squeezing in a visit to the property on Christmas Eve.

Moffatt: China trip a ‘no-brainer’ From P1 Councillor Wilson questioned the value to the average hardworking ratepayer of Ashburton, with the main advantage being to the district’s tourism industry.

“Why should we expect ratepayers to fund this when the advantage is to one section of our community?” Wilson asked.

Moffatt said it was his job to promote tourism, and tourists spent “handsomely” at a wide range of businesses.

New figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment showed tourism directly contributed $174 million into Mid Canterbury’s GDP last financial year, and there had been year-on-

year growth of $1 million per year.

He said following the meeting that he did not mind Wilson’s comments, as such criticism helped ensure ratepayers were getting value for money.

“Mid Canterbury will make at least $1 million out of China this year, for cost versus return it’s a nobrainer,” he said.

Rural roads come under fire

Rural roads around the Ashburton District come in for a fair share of criticism for the way in which they’re maintained, but not all of that criticism is justified says council service delivery manager Neil McCann.

Currently in the firing lines are sections of a number of roads around Methven and towards Rakaia with a number of complaints made about pot-holes and long grass at intersections obscuring views.

Regardless of the reason, every complaint about roading is taken seriously, McCann said and

over the past few days a number of rural roads have been driven by staff to assess their state.

Rather than fill individual pot-holes as they occurred the council had changed its pot-hole treatment process.

“We used to send people out immediately to patch these up but when we did that they’d blow out in a very short time; we now put up signs and then send crews in to do a full dig-out,” he said.

The change in methodology was a much more economic and longer term fix, McCann said.

Roading manager Brian Fauth said complaints about long grass had been checked and while at

some intersections it was a little high it was quite normal for this time of year as farmers were letting their roadside grow ahead of cutting the grass for baleage.

“In my opinion, however, it is not excessively high to cause sight problems unless the motorist is in a very low seat car,” he said.

Some corrugation was noted at a few intersections where sealed roads met unsealed roads. Vehicles cutting a corner had created a low spot on one road and that had now been filled with gravel, he said.

A number of complaints had recently been received about the

Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road and this was checked, Fauth said.

“There are three short sections that are showing signs of failure and will require dig-out repair work in the future. Timing will be dependent on priority attached compared with other similar work required throughout the district.”

The council’s maintenance contractor has been asked to place signs at failed sites that were dangerous for the travelling public and programme dig-out repairs based on road hierarchy, traffic volume and extent of failure, he said.

Carollers singing in the Christmas spirit

A group of singers brightened the evening of a number of house-bound Ashburtonians this week when they called with gifts of biscuits and entertained with a selection of Christmas carols.

The carol singing is an annual event for parishioners from St Stephen’s Church and this year they were joined by a number of members of the Salvation Army.

Vicar Joan Clark said the event was often quite an emotional experience for the singers, particularly for people who were going through a difficult time in their lives.

“In the group I was in we had two or three people who were reduced to tears, they’d had some sad things happen during the year and people were missing from their lives this Christmas,” she said.

Cathedral rebuild?

Bill English’s new Cabinet sat for the first time yesterday and it was expected to finally give the green light to a rebuild of the earthquake ravaged Christchurch Cathedral.

The decision is expected to be made public before the end of the week, according to Newstalk ZB’s political editor Barry Soper. The battle has raged in the garden city over whether the cathedral should be rebuilt since the devastating earthquake there almost six years ago, killing 185 people.

It is understood Cabinet will approve the rebuild of what was the city’s centrepiece structure, part of which is now covered in vegetation.

Peas, potatoes from paddock to plate

When Ray Tunnicliffe and John French get up each morning, they head to the back paddock, grab an old box, sit down and start picking peas.

It’s a familiar routine and their efforts will see fresh peas starring on Christmas tables around the Ashburton District, this year as they have for as long as the two men can remember.

The pair are members of the Plains Railway team who turn Christmas dinner into a fundraiser for their organisation, picking peas and potatoes early each morning and selling them in the days leading up to Christmas.

There’s around half an acre of peas and an acre and a half of potatoes to be picked or dug before Christmas and the plains boys are making good progress on clearing the paddock.

For the keen, there’s an opportunity to pick your own peas as well. And you

save money – $5 for a 10 litre bucket instead of $15 if they’re picked and ready to go.

“But we’re still working for minimum wage,” French said.

Most morning there are up to 60 pickers in the pea patch and there are no rules around how many you eat and how many you pick.

“We don’t weigh you in or out,” Tunnicliffe said.

This year’s potato crop is a bumper one that’s meeting a steady demand, said Plains chairman Darryl Nelson.

“This is a good dollar earner for us and we’ll keep selling after Christmas if there are any left in the paddock.”

Potatoes are selling at $10 a 5kg bag.

Pickers are mainly Plains members but they were joined for a day by Tinwald Z staff who were keen to volunteer.

Peas and potatoes are available from the Plains or from Z Service Stations.

Accused ‘has had time to reflect’ on remand A young man who has spent five months in prison awaiting sentence has had time to reflect, his lawyer told the Ashburton District Court on Monday.

Hayden Esmond Reginald Howard Keil, 23, of Ashburton appeared before Judge Joanna Maze on charges of assaulting a woman, threatening behaviour, four charges of breaching protection orders, reckless driving, wilful damage and trespassing.

The offending involved three victims.

said Keil accepted responsibility for his actions and was very remorseful.

Judge Maze accepted Keil had already served his custodial sentence while on remand, however he will spend the next nine months under intensive supervision to ensure he continues to get support.

He was also disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to make reparations of $1000.

Tyler Daniel Croll-Davis, 22,

of Ashburton, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment on charges of assaulting a woman, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police signals, and driving while disqualified in its aggravated form.

He has already spent three months in prison pending Monday’s sentencing.

On an October evening where, according to his lawyer Paul Bradford “no party covered themselves in glory”, CrollDavis put his arm across his victim’s neck to pull her off the

property. Judge Maze said this action, in effect, constituted throttling.

He then drove through urban areas at speed before taking to the open road, passing long vehicles at high speed in poor visibility.

He has six previous convictions for driving while disqualified.

Croll-Davis was further disqualified for 15 months, beginning in August next year when his current period of disqualification ends.

Judge gives serial shoplifter her final warning Recidivist shoplifter Sela Mita Cook has been warned a custodial sentence is on the menu should she reoffend.

Cook appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court on Monday where she was sentenced to 12 months’ supervision and ordered to pay $547 in reparation for shoplifting and trespass.

The 32-year-old mother of nine stole an iPad and a cellphone from an Ashburton business.

On another occasion she visited a business she is trespassed from for shoplifting.

Cook has now racked up 144 convictions, 130 of which relate to dishonesty.

Other matters: Brooke Katie Chalmers, 31, of Netherby, admitted charges of assault with a weapon, wilful damage and trespass.

The court was told an argument over Facebook posts ensued after Chalmers had been drinking with the victim of the assault.

She followed him and threw a metal bar at his back, however he turned around and the bar hit him in the face, lacerating his lip.

The wilful damage and trespass charges resulted from two separate altercations involving the same victim, during which Chalmers damaged a vehicle and a laptop computer.

James Robert McLay, 31, of Ashburton, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment but will be home for Christmas.

McLay was convicted on four charges of trespass and one of possessing a knife in public, however the period he had already spent on custodial remand means he will be released immediately for time served.

A destruction order was made

for the knife. The court was told it was a small pocket knife found in his pocket during a search.

McLay had not presented it or threatened anyone.

Ngawiki Marie Large, 27, of Ashburton admitted two representatively-laid counts of benefit fraud totalling some $65,700.

Judge Maze requested a presentence report to include appendices for electronically monitored sentences ahead of Large’s next court appearance on January 31.

Nicola Everdina Lemberg, 43, of Ashburton, was sentenced to four months of home detention for benefit fraud.

Lemburg failed to disclose she was working while in receipt of a couple’s benefit, obtaining $41,400 over an eight year period.

Arona Donald, 30, of Netherby, admitted a charge of assaulting a woman and was remanded on bail to enable a restorative justice conference to take place before sentencing in the New Year.

Topia Santo Patrick Rini, 53, of Ashburton, received 100 hours of community work and nine months’ supervision for assaulting a woman and trespassing.

Cody Wiki, 29, of Ashburton, was convicted and sentenced to 90 hours of community work and nine months’ supervision for assaulting a woman and threatening behaviour.

Matangaro Umaki Mongo Mongo, 22, of Ashburton, was sentenced to five months on community detention and disqualified from driving for 12 months on two counts of driving while disqualified, two

of breaching bail and one of breaching a community work sentence.

Driving matters: Ruby-Rose Burrows, 21, of Allenton, drove into the rear end of another vehicle in a takeaway food outlet’s drive through.

Attending police officers noticed she had been drinking and an evidential breath test revealed a breath alcohol level of 1133 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 1133mcg/l).

She was disqualified from driving for six months and sentenced to nine months’ supervision.

It was Burrows’ second conviction for drink driving this year and she was ordered to obtain and use a zero-alcohol licence for three years when the disqualification period ends.

Kinsey Nirvana Pomana, 21, of Methven, admitted drink driving (EBA 519mcg/l) and driving while disqualified.

He was disqualified from driving for six months, ordered to undertake six months’ supervision, fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

As it was his second convition for drink driving this year, Pomana must obtain and use a zero alcohol licence for three years when his disqualification ends.

Lewislee Tiaka Teinangaro, 27, of Allenton, was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months, fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs of $130 on a charge of driving while disqualified.

Callum Konrad Stocker, 18, of Ashburton, was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months and fined $200 for riding a moped while his licence was suspended.

Marc Christian Teves, 20, of Pendarves, admitted a charge of driving while suspended.

He was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months and fined $400.

Wayne Vincent Ross, 23, of Netherby, was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months and fined $200 for driving while disqualified from doing so.

Renee Kara O’Brien, 29, of Hornby, was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay $500 in reparation for carelessly using a motor vehicle and failing to stop to ascertain injury.

O’Brien gave way to a cyclist on an intersection but failed to observe a second cyclist travelling behind the first.

After colliding with the cyclist O’Brien panicked and drove off.

The following day she handed herself in at the Ashburton Police Station.

Owen Keith Guthrie, 29, of Valetta, admitted a charge of drink driving (EBA 659mcg/l).

He was disqualified from driving for six months and sentenced to 100 hours of community work.

It was Guthrie’s fourth conviction for drink driving.

Tony Green, 22, of Hororata was sentenced to 75 hours of community work for driving while disqualified.

Mathew James Sandor Cague, 31, of Ashburton, was convicted and disqualified from driving for six months for driving while his licence was suspended.

Warrants were issued for the arrest of Jesse Hemi, Adrian Tumai and Natasha Christine Ranson.

Brothel owner may lose cash, five houses A Christchurch brothel owner has lost a bid to block police from seizing $2m in assets, including five homes and $70,000 cash.

Fan Jiang was fined $10,000 this year after her England St brothel in Phillipstown was found in breach of council bylaws.

In April, police applied for a restraining order under the under Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009 to seize five residential Christchurch properties with a rateable value of $1.91m and $71,610.40 cash found at the England St property when police raided it two years earlier.

The police bid, supported by affidavits of a detective involved in the case and a financial analyst, were made on the basis that police believed the properties were “tainted” and that 49-year-old Jiang had “unlawfully benefited from significant criminal activity”.

Restraining orders are temporary measures designed to “preserve property while the Crown is gathering evidence to support an application for forfeiture”. Yesterday’s ruling allows police to seize Jiang’s assets but a later hearing may return them to her.

Jiang is also being investigated for alleged tax evasion.

Jiang challenged the restraining order, claiming that there was “no reasonably arguable cause of action, or case appropriate to the nature of the pleading”, and that it was an abuse of court process.

Police argued that the cash had come from Jiang’s unlawful operation of a brothel and that she had “unlawfully benefited directly or indirectly” by nearly $800,000 and that the money taints the property sought to be restrained, either directly or indirectly.

The police said the assets and cash could not be accounted for from identified legitimate sources of income.

After a hearing at the High Court in Christchurch, Justice Cameron Mander yesterday dismissed Jiang’s application to strike out the police application for restraining orders.

“I am satisfied that a foundation has been established upon which there are reasonable grounds to believe that Ms Jiang has engaged in significant criminal activity,” Justice Mander concluded.

“I am not satisfied that the commissioner’s application for restraining orders is clearly untenable.”

The matter will now go to a full hearing.

Recycler reinventing itself ... again

ou have to have some sympathy for Ashburton’s recycler, Wastebusters.

The organisation has been part of our community for years and in many ways has been a leader in the recycling field. Long before recycling became the accepted way of getting rid of the things we no longer wanted, Wastebusters was out there pushing the message.

As a district we’ve learned a lot and become a much better place because of their persistence.

They’ve been leaders in providing education in schools and in a reverse process, the children who have learned from the Wastebusters team have become recycling educators of their parents.

It’s an organisation that’s been run on a shoestring. Any money made has been poured back into its work.

From small beginnings the organisation became a big player, not only in recycling but in running the district’s kerbside rubbish collection. It held the council’s solid waste contract for a number of years, but lost the contract in 2010.

That was a crisis point in the organisation’s life, but it reshaped, reformed and came back stronger, establishing a base that offered public recycling over a range of areas as well as a wellpatronised re-use store.

Wastebusters has been fighting to get a foot back in the door when it came to the council’s latest tender round for its solid waste contract. It made a pitch for it to split the new contract into a collections and recycling service. It wanted to make a bid for the stuff it was good at, recycling.

This wasn’t to be, but while the tender was advertised as a single unit, the council suggested Wastebusters could talk to the big corporates about becoming a part of their contract.

The upshot was four tenders submitted, none of which were Wastebusters.

And that has left it out in the cold with two choices – continuing to compete with the big guy over its back fence or carve out a new niche for itself. It’s chosen the latter.

It won’t be the recycler we’ve known of old, but it will become a specialist in turning green waste into compost. And, thank goodness, the re-use shop stays.

No embryonic Kiwi Trump waiting in wings S

o it seems there was no embryonic Kiwi Trump hiding in the political woodwork, after all.

Thus, the change at the top has been almost “rippleless”, “the safe pair of hands” – English – winning out over the potential boat-rockers, Coleman and, especially, Collins, who has been summarily demoted to the nether regions of National hierarchy for having had the temerity to suggest she was the person to take over the reins from “tired of it all”, John Key. It’s, therefore, very much “business as usual”; “where Key went, there goeth I”, intones Bill, as he sallies forth from his new, ninth floor office in the Beehive to show the flag and himself to Aotearoa’s latest earthquake victims, in Kaikoura, and almost immediately finds himself in a spat with a local, dissatisfied with the Government’s reaction to the event.

No doubt, it was the proverbial “steep learning curve” for our new leader who, as eight years as finance minister, was not required to deal with anything but entirely tame numbers on his spread sheet while acquiring another billion or two for our relentlessly climbing economy.

So meeting real people in the street and on farm is almost a novel experience for Bill having been hunched all day over his computer and isolated from real, many struggling, many homeless, many simply at their wits’ end, Kiwis, who look for encouragement and hope from the PM and so often found it in the lately departed, John Key. Over on the “other side” – by that I mean, of course,

tunnel, even, possibly, before it.

It might just be worth going for the jugular rather than merely concentrating on damage control so Labour might have a chance of forming the government in 2020.

In that regard, the synthetic burst of indignation, led mostly by the “retiring” Labour stalwart, Ms Annette King, over National’s “failure” to put up a candidate in the Mount Albert by-election, now scheduled for February 25, 2017, shows that Labour will be “making a fuss” at every opportunity, in the hope of finding a few faults in National’s, for so long, unshakable approval rating.

National’s response to this “wind up” is, predictably, to ask what would be the point of running a candidate in a by-election and in an electorate that has been held by Labour for the past 70 years when a general election is scheduled for about five months later.

The cost to the taxpayer would be, quite rightly, seen to be a waste of money. However, the arguments regarding the “use” every party tries to make of controversial constituencies over which they may have influence will, as ever under the vagaries of MMP, be a significant factor in election ‘17.

Messrs Dunne and Seymour, among others slightly less well known, will be “strategising” even before the strains of Auld Lang Syne have died away and the New Year dawned.

Despite all the above, I wish all politically-leaning (as well, of course, as those who are not) readers of the Guardian the happiest of Christmases and an increasingly prosperous 2017.

Truck rams into market A truck rammed into a crowded Christmas market in central Berlin yesterday, killing 12 people and injuring nearly 50 as it smashed through tables and wooden stands.

Police said a suspect believed to be the driver was arrested nearby and a passenger died as paramedics were treating him.

The popular Christmas market outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was filled with a mix of tourists and locals when the large Scania truck hurtled into it.

Germany’s top security official said initial evidence pointed to an intentional act, and the White House condemned “what appears to have been a terrorist attack”.

Police said 48 people were in hospitals, some of them with serious injuries.

Mike Fox, visiting from Birmingham, England, said the truck missed him by about three metres. Fox said he helped people who appeared to have broken limbs, and that

Jeremy Clarkson has shocked Christmas shoppers by driving a tank through a wall and into the middle of a busy Dubai mall.

Footage shows Clarkson’s tank smashing through a wall before being driven into the middle of the mall, and coming to a stop. It narrowly misses one shopper seen walking by while using a cellphone, while others ran for cover. The stunt was filmed as part of Clarkson’s new car show The Grand Tour. Syria’s ‘Anne Frank’ escapes Aleppo carnage She has been described as “our era’s Anne Frank,” updating the world on the horrors of war in Syria’s Aleppo in real-time.

But the story of Bana alAbed, whose Twitter account now has more than 320,000 followers, took a much more fortunate turn yesterday.

Several photos showed the 7-year-old girl among a crowd of residents evacuated from Aleppo.

According to Ahmad Tarakji, the President of the Syrian American Medical Society, NGO workers are providing assistance to her and others.

Gunman kills ambassador A Turkish policeman fatally shot Russia’s ambassador to Turkey yesterday in front of a shocked gathering at a photo exhibit and then, pacing near the body of his victim, appeared to condemn Russia’s military role in Syria, shouting: “Don’t forget Aleppo!

Don’t forget Syria!”

The leaders of Turkey and Russia said the attack in Ankara was an attempt to disrupt efforts to repair ties between their countries, which have backed opposing sides in the Syrian civil war.

An Associated Press photographer and others at the art gallery watched in horror as the gunman, who was wearing a dark suit and tie, fired at least eight shots, at one point walking around Ambassador Andrei Karlov as he lay motionless and shooting him again at close range.

The assailant, who was identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas, a 22-year-old member of Ankara’s riot police squad, was later killed in a shootout with police.

Three other people were wounded in the attack, authorities said.

The assassination came after days of protests by Turks angry over Russia’s support for President Bashar Assad in the Syrian conflict and Russia’s role in the bombardment and destruction

The gunman shouted about Aleppo in Turkish, and also yelled “Allahu akbar,” the Arabic phrase for “God is great,” continuing in Arabic: “We are the descendants of those who supported the Prophet Muhammad, for jihad.”

The attack, condemned by the White House and the United Nations, was another sign of how Turkey, a NATO member and a partner in the US-led campaign

against the Islamic State group, is struggling to contain multiple security threats.

Turkey has become accustomed to deadly attacks – Kurdish militants claimed responsibility for the December 10 bombings in Istanbul that killed 44 people, many of them police.

Crash site could be north of search area A team of international investigators hunting for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 said yesterday it has concluded the plane is unlikely to be found in a stretch of the Indian Ocean search crews have been combing for two years, and may instead have crashed in an area farther to the north.

The latest analysis of the plane’s whereabouts comes in a report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is leading the search for the aircraft.

The report is the result of a November meeting of international and Australian experts who reexamined all the data used to narrow down the search area for

the plane, which vanished during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board.

In the years since the plane disappeared, experts have analysed a series of exchanges between the aircraft and a satellite to estimate a probable crash site along what’s known as the seventh arc – a vast arc of ocean that runs through the southern hemisphere. Smog chokes cities Thick, grey smog fell over Beijing yesterday, choking China’s capital in a haze that spurred authorities to cancel flights and close some highways in emergency measures to cut down on air pollution.

Bowden declares himself bankrupt “Starboy” Matt Bowden – one of the pioneers of New Zealand’s legal highs industry – tipped himself into bankruptcy yesterday, according to insolvency records.

The 45-year-old, when filing for bankruptcy, supplied the Insolvency and Trustee Service with an address in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Bowden put his company, Stargate Operations, into voluntary liquidation last year when he couldn’t afford to pay his bills and was locked out of his lab where he made legal highs.

Creditors claimed more than $3.6 million from the failed firm. Inland Revenue wanted more than $1 million and 22 unsecured creditors said they were owed $2.2 million.

Employees claimed $457,000 in wages, redundancy, bonuses and holiday pay. Of this, about $137,000 was paid.

Stargate’s liquidators, however, managed to recovered about $310,000 after selling the company’s assets and recover-

ing loans and other debts.

During their investigation, liquidators Rodgers Reidy seized laboratory equipment, music studio equipment and the business’s “costume and prop hire branch”, according to the liquidator reports.

Liquidator Derek Ah Sam said the bankruptcy meant there would likely be no further recovery.

The liquidators would now lodge a claim with the Official Assignee but Ah Sam wasn’t hopeful of getting any more money back “unless they find a pot of gold somewhere”.

Bowden, who made rock music under the stage name Starboy, is credited with introducing party pills to New Zealand and later moved into importing and manufacturing synthetic cannabis.

Following Stargate’s liquidation, his Auckland properties were sold off, including a sprawling clifftop home in Auckland suburb of Torbay.

Bowden could not be reached for comment.

Warehouse shares drop Warehouse Group shares dropped 8 per cent to $2.87 after New Zealand’s largest publicly listed retailer said profit may fall between 10-and-15 per cent in the first half of its financial year on a weaker-than-expected run up to Christmas. “We were a little surprised at the magnitude (of the downgrade). Obviously they have their challenges,” said Paul Harrison, portfolio manager at Salt Funds Management. “They are facing all sorts of competitive threats from new entrants and also online.”

AFT to benefit New Zealand’s AFT Pharmaceuticals expects to benefit from news that all medicines containing codeine will be prescription-only in Australia from February 1, 2018.

Australia’s medicine’s watchdog, the Therapeutic Goods Administration or TGA, yesterday confirmed products containing codeine will not be able to be sold over the counter in pharmacies. Aucklandbased AFT managing director Hartley Atkinson said his company will “undoubtedly” experience a sales increase across the Tasman as a result of the decision. - NZME

Dazzling new apple New Zealand apple growers have launched Dazzle – a new variety which they see as being the biggest development since the launch of Royal Gala some decades ago. Fruitcraft, a collaboration between three of New Zealand’s largest growers has been granted the master licensing rights for production and marketing of the variety worldwide, it said.

The variety has been licensed by Prevar - a joint venture between Pipfruit New Zealand, Apple and Pear Australia, and Plant and Food Research, a Crown research institute.

Sealegs goes to court Sealegs International says it has obtained a High Court injunction to protect its intellectual property from being copied ahead of a trial set for September next year. Auckland-based Sealegs, which manufactures and sells amphibious boats and systems in New Zealand and overseas, sought the injunction against Orion Marine and Smuggler Marine and some former Sealegs employees last September for the alleged copying and infringement of its amphibious design.

Women on board Mainfreight, the transport and logistics group, said two women, Kate Parsons and Sue Tindal, will join the company as non-executive directors starting on January 1. The company came under pressure to renew its board at its annual meeting last July. At the time Radio NZ reported there was a tense exchange between Mainfreight chairman Bruce Plested and a representative of the New Zealand Super Fund. Plested reportedly said there was no succession plan but the company was committed to refreshing the board with new members at some point. Both will stand for election at Mainfreight’s annual shareholders’ meeting on July 27.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. ■ Spray a 23cm square baking pan with cooking spray. Arrange bread slices in the base of the pan, overlapping slightly.

Salads packed with flavour

G

one are the days when salads fell into about three brackets – lettuce, coleslaw or potato. Those days are long gone and what constitutes a salad is as wide as the imagination.

Salads can be hot, cold, vegetable only or they can contain meat. They can be a meal in themselves or part of a smorgasbord of dishes. The only thing they must have is flavour and freshness.

■ Add the salad greens, coriander, spring onions, cucumber and pepper.

■ Add the dressing.

■ Heat grill pan to medium/high heat. Add the oil.

■ Cook the prawns for 1 or 2 minutes on each side, until slightly charred.

■ Serve with the hokkien noodle salad, with salsa on the side.

Bean and corn salad

400g pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and cut in small wedges 2T water 2T oil 80g salami, cut into thin strips 1 red capsicum, deseeded, chopped 2T red wine vinegar 1T maple syrup 2t wholegrain mustard 1 avocado, sliced 100g baby spinach leaves 1T pine nuts, toasted (optional) Salt and pepper 120g feta, crumbled

2T cumin seeds, toasted 6 spring onions, trim excess green tops 400g can corn kernels, drained 400g can three bean in brine mix, drained 1C cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 telegraph cucumber, skin on, cubed 1 red chilli, chopped Juice from 2 limes and 1 lemon 2T olive oil 1/2 C loosely packed coriander, leaves and stalks chopped or torn 1/2 t salt Extra lime and coriander to garnish ■ Toast the cumin seeds in a dry pan until they are fragrant. Set aside.

■ Halve the spring onions lengthwise, lightly oil the pan and chargrill until softened. Set aside.

■ Add corn to the pan then cook on high heat until charred and slightly “dried out” and chewy in texture.

■ At least 15 minutes before serving, mix everything together in a large bowl, using your hands to toss really well.

■ Taste after 15 minutes (which gives the flavours time to settle in).

■ Add extra salt, chilli and/or

lime until all the flavours are really humming.

■ Serve the salad with extra cut limes and coriander.

Pasta and surimi salad 1C cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 C kalamata olives 1 handful rocket leaves Zest and juice of 1 large lemon Salt Black pepper, freshly ground to taste 3 spring onions, thinly sliced 1/2 C roasted almonds, chopped 200g penne pasta 250g surimi salad mix, sliced ■ Boil the pasta until al dente in plenty of well-salted boiling water.

■ Drain and toss with 4T olive oil and cooled.

■ Put everything into a large salad bowl and toss well, seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.

2 red chillies, chopped finely, plus 1 extra chilli, finely chopped for salsa 1T ginger, finely grated Zest and juice of 2 limes, plus juice of 1 lime for salsa 24 prawns, tails removed 1 avocado, diced 2 ripe peaches, diced 2T coriander, roughly chopped, plus 1/2 C for the salad 400g hokkien noodles or similar 1C salad greens 2 spring onions, sliced finely 1/2 cucumber, diced 1/2 red pepper, sliced thinly ■ In a small bowl combine the soy sauce, oil, two chillis, ginger, zest and juice of two limes.

■ Divide the mixture reserving half for the dressing.

■ In a large bowl place the prawns and remaining marinade mixture, stirring well.

■ Leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

■ In another small bowl combine salsa ingredients – avocado, peaches, 1/2 C coriander leaves, juice of 1 lime. Stir gently to combine and set aside.

■ Cook the noodles as per packet instructions.

■ Refresh under cold water.

■ Place pumpkin and water in a microwave-safe bowl.

■ Cover, microwave on high (100%) for 5 minutes or until tender. Stand for 1 minute.

Drain.

■ Heat 1T oil in a frying pan over high heat.

■ Add salami, cook and stir for 3 minutes or until browned.

■ Remove from heat. Add capsicum, stir to combine.

■ To make the dressing: Whisk remaining oil, vinegar, syrup and mustard in a jug. Set aside.

■ Combine avocado, spinach, pumpkin mixture and pine nuts in a large bowl.

■ Season with salt and pepper.

Drizzle with dressing and toss to combine.

■ Serve topped with feta.

Sudden death proves fatal

It was a case of close, but not quite, for a couple of Mid Canterbury’s leading bowlers over the weekend.

A strong contingent of players from around the region lined up at various greens around Canterbury on Saturday morning with high hopes of winning their way through to the knockout stage of the Bowls Canterbury Sub-Centre Singles.

Of the list of local players however, there were only three who

gained the right to return to play on Sunday in the sudden death matches.

On his home green of Methven, Craig Carter was dominant as he worked his way through to a knockout berth with consummate ease against a strong field of players.

Things got even better on Sunday morning when he defeated Ty Gurr from the St Albans Canterbury Club, but he was bundled out of the competition by Liam Eathorne from Riccarton Racecourse.

Eathorne went through to be one of the three finalists who will head to Bowls Canterbury’s final weekend to compete for the title.

Well known bowling figure, Gary Lawson, representing the Sumner club, filled one of the other top three spots after working through a tough draw while Papanui’s Lionel Shaw will be the other finalist.

In the women’s event, Sandra Keith was the only fully-fledged Mid Canterbury player to qualify for the knockout round on Sun-

day although former Allenton player, Cait Bassett also made the cut.

They unfortunately both felt the wrath of an in-form Tayla Bruce who defeated Bassett in the first round of knockout before accounting for Keith, who had beaten Woolston Park’s Alma Lockington in the opening round.

Bruce went through to be one of the two finalists in the women’s where she will come up against current Black Jack, Katelyn Inch.

“Sorry he’s in your country. Feel free to keep him though.”

So said Betsy Andreu, a nemesis of Lance Armstrong’s who said the disgraced cyclist reneged on a commitment to apologise to her in person.

Andreu, wife of former pro cyclist Frankie, said Armstrong reneged on an agreement to apologise to her in person after spending years claiming she was a liar.

Following an investigation and consequent admissions by Armstrong, he was stripped of seven Tour de France titles and was banned for life.

Andreu admitted that he had taken the banned blood-boosting drug EPO to help prepare for the 1999 Tour de France.

Andreu said that he was introduced to performance-enhancing drugs while he was riding for Motorola along with Armstrong and Swart. Swart, who lives in Auckland, was among the first people to break the code of silence around the team’s drug programme and implicate Armstrong.

Armstrong branded Swart a liar who had mental health issues.

Of reports that Armstrong wanted to meet Kiwi cyclist Stephen Swart to apologise, Andreu said: “Ah, the power of the sound-bite.

Say it, it will be printed and usually that’s the end of the story.”

The Andreus claimed under court subpoena that Armstrong, in their presence, told his cancer doctors in Indianna in 1996 that he had used EPO, growth hormone and steroids all banned performance enhancing drugs.

Armstrong admitted doping to win seven Tours but declined to address the question of the hospital room. “I’m not going to take that on,” he said. “I’m laying down on that one.”

“If he’s there for a while, maybe he still will call him? I hope Stephen is onto him if he does. He’s been contrite to the people he thinks he can charm and/or those he wasn’t close to.”

Trotter impresses at trials

Keep an eye out for the name Goodtime Gamble.

The Sam Smolenski-trained trotter was a big winner in the qualifying trot at yesterday’s Mid Canterbury Trainers and Owners Association trials at the Ashbur-

ton Racecourse in the hands of champion driver, Dexter Dunn.

The four-year-old daughter of Great Success and Spot On Gamble was driven patiently at the back of the field and only angled out in the home straight – booming home to win comfortably in a time of 3:16.3, well underneath

the required qualifying mark of 3:20.

Yesterday’s trials were a massive affair with around 150 horses entered for the day and 22 heats were held.

That is on average more horses than are usually received for most of the race meetings held

anywhere around the country.

With the annual Ashburton Boxing Day races next week, the trials will have been seen for many as a final hit-out before the popular meeting.

Field for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting will be released tomorrow.

Elixir making all the right moves Top three-year-old Sacred Elixir is making smooth progress in his build-up toward another Group One title.

“He had his first gallop last Saturday morning and he’s coming up super, I couldn’t be happier with him,” Cambridge trainer Tony Pike said.

“He looks great and we’ll just keep him ticking over until the Karaka 3YO Mile.”

Successful in last season’s Gr.1 J. J. Atkins at Eagle Farm, Sacred Elixir has this term added the Gr.2 Moonee Valley Vase and the Gr.3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude to his winning tally.

He also finished runner-up in the Gr.1 VRC Derby at Flemington before he signed off for the spring.

The son of Pour Moi has the $1 million Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby as the final target of his classic season and he is likely to take in the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas a fortnight before the Ellerslie feature on March 4.

Leith Innes Meanwhile, Sacred Elixir’s well-related stablemate Eight Points will be out to make the most of an opportunity at Tauranga today to add to her winning record.

The daughter of Pins and Eight Carat’s granddaughter Markisa will step out in the Laser Electrical Tauranga 1200.

“She’s in foal to Shocking,” Pike said.

“She’s a handy mare, but she over-raced at Hawke’s Bay and pulled herself into the ground.

“She’s got an awkward draw and if we can ride her a touch quieter and get some cover then she can be very competitive.”

Eight Points, who will be partnered by Leith Innes, has three wins and three placings from her 11 appearances.

Rebels to unleash Koroibete Former NRL star Marika Koroibete will be unleashed in the Brisbane Tens as he pushes for a starting Super Rugby spot at the Melbourne Rebels.

The Rebels have announced Koroibete will be included in their 18-man squad for the two-day pre-season tournament at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in February.

After leaving the Melbourne Storm in October, the 24-year-old was fast-tracked into the Wallaby’s Spring Tour squad and played a non-Test match for Australia against the French Barbarians in Bordeaux.

Melbourne Rebels coach Tony McGahan said Koroibete, who scored 46 tries in a 74-game NRL career with Melbourne and Wests Tigers, had the speed and strength to make a successful move to rugby.

“The Spring Tour allowed Marika to transition to rugby with the opportunity to learn and train aside the best players so we’re prepared to give him this unique opportunity,” he said.

The Melbourne Rebels will finalise their squad in January ahead of the 10-a-side tournament on February 11-12.

The 14-team competition features players from all 10 Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby franchises as well as four invitational sides, including French club Toulon.

The 2017 Super Rugby season kicks off on February 23.

Sydney Thunder expect to look livelier in the field and shed their Dad’s Army tag, when they begin their Big Bash League title defence against crosstown rivals Sydney Sixers tomorrow night.

A significant slab of cricket experience is missing from Thunder, with champion batsmen and esteemed veterans Michael Hussey and Jacques Kallis no longer on their roster.

“They are fantastic players and are going to be ultra hard to replace,” Thunder’s stand-in skipper Ben Rohrer said.

“But we’ve got some young kids, so we’ve got a a bit of youthful exuberance coming in, a bit of an opportunity in the batting lineup, which will

Sport Adams hitting his straps It’s Christmas time in the NBA and Steven Adams is making sure he pulls out all the surprises for his Oklahoma team. A third of the way through the current NBA season, Adams is already ahead on his career averages, but he’s chosen December as the month to explode out of the gate.

So far, the Thunder have played seven games this month. And in six of those games, Adams has scored double digits. He’s now averaging 14.6 points this December, nearly three points ahead of his season average of 11.9 and eight points ahead of his career-average of 6.8.

Thriller ordeal for coach

Mark Reid’s emotions went on a bit of a rollercoaster ride at the Ashburton Domain Oval yesterday.

The coach of Mid Canterbury’s Under 15 side could only watch on in both despair and elation as his side’s match against a strong Christchurch Metro Black side ebbed and flowed throughout the day before eventually falling the way of Mid Canterbury deep into the last hour of play.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Mid Canterbury

were 35-2 against a decent bowling attack before Angus Jemmett and Tom Graham went about taking the sting out of the Metro attack on their way to a crucial 102-run stand for the third wicket.

Graham fell eventually for 54 in an innings of some magnitude, while Jemmett who batted for 159 minutes and 140 balls for his 44, was the glue holding the innings together.

“They both did their jobs to perfection,” Reid said after the match.

“I think if Tom had been able

to stay a little longer we would have put up a really good score but as it was it was good enough at the end of the day.”

Mid Canterbury made it to 175-6 for their 50 overs.

In reply, Metro looked to be cruising at 95-2 and at that point Reid’s emotions were rising and falling.

“They made me sweat a bit and there were a couple of times the blood just about started to boil, but they found ways to get themselves back into the match.

“It was a really good effort.”

After beginning so well, the Metro innings crumbled and they were eventually all bowled out for 158 – 17 runs shy of their target.

After winning one game and losing another to start their week, Mid Canterbury are in a good position to push for a playoff spot on Friday with the country sides leading the way after Canterbury Country beat the other Christchurch Metro side in one of yesterday’s other matches.

Two-year suspension devastating for Stretton Kiwi age-group triathlete Amy Stretton is devastated after being suspended for two years for providing an incorrect time at a world championship event.

A Triathlon New Zealand disciplinary commission found that Stretton’s time was not genuine and that it was likely she acted deliberately, given the absence of any explanation to the contrary.

Stretton, a PE teacher at Onehunga High School, posted a swim time of 55.27 to win the 30-34 age group at the Oklahoma ITU Long Distance World Championships in September, more than eight minutes faster than the leading elite female.

She was disqualified on race day but that was overturned on an appeal.

Union raised concerns with Triathlon New Zealand in late September, requesting verification of Ms Stretton’s ability to swim the recorded time.

Triathlon New Zealand could not justify the time and while not in a position to overturn the result, held a hearing on December 12. Prior to the hearing the ITU reinstated Stretton’s disqualification.

However, Stretton’s Aucklandbased swim coach Jane Logan is adamant the time is correct and says they were not provided the opportunity to argue their case.

“It came as a total shock to us,” Logan said of the penalty.

“We had no idea that there was a commission of inquiry. We weren’t approached at all, she wasn’t approached.
