Council to roll out random drug testing

Random drug testing of staff is about to be rolled out as part of a new drug and alcohol policy at the Ashburton District Council.

With new health and safety regulations applying nationally from April 1, the council decided to get ahead of the game by reviewing its policies and introducing the new regime from December 1, but random testing will not be introduced until all staff have been through awareness training sessions, manager people and capabilities Sarah Mosely said.

“This is now commonplace with local authorities in the North Island at present and most South Island councils are

either looking at this or starting to develop their own policies. We’re just a bit ahead of most of them,” she said.

In developing the policy the council had consulted with staff and unions and had worked through any issues and objections that were raised, Ms Mosely said.

The council’s new policy will allow pre-employment drug and alcohol testing in areas that are considered safety sensitive with “reasonable cause” testing and post-incident testing also included.

Open spaces and areas such as the EA Networks Centre were considered “safety sensitive,” along with people who drove company vehicles, Ms Mosely said.

Many companies such as Ashburton

Contracting, Fulton Hogan and meat processing companies have had testing policies in place for several years, but for local authorities it was a new area, she said. “We’re just coming into line with what’s been happening in other industries. We’re working through our staff awareness training and once they’ve all attended this, that’s when random testing will kick in.”

For some people, the new policy might require them to notify managers if they were using prescription medications but this information would be treated confidentially, she said.

Drug and alcohol work place testing is becoming big business with at least one Christchurch-based agency maintaining a van in Ashburton a full-time basis.

Toyota pulls ad after complaints Toyota New Zealand has stopped screening a TV advertisement in which animals look forward to their deaths at the hands of hunters if it means they can ride on the back of a Hilux.

The company faced backlash on social media following the commercial. Toyota New Zealand managing director and chief executive officer Alistair Davis said the decision to cut the ad reflected feedback from members of the public that it had “unintentionally offended”. “We apologise unreservedly for any offence we have caused,” he said. “We’ve listened and we’ll stop screening the ad.”

Star Wars on target Star Wars: The Force Awakens has hauled in an estimated $US250 million ($NZ371.56 million) at global movie box offices and is on track to finish its opening weekend with record US and Canadian ticket sales. The seventh movie in the celebrated sci-fi franchise is projected to sell close to $US220 million ($NZ327m) worth of tickets in the United States and Canada alone through to today, beating the record $US208.8 million ($NZ310.32m) for Jurassic World in June, Walt Disney said yesterday. The movie has already smashed several film industry records and won praise from critics and moviegoers. It collected $US120.5 million ($NZ179m) on Friday, its first full day in domestic cinemas, the highest single-day ticket sales ever. The new Star Wars film is the first instalment in a decade in the series created by George Lucas in 1977. Disney bought Star Wars producer Lucasfilm for $US4 billion ($NZ5.9b) in 2012 and spent more than $US200 million ($NZ297.24 million) to produce Force Awakens. The movie is now open in all markets except Greece and India, where it opens December 24, and China, which has set a January 9 debut. China is the world’s second-largest film market.

Force Awakens has a shot at becoming the highestgrossing movie of all time, according to some analysts. The current record holder is Avatar, which generated $US2.8 billion ($NZ4.16b) worldwide after its December 2009 release.

Lomu widow breaks silence Nadene Lomu, widow of rugby great Jonah Lomu, has broken her silence, thanking New Zealand - and the world - for their support. Jonah died on November 18, aged 40, the day after returning to Auckland from World Cup-related travel through the UK, followed by a holiday in Dubai. He was accompanied on the trip by Nadene and their sons Dhyreille, 6, and Brayley, 5. It is believed that Jonah - who was on dialysis while awaiting a second life-saving kidney transplant - died from a blood clot on a lung. “Thank you to New Zealand and the world for the support and love you have shown my sons Brayley and Dhyreille on the passing of their Daddy,” Nadene said. “While this is a hard time for us, I am grateful for the support from all of you that have over the last week spared a thought for our family.

On behalf of not just me, but Brayley and Dhyreille, I would like to thank those in the media that have given us space and time as a family to grieve. Yoga class on large scale The first attempt at New Zealand’s largest outdoor yoga class took place in the Auckland Domain yesterday. Around 200 to 300 people gathered on the field by the grandstand, with a variety of brightly coloured yoga mats in a huge display of downward dogs led by Denise Ferguson of the Yoga Sanctuary. Organiser Franko Heke of True North yoga said he conceived the idea as a fundraiser for suicide prevention because of his own personal history. He had found himself “dangling my feet off Grafton bridge” in a suicide attempt, but had subsequently used yoga and meditation to improve his mental health. Funds raised on the day will go to the establishment of an “Emergency Transformation Centre” to help others with mental health issues, he said.

In the meantime, it appears that many people were reaching inner peace yesterday, at an often stressful time of year.

Capacity issues at college

Deal will boost dairy prices, says Fonterra

Ashburton College has been working with the Ministry of Education to resolve a capacity issue at the school.

Schools are now required to develop a Property Masterplan with the Ministry of Education (MoE) to determine their future development needs.

A recent meeting was held by staff, MoE and their approved architects Jasmax about the Masterplan, which was discussed at Tuesday night’s board of trustees meeting.

Principal Grant McMillan said it was agreed by college staff and MoE that there were not enough

classrooms for the students currently enrolled.

“We have been tight for the last 2-3 years but we’ve managed it.”

While they probably needed about two more rooms at the moment they would need quite a few more in the next few years when the high numbers of children that had been causing booming roll growths at primary schools started college, he said.

“The classrooms would need to be built and onsite by January 2018.”

The space issue at the moment was well managed through timetabling but having at least two additional classrooms would mean there would not have to

be so much movement between classrooms.

“We use the space here really efficiently. I think our timetablers and staff have managed it really well.”

The discussions with MoE and Jasmax also concluded that 14 of the school’s classrooms were undersized.

The school was built in the 1960s and many of the rooms were 41-51m² but by the 1970s the minimum size for a classroom was 61m².

Although this did not adversely affect the students or teachers it did constrain what resources could be kept in the classrooms and made it harder for furniture

to be moved for group work, the principal said. Part of the Masterplan process was looking at all those issues and working out how to fix them either by remodelling or rebuilding existing classrooms or building new ones, he said.

The ministry-approved architects would now be working out which option was best and the least costly before coming back to the school with a plan.

“I’d hope that by June next year we’d have a clear direction of which way we are going.”

Consultation about classrooms and capacity has been ongoing for the past five years and lead to the Masterplan process in August last year.

Shedding light on Christmas

It is time for someone else to pick up the mantle and take on the next Ashburton Christmas house, says Michelle Kingsford.

The Ashburton mum and her husband have opened their Wakanui Road home after decorating it inside and out during the festive season for the past 12 years, but next year they are moving to Australia.

Mrs Kingsford said it had been “brilliant” to see the number of people in Ashburton decorating their homes increase, however, she believed her home was the only one which opened its doors in the town.

She hoped more homes would be added to bring festive cheer to Ashburton, and believed a householders’ Christmas lights and decoration competition would be a good initiative.

An organisation such as the Ashburton

District Council or Ashburton Business Association could run it.

Lighted homes provided an attraction to young and old, bringing a sense of the Christmas spirit to many who were struggling at this time of year.

“It’s just bringing back old-fashioned Christmas cheer,” Mrs Kingsford said.

While it was sad to be leaving Ashburton behind, the family would be taking most of their collectible lights with them, and planned to decorate their new home, which would be in Melbourne. They would be selling other lights before leaving.

About 2500 people visited the home in the lead-up to Christmas last year, and since opening for 2015 on Monday, dozens had already been through. Mrs Kingsford expected it to get busy from now on, with easily over 200 visiting on Christmas Eve alone.

The elimination of export subsidies for agricultural exports is a watershed moment for world trade that will help boost dairy prices, Fonterra says.

A World Trade Organisation ministerial conference held in Kenya and attended by New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay has agreed on the WTO Nairobi package, which will eliminate the ability of WTO members to subsidise their agricultural exports.

That is an outcome successive New Zealand Governments have sought for decades, with trade envoys identifying agricultural subsidies, along with tariffs, as one of the biggest obstacles to free trade.

Fonterra chairman John Wilson said the historic breakthrough would be good news for dairy farmers. “For years the use - or even the threat - of export subsidies have resulted in world dairy prices below their true level, reducing returns to dairy farmers,” Mr Wilson said.

“Export subsidies have long been acknowledged as the most damaging form of subsidy and their removal from agricultural trade is a watershed for global trade. The Nairobi outcome takes global trade rules one essential step further towards a level playing field for dairy trade.”

Mr McClay said it had been illegal to subsidise the exports of industrial goods for more than half a century, and it was a major achievement to have that extended to agriculture.

“This outcome directly benefits New Zealand agricultural exporters who have to compete in some markets with subsidised goods.”

Failure to reach an agreement at the conference would have been “nothing short of disastrous” for the international trading system, Mr McClay said.

Gifted programme expands

Allenton School will be able to cater for gifted children in all their classrooms from next year.

The school has been accepted into a Ministry of Education (MoE) Gifted and Talented Contract for 2016 which will see every teacher in the school receiving professional development in gifted and talented education practices.

The school also runs an enrichment programme called TAG once a week for talented and gifted children from Year 1-4 but next year it will be extended

to the senior syndicate for Year 5-6 pupils. Principal Graham Smith said having the MoE contract would mean that pupils’ needs would be met in class every day rather than just in the enrichment programme.

The changes would enable a whole school focus rather than separating gifted children.

If the children solely worked by themselves other students would not get to benefit, he said.

Deputy principal Fiona Maw, who has been running TAG for the last two years, said it was important that children with higher abilities were able to be

extended in their classes each day.

The contract would be beneficial because it would make teachers more confident in identifying gifted and talented children and knowing how to better cater to their learning needs.

It would also help other students in the school because when activities are provided that gifted or talented children excel in, it often leads to other children in the class starting to shine in that area too, she said.

“All other children get benefits.”

Pupils at Allenton School

could also be sent to other classes in their particular areas of strength or accelerated into older age group classes.

At the moment there were 55 students on the gifted and talented register, which is about 5 per cent of the students at the school.

Prior to the TAG groups two years ago there were not as many options for gifted children other than sitting ICAS exams and NIE competitions, Mrs Maw said.

“We are all looking forward to our new learning and the difference it will make for our pupils,” she said.

Fruit in schools An extra 13,000 students will receive free fruit next year, after the Government decided not to remove the programme from some poorer schools. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says the Fruit in Schools programme will be expanded to include an extra 77 schools next year, bringing the total number of schools involved to 557. The cost would shift from $6.6 million to $7.8 million, Dr Coleman said.

“Healthy eating helps fuel the body and the brain, that’s why the Fruit in Schools programme is so beneficial to students,” he said.

Heartfelt message Friends and family of a young soldier killed in a vehicle crash in South Otago have posted tributes after his death. Tommy Corbett, 21, was a Lance Corporal in the New Zealand Defence Force. He died on Friday evening when his car veered off Owaka Valley Rd and struck a grass bank not far from his home. His aunt Jacqui Dreaver posted a heartfelt message on Facebook. “We are feeling pretty devastated at the loss of our much loved nephew Tommy Corbett. We are thankful that we got to spend time with him on Thursday and to see how happy he was at the moment.”

Children’s Christmas parade a success Several hundred parents and children attended the Methven Children’s Christmas parade and party yesterday. The annual event is an opportunity for children to dress up, decorate their bicycles and scooters and have some fun. All children who made an effort were given a treat. The parade started at McKerrow Street, went onto Main Street and Bank Street onto the reserve behind Supervalue. The parade ended in a Christmas party with a lolly scramble by Santa on a fire truck.

Lake Hood Extension Trust gets slap on wrist The Lake Hood Extension Trust members have received a slap on the wrist from the Ashburton District Council for closing roads in their development and seeking permission after the event.

Sections of Huntingdon Avenue have been closed as part of the development of roads in the lake extension area and last week the trust asked the council

to sign off those closures.

As part of the deal they had assigned several pieces of land to the council.

But that was not necessarily what the council wanted, said councillor Stuart Wilson.

“I thought our policy was not to take any more reserve land at the lake. The way they’ve done this, the trust gets some more sections and we get more re-

serve land,” he said.

The road closure was something of a fait accompli councillor Darryl Nelson said.

“I’m disappointed this is being done in retrospect, but I guess we have no choice. We do need to make it quite clear to the extension trust that they need to go through the appropriate processes before they do this,” he said.

The council did not have a policy around accepting reserve land but there had been discussion on the issue and a policy would be included in a new open spaces policy due out in March, environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said.

Councillors agreed that the closure process should continue but before it is signed off it will go out for public consultation.

A group of young German backpackers lost precious possessions when their car was stolen while they were at a beach north of Auckland. Two lost their passports, credit cards, international driver licences and camping equipment while they were enjoying the Goat Island marine reserve. One also lost a bracelet from her grandmother, her graduation jumper that had been signed by her high-school friends, and her camera containing the pictures she has taken in New Zealand. The car cost $3200 and was not insured against theft.

They have reported the theft to the police.

Christmas comes to Methven

The holiday season started early in Methven yesterday with the Methven Arts, Crafts and Farmers’ Market holding a Christmas-themed event.

The Methven Action Committee’s (MAC) second market was held in the Methven courtyard next to The Mall from 11am to 3pm.

MAC chairman Richard Sheppard said they had 52 stalls, a few more than last time, offering a variety of goods including turkeys, inflatable Christmas presents, guinea pigs, carved angels, goldfish and produce.

The inaugural market, which was held in November, did not have much produce so Mr Sheppard made sure they had more stalls this time.

Many stalls also sold Christmas items and the Methven Toy Library stall was Christmas-themed.

About 800 people came from Methven, Ashburton, Rakaia and Geraldine for the event.

The next market will be an Easter theme on March 26, the same day as the Methven Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race.

In brief Lifesaving operation The mother of the 11-year-old boy crushed in a lift last week was unable to attend his memorial service on Saturday after a medical condition was picked up by doctors and she had to undergo a lifesaving operation.

Troy Spiers was visiting his paternal grandfather’s home at Gulf Harbour on Auckland’s Whangaparaoa Peninsula on Wednesday when he was crushed while playing hide-and-seek.

His maternal grandfather Alan Watson said on Facebook that Troy’s mother Melanie Watson “was so traumatised with grief that it exacerbated a life threatening medical condition that she was unaware of”.

Enforcing water restrictions

The crunch is coming for Canterbury consent holders caught breaching the conditions of their water takes last irrigation season.

Environment Canterbury monitored 1039 water takes and found 59, more than five per cent, were not compliant with the conditions of their permit.

“There were some instances where data was not submitted in line with the legal requirements and these are being followed up

to determine how and why this has happened and to what extent enforcement measures are required,” ECAN commissioner David Caygill said.

Irrigators taking water from rivers and are subject to minimum flow conditions.

ECan now measures 4800 water takes and monitors a certain number for compliance with consented volume levels each year.

On the back of last year’s Canterbury-wide drought many farmers have started this season

with record low groundwater levels.

“This has caused – and is continuing to cause – significant anxiety for affected consent holders, particularly those with adaptive management conditions that depend on the aquifers recharging over winter,” Mr Caygill said.

“Drought conditions are expected to continue and users will keep facing restrictions.

It is still very important that

Environment Canterbury fulfils its statutory responsibilities and sustainably manages these water resources.”

Mr Caygill said farmers should be planning now for drought conditions over the coming season and potentially beyond, in the knowledge ECan will be enforcing restrictions on water permits.

ECan could not provide data specific to Mid Canterbury, but said a new system would enable data to be disseminated by district this season.

Workplace abuse A Government-funded employment standards task force has been set up in South Auckland after concerns about workplace abuse. The Labour Inspectorate was allocated $32m to strengthen compliance standards in this year’s Budget, of which $1.4 million was used to set up the new team.

George Mason, general manager of the Labour Inspectorate, said South Auckland was a hotbed of red flags because of its high numbers of young and migrant workers. He said minimum employment breaches ranged from minor offences to outright exploitation, including one case where a retail company was effectively paying its staff as little as $7 an hour.

Club members honoured at award ceremony The Rotary Club of Ashburton honoured two of its own last week for their long service and contribution to both their club and their community.

Between them, Nigel Dean and Eric Weir have logged almost 65 years of Rotary membership, and over those years the pair have spent time in almost every position on the Rotary ladder.

Mr Dean joined the club in February 1981 and has been club director, sergeant, song leader, bulleting editor, secretary and charitable trust secretary.

During his time as president he ran the 1995 Bookarama. He was club president in 1996 and 1997 and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2007.

Last week he was awarded a Paul Harris Sapphire Pin. Mr Dean, a qualified pharmacist, was born in London and educated at Christchurch Boys High.

Eric Weir joined Rotary in 1985 and has also spent time as club secretary, president, song leader, director and programme director. His presidency was in 1989/1990.

He has been a Justice of the Peace for 28 years and a Bench Warrant Appointee since 2008.

He has been president of the Justice of the Peace Association.

Whaling scam A scam that saw the country’s largest Maori training provider pay fraudsters more than $100,000 is hitting local businesses with “near misses” almost every day. A police officer who was called out to a fatal car crash arrived to find out one of his daughters had died in the accident. The officer’s 2-year-old daughter was in critical condition after the crash which killed his 4-year-old daughter on Friday in New South Wales. She was rushed to Brisbane’s Lismore Base Hospital. The girls were reportedly travelling in a car with an 18-year-old woman, who was driving. The woman suffered spinal injuries, while an 8-year-old girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Diver dies A diver has died off the south coast of Wellington yesterday.

The man, in his 40s, was diving with three others at Lyall Bay. Senior Sergeant Grant Mumby said emergency services were called at 4.43pm, and a police boat went out to find the man. An airport vessel and the Westpac rescue helicopter also went to the scene.

The diver was found about 5.23pm but was unresponsive, Mr Mumby said.

The many ways of Christmas giving Sue Newman

I

t’s all too easy in the preChristmas frenzy, to spend up large and in the joy of the moment, forgetting that what’s bought today has to be paid for tomorrow.

As we do our bit to ensure retailers wrap up their year with the expected Christmas spending spree boosting their annual turnover, most of us forget that in doing so, we’re probably setting ourselves up for a pretty tough start to the new year when the bills start coming in.

Christmas has always been about giving, but increasingly it’s become about giving gifts in higher numbers and increasing value.

It’s a time of expectation from all quarters and a time of great pressure to live up to those expectations – others and our own – and that means it can also be a time of disappointment.

In our instant communication age, the message spreads very quickly about the hottest, musthave gift for children and young people.

And that raises expectations and raises the pressure to have what everyone else has.

The power of peer pressure is huge and unfortunately children often measure their own worth in what they have or do not have, against what others have.

Parents and grandparents are caught between the natural desire to give their children a gift they so desperately want and the knowledge that their Christmas budget is not unlimited, but it’s hard to get off the Christmas shopping treadmill.

If you’re brave enough, there are good giving options out there that don’t cost the earth but that have a spin-off that will last long after the wrapping paper is thrown away.

Several charities sell novelty Christmas gifts that are fun to give and receive. You can buy a goat, a hen or a cow and “give” the animal as a gift.

The real giving, however, is that the money you’ve spent will go to a specific project in a specific country, buying the animal you’ve gifted and significantly improving life for a family.

A small gift where value far exceeds outlay.

Christmas doesn’t have to be about buying up large, it truly is the thought that counts.

Wrapping up the year T

he holiday season is a time to get together with family and friends, and enjoy the good things about the great Kiwi summer. It’s also a time to review the year that is drawing to a close, and a time to look to the year ahead.

As we look back over the past year, I am proud of what this Government has achieved.

As my colleague Jo Goodhew noted in her column last week, Parliament has wrapped up for the year after having passed 120 bills into law, including the KiwiSaver HomeStart legislation which is anticipated will help more than 90,000 Kiwi families into their first home.

After a slow start to the year, the economy is performing solidly. The economic outlook for the coming years is also positive.

than the cost of living.

Reduced ACC levies are helping businesses and households, as is the roll out of ultra-fast broadband and significant investment in roads, schools, and hospitals.

We’re continuing to see improved results from our public services in areas that really matter – such as better health care, lower crime, higher educational achievement, and more New Zealanders moving off welfare into work.

Businesses are confident and hiring more staff and more Kiwis are voting with their feet and

either staying in New Zealand or coming home from overseas.

This year we got the Government’s books back into surplus, a target we set after the devastating Canterbury earthquakes and the global financial crisis.

This is a significant milestone and one we can all take great pride in.

Our free doctor visits and free prescriptions for children under 13 came into effect in July.

We also extended paid parental leave this year and in 2016 Kiwi families will get another two weeks added to the parental leave provision.

We’re doing more to help children living in hardship, including increasing benefit rates for families with children by $25 a week – the first real increase in more than 40 years.

Record numbers of tourists are visiting New Zealand and spending more than ever before – around $9.4 billion a year.

Iraqi strike ‘a mistake’ A US aircraft appears to have mistakenly carried out an air strike that killed Iraqi security forces near the city of Fallujah, US Defence Secretary Ash Carter says.

The Iraqi Minister of Defence Khaled al-Obeidi said earlier that nine soldiers died in the strike at the weekend.

The US military is leading an international coalition that is

waging an air offensive on Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, where the militant group control large swaths of territory.

Obeidi told a news conference that the strike occurred when coalition air forces were covering the advance of Iraqi ground troops near Fallujah because the Iraqi army helicopters were not able to fly due to the bad weather conditions.

Carter said he spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi by phone yesterday to express his condolences over the deaths.

He said it appeared a US aircraft had carried out the air strike.

“That’s the information I have now,” he told reporters while on a trip to the Middle East.

“He (Abadi) and I agreed that this was an event that we both regretted and that there would

be an investigation of it, but that these kinds of things happen when you’re fighting side by side.”

The US defence secretary said the air strike seemed to be “a mistake that involved both sides”.

Carter met with Abadi this week during a brief visit to Baghdad to assess the state of the campaign against Islamic State.

Avalanche hits remote Norwegian islands An avalanche has smashed into 10 houses on the remote Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, sending eight people to hospital and leaving several others missing.

The avalanche tumbled down at the weekend from Sukkertoppen mountain, which dominates Longyearbyen, the main settlement on Svalbard.

Dozens of houses at the foot of Sukkertoppen were evacuated, said Tone Hertzberg, a spokeswoman for the governor of Svalbard.

Three children were in serious condition and five adults were slightly injured by the avalanche, hospital spokeswoman Marit Einejord said.

Hertzberg said “it would be logical” to assume the avalanche was connected to a storm that hit the Svalbard archipelago late on Friday.

Local daily Svalbardposten said the storm, with winds up to 95km/h, was the worst in 30 years.

“People have been taken to the hospital and there are still people unaccounted for. Right now we still have no overview of the situation.

“It will take hours, many hours, before we do,” Hertzberg said by telephone.

About 100 people, including emergency workers and volunteers, were helping out following the avalanche.

100 people adrift A ship carrying more than 100 passengers is adrift in rough seas off the coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, officials say, contradicting earlier media reports that the vessel had sunk. “The ship has not sunk,” South Sulawesi police spokesman Frans Barung said by phone yesterday, adding that port authorities lost contact with the vessel after its engine broke down.

‘Gas leak’ sauerkraut A man in south-eastern Germany who called police to report a possible gas leak in his apartment building turned out to have been smelling his neighbour’s cooked sauerkraut. Police, the local volunteer fire brigade and the Bavarian Red Cross arrived at the man’s building, located in the Bavarian town of Waldkraiburg, at the weekend to investigate a suspected gas leak, but their gas meters showed no sign of toxic fumes. An investigation showed that the building was not heated with gas and that the suspicious smell reported by the man was sauerkraut recently cooked by his neighbour.

Major Aust fires At least eight buildings have been destroyed in fires raging across Victoria as soaring temperatures and high winds combine to create extreme conditions. Fire crews are battling four fires of concern as the volatile weather conditions continue across the state. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said winds could reach up to 80km/h with a southwesterly change expected just after lunch.

Search and rescue crews work after an avalanche hit several houses in Longyearbyen, Norway, yesterday.

The fierce storm also ripped off a school’s roof, sending it flying

onto a soccer field. The airport in Longyearbyen was closed on Saturday but was expected to reopen yesterday.

Svalbard, which sits more than 800 kilometres north of the Norwegian mainland, is known for its

stunning views of snow-covered mountains, fjords and glaciers.

Located midway between continental Norway and the North Pole, the archipelago has about 2600 residents.

Sixty-nine Kurdish militants and two Turkish soldiers have been killed in four days of fighting across southeast Turkey, security sources and the military say. The military said Turkish warplanes taking off from their southeastern base in Diyarbakir had also bombarded PKK camps in northern Iraq, destroying shelters and weapon posts. A two-year ceasefire between Turkey and the PKK fell apart in July, shattering peace talks and reviving a conflict that has afflicted the mainly Kurdish southeast for three decades, killing more than 40,000 people.

Pakistan Taliban reject IS leader’s claim Pakistan’s Taliban have rejected Islamic State leader Abu Bakr alBaghdadi’s claim to be the global leader of all Muslims.

The Pakistani Taliban’s statement comes after a similar rejection by the Afghan Taliban following pledges of allegiance from low-level commanders of both Islamist movements to the Middle East-based Islamic State (IS).

Last year, IS, an al Qaeda offshoot, proclaimed its leader as “caliph” - the head of the state.

Late last year, a few breakaway factions of the Pakistani Taliban declared allegiance to Islamic

State and ordered militants across the region to join its campaign to set up a global Islamic caliphate.

Pakistani authorities say IS has no financial ties with any Pakistani group.

But there are concerns about further turmoil in the region as US-led foreign troops withdraw from Afghanistan, with groups like the Haqqani network and IS likely to exploit the security vacuum.

A medical document shows Adolf Hitler had only one testicle, German media have reported, suggesting there is some truth to the popular ditty that says the dictator had “only got one ball”.

There has long been speculation that Hitler was missing one testicle, with rumours circulating that he lost the other one during the Battle of the Somme in World War One. But a medical record from the time when Hitler was put in prison after the failed Munich beer hall putsch in 1923 shows he suffered from “right-side cryptorchidism” a condition where a testicle fails to descend into the scrotum - media reports on Saturday said. The doctor’s notes were thought to have been missing for years but reappeared in 2010.

1/2 C medium white wine or apple juice 1/4 C olive oil 1T each: lemon juice, Worchester sauce 2T each: fresh thyme leaves, oregano, rosemary 6-8 Tegel Mixed Chicken portions, precooked ■ Combine the marinade ingredients and pour over the chicken in a plastic bag.

■ Move the chicken around so it is well immersed in the marinade.

Refrigerate for at least an hour.

Action-packed, delicious Hanoi H

anoi’s old quarter is brimming with life.

A steady stream of motorcycles whizz by as we weave through the dense crowd of shoppers along Hang Dao. Above the narrow street plantpacked balconies poke from water-stained terraces that climb into the humid afternoon sky.

On the footpath an enthusiastic shopkeeper spruiks clothes that cover every surface of his little store.

“T-shirt?” he asks.

“Yes please – how much for the Tin Tin one?”

A hopeless exchange of prices and frowns takes place before we settle on a figure not much lower than the original.

Hang Dao is one of the 36 famous streets in Hanoi’s old quarter.

They are famous not only for their hyperactivity but also for the way each is devoted to a particular trade. There is a street just for shoes, for flowers, for jewellery and even for dried fish.

Rick Goodman found Hanoi loud and full of action but also full of incredible fun on a recent visit. colourful fabrics and every kind of lace, trim, zipper and button imaginable. It feels like a haberdasher’s dream.

And as we turn down Hang Thiec the clang of hammers fills the air as tinsmiths work busily on letterboxes, kettles and other shiny items.

The walking makes us hungry, which is a good thing – Vietnam’s cuisine, particularly the street food, is reason alone to visit.

Earlier for lunch we opted for the popular pho: a fragrant ricenoodle soup with beef or chicken and fresh basil, lime and chillies.

But tonight we try cha ca – a Hanoian dish – at the bustling Cha Ca Thang Long restaurant where it is the only thing on the menu.

Turmeric-covered fish is grilled with dill in a hot pan at our table.

We serve it up ourselves with vermicelli noodles, peanuts and a shrimp sauce.

Like most Vietnamese dishes it is fresh, delicious and enjoyably interactive.

We head back out onto the streets in search of another local specialty known as Bia Hoi, which is basically draught beer served in a plastic cup on the footpath.

The freshly brewed lager is sold for around 20 cents a cup at street-side bars and corner stores (or seemingly by anyone with access to a keg).

Huddled on small plastic chairs we mingle with locals and travellers for a while before the comfort of our hotel beckons.

The sophisticated Apricot Hotel in the heart of Hanoi boasts hundreds of contemporary artworks by Vietnamese master painters – as well as the best views in town.

From the rooftop pool and bar we look out over the nearby Hoan Kiem Lake and take in the

city lights. We step onto the glass skywalk that runs alongside the pool and we can see a pianist playing in the lobby, 10 floors below our feet, before coming to our senses and scurrying back to solid ground.

The next morning we take a stroll across the road – slowly, to let the motorbikes veer around us – to the serene lake we saw the night before.

Around the water’s edge people eat ice creams or just sit and think under the leafy trees. But we learn there is more to Hoan Kiem than meets the eye.

According to local legend, a golden turtle emerged from the lake about six hundred years ago to give Vietnamese Emperor Le Loi a magic sword. With this sword the emperor grew strong and drove away the invading Ming army.

today, while a two-metre specimen is on display at a temple at the lake.

We stick with the aquatic theme and head to the nearby Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, where the wobbly wooden stars splish and splash across the stage.

“Buffalo boy playing the flute”, “Agricultural work” and “Chasing the fox that tries to catch ducks” are highlights of the humorous and masterful show.

From here we walk to the stunning neo-Gothic, French-colonial St Joseph’s Cathedral.

We continue on to the inspiring Temple of Literature, the nation’s first university, dating back to 1076.

It becomes clear Vietnam’s oldest city boasts a wealth of history and culture.

It is charming and museumlike and should remain so, with development restricted in the old quarter.

But unlike a museum, Hanoi is loud, full of action and incredibly fun.

‘Bizarre’ day of cricket

By DaviD Leggat New Zealand are within sight of a series-winning victory against Sri Lanka after a bizarre day on the Seddon Park pitch yesterday.

They will start the fourth day on 142 for five, needing 47 runs for a 2-0 win with five wickets standing.

Champion batsman Kane Williamson is on 78 and wicketkeeper BJ Watling yet to score.

Williamson is 22 shy of his fifth test century this year, and 13th altogether.

In a crazy hour, Sri Lanka threw away a strong position in a madcap second session, in which they lost seven wickets for 48 - put another way Sri Lanka’s 10 second innings wickets fell for just 62 runs in 14 overs.

They fell from 71 for none to 133 all out.

It was irresponsible batting, as if a hooking bug had infected the team.

New Zealand had decided on a short ball policy and instead of playing judiciously, Sri Lanka’s batsmen took the challenge on with disastrous results.

Six batsmen fell hooking or pulling, Udara Jayasundera was victim of a contentious DRS call after being given not out initially to a short lifter, while Dushmantha Chameera was

run out in comical circumstances.

The wickets were shared around, Tim Southee finishing with four for 26, Neil Wagner three for 40 and Doug Bracewell two for 31.

New Zealand were in early trouble in their chase.

Tom Latham, having been clunked a nasty blow on his helmet by the lively Chameera, fell to another hook, caught at fine leg and Martin Guptill couldn’t control a short lifter from the same bowler and at 11 for two, it was game on.

Ross Taylor also hooked his way out, again the impressive Chameera the beneficiary, after adding 67 while captain Brendon McCullum, in his last test innings on the ground, had a rush of blood, charging at Chameera to sky a catch to cover.

Williamson was the rock for New Zealand, driving impressively, even while clearly limping at the end of hard run singles.

Chameera’s four wickets give him nine for the match.

One more and he’ll join Chaminda Vaas as the only Sri Lankan seamer with 10 in a test.

It has been a fine performance from the 23-year-old in his fourth test.

New Zealand are aiming to extend their unbeaten home run to 13 tests.

Jamie Joseph has agreed to coach Japan from next year and Mark Hammett will take charge of the Sunwolves in the next Super rugby series. Rugby sources in Japan say the deals are definite with Hammett’s appointment expected to be ratified today while Joseph’s choice may be officially revealed later in the week. Joseph led the Highlanders to their first Super rugby title last year and is contracted until the end of the 2016 campaign.

Penney punishes Breakers again best defence in a game that resembled a shootout from start to finish.

Unfortunately for the Breakers (10-6), they were often on the wrong end of all that shooting as the Hawks (10-7) led from wire to wire.

Penney, one of the best players to ever represent the Kiwi club, haunted his former team-mates from the moment he made his opening shot, finishing with 27 points on nine-of-16 shooting and backing up the 36 he grabbed when the teams met in October.

But, if the Breakers ever became to preoccupied with Penney, Lisch did just as much damage to show why he, too, once won the competition’s MVP award, with the erstwhile Perth guard hurting the home side with 24 points.

Returning South Sydney star Sam Burgess will mark his NRL comeback by lining up to floor club captain Greg Inglis. The Rabbitohs confirmed Burgess’ new contract was ratified by the governing body late on Saturday night, paving the way for his anticipated return to the 13-man code. However his first outing won’t be in the famed cardinal and myrtle. The 2014 Clive Churchill medallist will instead be in a World All Stars strip when they take on the Indigenous All Stars in February.

What can the Breakers do about a problem like Kirk Penney?

Well, after being torched by their former favourite son for the second time this season 10783, there appears to be a couple courses of action available.

First, the defending champs can be thankful they have to play Penney and the Hawks only twice more this campaign (unless, heaven forbid, they meet in the playoffs).

And second, they have to be careful to avoid getting too caught up in Penney and forgetting to focus on Kevin Lisch.

Penney and Lisch combined to lead the Illawarra Hawks to a huge victory over the Breakers at Vector Arena yesterday, riding a red-hot start to repeat their rout from round two.

Corey Webster (25) and Tai Wesley (20) packed plenty of their own offensive punch but, aside from their 20 turnovers, that end of the floor was rarely a problem for Dean Vickerman’s side.

Rather, it was the defence that proved woefully deficient against an opposition boasting three of the league’s top five scorers, particularly during an ugly opening five minutes.

That’s when the majority of damage was done, as the Hawks were almost flawless from the floor to jump out to a 26-9 lead.

It began, of course, with Penney, whose first shot found nothing but net from the three-point line, as if there had been any doubt.

And once Lisch had twice repeated that feat, the nature of the threat the Breakers were facing was perfectly illustrated.

The pair combined for 30 points in the first half and that figure could have been uglier for the home side had Penney avoided the two early fouls that saw him play limited minutes.

The shooting guard was efficiency personified when on the floor, making all four of his shots and punishing his former club from the free-throw line.

The Breakers did show some signs of life once Webster warmed up, grabbing 15 points in the half the help pull his side within 12 and hand them a realistic chance of hauling in their opponents as the third quarter began.

But that hope was virtually extinguished as Illawarra started the second half in a similar manner to the first, with Penney and Lisch providing plenty more evidence to suggest they should never be left open.

The North Harbour Bays athlete from Takapuna cleared 4.64m on the third attempt at the Auckland Summer Series 7 meeting to add one centimetre to the previous record held by Swede Angelica Bengtsson. McCartney will turn 20 in December next year, so will not be eligible to set a World Under 20 record after 31 December this year.

Mid Canterbury fourth at U15 tourney

Mid Canterbury’s under-15s placed fourth at the regional age-group cricket tournament in Christchurch last week.

The action began with two twenty 20 fixtures on Monday, where Mid Canterbury fell to a six wicket loss to Canterbury Country in their first outing.

Mid Canterbury were seven wickets down for 94 at the end of their 20 overs and were chased by Country in the 14th

over with six wickets intact.

In their second twenty 20 clash on Monday afternoon, Mid Canterbury lost out to Metro Black.

Metro were 201 for one at the end of their 20 overs and Mid Canterbury could only muster 105 for six during their time at the crease.

On Tuesday, Mid Canterbury and Metro Red could not be separated in a 50-over tie.

Red were well placed at 193 for seven at the end of their overs and Mid Canterbury were

all out for 193 in the 49th over.

Buller were up next on Wednesday and Mid Canterbury upped the intensity for a 93-run win.

Mid Canterbury batted first and were all out for 179 in the 39th over before Buller were dismissed in the 25th over for a paltry 86.

Against South Canterbury in a 30 over tie, Mark Reid’s side posted 236 for two as Tom Schmack top-scored with 100 and Logan Currie recorded a rapid 55 off 34 balls.

In reply, South Canterbury notched 164 for nine at the end of the allotted overs, falling 72 runs short of their target.

A third and four place playoff fixture followed against Metro Red, who put the tied match earlier in the week behind them to see of Mid Canterbury comfortably.

Metro put up 306 for 8 off 50 overs and Mid Canterbury were all out for 149, despite a good effort with the bat from Archie Redfern (70).

Sussex signs Taylor New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor will play the first half of next year’s English county season for Sussex. Taylor will play all three formats of the game from early April until July. ‘’I am delighted to be joining Sussex,” Taylor said on the club’s website. ‘’I’ve heard nothing but positive words about the setup at Hove and I look forward to contributing across all three forms. Sussex were relegated to division two of the first-class championship last season. Taylor has been signed in the expectation that their current overseas player, Steve Magoffin, will be successful in his application to play as a local player, thus opening up an overseas import spot.

Chelsea bounce back

By Martyn HerMan Chelsea has begun the post-Jose Mourinho era with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge to ease away from the Premier League’s bottom three yesterday, while Leicester City moved five points clear at the top.

Mourinho, sacked on Thursday after Chelsea’s worst start to a season since 1978, had his name chanted throughout by fans while players Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, who some fans have blamed for the club’s slide, were booed.

Some sense of normality was restored in west London with Branislav Ivanovic, Pedro and Oscar all on target as Guus Hiddink, confirmed as interim coach, watched on from the stands.

“Delighted to get the three points today,” captain John Terry told Sky Sports.

“There was pressure on us before the game but we brought that on ourselves.

“We are not used to being (in this position) but the fans will support us through this, and more performances like this will put smiles on their faces.”

Leicester’s remarkable title challenge continued with a 3-2 victory at Everton that ensures they will spend Christmas top of the table, a year after occupying bottom place heading into the hectic holiday schedule.

Two Riyad Mahrez penalties and a goal from Shinji Okazaki put Leicester on 38 points from 17 games, with chasing teams Arsenal and Manchester City, who clash tonight, on 33 and 32 respectively.

Chelsea, who began the day a point above the relegation zone, moved up one place to 15th.

The managerial spotlight is now intensifying on Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal as his side suffered a third consecutive defeat.

Injuries starting to hurt for Wellington Phoenix The Wellington Phoenix’s injury woes have deepened despite a plucky draw with Sydney FC on Saturday night.

Coach Ernie Merrick admitted his side was fortunate to get a share of the competition points from the 1-all draw at Westpac

Stadium in the capital.

“I thought it was a flat performance,” Merrick said. “In the end the game came down to two penalties. We took ours and they missed theirs with a great save from Glen (goalkeeper Moss).

“In a way, I thought we were

a bit lucky to get a point out of the game - but I’ll take whatever points come our way.”

Merrick also confirmed right back Louis Fenton, who left the field injured, wasn’t looking good in a further blow after another defender Tom Doyle collected his

fifth yellow card for the season to incur an automatic one-match suspension.

“It looks like he’s (Fenton) torn a ligament in his ankle. So it looks like we’ve lost two fullbacks.”

New Valencia coach Gary Neville remains without a La Liga win after his side twice had to recover from a goal down to rescue a fortunate 2-2 draw at home to Getafe in an entertaining game yesterday.

Vitesse set for Ellerslie Progressive three-year-old filly Vitesse will tackle the big guns at Ellerslie at her next start after she broke through for her maiden victory at Te Rapa on the weekend.

The daughter of Westbury Stud based stallion Makfi opened her career account with a strong staying performance to take out a maiden 1600 metre contest on Saturday, a performance that has trainer Shaune Ritchie convinced she will only get better as she steps up in distance for her next assignment.

“I’ve been taken by the attitude of this filly right from the moment she entered the stable,” he explained.

“We got her as a two-year-old and hadn’t had her that long when she tangled with a fence and cut her leg through to the bone.

“She needed nine months away to get over it and there was some doubt whether she would ever get to the races.

Triathlon a cracker

The 2015 Christmas Cracker triathlon proved a resounding success with more than 100 competitors running, swimming and walking the Olympic distance course at Lake Hood on Saturday.

The day began with a light drizzle but soon brightened up.

Despite a nine-minute handicap, the ladies couldn’t stay ahead with the top three finishers all men.

Sam Petty posted a time of 2:03:13 to take first place on the podium, edging out Zac Barber (2:05:45) in second and Tyrone Hellyer 2:07:22 in third spot, while Sam Letham (2:11:09) was

the quickest of the locals in fourth place.

Petty made up time with a strong effort in the run, recording a time of 36:28, almost two minutes faster than Barber and five minutes quicker than Hellyer.

Olivia Bird (2:21:09) took out first place in the women’s event, followed

by Kiri Atkin (2:22:57) in second and Martina Fellmann (2:23:23) in third.

Team Rick and the Lonely Wanderers were the fastest team with a time of 2:16:12, while Team Kerry Newton and Loose Units were second and third respectively.

than last year, but was pleased with the level of performances.

“It started off raining but then it cleared up, the numbers were a little bit shy, about 40 competitors down on last year, but I think that was just down to the weather earlier on,” he said.

McDonald said the race was carried out in good spirits, as usual, with participants making the most the preChristmas challenge.

“It was good to see some of the young up-and-comers. It was a success, it always is, people are always in a good mood with it being close to Christmas and it’s a good way to have a blowout before Christmas,” he said.

Lake Hood was the scene of Saturday’s big event.
